SECOND BLOOM NORTH SHORE NATIVE CATHY BARANCIK GRAHAM TURNS MORNING SKETCHES INTO AN ARTFUL GARDEN BOOK. LAURA LAYFER TREITMAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
A few years ago, Cathy Barancik Graham made a promise to herself to wake up every morning and sketch. She even labeled the drawings by day and date until there were simply too many to count. Graham joined Instagram and began sharing her drafts online. At the encouragement of her friend, interior designer (and author of Fifth Avenue Style) Howard Slatkin, those posts turned into a publication, Second Bloom: Cathy Graham’s Art of the Table (Vendome Press). The book is filled with beautiful images and how-to tips for seasonal designs and decorations shown artfully arranged in her Manhattan and Nantucket homes. The title of the monograph also offers insight to Graham’s predicament at the time—a long-term marriage and subsequent divorce, and her distance from an established career as a fashion illustrator. The pages reveal the way she cultivated herself and her talents back to their natural habitat. “Even in high school I remember painting on belts and selling them at a local shop,” says Graham, who was raised half-and-half between the North Shore in Highland Park and downtown Chicago. Her mother was an art teacher, and maternal grandmother, a gardener. Richard Barancik, Graham’s father, is a well-known Continued on PG 10

windows at Bergdorf Goodman when the show CATS premiered on Broadway,” reminisces Graham of the pre-social media mainstream days when actual visual imagery for publicity had greater demand. Then, her self-described bohemian loft-liv-
ing style was complemented by savvy purchases such as her coveted Cy Twombly works on paper from Castelli Graphics. “I could only afford them one-by-one but I knew I had to have them.” When Graham married and moved to
ture Rooms. Alternatively, Graham’s legendary hostess skills and penchant for setting elaborate tables in elegant interiors was influenced by her late mother-in-law, Katharine Graham, the iconic American publisher once at the helm of The Washington Post.
the Upper East Side, with the exception of her abstract art, she left that wilder expressive side behind. Fast-forward and the classic townhouse she has now lived in for over three decades has proven both the perfect remedy and prime canvas for her emotional and creative outlets. Graham’s dining room is one of her favorites to fancifully adorn with cleverly crafted flowers. Single stems can be traditionally laid out in a row of eBay purchased bud vases lining the center of a table or scattered au naturel on a sideboard, while garlands frame the arches of doorways, mirrors or mantels. Look closely, however, and you will surely find her signature humor and whimsical surprises amidst delicate roses and peonies. Perhaps a hidden figurine of a man or woman, a tiny dollhouse size kitchen sink and mini model airplanes tucked into the mix, or even vegetables such as deep purple radishes she cuts and loops around branches as if they were jewel-like dangling earrings. That affinity for all things eclectic and small developed out of many visits with her father to the Art Institute of Chicago’s Thorne Minia-
“She would have these glamorous D.C. dinners and at one point conversation would cease, and a question thrown out for all around the table to answer,” recalls Graham. “I was always so shy, but I observed.” It was at one of those evenings where she met Robert Isabell, the event planner extraor-
architect and in the city, they lived at 100 E. Bellevue, a building that he designed (he is also the only remaining living member of the Monuments Men, a group that served and saved works of art during WWII). He reveled in weekends reserved for taking his daughter to museums, galleries, and special trips to Saks Fifth Avenue for a pretty outfit purchase. “My dad has an aesthetic eye,” notes Graham, crediting that vision with helping guide her own artistic pursuits. She spent four years in Providence earning a BFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design, and after graduation decided to follow her then boyfriend and college comrades to New York City. “I had a good color sense and liked vintage, and a friend said you’ve always loved fashion so why not go to Parsons School of Design where there is a Fashion Illustration Department?” Graham took the advice and joined the intensive program, quickly becoming a highly sought after freelance illustrator and commercial artist. Nearly every notable industry name hired her for projects, including Bonwit Teller, Bloomingdale’s catalogs, and New York and Rolling Stone magazines. “I even did these elaborate Flower Explosion, uses curly branches painted with purple beet slices wired on to look like jewelry.

