There’s a reason journalists often go on to have successful careers as fiction writers. Both require curiosity, attention to detail, and a desire to spin a good yarn. It helps to have lived a story of your own that’s not all that different from the stories you write. Lisa Barr was raised initially in Northbrook and attended Solomon Shechter Day School of Metropolitan Continued on PG 13
Deerfield author Lisa Barr's latest novel is being made into a film starring actress Sharon Stone.

“I truly cannot put into words how great our experience was working with Cory Albiani. He guided us effortlessly through both the search for our new home, as well as the purchase. Cory’s is a consummate professional, but also brings a nice calm and easy demeanor to what could be normally a stressful home buying/selling process. Despite the final purchase hitting a couple legal snags prior to the close, Cory was always there to answer questions and to help us move the transaction forward. Hands down, we would recommend Cory Albiani to anyone looking to buy or sell a home in the suburbs or downtown.” -Douglas & Amanda Baker

Chicago and Glenbrook North High School before transferring to New Trier Township High School. She finished her bachelor's degree at the University of Illinois before getting her master’s at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. Barr then went to work briefly for legendary Chicago PR sage Margie Korshak. During her brief time working for Margie Korshak Inc., she escorted Howard Schultz, CEO of a little upstart coffee company called Starbucks, around to various radio stations in Chicago so he could promote his idea of how gourmet coffee was going to be the next big thing. After working as Managing Editor of Today’s Chicago Woman, Barr was itching for an experience abroad, She packed up her suitcase, bicycle, and laptop and took off for Israel to work as a Managing Editor for
Minister Yitzhak Rabin, PLO Leader Yasser Arafat, and President Bill Clinton, on the South Lawn of the White House. She ended up coming back to Chicago and was at the Chicago Sun-Times for a couple of years before she started her fiction writing career in earnest. Her first book, Fugitive Colors, was published in 2013, and a second, The Unbreakables, followed in 2019. The Chicago debut for her latest novel, Woman on Fire, took place at the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center on March 10. “I really started writing my first manuscript at 23 and it didn't go anywhere, but I’ve always been a ‘never give up and take no for an answer type of person’,” Barr says. “So, I would work at my day job as a journalist and then at night I would work on my fiction,” Barr says her work as a journalist contributes much to her fiction writing. “I feel like my journalism training makes me a much stronger writer of fiction, especially when it comes to suspense and historical fiction,” she says. “It really taught me plot and tempo and how to get in and out of a chapter and kind of leave a cliffhanger.” One of the themes that run through all three of her books is art—stolen art, in particular. Her first book, Fugitive Colors, was about stolen art from the perspective of the artist. Barr says it was an intensive

the Jerusalem Post, where she launched the paper’s first weekend section. “It was the best job of my life. It was fascinating and terrifying. I kind of left everything,” Barr says. “The challenge was exciting, and I was covering everything from profiling visiting presidents and prime ministers to covering terrorism.” One of Barr’s biggest stories was, upon returning to the U.S. for a family event, stopping in Washington, D.C. to cover the iconic handshakes between Israeli Prime THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
book that took nearly 10 years to write, including four years of research traveling out
of the country to do interviews. “My middle book was kind of sexy women’s fiction, a real departure, but my main character was also an artist, a sculptor from Chicago,” she says. “For my latest one, I was really itching to go back to my stolen-art roots. When you're a journalist and you really research something you kind of become a quasi-expert, and for this one I wanted to do it from the painting’s perspective.” The plot of Woman on Fire centers on a journalist for the Chicago Sun-Times, Jules Roth, who for her first assignment is tasked by the paper’s lead investigative reporter to track down a painting that was stolen by the Nazis nearly 75 years earlier. A renowned shoe designer, Ellis Baum, wants the painting, but his days are numbered. Meanwhile, in Europe, a wellheeled French gallerist is also on the hunt for the painting, the most famous work by legendary Expressionist Ernst Engel. Romance and intrigue ensue. With stolen Nazi loot often in today’s headlines, Barr wanted to write a story that connects with today.
“I wanted to do something really strong, really provocative, that relates to stolen art, using all my background as a journalist to answer questions really directly,” she says. “I'm kind of a news junkie so whatever I write in my fiction, the kernel comes from a news story.” The book has been optioned for a movie and it was confirmed recently that the actor Sharon Stone has agreed to play the lead role. "Sharon Stone is the original Woman on Fire,” Barr says. “The book is filled with strong, fiery women, and I knew in my heart that Sharon—brilliant and dynamic—is the right fit to bring my novel to the big screen." Woman on Fire has received a starred review from Publisher’s Weekly and Katie Couric has listed the book as one of her top reads for 2022. Barr says she knew she was on to something while writing it. She believes that when she has a great story she just “feels it.” It’s a physical feeling. Each of the two main characters—both female— reflect her strong and fiery personality. “This was the one I had to write no matter what and I'm really excited about it because I think it combines everything that I'm about—knowing history, and strong, risky journalistic pursuits,” she says. “It's a woman versus woman showdown, and it's a good match. It was actually very fun to write that aspect of the story.” Woman on Fire by Lisa Barr was published by HarperCollins Publishers and is available for purchase at harpercollins.com and other online booksellers.

