BY MITCH HURST THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
The tradition continues! The 2023 Winnetka Community House Home Tour returns next Friday, May 19, and tickets sold out as we were going to press. Four beautiful homes will be open for touring in Wilmette, Glencoe, and Winnetka, and each offers a unique window into why the North Shore is home to some of the most sumptuous properties in the Midwest, if not the country.
Launched last year to continue a legacy of North Shore home tours that goes back generations, the event raises funds to supplement programs run by the Community House, including its children’s theater program, fitness center, and educational programs. The Community House has been providing services to local residents for more than a century.
The Home Tour is the brainchild of the Women’s Board, who saw an opening last year to take advantage of the long-standing tradition of home tours on the North Shore. The Women’s Board sponsors the Home Tour and other fundraising event for the Community House.
Winnetka resident Kate Kligora is this year’s Home Tour chair and also sits on the Women’s Board. She says just like other nonprofits that don’t receive public funding, the Community House relies on donations
from the community, corporations, and the funds raised during the Home Tour and other fundraisers.
“There’s no nonprofit in the community
Home Tour is aligned with the organization’s mission, which is to connect the community.
“The thing that I really love about the Home Tour and really all of the events that
school, some of which remain today.
“All of those things are foundational experiences. But I would also say that these kinds of events that really bring our community together are part of the connective tissue of the community of the North Shore, and the Community House itself,” Skalinder says. “When people are coming to go and visit all these beautiful homes, enjoying the day, and we're meeting designers and architects, it's a wonderful experience. Part of the wonderful experience is coming together with your friends and neighbors and having a great time connecting with each other.”
Skalinder touches on one of the features of the Home Tour. It’s not just about touring the homes but meeting the architects and designers who helped create them. Design sponsors include BBA Architects, Pam Maher Design, Next Level Custom Builders, Alexandra Kaehler Design, Red Spade Environments, JenMarie Interiors, and Abt.
that has the breadth of programs that the Community House has,” Kligora says.
Amy Skalinder has been Community House’s President since November of 2019, and helped steer the organization through the pandemic. Though it’s a fundraiser, Skalinder says the
the Women's Board does for Community House is a lot of what we do is bring people together,” Skalinder explains. “The kids have so many foundational experiences at the Community House. They find their confidence for the first time when they step out onto that stage and take on a role.”

appeal while still keeping the bones of the historic house.”
The Otis and Clark house in nestled at the top of one of the most desired streets in Winnetka and boasts beautiful landscaping and a unique barrel ceiling in the foyer that draws visitors into the home. Dramatic color and geometric design patterns are used throughout the house to highlight historically significant details.
A stunning English country style home built on Skokie Country Club’s golf course is another highlight of the tour, Kligora says. The estate embodies understated elegance with generous warmth. Treasured artifacts collected while the owners were living abroad in Asia are a decorative highlight in the home. Large windows flood the house with light and offer exceptional views.
“The house that was previously on the property was torn down, but its slate roof was preserved and is used on the new home, so it doesn’t look like typical new construction,” Kligora says. “They had to add some to the roof, and it all matches amazingly.”
A once overlooked home in Winnetka that has been entirely transformed into a sophisticated family abode is also included in the Home Tour lineup. The interior designer who bought the home and served as her own client undertook an exercise of creativity and curating limitless options. Inside and out, the home has been completely renovated to reflect the homeowners’ vision of livability and style for their young family.
“It’s a little jewel box,” Kligora says. “The home was built in 1938 and there was not a lot going on in the ’30s architecturally. But this designer took it and has really made it into a sophisticated but really livable house for her and her three young kids.”
Rounding out the tour is a home built in 1907, an elegant three-story brick Georgian manor. The historic local landmark in Wilmette was originally on the lakefront and now offers beautiful views of the Baha’i Temple. Lovingly restored in

BACK TO THE FUTURE
From 1990s fashions inspired by characters on Friends to Dr. Marten boots, the style decade you forgot you loved is back in a big way.
BY LEXIE KNOX THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Research has revealed the most searched for fashion decade in each U.S. state, and in Illinois, the most searched for and favorite fashion decade is the 1990s. And while you may wonder what it is about '90s fashion that is causing locals such intrigue, a drive by New Trier High School or the shop windows in Highland Park or Lake Forest will remind you of the style decade you forgot you loved.
