“We just installed all new windows at our house and we love them! Before we made our decision we went to the manufacturer’s plant to see how the windows are made. We were concerned at first because Russ’s price was more than half of his competitors quoted price. After our tour we were very comfortable with our decision. Installation day was quick and painless. Our house was left in great condition. I highly recommend this company!”

We understand that your health and well-being affect every aspect of your life. We will work with you to prioritize your health by focusing on your wellness goals. Whether you want to stay active, better manage a chronic condition, or seek a more personalized health care experience, we are by your side. Rush Concierge Medicine is a membership-based primary care practice that focuses on highly personalized, accessible care. Our clinic is conveniently located in downtown Hinsdale.
As a member, you’ll have a personal physician and nurse navigator as your partners in every aspect of your health. Your team is always a simple call, email or text away — 24 hours a day, seven days a week. With same- or next-day appointments available, they’ll prioritize your concerns quickly.
“With concierge medicine, you have access to your doctor and nurse any time, and we really serve as your quarterback in care,” says Luan Elezi, MD, family medicine physician with Rush Concierge Medicine. “Our goal is to help you open up and discuss your health concerns so we can establish an open relationship and true partnership.”
To build this partnership, Rush Concierge Medicine is tackling two of the biggest challenges in health care: difficulty accessing care and not having enough time with your doctor.
“Our patients are in the office for 90 minutes to two hours for their comprehensive physical,” says Marie Runyan, RN, BSN, concierge nurse navigator. “Many concerns come out when you have more time together, so that helps us really get to know you.”
The goal of breaking down these time and access barriers is to foster a strong partnership between you and your care team — which can ultimately help improve your overall health and wellness.
“Concierge medicine is more personalized and convenient,” Runyan says. “For example, if you wake up not feeling well, we’ll get you in right away. You’ll see your physician who knows you, your health history, your medications and your background.
Concierge medicine also makes it easier to manage the complexities of health care. “We will help you navigate everything from annual wellness exams to chronic illnesses and beyond,” Runyan says. “Knowing we’re there as your partner takes the pressure off of you to juggle it all.”
A lot of people find their way to concierge medicine when they are ready and able to invest in their health. “Our goal is to optimize your health and focus on prevention so we can help you be more proactive with your health rather than reactive,” says Elezi.
To do this, Rush Concierge Medicine provides recommended screening and prevention testing specific to your needs. Your care team will work with you to determine if a deeper dive into different aspects of your health would be helpful based on your history and risk factors.
“Many of our patients are prioritizing their health, and they come to us looking for ways to prolong their life through prevention,” Elezi says. “By offering much more comprehensive testing, we can do more proactive disease prevention because we have more data to guide it.”
Concierge medicine can also be a game changer if you’re managing chronic conditions. Your concierge medicine team will help you coordinate appointments with your specialists and navigate the system, ensuring that nothing falls through the cracks.
“When you’re seeing five different specialists, there’s so much information, and there can be so much disconnect between providers,” Elezi says. “We know exactly who you see, all your medications, all your concerns, and all your appointments. That allows us to collaborate with your specialists, advocate for you and make sure everyone is on the same page.”
If you’re interested in becoming a member of Rush Concierge Medicine, you can schedule a complimentary meet-and-greet with the concierge medicine team to get a feel for the practice and providers.
To schedule a meet-and-greet or to learn more about Rush Concierge Medicine, visit rush.edu/concierge-medicine or call (630) 724-1680. Rush Concierge Medicine is located at 32 E. 1st St. in Hinsdale.

was born in Ukraine and thinks of her early years as a global adventure with stops in Prague, Toronto, Chicago, and eventually Seattle, where she studied nursing. “Living in Seattle was a blast, especially in my tiny yet fabulous studio right in the heart of Pike Place Market. Surrounded by the buzz of the city, it was an exciting time, but after a few years, I felt ready for something new. That’s when I followed my heart to Poland for medical school—quite literally, since I met my husband during the first week of orientation,” Olya says.
The couple eventually found themselves back in Chicagoland, building a life they love together in Hinsdale, a town Olya is proud to call home.
With her husband Paul, a board-certified medical doctor, Olya is the co-founder of InfuseWell Concierge, a business born from their shared passion for preventative care and holistic health. They specialize in regenerative medicine, focusing on treatments like physiciansupervised NAD+ IV infusions, medical weight loss programs, exosomes, and PRP (platelet-rich plasma) therapies. She says, “With my extensive background in nursing and my husband’s medical expertise, we’ve created a service dedicated to cutting-edge, science-driven wellness solutions that don’t just help people recover but empower them to thrive.”
At home, Olya and Paul are raising two beautiful children, ages five and four. “Family time is a priority for us, whether we’re traveling or doing everyday things like running around between school drop-offs, afterschool activities, or simply enjoying a family dinner together. These moments keep me grounded and fuel my passion for creating a life rooted in wellness, both personally and professionally,” Olya says.

