EDITED BY KEMMIE RYAN / PHOTOGRAPHY BY BOB KUSELTHE NORTH SHORE’S MOST CREATIVE PURSUITS
FROM ART INSPIRED BY THE AEGEAN SEA TO STAYING CURRENT IN A DECADENT WORLD, HERE IS YOUR GUIDE TO ALL THAT IS TRENDING
The work of artist Patricia Markos Dolan is a meditative interpretation of the classic landscape, shaped by the internal and external world, on view this month at the North Shore Art League in Winnetka.
WORDS BY ALICE YORK PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR HAIR, MAKEUP & STYLING BY CONSTANTINE JAMES“Art is an evolution of practice and intuition,” explains Winnetka-based artist Patricia Markos Dolan. “I’m constantly growing through my work.”
Developing her technique organically over the years, for more than a decade
Dolan has honed in on oil paint as her medium of choice, using her palette knife and brush to create and meld color into landscapes that blur the recognizable with something contemplative and almost otherworldly. “Working with oil is like working with clay—I can sculpt on canvas,” she describes.
Inspired by artists like Whistler, Turner, Rothko, Manet, and Monet—you can find her nearly every Wednesday in the galleries of the Art Institute of Chicago studying and painting the masters—Dolan also finds inspiration in addressing the cultural fusion of her background. As a first-generation American from Greece, she has been a part of two cultures her entire life, spending four months out of every year in a little villa along the Aegean coast.
“Greek is my first language—all my paintings are titled in Greek. There is an intimacy to the language for me, a deeper meaning,” she shares. This is true for her current collection entitled Pelagos, meaning infinite sea, drawing on her impressionable years along the Aegean and inspiration from closer to home: the majestic Lake Michigan.
“People don’t see one body of water when they look at the col-
lection,” she shares. Instead, thanks to such diverse points of reference, each work is itself open to interpretation.
Dolan’s relationship to water is not only one filled with personal history and narrative but equally primal and elemental. The resulting atmospheric work is a play between color and texture, a connection to nature and its ever-changing energy. “I strive to convey a serene and sophisticated aesthetic—to show Earth’s beauty without the gravity of the human presence,” she explains.
Pelagos is characterized by a palpable sense of movement, fluidity, and dimension across the typically flat, static surface of canvas, and the subtlety of its color palette, nuanced shades evoking a continuum of emotions. In some paintings, a wash of moody grays
stir melancholic memories, and in others, confident layers of blues and greens convey formidability and power. Many of the works feel almost dreamy, some reflective, and others lean towards turmoil.
“Every piece is unique because it’s a feeling. I surrender to where the painting takes me,” she says. “Once the paint hits the canvas, I see how it all plays together. It’s like a puzzle to be solved.” Due to this intuitive process, no piece can be truly replicated.
As Dolan paints, the feeling evolves, with water, sand, and sky coming together. “The image falls into place as I see the relationship to color,” she explains. “I look at its rhythm, to the past, the present, and future. It becomes a conversation.”
This dialogue forges a connection, not only among artist and canvas or between colors, but among the works themselves: Dolan explains that her paintings are like family—interconnected and related together as one unit. “My first painting was hard to part with, but then I realized the joy of it being out in the world. That it was making a difference.”
Of these new homes for her works, Dolan says, “I’m proud and humbled by my collectors, that they open their space to my work, that they connect with my vision.”
Dolan is similarly grateful for the camaraderie she has found among fellow artists on the North Shore: “I’m honored to be amongst this group of talented artists—the support and inspiration we have for each other is such a gift.” For the past decade, she has been both a member and exhibitor at the North Shore Art League, which will house a solo show of her work opening November 14, and the Evanston Art Center. Her work can also be found at Vivid Art Gallery in Winnetka and is also available by commission. Beyond the Shore, Dolan is affiliated with the
Art Institute, Chicago Alliance of Visual Arts, and the Palm Beach Armory.
Though this connection to community and to client is significant, it’s a link to family, which includes husband Robert and their three children John, Frances, and Michael that is tantamount. “What I hope so much is to inspire my children to create without fear,” Dolan shares. “I wanted them to see in this pursuit that they are free to express in life, to put their vulnerability out there, to be brave, to be their authentic selves.”

After taking a break to raise her two boys, she is now assisting international emerging female fashion designers to help grow their brands by introducing them to the U.S. market. Her rst client is Caprice Decadent, founded by a jewelry designer from Norway whose designs play o art history; Greek culture; and the designer’s appreciation for how glamorous and chic a pair of earrings or necklace can make a woman feel, even on a gloomy Monday morning. And at the end of the day, you’ll often nd me listening to Frank Sinatra. FROM THE DELICIOUS FARE OF AN EVANSTON EATERY TO A GLORIOUS BEACHSIDE RESORT, HERE IS THE INSIDE TAKE ON THE BEST OF LOCAL CUISINE AND FOREIGN TRAVEL
Amy Morton is constantly trying new things. As the daughter of Arnie Morton, founder of Morton’s Steakhouse, she could have just been satisfied to open the best new steak joint on the North Shore and left it at that. The Barn Steakhouse has a sleek, modern sensibility, a beautiful location with deep Evanston roots that’s been reclaimed and repurposed, and the most incredible menu of dry-aged and wet-aged steaks you’ve ever seen. All of that is more than enough. But Morton keeps inventing, adapting, and building.
