DESIGN DUO MARGOT SCOTT DESIGN BRINGS THE TALENTS OF TWO LAKE FOREST DESIGNERS TOGETHER FOR A LINE OF LOCALLY SOURCED, BESPOKE FURNITURE. BY SHERRY THOMAS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

It’s a busy pre-pandemic Friday morning at Tala Coffee shop in Highwood. Jessica Margot (Federighi) sips a foamy green matcha chai while her business partner Elizabeth Scott enjoys a latte. They are polished and poised and ready to talk about their eponymous Margot Scott Design furniture brand, but there’s also a more intimate sisterhood vibe that might make you think these two Lake Forest designers have known each other for decades. “Should we tell her how we met?” Margot asks, smiling at her partner. The answer was “sure,” as if they were about to let us in on an inside secret—unfolding the story sentence by sentence, each one of them chiming in unison. Both are formally trained interior designers and both formed their own firms around 2004. Scott, who grew up all over the country, moved to Lake Forest to raise her daughters—Isabelle Lisk and Aurelia Lisk—16 years ago. Margot, a North Shore native, lived in downtown Chicago with husband Dante Federighi until about 8 years ago, when she also moved to Lake Forest to raise her two children— Continued on PG 10

Dante, Jr. and Luca. And even though they happened to live in the same Lake Forest neighborhood, it was a member-based organization called Designer Collaborative in Chicago that finally brought these two entrepreneurs together. “I had an event at the Merchandise Mart a few years ago and a colleague said ‘you should come and check out this group ... there’s someone from Lake Forest’,” Scott recalls. “We met at one of the subsequent meetings and realized we lived right up the street from each other.” It was kismet. “We both love the same things, we eat healthy, we work out,” says Scott. “Sometimes we even finish each other’s sentences, which is rare to find!” As interior designers, they each kept their own roster of long-standing North Shore clients but a friendship blossomed immediately. One day, Scott says she was showing Margot some one-of-a-kind products she was sourcing for a design project and the idea to join creative forces. “I was working on a rug collection,” she explains. “Jessica came to me and said “I want to do that with you ... and create a line of tables’.” And just like that, in 2018, Margot Scott was born. “We know what the market is missing and what we need for our clients,” says Margot. The concept is genius. The two designers take commissions from their individual clients for bespoke solid wood furniture pieces in Walnut and European Oak, and then have their Chicago area craftspeople to bring the design to life. “They hire us because they want something that no one else has,” says Scott. “They want a high-end piece that’s locally sourced, and at a fraction of the cost of some other bespoke furniture lines.” Margot continues, adding: “My clients aren’t always interested in spending $14,000 on a coffee table. We want to provide that custom look and quality, but now they might say, ‘I’m not going to just get a coffee table ... I’ll get a few other pieces to go with it’.” “We know when we design that we are creating timeless pieces made with impeccable details, using beautiful solid wood material that can be taken from one home to the next. And that’s what we will always design,” Scott adds. “They can mix and match and that’s our whole goal, to create a piece you’re going to have for 20 years.” Pieces in the Margot Scott line aim to evoke timeless sophistication and elegance while also providing function and durability. Just about two years into the endeavor, they could not be more thrilled with the feedback so far and how quickly demand has grown. “Both of us are very Type A doers. We get stuff done. We’re juggling a lot but we empower each other so we get things done even faster together, like a well-oiled machine,” says Margot. “We’re also very grateful that it’s happening at a faster pace than we realized.’ Continued on PG 12

While a brick-and-mortar storefront is not part of the business plan anytime soon, having their pieces showcased at luxury design showrooms and other high-profile venues around the country is. Margot Scott pieces recently became available nationally

at CIA through the Chicago Merchandise Mart. The design duo also plans to introduce a new veneer line within the next few months. “Design is a changing world,” says Margot. “I love what I do more today than I did 15 to 20 years ago. The furniture is an

extension of what we’ve always been doing. We’re just riding the

wave at this point and very excited about what’s to come for Margot Scott.” As Scott chimes in, “We’re driven and know where we want to grow our business.” And then at some point in this frenetic storytelling, they stop, look at each other, and smile. “Jessica and I are almost like sisters,” says Scott, finishing her chai. “I don’t think that comes twice in a lifetime. We are very lucky.” Margot Scott Design is building a national reputation with its locally sourced, bespoke solid wood furniture.