One only needs to tune in to an episode of Friends to appreciate the decade we fail to credit for great style. Even today, Rachel, Phoebe, and Monica are enviably trendy in their mini-skirts, tank dresses, and high waisted jeans. While the '80s were all about neon overload, stacked Swatches, glossy lips, and Reebok hightops, the '90s brought the return of adult dressing with a tailored look of casual sophistication. The Aqua Net-suspended hairstyles of the '80s were replaced by smooth tamed manes like “The Rachel,” and broad blonde highlights graced the manes of Hollywood stars like Alicia Silverstone and Drew Barrymore. Chunky bangs replaced teased tresses, and the daring went for razor sharp pixie cuts and layers upon layers. Long skirts and crop tops were paired with Dr. Marten boots and leather bombers, and the Adidas sweatsuit made its first real appearance since the 1970s.
Retail Insight Network published in November 2022 that Dr. Martens reported 13 percent revenue growth for first half of fiscal year 2023. In fact, brands that first gained mainstream consumer popularity in the 1990s have shown
Paris and Gossip Girl. Gucci collaborated with Adidas in 2022, and back is the sleek matching track suit adorned by hipsters in the 1990s.
Fanny packs of the '90s have actually never gone out of style, but the bright nylon-colored pouches have been replaced with flat, tailored leather looks that are worn on the front of the body instead of the back. They have been reimagined by designer brands like Loewe, Louis Vuitton, and Chanel. Gucci introduced a “tool bag” waist purse that has gone through several iterations over the past three decades, but what has remained the same is the fact that almost every designer agrees that the fanny pack is here to stay. Not only has the original Gucci belt bag made a comeback (as seen on Kendall Jenner, and Kim Kardashian), The Vintage Bar reports that “In 2018, fanny pack sales accounted for more than 25 percent of accessory sales growth.”
Make-up trends in the 1990s also made their mark on the decade and have returned with a vengeance. Bobby Brown debuted her make-up line with a series of lipsticks at Bergdorf Goodman in 1991, and matte brick colored lips replaced the pale pinks and purples of the `80s. Today, Kylie Jenner has a lip color called “'90s bby,”which is a shiny lacquer in a pigmented mauve, Color Pop Cosmetics has a '90s vibe lip set, and Clinique’s 1990s “black honey almost lipstick” continues to be a cult classic to this day.
Although first introduced in 1975, the French manicure became the trend in the '90s, as did glitter nails, over-thetop designs, and acrylic nail tips. Botti Nail and Spa in Lake Bluff says that today, the most requested manicures are French, and various designs painted on long acrylic nail tips.
Turlington, and Heidi Klum, to name a few, all have daughters who are gracing the runways and acting as influencers on social media outlets. These modern day models have all recently ventured out in looks that have left teens and twentysomethings routing through their mother’s closets hoping to find ancient, stashed away pieces.
It is often said that if you wore a trend the first time around, you don't get to wear it the second time around; but the '90s may beg to differ.
a huge resurgence in the past few years. Prada’s Re-Edition 1990s bags sell out before they hit the shelves, and their legendary original bucket hat has been made popular again both on the runway, and on television shows like Emily in
If there is any question as to the how and why the fashions and styles of the 1990s have made such a vigorous comeback, a browse through Instagram will quickly make it clear.
It’s no coincidence that the '90s re-emergence has come at a time when the supermodels of the '90s now have supermodels of their own. Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss, Christy
While inarguably the dreaded one-shoulder overalls and oversized plaid grunge shirts should be permanently retired, fashionistas of all ages should grab their Prada nylon Tessuto bag, a couple of scrunchies, and head over to Hansa Coffee Roasters in Lake Bluff.
Because even in 2023, hanging out with Friends is never out of style.

BY MITCH HURST THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
During the ‘80s, you couldn’t flip on your car radio without hearing a song by Daryl Hall and John Oates—from “Maneater” and “One on One” to “You Make My Dreams,” and “Kiss On My List.” But while those may be his best-known songs (the radio will do that), Oates has never stopped making music, some in collaboration with Oates and some on his own.