LAKE FOREST-BASED FILL A HEART 4 KIDS SENDS MESSAGES OF LOVE AND HOPE TO YOUNG PEOPLE IN NEED. BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
A teenage boy wakes up and sees the first Valentine’s Day card he’d ever received hanging on the wall in his room. He’d put it there. Maybe he was a foster child. Or a child on the cusp of homelessness. Or a son who’d endured horrific rounds of abuse. The boy blinks. The boy sees the Valentine’s
positive experiences to help their hearts heal and restore dignity so they can achieve brighter futures. FAH4K works with 18 children’s homes/facilities in the city and suburbs. “We don’t want one more group home for children to be shut down in Illinois,” says McAveeney, who, a year before forming the eventual nonprofit, helped out at a children’s home and heard a girl ask her, ‘Could you be my mommy?’ “This matters so much to me, our Fill a Heart 4 Kids. This is my heart and soul. We serve the worst 4 percent of the cases. These children are so valuable and so worthy of
facility that provides hope, healing, and home for children in Chicago, before motoring to locations in North Chicago, Waukegan, and Lake Villa. The cars’ trunks will be packed with Valentine gift bags for hundreds of children. “All these children, they’re used to getting hand-me-downs,” says McAveeney, a graduate of Woodlands Academy in Lake Forest. “What if they got something new? Imagine their faces when they receive something, say clothing, that nobody else had ever worn. We’ve seen those faces—they light up, instantly. These kids are in shock. They say, ‘Wait, this is for me? Re-
Read that note and many more in FAH4K’s pop-up shop. But a word of warning before entering the location: Be prepared to be showered with love and warmth and a burst of colors that makes the brightest rainbow appear … bland. The vast bouquets of normal and heart-shaped balloons—red, pink, white, purple, lavender—attract your eyes first. They’re voluminous to some, balloon-inous to others. They’re there thanks to FAH4K Board Member Helen Gerbin and her organic balloon arts and events venture. Stuffed animals of various sizes and countenances, along with Fill a Heart 4 Kids hats, rest on shelves. If happiness fails to lift you within minutes, check your pulse. “Annie is an extremely visual person; she’s a landscape artist and a former retail store owner,” says Fill a Heart 4 Kids Vice President and Board Member Margie Alpert, who moved from Barrington to Deerfield four years ago and wanted to join FAH4K as soon as she heard about its mission. “Her Fill a Heart 4 Kids store is adorable and whimsical. “Annie,” she adds, “never stops. Does the job of 10 people. Her heart is so big, and she cares so much for these kids. Totally invested in helping them achieve brighter futures—that’s Annie.” Market Square ownership recently extended FAH4K’s shop lease. That means FAH4K gets to remain at its colorful base for Project Hop (an Easter-themed endeavor, March 1-April 15) and Project Flip Flop (May 1-June 1, to help children celebrate their report card). “It’s magical inside that store,” says Christiane Fischer, a senior asset manager at Mid-America. “On behalf of Market Square, my heart is full, knowing what Annie and her group are doing for children in need.” Visit fillaheart4kids.org for more information. Near the bottom of the main page, choose Fill a Heart 4 Kids as your charity by clicking the AmazonSmile box. Your help makes it possible to give $10 fast food gift cards to help homeless kids get off the street at night, feel safer, and eat a warm meal with dignity.
