SECONDS TO NONE HIGHLAND PARK NATIVE BEN TATAR TALKS ABOUT HIS LATEST CHILDREN'S ALBUM. BY GREGG SHAPIRO THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Family music (what people of a certain age used to call children’s music) is a growing genre with no end in sight. The thing that makes the music family-friendly is that it can be enjoyed by people of all ages and isn’t as mind-numbing as some of that musical style of the past (I’m talking to you, Barney!), especially on repeat. Highland Park native Ben Tatar is a major player in the scene—one that is especially popular in Chicago and the North Shore. Tatar, an alum of Highland Park High School (class of ‘96), has two family music albums to his name, including the new, aptly titled Seconds. We caught up with Tatar last year at the end of the school day (he’s a music teacher in Long Grove) to talk about his music and his memories of Highland Park. The Chicago area has a long history of producing family music artists, from Ella Jenkins to Ralph Covert (of Ralph’s World). Are you finding a supportive community among other family music creators locally, as well as nationally? That's a great first question. I've always found that to be the case with this music genre. The environment and the community are so supportive. I definitely think that's one of the strengths of that style, and especially in the Chicago area. If we're talking about kids’ music, and giving them that friendly open invitation type of foundation, why not have a supportive atmosphere around it? I remember, before my

first album came out, more or less making a cold call to Ralph, because he was a big reason for why I got into this genre of music in the first place. Seeing his band performing at Kidzapalooza at Lolla eight, nine years ago, something like that. He invited me over to his studio and I played him some of my music. He was so generous and supporting, giving of his time, giving me some feedback. It's a good atmosphere to be a part of, for sure.
In addition to Covert, would you consider Jenkins to be a musical influence, and are there other family music performers that you look to as muses? Absolutely! I grew up with Ella Jenkins’ music when I was in kindergarten ... first and second grade. That was some of the first music I have a memory of being exposed to. I know, as a Wiggleworms instructor at the Old Town School of Folk Music, she’s celebrated there, constantly. I Continued on PG 6

INSPECTION ISSUES?
No home is perfect. That’s why home inspections are a necessary part of the home-buying process. Interestingly, the inspection process can be as nerve-racking for the buyer as it is for the seller. This is where I come in; I help all of the parties associated with the deal understand this part of the process, the issues and possible resolutions for a smooth transaction from contract to close. My assistance does not end when the Contract is signed. You can trust me to handle these communications efficiently and to do the homework necessary for a rewarding homebuying and home-selling experience.

NEWS SECONDS TO NONE
From PG 1
always keep her in mind, for sure, even if my music maybe doesn’t sound like hers, it came from what she's done. I’m also fond of Justin Roberts. I don't always travel in the same clown car as Justin, but I would pick his brain, ask for his advice or ask for his ear with something, and he would always be friendly and give me some time. You are a music teacher in Long Grove. Did you have a music teacher when you were in grade school, middle school or high school that you would call an inspiration when it came to pursuing a music-oriented career? I was blessed with some really great teachers in public school, great music teachers especially. At Elm Place School, I had Brayer Teague, who’s now an arts administrator in Downers Grove. He was my beginning band teacher, where I started playing trombone in fifth grade. Then I was passed on to Glenn Williams at Highland Park High School. I can't really articulate the impact that those two teachers had on me as a person, helping me to discover talents, to discover that I have something to build off of, giving me the confidence, giving me some leadership opportunities to grow my skill set. Absolutely incredible teachers that I had. Are your students aware that their music teacher is also a recording and performing artist? They are! I would be pretty hard for me to conceal it, but yeah, they are. Last year, a little bit, and this year, too, I was going to make some of my songs parts of their lessons. On one hand, I think, my older grades, my fifth graders, would be really curious to see what happens when you take music and you put it online. What happens if you put it on a streaming service, and how you can tell who's listening to it, where they are, and how old they are. Some of the metrics. I think they’d be really interested in that. Then the music itself can sometimes be used for lessons. There's one that acts as a freeze-dance. There’s one which is a G Blues and there's two open choruses where you, at home or at school or wherever you are, can grab an instrument and do a solo along with the band. I try to make it also interactive. I don't know if I'm the type who just wants to stand in front of my students and talk about me and my band. I’d rather have it with more of a purpose other than just talking about myself. They’re eager to hear it. I'm not always as eager to play it, but I definitely have made it a part of the class, and they’re well aware. You’re a father of two. Are either or both of your children old enough to play an instrument, and if so, do they play, and what instruments? Little Everleigh is 2. She’ll probably be the lead singer. She already sings a lot. She hasn't been up on stage yet, but she definitely has a good musical mindset. As she’s singing her songs that we sing at night together, the ABC’s and “Baa Baa Black sheep,” I guess she’s used to me commending her singing in the middle. So, as she’s singing, sometimes she will sing my comments to her as well like it's part of the song. “Next time won’t you sing with me … good singing.” She’s got it embedded, she’s on her way. Cameron is 6, a first grader. Since he was 2, he’s had a remarkable, steady beat. He’s able to match pitch beautifully. I’m not at the point yet where I want to throw an instrument in his lap and tell him the right and wrong way to play. I’m sort of happy with him