Oates will be bringing his considerable talents to the Genesee Theatre in Waukegan on May 25. It’s an intimate, strippeddown show; just Oates with an acoustic guitar and a percussionist he’s performed with for a long time.
He started releasing new singles last November—songs composed during the pandemic. The releases were his way of adapting to the new realities of how music is distributed and consumed, which has undergone a complete revolution since he and Hall were releasing their hits in the ‘80s.
“As a way to get (the songs) there, I decided I’d give it a total digital distribution since people aren't really buying records or anything physical, like CDs,” Oates said during a phone interview from his home in Nashville last week. “I've never done that before, so it's a whole new world for me and it's been an education for me and interesting to see how I can recalibrate my old school musician’s mind into the new reality.”
Oates is now 75. He was learning songs at the age of 4 and has been collaborating with Hall since they both were in their late teens. Now he’s says it’s time to do something different and to refresh his creative juices. He wanted to challenge himself and also do something that amplified the essential set of skills that a musician should have. Hence the intimate setting for his current tour.
“There's no better way to showcase that than to strip everything away and just appear with your instrument and your voice, and that's what I decided to do,” he says. “Sometimes I bring another guitarist with me and sometimes, in this case, I'm bringing a percussionist with me, a guy who’ve I played with for many, many years. It's about as real as you can get. The concept was to bring what I do in my living room onto the stage.”
The solo shows give Oates plenty of freedom to tell stories or change the set list on a whim. He says he can adapt to the evening and do anything he wants because it’s all on him.
“It's really a great challenge and it's really satisfying to be able to do this. It’s hard
HITS ON HIS LIST
LIFESTYLE & ARTS 14 | SATURDAY MAY 13 | SUNDAY MAY 14 2023 THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
John Oates, half of the rock legend Hall & Oates franchise, brings his new solo music to Genesee Theatre on May 25.
to find the type of performance and the type of live show that gives (the audience) something different, something maybe they don't expect, and also gives them an insight into how songwriters think,” says Oates. “About where these songs come from and what was some of the inspiration. A lot of times the stories are very unusual and not perhaps what people might think.”
Oates has been on the road for a while now and he says what he’s found is that if you tell the back story and you set up the actual new songs with a context, people hear them differently, almost as songs they actually already know.
“It's really an interesting thing and something I discovered in the process of doing this show. So, that's what I do,” he says “I do get to play a lot of new material and I play some hits as well, but it's really satisfying. You know the old cliché, ‘What’s the last thing you want to hear at a classic rock concert? Here's a song from our new album’.”
One of the questions that always pops up with musicians that have been in successful bands—or duos, in this case—is the difference between collaborating with others and having the freedom to produce music on your own. Oates says he doesn’t
prefer one over the other.
“There's nothing more satisfying than to have an inspiration. You get this inspiration for an idea and to be able to actually make it come to life on your own, all of a sudden there’s something that comes out of nowhere and you go. Wow’,” he says. “But when two people are really in sync ... when two people really are going for the same thing and on a roll, feeding off each other, there's a real energy and a beauty to that as well.”
Oates’s parents were the World War II generation, so he grew up in the swing music era listening to big-band records. His own inspiration is pretty old school. He opens the current show with that song he sang for his parents when he was just four, “For Me and My Gal,” which was written in 1917, but made famous by Judy Garland in 1942 in the film with the same name.
“I open the show and I just say, ‘Look, this is the first song I ever learned and I’m going to play it for you’,” he says. “It kind of sets the table for an interesting evening that perhaps they might not expect.”
John Oates plays Genesee Theatre in Waukegan on May 25. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit geneseetheatre.com.

ALMOND SABLÉS with Lavender Ice Cream
BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Sablé is French for “sandy,” an apt description for the delicate crumbly texture of these buttery, almond-enriched cookies that originated in Sablé-sur-Sarthe, France. Also known as Sablé Breton, or French butter cookies, they are cousins to shortbread but are shaped into rounds rather than fingers. As I have been working more with natural sweeteners, these are made with maple sugar, rather than the usual cane sugar, in a recipe adapted from British chef Dione Lucas, the first female graduate of Le Cordon Bleu.
