CHICAGO APPRENTICE NETWORK NORTH SHORE RESIDENT JIM COLEMAN OF ACCENTURE LEADS THE WAY BY JUDITH R. BAUMANN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

“I’m a city kid,” says Jim Coleman, Accenture’s Senior Managing Director for Chicago. He grew up on Chicago’s North Side and spent his summers working as a lifeguard for the Chicago Park District. “My parents taught me about the value of education, hard work, and family,” he recalls, explaining that his mother taught nursing at North Park College and his father was a special agent for the IRS. He attended St. Hilary School, then, following in his dad’s footsteps, he went to Loyola Academy in Wilmette. In 1988, after four intense years at Purdue under his belt, he graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering. “I had a number of interesting opportunities after graduation. But coming home to Chicago felt right. Joining Arthur Andersen (ultimately, Accenture) a firm founded here, was the icing on the cake.” Coleman rose through the ranks as a consultant, working in the Strategic Services practice area before starting to lead various segments of the consulting company’s business. He prides himself on being a “client guy” and consulting practitioner. But it wasn’t all work. He met his future wife Cari at Purdue; they married in 1992 and lived in Wrigleyville, renovating a greystone into a single-family home, not far from “The Friendly Confines.” Their son Griffin was born in 1997 and their daughter Kaelyn in 2000. Shortly after that, the family headed out of the city to the suburbs. Being more of a “city kid,” he and his wife headed to the Continued on PG 10

suburbs with the agreement that if they didn’t like the lifestyle, they’d move right back to Chicago. More than two decades later, they’re happily ensconced, having enjoyed all that living on the North Shore has offered. Their children have grown: Griffin will graduate from Loyola University this fall; Kaelyn is a Sophomore at Tulane University. In 2016, Coleman was asked by Accenture CEO Julie Sweet to take on leadership responsibility for Accenture’s Chicago office, home to more than 6,500 employees and one of Accenture’s largest offices in the world. While the role, clearly an honor, was an opportunity he wasn’t sure about. Initially. As he tells the story, Coleman’s “a commercial guy who is focused on clients.” After thoughtful consideration, he was inspired by what the role could offer, not for him, but for the community and for employees, as well as Accenture clients. “The Office Managing Director role truly opened my eyes to the responsibility that I could have individually and more importantly that our Chicago office could have to support the people of Chicago. I am so grateful for the way we’ve aligned and ignited to make a real difference,” he says. “It was an amazing opportunity and privilege to do this here in a city that is my home.” In 2016, Coleman attended a leadership breakfast with Mayor Rahm Emanuel hosted by One Million Degrees. Five months later, Accenture Chicago In late 2019, Mayor Lightfoot was asked hired five apprentices for an “earn-and-learn” about the program, saying: “The City of Chiprogram combining formal learning (e.g. cago is committed to inclusive growth that in-person, virtual, or computer-based trainensures the success of a thriving downtown ing) with on-the-job training experience. Today, she is an Application Development Analyst and is making a meaningful contribution to our business. She’s also become a friend to me, and to our family.” As her children were playing at a barbecue the company hosted not too long ago, he watched in awe of what a great mom she is and how this program gave her a life-changing opportunity. “Seeing the desire and impact that our employees have had in helping others has been the most rewarding part of my role,” Coleman adds. “As Daniel Burnham said, make no small plans. When people at companies like Accenture, Aon, and Zurich work together, we can accomplish amazing things, making our city a better place to live and work.” For more information, visit chicagoapprenticenetwork.org.

find just the right assortment among this carefully curated selection. Many of the most popular wildflowers, grasses, sedges, shrubs, and trees will be available—including early bloomers like Jack-in-the-pulpit and the feathery Prairie smoke; summer favorites such as Milkweeds, Coneflower and Gray’s sedge; and late bloomers including Rough blazing star and Cardinal flower, which closes the growing season with its brilliant red spikes. The sale is co-sponsored by the Wilmette Park District and will be held at Gillson Park Swim Beach parking lot, in Wilmette. Masks are required. Working Bikes, a Chicago-based nonprofit bike shop where old bicycles are fixed up for local sale at reasonable prices or for donation to global communities, will also be on hand to collect donations of used bikes and bike parts for reuse. Founded in 2006, Go Green Wilmette’s mission is to raise environmental awareness, inspire people to take action, and create a more sustainable community. This popular plant sale was initiated in 2015, by Karen Glennemeier, President and Senior Ecologist of Habitat Research LLC and former GGW board member. “We promoted the benefits of native plants for several years, but we didn’t see a lot of interest,” explains Glennemeier.