Do you have a mantra? “We need not wait to see what others do.” — Mahatma Gandhi. This quote serves as a daily reminder to lead by example and to stay true to my values without waiting for external approval or validation. What organizations do you support? I proudly support the Hinsdale Junior Women’s Club. It’s an organization that allows me to contribute to the betterment of our community, something I’m passionate about. What’s your signature entertaining style? I absolutely love hosting, and Thanksgiving is a highlight every year. My husband and I make the entire meal ourselves, including two turkeys, spicy Italian sausage stuffing, and a cheesy corn casserole that’s a family favorite. There’s something truly special about gathering loved ones around a table filled with homemade dishes. I’m a bit of a perfectionist, so no detail is too small. From the menu to the décor, I ensure everything is thoughtfully curated and of the highest quality. Any daily rituals that make you feel centered? We bought a cold plunge about a year ago, and after months of pretending I’d use it “tomorrow,” I finally took the plunge—literally. Now, I’m hooked. It’s like getting a shot of energy and a dopamine boost all at once. Who knew sitting in freezing water would make me feel so alive? It’s shocking how much it’s changed my day-to-day energy. Music, you love? I have an eclectic taste in music, but I’m particularly drawn to pop. There’s something uplifting about it, especially during morning drives or while I’m at home. Train is one of my favorite bands, and their music has a timeless quality that I adore. Favorite autumn traditions? Fall is a time for reflection and renewal in our household. We make it a point to take family photos every year—it’s a tradition that captures the passage of time in a meaningful way. I also use the season to reorganize and refresh our home, preparing for the months ahead. We love visiting pumpkin patches and cozying up as a family. Every year, we also take a weeklong trip to Mexico just before Thanksgiving—it’s our way of soaking up some warmth before the long Chicago winter.
What’s your go-to outfit? My go-to look is effortlessly chic—jeans paired with a cozy sweater and a stylish sneaker. I love being comfortable but still feeling polished for whatever the day holds. Is there anything you can’t leave the house without? I never leave the house without my Stanley cup filled with electrolytes—it’s my secret to staying hydrated and energized throughout the day. Where do they know you by name? The Starbucks near Whole Foods knows me well—I’m there so often for my caramel macchiato that the baristas always have it ready when I walk in! Do you have a favorite memory of living in the area? Attending Uniquely Thursdays right after we closed on our house—it was like the stars aligned. The kids fell in love with it, we made new friends, and it was our first real taste of what makes this community so special. It was like the universe was saying, “Welcome home! Favorite festival or special event? Without a doubt, Uniquely Thursdays! It’s become a beloved tradition for our family, and we look forward to it every summer. If an ad agency asked you to write a commercial for your town, what would you say? Hinsdale: where charming meets convenience, and you’re just a walk away from great coffee, beautiful parks, and a community that feels like family. Oh, and did I mention the unbeatable school district?
Do you wear any outfits or accessories that like too much day to day but is perfect for the city? On most days, I prefer to keep it casual, but whenever we venture into the city, I love to step it up with a pair of statement heels. It adds an extra level of sophistication to my outfit that feels perfectly suited to the urban energy of Chicago. What’s in your bag? I keep it simple—just my phone and Summer Fridays lip balm. I can’t stand chapped lips, and Apple Pay has made life so much easier that I rarely carry a wallet anymore View that never gets old? The Chicago Riverwalk is absolutely stunning. No matter how many times I visit, the view always feels fresh and inspiring. Best quick bite or hidden gem? Alla Vita might not be a hidden gem, but it’s definitely a family favorite. Whether we’re sneaking in a weeknight date or gathering everyone for a meal, it always hits the spot! Do you have a favorite museum? The Art Institute of Chicago. I can get lost in the Impressionist wing for hours—it’s like taking a mini European vacation without the jet lag. Plus, it’s a great excuse to feel cultured while sipping coffee in their courtyard. What is your favorite movie filmed or set in Chicago? Home Alone, for sure. Not just because it’s a classic, but because my kids are obsessed with it—and watching them laugh at the same scenes I loved growing up makes my heart burst. Also, who wouldn’t want to live in that house?
Is your home bursting at the seams like a Thanksgiving turkey? If clutter has you feeling stuffed, it’s time to carve out a fresh start!
As your local real estate agent, I’m here to help you gobble up the opportunity to sell your packed-to-the-brim house or find a new space that feels just right. Let’s whisk away the clutter and roast up some new possibilities!
Give the gift of a true custom shopping experience. You’ll receive a unique, one-on-one consultation in their luxury showroom that specializes in men’s custom clothing from jeans to tuxedos. Here are some gift ideas that you might not expect to find.

An issue that has been coming up more and more in our practice, is the issue of divorcing a narcissist. We have had to become familiar, not only with the narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), but with the strategies necessary to help our clients successfully navigate divorcing a narcissist.
Divorcing a narcissist presents unique challenges that differ from a typical separation. NPD is more than just selfish behavior; it involves an inflated sense of self-importance, a lack of empathy, and an overwhelming need to dominate. While only a small percentage of people have a formal diagnosis of NPD, many more display narcissistic traits, which complicates the divorce process for their partners.
