A young Annie Aggens probably had a hard time falling asleep whenever her father, former geology teacher Lorenz, read aloud from a certain book at bedtime. But not because the Wilmette native and former North Shore Country Day School student was frightened under the covers. Annie was wide-eyed and enthralled while learning all about the exploits of an early 20th century Anglo-Irish hero and a harrowing

adventure from the pages of author Alfred Lansing’s Endurance: Shackleton’s Incredible Voyage. Her two sisters found themselves captivated, too, as Lorenz sat on the northernmost step of a stairwell and shone a flashlight on Lansing’s moving prose. Sir Ernest Shackleton led the ill-fated Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition that saw the sinking of the ship Endurance in the Weddell Sea in 1915 but ended— astonishingly—with Shackleton rescuing his entire crew. The expedition leader and his 27 men

somehow survived months on ice and a diet of fresh water, albatross eggs, seals, and penguins. “When you mention the ship Endurance to adventurers around the world, they get goosebumps,” says Aggens, now director of Wilmette-based PolarExplorers, which was founded in 1993 and creates exceptional and unique adventures for the intrepid traveler and explores the ends of the earth (“and all the cold places in between”). “And Shackleton,” Aggens continues, “was a phenomenal, charismatic leader.” Adds PolarExplorers Founder Rich Continued on PG 2

Sweitzer, also of Wilmette: “They called Shackleton ‘The Boss,’ and his motto was, ‘By endurance we conquer.’” Aggens and Sweitzer had 107 reasons to celebrate wildly on March 9. That’s when Endurance was discovered resting upright some two miles below the surface of the Weddell Sea, near Antarctica, and nearly 107 years after sea ice had consumed the wooden vessel, prompting Shackleton, surrounded by his disheartened crew, to declare, “She’s gone.” In 2015 Aggens and Sweitzer and several other Chicago-area adventurers traveled to South Georgia Island, where Shackleton, with four of his 27 crew members, traversed—after navigating about 800 miles on a narrow lifeboat—during his legendary rescue odyssey that featured help from Chile and a return to ice-covered Elephant Island off the coast of Antarctica. “So exciting,” Aggens says. “Our team got to walk in Shackleton’s footsteps and experience the glaciers and mountain descents that he did. Shackleton is a hero to many of us. “The discovery of Endurance earlier this month, for adventurers everywhere, was the equivalent of the discovery of the Titanic (in 1985),” she adds. Another Wilmette connection to Endurance was the author Lansing, who attended Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism (but did not complete the program) and worked for a Wilmette newspaper before the 1959 publication of Endurance: Shackleton’s Incredible Voyage.

Aggens, passionate to the bone about polar expeditions, might know more about Shackleton than any of his Endurance mates did. She also could teach a riveting course on the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition that began in August 1914 and ended nearly two years later. “Shackleton,” Aggens informs, “had been urged by South Georgia Island whalers not to sail because the sea ice was too heavy. He didn’t take their advice, because he was determined to guide an expedition that left England and traveled to Buenos Aires before heading toward Antarctica. Endurance had two masts, and it was a gorgeous ship. “Endurance,” she adds, “is perhaps the most iconic ship in the history of exploration. It has come to symbolize hope, courage, fortitude, and resilience—all qualities embraced by Sir Ernest Shackleton and his crew.” What they had to endure more than a century ago still stuns former Peace Corps volunteer Sweitzer, who, as a student at Howard Junior High School in Wilmette, learned the Winter Olympics sport of curling in a gym class before enrolling at New Trier East High School in Winnetka. “Once Endurance sank near Antarctica, the 28 men were completely on their own,” Sweitzer says. “How they survived months on the ice, an 800-mile lifeboat journey, and finally a ‘Hail Mary’ crossing of an unmapped, glaciercovered island, all to get help … it’s beyond comprehension.” Shackleton led a total of three British expeditions to the Antarctic. He died of a

