HEALING HEARTS A WINNETKA DOCTOR'S COMMITMENT TO NON-INVASIVE HEART SURGERY HAS LED HIM TO BECOME ONE OF THE TOP ROBOTIC HEART SURGEONS IN THE WORLD. BY MITCH HURST THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Dr. Husam Balkhy’s fascination with the human heart began with seeing one in person. “I was always an overachiever in high school and was able to actually observe a cardiac surgery at the latter part of my performative education,” says Balkhy, explaining that this life-changing experience happened toward the end of his high school years in Saudi Arabia. “I felt that the heart was an amazing organ, and for somebody to be able to operate on it, it just blew my mind. At a young age it became my goal.” The Winnetka surgeon’s family immigrated to the United States when he was young, then moved back to Saudi Arabia during high school when his academic father took a post at a university. He went to medical school in Saudi Arabia with the goal of becoming a heart surgeon and moved back to the United States to continue his medical training. It was during his surgical training at Tufts University New England Medical Center in the early ‘90s that he became convinced that non-invasive surgery was the preferred approach—regardless of medical specialty or the organ that needed to be operated on.

“I was lucky enough to do my surgical training in Boston and I trained in general surgery, vascular surgery, and cardiac surgery,” he says. “It was at the time when surgeons started understanding that the trauma that is inflicted on a patient by surgery sometimes overshadows the perceived benefit of the operation that we're conducting.” Balkhy says most heart surgeons still conduct surgeries the traditional way, where the sternum is sawed in half, because the heart is a much more complex and difficult organ. Many surgeons feel a big cut is required because that’s just the price of doing business. “That state of mind didn't appeal to me because I was seeing long recovery times, and some people getting infections in their sternal incisions,” Balkhy says. “There’s a saying that ‘big surgeons make big incisions,’ and in my mind, the smaller the incision the better the surgeon. It may be a little harder on me and harder on the team, but let’s make it easier on the patients because they're the ones who need to go through the recovery.” One of the criticisms of non-invasive surgery is that it takes too long, but what Dr. Balkhy tells junior surgeons and medical students in training is that the patient Continued on PG 9

NEWS HEALING HEARTS

From PG 1

has come to you that day to give you their heart to fix. “Why do we need to have a really short interaction? Why is it bad to take as much time as you need to produce the perfect outcome with the least invasion?” he says. “Surgeons are asked to do two and three cases a day where in my mind, if a human being came to me and said, ‘here's my heart, I want you to fix it,’ if I can do it safely, I'll spend as much time as necessary to fix it without that big chest cut.” It was when he went into private practice in Milwaukee in 1997 that his path toward becoming an expert in non-invasive surgery took shape. After a couple of years performing traditional heart surgeries with large cuts. it became clear to him that was not the way he wanted to spend the rest of his career. By 1999, an operation emerged called a Beating Heart Surgery or Off-Pump, Coronary Bypass, Balkhy quickly embraced the approach because it eliminated the need for a heart-lung machine. “Even though you were cutting the chest open you were eliminating the heart-lung machine, which was a very laudable thing for recovery,” he says. “About 20 percent of surgeons started doing that, some with good outcomes, some with not the best outcomes. But I quickly embraced it, as did several other surgeons in Milwaukee.” In 2003, Dr. Balkhy started doing operations for irregular heartbeats using scopes, operations that required just a small incision on the right side of the chest. A year later he was doing valve surgeries, also using small cuts on the side of the chest instead of cutting into the sternum. The natural next step was to start using robotics. “Another one of the hospitals in Milwaukee got a robot and that's when it hit my radar in a big way. I said, ‘I’ve got to get this device so I can really go to the next level,’” Balkhy says. “Which is advanced technology and three-dimensional instrumentation that really duplicates the function of the human hand and sometimes actually exceeds it.” Balkhy started looking around for robots and was able to convince the CEO of the hospital where he was the chairman of surgery to bring in the device. He did some training early 2007, and in the summer conducted his first robotic surgery. Over the next 10 years his practice would become fully robotic where he didn't open the chest at all. Around 2013, Balkhy was recruited by the University of Chicago Hospital, and soon he and his team relocated from Milwaukee. The rest is history. “UChicago Hospital was a good option. I was very impressed with the executive team and the dean of the medical school. They had a vision,” says Balkhy. “I felt that I would be able to advance my vision from a little bit more of an academic platform. So, I've been here now eight years this summer.” Balkhy says the commitment that UChicago Hospital made was to make robotic technology a priority. The expense of the THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