BRIGHT FUTURES AFTER HOLDING ITS ANNUAL GALA VIRTUALLY THE PAST TWO YEARS, HYDE PARK DAY SCHOOL WILL BE HOSTING IT IN PERSON THIS YEAR AT ROCKWELL ON THE RIVER IN CHICAGO. BY MITCH HURST THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Hyde Park Day School (HPDS) will host its annual gala, “There’s No Place Like HPDS,” on April 8 at Rockwell on the River in Chicago to raise funds for scholarships for students. The school, with campuses in Northfield, in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood, and Lemont, serves bright kids with learning disabilities. “We give our students remediation and selfadvocacy skills and prepare them for the transition back to traditional classrooms,” says Dr. Casey Crnich, Executive Director of HPDS. “Our model is we have kids who struggle in some aspect of schooling, usually reading, writing, or math. They come to us, and we work on their strengths as well as areas that they are challenged.” Crnich joined HPDS a year after it was started in an old, converted chapel more than 20 years ago with just four students. It grew quickly and in 2004 the campus in Northfield opened its doors. Today, it serves more than 170 students across its three campuses. The gala on April 8 will raise funds for the
Bright Futures Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships for needy students. The

many parents. “Our staffing costs are really expensive which makes tuition very expensive,” Crnich says. “So, the whole purpose of this event is to support scholarships for families who would not otherwise be able to afford the tuition.” Crnich says the school provided $474,000 worth of scholarships this year and the gala is a critical source of fund-
ing, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars each year. “This is our flagship fundraiser. We'll do other, smaller fundraisers throughout the year and an annual appeal, but this really is an opportunity for the community to come together,” he says. “It's also very focused on raising funds for kids.” The gala on April 8 will feature a live and silent auction of items such as trip getaways, show tickets, and one-of-a-kind art pieces. Cocktail hour begins at 6:30 p.m. with dinner and presentations at 8 p.m.. This year, the school will be honoring outgoing principals Evan Hammontree of Chicago and Jay Smith of Lemont. Crnich says that while the primary purpose of the gala is to raise critical funds for kids to be able to attend school, it’s also a good time. “We’re there to raise money for scholarships, but it's a really fun night with good music, good food, and good drinks and an opportunity for families who have been impacted by learning disabilities to come together and celebrate the kids. we work with.” For more information about the Hyde Park Day School annual gala, There’s No Place Like HPDS, visit 2022hpdsgala.givesmart.com.

What motivated you to get into Real Estate? Jacqueline: Having grown up in a “real estate family” with my father as a luxury home builder, real estate has always been part of who I am. Much of my childhood was spent on job sites + living through renovations, and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else! Stephanie: I’ve always been obsessed with looking at houses and honestly, Jacqueline motivated me to make a career out of it! I worked in corporate ad sales for 14 years and once I had children, the travel schedule really took a toll on me. Lake Forest Plungers was born. “There’s a good 30 people who show up at some point throughout the week, many of whom show up multiple times,” Carter says. “I’m there between three and five times a week.” It’s difficult to pinpoint when “polar bear plunges” were invented, but some sources point to civilizations dating back to ancient Greece and Rome understanding the benefits of dipping one’s body in water of varying temperatures, both cold and hot. Research shows it can boost cardiovascular circulation, strengthen the immune system, improve mental health, and increase energy levels.
“That’s a byproduct of the experience that it attracts this group of people who are authentic, vulnerable, and supportive. That part is just cool.” Carter says it’s necessary to the process, especially on very cold day when conditions may be icy, to get one’s mind right and ready. “Instead of thinking, ‘This is going to stink’,” says Carter. “You walk into the water thinking, ‘This is going to do great things for me. I’m going to prove to myself I can do something that is challenging, and I’m going to conquer my fear.’” Carter says conquering one’s fears, first thing in the morning, leads one to think about what else they might be able to achieve the rest of the day. That the group got started during the pandemic was a fortunate irony. “I have four kids and at the time one of them was having a tough time,” Carter says. “He to-

