Three teams of students from Lake Forest Country Day School will join schools from around Illinois to participate in Advocacy Day to highlight the importance of state funding for technology and innovation in schools.

On the morning of Thursday, May 9, students from around the state of Illinois will unfold their tables in the Capitol Rotunda in Springfield and set up displays that demonstrate to legislators and their staffs how they’ve both learned about innovation and applied what they’ve learned to help others in their communities.

Sponsored by the Illinois Digital Educators Alliance (IDEA), Students for Innovation: Advocacy Day offers students from all age groups the opportunity to mingle with lawmakers and communicate to them about how technology and innovation are preparing them for the future.

With its innovation space on campus, Lake Forest Country Day School (LFCDS) has been a leader on the North Shore and in the Chicago region in creating a fostering environment for students not just to learn about technology but to apply what they learn by participating in projects both within school and through creative partnerships with other schools. LFCDS is the only independent private school participating in Advocacy Day, and three of its projects will be featured.

“The focus is less on the Technology and Innovation Lab and more on our students having agency and being able to make a difference in the community,” says Greg McDonough, Innovation Space Director at LFCDS. “So, our first graders identified problems that they found throughout the school and used the Innovation Lab is a tool to fix those problems.”

Annie Baird and Megan Dziekan are both firstgrade teachers at LFCDS, and they say the idea for the first graders’ project really stems from the notion that anyone can make change, regardless of age.

“The projects are the culminating act of a Social Studies Unit we rolled out this year called Change Makers,” Baird says. “Our first graders studied a variety of change makers from the past and present day and their investigation into change makers led them to the realization that anyone could take action and make a positive change in their community.”

One of the projects the first grade Change Makers undertook was to take a look at food waste in the LFCDS dining hall. Food is served family style, and they noticed that while some tables were calling for second helpings, other tables weren’t finishing their first portions. So, they created an awareness campaign to make sure that students went to other tables to see if there was leftover food before they went up for a second bowl.

“Being mindful of food waste, and for it to come from their perspective, I thought was very interesting,” Dzekian says. “They made posters and made announcements during lunch period. They also made a video.” Throughout the course of the project, Dzekian says,

the students used technology in a very authentic and age-appropriate ways.

“The students weren’t just using tech to use it, but they were making videos, printing signs on the 3D printer for a purpose. It’s been really inspiring to see them take action in this way,” says Baird. “Megan and I are both firm believers that sometimes the youngest children can have the most impact on others if we give them the tools and the opportunity and time to do so.”

Student volunteerism through partnerships with other schools is a big component of efforts at LFCDS to provide a well-rounded education for its students, and that extends to technology and innovation.

LFCDS presentations at Advocacy Day will feature two partnerships—one with Roberti Community and one with North Chicago Community Center—that demonstrate how what LFCDS students are learning about innovation can benefit the broader community.

Roberti Community House (RCH) runs a variety of programs in an underserved area of Waukegan. These include culinary, gardening, sewing, and afterschool programs, among others. LFCDS has had a strong partnership with RCH’s afterschool programs for the past five years, and students have made monthly visits to RCH since the start of the school year. Students from LFCDS and a student who benefitted from the school’s partnership with RCH will jointly present at this year’s Advocacy Day.

“This partnership has led to a special community forming between students, teachers, and volunteers at both organizations,” McDonough says. “Pam Fisher, RCH’s volunteer coordinator, has been instrumental in our partnership.”

LFCDS also has a tight relationship with North Chicago Community Partners and Forrestal Elementary School in North Chicago. Each month, LFCDS teachers and seventh and eighth graders visit a different Forrestal teacher/classroom and, depending on the topic, bring along tools to enhance Forrestal students’ learning experience. Faculty lead the activities, but the students play a pivotal role that day in the classroom.

“The student piece is nice because they are able to get outside their little community and go to the wider community and make connections with younger students,” says Marlo LaCorte, a Junior Kindergarten teacher at LFCDS. “They are entering another school and forming relationships with students who have different backgrounds.”

Seventh and eighth graders as well as a student from Forrestal will be presenting on Advocacy Day. For the LFCDS students, it’s a great opportunity to show leadership and demonstrate the value of civic participation.