Volunteers prepare to Fill a Heart 4 Kids with Project Valentine goodies. Day card again. The boy smiles. The card—featuring heartfelt, handwritten messages from a volunteer at Lake Forestbased Fill a Heart 4 Kids, as part of the organization’s annual Project Valentine—reminds him that somebody had thought about him and cared about him. The boy’s smile grows. So does his hope. A moment like that is one that continues to drive the spirit behind Fill a Heart 4 Kids, launched in 2008 by the forever-kindhearted and highly energetic Annie McAveeney, a Lake Forest resident, a mother of two (Ellorie, 28, and Lilly, 24), and a “mother” of too-manyto-count children in need. FAH4K plans to distribute thousands of care packages—prepared by McAveeney, her tireless staff of volunteers, and local “shoppers”/volunteers at FAH4K’s pop-up shop at 270 Market Square (formerly the home of Sweet Pete’s in Lake Forest)—to group homes/facilities for foster kids. Each care package contains pajamas, socks, toiletries, candy, and coloring books, among other items, and a priceless handwritten note. “You are a star!” one note starts. “From a friend.” On February 13, Project Valentine’s 30-vehicle car parade is scheduled to snake near a

CRAWFISH MONICA
Crawfish season is in full swing, and there’s no better way to prepare those bright red “mudbugs” than in a hot boil of spices. The traditional meal version of the boil incudes sausage, potatoes and corn cobettes in the mix and is a joyful mess to eat. But for a more elegant preparation, you can prepare the boil without the corn/potatoes/sausage add-ins, picking the seasoned meat from the shells to make this creamy linguini dish that shares my name: Crawfish Monica. Because crawfish are little (only 2-½ to 4-inches long) it takes between six and seven pounds of whole crawfish to yield one pound of crawfish tail meat. Note: Save all of the shells (heads, claws & all) and simmer them in a pot to make a nice stock you can use for a crawfish bisque or seafood stew.
INGREDIENTS CRAWFISH BOIL 4 quarts boiling water 4 to 6 Tbsp Cajun Crawfish Boil Spice Mix (below) 6 pounds fresh crawfish 2 whole medium-sized onions 6 cloves garlic 2 lemons, sliced 6 cloves garlic chopped handful of fresh bay leaves (6 to 8) CAJUN CRAWFISH BOIL SPICE BLEND 2 to 3 Tbsp Cayenne pepper 3 Tbsp Spanish paprika 1 Tbsp dried mustard 2 Tbsp each, garlic powder & onion powder 2 Tbsp black peppercorns 3 Tbsp coriander seeds 3 tsp salt CRAWFISH MONICA 1 box linguine, prepared according to box instructions 1 pound crawfish tail meat, prepared in the boil and picked from the shells 1 medium onion, diced small 5 cloves garlic, minced 1 Tbsp butter 1 cup dry white wine 1 cup heavy cream 1/2 cup freshly-grated Parmesan cheese 1 Tbsp fresh chives, minced 1 Tbsp fresh parsley, minced salt & freshly cracked pepper, to taste Fresh lemon juice, to taste

METHOD MAKE SPICE BLEND: Mix all ingredients. PREPARE CRAWFISH BOIL: Make your crawfish-boil spice blend. Set 4 quarts of water to boiling. Add 4 to 6 Tbsp of the spice blend, plus a handful of fresh bay leaves, 2 whole onions, 6 cloves of garlic, and 2 sliced lemons to the boiling water. Add as many of the crawfish as will fit into the boiling water. Boil for five minutes, until crawfish are bright red. Remove crawfish from pot. Repeat with remaining crawfish, removing after cooked and bright red.
Prepare linguine according to package instructions. Save pasta water. In a large, heavy-bottomed saute pan, melt butter and add onions and garlic, sweat and saute at low temperature until onions and garlic are translucent. Add wine and turn up heat a bit; cook until liquid in the pan has been absorbed by the onions and garlic. Add cream and half of the parmesan cheese. Reduce. Remove pan f rom heat; fold in crawfish gently. Taste sauce and adjust seasoning with salt, pepper, and lemon. Combine finished sauce with prepared linguine. If too MAKE CRAWFISH MONICA: Pick the tail meat from 6 pounds of crawfish (enough to yield 1 thick, add a bit of the hot, reserved pasta water. Plate on to individual pound) that was prepared in a crawfish boil. Save shells to make stock. serving dishes. Garnish with chives, parsley and extra cheese.