Take the new early-bird Prix-Fixe Menu. Every Sunday through Friday from 5 to 6 p.m. they offer a three-course meal for what is essentially the price of an entree. Morton also recently tripled the number of steak offerings on the menu, every Heritage Angus cut comes from Meats by Linz, a short hour and a half drive away. Everything about The Barn Steakhouse comes together with a tip of the hat to her legendary red meat lineage while still feeling completely current, irresistibly classy, and totally unique to Amy.
The Barn Steakhouse is located in the alley between Davis, Church, Maple, and Oak Streets at 1016 Church Street in Evanston, 847868-8041, thebarnsteakhouse.com.
Invented in the Oyster Bar in New York’s Grand Central Terminal, this surprisingly delicious delicacy combines the salty tang of wild American bowfin caviar with the creaminess of crème fraîche and chopped hard-boiled egg on thin slices of white bread. It’s the most arresting version of an egg salad sandwich we’ve ever experienced. Even though we’re not typically caviar people, this sandwich is intoxicating and we vowed to get it on every future visit. We had this dish paired with an effervescent cava by their top-notch sommelier to complete the Gatsby vibe.
The best. I’m not kidding. Mouth-wateringly tender Heritage Angus beef doused in an exceptional red wine demi-glace. Marrow butterball potatoes, made by rendering down the bone marrow into the butter, accompany the steak and are so decadent that they could just as easily be dessert. The typical steakhouse toppers of blue cheese, peppercorn, or Béarnaise are available, but to add them would be a great disservice to this perfection of preparation. This is as good as meat and potatoes get.
The perfect warming entree as our North Shore autumn gives way to winter temperatures. Shreds of savory bison mixed in with hand-dipped ricotta cheese, red wine, and spices, all over a tangle of chitarra pasta. This dish leans directly into the flavor-forward nature of the meat, the sauce adding just a touch of sweetness to the pasta for balance. Comforting and savory, this artful heap of pasta satisfies.

Before you read any further, make yourself a boho beach cocktail.
Pour one Corona (or Modelo) over ice, add Clamato, then a shot of Worchestershire, tabasco, spices, and fresh squeezed lime juice. Serve over ice and trim the edge of the glasses with Tajin. Then sip (it’s called a Michelada, by the way). Take a deep breath. OK, now you’re ready...
For those of you who don’t have the fabulous friend with a private villa along one of the most coveted coasts of Mexico, we’re here to share a secret. There is such a hideaway—as unapologetically decadent and ridiculously luxurious as if it were owned by
said (imaginary) A-list celebrity BFF—that’s available for rental in the secluded resort enclave of Punta Mita.
Designed by the dream team of acclaimed architects Juan Collignon and Manolo Mestre working with interior designer Karen Collignon, this sandy, shoes-optional property known as Casa Koko was originally built as a private residence. With nine suites, the oceanfront villa can accommodate up to 22 guests (18 adults and four children) with posh amenities and bespoke touches that make you want to pinch yourself to know it’s all real.
Sure, you’ve stayed in luxury resorts along all the coasts but this is different. This is a family holiday retreat, or a girls’ bachelorette trip, or a corporate retreat for the memory books.
been a better time for the ultimate splurge.View from car entrance
Our visit earlier this year (which came a week after rapper Ludicris visited) included a sojourn in the Luna Suite, a thoughtfully appointed series of rooms (including a walk-in dressing room and a private outdoor shower) that led to a balcony overlooking the beach. An in-room hammock and stone bathtub set it apart from the others, along with a sitting room large enough to entertain fellow guests.
One of the marketing slogans for Casa Koko is that it’s “more than a stay; it’s a lifestyle.” And if one had to define that lifestyle, it would be that of doing almost nothing in the most luxurious way. Wander down to the social areas of the villa, perch on a sofa, and take in the lush tropical flora and views of the Marietas Islands, all while ordering a margarita and a tray of delectable small plates that tempt the palate and make you long for the dinner hour.
The whole concept of having a staff is elevated at Casa Koko throughout the experience. Want a massage? It will be arranged either in-suite or in the spa. Fancy a voyage to a nearby beach club? Someone will bring around a golf cart post haste, just for you.
Once your personal concierge unpacks your bags (hanging everything and organizing it meticulously, making you wonder how you’ve lived without such a service all your life) and you’re comfortably barefoot, it may be hard to venture beyond the Pacific horizon.
With an attentive (and always charming) staff, cocktails at the ready, and several terraced patios leading down to the ocean’s edge—including one with a fire pit—it’s conceivable that you could stay a week and never put on the shoes that are so carefully lined up in your walk-in closet. However, let us advise that it’s worth it to make the effort.