enjoying the wonder of music. At some point, when he's ready to take up an instrument, his talent that is waiting there for him to unfold. With your cleverly named band, the Tatar Tots, you have just released your second album, the food-themed record Seconds. What can you tell the readers about your songwriting process? I guess the reason that it became about food, for one thing, is at least in the classroom I teach
The LowDown Brass Band, who perform on that song. We were soaking up the New Orleans spirits and we went out for great food. That's how that song was born. I'm glad that some people can make the Hank connection, but other than that, I think it stands pretty well on its own. It does! You ask the musical question “Can You Write a Song About Broccoli?” and then answer it with the song of the same. Was it as easy

first through fifth-grade general music. I felt like a lot of times if I was talking about basic rhythms, whenever I would go through them, I would always just sing or clap through examples that used food. “Taco cheese/taco cheese.” It was always something funny that would stick with the kids and then just led easily to writing a song about food. For me, the challenge has been to make these food songs sound different. If someone has a song about pizza, a song about cotton candy, a song about a buffet, you wonder how different can all these songs be. It's not just about praising the food but taking the idea and moving it a step further. For example, the song “Back To The Buffet” is not just simply about a buffet, but it tells the story of somebody who goes to a buffet and, for whatever reason, they're not able to enjoy the buffet. They can’t find a place to sit. Yes! I take a more literary angle to songwriting. I like some of the songs to serve as stories. Some of the songs act as movement exercises. I like to think of how I can incorporate movement. For kids’ music, it's good to have songs based on movement and energy, to be interactive. The album opens with “Jambalaya,” a song that shares its name with the similarly titled Hank Williams classic “Jambalaya (On the Bayou).” For sure, oh, yeah! Were you at all concerned about that? I really wasn't. I wasn't too sure how many listeners might be familiar with that song. I love Hank Williams, but when I started writing it, I had no connection to that song at all. “Jambalaya” was actually the start of the album. I took a trip maybe about four or five years ago to New Orleans for a jazz conference. I was there with this group
fortunate to have two well-organized teachers who knew what they were doing, knew how to sequence information, and help grow kids’ interests and abilities in music. I have always appreciated that it's a creative community outside of school. Walking through downtown or uptown Highland Park, drawing in from the energy of the buildings and the people and decorating and the way that the town shows up for events. Ravinia bringing in tons of great artistry and now for a longer season, which is awesome. I think there are a lot of lot of muses in that town that I probably didn't recognize growing up as much as I can appreciate now. You and your family currently live in Northbrook which is still in the same general vicinity. Are there Highland Park spots that you return to on a regular basis that you’d like to share with the readers? Of course, my parents’ house. I still go there plenty. We didn’t get to Ravinia (last time) but we always like to try to get there. I did a show (last year) in Jens Jensen Park which is in the Ravinia area, near the train station. A friend of mine, Noah Plotkin, has set up this incredible festival schedule there, I think starting in May or June. Every Thursday there's a whole fleet of food trucks that come out there. They have two different bands that perform. A ton of people and a bunch of other stands and great atmosphere there, lots of energy. I’ve played there a couple of summers now. I love the Chicago Botanic Gardens. I've had the honor to work there and it's also fun to just go there and enjoy that area. I love going to Rosewood Beach, especially as a Northbrook resident where we don't have a beach. I have a much greater appreciation for my parents being Highland Park/Lake County taxpayers.
and effortless to do as you make it sound? Was easy and effortless to write that song? If I'm remembering correctly that song maybe took a little bit longer to write than the other ones. I don't know if I ever look at them as being difficult to write, but I try to embrace some of the patience For more information about Ben Tatar, visit involved in writing. BEAUTY 101 JEN BOBAY STEPS OUT FROM BEHIND HER MAKEUP BRAND TO TEACH WOMEN OF ALL AGES THE SECRETS TO TRUE BEAUTY IN THE NEW YEAR. BY ANN MARIE SCHEIDLER THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
The North Shore’s Jen Bobay has always had a connection to the beauty world, first through her grandmother who was a hairdresser in the city and then as a teacher who applied her love of science to ingredient combinations that she learned helped her skin. “I fell in love with makeup and skin care and was trained by a line that I loved and believed in,” Bobay remembers. “But nearly every product I tried irritated my skin.” It wasn’t until after Bobay gave birth to her son Nicholas and was looking for an opportunity where she could work and still make him a priority that she decided to create her own mindful line of makeup. Bobay founded Jar Bar Makeup, a complete mineral makeup line that is free of parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, and talc. “When I first decided to launch my company, I thought my business would be more education about makeup application—teaching my friends and their daughters how to use makeup and what was in their products,” she explains. “It was somewhat of an accident that we ended up marketing the makeup itself.” Like any new business owner, Bobay found “shiny pennies” everywhere she looked, opportunities that sounded good on paper but maybe didn’t make sense for where she was at the moment. “Many friends and clients wanted Jar Bar to offer more products and initially I wanted to please and would try and be everything to everyone,” she says. “Around year two, I knew that I needed to refocus. It was time to take a step back and get some advice.” Bobay’s cousin encouraged her to join an entrepreneurial club and she came across a newly formed one at The Lake Forest Shop. “The day I went to my first meeting was a moment in time,” she says. “When I met Ellen Stirling, I found a wonderful mentor that taught me the art of balance between running a business and maintaining your priorities for your clients and your family.” Bobay began by introducing her products through a series of trunk shows and learned that a glow palette she carried was a hit. “We don’t carry my entire line at The Lake Forest Shop. We’ve customized what we offer to clients of The Lake Forest Shop,” says Bobay. Bobay credits much of her success to the collaborative network of women in her corner. “Ellen Stirling has been an incredible role model to me,” she adds. “And along the way, my mother, husband, son, and several friends have stepped in and helped me with many things from campaigns to photographs for my website. Working with others has been my favorite part of creating Jar Bar. My grandmother used to listen to women share their problems when she would be styling them. And when they would ask for advice, she