HE WRITES! HE SCORES! NORTH SHORE NATIVE AND HOCKEY DAD RICH COHEN SHARES MORE THAN A HAT TRICK OF CONFESSIONS IN HIS HIGHLY ENTERTAINING NEW BOOK. BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Euphoria lifted Rich Cohen to cirruscloud heights when his beloved Chicago Bears thumped the New England Patriots 46-10 in the Super Bowl nearly 35 years ago. Nothing in a sports setting—not even the Chicago Cubs winning a World Series championship for the first time in 108 years—would top that feeling

Author Rich Cohen with his son, Micah, at their favorite place, the hockey rink. for the author and lifelong Chicago sports fan until late 2018, when his son Micah, then 11 years old, scored a hockey goal for the Pee Wee A Ridgefield (Connecticut) Bears. “It’s incredibly satisfying, watching something like that,” says the 52-year-old Cohen, who was born in Lake Forest and grew up in Glencoe. “Better than that ’85 Bears team, better than that Cubs team in 2016. I’d gone through so many ups and downs with Cubs teams through the years; the title in 2016 was more of a relief than anything else, because those tough years had made me feel like a broken person. Someone sent me a video of a goal scored by my son. Micah scored it following a

NEWS face-off. He took three strides and blasted a shot to a top corner. Then he celebrated on the ice. So cool. I watched the video 500 times. “Okay, I’m exaggerating.” But only slightly, probably. Cohen is part highly engaged parent and part rabid Micah Cohen fan in his latest book, Pee Wees: Confessions of a Hockey Parent (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 222 pages, set for release in January 2021). He essentially invites readers to find room in his hockey-gearladen vehicle and takes them on a season-long ride that starts in August 2018 and ends in April 2019. The Pee Wee A Ridgefield Bears club features 15 11- and 12-year-old boys and girls. Micah, a left wing, skates across rinks as a 4-foot-8, 81-pounder. Rich, the father, endures a parent’s three stages of tryout grief—“Denial, anger, and acceptance,” he lists—and savors Ridgefield Bears victories, particularly the one in late 2018 that clinched the gold medal at the Can/Am Tournament in Lake Placid, New York. “My son and I experienced the highest highs and lowest lows of our lives together,” writes Cohen, also the father of sons Aaron, 16, Nate, 15, and Elia, 5, and a Ridgefield resident for about 10 years. He dedicated the book to his wife, Jessica, praising her for serving as a resourceful guide throughout an interminable hockey endeavor, “with its early mornings, ramshackle rinks, f rozen weekends, road travel, injuries, f reak-outs, panics, pleasures, and moments of self-love and self-loathing.” Cohen opted to write Pee Wees because it’s a subject he cares about deeply. He began wielding a hockey stick for a North Shore powerhouse Squirt squad in the mid-1970s, a few years after his brother had taught him how to skate at a rink dubbed the Deerfield Bubble. Cohen would discover that a hockey parent in 2018 wasn’t anything like a hockey parent when bell-bottoms were must-wear jeans. “It was a most vivid experience, Micah’s hockey season f rom start to finish,” says Cohen, a New Trier High school graduate who considRich Cohen ers Deerfield Falcons youth hockey coach Jim Freeberg one of the best teachers he’d ever had. “And it provided good material. It’s like a photographer looking at something and thinking, ‘That would be a cool subject for a picture.’ Parents now are super, super involved, to the point where being a hockey parent is a big part of their social life. My parents, when I played hockey, basically dropped me off and after games they’d ask me three THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

questions: ‘How’d you do?’ ‘Did you have fun?’ and, ‘What did the coach say?’ That was it.” Cohen—also a contributing editor at Vanity Fair and Rolling Stone and the author of more than a dozen books, including Monsters: The 1985 Chicago Bears and the Wild Heart of Football (2013) and Lake Effect (2002), a memoir about growing up in Glencoe and his years at Tulane Univer-

after a shove f rom an opponent during the 2018-19 season, prompting an ingame baseline test to determine if he had incurred a concussion. Rich Cohen vacates his spot in the bleachers to check on the status of his favorite Pee Wee wing. “Micah failed the concussion test,” a coach informs the author near the team’s bench in the chapter “October.” “What’s the concussion test?” Rich

sity—is the only professional writer among parents of the Pee Wee A Ridgefield Bears in the 2018-2019 season. “It made me an oddball,” he writes. “When you tell people you’re a writer, they assume you’re unemployed. When they find out you actually earn a living, they chuck you on the shoulder and say, ‘Terrific!’ ” Micah Cohen’s head hits the ice hard

Cohen asks. “We ask questions, things they should know,” the coach replies. “He couldn’t answer any of them.” “What’d you ask him?” “I asked him your wife’s mother’s maiden name. He couldn’t tell me.” “I couldn’t tell you,” Micah’s father shoots back. “What else?”