Not only is the resort community of Punta Mita filled with dazzling waterfront restaurants and cocktail bars (we loved dining at both the Kapuri Beach Club and the Pacifico Beach Club) but it’s also home to two Jack Nicklaus signature 18hole golf courses. The Pacífico and Bahía are both available for Casa Koko’s guests, making it a privileged destination for those passionate about golf. And even if that passion is tepid at best, it’s worth checking out the 17th hole of Bahía’s worldclass course (the views alone are worth missing the shot).
Even more impressive is the location. As part of the exclusive Punta Mita resort community, guests have access to the amenities at St. Regis and surrounding properties. And because Casa Koko is now part of The Adventures Group, there is no limit to the type of custom tours that can be arranged to amplify your stay.
Here are three recommended day trips:
Casa Koko is located about 10 miles away from the hippie chic, boho bazaar that is Sayulita. A 20-minute car ride will take you to this happening coastal town, filled with restaurants, bars, art galleries, organic cacao shops, and street markets. Soak in the vibe, which is even more fun when paired with an off-road adventure.
The attentive staff at Casa Koko can arrange boating adventures of any type. Perhaps you want to go paddle boarding or snorkeling to explore what’s below the ocean blue. Our preference was a luxury cruise around the bay, complete with chef-prepared apps and cocktails, of course. (Whale watching and swimming with dolphins are also popular options.)
Breakfast is served buffet style though the term “buffet” doesn’t do it justice. Imagine a feast of fresh fruits, juices, and delicacies of the season. Other meals are arranged through the private chef and his team, and can be customized for every guest (whether it’s a request for Kosher or gluten-free) at the dinner table.
Stay a few days and you may never want to leave...
While Casa Koko is among the most luxurious of private luxury villas, there are plenty of still fab condos for purchase in the Punta Mita resort. And your “staff” would be happy to arrange a visit, if so desired.
Time to finish that Michelada. Adventure awaits.
The important thing to remember if you choose this activity is you have a shower with lush bath products waiting to wash off all the dirt you’ll have on you when you blaze a trail on a Polaris RZR UTV. Talk about an adrenaline rush. Get ready to traverse muddy roads, rivers and trails with views out over the hills.

Tasked with the customization of a Highland Park home, luxury residential design firm Soucie Horner, Ltd., known for its individualized and sophisticated interiors, took on this renovation project from studs to seating, tackling structural overhaul and the curation of the client’s collections with equal finesse.
Co-Founder and Principal Martin Horner describes this recent revamp. WORDS BY ALICE YORK / PHOTOGRAPHY BY DUSTIN HALLECK PHOTOGRAPHY“Defining lifestyle through design—that is our mission, our ethos,” explains Martin Horner, co-founder and principal of Soucie Horner, Ltd., arguably one of Chicago’s most sought-after interior architecture and design firms. “Our approach emphasizes real life: how people live, how they entertain, and how they collect.”
Horner met future business partner Shea Soucie back in 1994 as students at the School of the Art Institute. It was an instant connection and collaboration, forged by studies abroad in Paris and big dreams of the future.
After graduation, Horner and Soucie worked under award-winning architect and designer Suzanne Lovell before venturing out on their own. In 2003, they settled into their current offices, a chic loft space in River North, expanding Soucie Horner Interiors to include a design atelier, Soucie Horner Collections, for custom lighting and furniture, the SHIIR Rug collection, developed in partnership with Oscar Isberian Rugs, now available in show-
rooms across the United States and Europe, and SH Studio, for commercial properties.
While their main client base is located across Chicago and the North Shore, Soucie Horner has built second homes and stand-alone projects alike from New York to Jackson Hole, and have been featured in publications such as Architectural Digest and House Beautiful. “As a designer, it’s exciting when your work is getting noticed outside of your community,” shares Horner.
No matter the type of space, the goal remains the same: a Soucie Horner project is designed to be “comfortable, livable, and absolutely lovely.” The goal is to “illuminate individuality,” ensuring the design process is highly personal and collaborative. “The majority of our clients have a vision,” says Horner. “When we meet, we talk about what inspires them, what foods they like, what colors. Our biggest question is always ‘How do you want this house to feel?’”
It all begins with a lifestyle board, which includes the expected images of rooms and inspiring artwork paired with more surpris-
ing subject matter like food and plant life along with three words that capture the feeling they want their space to evoke. These words and images are referred back to throughout the process as every new layer—design schemes, architectural plans, timelines— is added. “We take our clients on a journey—it’s a linear, organized process but equally an artistic one,” Horner relates.
For a recent client in Highland Park, the journey began after a decade in her current home. A friend of an existing Soucie Horner client, the homeowner became enamored with the aesthetic they had created in her friend’s home, and it was not long before she enlisted the firm to upgrade her existing living space.
Soucie Horner was brought on to elevate and customize what was originally built as a spec home, with an initial focus on the kitchen. Addressing its odd size, difficult angles, and issues with functionality, the design team moved walls and installed two islands for additional prep space, adding a vintage dining table and leather chairs in between for seating. There is also a little space perfect for the busy mother of three to recharge: a coffee nook nestled into the bay window, complete with plush chairs to relax into. “For a family, the kitchen is the core of the house—it needs to function for everyone,” Horner explains, adding, “It’s one of my favorite kitchens we’ve ever designed.”
