The son of a man who helped resolve the Major League Baseball umpires’ strike in 1979 has written a book about his father. It’s a home run—if you’re into reading something compelling and funny on practically every page of Glencoe native and prolific author Rich Cohen’s The Adventures of Herbie Cohen: World’s Greatest Negotiator (Farrar, Straus, and Giroux,
2022, 227 pages), a memoir/biography which was released on May 10. “(My father) wore sweat suits and his Lafayette letterman’s jacket on the weekends,” Cohen, 53, writes of Herbie, 89, when the Cohen family lived in Libertyville before it moved to Glencoe when Rich was 4. “He greeted strangers in town, stood in line with the cars at the bank drivethrough—a human among machines—(and) shouted across the street to friends the way he’d shouted to Inky, Bucko, and Who Ha (childhood friends from Brooklyn).
“Everybody got a kick out of him back then,” Cohen, now living in Ridgefield, Connecticut, adds during a phone interview. “He’s hilarious and the best storyteller I know. People would ask him, ‘Where are you from?’ He’d always say, in his Brooklyn accent, ‘Cheyenne, Wyoming.’ It was his running joke. Jaws will drop. Eyes will widen. Gasps will break silence. But the “wow factor” won’t be limited to interior settings at four Winnetka abodes during The Home Tour on May 20. The event is a new fundraising event for the Community House in Winnetka—a unique 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has played a special role on the North Shore, having offered opportunities to find friendship, belonging, and community spirit in a home away from home, for more than a century—without support from local taxes. One of the exquisite North Shore residences on the inspiring tour—a modern Tudor lakefront home in the ravine area— features striking repairs that the homeowner
that nearly matched the length of the steep backyard bluff: diagnose the bluff ’s slope and arrange for the transport of materials via marine access only; add tram landings on tableland, mid-level wall, and beach terrace; install quartzite stones to prevent erosion of the toe of the bluff; create new drainage; enable earth retention with walls; and prevent future erosion through environmentally conscious landscaping, including native plantings. What triggered the damage to the bluff and shoreline? “Three consecutive wet years,” says CNM Development Owner Jeff Tondola, a licensed home inspector and seasoned construction professional who grew up in Glenview and counts Dr. Charles Shabica—Emeritus Professor of Earth Science at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago—as one of his inspirations. “Climate change probably had something to do with that, since we’ve seen swings in the water level of Lake Michigan.”

Our neighbors, on both sides, were amazing; we worked with them because they were doing similar projects.” The Home Tour attendees also will get to view a unique Craftsman on the Historic Register, a modern Belgian farmhouse, and a custom new construction build. In other words, prepare to drink in variety. Opportunities to marvel at beauty—what every Home Tour aspires to provide—will not be in short supply. But this inaugural Home Tour will have something extra, something special: a comeback story doubling as a conservation story.

made to the property’s failed bluff and eroded shoreline. “This will differentiate our tour beyond beautiful architecture and gorgeous décor, though, of course, we have that too,” says Home Tour Chair Kate Kligora of the Community House Winnetka Woman’s Board. “The project is a great example of the responsibility lakefront owners are taking to protect the Lake Michigan shoreline through enormous investments. What they’re doing is beneficial to all of us in that they’re making sure our beaches maintain their beauty.” “It’s community service,” she adds. “It’s being a good community member.” The homeowner tapped Gurnee-based CNM Development and Kenosha, Wisconsin-based Thomas Nordloh Associates to tackle an intricate bluff restoration that started in 2019 and finished in November 2021. Among the items on the “To Do” list