“I think we are interested in instilling the idea that being part of a larger community is vital,” LaCorte says. “This partnership with North Chicago Community Partners helps with that because it gives us the opportunity to go beyond our own school.”

Fort Sheridan Historic House Tour

In 1923, renowned architect George Maher and his son, Philip, were commissioned to build a pair of connecting houses for two sisters on Chestnut Avenue in Wilmette.

Helen Bichl and Dorothy Schager were the daughters of German immigrants Wendelin and Agnes Seng, who built a thriving furniture hardware business in the 1870s. Helen’s husband, Gerard, and Dorothy’s husband, Edward, both worked for the family business.

Together, the pair of palatial Italianate homes formed a family estate complete with a shared swimming pool, sunken gardens connected by a bridge, and a tennis court symmetrically located for each sister’s family. Those who are familiar with Stuart Cohen and Susan Benjamin’s 2004 tome North Shore Chicago: Houses of the Lakefront Suburbs, 1890-1940 may recognize one of those “sister houses” from the book’s cover—a home that today has been lovingly restored to its flapper-era splendor.

On May 17, that century-old gem will be one of four architecturally unique and aesthetically beautiful North Shore residences featured on the Community House Woman’s Board’s third annual Home Tour. Proceeds from the event, which includes a luncheon at the Community House, benefit Winnetka’s nonprofit Community House and its many programs.

“While I am very proud of all the homes we have had on the tour, this residence in particular is just outstanding,” says Kate Kligora, who is chairing the tour and luncheon. “It has been meticulously preserved back to its original grandeur and the former owners kept a number of historical touches, including the fountain in the sunroom—which was the

height of fashion in the 1920s.”

Though the original pool is no longer there, the historic tennis court remains intact and a new pool and pool house has been added to complement the home. But according to Kligora, perhaps the most poignant part of the home’s story is how the couple who restored it chose the next family to be its steward.

“It was owned for quite a long time by the family who painstakingly preserved it and kept a lot of historical details,” she says. “They chose to sell the house to the couple next door because they knew they’d keep the history intact.”

That couple was Cassie and George Hartman, who recall having drinks with their neighbors on the home’s historic patio when

they first moved in.

“We had a great time getting to know each other and got a small peek at their beautiful home. They had fantastic stories about the history of the mirror ‘sister houses’, the epic restoration project, and even Barack Obama giving a speech in their backyard,” says Cassie. “Less than a year later, we were on the verge of kicking off a major renovation of the house we had bought. The same neighbors invited us over one weekend and dropped some hints that they were considering selling.”

George adds that they told the couple that while they hoped they would stay, if they left, he and Cassie would be thrilled to purchase their home.

“They were a bit shocked that we were ready to pivot from our renovation plans, but liked the idea of passing stewardship of the home over to our family,” he says. “Coincidentally, our three kids were the same age that theirs were when they moved in over 20 years ago.”

One of the first things George and Cassie noticed about the property was the sunken garden.

“The shared arbor between the two homes looks over nearly three acres between the two properties. The open space resembles a park and sometimes people mistake it for one and

unknown secrets from the past.

“Something that I found fascinating ... and a bit eerie ... was that the original family that constructed the home (the parents of the sisters) lived immediately next door while it was being built,” he explains. “That's the very same home that we lived in for a year before moving next door into our current one. So, we've lived in two of their homes now, not just one!”

"Even though you can look at the Community House from a programming perspective and it can look a lot like a park district, it is actually an independent nonprofit organization that does not receive any support from local taxes," she adds. “That’s why the Woman’s Board exists and why the Home Tour exists.”

unknowingly walk through our yard,” says Cassie.

“It is quiet and calm, and there is just a sense of peace from the moment you walk into the garden—even with a bunch of kids running around.”

Inside, the home’s character and unique historic features are just as impressive. The original fur vault is still tucked away in the hall. The vintage canvas fire hose remains intact on the second floor, along with the Deegan chimes for calling dinner (Downton Abbey style) and ice water taps in the bedrooms.

She has worked closely with the couple in preparation for the tour, along with the generous owners of the three other North Shore properties that lucky participants will get to walk through on May 17.

“We also have a unique new construction house in Glencoe, a grand 1934 Georgian in Winnetka, and another transformed 1990s build,” says Kligora. “That one is a great example of what you can do with creativity and vision in a smaller footprint.”