A narcissist views divorce not as a mutual separation but as a battle to be won. They often manipulate, delay, and use tactics like gaslighting to maintain control, making the process emotionally and financially draining for their spouse and their children. Once the spouse finally gets the courage to divorce a narcissist, they often enter ready for a head-on fight, but this approach typically leads to extended conflict, increased stress, frustration, and ultimately exhaustion.
In these situations, it becomes essential to take a strategic approach that prioritizes freedom and peace of mind over “winning” every argument. Engaging an experienced attorney who understands narcissistic behavior is critical. We are able to anticipate the narcissist’s manipulative moves and prevent unnecessary legal delays. Judges and the court system can also be valuable in managing disputes, as narcissists tend to resist compromise. Court orders, pretrial recommendations, and judicial interventions can help ensure that the process moves forward, limiting the narcissist’s attempts to control it.
Maintaining clear boundaries throughout the divorce is another important step. Limiting communication to written forms, like emails or texts, not only provides a record of interactions but also reduces the opportunity for emotional manipulation. Narcissists thrive on emotional engagement, so staying calm and detached (the “grey rock” method) helps prevent the escalation further.
While narcissists often try to drag out the divorce by filing unnecessary motions and creating roadblocks, patience is key. Giving in to their demands to expedite the process may seem tempting, but this can come at the cost of your long-term well-being. Instead, maintaining a steady, patient approach ensures that you remain in control of the situation, without sacrificing your future.
Finally, it’s essential to prioritize your mental health throughout
the process. The emotional strain of divorcing a narcissist can be overwhelming, so seeking therapy ahead of filing for divorce and building a strong support network is vital for maintaining your emotional resilience.
Ultimately, the focus in divorcing a narcissist should not be on defeating them in every dispute but on regaining your freedom and protecting your family’s future. Narcissists will rarely admit defeat, but with the right strategy and the use of judicial tools, you can move forward with your life.

There’s always dancing at The Community House (TCH). From Toddler Ballet to Burning Beats cardio class, music and movement fills the air alongside the squeak of sneakers and bouncing basketballs. One night a year, the dancing is a more formal, the air more filled with magic, and the conversation a touch more celebratory. The Holiday Ball, this year happening on December 7, is a culmination of one year’s good work and a look ahead at all that can be accomplished moving forward.
The fitting theme is Winter of Wonder. Chosen by Cochairs Maureen and Chris Kunitz, Dana and Ryan Reko, and Susie and Ian Thorpe, it’s meant to convey a modern take on holiday traditions and allow the brilliant Kristina Taheri and her team to create wintertime scenes with elements of surprise. “It’s not super traditional and we all love how the acronym is WOW because we want people to feel wowed all evening,” Maureen Kunitz explains.
This dynamic group of friends has set a bold goal for fundraising and are committed to reaching or exceeding it through ticket sales, the wine auction, live and silent auctions, and sponsorships, which have become an integral and much appreciated element of The Holiday Ball.
“I only recently learned that The Community House is privately supported and receives no tax dollars. Given how much our families enjoy all the programming, we want to do all we can to make sure it continues and is available to all,” Dana Ryan says.
“We’re always here, and The Community House is a huge part of our lives. We’ve hosted birthday parties for the kids here, Stage Door Theater is a treasure, and we have a budding chef who has taken cooking classes here.” Susie Thorpe says.
A successful Winter of Wonder will ensure that all our neighbors have access to enrichment programs and support services. The evening will have a special focus on the SPARK Youth Development Initiative, which is dedicated to unlocking the potential of youth in unincorporated Willowbrook.
It is a comprehensive approach that goes beyond academics and fosters growth in every possible way. There’s personalized mentoring, captivating field trips, and en-
lightening career exploration, all planned to ignite sparks within young minds. Knowing that life is challenging, and everyone can use an expert to listen and help, licensed clinical counselors provide essential mental health services without the worry of large hourly fees. SPARK mentors guide young minds through homework help and social and emotional wellness activities during the school year. In the summer months, pool days and off-site adventures add fun-filled memories.
Because of the tremendous support from Holiday Ball guests and sponsors, plus thoughtful fundraising yearround, these services are provided at affordable rates that help enrich the lives of each student and family.
Thoughtful leadership from TCH has bolstered the SPARK Initiative through the years. It opens doors for participants and for volunteers and mentors who meet wonderful young people with whom they might not otherwise cross paths. “The connections are everything,” Dana says.
Winter of Wonder is the ideal night out for couples
“...we want to do all we can to make sure The Community House continues and is available to all.”
and friends. The energy of TCH Board of Trustees, the Co-chairs, and Host Committee is infectious in the best possible way. At the heart of The heart of The Community House is community and being a part of this special night is the best way to celebrate it.

The holidays are officially here and the Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club (HJWC) is kicking off the season dashing all the way to the finish line. Now in its fourth year, this annual event promises to bring holiday cheer to runners and walkers of all ages, blending festive fun with a spirited race through the streets of Hinsdale.