Go Green Wilmette's native plant sale, held Saturday, May 8, is the perfect one-stop shop for your spring garden needs.

“Native plants provide nourishment for native insects and pollinators, which are essential for both crop propagation and our planet's food chain. But I think most people weren’t certain about what to buy, so this seemed like a good way to introduce certified native plants and make it easy for people to find the right plants for their own yards which could be sunny, shady, wet or have predominantly clay soil.” GGW President Beth Drucker says that

12

she is thrilled with the success of the sales over the past 6 years. “Once Karen found a reliable grower, we teamed up with another Go Green group for the first sale. We had no idea whether people were even interested in growing native plants. The answer

| SATURDAY MAY 8 | SUNDAY MAY 9 2021

was a resounding ‘yes!’ Each year, both new and repeat customers have flocked to our sale, and they all go home to create beautiful outdoor spaces that are also beneficial for birds, pollinators, and other native insects and small creatures,” adds Drucker. “And the beauty of a truly native garden is that, once established, these plants practically take care of themselves, because they adapted long ago to the soil and climate of their native area.” For more information about the plant sale, visit plants.gogreenwilmette.org. CHANGE AGENT RELATIVITY TEXTILES FOUNDER ERIN MINCKLEY MAKES A DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD. BY ALLISON DUNCAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

In 2002, Chicago-based fine artist Erin Minckley lived in Morocco, studying abroad for her dual undergraduate degree in Art and Middle Eastern studies. She had dreams of one day working for National Geographic as a travel photojournalist, all in the pursuit of exploring untapped and misunderstood world cultures. During her time in the country, she learned to speak Arabic and, post-college, she returned to Morocco as a summer chaperone for students enrolled in her high school travel art program. It was then that she met her now exhusband, a native PHOTOGRAPHY BY RYAN Moroccan, and

began a long-distance love affair spanning the globe. “Going back and forth became part of my life,” says Minckley. “But we eventually moved to Chicago, so I could attend graduate school at the School of the Art Institute, SAIC.

Being married to an Arab Muslim man post-9/11 made me feel like I had to defend and stand up for people who were victims of prejudice.

I learned to process those thoughts through my artwork.” At the time, Minckley was creating large scale sculptures from printed fabrics. Minckley herself grew up in a predominantly Mormon culture in Salt Lake City, Utah, to which she and her family did not belong. The experience, she says, formed the

| SATURDAY MAY 8 | SUNDAY MAY 9 2021

foundation for her curiosity and empathy for those separate from a larger culture. “Salt Lake City is a very homogeneous place without a lot of cultural or religious diversity,” she says. “I fell in love with the idea of cultural translation and felt like Americans could benefit from positive reinforcement about foreign ideology.” THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

LIFESTYLE & ARTS With that idea in the back of her mind, Minckley graduated from the SAIC in 2012 with her MFA in Fiber and Materials Studies and began working as part-time faculty at the School. Not making much money, she says, she took on a few other jobs. “I picked up a position with a wallpaper manufacturer and learned the ins and outs of where paper is sourced, how to dropship, and, really, how to run a company,” says Minckley. “I started mulling the idea of starting my own wallpaper business and printed one design. I was raising two kids by then and working three jobs, so creating a brand was not necessarily an easy option.” That’s what happened, though. Minckley installed her wallpaper design for a local art show, where she was paired with painter Allison Reimus, who fell in love with the pattern and requested a different colorway for her baby’s nursery. The nursery went viral on the blog Project Nursery, and Minckley became inundated with requests. “I understood then that there was a demand for what I had created. I went to work building a website, an Instagram account, and made business cards.” Burnt out, Minckley soon quit her jobs to go all-in on Relativity Textiles in 2015, named for her initials EMC, which are also a moniker for Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity. “I started a 60-day Kickstarter campaign to raise money with a goal of $20,000,” she explains. “Within the first 50 days, we were fully funded. Even my third-grade teacher donated $25. I had bought into the idea, for so long, that artists were always going to struggle, and Kickstarter was the turning point when I started to actually believe in myself.” Her drawings and hand painted artworks

