she experienced some burnout and decided to take a few years off to raise her young children. Then, as often happens in life, she— somewhat serendipitously—embarked on an entirely new career. “We were in the city for 23 years and we moved to Wilmette last year, which I love,” she says. “My brother lives in Florida and his neighbor puts together these candy boxes and he and my sisterin-law called

Like many of us, Susie Riskind Thompson was born with a healthy sweet tooth. When she was growing up in Highland Park, she would often go out to fine restaurants with her parents and grandparents and while the appetizers and entrees were top notch, it was the desserts that caught her attention. “I've always been obsessed with food, and I grew up in a real food family. I loved going out to eat,” she says. “We would really just celebrate as a family and eat together, and I always loved dessert, as every child does.” After attending the University of Arizona and working as a reporter for a time in Colorado, Riskind Thompson returned to Chicago to work for a public relations firm, “I'm kind of a people person and a friend of mine suggested I should try public relations, so I applied for a job, and I got it,” she says. “My first clients were Potbelly and Le Colonial, which is a restaurant in the city.” Having been “thrown” into restaurant PR, Riskind Thompson eventually opened her own firm representing some of the best restaurants in the city and on the North Shore, including Miramar in Highwood. Her largest client was the Shaw’s Crab House division of the Lettuce Entertain You Restaurant Group. But after 15 years and having two sons,

NEWS CANDY LAND

From PG 1

would be interesting to create colorful collections of gummies for special occasions. She wanted to spread a little happiness. “I started ordering different candy and kind of putting together these boxes just to practice. The family of a child in my son's class was very affected by COVID-19 and people started making meals for them,” she says. “I signed up to give them dinner and then I gave them my first box because I wanted them to smile, and I wanted to bring a little joy into their house.” Soon the business began to take off. Another mom asked her if she would make her daughter's birthday party favors. Then someone saw that and they wanted her to do a container for them. Then a larger birthday party, and another. “It really has just organically grown and I’m so busy and it's turned into a full-fledged business, almost all through social media,

through Instagram,” Riskind Thompson says. “That's really my main outlet and word-of-mouth and obviously being in the PR business I know a lot of people and they have been so supportive.” Susie’s Sugar Buzz offers a variety

of candy collections that are cleverly packaged and range in price from $7 to $90. There are tackle boxes, charcuterie boards, and what are called, “Road Trip Strips.” Many of her collections are personalized with individuals’ names, and most of her orders are customized. She sources her gummies from around the

country and Europe. “It's kind of like putting together pieces and making things look really cool and appealing and tasting great,” she says. “These are serous gummies. In the variety pack I go for different textures and tastes, sweet, sour, marshmallow.” Riskind Thompson says she has a ton of repeat customers, and over time they’ve honed their tastes and she can tailor her collections to suit them. “They might not like sours, or they only want red if they're doing a charcuterie board,” she says. “They want their college colors, or they want something really girly. I do custom all the time.” With so many colors to choose from, her collections are easily adaptable for holidays. Upcoming holidays—Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter—all offer opportunities for Riskind Thompson to display her creative flair. “I put everything together myself and I feel like it's taken over a lot of our house,” she says “There's officially a candy room in our house. My husband is very tolerant.” Then there’s the kids, and their growing network of friends who are learning that Wilmette has its own version of, well, Charlie and the Gummy Factory. The upside is that Riskind Thompson puts them to work as tastetesters. “My kids’ friends come over and they all want to check out the candy room. My kids have a three-piece limit a day and they'll taste test things for me and tell me if they like them,” she says. “I always ask them their opinion because they're honest and I feel like they've got good ideas.” For more visit susiessugarbuzz.com or follow @ susiessugarbuzz on Instagram.

