To know Katie Ford is to love her. This married mother of four is recognized for her easy smile, her quick laugh, her talent with flowers, her rock’n dance moves, and her endless positivity. So, it may have come as a surprise to some when one night after her children went to bed, Ford turned to Facebook and bravely told the story of her battle with obsessive-compulsive disorder with intrusive thoughts. “I just knew it was the right time,” Ford says, who had been working through her issues with the help of a doctor and the support of her family for about three years. “We’d just had another [suicide] death in our community and I thought that if my story could help just one person, I needed to tell it. “I was terrified, at first, about going public, but I did it because I knew social media would reach a lot of people,” Ford says. “My goal was to help others realize they had no reason to feel ashamed about what they’re enduring or about what they’re thinking. Keeping open dialogue going about mental health issues is the only way

to break the barriers and the stigmas that go along with it.” Ford says a real turning point in her life was when she realized she wasn’t the only one facing a mental health issue. “Early on, I opened up to a friend that I was struggling, and she suggested I attend a public meeting addressing mental health,” Ford says. “There, I met a man who had exactly what I had. He had made it, survived it, and he was willing to talk about it with me. That was such a relief. Now, that’s what I’m hoping to do for others.” Ford says the biggest wonderment of all has been the sheer number of people who have reached out to her confidentially since she first revealed her fight. “It might be several a week or one a month, but the messages come regularly,” she says. “The pandemic has definitely increased the number, especially from parents with college-age children—kids you would never think would struggle and they are.” Ford does her best to connect every person who reaches out to her with a source for help. “In sharing my story, I now have so many people and organizations in my tool kit that I can offer,” she says. “It’s just a mission for me— Continued on PG 10

to help anyone who wants help. It’s second only to my family and above my flowers. I’m so passionate about this and I know it helps keep me healthy, too.” Ford’s love of flowers was one of the therapies she used in dealing with her OCD. “My doctor told me that my ‘bucket’ had burst, that I needed to slow down, step away from the things that were stretching me too thin, and spend more time doing what I love,” she says. “Flowers have always brought me so much joy and I started to play with them more and more. Tom [her husband] would poke fun at me because if you had a bad day, I brought you flowers. If it was your birthday, I brought you flowers. If you stubbed your toe, I brought you flowers.” One morning, Ford’s husband came into the kitchen and saw a number of stunning arrangements on their island and asked who made them. When he found out it was his wife, he nudged her to turn her talent into a business—so she did—launching Flowers by Katie Ford. “I’ve always been so inspired by the beauty of flowers and the joy they bring to others,” Ford says. “It truly fills my heart to create a beautiful arrangement.” While arrangements are at the core of her business, she loves collaborating with event and wedding planners.

“I tell people that it was fate and faith that lead me to the flowers,” she says. “If I hadn’t gone through what I did, I may never have found myself where I am today—bringing people joy in whatever way I can.” One of Ford’s favorite things of late has been matching a mental health organization with a floral workshop she’s leading. “It’s been incredible to intertwine these two things that mean so much to me. I usually open my workshops by telling how there had been this dark time in my life and how I was saved by seeking help and working with flowers,” Ford explains. “My ambassador role with lululemon has been huge in drawing more attention to the importance of mental wellness. I’m always thinking about what I can do next to help more people.” Never in a million years did Ford predict the doors that would open from that one Facebook posts many years ago. “I’m incredibly grateful to the communities of Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, and beyond,” she says. “I was so nervous when I went public with my story, but they embraced me and supported me in every possible way. Whether it’s been a kind word, a quick comment, an email, a handwritten note, or a simple hug—my heart is so full of gratitude for this wonderful community.” Katie Ford at home in Lake Forest. ELEVATING YOUNG WOMEN HIGHLAND PARK’S JULIA KERPEL SHARES HER PASSION FOR STEM AND ENCOURAGES YOUNG WOMEN TO EXPLORE THE INDUSTRY.