As one of the star events for HJWC’s Health Committee, the Jingle Dash is organized by this year’s dedicated co-chairs Heather Beck, Olya Borsuk, and Alyssa Dore. Together, their mission focuses on promoting health and fitness while raising funds for the club’s philanthropic initiatives—which support local charities and community programs.
Last year, the 5k race attracted 300 participants, and the committee is excited about its continued growth. This year marks HJWC’s 75th anniversary, and they hope to achieve an even bigger turnout to celebrate community and give back.
“This holiday season, we’re excited to kick off Jingle Dash with the goal of raising funds for the amazing organizations that have shared their needs with us,” says Dore. “We’d love to help as many organizations as we can and bring some cheer to our community along the way.”
The committee also aims to raise awareness, promote health, and emphasize the importance of giving back while showcasing the impactful work of the women’s club. They are thrilled to see Jingle Dash’s growth year after year.
“This event is particularly significant as it helps the community not only kick off the holiday season but fosters a spirit of togetherness and joy,” says Borsuk. “It’s also a wonderful way for families to bond and for the community to unite in celebration.”
“Family is at the heart of everything we do, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see the families of Hinsdale and the surrounding communities come together for a meaningful cause,” adds Beck.
“Every participant in Jingle Dash plays a crucial role in helping us support those in need,” says Dore. “Our hope is that this event also inspires others to get involved and see how they can make a real difference.”
Events such as the Jingle Dash are vital for showcasing the club’s mission and highlighting the importance of philanthropy in the community. Last year alone, HJWC raised over $300,000 for local organizations and scholarships for young women. These grants support a wide range of needs, from mattresses and bed frames to athletic wheelchairs, making a lasting impact on many lives.
Participants can look forward to a joyful atmosphere filled with holiday music, photo ops with Santa and Mrs. Claus, and special treats awaiting them at the finish line. “Holiday costumes are highly encouraged, and the event is sure to feature plenty of festive outfits,” says Beck. “To keep the holiday spirit alive, festive surprises are planned, promising an unforgettable experience for everyone.”
Borsuk gives participants some hot tips: “Arrive early to soak in the festive atmosphere, secure a good spot, and dress in layers to stay warm—it’s December!” she advises. “Holiday attire is always a hit, and don’t forget to capture a photo with Santa and Mrs. Claus after the race! But most importantly, bring friends and family to cheer you on and enjoy the postrace treats together. It’s going to be a fun and festive morning, so get ready to dash into the holiday spirit with us!”
The Jingle Dash trail begins at Robbins Park and winds through Hinsdale’s most picturesque streets, offering a delightful glimpse of festive decorations along the way. Runners and walkers will head east to Oak Street before looping back to Bruner Street to the west, passing by notable landmarks like Madison Elementary School and Dietz Park.
Jingle Dash is December 8 at 8 to 11 a.m. at Robbins Park. Tickets are available at hjwc.us.

A chic new Greek restaurant in La Grange redefines the taverna experience for a new generation of suburban diners.
WORDS BY PETER MICHAEL / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR
The gawkers have arrived. Maybe a dozen of them, all jostling for position along the glass. They’ve formed a single file line along the exterior of mána, the new Greek restaurant in downtown La Grange, and are staring at us through the restaurant’s floor-to-ceiling windows.
A twentysomething couple. A few seniors. A family of four. And a young woman with a phone in her hand, laughing hysterically. One woman has cupped her hands into the shape of a periscope, nose practically smooshed against the glass, trying to figure out what in the hell is going on inside the restaurant.
Answer: We’re having the time of our lives.
There are about 90 of us inside. Virtually all of us are wearing kitschy Greek sailors’ caps. They’re white, black, and gold along with tiny embroidered nautical anchors. The last time these were in fashion The Love Boat was still a primetime hit. Nevertheless, we’re playing dress-up, knowing we can snap compromising candids of our tablemates looking like a Greek version of Ginger and The Skipper from Gilligan’s Island
Two older Greek musicians—one stationed at a keyboard, the other holding an electric mandolin—are making their way, song by song, through the Alpha to Zeta list of taverna classics. Admittedly, this is one loud dining room. Sound doesn’t just bound off the walls, it thunders and bellows as if we’re conversing inside a racquetball court.
But the sounds tonight are joyful. Music. Conversation. Laughter. And there’s a recurring chorus of three-second-long audible purrs of excitement—“Woooows” and “mmmmms”— about the food and cocktails, which everyone knows is the true
love language of Greece.
Mána’s cocktails are smooth, riotously colorful and, dare it be said, slightly poetic. Peachy liquids. Lemon peel yellows. Dark Tyrian purples. Flower petals appear to bloom out of highball glasses. Plus, each drink is named after a strong Greek emotion, which is a clever marketing gambit.
Makes one wonder: If you order the hara (translation: joyful) will the resulting mix of mezcal, thyme, prickly pear and Greek aronia berries grant you instant happiness? Or if you knock back one of mána’s “euphoric” elixirs—chile-infused vodka, lime, dill and bitters—will all that liquid Greek fire make you see stars?