“We didn’t have a first date. We met at a Super Bowl party.” Micah, a top-line winger before the injury, ends up missing two weeks of action and then finds out he’d been demoted to the third line. The coach’s decision angers Rich Cohen. “It violated a philosophical tenet of every team f rom Mites to the pros: you don’t lose your position because of an injury,” Cohen writes. But Micah isn’t angry. Nobody had taken his uniform or his stick or his skates. He’d still get to play the sport he adores with his f riends. And his love for the game had never dipped below inferno intensity during the downtime. “Micah,” Cohen says, “was the opposite of me that season. The level of team, his line, the number of shifts he played in games—none of that mattered to my son. None of it matters to him today. Micah just loves hockey. Loves it. Isn’t that the most important thing? The tendency of an athlete’s parent is to want to fix everything. But it ’s important to let it go, to let your kid simply play and have fun. “In the end, the best part of that season with the Ridgefield Bears was how much time I got to spend with Micah. That was such a great thing.” Maybe even better than watching good ol’ No. 45—Micah’s jersey number—fire a puck past a goaltender.

NORTH SHORE FOODIE

SPICED LAMB SHEPHERD’S PIE

RECIPE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS One of my boys loves lamb, and this one-dish classic casserole—layering sautéed garden vegetables and gratineed whipped potatoes over the meat, is the perfect comfort dish to showcase ground lamb. We've spiced it with cumin, mint, Kashmiri chili powder, smoked paprika, coriander, and cinnamon. The dish works well with ground beef, too. Versions of shepherd’s pie featuring beef or mutton topped with a potato crust started appearing under the name “cottage pie” in 1791 Britain. By 1854, it became more widely known as shepherd’s pie. The French were making similar “pies” in 1900 under the moniker hachis (for finely chopped) Parmentier (for Antoine-Augustin Parmentier, a big promoter of potatoes in France through the 18th century.) But whatever you choose to call it—this shepherd’s pie is truly delicious! To make the dish’s three layers, you will simmer potatoes and then whip them for the top layer, brown the ground meat (lamb or beef ) with garlic, onion, and the medley of spices for the bottom layer, and sauté carrot, more onion, celery, and tomato paste for the middle layer. I use a pastry bag to pipe the whipped potato over the layered meat and veggies. Then, sprinkled with a little parmesan and paprika, and popped in the oven for a few minutes to brown the crust, the dish is ready to serve. A little bonus tip: If you don’t have a can of tomato paste in the house, you can make your own tomato paste using sun-dried tomatoes! Just pulse the tomatoes in a food processor with a few tablespoons of water to create a nice paste. I actually prefer the flavor of this “homemade” version over canned.

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

1-1/2 pounds ground lamb or beef 4 slices nitrate-free bacon, chopped 3 fat garlic cloves, minced to make 2 Tbsp 1 large white onion, divided, and diced small 2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp smoked paprika 1/4 tsp Kashmiri chili powder OR cayenne pepper 1 small bunch fresh mint, minced to make 1 Tbsp 1 tsp ground coriander 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp salt A few grinds of black pepper 3 carrots, peeled and diced 2 stalks of celery, diced small 1/2 cup tomato paste 3 pounds of potatoes (I used small yellow) peeled, and sliced into quarters 2 Tbsp finely grated parmesan cheese 1 tsp paprika

In a heavy skillet over medium heat, brown lamb/or beef with bacon, 1/2 of the large chopped onion, and the garlic. Add cumin, paprika, cayenne pepper, minced mint, coriander, cinnamon, salt and pepper. Stir and taste to adjust seasonings.

| SATURDAY JANUARY 30 | SUNDAY JANUARY 31 2021

In a second skillet over medium heat, sauté the other half of the chopped onion with the chopped carrot and celery. After browning for five minutes, add 1/2 cup of water, add 1/2 cup of tomato paste, stir and cover. Reduce heat to low and simmer until softened.

In a large kettle, cover the peeled and sliced potatoes with water. Heat to just below boiling and simmer for 12 to 15 minutes until potatoes are cooked through, but not overcooked. Dump potatoes into a strainer. In the stand bowl of a mixer with the whisk attachment, whip potatoes with 1/4 cup of butter until light and fluffy. Transfer potatoes to a pastry piping bag. In an oval oven-proof casserole dish, layer the meat mixture on the bottom and top with the cooked vegetable medley. Pipe the potatoes over the top. Preheat oven to 400. Sprinkle the potatoes with parmesan cheese and paprika. Heat in oven for five to 10 minutes until cheese and piped potatoes have browned a bit. Serve immediately.