lifted people up with the art of beauty. There is something therapeutic beneath the surface of the beauty industry. The hardest days won’t be cured by a great lipstick, but they sure can be made better.” Bobay believes today that her calling is bigger than selling makeup. So, she’s tapping into her science teacher toolbox to teach women of all ages the meditative powers of a good beauty regimen. Jar Bar will always be a part of Bobay, but educating clients on how to be their own makeup artist now will be the focus of her one-on-one sessions at the Lake Forest Shop. “I’ve really gone back to where I started with Jar Bar and it’s been in the last 18 months of dealing with Covid and its repercussions that have helped me get there,” she says. Bobay, who is an educator by nature, has been teaching since 1995 and most recently had the joy of teaching at both the School of St. Mary in Lake Forest and St. Francis Xavier in Wilmette. “I love being a teacher,” she says. “There is something about building up others through what you teach them that is so rewarding. I see it every day with my classroom of students and the teachers I work alongside with. Now I want to be able to create this same type of change and empower women through what I know about makeup and beauty.” Bobay believes that makeup and skin care—regardless of the brand you use—can be a meditative ritual. To this end, she shares 10 ideas for you
to add to your beauty routine in 2022. 1. Use a gentle non-foaming cleanser as soon as you wake up and before you go to bed at night. This will change your skin over time for the better. 2. When you cleanse your skin at night, use a clean washcloth to help exfoliate your skin. Always use a fresh washcloth. (Expert tip: The cheap washcloths that aren’t super plush are the best for this.) 3. If you are concerned about blocking pores, the best foundation is a loose mineral powder. If you apply it with a plush kabuki brush, it goes on flawlessly. Jar Bar’s loose powders offer buildable coverage that let the skin breathe. 4. Always use a little under-eye concealer with your foundation. 5. If you look tired, use an eye primer all over your lid to instantly brighten any shadows, darkness, or veins. Many women who feel their eyes look tired are amazed at what an eye primer can do. 6. Use a powder blush and a cream blush for staying power and glow. Jar Bar’s Cheek and Lip Tints were inspired by Bobay’s grandmother who always wore a cream blush. 7. The eyes require a few brushes to finish properly—an all over shadow brush, a tiny plush brush to soften any liner, and a brow brush. 8. Fill your brows with a natural brow gel. Brows frame the face. 9. The perfect lip shade is always two colors mixed together that create your natural lip color

