ONE HOUR WITH HAROLD RAMIS A FORMER STAFF WRITER REFLECTS ON AN AFTERNOON SPENT WITH A SCREEN COMEDY LEGEND. BY JAKE JARVI THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

With this month's passing of Ivan Reitman, the director of Ghostbusters, and the recent release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, I've spent a lot of time reflecting on the afternoon I got to spend with the legendary Harold Ramis thanks to my position as a staff writer at Sheridan Road. Prior to that day in May 2010, I'd just been a casual fan of the late comedy icon and former Glencoe resident. I loved Ghostbusters as a kid and his role as Egon Spengler was a big part of that. Groundhog Day, which he directed, was a VCR staple in my household, as well as the homes of everyone I knew. In cameo roles in movies like Knocked Up and As Good As It Gets, he always played warm, sage characters trying to impart helpful advice to struggling main characters, but I had no idea what to expect when meeting him in person. As soon as he walked in the door of the photo studio, with a great big beard and sunglasses, he was immediately polite and professional. He'd recently been honored by Landmarks Illinois for his "extraordinary contributions to Chicago's civic and cultural

skyline" and agreed to be interviewed about the event, so we sat down for what we all assumed would be a brief Q&A. As soon as he started discussing the event, however, his indelible inclinations as a storyteller took over and he began describing in great comedic detail how he came up with an impromptu speech at the event. Once he had our photographer and myself laughing, the interview turned into a conversation I'll never forget and we ended up talking for almost an hour. We bounced around covering his time at Second City, the National Lampoon, breaking into showbusiness with Animal House, a bunch of his movies, and more. Every question was answered with personal stories, deeply researched philosophies, and hilarious professional The late comedy legend Harold Ramis was a Glencoe resident. PHOTOGRAPHY BY JON CANCELINO

the hospital and patching things up before it was too late. And then again, when Murray acknowledged his friend at that year's Academy Awards. I obviously didn't know Harold Ramis. I simply spent a truly delightful hour with the man and many many, many hours watching and rewatching his stories. Seeing a CGI version of his ghost appear in Ghostbusters: Afterlife made me well up again as his real-life friends had an onscreen chance to remember him and his legacy publicly. I guess I felt compelled to do the same, even after only one hour.

anecdotes. He was completely open and endlessly engaging. It was such a fun conversation, that upon Ramis's passing in February 2014, we uploaded an almost-uncut audio version of the interview onto the Sheridan Road YouTube channel. That audio version was then referenced in an Ad Week article titled "Reporter Cracks Up as Harold Ramis Explains Movie's Psychology Today Connection." The only time the conversation faltered was when I asked about Bill Murray. As I stated, I was a fan of his films and I'd researched his career for the interview, but I hadn't happened upon any of the stories of their falling out during the production of Groundhog Day. So, when I asked, "Do you ever see Bill when he comes to town?" He seemed a little stunned and he simply said, "Bill and I…don't socialize." He redirected and we fell back into the fun conversational rhythm for the rest of the interview. There are two audio versions of this interview up on the Sheridan Road YouTube and I cut the Bill Murray question out of both because his response made me so sad. My eyes welled up when I heard stories of Murray visiting Ramis in