As an added bonus, this year’s tour offers the opportunity to meet the architect, designer, or builder behind the vision in each home. Kligora explains that the Woman’s Board began hosting the Home Tour in 2022

As for the Hartmans, they are thrilled to be able to share their new home with the community and support the Community House’s fundraising efforts.

“The previous owner had put so much care into preserving the integrity of the house, and we are invested in doing the same as we live here,” says George. “We feel extremely fortunate that a few random events turned into us living here. This house has such an interesting story and we get to enjoy it and share it with our family and friends every day.”

After seven cross-country moves and several years living in Stockholm, JESSICA MONTGOMERY and her family decided to call Winnetka home. Originally from the East Coast, she and her husband met at Virginia Tech. As their careers started to unfold, the couple found themselves traveling the world. Montgomery began her career in education, but a passion for meeting new people led to a pivot into the admissions field. She works in Evanston at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and is often inspired by the students. She and her husband, Brian, have two wonderful boys and an Aussiedoodle named Piper. Across their moves, the two have strived to build connections with those around them and invest in their communities. Montgomery, therefore, is actively involved at North Shore Country Day School and was honored to serve on the Executive Committee of the North Shore Board of the Northwestern Settlement, a cause that resonates with her because she believes outdoor experiences are transformative for children and teens. She co-chaired the nonprofit’s 2023 House in the Woods Gala, “An Evening Under the Stars,” raising money to fund outdoor STEM education programs and a traditional summer camp experience for the children and youth of Chicago. Pausing from her many commitments, Montgomery shares how she stays current in her professional and personal worlds.

On a trip to Europe, I devoured The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles. Towles is an extraordinary storyteller and this book was full of unexpected twists and turns. Despite its length, I didn’t want the story to end. Up next is Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver, which was recommended by a friend.

THE FALL GUY

Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt star in a “boring” film about the life of a stunt man that lacks chemistry and direction.

There’s nobody in the movie business more witless, boring, and not worth making a movie about than stuntmen, and an uneven, unwatchable, and unwisely financed time waster called The Fall Guy proves it.

David Leitch, who directed the abominable Bullet Train, is a former stunt man who should know enough about the job to bring something fresh and interesting enough to the subject to prove me wrong, but he fails at every turn. Drew Pearce, who can forever be blamed for writing junk like Hotel Artemis and Iron Man 3, obviously needs a new word processor.

And Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, the two stars, hot on the heels of their hits, Barbie and Oppenheimer, have no chemistry. Instead of romance they seem to be in love

only with themselves alone—offering no balance between action stunts and desperate silliness.

They’re pretty and pretty boring at the same time.

Based on an old TV show from the 1980s with Lee Majors, the brainless plot, deadly direction, and limpid performances add up to a messy botch put together with school glue.

Gosling plays a Hollywood daredevil named Colt who is down for the count after a near-fatal accident on his last film that resulted in a serious spinal injury. But nothing that bad can stop him from heading for Australia on an 18-hour flight with bolts in his back for a new film and a reunion with his ex-girlfriend (Emily Blount).

He can hardly stand up, much less walk, but he gets blown up, shot, crashed through windows and dropped from heights that would give Superman nose bleeds. Worse still, he discovers he’s been set up as a fall guy to cover the death of another stunt man. From there the plot is too complicated to keep interest focused, and if you feel like you’ve seen all of the computerized camera actions in the stunt sequences before, you have— in movies with more originality and a lot more fun.

Lights! Camera! Action! And get out fast.

The next two hours and six minutes are total torture. I liked the reviewer who wrote “Your cat could write this movie.”

Former Lake Forest Country Day School teacher Rachel Diaz is raring to go—and to make the grade— as the school’s Head of Lower School.

Lake Forest Country Day School’s Head of Lower School-elect, Rachel Diaz, sits in a room near the school’s library and can’t stop smiling. She’s sharing how well her 3-year-old son, River, communicates.

“He’s at that age,” Diaz says, “when everything to him makes him say either, ‘Wow!’ or, ‘That’s so cool!’ I love hearing his cute, little voice. I’ll open the door to his room in the morning, and he’ll say, ‘Oh hi, Mom!’ I once told him we’re going to go on a family walk, and River’s response was, ‘That sounds good!’

