FIGURES OF FREEDOM HIGHLAND PARK ARTIST SUSAN BLOCK’S ABSTRACT PAINTINGS ARE DYNAMIC CELEBRATIONS OF LIFE. BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Preparing for the opening of her current exhibition at The Art Center Highland Park, Susan Block was searching for the right words to best describe her paintings. Freedom and transcendence were two good ones. “And then the word transmogrify, popped into my head,” says Block. Unsure of the definition, she grabbed a dictionary. “I was thrilled to find it means: ‘To transform in a surprising or magical manner’.” It’s a perfect description for how painted strokes of color transform into finished works of art both surprising and magical. It’s also a good word for what happens to a viewer standing in a gallery surrounded by Block’s large-scale, vibrant abstracts. The experience is … well, transmogrifying. For Block, expressions of freedom, transcendence and transmogrification have been part of her experience since she was born. Her mother Dorothy Wolf, a talented Highland Park sculptor, “always had a sculpture she was working on right on the kitchen table,” says Block. “She’d give us kids pieces of clay to create with as she worked, and then we’d all just push everything to one side when it was time to eat.” Wolf sculpted from nude models, which gave Block the opportunity to draw from her first life model when she was only 5 or 6. “I didn’t even notice that the person wasn’t Continued on PG 10

clothed,” she recalls. “People are so freaked out by the human body, but it’s always been almost quotidian to me.” Then, as now, Block works toward, “a really good drawing,” first, finding the energy and essence in the movement—ultimately capturing the lifeforce and dynamism of the model in a painting that doesn’t trap the viewer, but takes them beyond. “For me, painting is about movement and line and space, breaking out and breaking free,” she says. Since she was a child, Block’s expressiveness found myriad outlets. She studied music, theater, and dance, and quickly developed a passion for the stage. “I was that kid who was in every play the school put on,” she says. Pursuing this passion in college, Block started out as a theater major at Syracuse University. But meeting the love of her life, Dr. Steven Bloch, when she was just a sophomore (he is now one of the North Shore’s leading plastic surgeons), she married right after graduation. Children came soon after, and as Steven moved through his training and residency, which took the family from New York to Wisconsin and finally Chicago, Susan divided her time between parenting, art, and theater. She took art classes at the University of Wisconsin and was represented by galleries for her life-size sculptures, and her paintings. Back in Chicago, she got an MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in sculpture. And, after picking up the theater thread by studying with Dan LaMorte at Chicago’s Center Theater, Susan started landing roles in plays.

meant that Susan had to choose between painting and acting. Painting won out. Block’s painting work has taken many forms. Deeply impacted by the tragedy of 9/11, Block wanted to create a body of work that would signify both “America” and “Freedom.” For her, childhood summers on her family’s beautiful land in far Northwest Wisconsin were idyllic, full of both freedom—and horses. This found expression in the huge body of abstract horse paintings for which she is well known. Then, her collage paintings brought her representation at galleries throughout the world. Her current shift to painting abstract nudes represents growth in a new direction and is also a circle back to the freedom and natural giftings that were a part of her early childhood. Larger than life, the selection of two dozen abstracts are boldly expressive works with a lot of movement. “I don’t like static things,” Block says, adding that she prefers “dynamic and free. It’s always about freedom.” Block’s work will be on view at The Art Center Highland Park through April 17 as part of the current exhibition, “THEM: All People Everywhere,” also featuring the ceramic figure sculpture work of artist Robin Power.

STEAK AND STOUT STEW

One of my boys loves deep dark flavors. If you want that in a good stew, steak and stout are the perfect ingredients. And when using a good grade of meat, you don’t really need the super long slow roast that you need with lesser cuts, so you can make this on the stovetop in a Dutch oven. With the pandemic still lingering, we may not be able to gather in crowded pubs right now, but this hearty stew is a pub-worthy comfort that will bring cheer to your home crew. Made with Guinness, sirloin steak, and carrot and onion to mellow the stout, it’s full of deep rich flavors.