“It was a daunting project, yes, with engineers and contactors working together and considering our company is as small (force of four) as it is,” he adds. “I was proud that we could figure it all out. The end result was a really clean bluff. It should last 100 years.” Tom Nordloh, owner of Thomas Nordloh Associates, has been a registered landscape architect for 35 years. He also invented a machine for erosion control. He’s part architect, part artist. “I had to use both sides of my brain for this undertaking,” Nordloh says. “But, while it’s good to be creative, you have to also make sure that the creation will work. I enjoyed the challenge of working to restore a bluff that was failing. I also enjoyed working with Jeff. He has an innate ability to look at a slope and see things most can’t see. He has a wealth of knowledge.” “You know what would be great? If those attending the Home Tour could see ‘before’ pictures of the back of the house,” Nordloh

of negotiation. The former Allstate and Sears employee advised Jimmy Carter during the Iran hostage crisis in 1980 and 1981. Companies and governmental bodies hired the serial lecturer as a negotiating strategy consultant. And, for his debut as a published author, he wrote the groundbreaking 1980 book You Can Negotiate Anything while holed up for eight months in a cramped office in his Glencoe basement. “He said goodbye to us one morning, went down there, and stayed down there until he’d finished,” says Cohen, a New Trier High School graduate who has written a slew of books, including Tough Jews: Fathers, Sons, and Gangster Dreams; Lake Effect, Sweet and Low: A Family Story; Monsters: The 1985 Bears and the Wild Heart of Football; and Pee Wees: Confessions of a Hockey Parent. “My dad drank pots and pots of coffee and ate nothing but lettuce and bread each day. He wrote the book by hand, using a calligraphy pen and legal pads.” It was rejected by 18 publishing companies before the late author and independent publisher Lyle Stuart accepted it. The book isn’t a business book, or a self-help book, or a humor book, or a memoir. “It’s all of those, and it became a publishing phenomenon,” says Rich, who was born at Lake Forest Hospital and is the youngest of Herbie and the late Ellen’s three children. “It was written for regular people, not executives. It helps people who are
afraid to negotiate the price of a car at a dealership, or for people who think the price of dishwasher is the price they have to pay for it. Everybody has power. My dad’s strong belief is, ‘Power is based on perception; if you think you got it, you got it, even if you don’t got it.’ “His lessons in the book,” he adds, “are about the same thing: empowerment.” In 2003 Herbie Cohen penned his second book, Negotiate This! The first line in Herb Cohen’s first book: “Your real world is a giant negotiating table, and like it or not, you’re a participant.”