Then there’s the food, served on plates the color of volcanic sea salt and cute wooden bowls veined and grained with wavy swirls. The menu reads like it’s a celebration of rustic taverna favorites but looks and tastes like they were whipped up in some highend resort on Santorini or Mykonos. The food is chic but hearty, approachable yet undeniably photogenic.
Everyone’s favorite Greek eggplant casserole, moussaka, arrives as a vegetarian entrée, layered like a mille-feuille with mushrooms, thinly sliced potatoes and zucchini. One table over, someone has ordered a giant grilled lobster for two, which sits atop pasta dressed in an ouzo cream. Nearby there’s an octopus appetizer so oversized you’d swear it was cleaved off of some mythical Aegean kraken—perhaps Scylla finally got what was coming to her?—and served with a fava bean spread and briny caperberry bombs.
If you want your favorite old-school Greektown classics, they’re here, too. Wood-fired lamb chops. Char-grilled chicken skewers. Feta and tomato salads. But how could you resist the more playful
stuff, like a wagyu-beef gyro? Or charred beats dressed in a burnt-honey vinaigrette?
At one point, a broad-shouldered man in black—black t-shirt, black pants, bald as Kojak—walks over to the mandolin player and whispers a command into his ear. Suddenly, the play list picks up the pace, and out marches the restaurant’s entire waitstaff, twirling napkins over their head like they’re mini helicopter blades. In the past, Greeks broke plates—and later, threw carnations— to celebrate a great meal or performance. Economically speaking, a napkin dance is a lot more economical than broken dishware.
The dancers snake between the tables in a Greek-style conga line. The rest of us start twirling our own napkins in response. The festive dance party only lasts a few minutes—ownership doesn’t want our food to grow cold—but our chorus of cheers reverberates through the windows, stopping sidewalk strollers dead in their tracks.
Onlookers lean closer to the glass. There’s now a great wall of smiles, both inside and out. Cameras are flashing everywhere. The man in black, now stationed by the kitchen, nods his head.
This is all his plan. The Man in Black: Ted Maglaris. He’s co-owner of the causal Greek restaurant Prasino across the street, which introduced La Grange to a healthier version of a Greek diner way back in 2009. That restaurant still stands but this one, mána (the Greek word for mother), is something sleeker.
Not too long ago, he was living in Miami. Sandy beaches. Guayabera shirts. Winters where the thermostats rarely touches 60. Life was good. Maglaris is your prototypical hard-charging entrepreneurial. He’s built
businesses around exotic cars, distilled spirits and restaurants. “Miami is a great place to enjoy yourself,” he says, “but if you set a meeting for 2 p.m., you’re lucky if someone shows up by 4.”
His mom still lives here, so Maglaris felt it was time for a change of pace. Why not come home and launch a modern Greek taverna? Mána is designed, he says, to be more affordable but serve elevated food.
Maglaris loves that word: elevated. He wanted the décor to feel elevated, too. Open, airy, modern. It’s a space that tries to emulate the bougainvillea-lined, olive-tree shaded al fresco spots that draw in the wellheeled spots in Athens.
Maglaris says he wanted to be honor Chicago’s Greek restaurant roots. Gratitude should be given, he says, to his father’s generation, who understood that Chicagoans like big portions, lots of charbroiled lamb and free parking. He says a lot of those hard-working Greek restaurateurs poured their lives into their restaurants, precisely so their kids could become lawyers and doctors and MBAs and not have to worry about razor-thin profit margins.
So to be clear: mána is not your grandfather’s taverna. Maglaris hired chefs who were cooking in restaurants across Greece. He wanted to offer dishes that his mother and aunts used to cook, only in a more elevated way. So he told his chefs what he wanted and gave them the freedom to prepare them as they saw fit. “No one can cook like our mothers and grandmothers,” says Maglaris, “but I don’t want those recipes to get lost. We can preserve them by changing them in our own way: better
mana provides plenty of quality Greek wines, but the cocktail list glows and shimmers by playing with savory staples of the Greek table.
Nostalgía/Nostalgia:
There’s something about a canary yellow drink that always turns my head. Tastes just as tantalizing. Imagine a Greek play on a mint julep. Rittenhouse Rye shaken with basil, lemon, saffron and a touch of sweet lychee fruit to balance out all those diabolically savory notes.
Zontanós (alive): Can you say brambleberries, friends? Gin mashed with a basket full of berries— blackberries and raspberries— with a hint of lime and, believe it or not, an undercurrent of violets. Semi-sweet, floral, and undeniably nuanced.
plating, modern cooking techniques, unique ingredients.”
Which is exactly what mána has done. There’s a part of me that bristles at the idea of a beef gyro. A real gyro is speared cuts of pork or chicken that’s roasted on all sides until it glistens in its own juices. How does Maglaris preserve that formula? Domestic wagyu New York strip steaks, seasoned like gyros and sliced to look like long jagged slices. The beef is char-broiled and then panfried so all those juices are matted onto the meat. The dish won me over in an unexpected way—call it Gyros 2.0—especially when topped with a dollop of thick Greek yogurt tzatziki the way they’d make it in the old country.
