ONE OF A KIND WE SURVEYED BROKERS AND REALTORS ON THE NORTH SHORE LOOKING FOR HOMES THAT HAVE THAT “SOMETHING EXTRA” THAT MAKE THEM UNIQUE. HERE’S WHAT WE FOUND. BY MITCH HURST THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

It’s no secret the North Shore is dotted with iconic homes and estates. While the market is tight right now with inventories are at historic lows, we decided to have a look at what distinguishes some North Shore homes from others, keeping in mind that every home is unique to the purchaser. Noah Levy of the Noah and Janet Group and Engel and Volkërs Chicago North Shore, says the region offers something for everyone, regardless of taste or living priorities. “People are drawn to the North Shore not just for the homes. There are all sorts of homes—new, vintage—and people are attracted to it because of Lake Michigan,” Levy says. “What is nice about the North Shore is that unlike other areas it’s not cookie cutter.” While Levy points out that many of the historical homes on the North Shore have been torn down, some buyers are keeping vintage homes and updating them to make the homes their own. “We sold a house this past fall, the new owners updated the kitchen, and Continued on PG 12

NEWS ONE OF A KIND

If buyers are looking for a separate living space for family or guests, they’ll want to pay a visit to 55 East Onwentsia Road in Lake Forest. Listed by Jean Anderson and Donna Mancuso of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, the French Manor home is set on three acres (a rarity in Lake Forest) and features a full guest apartment with separate entrance. “You actually need to go outside to be able to get in the apartment and it’s a full apartment that somebody can live in,” Mancuso says. “There’s a bedroom, living room, and space for guests.” The home features many other unique touches, including a well-appointed library with classic wood paneling and an arch with

the previous owner’s nephew brought over all the pictures of the original house,” Levy says. “When they built the house it was farmland, just east of the Chicago Botanic Gardens. Some homes have a real history.” Some buyers of vintage homes are keenly interested in learning more about the history of their original property and the owners. Levy and her partner in the Noah and Janet Group, Janet Karabas, listed a home in Glencoe last year and showed pictures of the original house during showings. It swiftly went under contract.

As far as unique features, Levy had a client who bought a new construction home that had to have a heated driveway. Another client didn’t necessarily want to be on the lake, but wanted a lake view which, she says, wasn’t the easiest thing to find. “The lifestyle, education, and recreation of the North Shore is very attractive and hard to beat,” says Karabas, “Wonderful access to Lake Michigan shoreline, beautiful beaches, and swimming and boating just a short walk away from your home.” Levy and Karabas are listing 555 Cherry

Buyers looking for a year-round swim workout might want to have a look at 4200 Walters Avenue in Northbrook, listed by Connie Dornan of @properties in Glenview. In addition to an indoor pool, the 5-bedroom, 7-bath (with 2 half-baths) home features a home theater, billiard room, wine cellar, and a spa with both wet and dry saunas. When the current owners of 272 North Sheridan in Lake Forest first bought the property, they lived in an existing log cabin on the property while they built their custom home adjacent to the cabin. The fully finished cabin features 2 beds, 1 bathroom, and laundry. The cabin can serve as anything from a man cave to a guest house and is perfect for a staycation. “Everybody who sees it can see that it’s spectacular inside. It’s like having a vacation home steps from your house,” says Annie Royster Lenzke with the Dawn McKenna Group and Coldwell Banker Realty. “It’s a fully functioning residence that overlooks a ravine. The property also has an outdoor pool and ice rink. “Sometimes I think half of the kids in Winnetka are over here,” Bret Withey says. “It’s probably because they are.” While many North Shore homes feature wine cellars and fridges. 111 Woodley in Winnetka takes wine collecting to a new level. Everyone is encouraged to come in and simply play. Gurza has demos of all games and wants kids to try them out before purchasing. Complimentary gift wrapping is another great perk. When you think about it, who better to open an educational toy store than a former educator? Allison Gurza grew up in Lake Forest and, other than escaping to California for six years during college, has lived here all of her life. For 15 years, she taught at School of St. Mary, mainly in 4th and 5th grades. “When people would ask me, ‘how long have you been teaching?’ and 15 years would come out of my mouth—I would think, ‘where did all that time go?’ It really felt like a blink of an eye. I was so dedicated to teaching that it was truly my whole life. And I thought, ‘okay, I need to do something different to have a little bit more life balance.’ But it’s so funny, because this year, this has been my whole life, trying to keep the store going,” Gurza says. Gurza left teaching in 2017 to open Sage Explorers. Located on Bank Lane, half of the space is dedicated to unique and interesting toys and games for children of all ages, and half is a Learning Center, where Gurza and a team of educators provide tutoring services. “I didn’t want to completely leave teaching— that’s why this is the perfect combination.” Running any kind of business right now presents a whole new set of challenges. “When COVID-19 first occurred and the kids were elearning, the tutoring aspect really took off and the store essentially temporarily closed. I still tutor almost all day long,” Gurza says. “We take all precautions to make the tutoring aspect safe. Masks are 100 percent required. I did invest in very nice and high-quality air purifiers.” “Our saving grace was Easter. Nobody could leave their house to get supplies. I was up to my eyeballs making Easter baskets. It was really fun. Luckily the store was very well stocked. I made them by age, with different games and toys. And I would supplement when parents wanted them to have candy, from Sweet’s, so that was convenient. I was here every day, even though the store was closed. I was filling online orders, doing delivery, taking phone orders, and creating Easter baskets.” After that it got very quiet. Allison used that opportunity to fine tune some of her business skills. “Obviously my background was education and I could run a store in normal times without a good business background. But running it this year, I decided it was time for me to take the time and learn more about how to better manage the business. Because we were in very lean times and I wanted nothing more than for the store to succeed and survive. I wanted to know how to get it on more stable ground, so I did a lot of learning over the summer when it was quiet.” What makes any business not only survive,