are the basis for each durable and ecofriendly design, mostly screenprinted by hand like the globally inspired motifs with cultural narratives that span the globe. Connecting foreign cultures by way of wallpaper motivates Minckley to pay homage to the craftsmen and women of the world. It connects homeowners in America with people from other places, symbolically. With the Kickstarter investment, Minckley bought supplies, created packaging, and printed enough paper to create 1,000 sample books. She distributed the books the old-fashioned way: Door-to-door and arranged “lunch and learn” meetings with local interior design firms. Once she participated in the Lake Forest Showhouse, Minckley says interior designers started to view her as a serious player. But six years in, there have been struggles, too. “My ten-year marriage fell apart when I became successful,” says Minckley. “He didn’t support me in my dreams and didn’t understand what I was trying to do. I’ve been a single mom of two for five years now so when COVID hit and I got the call that it was the last day of school, I thought life was coming to an end. But I’ve learned you have to be resilient. Anything is possible if you can first tackle your mindset.” Minckley set out to write a book in early 2020 as a way to tell her story and help others overcome the starving artist mentality. In Artists Who Thrive, she recounts her journey and gives advice for creatives to become the CEO of their own lives. She has since indie published the book on Amazon and started a podcast bearing the same name.

Last year, Relativity Textiles broke $250,000 in sales, and Minckley has

seen revenue double every year for four years. In fact, the pandemic, it seems, created even more demand for beautiful wallpaper to spruce up the four walls people stare at while home every day. “When I die, I don’t want it to say ‘wallpaper lady’ on my tombstone,” says Minckley. “I want it to say ‘artist who changed everyone’s point of view.’ I use wallpaper as a way to share my message and wrote a book to help artists like me have a breakthrough and find financial freedom. Any artist can do what I did. Take your creative magic and find a way to share it with the world. Better yet, scale it to be profitable.” Words to live by. NORTH SHORE FOODIE

GLORIOUS MORNING MUFFINS With the weather gorgeous and school ending, we are all ready to be outside. These oh-so-tender little morning muffins are a great grab-and-go to get you moving. They’re packed with so much good stuff: cinnamon, apple, carrot, zucchini, toasted nuts, and fresh squeezed orange juice—and they’re made with organic whole wheat flour, which is high-protein, to boot. Also nice? These muffins a good way to use up that extra apple, zucchini, and half-bag of mini carrots you’ve got hanging around.

RECIPE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS

INGREDIENTS • ½ cup walnuts or pecans • ½ cup Thompson seedless raisins • 2 cups whole wheat flour • 2 tsp baking soda • 2 tsp ground Saigon cinnamon • ½ tsp salt • ⅓ cup pecan meal (good source is guidryorganicfarms.com or villagefarmstand.com) • 1 cup packed dark brown sugar

24

METHOD • Ready-to-eat peeled baby carrots (about ½ bag) pulsed in a food processor to make 2 cups finely grated • 1 zucchini, washed, skin on, pulsed in a food processor to make 1-½ cups finely grated • 1-inch fresh ginger, finely grated • 1 apple, peeled, cored and chopped small • 3 large eggs, briefly beaten • ⅔ cup vegetable oil • ½ cup fresh squeezed orange juice

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Place nuts on a cookie sheet and toast for about 10 minutes, until fragrant. Chop nuts. Set aside. Place raisins in a small bowl; pour enough boiling water over the raisins to cover. Set aside. In a large bowl, sift whole wheat flour with soda, cinnamon, salt and pecan meal. Add brown sugar and whisk the sugar into the flour, breaking up until no small clumps remain. In the bowl of a food processor, using short pulses, pulse carrots and then zucchini

until finely grated. Add vegetables to the dry ingredients. Drain and discard the liquid from the plumped raisins; add raisins. Add grated ginger, chopped apple, beaten eggs, vegetable oil and orange juice. Stir until all ingredients are incorporated and no flour streaks remain. Fit a 12-muffin tin with paper muffin-cup liners, each sprayed with non-stick vegetable spray. Fill muffin cups with batter. Bake in 375-degree oven for 20 to 25 minutes until firm to the touch. Serve immediately, spread with butter. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

CAN-DO DORNAN GLENVIEW @PROPERTIES BROKER CONNIE DORNAN APPRECIATES EVERYTHING ABOUT MOTHERHOOD AND THE MISSION AT THE AUTISTIC SELF ADVOCACY NETWORK. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