just two shades darker. 10. Finish your look with a touch of lip gloss in the center of your bottom lip.
The hardest days won’t be cured by a great lipstick, but they sure can be made better.
“Beauty routines are important as long as they support you in being the best version of yourself,” Bobay says. “Little changes can lead to big rewards. I especially love starting habits like these at the beginning of a new year.” To learn more about Bobay and her brand Jar Bar Makeup, visit jarbarmakeup.com. Additionally, you can visit Bobay by appointment at The Lake Forest Shop, thelakeforestshop.com. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

NORTH SHORE FOODIE
FRESH OYSTERS WITH MIGNONETTE GRANITA BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Consider the oyster. That food writer extraordinaire M.F.K. Fisher devoted a book of this title to bivalve mollusks speaks to their undying appeal. Published in 1941, the book, full of Fisher’s wit, wisdom, and recipes, devotes an entire chapter to oysters’ reputation as an aphrodisiac. An astounding number of men, she says, “can tell of countless chaps whose powers have been increased nigh unto the billy goat’s, simply from eating raw cold oysters.” Alas, she continues, such claims are “fond but false hopes.” Nonetheless, oysters’ sensual appeal cannot be denied. Tipping the pearly shell of a perfectly fresh, sea-plucked oyster to one’s lips to slip the chilled contents down the hatch, has been a special kind of ambrosia for thousands of years. Eaten fresh, raw oysters need little adornment. Aphrodisiac or not, we’ve paired them with a Valentine’s pinking of frozen mignonette granita—a simple shaved ice made with a little red wine vinegar, peppercorns, salt, and a pinch of sugar. For health safety, be sure to purchase oysters very fresh from a reliable source, looking for intact shells and no suspicious odors. Keep the oysters very cold and consume them within a day or two of purchase. When shucking, use clean tools and dedicated cutting boards not shared by other ready-toeat foods. Return container to freezer and repeat the shaving process until you have a mound of frozen mignonette granita. Keep frozen while you shuck oysters. with your left hand. With your right hand and an oyster shucking tool, pierce into the joint at the back of the mollusk and twist to pry open shell. Place the ½ oyster shell containing the oyster on a serving platter filled with crushed ice. Repeat with remaining oysters. Spoon a mound of the frozen mignonette onto each oyster. Sprinkle platter with fresh thyme. Serve. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