HOMEMADE GNOCCHI BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

If you’ve considered, but not yet tried, making fresh pasta at home, pillowy little gnocchi are a great place to start! These tender little nubbins are easy to make and taste good simply buttered and tossed with a bit of grated parmesan or paired with your favorite spaghetti sauce. The soft dough is made with mashed potato and parmesan in the mix. You’ll use your hands to roll it into long ropes, and a sharp knife to cut the ropes into tiny pieces. Before boiling, gnocchi look very much like the butter mints my mom used to put out in candy dishes when company came. Tossed into the boiling salt water, the gnocchi swell, bob to the surface and cook to doneness quickly. For tastiest results, make the gnocchi right after you mix the dough: It doesn’t hold well in the refrigerator.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

• 2 large russet potatoes, peeled and cubed (You will use 1-½ cup of the potatoes, mashed)

Fill cooking pot with potato cubes and cover with water. Over medium high heat, heat water until it just begins to boil. Immediately reduce heat to a simmer, cooking potatoes until fork tender. Strain off water; mash potatoes well. Set aside to cool. Layer two sheet pans with parchment paper and set aside.

• 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour (plus more for rolling out the dough) • 1 tsp salt • ½ tsp finely ground black pepper • 1 large egg • ½ cup whole milk ricotta cheese • ½ cup very finely grated Parmesan • 1 tsp salt for water used to boil the gnocchi

8

In a wide and shallow mixing bowl, sift 1-½ cups of the flour with 1 tsp salt and pepper. Add egg and cheeses. Add 1-½ cup of the cooled mashed potatoes. Stir all together

until everything gathers into a soft, ragged dough. Turn out onto a wellfloured work surface and knead for a bit until you have a nice soft ball of dough. Pat out dough into a rectangle. Cut rectangle into 8 strips. Place ½ cup flour to the side of your work surface. Sprinkle work surface with a bit of the flour and working one piece at a time, roll out each of the strips into long 1-inch-thick ropes using the palms of your hands and a light pressure. Cut each rope into ½-inch pieces and place them on the parchment lined sheet pans, keeping

the gnocchi pieces from touching one another Repeat until all dough is rolled and cut into pieces. Add 1 tsp salt to a large pot of water: heat to boiling. Working in small batches, boil the gnocchi until they bob to the surface and are cooked through. Scoop them out with a slotted spoon or mesh strainer and transfer to colander. To serve, toss gnocchi with a bit of butter, parmesan, salt and pepper, and a sprinkling of herbs, or pair with your favorite sauce. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

PROFUSION OF INCLUSION FUNDRAISER CO-CHAIR SHELLEY STOLMAN OF KESHET RAVES ABOUT THE NONPROFIT’S MISSION TO CREATE A SENSE OF BELONGING FOR ITS CHILDREN AND ADULTS. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

Three-year-old Chloe Stolman asked the question in the presence of her siblings, 9-year-old Ari and 6-year-old Brooke. “Why can’t Uncle Ira talk?” Chloe queried. The older children each jumped at the chance to provide the answer. “Uncle Ira does talk—with his eyes,” one said. “And with his smile and his hugs,” the other chimed. Hearing the wonderful exchange that day was the children’s mother, Deerfield resident and Shirley Ryan AbilityLab speech pathologist Shelley Stolman, whose brother, Ira, is nonverbal and has severe intellectual disabilities and a seizure disorder. “To hear Ari and Brooke talk like that and enlighten my youngest made me smile and brought me so much pride,” Shelley, 39, recalls the day after she and her husband, Salesforce Regional VP for New Business Sales Ken Stolman, co-chaired Keshet’s biggest fundraiser of the year—the “Voices of Champions” virtual event—on March 9. Keshet (Hebrew for “rainbow”) turned 40 this year. The internationally known nonprofit serves children and adults with disabilities and creates a community of belonging where people of all abilities learn, play, work, live, and grow together. It serves a combined 600 participants in Chicago and the city’s suburbs. Keshet believes children and adults with disabilities deserve to be part of the wide community in ways that they choose to be involved. Keshet provides the support for people to access opportunities to live full and meaningful lives in their home communities. Ira, 34, has been embraced by Keshet since he was 4 years old. “My parents (dentist Michael and former grade-school teacher Renee) were at such a loss at what to do for Ira, who had not been successful in school or at camps,” says Shelley Stolman, who grew up in Buffalo Grove and attended Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, where she served as Student Council President in 2000-2001. “They felt stress. There was a cloud over my family (including Shelley’s younger sister, Karen, now a lawyer) for several years. “Then my parents found Keshet,” she continues. “It provided relief, immediately. Angst and worries disappeared. It transformed our family, giving us hope and confidence. Ira attended a Keshet camp first and was paired with an inclusion facilitator; he later enrolled in Keshet’s school programs.” For 30 years, and counting, Stolman and her family have appreciated Keshet’s commitment to inclusion. At Keshet, inclusion is a mindset, not a program, that shapes values, culture, and decisions. Co-chairs of Keshet’s biggest fundraiser were always parents of Keshet participants. Until this year.