What started as a small renovation eventually touched every room—and bathroom—of the home. Structural changes resulted in a more appropriate scale for the space, improved proportions, and better bones. Next came custom lighting and fixtures: replacing the original mismatched finishes throughout the home are brass and other metallic elements, particularly notable in the
kitchen. “I love the depth of color and materials we were able to achieve,” shares Horner.
The dining room is a stunning example of color, texture, and feeling, with Horner describing the room as “dramatic, slightly moody, and sexy.” While the center table is so often the focal point of most dining rooms, the true star of this design is its walls, from the lustrous wallpaper that shimmers in the twilight to the bold orange vintage Hermès scarf cleverly framed on the wall.
Described by Horner as stylish and forward-thinking, the client brought with her to the project an eclectic and extensive collection, including textiles, photography, and African pieces. “The question quickly became how do you make these things feel special, feel collected, and not make the space feel like a showroom?” says Horner. “So it was my job to be the curator of the space, to enhance what she already had.” Her collections now flow organically from room to room, lovingly showcasing beloved items inherited over the years and reflecting many memorable experiences and travels.
From fearless art collector to practical parent, the back of the house has been reworked to better serve the real lives of its residents. It now features a mudroom—a must for a busy and active family—and the homeowner’s office, the epicenter of the household, the epitome of efficiency, organization, and clean design, complete with a dedicated homework space for the children adjacent to her own.
Comfortable, livable, and absolutely lovely? A promise deftly fulfilled.

WORDS BY MITCH HURSTImagine your private Eurpoean-style manor home with its own secret garden and fire pit, gorgeous custom millwork and coffered ceilings, elegant living room/ library, six fireplaces, screened in sunroom, and over-the-top master suite. There are such dream homes for sale on the North Shore within reach—and there’s no better time to consider relocating or trading up. It’s a buyer’s market.
Just ask Elizabeth Wieneke, longtime real estate broker and resident of Lake Forest. Wieneke currently has 12 active listings available in Chicago’s north suburbs, including nine in Lake Forest, with prices ranging from $599,000 to $3,999,999.
One recent listing is a sumptuous home and property at 188 E. Foster in Lake Forest. The renovated manor home is 6,600 square feet and sits on 1.4 acres. It is elegant and casual, features a private, meticulously landscaped backyard, and is located in a very convenient location—just a short drive to the Lake Forest Metra station. Potential buyers will be impressed with the like-new condition of the home and its finished lower level that includes a theater, game room, and temperature-controlled wine cellar. More information can be found on Wieneke’s website, listed below.
Wieneke has worked in real estate on the North Shore for 27 years, and each of those years she’s been with Griffin, Grant & Lackie, a boutique firm with offices in Lake Forest and Lake Bluff that got its start in 1903.
“We’re privately owned and the oldest real estate company in Lake Forest,” Wieneke says. “We’ve been in the same family’s hands for over 100 years, and management is hands-on. Our agents live in the community and that helps us guide clients better.”
Wieneke has lived in Lake Forest throughout her career
“Something I really like about Lake Forest is that it’s not congested, and offers easy access to downtown and to O’Hare,” Wieneke says. “Many people don’t realize how much more value you can get for your money as compared to the neighboring communities.”
Wieneke stays focused on providing personal service to clients, who are often busy during the day, so she makes a point of being available during evening hours.
“I was always interested in architecture and I enjoy connecting with different people; that’s what attracted me to real estate,” she says. “While the paycheck is an incentive it’s important how you get there. I know the market and I care, whether it’s a $100,000 condo or a multi-million dollar home, everyone deserves the same attention.”
This perspective is perhaps due to Wieneke’s journey in life. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1981 after Marshall Law was implemented in her native Poland. She has built a successful career and life on the North Shore.
And there’s one lesson Wieneke has learned over the years that serves her well.
“People make a connection almost immediately when they walk into a home,” she says. “You just know when it’s the right place.”
188 E. Foster in Lake Forest is currently listed at $3,600,000. Contact Elizabeth Wieneke, Griffith, Grant & Lackie, 280 E. Deerpath Road in Lake Forest, 847-732-4039, gglrealty.com/elizabeth-wieneke.

When life as a diplomat caused EMILY HIKADE to lose sleep, she found refuge in organic, highquality sleepwear, creating a life where comfort trumps chaos.
WORDS BY ALEXA BURNELL PHOTOGRAPH BY ROBIN SUBAR HAIR, MAKEUP & STYLING BY CONSTANTINE JAMESThere comes a time in the lives of many women where they must reassess if their careers can happily coexist with motherhood. For Winnetka’s Emily Hikade, that moment came while serving as a diplomat and working overseas in the field of counterterrorism.
