you won’t want to miss—gorgeous sushi from Chien’s son Peter Ma. Brought to table on broad white plates, Ma’s specialty sushi creations are eye popping. And the sophisticated flavor compositions are a testament to the 20 years Ma has spent honing his craft. The menu’s simple description of his sushi doesn’t prepare you for the creativity that

comes to table. His Spicy Tuna App, for example, is a tower of delicately spiraled fresh avocado atop a composed stack of diced tuna mixed with chopped macadamia nut and chives centered in pool of dancing orange and green sauce dots that morph into yin-yang spirals with a jiggle of the plate. From there, it’s hands-on fun. You’re meant to scoop and eat the mix with crispy won ton crackers that come on the side, making for a nice mix of spice, cool, and crunch. For my favorite—the Salmon Black Pepper Yuzu sushi plate, slices of fresh salmon are composed in a floral pattern over a pool of black peppered yuzu sauce, with pickled beet, yuzu tobiko (flying fish roe), and frizzled daikon accents. I also tried the whimsical Lollipop Roll, pretty rounds of cucumber-sheet-bundled tuna, salmon, yellowtail, avocado, and daikon speared like lollipops and served with spicy habanero ponzu sauce. Teeny tuna poke tacos with cabbage slaw are also very good, and there is a full range of classic and specialty sushi rolls to choose from as well. Ma’s sushi career started 20 years ago when he worked with Sai Cafe, Sushi Naniwa, and Bob San's, all owned by Chien Lan’s two younger brothers, Bobby and James. After seven years training with his uncles at those establishments, Ma became Executive Sushi Chef for Rick Tramonto’s RT Lounge in Wheeling at the Westin Hotel.

“Then, in 2010 my family and I opened up Sushi Amour across from Little Lan's,” says Ma. “But unfortunately, the recession of 2010 closed that restaurant down.” This was devastating for Ma, who ended up leaving Chicago and moving to Colorado. There, Ma helped open restaurants in Boulder and Denver, and landed jobs in Beaver Creek and Vail at several fine dining sushi bars. When Chien proposed the idea of bringing

Chien, her two brothers and sister Dee, immigrated here from China all with cooking experience. Between them, the siblings opened more than a half dozen restaurants throughout the city and suburbs. Most are still operating today in their original locations. Little Lan’s originally opened in Wilmette and moved to its current location in 1992. Over the years, the menu has featured the same recipes Chien brought with her from

from Little Lan’s. The pot stickers, filled with minced pork and pan fried, are nicely plump, if a little thick in the wrapper department. The Kung-Pao Chicken (you can also have it with beef, pork, or shrimp) came with the promised bok choy, crinkle cut carrot, mushroom, zucchini, water chestnuts, and peapods, and though billed as a spicy dish, was easily approachable. We were pleased that the veggies were crisp

tender and not overcooked. Rounding out our meal, we tried the Sweet & Sour Chicken, batter dipped and deep-fried chicken breast chunks with pineapple, carrot, green and red peppers in a sweet-sour sauce that added flavor without being cloying. We added some extra greenage with a bowlful of crinkly-good Szechuan Garlic Green Beans. With another three dozen options to choose from on the menu, there is room for lots more exploration. Ma’s sushi show back to the family business, Peter agreed, and the results are waiting for you. “After nearly 30 thirty years in Winnetka, we really wanted to brighten up our offerings, and there’s no time like the present,” says Ma. Chien’s extended family has been in the restaurant business in Chicago since the ‘70s.

HISTORY ON WHEELS THE 8TH LAKE BLUFF HISTORY MUSEUM AUTO SHOW BRINGS VINTAGE BEAUTIES TO THE HEART OF THE VILLAGE. BY ADRIENNE FAWCETT THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