LUXURY MISSION NORTH SHORE EXCHANGE RECYCLES THE BEST BRANDS OF CLOTHING AND HOUSEWARES TO BENEFIT CHILDREN IN NEED IN CHICAGO. BY MITCH HURST THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Glencoe resident Wendy Serrino has always wanted to help charities that meet the needs of low-income children. Over the years, while working in the finance industry, she has raised thousands for international charities like UNICEF and charities in Chicago that serve children in poor neighborhoods. But in the early 2010s, efforts to fundraise on her own for the causes she cares about started becoming a slog, and her reputation began, literally, to precede her. “I have been involved with UNICEF for over 20 years and helped fund a charter school on the South Side, so I've been doing that kind of work for a long time,” Serrino says. “What I realized was that when you do that kind of work, you get really tired of asking people for money—to the point where people want to cross the street when they see you coming because they know you're working on some kind of project and you're going to ask them for money.” So, in October 2012 Serrino leaned on her business background to start a nonprofit and in March 2013, she opened North Shore Exchange—a consignment and resale shop in Glencoe. The company’s sole purpose is to raise funds that are granted to nonprofit organizations in the Chicago area that seek to improve the lives of low-income children and families. One hundred percent of the store’s profits, after covering operational costs, are granted charity. “To me it was the perfect opportunity to find a new way to generate money for nonprofits, and for me the calling is to serve the poor,” she says. “That's why I still do a lot of work for UNICEF, because they help children everywhere; they help the poorest children.” Serrino says running a business with the singular purpose of supporting charity allows customers to participate in the mission of the organization, either by consigning, donating, or volunteering. They know their efforts are generating resources for nonprofits that desperately need funding to do important work. As far as business goes, the North Shore is the perfect location to operate a consignment shop, although North Shore Exchange does plenty of business online and operates two additional stores in Skokie and at 900 N. Michigan Ave. in Chicago. “The funny thing is, people will say that we’re going to run out of supply, to which we laugh because there is an endless supply of items for us,” Serrino says. “The tricky part THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

for us now is that we compete against some major resellers that we didn't compete with in the early days, but we also turn down a lot more items than we accept because we offer a curated collection of items on purpose.” That business model makes the company both more profitable and more efficient, which allows the Exchange the ability to make even larger commitments to charity. Counterintuitively, the store has been extremely profitable throughout COVID-19. While physical stores had to be closed for a period of time in early 2020, and Serrino was worried about what the future might hold, when they reopened business flourished, Turns out when people are stuck at home during a pandemic, one of the ways they pass the time is cleaning out their closets. They’re tired of looking at all the same stuff and want to spruce up their houses a bit. “People were in a place where they felt safe shopping and I'm not really sure why that was, but our shoppers came back online and business tripled,” Serrino says.” So, that really helped us. I think people took a step back and liked the idea of shopping resale, of less waste, and that it's more purposeful and meaningful.” All the increased business created a new,

but welcome, challenge for Serrano and the team that works with her to make grants to the nonprofits North Shore Exchange supports. Tripled profits meant triple the grantmaking. “The most recent iteration of our plan was to be a powerful force in Chicagoland philanthropy for people living at, or below, the poverty level,” says Serrano “You don't do that by making $10,000 grants. So, I had a meeting with the committee and said we need to shift what we do to be more focused.” To have a bigger impact, Serrino and her committee decided to focus on organizations that could put larger chunks of money to good use. Last summer, they made two $100,000 grants to organizations that have a proven track record of helping alleviate poverty in Chicago. For the 2020-2021 fiscal year, which ran from July to July, North Shore Exchange made total grants of $585,000, a record over the previous annual high of $455,000. Since it opened its doors in 2013, the company has made grants of more than $2.6 million. Business is still growing for the 2021-2022 fiscal year. Sales are up 42 percent this to date. “The resale business for luxury fashion and home furnishings is very good right now,”

Serrino says. “We feel very good for our business and very hopeful for our future.” Glencoe resident Nicole Hayek is Chair of the Philanthropy Committee for North Shore Exchange, a volunteer position that keeps her heavily involved with the team that reviews and approves grantmaking applications. “I've been volunteering at the Glencoe store since it opened in 2013 and I just love the whole mission of recycling goods and using the sale of those goods to help people,” Hayek says. “It's a fun store to work in and you have a lot of people who are very energized around the mission.” Hayek says her role on the Philanthropy Committee allows her to learn about organizations that she wouldn't otherwise have known about. “Having the opportunity to do site visits and to learn about their clientele and their stories just really makes you feel grateful,” Hayek says. “For me, it’s a combination of working with a passionate group of people and using the proceeds to help people who really need it.” For more about North Shore Exchange, visit northshoreexchange.org.