instruments was never a question, and he had the freedom to organize the program from the beginning. Balkhy’s team at UChicago now does about 200 robotic surgeries a year. His team includes six members, as well as anesthesiologists who are facile with the robotic approach, and experienced operating-room personnel. While robotic heart surgery cannot treat every heart condition—heart transplants, for example—the technology continues to evolve in a way that allows surgeons to handle more complex problems including coronary artery, valve, and heart rhythm disorder among many others. “Basically, the more technology and the more options we have, the more thought process goes into customizing the therapy that we deliver for each and every patient specifically,” Balkhy says. “So, the inclusion criteria for robotic surgery have grown since we started, and the exclusion criteria have receded.” The advantages of robotic heart surgery are quicker recovery, less complications, less pain, and earlier return to work and normal activities. “Those are the four big advantages, and what I would recommend to patients if their doctor doesn't know this approach or they're not being referred is to get a second opinion. Be your own advocate.” One other advantage of non-invasive, robotic surgery is that it avoids the potential effects traditional heart surgery can have on mental health. Scars left on the chest, some that can run from the neck to the belly but-

ton, can sometimes have a negative impact on self-esteem and quality of life. “If you think about it, biologically, it is a big deal sawing someone’s sternum. You really have to be very motivated to have somebody go through that,” Balkhy says. “I used to tell my team, ‘we're about to take this saw and cut into their sternum and separate,’ and it became a mantra for us to just acknowledge that, because when you do that two or three times a day every day as a cardiac surgery team, you become immune and numb to what it really does to people.” Which is why, Balkhy says, patients who are able to have their heart problems addressed through robotic surgery are grateful for the technology “We get patients that go online, and they send us their films. Then they ask, ‘am I candidate for this?’” he says. “Usually, they are because everybody's a candidate until proven otherwise. They fly in and they have their

surgery, and they fly back home a week later and they're extremely grateful for not having had that big chest cut.” Anthony Andaleon, an electrical engineer from Winthrop Harbor, underwent robotic surgery performed by Dr. Balkhy for a blockage on March 4. More than a decade ago, his mother had traditional heart surgery and he watched as she struggled to fully recover. He wishes the technology was available back then. “I saw my mom undergo heart bypass surgery and I didn’t want to go through the same thing,” Andaleon says. “I did my intake at 6 a.m. and by 2 p.m. I was already walking around. The next day, I was back to normal, and the following week I was back at my gym.” For more information, visit UChicagoMedicine.org/Robotic-Heart-Surgery or call 773834-1612.

CORKS FOR A CAUSE A LAKE FOREST RESIDENT BRINGS THE DRINKS TO VIRTUAL FUNDRAISERS. BY BILL MCLEAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Bill Bucklew needed help earlier this year. The Wilmette resident and tireless advocate for Parkinson’s disease research and awareness was struggling to come up with a local fundraising event for the Parkinson’s Foundation and the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. He wasn’t alone. More than one-third of U.S. nonprofits are in peril of shuttering within two years because of the financial damage imposed by the coronavirus pandemic, according to a recent study conducted by the research group Candid and the Center for Disaster Philanthropy. So Bucklew—who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2012, at age 43, walked across the United States to raise much-needed funds and awareness five years later—called friend and business associate Louis Amoroso, a Lake Forest resident and co-founder and president of Direct to Consumer (DTC) wine at DRINKS. The company owns and operates Wine Insiders (wineinsiders.com) and Martha Stewart Wine Co. (marthastewartwine.com) that allow customers to shop for wine online and have it delivered to their doorstep, office, or one of 14,000 pick up locations within days. DRINKS—launched in 2013 and led by a team with unparalleled digital media, commerce, DTC, and adult beverage experience—had recently donated thousands of cases of wine to Frontline Wine, which finds the hospitals that are struggling the most and distributes bottles of wine directly to healthcare workers fighting COVID-19. “The year 2020 was a year of major growth in the online grocery business, and, fortunately for us, there were a lot of people at home drinking a lot of wine,” says Amoroso, a founder of Goose Island Beer Company, now owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev. “Our country’s dedicated frontline workers worked tirelessly … with so many of them stuck in hotels at the beginning of the pandemic. We just knew we had to find a way to give back. At DRINKS, we’ve always had an eye for philanthropy and doing what we can, and we identified a unique way to help put a smile on the faces of healthcare professionals in ICUs around the country at a time when they really needed a break.” Amoroso and his team jumped at the opportunity to aid Bucklew, collaborating with the Parkinson’s Foundation and the Michael J. Fox group to stage a virtual wine tasting fundraiser. DRINKS offered automatic registration for customers who purchased a special three-, six- or 12-pack of wine by integrating Eventbrite, Zoom Webinar, Pledgeling, and its proprietary e-commerce platform. The event drew nearly 1,200 participants