It was 2014 and she was on a mission when her airplane nearly crashed into the sea. In those terrifying moments, the faces of her children flashed before her eyes, leading her to close one window of her life, while opening the door to a new dream and secure future.
Highly influenced by the sophisticated and minimalist styles she was exposed to while living abroad, Hikade founded Petite Plume—a luxury sleepwear company where snippets of her former perilous life, are woven into products designed to provide comfort.
While counterterrorism and clothing don’t typically go handin-hand, Hikade has discovered parallels—being both a diplomat and a business owner requires a certain amount of grit, perseverance, and resiliency.
Hikade founded Petite Plume while still working as a diplomat and traveling frequently. In addition, the Hikade family was raising four small children in rudimentary conditions in third-world countries across the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. Hikade’s attempts to work late at night once the children were asleep were often thwarted by the need to treat the frightening symptoms of Malaria, Dengue Fever, or remove head worms from her son’s skull (i.e., mango fly larva), all the while with limited access to quality medical care. Further complicating her efforts to advance her company was her need to contend with limited access to the Internet, difficulty securing fabric samples, and conflicting time-zones.
Despite all these challenges, Petite Plume is now an unmitigated success. The company has taken off, surging quickly
to be found in over 500 boutiques, as well as flagship stores such as Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, and a recent partnership with J. Crew. “Less than one percent of companies ever reach one million dollars in revenue. When we hit that number it was a real achievement, but there was no rest for the weary. We’re growing even faster now and I honestly feel we’ve only just begun. Our target is 100 million and we have a plan to get there,” Hikade shares.
When news came in 2018 that her husband would be stationed in Chicago, this Wisconsin native was eager to establish roots closer to home. They settled on the Village of Winnetka and haven’t looked back once.
From a work perspective, the ability to conduct business on U.S. soil has relieved many of the obstacles Hikade had grown used to hurdling. She excitedly reports that Petite Plume’s sophisticated,
luxurious sleepwear made without chemicals has gained international prestige and a strong celebrity following. Prince George was wearing Petite Plume pajamas when he met President Barack Obama in 2015. Celebrities like George and Amal Clooney, Jessica Alba, and Jimmy Fallon have quickly become fans. Local boutiques like Penny’s from Heaven in Lake Forest and Crème de la Crème in Winnetka also carry Petite Plume.
“We are growing so quickly and have so much interest from new and potential partners. My commitment, however, is to stay focused on quality, ensuring any further partnerships are with individuals who share the same vision,” Hikade shares.
As for her personal and family life, the world has become the Hikade family’s oyster. Their four sons are flourishing in their new hometown. “While living overseas we had access to soccer, soccer, and more soccer, so now we are giving the boys a chance to try it all. They’ve played hockey, basketball, baseball, football, tennis ... and of course soccer. Hockey, in particular, has become a favorite. It’s the first time they have access to a sport played on ice,” Hikade says. “Our new lifestyle is more hectic but so eye-opening in a whole new way. The kids can safely walk to school, the library, and friends’ houses. The beauty and safety that exists on the North Shore is something to be embraced; it’s something our family cherishes.”
Along with the opportunities available in their new land, Hikade remarked on the deep commitment to what matters most. “I love that our new community is so focused on family. There seems to be a real emphasis on home life. The commitment to philanthropy has also struck me. From what I see, the North Shore is a very special place; one that has small town values but an open-mindedness to cultures outside of their own,” Hikade notes.
“I feel a sense of peace knowing I can give my children an idyllic upbringing in Winnetka, while also watching them hold dear the languages, experiences, and beliefs they have been exposed to while living among other cultures. In the end, wherever you live, raise a family, or work, we all want the same for our children— peace, safety, and a sense of wonder that only comes with remaining open to the world around us.”

Wilmette’s KIM AND SCOTT HOLSTEIN introduce cold-pressed juice for craft cocktails through their new company Twisted Alchemy.
WORDS BY ALLISON DUNCAN / PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR HAIR, MAKEUP & STYLING BY CONSTANTINE JAMES
For serial entrepreneurs and husband and wife duo Scott and Kim Holstein, margaritas are always the answer. The pair often celebrate their May birthdays with a fiesta, complete with the requisite tacos and craft margaritas. But, since the inception of their fresh, cold-pressed juice brand Twisted Alchemy in 2016, one major component of the party planning has changed.
“We were always on the hunt for fresh lime juice for our birthday celebration, and we ended up having to go to a restaurant that squeezed its juice on-premise,” says Scott. “My first job after college was as a bartender at a Tex-Mex restaurant in Paris, so I knew that process and realized it was a pain for mixologists and bartenders to have to squeeze fruit on-site.”
Now, Twisted Alchemy provides bars, restaurants, and food service (and Scott and Kim, too) a solution never before offered: fresh, cold-pressed juice designed specifically for the service industry to eliminate labor costs, food safety liability, waste, and
variable prices. The couple is also launching a direct-to-consumer line in the next few months, including curated cold-pressed blend margaritas in three flavors: spicy pomegranate, Persian lime, and mezcal blood orange. Interested consumers can already buy their products, like “Be Your Own Bartender” variety sampler, online to create unique craft cocktails at home.