An anecdote to illustrate a rather unusual from of negotiating, featuring a 9-year-old, 50-pound Rich Cohen, follows shortly thereafter. Rich abhorred eating at restaurants, especially those with dark dining areas. So, to express his displeasure, he stood on a chair inside a Northbrook eatery and yelled, “This is a crummy restaurant!” The Cohen family left the restaurant. The message: even a fourth grader, who weighs about as much as a large bag of dog food, can get what he wants. “My dad didn’t take me to another restaurant for 10 years,” says Cohen, the father of four sons (Aaron, 17; Nate, 16; Micah, 14; and Elia, 6) with wife Jessica. Herbie Cohen’s first book reached No. 2 on the New York Times Bestseller list. The elder Cohen’s favorite saying is, “The secret of life is to care, but not that much.” Herbie Cohen essentially treats life’s moments as games, even the ones that appear dead-serious. If you approach a negotiation as if it were a game, his thinking goes, you’ll have a blast and be more successful. “He practices Jewish Buddhism,” the son says.
“He preaches engaged detachment. To him it’s important not to get fixated on a particular outcome. Always be willing to walk away—from the car, the house, the property. Once you see life as a game, and the things you strive for as no more than pieces in that game, you’ll become a much more effective player.” The son’s latest book also recounts his father’s lifelong friendship with television and radio host Larry King (born Lawrence Harvey Zeiger), who died in January 2021. They were 10-year-old classmates in New York when both got in trouble and thus had to serve as crossing guards. The pair argued while serving their punishments. Larry thought the time spent crossing kids on their way to school was worthless, a joke: Herbie did not. To prove it, Herbie held up his hand in the middle of Nineteenth Avenue, bringing traffic to stop. His hand stayed up for quite a while. Vehicles sat idle in a stretch of three blocks. “It’s a position with real power,” Herbie told Larry then. Like he did with each of his previous books, Rich let Herbie read The Adventures of Herbie Cohen: World’s Greatest Negotiator before it was published. “He liked 95 percent of it,” Rich says. “I’ll take that.” Rich Cohen will appear at The Book Stall to discuss his latest book on Wednesday, May 18, beginning at 6:30 p.m. It is free and open to the public. HOMEMADE POTATO CHIPS WITH EGG AND TRUFFLE OIL BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
For crispy decadent enjoyment, there is nothing better than homemade potato chips. Except, of
course, if you shake those chips in a bag with soft poached egg and finish with a drizzle of truffle oil and sprinkling of parsley. The chips are not difficult to make, but you’ll need a mandolin slicer to get perfectly thin potato slices. I use a waxed paper bag or parchment bag to shake the chips with the egg.
INGREDIENTS
METHOD
FOR CHIPS
MAKE CHIPS: Using the thinnest setting, slice potatoes with a mandolin slicer into a large bowl of ice water; separate slices. Preheat deep fat fryer to 325 degrees. Blot potato slices dry. Place a small amount of potato slices in fryer basket, then deep fry chips until golden brown. Remove chips to tray lined with paper toweling. Lightly salt chips to taste. Repeat with remaining potato slices.
• Large bowl of ice water • 3 large Idaho potatoes, skin on, wellscrubbed • 4 tsp salt (or to taste) • 4 tsp malt vinegar powder (OR substitute red wine vinegar powder) • 1 small bunch parsley, stems removed, minced to make 4 tsp • 2 tsp truffle oil FOR POACHED EGGS
• 4 large eggs • 1 tsp white vinegar

MAKE POACHED EGGS: Heat a large pot of water to boiling. Add vinegar. Stir water to create a vortex. Carefully break eggs into hot water and cook until white has just firmed up around the egg and the yolk is still very soft. Using a slotted spoon, Remove poached eggs to a bowl. ASSEMBLE: Fill waxed paper bag or parchment bag with potato chips (about 4 ounces per serving.) Add one poached egg and 1 tsp vinegar powder. Fold bag to close. Gently shake bag to combine egg with chips. Pour into a serving bowl and sprinkle with parsley and drizzle of truffle oil. Repeat for each serving.

WHAT’S COOKING? THE KENILWORTH COOKBOOK CLUB, THAT’S WHAT. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT INGREDIENT IN FOUNDER ALLISON MCENTEE’S FLOURISHING CLUB, THOUGH, HAS MORE TO DO WITH CONNECTIONS THAN IT DOES CONDIMENTS. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
The Kenilworth Cookbook Club has never been just about a cookbook. So says the founder, Winnetka resident Allison McEntee, 42, who is as frank and as fun-loving as they come. “Food and drink bring people together,” she says. “They always have. That’s why I started this (in 2018). People love to talk about a dish they found in a cookbook. But we’re mostly about connecting with neighbors and people from other North Shore towns. It’s a ‘gateway’ to making new friends. There’s a thirst for casual conversation in an informal setting. “Community,” McEntee adds, “is vital.” The Kenilworth Cookbook Club (KCC) is a group of women (323 and counting) that meets once a month in a home. Some are new moms. Others are first-year empty nesters, heads of households, or highly successful professionals—like McEntee, a mother of four and an marketer who has a background in broadcast sales and buying, integrated marketing, digital content, and e-commerce-led initiatives. “What continues to be consistent— and my favorite part of the KCC—is that no matter where we are in life, where we come from, or what we do, we all come together for one moment, one common interest: to gather, to connect, and to feast … together,” McEntee writes in KCC’s 2019 Community Cookbook, Kenilworth Cooks! Last December KCC staged its inaugural “Ladies Night,” after selling more than 200 tickets. The club donated all proceeds to Chicago-based New Moms, an organization that helps young moms experiencing poverty and homelessness by offering housing, job training, and family support. The second annual “Ladies Night” is in the planning stages. McEntee and her husband, Patrick, moved from Chicago to Winnetka in 2018 after Allison, a huge Christmas fan, checked out the Home Alone home on Lincoln Avenue. “If you know me, you know how much I love Christmas,” an animated McEntee says. “It’s my favorite season. It’s my season. As soon as I saw the Home Alone home, I thought, ‘This village is ideal,