14

and raised more than $65,000. “The response from the Parkinson’s wine tasting was tremendous,” adds the 52-yearold father of six. “We saw tons of interaction via Zoom, and we even had a ‘Q & A’ button, with sommeliers answering questions from

than $250,000. Next up: “Corks For A Cause,” a virtual wine and music event set for April 9. It will benefit twelve North Shore charities, including Bravo Waukegan!, Citadel Theatre, Forward 4 Tobi, GBS Booster Club, Glenview

participants. People had a fun experience. It was a great alternative way to raising money in a tough year for charities. The Parkinson’s groups loved it.” DRINKS followed that up with a similar function for Misericordia, a community of care that maximizes the potential for people with mild to profound developmental disabilities, many of whom are also physically challenged. That virtual wine tasting attracted some 700 participants and generated more

Women's Club, and Youth Services of Glenview/Northbrook. The plan is to raise a glass (actually four), paired with select cheeses, and fondly reminisce with songs from some classic Chicago musicians in an imaginary outdoor street festive—all in the name of charity. “This event is a testament to the magic that comes out of working together to raise each other up during difficult times,” says Michael Rosengarden, owner of Autohaus on Edens Mercedes-Benz. “Smaller organizations don’t

always have the same opportunity to hold big fundraising events, nor do they have the same ease of pivoting due to unprecedented events like bigger not-for-profits do. We’re thrilled to partner with these local charities to aid the incredible work they continue to do.” In addition to the donations from DRINKS and the tasting attendees, Rosengarden has pledged to underwrite a $1,000 match per nonprofit for the event in order to elevate their individual missions even further. “We’re also partnering with the Humane Society for a national event (set for late May or early June),” says Amoroso, adding the number of attendees for that occasion could reach 10,000. Cheers to DRINKS for a number of reasons, but mostly for finding ways to lift the spirits of folks who carry out the missions for vital organizations. Visit drinks.com for more information. SELLER’S MARKET MORE BUYERS THAN HOUSES IN THE MARKET The 2020 housing market was a year of extremes. In February of last year there were approximately 300 homes listed for sale in Lake Forest and 120 homes were available in Lake Bluff. Inventory levels declined precipitously since the onset of the pandemic. Currently, the supply of available single-family homes has dropped to just 120 in Lake Forest and 24 in Lake Bluff. Demand increased dramatically last summer and continued through Fall and into the Winter fueled by historically low mortgage rates and an exodus from more densely populated urban areas. These extremely low levels of available inventory have created what is often referred to as a Seller’s Market. A market like this creates a unique opportunity for homeowners who are contemplating a sale. We are seeing strong price appreciation in many price ranges.

DUTCH TREAT NEW THEATER AT LOYOLA ACADEMY TO BE NAMED AFTER THE FAMILY OF ALUMNUS PETE LEEMPUTTE. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