“Having a 3-year-old,” the Lake Bluff resident adds, “makes you look at the world differently.”

When Rachel Diaz wakes up on July 1, she’ll be as wide-eyed and as excited as her only child because the “elect” in her job title will have disappeared on that morning.

“I am not worried in the least that I’ll ever feel disconnected from our students or our teachers in my new role,” says the 35-year-old Diaz, who served as a fourth-grade teacher at Lake Forest Country Day School from 20172020 and received the school’s Yvonne Banks Caring Teacher Award in 2019. “I never felt that way as Assistant Head of Lower School and Early Childhood (2021-2024), because our school is such a small, tight one. We’re all about collaboration and partnerships here. We’re all in this together—students, teachers, staff, and families.”

Lake Forest Country Day School (for students age 2 to grade eight) opened its doors for the first time in 1888. Its mission is a comprehensive one: “Inspired teaching, academic rigor, attention to individual needs, a commitment to responsible citizenship—these principles infuse every aspect of life at Lake Forest Country Day School and define our dedication to producing students of strong character with a passion for learning.”

Born in Park Ridge, Diaz attended John Hersey High School in Arlington Heights where performing as a member of the school’s show choir, OnStage, and in musical theatre meant the world to her. The men in her life— her father, Ted, and her husband, Tristan—are

also JHHS graduates.

Ted and Rachel’s mother, Valerie, have lived in Lake Bluff since 2014. Both parents have back grounds in painting. Ted worked for a business that became the ad agency Simple Truth.

“I thought about going into the family business,” says Diaz, who completed an internship at Simple Truth. “But it wasn’t for me; my gut feeling told me so.”

Diaz changed her major from Art History to Elementary Education before the start of her junior year at DePaul University and knew right away that she had made the right decision, thanks to Dr. Frank Tavano, who taught an Introduction to Education course at DePaul.

You take care of people in a school’s setting.

ing by relying only on the balanced literacy practice,” Diaz says, adding the school has been examining different approaches to teaching the vital skill since last July. “The pendulum is swinging to more of a scientific approach, to more intentional instruction. There are some wonderful parts of balanced literacy that we’ll keep. What excites me is knowing a combination of approaches should make more of our students fall in love with reading.”

Diaz has also been co-chairing, with parent and Lake Forest Country Day School Board of Trustees Member David Neighbours, the school’s Strategic Design process since last September.

“We have a mission statement and core values,” she says. “But a school can always become a better version of itself. What we have going for us is our school’s standing; we’re coming from a position of strength. Our students are happy, our partnership with parents continues to be strong, and we retain faculty.”

The school’s team of first-grade teachers launched a Changemakers program this school year. The students have studied Martin Luther King Jr., 2014 Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Pakistani education activist Malala Yousafzai, and Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg, among others.

“He was so full of life in the classroom and super passionate,” Diaz recalls. “The anecdotes he shared were fun ones. I had fun in his classroom. The most important thing I learned from him was what a teacher should do to form meaningful relationships with students. I also learned the importance of classroom management and creating an environment of routines that establishes the way the show will be run.”

grade-school teacher and an instructional coach (kindergarten through fifth grade) for a combined seven years at CICS West Belden, a Chicago charter school. During her time there, the school received a grant from the Bill & Melanie Gates Foundation.

“It’s an unbelievable, highly innovative community,” says Diaz, who completed her master’s while working at the charter school. “It was hard for me to leave CICS West Belden. But I was ready for a change, and ready to move closer to my parents, when I applied for a position at Lake Forest Country Day School.”

What has her amped up for the 2024-2025 academic year is the prospect of implementing a different way to teach reading at Lake Forest Country Day School.

“These 6-year-olds in our school are now changemakers themselves,” Diaz says. “They’ve called for better hallway behavior. They want more plants in our greenhouse. They think students should eat more healthy snacks. That Changemakers unit was 100-percent teachermade, and I’m excited to help our teachers expand it to our second-, third- and fourthgrade students.”

Flash-forward to the first day of the 20242025 academic year at Lake Forest Country Day School. Among the new students in the school’s Early Childhood Center is a boy named River.

The over/under on the number of times Rachel Diaz’s son utters “Wow!” on that day is 125.