LAKE FOREST HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR SWIMMER ANDREW CLEMMENSEN DRAWS ON HIS LATE GRANDFATHER’S RESOLVE IN WARTIME TO HELP BATTLE TODAY’S PANDEMIC-RELATED CHALLENGES. BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
dedication from him, as a swimmer and as a leader, with COVID-19 putting our season on hold.” Leading workouts via Google meetings has not always been smooth sailing for Clemmensen and his fellow captains, but Clemmensen owns the patience and resilience to make those virtual gatherings productive ones. And, under the direction of Clemmensen and several of his teammates, the Scouts designed a workout regimen to help generate funds on December 17 for the annual Hour of Power Relay event, which honors the late Ted Mullin and raises funds and
At the North Suburban Conference boys swimming and diving meet in his junior season, Clemmensen, a breaststroker and freestyler, collaborated with a trio of teammates to earn a top-six medal in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The unit placed better than its seed time had projected, with Clemmensen clocking a personal-best split as the relay’s third leg. It marked the pinnacle of Clemmensen’s athletic career, to date. “High fives all around,” recalls the 5-foot-11, 150-pound Clemmensen, who also competes in water polo and scored a goal in the Scouts’
Late last year, with his final prep swimming season on pause and his “commute” to school roughly the distance between his bed and a nearby computer screen, Lake Forest High School senior Andrew Clemmensen had not let the pandemic discourage him in the least. Thoughts of a brave water boy from another generation—his late grandfather Richard Clemmensen, Seaman First Class in the U.S. Navy and a World War II veteran—fueled Andrew’s positive approach in and out of the pool during uncertain times. Richard died in Oak Brook in 2015, at age 87. “They rushed my grandfather to graduate from high school early, about halfway through his senior year, before he headed overseas to fight,” the 17-year-old Clemmensen says, adding Grandpa Dick commanded instant respect and radiated kindness. “Imagine the toughness he and other kids had to have when they were fighting for our country at such a young age. Their generation … it went through the Great Depression, disease, war. People made a lot of sacrifices and persevered. I’m kind of missing my senior year, as are my classmates, all while dealing with an entirely different kind of challenge. “We, too, can get though this with perseverance.” With words like those, ones capable of galvanizing any kind of squad, no wonder Clemmensen was named one of five captains for the Scouts’ boys swimming and diving team under coach Cindy Dell in the 2020-2021 season. Exhibit B: Clemmensen oversaw the construction of two tables—each built for ablebodied people and people with disabilities— and donated them to Bernie’s Book Bank in Andrew Clemmensen of Lake Forest is poised to lead the way. his family’s garage until 10 p.m., and developing preparation, leadership, and woodworking skills along the way. “You had to have an idea of what you wanted to do each day and then strive to complete it,” says Clemmensen, whose father, Chris, swam at Downers Grove North High School, and whose mother, Beth, competed in track and field at Glenbard South High School in Glen Ellyn. “My dad helped me, along with my Eagle Scout coach, Jim Mordini. My older brother, Connor (a business major at the University of Michigan), has also been an influence in my life.
He was a Boy Scout and a swimmer and a water polo player. I followed in his positive footsteps.” Clemmensen first set foot in a Lake Forest Recreation Center karate class at age 4 and earned his black belt in 2019. He has also been a percussionist for Lake Forest High School’s band and marching band since his freshman year. “Andrew is the epitome of a student-athlete,” Dell says. SCREEN SAVOR TV APPEARANCES MOUNTING FOR COOKING MAVEN AND BOUTIQUE CATERING COMPANY OWNER MILA FURMAN, JUST AS SHE HAD ENVISIONED—NEARLY 30 YEARS AGO. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