ACE ADVOCATE PASSIONATE NSHORE PATIENT ADVOCATE’S FOUNDER AND FORMER ICU NURSE TERI DREHER IS THRIVING AS A HEALTH CARE SYSTEM NAVIGATOR. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
Teri Dreher has an airtight excuse for not remembering exactly how many times she and her family moved before her 18th birthday. The number, after all, is somewhere north of 30. “Around 37 times,” says the 60-something Dreher, a daughter of the late Dick Frykenberg, a U.S. Marine for 20 years. “I was good at making friends. I had to be, because I moved every three or four months.” Now a Libertyville resident and the founder of NShore Patient Advocates—which serves patients in Lake, Cook, DuPage, Kane, and McHenry counties—Dreher, still friendly and engaging, loves to share moving stories. But they have nothing to do with U-Hauls and everything to do with her clients. Dreher represents patients’ interests in discussions with hospitals, doctors, nursing facilities, and insurance companies. One of her recent patients had sustained a nasty fracture and found herself in a nastier nursing home. “She’s a delightful, classy, lovely, educated woman,” Dreher begins. “The nursing home wasn’t a high-quality one. A doctor yelled at her, and the nursing care there was horrible. They treated her like pond scum. I worked on the case for about a week and found her an assisted living place in Oak Park. The place took care of all of her needs. “She was so happy,” adds Dreher, a critical care nurse for 30-plus years before the launch of NShore Patient Advocates in 2011. “Her first night in Oak Park, she woke up three times and cried (happy teardrops). She thanked me three times the next day. As a nurse patient advocate, I’m a voice for the oppressed; I rescue patients. I’m part nurse, part lawyer, part guard dog.” Disenchantment with the health care system triggered Dreher’s decision to leave nursing and pursue patient advocacy more than 10 years ago. Senior orphans—elderly people without family support—falling through the cracks of the system dismayed her. “Modern health care was changing for the worse, becoming more and more fractured and leading to medical errors and miscommunication,” Dreher says. “Nurses and doctors were frustrated and overwhelmed. I didn’t feel right, in my heart, to continue as a nurse. But what I knew then, and what’s true today, is that patient advocacy is at the heart of quality nursing. “Starting NShore Patient Advocates,” she adds, “was the best career decision I’ve ever made.” Dreher—author of the book Patient Advocacy Matters: The Ultimate How-To Guide to Protect Your Health, Your Rights, Your Life and Your Loved Ones in Today’s Era of Modern Healthcare

(2016)—also founded Seniors Alone Guardianship & Advocacy Services (SAGAS) in 2019. Its mission is to provide advocacy services for senior citizens and adults with disabilities who don’t have the means or capabilities to arrange their own care. “Right now, patient advocates can be counted in the hundreds, not the thousands,” says Dreher, who created an online training program, Nurse Advocate Entrepreneur, targeted to nurses and social workers who want to help people more directly than the system allows. “There is more demand from patients than the industry can meet. Staffing shortages, especially in nursing, and Covid-related challenges have contributed to the erosion of quality in healthcare. “What I’ve noticed in too many ERs is how little time doctors spend with patients. Too often they’re in and out of the room in less than a minute. I’m there to speak up for my patients, to point something out to a doctor in some cases. Our advocates at NShore strive to take the fear and frustration out of navigating modern healthcare.” A fearless Dreher marched into her junior high school’s principal office when she wanted to play tennis for a school that fielded only a boys tennis team. “I told the principal, ‘This isn’t fair,’ ” Dreher recounts. The principal listened. The tennis team became a co-ed team in no time, with Dreher serving as the squad’s lone female. Several family moves later, Dreher enrolled at Tantasqua High School in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, and eventually ran for Student Council president in her senior year. “Vote for Teri” lollipops blew away the campaign posters created by the other candidates. Dreher won in a landslide. “I was kind of shocked,” she says. A sweeter feat would come later. Dreher earned the school’s prestigious Leadership Award in 1973. The previous honorees? All males. “I had a can-do attitude,”
says Dreher, the oldest of Dick and Phyllis’s nine children. “I also believed in myself. My father was a charismatic speaker, an inspiring man, a loving father. He valued leadership. “I’ll never forget what he did after I received the award in our school’s auditorium. He stood up and clapped—for three to four minutes.”

As a nurse patient advocate, I’m a voice for the oppressed; I rescue patients. I’m part nurse, part lawyer, part guard dog.
Dreher attended the Massachusetts School of Nursing in Worcester and paid for the three-year program by working weekends as a nurse’s aide. In the late 1970s she moved to Chicago, where she worked as a nurse at the University of Illinois Medical Center. “Those were exciting times,” Dreher recalls. “I worked rounds with famous doctors.” She moved to Denver with her first husband and continued her career as an ICU nurse. They raised children Charles and Kelton. Teri and her second husband, retired IT professional Dean Dreher, have a daughter, 28-year-old Emma. “ICU nurses,” Teri says, “are highly respected by doctors because, in addition to their knowledge and skills, they provide emotional and spiritual care for patients. I had always wanted to be a nurse. But patient advocacy is in my heart now, fully; it’s my purpose in life.” The Alliance of Professional Health Advocates awarded Dreher its highest honor just a few years after NShore Patient Advocates held the trembling hand of its first client and didn’t let go until it had calmed down. “If 2020 has taught us anything,” Dreher says, “it’s that if you don’t have a doctor or a nurse in your family, you need someone to advocate for you.”