SERVES 8

INGREDIENTS 4 pounds sirloin steak, cut into very small, half-inch pieces Salt and freshly cracked pepper 5 Tbsp olive oil, divided 2 large yellow onions, cored, peeled and cut into eighths, pieces separated 1 lb. bag peeled baby carrots (OR 4 whole carrots,) peeled and sliced on the diagonal into rounds 2 Tbsp tomato paste 6 cloves of garlic, chopped 1 24-ounce (1-½ pound) bag petite yellow or red potatoes, quartered 3-½ cups beef stock (low sodium preferred) 1-½ 11.2 oz bottles Guinness Draught stout Four sprigs fresh thyme leaves, stems discarded 1 bay leaf 1 Tbsp minced parsley

14

RECIPE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS

METHOD In a large bowl, salt and pepper the steak, massaging it in to coat well. Set aside. In a 7-quart Dutch oven over medium heat on your stovetop, warm 2 Tbsp of the oil. Add onion and saute, stirring occasionally, for three minutes. Add the carrot, garlic and tomato paste; stir, and cook for another five minutes. Add chopped potatoes and 1-½ cups beef stock; stir and cook for five minutes. Cover and cook for another 10 minutes until potatoes

can be pierced easily with a fork. Remove lid. Add remaining 2 cups beef stock, one bottle of stout, half of the thyme leaves, and bay leaf. Turn heat to medium low and simmer. While the Dutch oven is simmering, mix ½ cup of flour with the chopped pieces of steak, tossing to coat well. In a saute pan over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon of the oil. Saute the steak in batches, adding oil as needed, until steak bits are cooked through and tender. Add each cooked batch of steak, including any scraped

bits of flour and meat from the bottom of the saute pan, to the Dutch oven, stirring in. Simmer, stirring occasionally until flavors have melded well and sauce has thickened a bit (about a half hour.) Before serving, add another half bottle of stout. Simmer for 10 more minutes and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. To serve, ladle into bowls and sprinkle with minced parsley and remaining fresh thyme leaves. Serve with that last half bottle of stout in your glass, and some nice crusty bread. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

SELLER’S MARKET MORE BUYERS THAN HOUSES IN THE MARKET The 2020 housing market was a year of extremes. In February of last year there were approximately 300 homes listed for sale in Lake Forest and 120 homes were available in Lake Bluff. Inventory levels declined precipitously since the onset of the pandemic. Currently, the supply of available single-family homes has dropped to just 120 in Lake Forest and 24 in Lake Bluff. Demand increased dramatically last summer and continued through Fall and into the Winter fueled by historically low mortgage rates and an exodus from more densely populated urban areas. These extremely low levels of available inventory have created what is often referred to as a Seller’s Market. A market like this creates a unique opportunity for homeowners who are contemplating a sale. We are seeing strong price appreciation in many price ranges.

ANGEL IN THE DETAILS CONCERN FOR DAUGHTER AND OTHERS WITH SENSORY PROCESSING CHALLENGES IMPELS DINA LEWIS TO CREATE MINOR DETAILS CLOTHING LINE. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

Dina Lewis’s daughter, Hannah, was 5 when she stood ankle-deep in the Atlantic Ocean during a vacation in Bermuda several years ago. The child clutched her long hair and wrung the water out of it. Hannah then wrung, wrung, and wrung some more. “What are you doing?” a puzzled Dina, standing nearby, asked. “Giving water back to the fish,” a straight-faced Hannah replied. Typical, up-to-all-good Hannah, now 9 and a third-grader at Bennett Day School in Chicago. “The way her mind works … I love it,” Hannah’s 53-year-old mother says today. “She’s funny and creative, so kind, and environmentally concerned. She yells at me if I leave the lights on at home. She also codes her own games. “Hannah,” Lewis adds, “is my IT department.” And Dina Lewis recently became Hannah’s official clothier with the launch of her Minor Details luxury clothing line for children ages 2 to 12. Hannah has a sensory processing disorder, a condition in which the brain has trouble receiving and responding to information that comes in through the senses. Sensory processing issues, according to the Child Mind Institute, are often first recognized during the toddler years, when parents notice that a child has an unusual aversion to noise, light, shoes that are deemed too tight, and clothes that are irritating. On most mornings, for years, New York-born Hannah wanted to escape from her outfit as soon as she got dressed. Pants made her legs itch. Sleeves made her long for sleeveless shirts. Minor Details’ clothes—designed in Chicago and cut and sewn in New York City—are utilitarian and fashionable. Lewis, who collaborated with top-notch designer Lauren Markt and consulted with an occupational therapist, created Minor Details to help reduce anxiety and increase sensory regulation and body awareness for its customers. Its mission is to provide fun, thoughtful, sensory- and earth-friendly clothing that children want to wear. The line—rooted in the concepts of adaptability, connection, empathy, and mad-style—also features upsized “My Adult and Me” versions of the styles. Among the venture’s offerings for children: Tie Dye Snappy Cardigan; Raven Mixed Media Sweatshirt; Rose Brown Next Level Leggings; and Denim Blue Cropped Slouch Pants. Feel ultra comfortable and look super cool at the same time. That’s what Lewis—who lives in the River North neighborhood of Chicago and exercises at the fitness center STRIVE Village in Wilmette—wanted for Hannah and other children with a sensory processing disorder when she envisioned the business in August 2019.