DO-GOODER GLENCOE’S MICHELLE MCBRIDE FOUNDED GOODSPORT NUTRITION ON THE PRINCIPLE THAT GOODNESS IS WHAT MAKES TRUE GREATNESS POSSIBLE. BY ALLISON DUNCAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

GoodSport Nutrition founder Michelle McBride happens to have a background in law, not health and fitness as one might expect. She began her career as a trial attorney in Chicago before transitioning to a legal start-up and, later, to a non-profit focused on translational cancer research and then to Chicago Ideas. But when her son, one of her three children, started playing competitive baseball, she knew she had to find an alternative to the sugary, artificially sweetened sports drinks offered at nearly every game. So, she launched GoodSport, a natural milk-inspired sports drink with a goal of shaking up the saturated sports drink landscape and disrupting the dairy industry. “I had read about athletes who drank chocolate milk to recover and bought it for my son as a healthier alternative after his games and workouts,” says McBride. “It wasn’t the thirstquenching hydration solution we wanted, but it provided the inspiration to look at milk as a source of hydration during physical activity.” A first-of-its-kind natural sports drink, GoodSport has been scientifically proven to provide rapid and long-lasting hydration by harnessing the electrolytes and carbohydrates found in milk. With a clear, water-like consistency, it’s available in four flavors: lemon-lime, fruit punch, wild berry, and citrus. McBride and her team—including partner Andy Friedman, the founder and former CEO of SkinnyPop popcorn— spent nearly five years in research and development to crack the code on how to extract milk’s hydration benefits, eventually landing on an ultrafiltration process. The result? Three times the electrolytes and 33 percent less sugar than traditional sports drinks, plus no artificial flavors, sweeteners, or dyes. “Many people don’t know that milk is packed with electrolytes and that studies have shown milk is more hydrating than traditional sports drinks and water,” explains McBride. “When I learned that, I figured there had to be a way to harness the electrolytes, vitamins, and carbs from milk to make a natural sports drink.” Now, teams in the NFL, NBA, MLB, and WNBA, including recent WNBA champions the Chicago Sky, provide GoodSport for their athletes. GoodSport invests significantly in rigorous product testing, so athletes can trust it will help them perform better and stay healthy. Studies have shown that GoodSport provides rapid

and long-lasting hydration and also improves exercise performance. “We are an official hydrator of the Chicago Sky,” adds McBride. “I’m not going to lie, it was pretty special seeing Wintrust Stadium lit up with GoodSport graphics during the winning game of the WNBA finals. It was such an exciting time for the team and our city. It was thrilling to be a part of it.” However, McBride’s son is still the brand’s biggest fan. “Could you imagine if I went through all of this trouble and he didn’t want to drink it?” laughs McBride. “All three of my kids have been resident taste testers with every version, every tweak, every new flavor. If it doesn’t pass their test, it doesn’t go any further. My son drinks GoodSport every time he plays or works out. I caught him packing several bottles in his baseball bag the last time we flew out of town for a tournament, but I had already beat him to it.”

Also important to McBride and the GoodSport team is creating a more positive sports culture and supporting programs aimed at getting more people in the game. With that in mind, GoodSport has partnerships with national nonprofit organizations including Project Play, an organization that believes in the power of sport to build healthy children and communities, Dare2tri, one that removes the barriers to sports and fitness by serving individuals with physical disabilities and blindness, and RISE, a national nonprofit that harnesses the power of sports to eliminate racial discrimination in our country. Locally, GoodSport supports organizations including, C.H.A.M.P.S. Male Mentoring, and GoodSport hosted the first annual Born 2 Win tournament with Dr. Eric “ET” Thomas, a world-renowned motivational speaker, to promote violence prevention and mental health in the Englewood community. Sports participation, McBride says, helps foster life-long healthy habits, instills important life skills, helps bridge racial and gender divides, lowers teen drug use, increases high school graduation rates, and more. “There are many notable benefits that come from participating in sports and fitness, but a win-at-all-costs mentality and lack of accessibility are causing an alarming decrease in youth participation,” says McBride. “Being able to