But the store is a huge hit among loyal customers. Tish Houston was first referred to the store because the staff provides tutoring. “My daughter has used the tutoring service, and I have found the tutors to be great. My daughter really enjoys working with her tutor and has gotten a lot out of it, ” Houston says.

“And Allison is a great pleasure to work with, and very professional in scheduling and all parts of that. That brought me into the store, and I just love the store. I think it’s adorable. They have such unique and unusual toys. And again, Allison is wonderful, providing recommendations on age appropriate choices. And I think that’s where the bent of it being a little bit educational is a great fit.” Gurza has stocked the store with new items

SHINE BRIGHT GLENCOE ARTIST NANCY KAPLAN KUPPERSMITH EMPLOYS CRYSTALS TO CREATE DAZZLING WORKS OF ART. so she tested a theory by mounting the pieces on a board and adding crystals. The results were “dazzling,” and Kuppersmith knew almost immediately that she was on to something unique. It was her mother who then encouraged her to continue creating, take more risks, and develop new techniques. “My mom then passed away. The adjustment to becoming an empty nester was, no doubt, compounded by the loss of my mother. It was a seismic shift in my world and a period of introspection,” recalls Kuppersmith. She sought refuge in her studio, spending hours quietly honing her craft and committing to art in a way she had not done before. It was there that she felt closest to her mom, and Kuppersmith calls the period “therapeutic.” Kuppersmith came away from that time with a greater sense of self and a renewed desire to create, formally launching NIK Crystal Art Studios and expanding her process to geometrics and photographs. Despite having no formal art education, the studio took off and commissions started rolling in. Her most ambitious? A private individual called upon Kuppersmith to recreate a 1960s photograph of a luxe coffee van in Florence as a gift to espresso machine manufacturer La Marzocco. The work was later installed at the Accademia del Caffé Espresso, a coffee museum located outside of Florence.

BY ALLISON DUNCAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

North Shore fine artist Nancy Kaplan Kuppersmith specializes in creating one-ofa-kind artwork enhanced with thousands of Austrian-imported Swarovski crystals that she meticulously hand-applies to bring the creation to life. Think of a vintage Chicago travel poster that features 4,500 crystals in just the red beach umbrella alone and a personal wedding photograph in which the bride’s gown is enhanced with 2,000 crystals, some of them no larger than a poppy seed. “Each crystal is like a precious little jewel and the effect of thousands together is quite captivating,” says Kuppersmith. “The radiance and brilliance of the Swarovski crystals help to bring the art to life, shimmering as they capture and reflect light. As viewing angles and lighting conditions change, so too does the piece of art.” But while Kuppersmith grew up in an artistic household—her mother, she says, was always painting, sewing, and visiting the Art Institute of Chicago—it was a foregone con-