Mána serves an incredibly tender lamb fricassee, but what made me want to bolt from my dining chair and wave my napkin a second time was the quality of mána’s seafood offerings. I grew up on simple tomato and red onion salads, the kind that leech so much juice that you wouldn’t dare eat them without a loaf of bread to sop up the bottom of the bowl. Mána’s ceviche dresses tender cuts of whitefish in the same salad but adds a brunoise of honeydew melon and cucumber, lots of dill and a flurry of red pepper flakes. It’s neither sweet or mildly spicy, not briny or acidic but a well-balanced combination of all of the above.
Do yourself a favor: Make sure someone at your table orders tsipoura, i.e., Greek sea bream. It’s a deceptively simple preparation, but immaculately tender and moist. This is Blue Zone cooking at its best. The kitchen will debone it for you, which makes wolfing it down that much easier. Follow it up, with our favorite dessert: Two scoops of pistachio ice cream, drizzled with olive oil, and dappled with salt crystals. Imagine a more sophisticated version of salted peanut butter ice cream.
Mána, it should also be noted, is one suave-looking space. Wind-swept earth tones. Lots of black wicker. White-washed brick. Floating shelves filled with curated Greek knickknacks. All of which adds to the experience. Something tells me all those eavesdroppers snapping pictures outside are going to flip back
through their phone, look at our funny hats and napkin twirling, and then zoom back here with the intent to sharing in the fun. When they taste what Maglaris is cooking, they’re going to stop gawking and start eating. Some menus, as it turns out, are worth more than a thousand words.

Thirty-five years ago, the fall of the Berlin Wall sparked the city’s rebirth and led to the rebuilding of the legendary Adlon Hotel as the Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin .
To visit Berlin is to get lost in its stories—tales of tragedy and triumph, resistance and resilience that span nearly eight centuries. Thirty-five years ago this month, one of its most compelling stories took place for all the world to see.
On November 9, 1989, the wall that had divided East Berlin from West Berlin for more than two decades finally came down. Families torn apart during the Cold War were reunited. Economic prosperity flowed from the West to the East. And Berlin was reborn to become one of Europe’s most decadently chic, cosmopolitan cities.
Our Berlin sojourn begins at a site that, like the city, figuratively rose from the rubble of the fallen Wall—the legendary Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin. Situated just steps from the iconic Brandenburg Gate, merely staying at the hotel is an immersion in 20th-century German history.
Lorenz Adlon opened the original Adlon Hotel in 1907 with much fanfare. Kaiser Wilhelm II, the last German Emperor and King of Prussia, attended the opening festivities and was one of the hotel’s biggest supporters as he sought to create an opulent gathering space for elite Berliners and visiting nobility.
A glamorous new era for Berlin had begun with the Adlon guest list reading like a “who’s who” of the German Empire and the Weimar Republic. Balls were hosted here. Kings and queens drank from the famous wine cellar. Hollywood celebrities, includ-
ing Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, and Charlie Chaplin, passed through its doors.
Lorenz Adlon died in 1921, leaving his fortune to his daughter and son, Louis Adlon. Louis and his wife, Hedda, (who established the hotel’s afternoon English tea tradition) ran the hotel during World War II setting up part of the hotel as a military hospital. News outlets from around the world, including the Chicago Tribune, established offices in the Adlon to cover the war. The area around Brandenburg Gate was designated as a neutral zone, hence the hotel’s nickname of “Little Switzerland.”
In 1945, after his release from a Russian interrogation, Louis Adlon died. That same year the hotel’s wine cellar caught fire, destroying all but one wing of the hotel. Devasted by the losses, Hedda Adlon took up residence at a hotel in Berlin owned by another prominent hotel family, the Kempinskis.
In 1957, Hedda sold the Adlon name to the Kempinskis. The hoteliers promised her that if the Berlin Wall ever came down and the city was reunited, the Adlon would be rebuilt in its former glory.
It was a day many never dreamed possible. But on August 23, 1997, the Adlon reopened as Hotel Adlon Kempinski. German Federal President Roman Herzog was the guest of honor, making the Adlon perhaps the only hotel in the world to have been opened twice by a head of state.
Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin is a painstaking replica of the original Aldon, which was demolished in 1984. From the iconic elephant fountain in the lobby that bears stained glass from the original to the vintage detail of the elevators, one would never know that this version of Adlon wasn’t built until the late 1990s.
The “new” Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin has 307 luxurious guest rooms and 78 fabulous suites (including several with a private butler). Carrying forward the prestigious Adlon pedigree, it regularly hosts the royals (there is a secret elevator and private entrance), celebrities, and leaders of today’s generation, including several U.S. presidents (President Barack Obama dined with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the hotel’s two-Michelin starred restaurant, Lorenz Adlon Esszimmer), the late Queen Elizabeth II, and the Prince and Princess of Wales (aka Kate and William).
Upon arrival at the hotel, one could be tempted to linger in its grand lobby, a space filled with Italian antiques, Murano glass chandeliers, and the iconic elephant fountain—a link between the hotel’s glorious past and present. But once we got the keys to The Brandenburg Suite, we couldn’t wait to check out the view.