What’s the most iconic automobile of all time? You’d have a hard time getting car enthusiasts to agree on that, but there is one thing collectors and restorers of vintage autos do have in common: they like to talk about their four-wheel treasures. That’s what makes the Lake Bluff History Museum Auto Show so special. Scores of beautifully restored and maintained classic cars from the early 1900s through the 1980s will be on display in downtown Lake Bluff on Saturday, June 26, from 3 to 6 p.m. Visitors can see the cars up close and talk with their owners about every detail large and small. Vehicles typically featured include the Museum’s restored 1931 Lake Bluff Ice Truck plus Corvettes, Mustangs, Cobras and Birds, Packards, Woodies, Jaguars, Rolls . . . GTOs, Chevys, Buicks ... a monster truck or two, hot rods, Lincolns, the occasional Ferrari . . . and more! “When you walk down Scranton Avenue you’ll be transported back in time,” promises Ray Kracik, co-founder of the Lake Bluff History Museum Auto Show. “You’ll see beautiful, old cars that bring memories to the surface of your father’s or grandfather’s car, or your own first family car.” You’ll also see original stock cars that look just as they did when they came off the assembly line, as well as resto-mods that are the shells of original cars with the power train of modern vehicles. A ’55 Chevy Nomad restomod won Best in Show at Lake Bluff ’s 2019 Auto Show. The Nomad was in decent shape when John Gutt purchased it on Ebay several years ago. “It was a fun drive,” he remembers, but it had some issues. “Things leaked and made noise, and once in a while it would just stop running.” He decided to undertake a restomod, restoring the car while also making improvements such as better brakes, a more reliable engine, and better-fitting body panels. The Nomad’s color was beautifully restored in Regal Turquoise/ India Ivory.

“We ended up with a late-model car with the classic looks of an older car,” Gutt says. The Lake Bluff History Museum Auto Show made its debut in 2013 when Kracik, John Tiffany, Steve Willard, Denny Hermann, and other car enthusiasts helped the Museum restore the 1931 Lake Bluff Ice Truck to its original glory. While planning an event to unveil the Ice Truck, the team decided to include vehicles from their own collections as well. That small gathering grew in 2019 to include more than 100 vintage and antique classic cars from collectors in Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, Highland Park, Winnetka, Glenview, and beyond. The show was cancelled in 2020 as everyone was sheltering in place during the COVID-19 pandemic, which makes the 2021 event even more exciting. “We all have so much pent-up energy to exhibit our classic cars,” says Kracik. “We’re expecting a great turnout!” Lake Bluff History Museum Auto Show supporters include lead sponsor The Silo Restaurant, plus Kinnucan, The Last Detail, Hill & Stone, Knauz Auto Group, and many volunteers including those from Lake County Veterans & Family Services. The fun includes: • Best in Show 2021 award • The ever-popular Lake Bluff Ice Truck • Food and beverages available for purchase from area merchants • Local businesses open for guests to explore before, during and after the show The 8th Lake Bluff History Museum Auto Show will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 26, on Scranton and Center Avenues near Lake Bluff ’s beautiful Village Green. Parking is free at the Lake Bluff train station parking lot. Scores of vintage classic cars will fill downtown Lake Bluff on June 26 for the Lake Bluff History Museum Auto Show. VIRTUAL VALUE MUSIC INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO RAISED MORE THAN $825,000 AT ITS VIRTUAL GALA LAST MONTH TO BENEFIT ITS MUSIC EDUCATION PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT THE CHICAGO AREA. BY MITCH HURST THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

The Music Institute of Chicago celebrated 90 years of innovation, access, and excellence in music education as it welcomed more than 450 viewers to its 90th Anniversary Virtual Gala on May 10. Contributions totaled more than $825,000 from about 250 donors before and during the event, which was free to view. About $51,000 was raised as the event streamed. The Institute leads people toward a lifelong engagement with music through teaching, performances, and service initiatives that educate, inspire, and build strong, healthy communities. Since its founding in 1931, its commitment to innovation, access, and excellence has served as an important community resource and helps to ensure music is available to everyone. Each year, the Music Institute provides personalized music instruction to more than 1,500 students, regardless of age, level of experience, or financial means. It operates eight Community Music School locations in the region, including Chicago, Downers Grove, Evanston, Lake Forest, Lincolnshire, and Winnetka, as well as offering teaching online. Mark George, the Music Institute’s Presi-

dent and CEO and a resident of Wilmette said the event raised slightly more than in years past despite the challenges of hosting this year’s Gala virtually. “We have a very positive mission leading people toward a life-long engagement with music, teaching, performing, and service and people really respond to that,” George says. “I think right now especially because people are looking to engage, they're looking to be positive.” George says the combined efforts of professional staff and volunteers, as well as a distinguished group of honorees, also contributed to the Gala’s success. “We have a fantastic team, a great staff, talented faculty, students and their families, and then tons of volunteers from the Board of Trustees to the Co-Chairs and Vice Chairs who worked really hard to make the event a success,” he says. “We had a worldclass artist that we honored, Zubin Mehta, and then a really beloved couple who are philanthropists on the North Shore and in Chicago, Bill and Linda Gantz.” Highlights of the evening included remarks from Maestro Zubin Mehta, who received the Dushkin Award presented by his brother, Zarin Mehta, a 1998 Dushkin Award recipient. Linda Theis Gantz and Wilbur “Bill” Gantz, received the Cultural Visionary Award for Chicago from Hon-