| SATURDAY FEBRUARY 12 | SUNDAY FEBRUARY 13 2022

positively impact the sports community, both on a national and local level, is truly a highlight. We are a mission-driven brand and keep ‘good’ at the core of everything we do.” With that in mind, GoodSport is also committed to doing good for the planet through a sustainable supply chain. Instead of purchasing an abundance of milk and ultrafiltering it to extract what they need, GoodSport works with dairy processors who are already ultrafiltering milk and have no use for the part of the milk GoodSport uses. GoodSport then essentially rescues and upcycles this component of milk. The brand is already available in grocery and convenience stores throughout Chicago—including Jewel this spring—and in gyms, fitness centers, and on Amazon. “In sports, greatness implies a level of excellence few have achieved,” says McBride. “The word great is often tied to the winner, the highest point scorer, the most championship ringwearer. We define winning differently—to us it’s about the good inherent in sports and the life lessons learned from the experience. You can’t achieve true greatness unless you’ve built upon a foundation of goodness. Goodness is what makes true greatness possible, in sports and beyond.” For more information, visit goodsport.com. THE WEEKENDER

PUTTIN’ ON THE RITZ WITH A $100 MILLION MAKEOVER OF ITS FIVE-STAR SUITES, GUEST ROOMS, AND SPA COMPLETE, THE RITZ-CARLTON CHICAGO IS RECLAIMING ITS PLACE AS ONE OF THE CITY’S MOST LUXURIOUS PROPERTIES. WHETHER IT’S A ROMANTIC WEEKEND FOR TWO OR A DECADENT GIRLFRIEND’S GETAWAY, THIS ICONIC GOLD COAST HOTEL IS THE PERFECT PLACE FOR YOUR WINTER STAYCATION. BY SHERRY THOMAS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

February may be one of the shortest months of the year, but it can also be the cruelest. With endless gray skies and temps that can’t seem to climb above freezing, some “downtown” time may be just what you need to beat the winter blues. With that in mind, we recently checked out the newly renovated Ritz-Carlton Chicago hotel and spa at Water Tower Place—a $100 million makeover that has transformed the 1975 property’s sprawling suites and guest rooms. Let’s just say this isn’t your parents’ RitzChicago. With sleek lines and an identity reimagined by the award-winning, San Franciscobased design firm BAMO, the Mag Mile landmark is living up to the prestigious reputation set by its iconic namesake César Ritz in Paris more than a century ago. Whether you’re booking a last-minute romantic weekend retreat for Valentine’s Day or a spa-infused girlfriend’s getaway, consider this your guide to putting on the Ritz in Chicago.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Step off the elevator at the 12th floor and prepare to be impressed by phase one of BAMO’s transformation—a majestic lobby that pays homage to the city, its architecture, and the hotel’s coveted Mag Mile location. No detail was left untouched in its design, from using the same Calcutta marble from Water Tower’s façade inside to create towering columns that bring your eye toward the sky to the rows of 19-foot walnut fins that divide the space between the chic, new Torali dining “experience” on the left and a swanky Torali bar to the left. A floating sculpture of hand-blown glass near the ceiling completes the “wow” effect. Evoking the color and movement of Lake Michigan, the Flying Wave piece is a testament to Chicago’s modern architecture and industrial ingenuity. Don’t get too distracted though. The restaurant will come later. Here is where you check in. SUITE LIFE With 434 newly renovated, five-star suites

and guest rooms to choose from—some with stunning skyline views—there is no wrong choice. But if the sky’s the limit, treat yourself to one of the new modern luxe Ritz-Chicago suites. (P.S. - If you’ve ever dreamed of having a downtown pied-à-terre, this could be the next-best thing.) With two bedrooms and 1,500 square feet of living space, the Navy Pier Suite features

THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

LIFESTYLE & ARTS large picture windows with views of Lake Michigan, Navy Pier, and the Chicago Skyline; expansive living quarters; and two sumptuous marble bathrooms with Asprey bath essentials, including one with a soaking tub. The Lakeside Suite is the next largest with 1,000 square feet and a corner location with panoramic city and lake views. Like the Navy Pier Suite, it features a spacious living area with a wet bar and an intimate dining area. At 850 square feet, the Magnificent Mile Suite features skyline views and two marble bathrooms. The Gold Coast Suite has 800 square feet and one bathroom. Smaller suites include Water Tower Suite (with two luxury bathrooms) and Executive Suite (with corner views). The guest rooms also feature luxury baths and amenities that make you feel truly pampered. But the true indulgence comes next, after you check in to the new K’Alma luxury spa at the Ritz, where the outside world just melts away.