BEEFY MUSHROOM BARLEY SOUP BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

A great soup is three things at once—nourishing, tasty, and easy on the budget. This beefy mushroom barley soup lassos that golden triad. The stock is made in the oven, with meaty beef neck bones. Combined with barley, sweet parsnips, carrot, and onion in the soup, it makes a hearty meal.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE BEEF STOCK:

• 2-½ pounds meaty beef neck bones • Pepper and salt • 2 tsp olive oil • 2 large onions, peeled and diced • 2 large carrots, peeled and cut in large chunks • 2 parsnips, peeled and cut in large chunks • 1 bay leaf • 2 celery stalks cut in large chunks • 3 cloves garlic • 5 peppercorns • Pepper and salt FOR THE MUSHROOMS AND BARLEY:

• 2 cups pearled barley, cooked according to package directions • 1, 16-ounce package mushrooms • 1 Tbsp butter • 1 tsp soy sauce • 1 tsp sugar • 1 tsp salt • 1 tsp freshly cracked pepper

METHOD Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Rub each portion of beef with salt and pepper. Sprinkle the chopped onion in the bottom of deep casserole or large Dutch oven. Place beef bones and carrot chunks over onion, drizzle with olive oil and place in the oven for 40 minutes until well browned. Reduce oven heat to 325 degrees. Add parsnip and celery chunks, garlic cloves, peppercorns, and bay leaf to the beef; cover all with water. Roast in the oven until meat is falling off the bones, about three

12

hours. Scrape contents of the casserole into a large colander over a large stock pot, catching the stock in the pot. Simmer the stock over medium low heat. Remove meat from the beef bones, discarding any fat or gristle and cutting meat into small pieces. Discard bones. Cut cooked parsnip, celery, and carrot into small pieces and add to the stock pot. Add meat and cooked diced onion to the stock pot. Cook barley according to package directions. While barley cooks, prepare mushrooms. Roughly

chop mushrooms and pulse in a food processor until finely diced. In a sauté pan over medium heat, melt 1 Tbsp. butter. Add diced mushroom and cook stirring occasionally until mushrooms have released liquid and are cooked through. Stir in 1 tsp. soy sauce, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp sugar, and 1 tsp freshly cracked pepper. Add mushrooms to soup pot. Stir in cooked barley. Serve hot. Note: If you want a looser soup, add less of the cooked barley to the soup pot. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

GORTON’S GO-TO THE RELIABLE FORCE BEHIND GORTON COMMUNITY CENTER’S VARIETY OF MAIN EVENTS IS LAKE BLUFF RESIDENT ANN WILDMAN. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

Garrison Keillor got lost in Lake Forest in February 2020. The author, singer, humorist, radio personality, and engaging storyteller couldn’t find his way—on foot—from the Deer Path Inn to the Gorton Community Center, where he was scheduled to entertain a sold-out John & Nancy Hughes Theater. The distance separating the two locations? Two-tenths of a mile. Mr. Keillor parked his 6-foot-4 frame in front of the Walgreens on Deerpath and then called Gorton. Gorton Community Center Director of Events Ann Wildman hopped into her car to rescue the creator of the radio show A Prairie Home Companion—and to save the day. “You should have seen him when I arrived at Walgreens,” Wildman says, flashing a smile as she recalls the details of an unforgettable scene. “Garrison was standing alone on a sidewalk, with his head covered by a blanket of snow. And he was singing … singing opera. Quite an eccentric man. “He got into my car, and we made it to Gorton on time.” Wildman, 52, has been steering all kinds of Gorton events—after securing them—since 2016, when GCC hosted maybe nine main bookings. This year? Four to five main events each month, at a gathering place that strives to educate, entertain, and inspire, as well as bring a touch of the city experience to Lake Forest. The Spin Doctors hit the John & Nancy Hughes Theater stage on February 26. Last month Gorton presented Mountainfilm on Tour, an adventurous, conservation-driven festival that featured leading documentary films from around the world. Magician Mike Super, a top finalist

14

on Season 9 of America’s Got Talent, enthralled all at Gorton last summer; the Minneapolisbased Okee Dokee Brothers music duo made scores of children—and more than a few parents—dance in their seats last year; people also enter Gorton for blood drives, jazz concerts, storytelling events, classes, stand-up comedy performances, murder-mystery immersive shows, cook-offs, and more.