orary Gala Chairs Alexandra C. and John D. Nichols. Music Institute faculty Nina Wallenberg and Daniel Wallenberg received the Richard D. Colburn Award for Teaching Excellence. The evening featured prerecorded performances by accomplished alumni of the Music Institute, including violinist Maya Anjali Buchanan, pianist Inna Faliks, violinist Rachel Barton Pine, and the Kairos String Quartet. Anniversary messages from past Dushkin awardees were also presented, including jazz icon Wynton Marsalis, soprano Renée Fleming, and violinists Joshua Bell and Midori. The Dushkin Award, established more than 30 years ago and named for the Music Institute’s founders Dorothy and David Dushkin, recognizes international luminaries in the world of music for their contributions to the art form, as well as to the education of youth. Maestro Zubin Mehta was music director of the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra for 50 years, becoming conductor emeritus in 2019. He cultivates young musical talent worldwide as co-chairman of the Mehli Mehta Music Foundation in Bombay, with his brother Zarin, and the BuchmannMehta School of Music in Tel Aviv. Considering the cancellation of the 2020 Anniversary Gala due to the pandemic, the Music Institute also offered special recogni-

tion to the 2020 award recipients: Dushkin Award honoree and pianist Evgeny Kissin, Cultural Visionary Award for Chicago honoree Helen Zell, and Richard D. Colburn Award for Teaching Excellence honorees Arlene Stokman and Abraham Stokman, all of whom spoke during the event. Funds raised from the Gala provide the single-largest source of support for needbased financial aid and merit scholarships, as well as crucial underwriting for music education programs, performances, and service initiatives that benefit thousands of individuals throughout the Chicago region each year. PEOPLE FIRST SLACK’S CHIEF PEOPLE OFFICER NADIA RAWLINSON SHARES INSIGHT INTO HER IMPRESSIVE JOURNEY THROUGH LIFE AND BUSINESS. BY ALLISON DUNCAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Nadia Rawlinson used to be a road warrior. The tech executive regularly commuted between the Chicago area and her office on the West Coast, where she was Chief Human Resources Officer for the Fortune 500 global events promoter and venue operator Live Nation Entertainment. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Rawlinson, aptly sensing the paradigm shift occurring in the workplace—and in broader society—left Live Nation. She joined the team at business communication platform Slack Technologies, headquartered in San Francisco, as Chief People Officer. She now oversees everything from global recruiting and people operations to organizational effectiveness and program management. Demand for workplace communication tools like Slack soared last year (after Q2 revenue grew 39 percent, Salesforce announced the acquisition of the company for $27.7 billion in December) as teams across the globe adapted to working from home. Thus, Slack immediately added management of the company’s ongoing response to the impacts of the pandemic on both its employees and office spaces to Rawlinson’s purview. She is uniquely positioned to tackle the challenge, having nearly 20 years of experience across all facets of human resources strategy and development on a global scale. Armed with a BA from Stanford University and an MBA from Harvard Business School, Rawlinson spent her early career at tech behemoth Groupon, financial services company American Express, and Silicon Valley giants Google and Rakuten. Ever heard of them? “I felt good about the opportunities I have had thus far but then started to think about what’s next,” says Rawlinson. “It had been an extraordinary time to be at Live Nation during the upswing of the intersection between music and culture, but with the industry facing the headwinds of COVID-19, it felt like the right time to figure out where I could be put to my best and highest use and where I could make the biggest impact.” When I speak to Rawlinson, she’s at home on the North Shore in the midst of what Slack has dubbed a ‘Friyay,’ a company-wide, once-per-month Friday off to help mitigate burnout and to offer employees an opportunity to recharge. Another newly instituted policy at Slack is emergency time off, where employees can step away from the office for things like homeschooling or a coveted vaccine appointment without having to use precious vacation days. Both are policies Rawlinson says will live on beyond the pandemic. “The world has