This Sunday, on Mother’s Day, Connie Dornan expects three of the men in her life—husband Marc and their two sons, Michael and George—to make her a big brunch at home. The feast will include three musts: feta, olives, and tomatoes. “I’m Greek,” the funny and delightfully forthright Dornan, an @properties broker in her hometown of Glenview since 2013, says. “They know what I like to eat. “I’m also expecting them to be nice to me all day.” For the entire month of April—Autism Awareness Month—Dornan donated money for each home she sold to the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN). Michael, 21, has autism. “I want my son to be able to advocate for himself as best as he can,” Dornan says. “He’s not an autistic savant, and he’s not developmentally delayed; he’s somewhere in the middle. He’s getting up there in age, ready and eager to enter the job world, and his needs are changing. He doesn’t want his mom holding his hand all the time. “I recently discovered the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, while doing some research. It’s such a wonderful organization.” ASAN is a nonprofit, headquartered in Washington, D.C., run by and for autistic people. It was created to serve as a national grassroots disability rights organization for the autistic community, advocating for systems change and ensuring that the voices of autistic people are heard in policy debates and the halls of power. ASAN believes that the goal of autism advocacy should be a world in which autistic people enjoy equal access, rights, and opportunities. ASAN’s members and supporters include autistic adults and youth, cross-

Connie Dornan

disability advocates, and nonautistic family members, professionals, educators, and friends. Staffers at ASAN have no idea they’ll receive a generous donation from Dornan sometime this month. “I’ll surprise them,” she says. Among the early realities of motherhood for Dornan was realizing the hankering she had for a certain meal didn’t mean her boys would automatically love the food, too. But the joys of motherhood are too numerous to count for Dornan. Motherhood changed her—for the better. “With Michael in my life, I’m more compassionate, empathic, patient, and understanding,” Dornan adds. “He’s strengthened my marriage. “I can’t imagine my life without him.” The couple’s younger son, 18-yearold George, is a senior at Glenbrook South High School and a future economics major at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He was named an Illinois State Scholar. “I’m blessed,” Dornan says. “I’ve learned so much from both of my kids. It’s been a privilege to be their mother. They’re my darkness and my light, my everything, my motivation.” The other major man in Dornan’s life is her father, George Pappas, who lives in Northbrook with his wife, Maria. Natives of Greece, they arrived in the United States “with nothing,” Connie says, and raised two daughters. George worked in the produce business and turned nothing into something.

| SATURDAY MAY 8 | SUNDAY MAY 9 2021

A pivotal moment in Connie’s life occurred after she informed her father that she’d like to take a fencing class. He had an entirely different class in mind, urging Connie to sign up for a real estate class instead. “My father told me, ‘You’d be good at that,’”Dornan calls. “So I took a real estate class in Glenview.” Good, at real estate? Better than good. Connie Dornan surpassed $500 million in career residential sales this year. From 20142020 she was a Top 1 percent individual broker in the North Shore and in Cook County. The monthly newsletter RealTrends recognized the Regina Dominican High School graduate as a Top 1 percent broker in Illinois from 2015-2020. And Crain’s Chicago Business named Dornan a Notable Residential Real Estate Broker in 2018 and 2019. “Taking a fencing class is still on my bucket list,” Dornan, laughing, says. “Whenever I see fencers competing on TV, it’s pure artistry. “You have to start at the bottom if you want to be successful at anything, and that’s what I did in real estate,” she adds. “I made sure I knew and understood everything about the process and about the people in the industry. Especially the people. It was important to me to know exactly what an administrative assistant does.” The welcoming, communal environment at @properties allowed Dornan to make a smooth transition at the agency. “I wanted clarity about something early on at @properties, so guess what I did?” recalls the award-winning pianist in her youth. “I called up (@properties co-founders) Thad Wong and Mike Golden. They answered their phones; they listened to me. They walked me through a process, and I got clarity—in five minutes. When people think of a real estate company, they often believe it's super competitive and not collaborative. That’s not the case at @properties. I’ve always felt a part of a team, of a community, at our office in Glenview.” One of Connie’s first dates with Marc, who was born in Belfast, was taking in a Chicago Symphony Orchestra concert at Grant Park. An item inside the basket Marc had prepared for the evening: a jar of olives. “My husband has the patience of a saint,” says Dornan, who will celebrate her 25th wedding anniversary on October 27. “He’s my biggest fan, my biggest supporter, my best friend, my sounding board. He’s also the funniest and most intelligent man I’ve ever met. You want to know the secret to a great marriage? It’s humor. “We laugh all the time.” Visit autisticadvocacy.org for more information about Autistic Self Advocacy Network. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