It’s spectacular, of course, and there was a bottle of champagne with fruit and delicious Sawade Berlin chocolates waiting to enjoy as we opened the French windows for our first impressions of the city. The imposing Brandenburg Gate, a late 18th-century landmark, steals the scene as it reigns over a street (Pariser Platz) that is today filled with embassies from around the world.
Located in the heart of the Mitte neighborhood, the hotel offers an ideal place to explore the city’s many attractions (see
Best of Berlin), and the concierge has a wealth of information about available walking tours. We chose one that included several of the important nearby sites, including the poignant Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, which is aptly described as a “place of contemplation, a place of remembrance and warning.”
After an afternoon of touring, we were excited to return to the hotel and explore it further. Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin offers two separate wellness areas to relax and recharge. Treat yourself to a massage or beauty treatment at the Adlon Spa by Resense or check out the newly renovated, nearly 10,000-square foot Adlon Pool. In addition to the heated pool and whirlpool, there is an impressive new sauna menu featuring everything from a Finnish sauna to a steam bath in the style of an Arabian hammam.
There’s also a new pool bar that offers something for every palate from freshly prepared fruit and vegetable juices to Wiener schnitzel with cucumber and potato salad and, of course, the popular Adlon currywurst with edible gold leaf.
Speaking of food, the hotel’s dining offerings are next level. In addition to the daily champagne and caviar breakfast (which also includes a hearty German buffet and made-to-order options), the hotel has two fantastic restaurants. For truly fine dining, opt for the Lorenz Adlon Esszimmer. However, The Brasserie Quarré, which offers international, regionally inspired cuisine, is also excellent. Order the foie à la berlinoise (Berlin veal liver served with a potato waffle, apple ragout, and shallots) for a savory introduction to German cuisine.
Our days in Berlin passed far too quickly and we saw things there that I will never forget. The tragedies and triumphs of the war that tore this city apart are omnipresent. And yet, the reborn Hotel Adlon Kempinski stands as a testament to the reborn Berlin—a tangible celebration of freedom, unity, and enduring hope.

Berlin is a vibrant city, home to spectacular architecture, serene parks, world-famous museums, and sites that changed the course of history. Here are five things you won’t want to miss.
Several guided walking tours are available to see the remains of the Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie, a border crossing opened by the Allies after the city was divided in 1945. One of Berlin’s most recognizable sites, the checkpoint has been the setting for spy novels and cinematic thrillers like the James Bond movie Octopussy After you visit (and take a photo at) Checkpoint Charlie, tour
The Wall Museum at the East Side Gallery (the longest surviving section of the wall), an exhibition that uses more than 100 screens, projectors, and interactive displays to tell the story of its history, including the famous confrontation between American and Soviet tanks in 1961, and to honor those who were murdered while trying to cross the Wall.
In the heart of Berlin on Spreeinsel (Spree Island), you can visit five world-class museums that comprise a UNESCO World Heritage site. The first of the buildings, the Alte Museum (Old Museum) was built at Lustgarten in 1830 to house historically significant collections and art. In 1855, the Royal Prussian Museum—today known as the Neues Museum (New Museum) and home to the famous 3,000-year-old bust of Nefertiti—was added to the island, followed by the Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery) in 1876. In 1904, the neo-baroque Kaiser Friedrich Museum (today known as the Bode Museum) was built at the tip of Museum Island. The Pergamon Museum was added in 1930 as the last of the five. Although the Pergamon Museum is temporarily closed for renovation, you can still visit the Pergamon Museum: The Panorama exhibition to see some of its treasures.
Tiergarten Park, Berlin’s version of Manhattan’s Central Park, is literally just steps from the Hotel Adlon Kempinski Berlin. Walk through the Brandenburg Gate to enter the park, which stretches for more than 500 acres, to find a zoo, tree-lined paths for walking or jogging, cafes, several major memorials, including the Victory Column,
and an open-air gas lantern museum. The long stretch of green space is the site of former royal hunting grounds, which were converted to a park in the late 17th century by the Duke of Prussia. During World War II the park suffered major damage, and following the war Berliners cut down the park’s trees for fuel. The park was replanted in 1949 thanks to donations from across Germany. Today, it is the heart of the city and the center of Berlin life.
Home to the German parliament and the setting for some of the most turbulent moments in Berlin’s history, the 1894 Reichstag building was called “the pinnacle of bad taste” by Kaiser Wilhelm II. Over the 20th century, it served in many roles and, at one point, fell under Hitler’s control. By the end of World War II, it was in ruins. In 1990, the Reichstag was the site of the official German reunification ceremony and has since been restored and designed. One of the highlights of any visit to the Reichstag is its glass cupola dome—a symbol of Germany’s commitment to renewable energy.