fundamentally changed,” she explains. “It’s not reverting back to the way things used to be. There will be a next normal, and a prominent feature of that will be flexible work. And I don’t mean flexible in that people can be at home but more so that people can work when is best and most productive for them. How often can you be part of a company on the cusp of what’s happening in the world? This isn’t just about a job but about leaving an imprint on the industry at large.” The team at Slack understands the future of work more than most. They even launched their own think tank, Future Forum, a consortium that will help companies make the transformations necessary to thrive in a new economy. “We believe in being our own test case and

live and breathe this work every day,” says Rawlinson. “It’s not just research—we put it into practice. Intentional investments you make in culture, leadership, and identifying who you are as an organization and what you stand for pays off in times of uncertainty.” Future Forum recently released data from its first Remote Employee Experience Index showing that individuals experience remote work very differently depending on their unique circumstances. The results found that 97 percent of Black knowledge workers currently working remotely prefer the future of work to be remote or hybrid as it increases a sense of belonging and makes it easier for Black employees to manage stress—leading to higher job satisfaction and engagement. Companies that move to a hybrid work

model are best positioned to level the corporate playing field and attract and retain the best talent in the post-pandemic world. “I’m a Black executive at a time when not many of us are in C-Suite roles,” says Rawlinson. “I feel the weight of responsibility, and I welcome it. Mellody Hobson, co-CEO of Ariel Investments, has said—and I’m paraphrasing—there have been many ancestors before us who had to endure much worse just for me to be where I am today. If the burden of that is simply that I must be excellent at what I do, then I welcome that any day. It’s a small price to pay to honor the work that came before me.” The moments Rawlinson says feel the most significant in her career are the ones in which she leveraged her positions of influence to effectuate change. Take, for example, when Rawlinson joined the board of directors at J.Crew Group this January (she’s been on the board of directors at Vail Resorts since December 2019 as well). From a gender, race, and age perspective, the 40-something Rawlinson is an anomaly. “I feel proud of that,” she says. “It’s important to me. There’s been more inclusion on boards both in pace and number of diverse directors in the last year than the previous few years combined. And J.Crew holds a special place in my heart—it’s led by a woman and has a strong female design point of view. It’s a truly iconic American brand. I still remember when Michelle Obama wore J.Crew accessories to the presidential inauguration.” Passionate about supporting female CEOs and founders—J.Crew Group named industry veteran Libby Wadle chief executive officer last fall—Rawlinson considers herself a J.Crew evangelist. “Over the last year, I had to recalibrate where I’ve been spending my time not only professionally but also personally and philanthropically,” says Rawlinson. “The chance to stop, rethink, and be intentional about our choices in life is something I hope we all benefit from.” For Rawlinson, yes, that means driving the “next normal” culture at Slack but also capitalizing on time at home with her husband and their two dogs. She has gotten into a COVID-inspired habit of mind-clearing bike rides to LF Juice for a protein smoothie before morning Zoom calls and is planning for an annual August reunion with family and friends in Isle of Palms, South Carolina. “I’m excited for a return to social and personal connection,” says Rawlinson. “But I don’t think that means everything goes back to the way it was. More than ever before, we are all now in a position to better understand what truly matters and what’s actually important. My wish is that this stays true for all of us even beyond the pandemic.” THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

SEISMIC SHIFT FORMER CHICAGO POLICE DEPARTMENT DEPUTY CHIEF CHRISTOPHER KENNEDY IS ADJUSTING WELL AS NEW NORTHBROOK CHIEF OF POLICE. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

Imagine someone refereeing the Super Bowl one day and then jumping at the chance to head a crew of officials in a youth flag football game shortly thereafter. Christopher Kennedy essentially did the equivalent earlier this year—in the field of law enforcement. Kennedy, 50, was serving as deputy chief/ executive officer overseeing Counter-Terrorism and Special Operations for the Chicago Police Department (CPD) when he was named Northbrook’s chief of police from a field of 70 candidates on March 1. The big city’s population: nearly 2,700,000. Northbrook’s population: nearly 33, 500. Night and day. Water tower and cup of water. But don’t think for a second that Kennedy—a 29-year CPD veteran and son of former Chicago policeman Jack Kennedy, a tactical team member at the turbulent 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago—is taking his new post any less seriously than he did his last CPD position. “I am honored to have been chosen to lead one of the most revered departments in the state,” says Kennedy, who succeeded Roger Adkins and started working in the village formerly known as Shermerville in early April. “Known for its high level of service, professionalism, and community trust, the Northbrook Police Department is poised to address current law enforcement challenges and is the perfect place for me to begin the next chapter of my law enforcement career. “I am excited for the opportunity to mentor officers and strengthen community relationships.” History thrilled Kennedy at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, so he majored in it. Were he to appear on Jeopardy! and tackle a category that required knowledge of Sir Robert Peel, he’d race through it at breakneck speed. Peel served twice as the prime minister of the United Kingdom (1834-1835 and 1841-1846). Peel is also known as the father of modern British policing. One of the nine policing principles he espoused was, “To recognize always that the power of the police to fulfill their functions and duties is dependent on public approval of their existence, actions and behavior, and on their ability to secure and maintain public trust.” “Many of Peel’s principles still apply today,” says Kennedy, who lives on Chicago’s Northwest Side and has two children, Aidan, 14, and Maeve, 12. “They’re still functional. Take a look at what Peel believed in the 1800s; his beliefs formed a strong foundation for polic-

