NEWS HYMNS FROM THE HOMELAND
From PG 1
BY MITCH HURST THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Music was perpetually in the air at home for Ani and Marta Aznavoorian, who grew up in Barrington with strong musical influences from their father, Peter. Third generation Armenians, the two sisters and their brother, Marty, learned to play instruments early on. While Marty, with his father’s urging, landed on the violin, a staple of Armenian music and culture, Marta took to the piano and Ani the cello. Though Marty ended up studying medicine instead of pursuing a career in music, both Ani and Marta have established themselves as top musicians in classical music. Marta is one third of the acclaimed, North Shore-based Lincoln Trio and, along with other projects, is currently Artist in Residence at the Music Institute of Chicago. Ani is principal cellist in Camerata Pacifica, a California-based chamber ensemble that plays in intimate venues between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. Both have traveled the world performing separately and together as the Aznavoorian duo. It wasn’t until the pandemic that the two sisters were given the opportunity to achieve one of their dreams—recording a musical tribute to their Armenian roots. With traveling and live performing suspended, the two were able to get together in Chicago last August to record “Gems from Armenia,” which includes interpretations for piano and cello of some historically important works by Armenian composers.
Marta Aznavoorian (above) and her sister Ani Aznavoorian (right) have traveled the world separately and as the Aznivoorian Duo.

“When you’re Armenian-American, you're very immersed, very close to your Armenian traditions. We were raised very close to Armenian traditions with the food and the music,” Marta Aznavoorian says. “We went to an Armenian Church and to Armenian picnics and events. There’s quite a large Armenian diaspora here in Chicago, and the community stays very tight.” Marta says she and Ani always knew they would record an album of Armenian music; it was just a matter of timing. The recording was released on Friday, April 15, by Cedille Records, the nonprofit label dedicated to supporting Chicago classical musicians. “Gems from Armenia” is a sort of survey of old and new composers, in chronological order, and somewhat serendipitously includes a new composition by American composer Peter Boyer—who has written hundreds of compositions for film and for orchestras around the world. The recording has a distinctively melancholy feel, which reflects the struggles of the Armenian people throughout its history. “The CD is in three sections. The first section is the original Armenian music from Komitas Vartabed, a priest and arranger. He arranged thousands of Armenian folk melodies and he really gave us the flavor of Armenian music as we know it today,” Marta says “It’s really that minor modal, melancholy sound that comes from him. Then we move into late-19th Century, early-20th-Century, composers from the Soviet Union like Aram Khachaturian.” The recording finishes with more modern works by Armenian composers, some of whom are still alive, and closes with the work from Peter Boyer. “You have all these Armenian names and suddenly you have this American composer Peter Boyer who is very wellknown for his American sound,” Marta says. “We wanted him to write something for us with his American flavor, but we wanted him to integrate an Armenian folk melody into it.” The Boyer composition, titled “Ararat,” is an ode to the disputed region of Armenia that includes the mountain mentioned

in the Bible that some historians believe to be where Noah’s ark landed after the flood. Though it now—disputedly—resides within the borders of Turkey, it is considered a national symbol for Armenians. “We just really felt that we needed to represent not just our Armenian Heritage but our American side,” Marta says. “We are essentially American-Armenian, so we really wanted something to integrate the two.” For Ani Aznavoorian, it was also important for the first recording by the Aznavoorian Duo to capture their Armenian heritage. “This is our first album as a duo, so we wanted to present ourselves in the most personal way possible,” Ani says. “We could have recorded all Beethoven sonatas or something like that, but for this first album we really wanted to make it from our hearts.” Ani says so much of the music they recorded was what they heard during their childhood in church and at concerts and events. Her and Marta’s family was heavily involved in the Ar-