clusion that she would eventually attend law school. “I never really considered other possibilities,” says Kuppersmith. “It seemed logical and reasonable. I wanted a career and wanted to help people.” After graduating with a degree in political science from Tulane University in New Orleans, Kuppersmith headed West to study law. It was in the Bay Area that she first met her now husband of more than 30 years, Mike. He, too,

practiced law and was happy doing so. Kuppersmith, however, was not. Once the couple had kids and moved to Glencoe, Kuppersmith left law and shifted her attention to raising a family, becoming involved in many of the kid’s activities. However, it was what happened while the kids were at school that really recharged Kuppersmith’s batteries, so to speak. “I could often be found in our home’s very well-stocked craft room,” she says. “I made jewelry, designed invitations, crafted mosaic trays—a litany of things. I would become completely consumed and lose track of time. Creating things nourished my soul. It still does.” Upon becoming an empty nester years later—a defining period in her life—Kuppersmith looked inward and decided to return to her artistic roots. Thanks to her antique collecting parents, she had always loved colorful vintage posters and fruits and vegetable labels,

“An Alfa Romeo van sits in the foreground with the Duomo and rolling hills of Italy in the background,” explains Kuppersmith. “After increasing the contrast and making some additional edits to the original high-quality image, I added 24,000 crystals in 35 different colors and nine different sizes. I want the crystals to enhance a piece, not take it over.” Using Swarovski crystals in a variety of sizes and colors allows Kuppersmith latitude to create depth, shading, detail, and nuance. She likens the process to that of a portrait artist mixing paint colors. Once she applied the process to larger, more intricate pieces, the possibilities became endless. “My newest technique allows me to elevate a client’s personal photographs into unique, meaningful pieces of art,” says Kuppersmith. “After converting color photos to black and

white, I recreate spotlights of color in a photo editing program. Then, the crystal application process begins with my palette of more than 120 colors, many with differing effects.” Take, for example, the photo of a young couple in Beirut. Their daughter brought the image to Kuppersmith, telling the story of her parents who fell in love, emigrated to America, and have now been married for 58 years. “It had become a treasured family photo of when the parents first met,” notes Kuppersmith, who individually applied 9,000 crystals in 25 various colors and eight sizes to the image. “The daughter gifted it to her parents and now it will stay in their family forever. It was such an honor to create this piece, and I felt so connected to this family and the couple’s beautiful love story.” Kuppersmith has since memorialized album covers, reproductions of vintage posters, travel landscapes, cartoon characters, and more. What she would like to do next is continue working with photographs to further refine her technique, explore new contemporary and classic applications for her work, and create original artwork with her own photography. “Each piece is so special and brings me so much joy to create,” says Kuppersmith. “I think that the most meaningful way to honor my mom is by taking my work to the next level.” For more information, visit nikcrystalart.com or follow Kuppersmith @nik.crystal.art on Instagram.

NORTH SHORE FOODIE

RUSSIAN SALAD I laughed when I saw it. Delightedly chortled, more like, to see that the New York Times was running a recipe story featuring that thousands-ofrenditions Slavic home food: Russian Salad. I’d just confessed my love for the stuff the day before to a friend, as if whispering a guilty pleasure. And now the Times had legitimized it. Classically a mosaic of colorful and carefully diced carrot and potato, plus peas and ham, bathed in sour cream and mayo, I’d long ago found making variations on the Russian Salad theme to be a “treaty” way to eat veg. I make it using everything from trimmed stalks of broccoli (steamed the tiniest bit to tender them) or with celery root, jicama, radish, kohlrabi, and maybe a little cheese, skipping any meat inclusions entirely. But the classic version is good, too. Near my house, Russian Salad is everywhere. Just travel up the road in Skokie-Evanston to the various mom-and-pop grocers and you’ll find it ready made both plain and fancy. Layered in clear bowls with piped swirls of cream on top, the fancy versions look like frilly parfaits. As it turns out, fancy is actually a throw-back. The salad’s genesis was quite gourmet. Food historians place its origins in Moscow where a French chef named Lucien Olivier served it starting in the 1860s at the Hermitage restaurant, mixing in everything from caviar and crawfish tails, to capers and veal tongue. Oh, and Lucien slathered his in Provencal dressing. Post Russian Revolution, the salad took on the proletariat stylings that survive today. With a nod to Olivier, my version of the current classic dolls things up a bit with home-made mayo, sour cream, dill, and quail eggs. Plus, pickled beets that you mix in at the very end. My recipe also relies—as the New York Times version does—on careful, even dicing. Trimming and cutting the ingredients to uniform size makes for good balance, mouth feel and presentation. RECIPE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS

SERVES 6 TO 8

INGREDIENTS FOR RUSSIAN SALAD • 4 medium-sized potatoes, peeled and cut into ¼-inch cubes • ½ bag baby peeled carrots, (look for nice chubby ones) each cut lengthwise into four strips and then diced into small pieces • 1 cup cornichons or baby garlic dill pickles, diced into ¼-inch pieces • 1 cup pickled beets, drained of juice, diced into ¼-inch pieces • ½ lb. good quality boiled ham, diced into ¼-inch cubes • 1 Tbsp finely snipped fresh dill • ½ cup good quality mayonnaise OR ½ cup homemade mayo (recipe follows) • 2 Tbsp. pickle juice • 6 quail eggs • 1 lb. bag frozen peas, thawed

24

• ½ cup sour cream • 1 tsp salt • 1 tsp finely ground fresh cracked black pepper • Sprig of fresh dill for garnish FOR HOMEMADE MAYO (makes 2 1/2 cups) • 2 large eggs (use pasteurized for food safety) • ¼ tsp salt • 1 Tablespoon sugar • 1 ¼ teaspoons mustard powder • ½ teaspoon paprika • pinch of celery salt • 1/8 teaspoon white pepper • 1/3 cup white vinegar • 2 cups vegetable oil, divided

METHOD Set five medium-sized bowls and one large bowl on your work surface. If using homemade mayonnaise, make that first. In a 1 quart container, combine all mayonnaise ingredients except the oil. Add ¼ cup of the oil. Using an immersion blender, blender or food processor blend this mixture for three minutes. Slowly add remaining oil in a steady stream until the mayonnaise has whipped into fluffy consistency. Refrigerate. MAKE RUSSIAN SALAD Using care and aiming for consistent ¼-inch cube size, dice the peeled potatoes, carrots, pickles, beets and ham, placing each in its own separate bowl once diced. Place potatoes in heavy-bottomed pot; cover with water to 2 inches above the surface of the potatoes. Heat to slow boil over medium heat. Once just fork tender, scoop potatoes out of the boiling

water and into the large bowl with a slotted spoon. Leave the boiling water in the pot on the stove top. Add 1/2 cup mayo, pickle juice and dill to the warm potatoes in the large bowl.Add the diced carrot to the boiling water and simmer until just tender. Scoop cooked carrot out with slotted spoon and add to the potato mixture. Add quail eggs to the boiling water, lower to a gentle simmer and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove eggs and run under very cold water for two minutes. Set aside. Once cool, peel eggs. Reserve one egg to use as garnish on top of the finished salad. Chop remaining eggs and add to the salad. Stir in the ham, peas and pickle. Add sour cream. Season with salt and pepper. Slice the reserved boiled quail egg in half and arrange on top of salad in serving dish. Add sprig of dill. To serve, present the beets at the table with the salad and allow guests to mix in as desired. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

MOTHER’S WAY INDELIBLE MEMORIES OF AMY NEWMAN’S LATE, KINDHEARTED MOTHER, PAM, INSPIRED HER TO FORM FAMILIES HELPING FAMILIES CHICAGOLAND AND BOOST THOUSANDS IN NEED. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