Julia Kerpel, a sophomore at Highland Park High School, embodies her personal motto of making time for what matters most. In addition to being on the math team, a ballerina, and having a black belt in karate, Kerpel also sets aside time to pursue her

tor in the Chicagoland area, Kerpel chose her Greenlight for Girls project to include her two passions, incorporating a STEM-inspired craft for children at the end of a Zumba class that she teaches from her home. In March 2020, Kerpel began teaching these weekly Zumba classes to keep children active and to provide a break for par-

main passion: encouraging young women to explore the STEM field. In October, Kerpel became an ambassador for Greenlight for Girls, an international nonprofit organization based out of Belgium that instills confidence in young women and aspires to share a love of science. Having recently been appointed as the ambassador coordinator, Kerpel serves as the line of communi-cation between ambassadors and the rest of the Greenlight for Girls team. “It is really incredible to connect with girls my age who have the same interests as I do with STEM and to encourage young women to pursue STEM careers,” Kerpel says. Greenlight for Girls ambassadors, ages 15 to 25, hail from all over the globe, and are given the platform to pursue a project of their choosing that connects to STEM. “One ambassador creates podcasts with STEM role models, while another makes inspira-tional posters to hang in her school,” Kerpel notes. “As ambassador coordinator, I want to be helpful and act as a resource for all the ambassadors,” Kerpel explains. “I want them to be comfortable coming to me with their ideas and to help them pursue those ideas in their own communities.” As the youngest licensed Zumba instruc-

ents during quarantine. Drawing from ideas on Pinterest, Kerpel formulates crafts for children utilizing accessible household items like paper rolls. Her classes, offered via Zoom and a Twitch live stream, have been recognized for both their health and academic benefits. A lo-cal first-grade teacher has integrated portions of Kerpel’s Zumba class into her students’ schedules, serving as part of a movement break from the static nature of online school. Yet Kerpel’s desire to share her passion for STEM includes more than utilizing crafts as a vehicle. She has posted interviews with women in the STEM field on her personal website. “I’m so happy that I found Greenlight for Girls and that I can help encourage young women all over the world to pursue STEM

TENDER PULLED PORK SANDWICH Pork butt. It’s THE thing of Southern pit barbecue legend, encouraging all sorts of ribald restaurant slogans, from “Can’t touch our butts!” to lots more I’ll leave to your imagination. But the “butt” of these jokes has nothing to do with the backside of a pig: The cut is the pork shoulder, which, shaped like a rifle butt, is the thicker end of the cut of meat that runs from just below the neck on down. And without a pit to barbecue in, the good news is, pork shoulder is very simple to oven roast for very tender, tasty results. We’ve piled the shredded meat on a toasted bun with a classic coleslaw and onion-ring crown. So easy, so good.

RECIPE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS

INGREDIENTS • 2, nice fat 4-lb pork shoulder roasts • 1 Tbsp each, kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper • 2 Tbsp smoked paprika • 1 Tbsp ancho chili powder • 2 Tsp ground cinnamon • 1 large onion, peeled

• 1 Tbsp vegetable oil • 1, 11.2-oz bottle lager (I used Harp) • ½ cup dark brown sugar • 1 can (6 oz.) tomato paste • ¼ cup dark soy sauce • ½ 7.5-oz can chipotle peppers in adobo sauce

METHOD Preheat oven to 400. Mix salt, pepper, paprika, ancho chili powder, and cinnamon together; Rub shoulders all over with spice blend. Cut meat into a few pieces allowing them to fit into a 6-quart enameled cast iron Dutch oven, fat sides up. Slice onion into rings and scatter over the pork. Drizzle with oil. Place uncovered in 400-degree oven for 10 minutes. Remove meat from oven and set aside. Reduce oven heat to 325 degrees. In a bowl, mix the sugar, tomato paste, soy sauce, and ½ can of chipotle peppers in adobo sauce (breaking up the

peppers). Stir in the beer. Pour over the pork in the Dutch oven. Cover Dutch oven and roast in oven for 5 to 6 hours at 325 degrees. Note: The finished meat should be falling-off-the-bone tender. You can check at the five-hour mark, but be sure to wait until it’s super tender before removing from oven. Cut off and discard any large pieces of fat; using two forks, shred and chop the remaining meat into small pieces. Pour off fat from the sauce in the bottom of the pot. Mix shredded meat with the sauce. Serve on toasted buns with your favorite coleslaw and onion rings. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Members of the Lake Forest High School (LFHS) Dance Team don’t have to visualize such a daunting scenario. They experienced the near equivalent of it as dance performers in the 2020-2021 season and passed with flying colors—LFHS royal blue and gold, to be exact. “What our girls did, the way they competed after only a short period of time together in person, was incredible,” LFHS varsity dance coach Alexis Linton says. “They geared up to work together initially in November