Their love story began in a German III class at Loyola Academy in the 1970s. Pete was a junior at the private, Catholic college preparatory school in Wilmette. Ellen was a junior at Regina Dominican High School, also in Wilmette. Herr Henry Grove taught the class. “Loyola Academy,” Pete Leemputte says, “was an all-boys school then. But we took classes with girls from Regina Dominican every first period. I was into sciences and served as the head of the Chemistry Club. I was a nerd. Ellen was vivacious.” Initially they sat far apart from each other in the classroom. That changed, gradually, as they got to know each other. “By the end of the term I was sitting pretty close to her,” Leemputte, now 63, recalls. Ellen asked Skokie native Pete (Loyola Academy, Class of 1975) to accompany her to a dance held at Regina. The event’s theme was “Stairway To Heaven,” the eight-minute slow song by Led Zeppelin that was always—always—played at the very end of a school dance. Pete and Ellen are still dancing together, only now they’re Mr. and Mrs. Pete Leemputte of Lake Forest and the parents of four grown children, ages 28 to 35. Beginning in Fall 2022, they’ll gladly sit one out to take in a theater performance at Loyola Academy’s new Leemputte Family Theater. Pete and Ellen gave a multimillion-dollar leadership gift to help fund the theater and the new 29,000-square-foot Center for the Performing Arts, slated to stand at the northeast corner of the academy’s Wilmette campus in about 18 months. The 550-seat proscenium theater will feature a balcony, orchestra pit, and fly tower. Donors plan to gather on March 28 for a small groundbreaking blessing ahead of the project’s official Valenti Builders groundbreaking ceremony in early April. “I truly enjoyed being a student at Loyola Academy, and I was grateful for the experiences I had there,” says Leemputte, whose ancestors came from The Netherlands. “It was a different experience on the North Shore. North Shore students and students from the city attended Loyola; I loved that about it, loved and appreciated the diversity of the student body, because it opened my eyes. It was one of many reasons my wife and I sent our kids there. “Ellen and I focus on giving to enhance education,” he continues, adding discussions he had with Loyola Academy President (the Rev.) Patrick McGrath years ago galvanized his commitment to support the opening of additional doors to creative expression for his alma mater’s students. “There’s a lot to like about what’s available to Loyola Academy stu-

dents now—the fields for athletics at the Munz campus in Glenview and the new pool, as well as the academics and the important values fostered by the leadership and faculty. But they call the theater that’s there now ‘the little theater.’ It’s too little.” The Center for the Performing Arts will also house a spacious lobby and gallery space; offstage rehearsal and staging areas; a fully equipped scene shop; a green room; makeup and dressing rooms; a director’s office; state-ofthe-art lighting and production technologies; a 125-linear-foot carved glass wall overlooking an outdoor plaza that will function as an open-air performance stage and

gathering space for the Loyola Academy community; a flexible student lounge; and a newly defined campus quad, designed by students in Loyola’s Architecture Club. A son of the late Peter and the late Mary Leemputte, Pete, who received financial aid to attend the Jesuit school founded in 1909, still cherishes the relationships he developed with Loyola Academy teachers as a teenager. Herr Grove? “A great teacher, a wonderful man,” he says. Philosophy teacher Louis Demos? “Fantastic.” Computer and chemistry teacher Jim Dusablon? “Fun to talk to, always, and a great all-around guy.” But there’s more to the Loyola Academy education than its academics. Leemputte will tell you that. Any Loyola Academy graduate will tell you that. Jesuit values are instilled there, perhaps none more than “Women and Men for and with Others.” Leemputte earned his B.S. in Chemical Engineering at Washing-

ton University in St. Louis. He completed a couple of stints in the product development department at Proctor & Gamble in Cincinnati, before getting his MBA in Finance and Marketing at the University of Chicago. Ellen attended Oberlin College in Ohio for a couple of years before transferring to complete coursework in pre-occupational therapy at the University of Illinois. After holding positions at Chicago Title & Trust, Armco, FMC Corporation, and Amoco, Pete Leemputte served as Chief Financial Officer of Brunswick Corporation (2003-2008), CFO of Mead Johnson Nutrition Company (2008-2015), and CFO and Treasurer of Keurig Green Mountain, Inc. (2015-2016), now known as Keurig Dr Pepper. He serves on three boards of directors, including the governing body for MasterCraft Boat Holdings, Inc. “That keeps my mind active,” Leemputte says. What keeps him happy? Time with family, especially when the setting is the family’s place in Macatawa, Michigan, near Holland. “Working on three boards requires a considerable amount of time, and I’m trying to exercise as much as possible,” Leemputte says. “But if you’re asking me what’s at the center of my free activities, it’s family.” At the center of his heart? Ellen. Still. “She’s one of the kindest people I’ve ever met,” Leemputte says. “Everyone who knows her loves her. She’s also funny and beautiful. “I’ve been blessed.” Their love story continues… Loyola Academy is located at 1100 Laramie Avenue in Wilmette.