Between 1965 and 1969, the Soviet-controlled German Democratic Republic built the Berliner Fernsehturm, a TV tower used to broadcast propaganda to East Berlin and to surveil the city. Today, under ownership of Magnicity (which also operates the 360 CHICAGO Observation Deck at the John Hancock Building) the Berlin TV Tower has been transformed into an observation deck with historical exhibits, a virtual reality experience, a bar, and a revolving restaurant. Featuring the most panoramic views of the city from dramatic heights, a visit to the tower is a must.
Salt Creek Swim and Tennis Club pulled out all the stops for their end-of-summer bash, transforming the club into a luxurious oasis reminiscent of The Hamptons (in Hinsdale). Hosted by Courtney and Kevin Casey, Megan and Michael Martin, and Dana and Ryan Reko, the party was a feast for the senses. Niche Catering offered an array of delectable bites, while the sounds of the Treble Monsters, accompanied by Violin Girl, who kept the guests grooving all night long. The pool area was transformed into a magical wonderland, illuminated by a sea of twinkling white lights that added an air of enchantment to the evening. From the delicious food to the infectious music, every detail of the soirée was carefully curated to ensure that guests had a fantastic time. It was a night to remember, filled with laughter, dancing, and plenty of summer fun. The Hamptons of Hinsdale came to life at the Salt Creek Swim and Tennis Club, leaving everyone in attendance with memories to last a lifetime. saltcreekclub.com

It was an afternoon to chat and relax poolside. Members of the Hinsdale chapter of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago Auxiliary and their friends gathered to soak in all the summer vibes. With a DJ, bubbles, and bites, this inaugural event made quite a splash while raising money for the IWS Family Health Center, which provides high quality care to children, families, and people of all ages. hinsdaleiws.com

odern Skin Dermatology, nestled in the heart of Hinsdale, is redefining skin care through innovative treatments and personalized care. At the forefront is Dr. Lana Kashlan, a highly respected expert in cosmetic dermatology known for her meticulous attention to detail and patient-centered approach.
As a non-surgical dermatologist, Dr. Kashlan skillfully combines lasers and other energy-based devices with injectables and skin care to create subtle, imperceptible enhancements that help patients achieve the skin they deserve. “Patients come to me because I’m known for my subtle approach—perfect for those who want to enhance their appearance without looking ‘done,’” she says. “They want to look their best, and that is my expertise.”
Dr. Kashlan’s journey into dermatology was influenced by her family of doctors and her own experiences with skin issues. “I know firsthand how much skin disease can affect your self-confidence and quality of life,” she says. Her passion for the field was ignited during her teenage years when a dermatologist transformed her life by providing the right treatment for her acne—helping her regain her confidence.
After completing her dermatology residency at Boston University, Dr. Kashlan returned to Chicago to work in private practice. Her career then took her to Dubai, where she served as the lead dermatologist at the largest multispecialty cosmetic clinic in the Middle East and built her reputation as a top cosmetic dermatologist where she continues to work with her celebrity patients Lindsay Lohan and Bravo reality stars Caroline Stansbury and Taleen Khanoyan. Wanting to be closer to her family, Dr. Kashlan decided to come home, settle in Burr Ridge, and open Modern Skin Dermatology in Hinsdale. “Nothing beats being close to family and it’s such a blessing to be here,” she says. “I’m thrilled to set up my practice in the neighborhood where my kids will grow up.” However, due to high demand, Dr. Kashlan continues to travel back to Dubai quarterly to see her patients.
Her practice in Hinsdale is not your average doctor’s office or commercial medspa. “Think of me as your dermatologist bestie here
to guide you through all the social media trends and marketing gimmicks—and help you look and feel your best,” she says.
She aims to assist patients, define their skin care goals, and create a plan using the safest evidence-based approach. “Sharing your cosmetic concerns can be intimidating and there is an element of vulnerability,” she says. “I strive to create an environment that is warm, inviting, and approachable.”
At Modern Skin Dermatology she not only focuses on honesty, but Dr. Kashlan also provides advanced technology in the pursuit of optimal skin care. As the first in Illinois to offer the Accure Laser for acne treatment, she provides long-term solutions without requiring patients to take oral medications or follow a specialized skin care regimen. Additionally, she specializes in a non-invasive device, Sofwave, for skin tightening. This is a no-downtime treatment that treats neck laxity, jawline definition, and brow lifting.
Prioritizing clear communication with her patients, she ensures they understand realistic outcomes and feel confident in their treatment choices. “I am always transparent with my patients about what we can and can’t achieve, what will look good, and what’s realistic versus what’s fake in the beauty industry,” she says. “I prioritize their best interests above all.”
She’s not afraid to advise her patients with a firm “no” if she believes a particular treatment won’t be beneficial for them. “It’s this candor that my patients appreciate, and they know I’m not trying to sell them on the latest trends,” she says. “My recommendations are based on scientific evidence and my clinical expertise.”
Dr. Kashlan blends expertise and compassion to transform skin care. Her commitment to transparency and personalized care, along with modern technology, enhances appearances and empowers patients to embrace their natural beauty. “This practice represents the culmination of all my professional experiences, and I am so excited to welcome patients to a truly unique dermatologic experience.”