A young Amy Newman was shopping in a department store with her mother, Pam, when Pam and a salesclerk engaged in a lengthy conversation decades ago. The friendly chat ended. A curious Amy then reconnected with her mother, looked up, and asked, “Why, Mommy? Why were you talking with that lady?” “Because,” a smiling Pam replied, “she needed to talk to someone. So I listened.” Typical Pam, wonderful at every turn and the popular teacher and counselor at William Howard Taft High School in Chicago. Patient Pam. Caring Pam. “The nicest person ever,” Newman, now 46 and a teacher at Glenwood Elementary School in Waukegan, says of her mother, who died in 2011. “Funny, sweet, a great storyteller. You were drawn to her. She volunteered at The ARK (a Chicagobased social service organization) and did all kinds of things for others, because giving back was important to her.” Newman’s mother was on her mind when she decided to launch Families Helping Families Chicagoland (FHFC) in 2015. Less than two years later the charitable organization—based at Newman’s home in Gurnee—received 501(c)(3) status. FHFC works with social service agencies and schools in Lake and Cook counties to meet the needs of children and families experiencing homelessness, poverty, food insecurity, and other challenges. Newman, who grew up in Glenview and attended Glenbrook South High School, had never witnessed poverty until she saw it in one of her Glenwood classrooms, up close and … heartbreaking. It shook her. It also catapulted her to action. “It surprised me,” recalls Newman, FHFC’s founder/president. “The city of Waukegan, it’s only 30 or so miles from Glenview, practically down the street from the world I lived in—a bubble—as a child and a teen. Some of the students I taught didn’t have shoes, didn’t have winter coats, didn’t have school supplies. Their stomachs hurt because they hadn’t eaten breakfast. Some of them stuffed their backpacks with extra food after lunch so they’d have something to eat for dinner. “What I was hearing from my students concerned me. You know how kids are—so open and honest, saying it like it is. I immediately thought, ‘What can I do to help?’ ” Newman reached out to her friends and informed them of the plight of her students. They responded like her mother would have: quickly and kindly. Friends donated gym shoes and coats and money for field trips. Newman bought books for her students and told each, “Read it and keep it.” She then came up with countless other ways to honor her mother. land Park-based BellaRu Catering to give fresh food to more than 1,000 families; helped Puerto Rican victims (the sister of a North Shore man and her two children) of Hurricane Maria by providing housing in Lake County and a wide variety of essential items; made birthdays and holidays better for families in need; donated blankets and clothes and phone chargers to residents displaced by home fires and later worked with nurses to make sure the suddenly homeless wouldn’t be medication-less for long; and met other immediate needs—within 48 hours—of those in the throes of other crises. “The needs of families in our communities have risen dramatically since the start of the pandemic,” Newman says, adding FHFC’s allvolunteer board has relied primarily on social media to drive its philanthropic efforts since its inception. “We’ve been around for about five years now, and you know what it felt like in 2020? It was like we’d been gearing up all those years to be ready for the many challenges that accompanied Covid-19. Children had to adjust to a number of drastic changes last year, remote learning emerging as the biggest. Their parents had to deal with changes, too. “Guess what hasn’t changed?” she adds. “Families needing immediate assistance. We want to be there for them; we have to be there for them. There’s endless joy in banding together and showing those in need how many people care about them.” Newman’s father, Mark, also taught, instructing media communications students at KennedyKing College in Chicago. Amy, who had known for years that she wanted to teach for a living, became a lead teacher in the Titan Tots Preschool at Glenbrook South High School and, as a fourthyear student in the school’s Child Development Program, taught second-graders four times a week at St. Catherine Laboure Catholic School in Glenview. An art activity—threading strings through

holes of pieces of paper to make animals—failed, but her on-the-fly Plan B—creating thin books, with those pieces of paper— halted the students’ teardrops and transformed looks of frustration into sustained looks of animation. “My parents were changing kids’ lives for the better every day,” says Newman, who majored in sociology at Illinois State University and earned her Master of Art in Teaching at National Louis University’s Wheeling campus. “It’s in my

Amy Newman blood, teaching. I’ve always loved kids. And I absolutely love watching them learn and grow.” Newman landed her first teaching gig at nowdefunct Lincoln Elementary School in Highland Park, filling in for six months for a third-grade teacher on leave. Her first stint at Glenwood Elementary lasted from 1998-2013; she returned to the classroom at the Waukegan school before the start of the 2020-2021 academic year. She also commutes from her digs near Six Flags Great America to Highland Park to tutor children.

The stepmother of Emily, 16, and the mother of 7-year-old twins Brooke and AJ with her husband of 11 years, Brian, Amy got to know her future husband initially at a Speed Dating activity. Later, the pair connected via eharmony. com. But their courtship didn’t commence until after Amy crossed paths with Brian at a singles event. “You know what they say about ‘the third time,’ ” Amy says, chortling. “I remember seeing him at the singles event and going, ‘Oh, there’s that guy … again.’ I couldn’t be happier now, having him as my husband. What a wonderful man. He’s smart, funny, kind, so giving.” And quite adept at dancing, particularly at home. How else would Brian Newman be able to navigate nimbly around islands of Amazon boxes—sometimes up to 30—strewn across the floor, the ones containing essential goods for others and addressed to Families Helping Families Chicagoland?