menian cultural scene in the Chicago area. “We’ve heard of lot of these melodies from our childhood, and it feels like it’s in our blood,” Ani says. “The core of the album are these Komitas pieces—he was known as the grandfather of Armenian music—and all of the composers since Komitas kept that Armenian flavor.” Perhaps no event has influenced Armenian culture and music as the Armenian genocide during World War II. It can be heard in the compositions on “Gems from Armenia.” There’s a sadness in the compositions but a beauty also, reflective of the strength of the Armenian people. “The genocide unfortunately defines our history,” Marta says. “We are a very resilient people, and we can adapt in a lot of different ways to survive in many different situations.” “Gems from Armenia” is available now on streaming services and online music retailers, including cedillerecords.com. What’s the best advice you’ve given to your clients? No home is ever perfect so it is really important to focus on the big picture and the “unchangeables” rather than the little things that might turn you off at first glance. NO.04
Thoughts on the current market? It’s truly been fascinating to be apart of the market this year with both buyers and sellers. It has become common practice to see a listing hit the market with the sellers offer “wish list” attached and 9 times out of 10 those wishes are granted. We believe this will continue to be a sellers market for at least another year, if not more. With such a high demand from buyers & a greater appreciation for “home”, 2022 will continue to be a sellers market despite the rates inching up. NO.05

Meet Jennie Pastor How did Jennie get into real estate? I’ve personally been involved in almost every type of residential real estate transaction. I have relocated internationally (from London to Connecticut) and across the country (Connecticut to Illinois), I have bought and sold multiple homes as well as owned investment properties, been a tenant and purchased a tear down and built a house from scratch. So I have lived through 95% of the scenarios that residential real estate clients find themselves in and I wanted to utilize that unique insight and combine it with my extensive experience in corporate sales to help others navigate the world of real estate so they can achieve their goals! I joined the Paige Dooley team because Paige is simply one of the best in business and working alongside Paige has meant I’ve hit the ground running! I have found my passion in real estate and

No other residential real estate company in the world has invested in technology like COMPASS has to create tools that are exceptional. I also greatly admire and respect Robert Reffkin, our

Barb and Jackie Pepoon: Their Clients Say it Best Testimonials “My wife and I have worked with Jackie and the Pepoon team twice in the last 3 years, and our expectations were exceeded both times. Three years ago, we were able to seamlessly buy an amazing starter home in Winnetka in only a couple of weeks as we moved from Los Angeles. More recently, we sold the starter home and bought our dream home in the North Shore against multiple competing offers for our growing family. Jackie is the best. She makes the entire transaction so easy by taking care of all the details and using her experience and knowledge of the local market. My family recommends Jackie and the Pepoon team to all of our friends.” — C O N N O R T.
“Barb and Jackie came highly recommended to us and from the beginning exceeded our every expectation. We were moving from the city to the suburbs during a global pandemic, with a shortage of inventory, and often had our kids in tow. While there were times we were worried we wouldn’t find a home we loved, Barb and Jackie were reassuring and supportive at every turn. They know the north shore INCREDIBLY well, were knowledgeable about the market, neighborhoods, schools, and what to look for when touring a home. We are so thankful we had them by our side during this journey.”
“This is a team of true professionals and a pleasure to work with. They are extremely empathetic and made sure to understand the nature of our situation before making any recommendations. They treated us like we were family and we would never consider working with anyone else!” — TO N Y Y.

EGG SALAD ON PAIN DE MIE BREAD WITH HOMEMADE MAYO BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
The week after Easter, home cooks around the country puzzle through the same question: What do I do with all of these hard-boiled eggs? They prepare eggs on toast, deviled eggs, Scotch eggs, and niçoise salads a plenty. But a perfect egg-salad sandwich made with homemade mayo on fresh baked bread rivals them all. Here are recipes for all three. Note: The egg salad recipe makes enough for three sandwiches, so, you’ll have extra bread and mayo left over for your next sandwich adventure.
Makes 3 sandwiches
INGREDIENTS
EGG SALAD: • 6 large eggs in their shells (Once hard-cooked, you will use all 6 cooked yolks, but only four of the cooked whites) • ½ cup mayonnaise (recipe follows) • 1/8 tsp mustard powder • ¼ tsp celery salt • ¼ cup finely diced mildly flavored baby pickles • 1 Tablespoon very finely diced chives • 1 Tablespoon very finely diced parsley • 2 teaspoons finely snipped dill • Freshly cracked black pepper to taste • Green leaf lettuce
• 2 small Persian cucumbers, peeled and sliced thin • 6 slices Pain de Mie bread, fresh or lightly toasted (recipe follows)
• ½ cup nonfat dry milk flakes • 1/3 cup mashed potato (made from the reserved cooked potato) • 4 ¾ cups unbleached all-purpose flour
PAIN DE MIE BREAD: • 13-inch Pullman (Pain de Mie) loaf pan, with lid • 1 large potato, diced • 2 cups water • 2/3 cup whole milk, warmed to room temperature • 2 teaspoons (1 packet) instant yeast granules • 2-¼ teaspoons salt • 3 Tablespoons sugar • 6 Tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
HOMEMADE MAYONNAISE: • (Makes 2-½ cups) • 2 large eggs • ¼ tsp salt • 1 Tablespoon sugar • 1 ¼ teaspoons mustard powder • ½ teaspoon paprika • pinch of celery salt • 1/8 teaspoon white pepper • 1/3 cup white vinegar • 2 cups vegetable oil, divided
PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS
METHOD MAKE THE PAIN DE MIE: Place potato in small pan with 2 cups water. Heat to boiling. Lower heat and simmer potato until soft. Pour potatoes with liquid through a strainer to reserve 1 cup of the potato water. Mash enough of the diced cooked potato to make 1/3 cup. Reserve remaining potato for another use. While the potato water cools, sprinkle yeast over the roomtemperature milk and allow to bloom for 2 minutes. Combine 1/3 cup of the mashed potato, the 1 cup tepid potato water and the 2/3 cup milk with yeast in the bowl of a stand mixer with dough hook attachment; add the sugar and