The luscious lavender ice cream is a snap to prepare without need for an ice cream maker—the perfect Mother’s Day brunch addition. You’ll just need whipping cream, whole milk steeped with culinary-grade lavender, vanilla paste, and sweetened condensed milk. The lavender flowers add little pops of flavor and a beautiful scent. NOTE: You’ll want to prepare the ice cream the day before serving—it takes six hours to freeze.
INGREDIENTS
FOR LAVENDER ICE CREAM
(Makes 3 pints)
• 1 cup whole milk
• 3 teaspoons culinary-grade dried lavender
• 2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste
• 2 pints (four cups) heavy whipping cream
• 2, 14-oz cans sweetened condensed milk
FOR ALMOND SABLÉS
• 1 cup blanched slivered almonds, divided (half for the dough; half to top cookies)
• 1 ½ sticks butter, slightly softened
• ½ cup maple sugar
• 1/8 teaspoon salt
• 2 tablespoons spiced rum
• 2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
• 1 large egg yolk mixed with 1 teaspoon water
METHOD
FOR LAVENDER ICE CREAM
Prepare milk: In a small pot over medium heat, warm milk to a simmer. Remove from heat. Stir in 3 teaspoons dried culinary-grade lavender and vanilla paste. Pour into a bowl. Press a sheet of plastic wrap into the bowl to come in contact with the surface of the milk. Refrigerate for two hours, while you make the cookies.
Finish ice cream: In the bowl of a stand mixer with a whisk attachment, whip heavy whipping cream to peaks. Using a spatula and an over/under motion, fold in the sweetened condensed milk. Stir in the lavender milk. Pour mixture into three shallow two-cup containers with lids. Press plastic wrap in contact with the surface of the cream. Cover with lids. Freeze until firm (about six hours).
FOR ALMOND SABLÉS
Set oven rack to the center position. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grind ½ cup of the blanched almond slivers very fine. (A well-cleaned spice or coffee grinder works well for this, pulse in short bursts.) Set aside.
In the bowl of a standing mixer with the paddle attachment, whip the butter until fluffy. Add the maple sugar and pinch of salt and whip again until smooth. Add the rum and ground almonds. Beat again until incorporated. Working a scoop at a time, with mixer on low speed, beat in the flour, scraping the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed. Beat until all flour has been added and the dough is smooth.
Spread a clean work surface with plastic wrap. Scoop dough onto plastic. Gather up the corners of the plastic and squeezing through it, work and knead the dough until there are no crumbles. Place the dough on your work surface, knead just a bit more. Shape into a ball and divide in half. Spread worksurface with parchment paper. Flatten half of the dough into a rectangle on the paper, cover with plastic wrap and roll out into 1/8 inch thickness. Leaving dough rectangle on parchment, transfer to a cookie sheet and refrigerate. Repeat with remaining ball of dough.
Once dough is well chilled, use a 1½ inch round cutter to cut dough into circles. Place cookies close together on parchment-lined sheet pans. Brush with egg wash. Sprinkle remaining ½ cup of slivered almonds onto tops of cookies. Press nuts into cookies. Brush again with more egg wash. Bake in 350-degree oven for 13 to 15 minutes until golden brown. Cool cookies on wire racks.

BANKSY STRIKES AGAIN
An image conceived when the legendary Banksy paid a clandestine visit to the Barbican in Central London in the early hours of September 17, 2017, is going up for auction at New York-based Phillips with an estimated value between $8 and $12 million. “Banksquiat. Boy and Dog in Stop and Search,” which has the pseudonymous British street artist’s famous signature on the lower right, comes with a certificate of authenticity. The first iteration of “Banksquiat. Boy and Dog in Stop and Search” remains in situ at the Barbican as a response to the opening of “Basquiat: Boom for Real.” This 2018 version was executed on panel (acrylic and wax marker on birch wood), featuring two figures from the late Jean-Michel Basquiat’s 1982 painting, Boy and Dog in a Johnnypump, being frisked by members of London’s Metropolitan Police. Basquiat’s boy and dog are rendered in the late artist’s painterly style, while the police officers are executed using Banksy’s signature blackand-white stencil technique. A collaboration beyond space and time, the work unites two street art giants from either side of the Atlantic. To find out more or place a bid, visit phillips. com/detail/banksy/NY010323/13.