and then had to accept the quick flip to virtual. The adjustments they made months later, as they added moves and other details to the routine, and the commitment each made each day … amazing. “Miracle work,” she adds. Linton’s Scouts started their cram session in late January, when pandemic-related restrictions were eased, and the squad was allowed to hone its jazz routine in person only eight days before the Class 2A Deerfield Sectional in February. “We had learned the choreography virtually, but doing it by Zoom was super difficult,” says senior Tess Ivinjack, a tri-captain with classmates Caroline Walsh and Erin Earls. “When we finally got cleared to meet in person, it was go, go, go, go. Then we changed the choreography. “A lot of stuff was thrown at us.” But they weathered the figurative projectiles, made every minute count at each practice, and captured the championship at the

15-team sectional with an 88.3-point effort. Vernon Hills High School (86.23) and Deerfield High School (83.83) finished second and third, respectively. Lake Forest High School’s entrant performed to Lady Gaga’s “Always Remember Us This Way,” a song from the 2018 A Star is Born soundtrack album. “We all talked about the meaning behind the song and how the lyrics could apply to what we went through for almost all of 2020,” Ivinjack says. “We’re not going to remember the times we weren’t able to compete because of the pandemic; we’ll remember the good times we spent together.” A sampling of the lyrics: But all I really know/You’re where I wanna go/The part of me that’s you will never die. Choreographers Faymie Link and Megan O’Malley Jones chose the music. The selection thrilled Linton and her assistant coach, Angela McNicholas. “The girls related to the song and the choreography,” says Linton, the Scouts’ fourth-

year coach. “It’s a soulful, emotional song. It fits them. It represents their stories, their challenges—all the things they’ve endured since the start of the pandemic.” “That song,” adds tri-captain Earls, “was perfect for our routine. It’s about ups and downs. One of our strengths during the season was how well we interacted to get through the tough times. Relying on each other helped us, too.” The team had gathered in a room at senior Mary Considine’s house when the final results of the virtual Deerfield Sectional were posted. The numbers appeared, without warning, as the dancers viewed videos of performances from other sectional competitors. One LFHS dancer noticed the results and informed her teammates. The super news spread quickly in the room. Joyful outbursts reportedly unhinged the roof of the Considine abode. Followup shouts from the champions reportedly returned the roof to its stable position. Then they all hit the beach to celebrate some more on an unusually warm winter day. “Our focus, for as long (three years) as I was a member of the dance team, was to always project energy to make an audience feel our emotion,” says tri-captain Walsh, who— like Ivinjack, Earls, and Considine—helped LFHS capture runner-up honors (Medium POM division) and take ninth place (Medium JAZZ division) last winter at the Universal Dance Association’s National Dance Team Championships in Orlando, Florida. “Winning a sectional championship was

huge for us, a turning point,” Ivinjack reflects. “Our collective reaction was, ‘Whoa, to do that, when other teams had been able to prepare longer than we had, meant our team of sisters had found that special connection you need through hard work and the support of our coaches.’ “I’m proud of how we came together after a super-quick turnaround.” The 2020-2021 crew’s sectional title automatically qualified it to submit a video for the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) state competition on March 6. LFHS finished sixth in a 30-team field, with an 87.92 score; Geneva High School’s dance troupe tallied 94.32 points to win the Class 2A state title. “The biggest obstacle our team overcame was the unknown,” says Linton, who praised the team’s parents and LFHS Dance Team alumnae for their waves of positivity during a trying season. “We had to wonder, for months, ‘Will we ever get to compete?’ A typical dance season is usually a long one, but that’s necessary because it takes time to fully develop any kind of dance routine. Our girls had little time this year, but they still did what it took to make their routine a special one. “Their resiliency impressed me. They stayed optimistic, and you could see and feel their energy whenever they practiced or performed.” Other members of the dance team: juniors Lauren Milanek, Ava Douglass, Emma Drowne, Abi Guenter, Julia Grum, and Summer Webb; sophomores Elsa Dahlgren, Mia D’Alessandro, Bentley Frost, Lily Pedian, and Brynn Waligora. ODE TO JOY LAKE FOREST COUNTRY DAY HEAD OF SCHOOL JOY HURD IS RELISHING THE COLLECTIVE VISION OF THE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