ing, with an emphasis on maintaining positive police-community relationships. “A community’s residents,” he continues, “empower those in law enforcement and expect honesty and integrity.” Kennedy attended Taft High School in Chicago and competed for the Eagles’ track and field team for a couple of seasons, first as a sprinter and then as a distance specialist. He dubbed himself “a common kid” who got along with everyone, and he’s quick to point out that a cowriter ( Jim Jacobs) of the musical Grease is a Taft alumnus. Jack Kennedy, now 78, became a well-known homicide detective and top-notch hostage negotiator with the CPD, but he never talked shop with Christopher at the kitchen table. Or anywhere else. “My father wasn’t a ‘war story’ guy,” Kennedy says. Kennedy earned his master’s in public administration at the Illinois Institute of Technology before deciding to take the police exam in the early 1990s and follow in his father’s beat steps. “I was part of the massive hiring of police officers when federal funding expanded in the wake of the crack epidemic,” says Kennedy, who had promised his grandmother that he would not become a cop. “Fast forward to 9/11, and people recognized how tough the job is and often showed their appreciation for what we do. There’s still considerable respect for police officers. There’s a silent majority out there. “A lot of us would like the people in that majority to be more vocal.” Kennedy spent more than 12 command-level years in leadership and strategic planning with the CPD. In addition to be being a sergeant, he was a commanding officer/ watch commander (Targeted Response Unit), a commanding officer (Marine & Helicopter Unit), and a commander (Gang Investigation Division, Bureau of Organized Crime), among other posts. He received more than 90 awards and commendations for search and

rescue, life-saving, skill, and fitness. Christopher Jack Kennedy is decorated, in spades. “I’d done a lot in Chicago,” says Kennedy, who helped the CPD prepare for the NATO Summit in 2012—the first time

a U.S. city outside of Washington, D.C., was tapped to host the alliance’s international meeting. “Tough times, with a lot of challenges. There’s a touch of a small-town feel in Northbrook. I like it. I’m happy here. The police department is dedicated, caring. No cynicism. It’s a well-run village, and its political structure is supportive and kind.” Kennedy had some terrific bosses in Chicago and some not-so-terrific ones. But he learned from both sets of supervisors and packed the accrued knowledge in his leadership arsenal. It’ll certainly come in handy during his tenure at 1401 Landwehr Road in Northbrook. “Ultimately everybody wants to be led,” Kennedy says. “I’m looking forward to deciding pathways for Northbrook’s police officers. An effective mentor has to be good at reading individuals and understanding where they would best thrive.” Kennedy’s paternal grandfather served as the deputy director of the Illinois State Police. He never got to know him; Christopher was young when that grandpa died. Kennedy’s maternal grandfather worked as a machinist in Chicago, or, as Kennedy puts it, a “hardworking wrench turner.” He got to know him. Quite well. “The kindest soul,” Kennedy recalls. “A little guy, with the biggest, sweetest heart. I hope I picked up some of his traits.” Nothing means more to Chief Kennedy than fatherhood does. Attending any of his kids’ events ranks No. 1 on his What I Love To Do In My Free Time list, ahead of spending time with “my handful of friends,” occasionally talking shop with his father, and lifting weights. Northbrook’s Police Department is in good hands—and in good shape—with Kennedy at the helm. “Policing, in any community, is unique,” Kennedy says. “It’s difficult to judge. It’s hard to quantify success in the field, because police work isn’t anything like making widgets and aiming for monetary gain. “I’m nearly two months in as police chief here, and I’m building my leadership team. We’re going to emphasize community outreach.” THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