Mila Furman was 11 years old, maybe 12, when she first watched the Food Network show “Essence of Emeril” with her mother, Dora. Mila and Mom kicked back at home in Skokie on that seminal day for the youngster, as celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse shared his “kicked-up” recipes with his viewers. Mila’s eyes grew, grew, and grew some more, morphing into the size of a pair of dinner plates. Bam! Just like that, Mila knew what she wanted to do when she was old enough— and tall enough—to stand behind a kitchen counter and whip up a dish for her sure-to-be-enthralled television viewers. “I saw myself on TV, as I sat on that couch next to my mom,” Furman, now 38 and a Lake County resident, recalls, adding she and her mother also watched the show Great Chefs of the World together. “It catapulted me, watching Emeril. It didn’t matter to me that most of the chefs on Food Network back then were men. I remember how excited I was that day when I turned to my mom and told her, ‘I want to do that!’ “After that there was never a minute when I did not think I would be on TV someday, teaching people how to cook.” Mila Furman appeared on TV in 2020. Often. The grown-up girl/private chef in Girl and the Kitchen—which started as a cooking blog in 2013 and expanded with the launch of a boutique catering company, specializing in servicing many homes on the North Shore, four years later—is Furman. ABC7 Chicago’s Windy City LIVE featured the highly engaging, fun-loving wife of Mark and mother of two (daughter Charlie, 8, and son Marcel, 3) in a segment. So did WGN. And Fox Chicago. Windy City Live booked her for another segment. On February 9 she squared off as one of four chefs in a competitive pop-up kitchen outside a grocery store on the show Supermarket Stakeout. That show’s network? None other than … Food Network. Furman recently introduced her masterclass, “The 4-Step Cooking Method,” to Girl and the Kitchen fans. The four steps: learn, identify, apply, and practice. The course centers on technique, taste, and efficiency, rather than a specific recipe. “My goal with this masterclass is to combat the common misconception that cooking is stressful or scary,” says Furman, who considers herself a writer first and a chef second. “Too often I hear people worried about a step of a recipe, or frustrated that they don’t have enough

lowing them to focus on the things they love most.” Born in the former Soviet republic Moldova, Furman and her family immigrated to the United States when she was 7. She attended Niles West High School in Skokie, acing cooking classes with ease and garnering plenty of attention inside and outside the classroom with her voice and sense of humor. “I was loud and kind of a class clown,” she admits. Not long after graduation, tragedy struck. Mila’s mother and favorite TV mate, Dora, died when Mila was 20. Grandmother Sura would become Mila’s second strong matriarch in her life. “For years my mom and I had planned to open a café,” says Furman, who earned a degree at Kendall College, a culinary arts and hospitality management school based in Evanston, before it relocated to Chicago in 2005. “A small café, nothing fancy. It would have been similar to a café we enjoyed in Skokie. My mom had a great sense of humor, as well as a strong belief that I should stand on my feet forever, without ever having to be dependent on anyone. And my grandmother (who lived to be 89) was tough, really tough. But she also was delicate. “My grandma made the best chicken soup and taught me how to make it. She was also generous, to everyone. She had a favorite saying, which I love and follow to this day: ‘Smile and God will smile back at you.’ ” Furman hung up her toque more than 10 years ago, taking a position as an executive administrative assistant with US Foods and serving the food service distributor for about five years. She planned events and meetings. But the kitchen was her wheelhouse, and she returned to it professionally. Smart move. She then hatched Girl and the Kitchen and its punchy mission: “Good Food. Done Right.”

“I’ve been blessed,” Furman insists. “My husband has been incredibly supportive through the years, especially after my mother died and I headed to Kendall. For years, beginning when I was 8, I battled anxiety, fearing I’d fail no matter what I tried. I don’t fear failure anymore. I don’t fear hard work, either. I work hard so I can vacation three times a year with my husband and children.” When Charlie was born? “I’d never felt that kind of joy,” Furman says. When Marcel was born? “My heart doubled,” she says. “I love my children, dearly. Love everything about them. Charlie is 8 going on 38. Marcel is a Tasmanian devil.” Mila Furman is a Moldovan made good—in the U.S. “I was a little immigrant girl with a big dream,” Furman says. “I can’t emphasize that enough. Nothing was ever handed to me. I worked really hard for everything. Anybody can do what they want to do as long as they have a handful of wishes. I want to have my own TV cooking show someday; I want to go national. I also want to build a legacy for my kids. “I built my company from nothing but hope and charisma.” Visit girlandthekitchen.com for more information, including details about Furman’s new masterclass, “The 4-Step Cooking Method,” as well as registration for the free webinar.