I love my job. It’s so different, compared to what I did in my previous career. I get to work to fulfill the mission of an essential nonprofit instead of constantly shooting to hit a certain number or to make a certain amount of money.

Ann Wildman

“We’re bringing in musicians and bands that you’d usually find at City Winery in Chicago and similar venues,” says Wildman, a mother of two ( Jack, 22, and Kate, 19, with husband Mark) and a Lake Bluff resident since 2005. “We like to make it easy and convenient for members of the Lake Forest and Lake Bluff communities to experience such entertainment in their back yard. “The variety of talent we get to perform in our Gorton Center Live series is something I’m proud of. But there’s no way I’d be able to pull any of this off without the help of our collaborative staff or without the trusting, hands-off leadership of (GCC Executive Director) Amy Wagliardo, who knows how important a range of programming is to the vitality of a community center. I’ve never been around a more supportive, positive group of colleagues than this one.” The second oldest of Bill and Mary Ann Bray’s four children, Ann grew up in downstate Alton and, as a sixth grader, trained a horse named Golden Boy for a 4-H project. She and the equine won Best Novice honors at a horse show. Wildman cheered and played four years of varsity tennis at Marquette High School, before hitting the books at Marquette University in Milwaukee, majoring in journalism and minoring in public relations. Her father, a financial advisor, died at the age of 89 in February 2021. “He was well-liked, incredibly kind, and helpful to others,” Wildman says. “My father had a good heart.”

| SATURDAY FEBRUARY 26 | SUNDAY FEBRUARY 27 2022

When Wildman was a recruiter for the career placement firm Richard-Michael Group in Chicago, she met her future husband on a blind date in Evanston. Ann and Mark, a Minnesotan (like Keillor), dined at Dave’s Italian Kitchen and then headed to an ice arena, where Mark and fellow Northwestern Kellogg School of Management alumni battled in a hockey game. Mark, a wing, scored a goal. Mark and Ann faced off in a church for “I do’s” in 1994. Ann entered the field of executive search after three years at Richard-Michael, landing an associate position at A.T. Kearney in Chicago for a year before working for three years— and rising to senior associate—at Heidrick & Struggles in Chicago. “My time as a recruiter was stressful,” Wildman admits. “Executive-search work wasn’t as cut-throat, and it gave me opportunities to learn and grow. My mentor at Heidrick & Struggles was (the late) Fred Kahn, a managing partner who lived in Winnetka. He loved to teach; I loved to learn. He taught me how to deal with people, how to be diplomatic, and how to remain calm and work effectively under pressure. “Fred,” she adds, “was such a classy, upstanding man.” In 2016 she searched for professional, parttime work in a local setting. Gorton had an open position. The bonus? A couple of Ann’s friends worked at the community center. “I didn’t want a pressure-cooker, and I wanted a job that would give me joy,” Wildman says. “I was really, really lucky, getting the opportunity to not only work with such a wonderful staff in a beloved place but to also help make it a robust place for a special community. “I love my job. It’s so different, compared to what I did in my previous career. I get to work to fulfill the mission of an essential nonprofit instead of constantly shooting to hit a certain number or to make a certain amount of money. Gorton’s good purpose energizes me.” Gorton’s annual Block Party, held in midSeptember and dubbed “summer’s last hurrah,” was created by Wildman in 2016. It’s a free event. It features a movie on a 35-foot outdoor screen (and attendant costume contest), live entertainment, fare from local restaurants, and booths set up by Gorton’s nonprofit tenants. “People gather at the party, bump into a neighbor or two, enjoy entertainment,” Wildman says. “It’s all about family and community. If you’re looking for an example of an event that showcases our department’s collaboration, attend our Block Party. “It’s also the perfect example,” she adds, “of a mission-based event.” Gorton Community Center is located at 400 East Illinois Road in Lake Forest.