For Scott, that often means a spicy blood orange margarita with a splash of mezcal; for Kim, it’s a watermelon mocktail margarita, adding lime and cayenne pepper for a bit of spice. They’re riding the burgeoning trend in craft mixology and in quality, all-natural, no sugar added ingredients. And while preferences vary, Scott notes that “margaritas are still king in the U.S. right now” and that “watermelon is on fire with blood orange moving up, too.”
Twisted Alchemy offers a variety of flavors, juiced in Milwaukee, including lime, lemon, grapefruit, pineapple, watermelon, orange, key lime, and blood orange, and they’re soon launching passionfruit. In every bottle of Twisted Alchemy’s Persian lime juice, for example, there are 25 limes. And they’re not just for drinks, either. Chefs have long touted the juice, especially lemon and lime, for its strong flavor profiles when cooking.
“We started Twisted Alchemy because of our interest in mix-
“IT CAN BE SCARY TO START SOMETHING FROM NOTHING, BUT THAT’S ONE OF OUR BIGGEST PASSIONS.”Twisted Alchemy cold-pressed juices. Photography by Margaret Pattillo Photography
ology and in margaritas, specifically, to be honest,” jokes Scott. “Our mission is to elevate spirits. We’ve been accused of putting sugar in our juice, but we’d never do that. It’s all 100 percent curated with nothing added. Fruit is a gamble but with us, it’s not. We curate for how sweet the juice is from around the world. We source pineapples from Costa Rica, grapefruits from Peru or Texas, limes from Mexico and later this year, passionfruit out of the Dominican Republic.”
After the juice is bottled, it’s placed into a pressure chamber filled with cool water for about 60-120 seconds, where it’s subjected to elevated pressure (think the equivalent of being submerged 20 miles beneath the ocean floor) starving off oxygen that, in turn, inactivates harmful, pathogenic bacteria without the loss of quality or nutritional value. The result? Fresh-tasting, cold-pressed juice year-round with a 90-day shelf life. They ship anywhere in the continental U.S. within 48 hours from their warehouses in Sacramento and, soon, in Georgia.
Twisted Alchemy is also a business with purpose, and they compost 100 percent of their produce. This year, they anticipate composting over 500,000 pounds of produce waste. In addition, Twisted Alchemy partners with various organizations who seek to make an impact on the world, like 1% for the Planet, an environmentally focused non-profit, and Speed Rack, in support of breast cancer education, prevention, and research.
Prior to Twisted Alchemy, the duo ran Kim and Scott’s Gourmet Pretzels, a company that transformed the plain pretzel into an anytime meal and was sold in retailers like Starbucks and Whole Foods. After they sold the brand in 2012, they later launched the first iteration of Twisted Alchemy, Industry Juice, but felt the name was too focused on functionality. So, in homage to their pretzel-loving roots and to the combination of art and science in the juicing process, Twisted Alchemy was born.
“It can be scary to start something from nothing, but that’s one of our biggest passions,” says Kim. “It’s been so fun playing around with new products that will broaden our reach of cocktail enthusiasts and of those with an interest in culinary arts and mixology.”
Currently, Twisted Alchemy works with notable hospitality groups like Hogsalt and Four Corners, along with restaurants like Cindy’s and Somerset and theaters like the Steppenwolf and the Writers Theatre in Glencoe.
In the past, Scott has performed musical theater with his children—the couple has two daughters and a son, aged 19, 16 and 14—through community productions in Wilmette, where the
family is based. He also enjoys fitness and will be doing a 24-hour tough mudder in Atlanta this fall, and Kim is “crazy about yoga.”
Ultimately, though, it all comes back to margaritas. “I love the time we share as a family,” says Kim. “Mostly traveling, experiencing foods from different places and, of course, eating and drinking.”

PHOTOGRAPHY BY LARRY MILLER Perla & Jason Long Donna Berger, Susan Mack, Maureen Kogen Buggie O’Grady, Nancy SemerdjianAs the fall season turns into winter, our sun exposure diminishes significantly, especially in the Chicagoland area. This also affects how much Vitamin D we obtain from the sun. Vitamin D deficiency is a very common finding on patients’ labs. Almost 80 percent of my patients are Vitamin D deficient. So why is treating and obtaining normal Vitamin D levels important? We know the deficiency can adversely affect our bones, insulin production, immune function, and even worsen our memory according to some studies. In recent years, more primary care physicians are checking patients’ Vitamin D levels, especially in those older than 65. Dark-skinned or higher pigmented individuals have a higher risk of Vitamin D deficiency.
The lab tests for 25-[(OH)D] or 25-hydroxyvitamin D while there are 2 types of Vitamin D. Ergocalciferol, is obtained from dietary vegetable sources and oral supplements. Cholecalciferol is obtained primarily from skin exposure to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation in sunlight or the ingestion of food sources. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for adults is 600 international units (IU) per day or 800 IU daily for those older than 70. However, in my experience, many patients require a much higher dose of 1000 to 5000 IU per day. Foods that are rich in Vitamin D include fish like salmon, trout, tuna, and halibut, and dairy products like milk and yogurt.