got in shape and got better emotionally. All of a sudden he’s training for a marathon.” One value Lake Forest Plungers live by is that the group remains open to anyone. Aspiring plungers just have to show up Lake Forest Beach. The group posts its schedule on its Instagram page and there’s also plenty of word of mouth. It’s a welcoming bunch. “Whenever a new person comes down, someone kind of takes them under their wing and works with them on mindset and reminds them to put their hands under their armpits so they don’t freeze their fingertips,” Carter says. “We love when new people come. It’s very rewarding to watch people doing it for the first time and see the effect it has on them.” Carter says very few people take the plunge just once. Most come back. And plungers who travel find a local watering hole. It’s a powerful and rewarding routine “Over Thanksgiving our crew traveled. They went all over the country and many people were plunging from wherever they were,” Carter says. “From Southern California to Wisconsin and Minnesota, it becomes a part of your day.” Follow Lake Forest Plungers on Instagram @lfplungers. BALLYMALOE IRISH LAMB STEW BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Cherished recipes are like ripples, each one an echo of the wavemaker that first broke the surface. This Ballymaloe House lamb stew is the 1940s original that started ripples of stews to follow. A version of it
was later published in Gourmet magazine (1960s) and then again in Ruth Reichl’s 2004 volume featuring six-decades of Gourmet recipe bests. Rather than look to the later versions, when a woman wrote me in search of the recipe, I reached out to Darina Allen, head of the Ballymaloe Cookery School in Shanagarry, County Cork, Ireland, and a member of the fam-
ily running Ballymaloe House Hotel and Restaurant. According to Darina, the recipe was given to her mother-in-law Myrtle Allen by neighbor Madge Dolan in the 1940s. It became a staple at both Ballymaloe House and at the Ballymaloe Cookery School. While lamb stew is extremely common in Ireland with regional variations from
county to county (no carrots in Northern Ireland; barley added for extra sustenance in other places) this version differed from others of the period because the meat and vegetables are browned in hot fat before stewing, making the finished dish more flavorful. The stew is delicious served up immediately after you make it and is also good warmed up the next day.
INGREDIENTS
• 3 lbs 1-inch-thick shoulder lamb chops OR substitute 1-inch-thick slices lamb leg • 1 lb carrots, peeled and cut into 2 -inch pieces (about 8 medium) • 1 lb fresh white pearl onions, peeled and whole • Salt and freshly-ground black pepper • 1 ½ lbs baby potatoes, peeled • Sprig of fresh thyme • 1 ½ Tbsp unsalted butter • 2 Tbsp flour • 1 Tbsp minced flat leaf parsley (plus a bit extra for garnish) • 1 Tbsp minced chives (plus a bit extra for garnish) • 2 ½ cups lamb stock (or unsalted chicken stock)

METHOD
With oven rack at center position, preheat oven to 350 degrees. Divide each chop in half at natural division (they’ll split lengthwise, right in the middle). Trim visible fat. batches. Transfer one layer of the browned chops to an enameled cast iron casserole or Dutch oven. Grind more pepper and salt over all. Toss the onions and carrots in the hot fat remaining in the skillet. Layer half of the carrots and onions over the first layer of meat. Grind more pepper and salt over. Layer the rest of the chops over the vegetables; top with the remaining carrots and onion. Grind
more pepper and salt over. Arrange peeled baby potatoes on top. De-glaze the skillet with the lamb or chicken stock, scraping any meat or veggie bits loose. Pour all into the casserole (or Dutch oven.) Add the sprig of thyme. Heat to boiling on the stove top. Cover. Transfer the covered casserole to the preheated oven and roast for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Remove from oven. Pour

off cooking broth and reserve. Skim off and discard grease from the the surface of the liquid. Reserve cooking broth. Over low heat, melt butter in frying pan; add flour and brown a bit. Whisk in cooking broth until thickened into a gravy. Pour gravy back over the meat and vegetables in the pot. Garnish with chives and parsley. Serve piping hot, with crusty bread. MR. WILMETTE LOCAL HISTORY BUFF AND FORMER VILLAGE OF WILMETTE PRESIDENT JOHN JACOBY IS RELISHING HIS ROLE AS A CO-CHAIR OF WILMETTE’S SESQUICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION COMMITTEE. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
Did you hear the one about the Civil War veteran from Wilmette who headed to work one day, lunch pail in hand, and went missing for more than 20 years? John Jacoby did, and he’s about to flesh out the true story for an audience of one at a Starbucks near Loyola Academy in Wilmette. “Frank Alles,” the former Village of Wilmette President begins, “had a bunch of kids, all young, when he disappeared. Months went by, then years, then decades. His family thought he might be in California. A child of his traveled to California and found Frank working in an orange grove. He then brought his father home. “Frank’s wife,” Jacoby continues, “greeted him at the door, saying, ‘Dinner’s ready.’ Frank told her, ‘I’m awfully hungry.’” Jacoby, 80 years old and a Wilmette resident since 1974, has a ravenous appetite for such stories and for all things Wilmette. For 10 years he wrote columns—“strange stories, amazing stories, and human interest stories, all about Wilmette,” he notes—for the Wilmette Beacon, which folded right before Jacoby’s completed 500th column would have been published. He also penned a book, Wilmette at 150 (Amika Press, 403 pages), in 2021, a year ahead of the village’s Sesquicentennial Celebration and a year after he was named one of four former village presidents to co-chair the 14-member committee overseeing the yearlong celebration. Jacoby’s book is a collection of illuminating stories that feature and celebrate the people, places, and events that have shaped the village named in honor of Archange and Antoine Ouilmette. “I love the community’s history and what distinguishes Wilmette from other North Shore communities,” Jacoby, a retired labor lawyer, says. “I’ve always been interested in the character of the village—and the village’s characters. Researching Wilmette history still interests me. (Bank robber) Baby Face Nelson has a connection to Wilmette: He was on the FBI’s most wanted list when he sought refuge in Wilmette, where he was killed. “His body,” Jacoby adds, “was dumped, conveniently, at a cemetery.” Look for Wilmette, incorporated on September 19, 1872, to come alive like never before on September 10, 2022, when Wilmette’s 150th birthday party will be staged at and near the Village Center (1101 Lake Avenue).