GOOD “BONES”
BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
In 1996, as Highland Park High School’s varsity football captain and starting quarterback Michael Bonamarte IV was ordered to do something in a game for the first time in his career.
Then-Giants head coach Jay Geerdes eyed Bonamarte on the sideline and told him, “Go out there, ‘Bones,’ and return the kickoff,” near the end of the first half of a game against Niles West High School.
Bonamarte, who was already having a productive day as HP’s signal caller, caught the kickoff near the goal line, sprinted up the middle, and didn’t stop running until he had scored a 100-yard touchdown.
It’s a state record that can never be broken because a prep high school football player isn’t allowed to return a kickoff from anywhere in the end zone.
Flash forward 27 years to March 2023. A trial attorney obtained a $40 million verdict in a medical malpractice birth injury case. It’s Illinois’ largest medical malpractice verdict ever outside of Cook County.
The record-setting lawyer is none other than the record-setting special teamer who burned Niles West decades ago.
Bonamarte, now a Winnetka resident and a managing partner at Levin & Perconti in Chicago, sits in a booth at Country Kitchen in Highland Park on a recent morning. The former HPHS three-sport athlete (also basketball and baseball) looks around and smiles.
“I have a lot of good memories of this place and of this town,” says the soft-spoken 44-year-old, who later exits the booth briefly to greet one of his former HPHS baseball teammates, Andy Engle. “I’ll always be grateful for the solid group of friends I made in high school.”
But nothing will ever top family in Bonamarte’s wonderful life. Not that breathless football mark. Nor that colossal verdict. His late great-grandfather, who lived to be 98, was a fingerprint expert with the Highland Park Police Department, and his grandfather, who’s 91 years old and lives in Highland Park, served as Highland Park’s Police Chief for 38 years. And Michael F. Bonamarte III was a Lake County attorney who died of either a stroke or a heart attack at the age of 50 in 2006.
“My father was a remarkable man,” says Michael F. Bonamarte IV, who, in memory of
his father, launched a foundation that raised awareness and funding research (around

“I love our talks before I say goodnight to her each night. She’s happy, engaging, and sweet. Just the other night, she told me, ‘Daddy, make me laugh.’ It didn’t take me long to make her do that.”
There’s also a tender side to Bonamarte, the attorney. While working a case involving a woman who has fond memories of dancing with her late father to a certain song, Bonamarte listened to Bob Carlisle’s “Butterfly Kisses.” To many, it’s a tune about
“I looked at the lyrics,” Bonamarte says. “The song also touches on the daughter’s perspective of the father-daughter relation-
At a Monday afternoon meeting with his colleagues at Levin & Perconti, Bonamarte played a video of the 1993 speech that the late Jim Valvano delivered on the ESPY Awards show. The former North Carolina State men’s basketball coach announced the formation of the V Foundation for Cancer Research in it and uttered unforgettable lines, including “Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up,” and “If you laugh, you think, you cry, that’s a full day.”
Valvano died of glandular cancer shortly
“I’ve listened to that speech so many times, and it never loses its power,” Bonamarte says. “I wanted to present that to our lawyers because it’s filled with important life messages.”
Bonamarte was recently selected by Crain’s as one of Chicago’s 2023 Notable Litigators & Trial Attorneys. A past president of the Justinian Society of Lawyers (JSL), he will be awarded a JSL Mentorship Award on May 18.
“I heard a saying with a lot of ‘p’ words not too long ago,” Bonamarte says. “It stressed preparation, perseverance, persistence, and passion. You can’t go wrong if you practice all of those, no matter what you do for a living.”
Bonamarte later shares another memory of his late father. The son was either a fourth- or a fifth grader at the time.

rious,” says Bonamarte, who worked as a bartender at the Nite ’N Gale in Highwood during his law school years. “I’m lucky. Right now Gabriella Grace is interested in sharks
“I was getting ready for bed when he entered my room, sat down, and told me something I’ll never forget,” Bonamarte recalls. “He said, ‘Everything always works out, and your daddy loves you.’”