Undergoing cancer treatments failed to interrupt Lewis’s ambitious plans. The initial rollout of Minor Details’ “little edgy, little different” batch of highly sustainable wear is set for March 15, followed by projected drops in

Dina Lewis

May and late August/early September. “Having cancer drove things home for me,” says the now cancer-free Lewis, adding she thinks more than the estimated one in six children is sensory-challenged. “I remember thinking, ‘Wow, this is real.’ It was time for me to live now, be happy, see Minor Details through. “People,” she adds, “are shocked that I’ve made it this far with my clothing line. But I’m fearless. I’m a risk-taker. And I go with my gut, immediately, when I make significant decisions. It’s funny—it takes me more time to decide which pair of shoes I want to buy than it takes me to make the biggest decisions in my life.” Lewis got her sense of humor and entrepreneurial spirit from her late father, Harvey, a University of Michigan graduate who worked in the real estate industry and was brilliant. How bright? He could learn a foreign language on a flight to a country that spoke that language and speak it fluently before plucking his luggage from the plane’s overhead compartment. Dina took off as a business tyke-oon at the age of 7, going door-to-door with her fabric crayons and offering to personalize strangers’ clothes. Remember the oil crises in the 1970s? Lewis certainly does. She sold coffee and donuts to motorists waiting in gas lines. She got hired to deliver newspapers, but that gig lasted only a week. Lewis attended Northfield Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts, where she rocked Madonna-inspired O rings, crossed paths with a younger schoolmate named Uma Thurman, and served as a dorm leader and the student manager of the boys ice hockey team. The goody two shoes had a crush on a boy in two skates.

Speaking of winter sports, Lewis’s 78-yearold mother, Bobbi, skis any chance she gets and thinks nothing of driving four hours to hit her favorite slopes. Bobbi had returned to college at age 50 to study nutrition. Dina Lewis spent two years at St. Lawrence University in New York and later conducted a playwriting workshop at Vassar College in New York and a poetry writing workshop at Bennington College in Vermont. After working as a dog walker, a bike messenger, a dog-coat designer and maker (“Before dog coats were trendy,” she says), and a bartender, she wrote for the magazine Time Out New York. She also dabbled in improv, performing alongside Jon Stewart in New York. Her self-assessment of her stint as a comedian? “I was terrible,” Lewis says. Harvey urged his daughter to enter the field of real estate, and that’s what she did for nearly 20 years. And now this, spearheading Minor Details, a major shift in her life. Fear gripped Lewis at the start of the endeavor, but she embraced it— and cast it aside—quickly. “I like to have a little fear in my life, because it keeps me fresh,” Lewis insists. “I am excited now; have been for a while. I am passionate about Minor Details. It has brought so many wonderful people into my life, including those affiliated with (the social service organization) Chicago Lighthouse. But what thrills me more than anything else is knowing that our clothes will bring relief and eliminate distractions to children who wear them.” For more information about Minor Details, and to shop for a range of its sensory-friendly items, visit minordetailskids.com.