You are considered Vitamin D deficient when your blood level is below 20 ng/ml, insufficient between 20 and 30, and normal between 30
and 80 ng/ml. When your levels are 30 or less, it’s almost impossible to correct from just sun exposure and food. Supplementing Vitamin D comes in various strengths, forms, and dosing considerations.
Your dosing may require adjustments based on factors like prior gastrointestinal surgeries, kidney conditions, osteoporosis, malabsorption syndromes, taking steroids, or eating disorders. Most supplements come in tablet or gelcap forms, are over the counter, and are typically well-tolerated. Occasionally I prescribe a higher weekly dose when levels are extremely low. Most patients also require the supplement to maintain a normal Vitamin D level.
Most of you reading this article probably have a low Vitamin D level. The good part is that it’s easy to diagnose via a blood test, treat with over the counter supplement, and has a low side effect profile. Before starting any treatment, always consult with your trusted health care professional. So, as you head south for the winter break, remember to supplement your Vitamin D and not rely on how much sun you get on the vacation.

Take a drive around the North Shore and you’ll see a bank on just about every corner. What you might not see are branches of California-based Wells Fargo Bank, but that doesn’t mean North Shore residents can’t benefit from Wells Fargo Private Bank investment and credit services.
Wells Fargo opened its first investment office to serve the North Shore in Northbrook in 2016. At the time, Senior Vice President and Wealth Advisor Colleen McCaffrey told Sheridan Road, “Chicago is a priority ‘high growth’ market for the Wells Fargo Private Banking footprint. Our plan from day one was to build out a strong base of operations at our downtown location and then expand in the north suburbs.”
Since then, the bank has expanded its presence in the North Shore by offering a suite of investment and wealth management services. In addition, the bank has increased its credit options by offering strategies to help clients optimize cash flow, increase tax efficiencies, finance purchases of real estate and other assets, manage investment allocations, and realize their estate financial planning goals.
Frank Carbonara, Senior Vice President and Regional Private Banking Manager, leads a team of Private Bankers for Wells Fargo’s Private Bank in Illinois. Frank and his team provide credit strategies that are customized for each client, which can play an important role in their client’s wealth management plans. Carbonara says the foundation for providing quality service in the Chicago market is the bank’s “team” approach to building trust and relationships with clients.
“Getting to know a client through a discovery process and understanding their short-term and long-term financial needs and goals, is key to the foundation we build with our clients,” Carbonara says. “We want to understand what’s truly most important to them and their families, and provide resources and solutions to help them.”
Whether it’s financing a deal, offering investment opportunities, or helping clients think through their estate planning, it’s all rooted in Wells Fargo Private Bank’s underlying philosophy of building trust with clients, and the bank’s relationship managers’ goal of becoming a trusted advisors.
“In order to have the tough conversations there needs to be a comfort level in place,” says Lisa Bertagna, Senior Vice President and Senior Private Banker/Market Leader for Wells Fargo’s North Shore market. “Once the conversation flows freely we can go from need to need and watch how the simple act of unlocking one door can lead to opening another door to another goal.”
And once clients start working with Wells Fargo, the bank stays with them throughout the journey.
“Our customers appreciate having a series of benchmarks we can look at from month to month that can show them they’re on the right track,” Bertagna adds. “For most people, that provides so much comfort.”

The right first job after college can often set the course for a successful career. However, graduates often don’t have the training and background to navigate the complex employment landscape.
That’s where Campus2Career (C2C) steps in. “When we founded C2C 10 years ago in 2009, there was a clear demand to create a new category of coaching and counseling services for young adults,” Frank Schroeder, founder of C2C, says. “For the most part, they had completed college without a clear idea of what they wanted to do professionally and virtually no clue about sound and successful ways to land the job of their choice.”
Not much has changed. The job market remains a challenge for many recent graduates, not to mention a point of anxiety for their parents. C2C’s programs, exclusively for millenials and Gen Z, are designed to help graduates adapt and prepare for a career. The focus is on helping clients land their first job or an internship that can blaze a path to future success.
“In some cases, the client is having no success finding a job. We get it. In other cases, it’s as simple as parents who would like to see their child out of the house and productive after their major investment in four years in college,” Schroeder says. “Whatever the case,
navigating today’s job market for the first time is daunting and often discouraging. Happily, our clients and parents have found our hands-on approach effective and rewarding.”
Potential clients need look no further than C2C’s whopping 98.7 percent success rate for clients who find a meaningful job in his or her field of choice. Schroeder points to the organization’s ability to differentiate its clients from other job seekers—as well as its fully engaged coaches and advisory board members who have long track records with C2C—as keys to success.
“We stick to our knitting,” Schroeder says. “We don’t cut corners on our service. We remain true to our process because we know it works so well.”

WORDS BY STEVEN BLOCH, M.D.Plastic Surgery Update: ExoFlo For Hair
Restoration
The standard hair restoration treatment called PRP takes 6-9 months to cause significant visible hair growth … imagine if you could see that same growth in just 6-8 weeks? (And sometimes less as you can see below.)