beautiful. I then told my husband, ‘This is where we need to raise our kids.’ ” McEntee and eight of her friends met for the inaugural KCC gathering four years ago, with Ina Garten’s cookbook selected as the night’s inanimate star. “Everybody likes Ina, right?” McEntee says of the Food Network staple. Each month in 2022 is already booked with hosts for KCC get-togethers. KCC’s gathering this month, set for May 19, won’t be held at a home. But that hasn’t tem-

pered McEntee’s enthusiasm in the least. “Home” for the night, beginning at 7 p.m., will be Jen Morrow’s new JenMarie Interiors studio near the event’s partner, Great Coast Commons (414 Green Bay Road), in Kenilworth. Morrow opened the studio in April. “Our club is an outlet for moms, allowing them to bond while just being themselves,” McEntee says, adding KCC’s moms hail from all over the North Shore, including Wilmette, Highland Park, Evanston, Glencoe, and Northbrook. “You know what else the club does? It helps women find their crew.” McEntee grew up as an only child in Marietta, Georgia, and was an accomplished setter for Walton High School’s volleyball team. A self-described nerd who was into science and space camps between volleyball matches, she could have easily continued her athletic career at the college level but instead chose to pri-
oritize academics and “have a life” at Penn State University. She started as a pre-med major, hoping to one day become an OB/GYN. But chemistry class in her freshman year dashed that goal. “I knew I was good at talking in front of a large group, so I started thinking about business and communications,” McEntee says. “So many people have a fear of public speaking; I don’t. I consider it an opportunity to connect with people and be creative.” Hello, advertising major. She met her future husband at a party in New York. He, like Allison, was buying TV ads at the time. They got married on December 27, 2009, two days after Allison’s most joyous day, and lived in Brooklyn Heights. Allison’s employer then is her employer today: BDG, a leading global media company with a portfolio of distinct digital and experiential brands that shape culture. She has developed successful partnerships with Fortune 500 companies, and she wrote Little Black Book: Asking for Money, a tactical, hands-on “how to” resource targeted to several audiences, from those in business to those in fundraising to those about to ask for a raise. “Treat this little black book,” she writes in the preface, “as your insider’s guide to asking for what you want, and what you deserve.” Patrick and Allison moved to Chicago in 2013. Patrick has moved on from the advertising game and plans to enter the field of education. He’s working on earning a master’s degree at DePaul University and will student-teach social studies at Loyola Academy in Wilmette. He also teaches Sunday School. “He’s self-sufficient, and he jumps right in as a father,” McEntee says. “Amazing … he’s amazing.” The couple’s children are Sally, 10; Ryan, 8; Harold, 4; and Conor, 1. “My kids, my family, my purpose,” she says. Her favorite recipe in that Kenilworth Cooks! Cookbook is “The Best Sloppy Joe Recipe” by Joan Jackson Woods. “Tastes delicious, and every one in my family loves it,” she says. “You can’t go wrong with a recipe like that.” Allison’s mother, Dianne, lives in Wilmette. Texas is smaller than Dianne’s heart. “She loves people, all people,” McEntee says of the former AT&T employee (new devices division). “She’s a giver, super supportive, always positive. Mom always says, ‘Enjoy the moment.’ “I love making memories, love soaking up every one of them.” She’s making plenty of them—at home and at the homes of KCC members.