A JOURNEY TO WELLNESS DENA DODD PERRY PAVES A MINDFUL PATH TO HEALTH AND HEALING. BY ROCHELLE NEWMAN RUBINOFF ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

You would be hard pressed to find someone who embodies all things health and wellness more than Lake Forest’s Dena Dodd Perry. Describing herself as a healthy lifestyle engineer, Perry works as both an integrative health coach and a certified yoga instructor. Over the years, she has incorporated her wealth of knowledge in a variety of ways, most recently becoming the author of the newly released Detoxelicious, a ten-day powerful yet practical self-help book providing guidance for detoxing. While this multi-tasking woman has now devoted her life to helping others on their food-fitness journey, she graduated Northwestern University with a degree in engineering. But she was always drawn to the sciences, which definitely comes into play now. Growing up as one of four children in Detroit, she majored in biology in high school. “That gave me a leg up when I got to Northwestern,” Perry says, especially when she began tutoring other students. “I’ve always been a huge STEM advocate.” The pride is obvious in Perry’s voice when she shares that many of those students are now doctors themselves. “I thought about med school,” Perry says, explaining that she was put off by it being cost prohibitive, and instead decided to become an engineer. That fortuitous choice led to Perry meeting her husband, Jeff, when they both worked in the management consulting industry. They have three children—two sons in college and one daughter in high school. Motivated to find solutions to some of her personal health challenges, Perry is now able to help lead others on their own wellness journey. Perry has always been physically active; she golfs, plays paddle tennis, and runs. And during one of those activities, most likely running, she ended up getting a fragment stuck between her L4-L5 vertebrae, which was excruciatingly painful, causing severe sciatica. Perry shares that when she saw neurosurgeon Dr. Jonathan Citow, “He said ‘I can definitely fix this. You should be able to return back to your all your normal activities. Just don’t repetitively lift anything over 45 pounds for the rest of your life.’ So basically, that’s life changing, right? But during the exit interview he said, ‘You know, as long as you keep stretching and watch your weight, you should do well.’ And I said, What about yoga? He said yoga would be great.” This began Perry’s yoga career. “I’ve been teaching for five years. I did 200 hours of yoga certification in addition to 300 more hours of advanced training, culminating in my yoga thesis.” Prior to the pandemic, Perry had many corporate yoga clients. She would go to various companies and teach classes. One of her longtime students is Tony Asghari, a principal mechanical engineer at Continental Automotive in Deer Park.

“Her classes are fantastic,” Asghari says. “She always comes prepared. Also, Dena is very athletic and brings athleticism to you in a calm, relaxed, consistent manner. She’s an energetic person and she is really well grounded.” Some of

Asghari’s favorite aspects of Perry’s classes were “the way she spoke, her intonation, her flow, her level of intensity, and her character, her jovial nature. I try never to miss a class.” Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Perry is unable to teach in person right now. She currently teaches virtually at vivaya.live. com.

“My account is @DenaDoddlife on Instagram Live, and there I try to emphasize that we are on this journey. You look and feel better based on both the food you are eating and your yoga fitness routine. I’m a big advocate of yoga fitness just because of the situation I was in. And I believe through healing my own body that my gift to the community is to share my journey to inspire them to heal their own bodies in whatever way or fashion they deem appropriate.” Yoga and exercise are just part of the equation. Perry is also committed to embracing a healthy diet. Several years ago she attended a workshop run by Dr. Vesna Skul, a functional medicine doctor based in Chicago. “My yoga business is important. But what I’m eating matters, too. I had already completed a cleanse from the blueprint cleanse, which is all liquid for two days, but found that I got severe headaches. And I would lose three or four pounds, but I didn’t like that side effect.” Perry prefers what Dr. Skul proposes—a vegan, organic plant-based plan for 10 days. This cleanse seeks cellular restoration and is highly potent in antioxidants. “So, in a sense, the book is a 10-day mindfulness, food, and fitness detox program where we encourage people to order the detox cleanse. That is supported by U.S. News & World Report. The process is called Recognize, Reset, and Realize. Recognize what is going on with your body. Get a check-up with your doctor. Then, you Reset. This is on page 32 of my book, and you reset by detoxing with support of supplements that have been tested. And then, you Realize results and evaluate your cholesterol, your blood pressure, and so on and so forth.” Dr. Skul says that she and Dena instantly clicked when they met. “She asked about what I think my patients should be doing. And that is taking charge of one’s own health and your family’s health by doing the best you can. We live in such a polluted environment, that rather than curling up in a fetal position and calling it a day… accepting the need for specifically targeted cellular detoxification through foods and supplements is what I have been advising my patients for decades.” Dr. Skul is thrilled with Perry’s book, Detoxelicious. “I think it speaks for itself. It is beautiful, well written, and easy to follow. I think that having it as a tool, and then having conversations either with a fitness lifestyle coach or a medical professional who can embellish and personalize, is very valuable.” “Even if you are addicted to fast food or a carnivore, you can be vegan for 10 days,” says Dr. Skul. “Especially when—usually by day four or so—the clarity comes, and you can see really noticeable and fantastic results from that kind of eating. Then you can reintroduce some clean animal protein into your lifestyle, while staying away from the clear culprits of what make up a lot of people’s diets and causes the most trouble health wise.” Looking back on her own journey, Perry says, “These things in life happened for a reason and I believe it took me on a more mindful approach. It took me on this path of open-mindedness with infinite possibilities, including food and fitness.” Learn more by visiting denadodd.com. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