mix. Add salt, melted butter, dry milk flakes and flour. Mix/knead until you have a soft dough. Remove dough to a greased, deep bowl. Lightly cover with plastic wrap or towel and let rise for 1 ½ hours until almost doubled in bulk. Punch down the dough. On clean worksurface, shape dough into a rectangle. Roll into a log. Lightly grease the Pullman pan and place dough log into pan, seam side down. Lightly cover with plastic wrap or a clean towel and allow to rise for 45 minutes. During the last 15 minutes of rising time, preheat oven to 350°. Slide the lid onto the Pullman pan. Place in the center of the oven and bake for 25 minutes. Remove
lid. Bake for another 20 minutes. Remove bread to a cooling rack. MAKE THE MAYONNAISE: In a 1-quart container, combine all ingredients except the oil. Add ¼ cup of the oil. Using an immersion blender, blend this mixture for three minutes. (Or transfer all to a food processor and blend for three minutes.) Slowly add remaining oil in a steady stream until the mayonnaise has whipped into fluffy consistency. Refrigerate. MAKE THE EGG SALAD FILLING: Peel the hard-cooked eggs. Discard shells. Place the yolks in one bowl and the whites in a second bowl. Using an immersion blender or fork, blend

the yolks with mayonnaise, mustard powder and salt until very smooth. Press the whites of the eggs through a potato ricer, or, finely grate. Mix whites with the yolks. Add finely diced pickle, chive, parsley and dill. Season with a few grinds of black pepper. ASSEMBLE SANDWICH: Spread bread slices with thin layer of homemade mayonnaise. Top with small amount of egg salad. Top with lettuce leaves. Top with more egg salad. Shingle with a few thin slices of cucumber. Top with top layer of bread. Slice sandwich on the diagonal to make two triangular halves. Serve immediately. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

S U N D AY B R E A K FA S T :
SHE CAN DANCE—AND TEACH AND INSPIRE
EXUBERANT CHILDREN’S THEATRE OF WINNETKA ALUMNA JENNY OELERICH RETURNS TO THE SCENE OF THE SUBLIME PRODUCTIONS AS CTW’S ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF CHOREOGRAPHY. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
The Wondrous Whirlwind from Winnetka, also known as Jenny Oelerich, has to sit still, finally. It’s a recent midafternoon at the Community House in Winnetka, where the Winnetka native and 2015 New Trier High School alumna serves as a dance teacher and the Children’s Theatre of Winnetka assistant director of choreography. Oelerich, 25, also works as a personal trainer and yoga instructor at Sona Fitness in Evanston and performs for the Chicago modern dance company Khecari. Having to sit in a chair while patiently answering questions about her life and the upcoming Children’s Theatre of Winnetka (CTW) production of Matilda the Musical must feel downright bizarre for someone who typically moves nearly as often as she blinks each day. But she’s more than a good sport about the 0 mph to-do item on her busy day and powers through the sedentary get-together. “I started dancing at the age of 2,” Oelerich says as her eyes, triggered by a contagious smile, begin to bop. “I loved dancing, right away. Jazz, musical theater, contemporary, hip-hop, modern, and ballet … learned them all. My favorite was contemporary. The more I danced, the more confident I became in an environment that harbored positivity. One of the things that truly excites me today, as a dance teacher and as a choreographer, is watching a child’s confidence grow during a lesson, or a rehearsal, or a performance. “So much of the good that comes out of dancing spills over into other aspects of their lives,” she adds. “They’re learning life lessons and teamwork. They’re finding success in the classroom because of dance, and they’ll find more success when they get the opportunities to express themselves in settings like