K’ALMA SPA

Even if you only have time for a day trip, a visit to Ritz-Carlton Spa Chicago by K’Alma is worth a train ride downtown. Drawing from the culture of Peru and the Q’ero spiritual healers, the K’Alma experts nourish your body with their ancient knowledge and rich healing practices. The intimate spa renews mind and body with four treatment rooms, one couples’ suite, nail suite, sauna, and a steam room. Treatments, including facials and massages, are designed to help you heal and relax. Even an hour-long massage will leave you

feeling refreshed and grounded for the year ahead but given that this is a staycation, we suggest you make a day of it. Signature treatments include an 80-minute couples massage with an all-natural blend of

essential oils, plant extracts, and other ingredients; a peppermint pedicure paired with a foot and leg massage; and a high-powered facial treatment to tighten and renew the skin. While you are there, take advantage of the

expanded fitness center and pool. Soon, it will be time for dinner.

FIVE-STAR DINING

Back on the 12th floor, you have dinner reservations at the Ritz’s new concept Italian steakhouse, Torali, but first we recommend an aperitif at the copper clad Torali Bar. Overlooking the city skyline, Torali offers a modern steakhouse vibe with an Italian touch. Traditional antipasti and handmade pastas are featured along with prime and dry-aged meats. In warmer weather, the restaurant and bar open to a spectacular rooftop deck (which means you’ll need to come back). The menu is decidedly contemporary with an elevated, local take on Italian food. We started with the Truffle Arancini (served with an artichoke bechamel), paired with Torali Caio E Pepe—a delicious pasta course of ucatini noodle, preserved lemon, toasted black pepper, and pecorino Romano cheese. For the entrée, we opted for Roasted Bronzino, served with a parsnip puree, lemons, artichokes, and marinated olives. Add a bottle of Sancerre wine and it ranks among some of the best dining experiences in Chicago (and lived up to memories of dining at Ritz London many years ago). From there, the evening, and the city, is yours. Whether you hit the town or savor your suite in the sky, February may have never felt so fabulous. The Ritz Carlton-Chicago is located at Water Tower Place, 160 E. Pearson Street, in Chicago. For more information, visit ritzcarlton.com/en/ hotels/chicago.

UPSCALE RUMMAGE THINKING OF OTHERS NEVER GETS OLD FOR AGELESS, FUN-LOVING RENEE BALDWIN, FOUNDER OF AN ENDURING NONPROFIT. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

Renee Baldwin sits in a squishy, comfortable couch at Libertyville-based Upscale Rummage, the nonprofit re-sale shop she launched at the Montessori School of Lake Forest in 1999. The white couch is one of 100,000-plus items for sale in a 10,000-square-foot warehouse. Baldwin, a 61-year-old from Lake Bluff, shifts her frame slightly in order to dangle her legs over an arm of the couch—in the middle of a highly animated recollection of her days as an inspector of shock absorbers at a die-cast Ford shop in Glenview. “Did that job for one summer in high school,” says a beaming Baldwin. “Sat on a bucket as I worked. During breaks, though, I danced, or did pirouettes. I had to get up and move.” Baldwin then elevates her legs and churns them, quickly. Moments later, an Upscale Rummage employee and a woman interested in buying an attractive side table approach the white couch and stop three feet from Baldwin. “How much for this table?” the woman asks. “That item just came in,” Baldwin responds. “Forty-two dollars.” The woman nods. She returns minutes later. “How about thirty?” she suggests. “Sure,” Baldwin says, eliciting a smile from the Upscale Rummage customer. Baldwin turns her head to face her interviewer, who’s sitting on a white couch across from her. “Hey, that’s thirty dollars we didn’t have before the table arrived here,” she says. Upscale Rummage, in a nutshell: priceless. It exists solely to help others. All proceeds from the shop go to local nonprofits in Lake and Cook counties. Through its Sharing Saturdays program, Upscale Rummage supports child and animal welfare groups, music and sports programs, the arts and education, and many organizations that serve adults with disabilities. It also assists refugee families and people affected by house fires, medical emergencies, job loss, and homelessness, among other hardships. “We give so much care to donated items, and that’s one of the reasons ‘upscale’ is in our name,” Baldwin says. “We clean toasters and blenders. One of my super, big-hearted volunteers, Glory