10

Shelley Stolman became the first sibling of a Keshet participant to spearhead the funder, which, for the second year in a row, raised more then $800,000 to sustain and expand Keshet’s educational, recreational, adult, and residential programs. More than 30 percent of this year’s 800plus donors were first-time Keshet contributors. And they weren’t just local givers. Stolman heard from folks living in New Jersey and Oregon. “People from all over the country were touched by Keshet’s programs,” she says. “I love highlighting the magic of Keshet.” NBC5 reporter Jen DeSalvo emceed the “Voices of Champions” event. Special vocal guests included the Keshet Choir performing alongside the Chicago Children’s Choir, Broadway’s Miguel Cervantes (Hamilton), America’s Got Talent’s Jacob Valezquez, and the Ravinia Ramblers. Longtime Keshet supporter Sharon Frankel, of Deerfield, received the Lifetime Champion award. The Ariella Joy Frankel Keshet Day School, one of Keshet’s flagship programs, was named in memory of Sharon’s daughter. “I love the theme, champions, we came up with this year, because there are so many definitions of champions, so many kinds of champions,” Stolman says. “The true champions of Keshet are my brother and the rest of the participants. Keshet staff members— champions. Keshet parents— champions. Other Keshet family members—champions. I could go on and on. Peers at Keshet camps—champions. Keshet’s founders—champions. “We celebrated 40 years of champions. But we also recognized what I think is the most amazing thing about Keshet—the positive impact it continues to have on the community as a whole, in addition to the variety of ways it lifts the participants’ spirits and puts them on the path to a sense of belonging.” Stolman was 12 when she first volunteered as a Sunday School teacher for Keshet. Sister Karen volunteered, too. The pair also helped out at Keshet summer camps, at Buddy Baseball games, and at Special Olympics. “Our parents,” Stolman says, “never pressured us to sign up to volunteer. I have to give them credit for setting such a positive tone for our fam-

ily and maintaining it. Keshet has been such an invaluable part of our family for three decades now. A lot of parents who have children with disabilities worry about what’s going to happen to them after they turn 21. They wonder, ‘Then what?’ “Not at Keshet,” she adds. “When you’re a parent of a Keshet participant, you find comfort in knowing how helpful its Adult Day and other

adult programs are.” Stolman—whose mother-inlaw, Maureen, was her fourthgrade teacher—majored in speech and hearing science at the University of Illinois in Champaign and earned her master’s degree in speech and pathology at Rush University in Chicago. Everything about motherhood heartens Stolman, especially when her children interact with Ira. Uncle Ira savors McDonald’s and pizza and time with Ari and Brooke and Chloe. When he makes a buzz sound, he’s announcing his happiness. Yet another way Ira communicates without talking. “Ira,” Stolman says, “is affectionate and sweet. He’ll walk up to you and put his arm around you. And I love it when my youngest walks with Ira, or when one of my kids feeds him snacks. “Knowing the meaning of inclusion, at their ages— that’s such a precious gift.”