A new treatment called ExoFlo now allows us to do that for most patients. PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. By injecting a patient’s platelet cells into the scalp, we attract stem cells that cause new hair growth. But what gives those stem cells their amazing powers? The answer is over 1,000 protein growth factors contained in vesicles called exosomes. Your stem cells release these vesicles then the growth factors inside “wake up” follicles and grow new hair.
ExoFlo contains only those stem cell vesicles packaged in a small liquid vial. Each cubic centimeter of ExoFlo contains at least 10 billion exosomes.
Injecting ExoFlo into the scalp offers tremendous advantages over PRP:
• Significant hair growth in just 6-8 weeks versus 6-9 months with PRP
• No downtime because unlike PRP, ExoFlo causes no redness or inflammation of the scalp
• Better results with often stubborn female hair loss
• A near painless procedure because we can now use a smaller insulin syringe
• Fewer treatments (most initial patients have required just a single session)
• The assurance we’re injecting an active regenerative product because the carefully measured exosomes come from meticulously screened younger patients
Perhaps the primary benefit of ExoFlo is safety. ExoFlo has been injected thousands of times without a single recorded case of any adverse reactions. The reason is that we’re simply injecting natural protein growth factors that are already in all our bodies.
BodyByBloch is proud to have been chosen to be the first Chicago area plastic surgery practice to offer ExoFlo to patients (just as we were among the first to offer Botox as well as new laser technologies for body contouring.) As with those advances we believe ExoFlo will also soon become the standard of care in the Chicago area.

Former lawyer Joe Brown, father to makeup industry powerhouse and former Sheridan Road cover girl Bobbi Brown, embarked on a new career as a children’s book author at the age of 70. Now 84, the author and grandfather is still sparking the imagination of kids across the globe.
WORDS BY ALICE YORK / ILLUSTRATION BY ROBERT RISKOMarceau is my name and this is my tale... And so begins the story of the now-beloved children’s book character, and more importantly, the tale of his creator, Joe Brown, and his second chapter.
Brown’s own story begins in Chicago. A lawyer at just 21, he practiced for 50 years, taking a few breaks here and there to pursue other adventures when law became too “stu y,” like taking people all over the world in his chartered airplanes and renting beachfront homes to the rich and famous in Honolulu.
But these business endeavors are not the heart of this story. e really good stu begins when Brown’s children were young. He began to tuck them into bed with stories he created about a New York taxi driver named Marceau who would share stories with a young passenger in his backseat. In those stories, he has a superpower: he can speak to and interact with animals, using this power to solve problems and help those in need.
Unlike most do-it-yourself bedtime stories, Brown’s were not only more thrilling and far more creative than most, but every single one was told completely in rhyme. “When we were young, my siblings and I used to write rhymes back and forth, teasing each other,” Brown laughs. “Rhyming just comes naturally to me.”
After a while, his children asked him to write these stories down, and they read them together until time went on, as it does, and those sheets of paper ended up in a little white box in the attic and the three children grew up, got married, and had children of their own.
Flipping the pages forward to his 70th birthday, Brown found himself in Telluride with family to celebrate. Daughter Bobbi said she needed to stop in their favorite local bookstore to pick something up. When they arrived Brown saw a book with a very familiar name on its cover—for his birthday, she had gathered those special bed-
time stories from the attic and compiled them into a hardcover book, printing 100 copies. “Here I was, all of a sudden an author,” recalls Brown. “I thought, ‘What an incredibly nice thing to be.’” Brown gave away those 100 books to friends, receiving a great response from all who read them. He quit law and decided to dedicate himself to writing: “ e best retirement I could ask for,” he says.
Fairly early on, his stories caught the eye of Scholastic, and the new author and media company developed an inspiring partnership, sending Brown into schools across the globe—from Native American reservations to Ho Chi Minh City—and enough copies for all in attendance to take one home, free of charge.
ere Brown reads to the children, usually 100 or more at a time, from 3rd to 6th grade, and talks with them. “ ere really is such a place called imagination—I show them how to get there,” he explains. “I teach them that imagination is the most important thing in the entire world, that nothing has ever been created without rst being imagined, and that it’s the most private place—no one can get in there but you.”
He has worked closely with his illustrators to bring to life his creations, and help transport readers to wherever Marceau must go to save the day, whether the rainforest, or closer to home, during Hurricane Katrina. In addition to the power of imagination, Brown’s books emphasize vocabulary building, through sophisticated word choice (and accompanying de nitions), and pronunciation, through their rhyming structure.
of imagination, Brown’s grandchildren in the writing process over the years and they have
e author has included his 13 grandchildren in the writing process over the years and they have also served as namesakes for some of the books’ many animal characters, like Maxwell Moose. Now at 84 years old with nine books published, the Lincolnwood resident says, “I love what I’m doing—it’s my favorite thing in the world to do.” May we all be willing to take the leap to let our imaginations lead the way.