a college interview and a job interview.” One of the milieus in Matilda the Musical is a school. The CTW cast (fourth-grade through eighth-grade) will perform in six shows from April 28-May 1 at Matz Hall in the Community House in Winnetka. The musical is based on the 1988 children’s novel of the same name by Roald Dahl. Matilda is a 5-year-old girl with the gift of telekinesis who loves to read and faces difficulties caused by her family and school. “It’s a story of bravery,” says Oelerich, a CTW alumna who landed ensemble roles in Oliver!
I’m loving how the kids in our ensemble are inserting their personality into the choreography. They’re being creative and increasing their self-esteem at the same time.

(2007), Guys and Dolls (2008), The Music Man (2009), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (2010), and Annie Get Your Gun (2010) as a grade- and middle-school student, after debuting on stage in Winnetka Children’s Hour at the age of 6. “Matilda,” she adds, “helps her classmates and a teacher (Miss Honey). I’m loving how the kids in our ensemble are inserting their personality into the choreography. They’re being creative and increasing their self-esteem at the same time.” A daughter of Kurt and Gwen Oelerich, Jenny began her career in performing arts in her family’s basement and back yard. Gwen—the stage left manager of Matilda the Musical—runs Oelerich Productions, which produces shows featuring neighborhood children. Performances of The Sound of Music, Beauty and the Beast, Mary Poppins, The Wizard of Oz, and Frozen, among others, have showcased budding stars
and delighted local audiences. “My mom loves the theater,” says Oelerich, adding Gwen made an Amanda Thripp doll that will be used as a prop in Matilda the Musical. Jenny Oelerich took full advantage of what New Trier High School’s Kinesis Dance Company had to offer from the fall of 2011 until the spring of 2015. “There’s such an amazing performing arts program at New Trier,” says Oelerich, who lives in the Chicago neighborhood Lake View but plans to move to Winnetka next month. “My main dance teachers, Christopher Rutt and Johannah Wininsky, were super inspirational and encouraged me to pursue dance in college and as a career. “I owe them a lot.” In 2019, a year before landing her current position at CTW, Oelerich earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where she met her fiancé, Sam, who took dance lessons from Jenny on campus. South Side native and huge White Sox fan Sam and huge Cubs fan Jennifer attended a White Sox home game against the Tampa Bay Rays last weekend. They plan to get married next summer. In the meantime, Oelerich is also fully engaged in each of her many jobs. She arrives at Sona Fitness before 6 a.m., Monday through Friday, and leaves for the Community House a little after 3 p.m. If the dance artist isn’t teaching a form of dance to a wide range of students (from 2-year-olds to local Fred Astaires and Ginger Rogers) at the 111-year-old center, she’s guiding and inspiring an ensemble of enthusiastic children before the opening of a show. “A lot of kids out there want to be the lead in a play or a musical,” Oelerich says. “I never performed as a lead in my youth, and I was fine with that because I absolutely loved being a part of an ensemble. I always found it challenging and fun, and I hope the kids I work with now discover that as well. “There’s value in each performance of an ensemble member,” she adds. “These kids are finding purpose, in addition to meaning. They’re experiencing the benefits of being a part of something bigger than themselves.” Children’s Theatre of Winnetka’s production of Matilda the Musical opens April 28 at 7 p.m. and continues April 29 at 7:30 p.m.; April 30 at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.; and May 1 at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Performances take place at Matz Hall at the Community House, 620 Lincoln Avenue, Winnetka. Tickets for reserved seats can be purchased at childrenstheatrewinnetka.com for $15 each. For more information, visit childrenstheatrewinnetka.com or call the Community House at 847-446-0537.