Renee Baldwin

“We aim to give everyone who sets foot in here a dignified shopping experience.” Among the other items in the warehouse waiting for a new home are books, accessories, jewelry, artwork, linens, rugs, luggage, lamps, collectables, and sporting goods. Upscale Rummage’s 20-plus beneficiaries include Art Impact Project, Citadel Theatre, Equestrian Connection, House of Peace, PAWS Chicago, Gorton Community Center, and Reading Power. Baldwin’s days as a serial do-gooder began at Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, if not before. Her visits to nursing home facilities as a volunteer, along with the countless service projects she completed in four years inside the high school, garnered commendations galore. Earned certificates doubled as wallpaper in her room. Renee was only 18 when her father, Ed, died. Ed was a Realtor who loved hosting garage sales—even if he displayed only two items because, “Garage sales allowed him more opportunities to talk with neighbors,” his daughter says. Ed’s trips with Renee to the Cubs’ 1:20 p.m. games at Wrigley Field always began at 7 a.m. They would eat breakfast together near the ballpark and be sure to show up in time for batting practice. “Dad had Tuesdays off, and he taught me how to change the oil, how to change a tire,” Baldwin says. “He taught me a lot of things. I regret not having an adult relationship with him. My mom (the late Lorraine) … everyone absolutely loved her. My parents were great ball-

room dancers. I loved to dance, too. I did tap, and I took jazz dance lessons in Evanston. “I remember constantly entertaining my parents’ guests at our home.” Baldwin got her telecommunications degree at Indiana University and wanted to be the next Jane Pauley. She became a commercial music producer at Opus III instead, for 10 years, after working for two years as the department head of accessories at Crate & Barrel in Northbrook. “Best job ever,” Baldwin says of her tenure at Opus III. “There I was, in a recording studio, with the best musicians. We produced ad jingles for McDonald’s, United Airlines, Betty Crocker, State Farm, and others.” Renee met her future husband, Chris, thanks to Chris’s little sister, Leslie, who set them up on a blind date. They got married in 1988 and raised Brendan, now 28, and Brede, 23. Both sons are graduates of Montessori School of Lake Forest—Upscale Rummage’s birthplace and home for seven years—and accomplished musicians. “I knew a lot of people who wanted to get rid of nice things,” Baldwin recalls. “I figured, ‘Why not try to find new homes for those things and benefit others at the same time.’ We started holding one rummage sale a year, for a weekend, at Montessori.” That grew to two weekends a year. Then to four weekends. Proceeds from each sale, between $35,000-$40,000, funded school scholarships. Upscale Rummage’s home base moved six times since 1995, before settling in Libertyville, at the site of an O’Reilly’s Furniture store, four years ago. “We’re here to provide items at low cost or no cost to those with needs, to those who are underserved,” Baldwin says. “But we’re also here for anyone interested in simply buying high-quality, low-priced items for their homes. We are so blessed to help so many.” Baldwin shares another story from her spot on the couch. This one occurred between 13 to 15 years ago. A women entered Upscale Rummage and browsed here and there but looked longingly, several times, at a framed sheet of lyrics written in calligraphy. They were the lyrics of Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” the love theme from the movie Titanic. “I was watching her as she shopped,” Baldwin says. “She bought a couple of items and headed toward her car. I then took the framed lyrics off the wall and caught up with her outside. I told here, ‘Here, take this. It’s a gift with purchase.’ ” Upscale Rummage is located at 801 East Park Avenue in Libertyville. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, For more information, call (224) 440-5658 or visit upscalerummage.org. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