That community festival will cap a year-long fete that began with a speaker series ( Jacoby served as one of the orators in January), followed by a winter carnival. Other observances in 2022 will include art shows and projects to enhance public spaces in the community, along with 150th anniversarythemed events sponsored by the Wilmette Park District, the Wilmette Public Library, local school districts, the Chamber of Commerce, the Wilmette Historical Museum, and Wilmette’s
pair or Rotary Clubs, among other civic groups. “All of it will give the community a shot in the arm,” Jacoby says. “Our purpose, as a committee, is to engage and unify people through events,

and to buttress a sense of community that exists in Wilmette and strive to expand it along the way. When I think of Wilmette, I think of the wonderful schools, the educated folks and intelligent conversations, the beautiful lakefront, the excellent facilities. People in our close-knit neighborhoods are nice, genuinely nice. “And extremely kind people,” he adds, “have a way of generating more kindness.” Jacoby, who grew up in Western Springs, produced copy for the student newspaper at Lyons Township High School in LaGrange before becoming the publication’s editor in his senior year. The promotion forced Jacoby to delete his plan to become a second-year cross country runner for the Lions. “I had a very good journalism teacher (Katherine Keefe) in high school,” Jacoby says. “She loved her job. She was very patient but had high standards. Journalism prepared me well for the writing I did as a lawyer (at the Chicago

firm now known as Vedder Price, PC). I had to present the facts coherently in my post-hearing briefs. My philosophy was to write a brief as a speaker would tell a coherent story.” Jacoby’s father, Arthur, died at the age of 38, leaving his wife, Ruth, to raise John and his older sister on a junior high school teacher’s salary. John was 7 when his father departed. John Jacoby completed his undergraduate and law school degrees in a combined six years at the University of Illinois in Champaign. John and his wife, Muggsy, lived in Hinsdale before moving to Wilmette 48 years ago. Muggsy grew up in tiny Ladd, a village in Bureau County, Illinois. The couple raised Suzy, Sarah, Matt, and Mazy, all of whom played tennis at New Trier High School. Suzy was a two-time state runner-up in doubles for the Trevians. The four netters had an in-house tennis instructor in their left-handed father, a steady, tireless baseliner who had founded the Wilmette Men’s Tennis Association. Jacoby spent countless hours on the courts—mainly those at Thornwood Park in Wilmette— with his children, conducting a variety of drills. Jacoby stressed control more than anything else to his charges. “I wanted them to develop consistency,” recalls Jacoby, the grandfather of 13, including New Trier twins and George Washington University lacrosse recruits Emma and Grace Curry. “My challenge to them was, ‘OK, how many groundstrokes in a row can you keep in play?’ We did a lot of counting.” What’s still ticking? The clock Jacoby received after serving his two terms (1989-1997) as Village of Wilmette president. Among the projects he supervised during his tenure was the creation of the Wilmette Veterans Memorial, which recognizes the 110 Wilmette men and women who perished while serving the U.S. military. “I plugged it, got the ball rolling,” Jacoby says. “We formed a committee and found a designer, Martin Wolf. Martin did it for free.” Similar altruism spurs Jacoby and his fellow Sesquicentennial Celebration Committee cochairs—Christopher Canning, Nancy Canafax, and Vern Squires—in 2022. “Wilmette residents are proud of a lot of their village’s characteristics,” Jacoby says. “Those distinctions deserve to be celebrated. Unfortunately, there have been recent diversions and distractions and realities, such as social media and COVID, that have divided communities. “This year, Wilmette’s 150th, is an opportunity to honor our special village and bring people together at the same time.” For more information about the Sesquicentennial Celebration for Wilmette events, visit wilmette150.org.