Joy Hurd didn’t just teach when he taught Greek and Latin at St. Peter’s High School in New York City—and then Latin, English, and ancient history at St. Bernard’s School in Manhattan, New York. The current head of school at Lake Forest Country Day School (LFCDS) also kept the number of his students’ neck strains at zero. “The last thing I wanted, as a teacher, was a student of mine looking up, way up, to me as if I were on some kind of pedestal,” says the 36-year-old Hurd, LFCDS’s head of school since July 2018. Hurd’s approach to teaching mirrored that of one of his major influences, the late Greg “Doc” Knittel, who was Hurd’s Latin II and Ancient Greece teacher at Saint Ignatius High School in Cleveland. “He never took himself seriously, and even though he was an erudite man, he wore his erudition lightly,” says Hurd, who grew up in Fairview Park, Ohio. “I always admired that about him. He made the world of classics, with its esoteric language, fun and worthy of study. ‘Doc’ made me see Latin as a gateway to more learning.” The word “pandemic” comes from the Greek “pan” (meaning “all”) and “demos” (meaning people or population). The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020—about a month after Joy and his wife, Emily, became firsttime parents with the birth of daughter Eleanor—forced Hurd to devour literature that Knittel had never assigned. “I had to become an avid consumer of pandemic-related articles and guidelines to addressing it as an educator when the world turned upside down,” Hurd recalls. “Nothing had prepared me for such a task. But I’m a task-driven person, and I welcomed the challenge. “All along, during last spring’s commitment to remote learning and as we prepared to reopen the school for in-person learning last summer, our mission was front and center.” The school’s mission statement: “Inspired teaching, academic rigor, attention to individual needs, a commitment to re-

sponsible citizenship—these principles infuse every aspect of life at Lake Forest Country Day School and define our dedication to producing students of strong character with a passion for learning.” Approximately 400 students (co-educational, independent pre-kindergarten through eighth grade), from more than 35 communities throughout the North Shore and beyond, attend LFCDS, which opened its doors for the first time in 1888. Only 25 students, at the time of this interview in mid-April, had opted to continue learning remotely. “We’re hoping, by the start of the 2021-2022 school year, the pandemic will have lightened to a point where we’ll be able to return safely to our pre-pandemic model,” Hurd says. “Throughout the pandemic we learned—everybody, not just those at our school—that we’re more resilient that we’d imagined. We’re proud of the success we had in 20202021; we forged ahead. Classics at Harvard College and his master’s degree in private school leadership from Teachers College at Columbia University. Following teaching stints at St. Peter’s and St. Bernard’s, he served at Riverdale Country School in New York as a Latin teacher and as assistant director of Middle and Upper School Admissions. Hurd was the director of Upper School (grades 7-9) at The Buckley School in New York City from 2014-2018. “I’ve grown in a lot of ways as a leader at Lake Forest Country Day School, one being the best way to handle a challenge—calmly,” Hurd says. “It’s much easier to solve problems when you’re calm. Worrying won’t get you anywhere. I’ve enjoyed the growth; it’s been a good professional evolution.” An easy, seemingly safe question to ask a leader, in any field, is, “What’s your vision?” Hurd has had to field that query countless times in his professional career. “People always want to know that,” he says. “Yes, one’s vision is certainly important, but it’s not if that person is surrounded by committed, passionate colleagues. My answer to that question, every time, is, ‘The vision needs to be a shared one.’” A football field, give or take the distance of a first down, separates Hurd’s Lake Forest house and his head-of-school chair on campus. The man likes to walk to work, but running is his favorite type of exercise; shortly after moving from Manhattan to Lake Forest three years ago, he doubled—to two—the number of his career marathons after surviving Chicago’s 26.2-mile course. “I totally disconnect when I run in my free time,” Hurd says. “No music. No podcasts. I come up with a lot of ideas. I problem-solve. Running gives me my most valuable thinking time. After a run I usually rush to a pad of paper at home and write down the ideas.” Next to that pad? A book, probably. Hurd consumes more books than competitive eater Joey Chestnut inhales hot dogs. He’s reading Annals of the Former World, by John McPhee. The book—the 1999 Pulitzer Prize winner for General Nonfiction—presents a geological history of North America. Lake Forest Country Day School’s landscape, meanwhile, continues to provide fertile ground for eager students under the attentive guidance of Hurd, the faculty, and the staff. “All of us want our students to learn and become the best versions of themselves,” Hurd says. “The students entrust us to their care, and we receive tremendous support from our engaged parents and alumni.” Lake Forest Country Day School, 847-2342350, is located at 145 South Green Bay Road, Lake Forest.
