said Biddle, who played tennis and wrestled for teams at Reed High School in Sparks, Nevada. “I had no idea at the time that competitive racing was even a thing.” He eventually pounced—think of a tennis player near the net, transforming a tennis ball into a pile of yellow pulp with an over-

head smash—on the opportunities to race atop water. Biddle “hopped from boat to boat” for battles on Lake Michigan after his days as a political science major at Loyola University in Chicago. “Being close to nature excited me; it still does,” says Biddle, who, six years ago,

moved f rom the Chicago neighborhood Old Town to Lake Forest with his family (wife Elizabeth, a native of La Grange and a Lyons Township High School graduate; sons Robert VI, Owen, and Charlie; and daughter Caroline). “There’s nothing more exhilarating than being at the helm, finding a groove, and experiencing the magic onboard.” A member of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange beginning in 1998, he and one set of crew mates survived an epic storm during a “Mac” race in the 1990s. His best finish to date in the race that ends on Lake Huron off Mackinac Island in Michigan is a fifth-place showing aboard a Nelson Marek 36. Typical length of a shift at the helm: four hours. Biddle, who’s thinking of entering this summer’s “Mac” as a crew member of a boat named Turning Point, needs to complete only three more “Mac” races to land the coveted “Old Goat” (or, in some circles, “Island Goat”) status. Sailors who finish 25 races get to apply for membership in the Island Goat Sailing Society. A total of 390 sailors had achieved the distinction through 2019, according to islandgoats.org. The first “Mac” was staged in 1898. Last year’s “Mac” was not held because of the pandemic. Biddle’s favorite quote this year is one he’s treasured for many years, because he essentially lives by it. “(Country singer) Jimmy Dean said it,” Biddle says. “I love it—you can apply it to many areas in your life. It’s, ‘I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.’ ”

Anne Stewart) of a movie—Canyon Del Muerto—that is in post-production as we read. It’s a film about Ann Axtell Morris (1900-1945), a pioneer in archaeology and co-discoverer of Anazasi, North America’s first civilization. Scenes include excavating cursed mummies in sacred burial grounds, surviving flash floods, repairing monumental ruins while dangling f rom ropes, and pulling Model T automobiles out of quicksand. Get the feeling that Mr. Biddle did more today between 6-7 a.m. than folks will do for the rest of this decade? Thought so. “We’ve all been stuck on these ‘islands’ for the longest time,” Biddle, speaking in late April, says, alluding to the state of isolation many have had to accept and endure since the start of the pandemic. “Now, thankfully, it’s looking more and more like we’ll finally be able to navigate toward normalcy.” Biddle knows navigation. Biddle, as a youngster growing up in Nevada and the West Coast, got hooked on sailing at Camp Deerwood, in Holderness, New Hampshire—the setting for the 1981 movie On Golden Pond. “I remember being on a Sunfish at camp, taking in the serenity, looking all around me, and listening to the water as I sailed,”

GET BACK UNDER THE STARS RAVINIA FESTIVAL RETURNS FOR ITS 85TH SEASON WITH NEW SAFETY PROTOCOLS AND A THREE-MONTH SUMMER SCHEDULE THAT REPRESENTS THE DIVERSE RANGE OF MUSICAL GENRES FOR WHICH IT IS KNOWN. BY SHERRY THOMAS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

When Jeffrey P. Haydon started his new job as President and CEO of The Ravinia Festival last September, he set out on a singular mission—to reopen the 117-year-old institution’s iconic gates in time for summer. While no one knew what pandemic life in 2021 would look like, everyone knew that where there was a will, there had to be a way. “It’s been a difficult year for a lot of people. Throughout the pandemic, we talked about what was ‘essential,’ but music is one of the few things in life that can speak to everybody’s soul, and we believe that’s also an ‘essential’ part of the healing process,” explains Haydon, who was officially appointed to replace retiring President and CEO Welz Kauffman in early July 2020. “Ravinia is the perfect place to be together and be re-inspired again, so we decided that if there was any way to prudently and safely reopen those gates, we were going to do it.” When the 2021 concert schedule was released in early May, a collective chorus of applause echoed throughout the North

Shore community and on social media. The three-month season is somewhat abbreviated, and the experience will be different, but the “return” of Ravinia is a sign that perhaps we are on the other side of the worst health crisis in our history. The summer lineup (so far; stay tuned for additional announcements through the summer) will include 64 performances between July 1 and September 26 and marks the 85th concert season in the history of the oldest outdoor music festival in the country.

14

“More than ever before, we look forward to welcoming audiences back to Ravinia,” says Haydon, crediting the reopening to an ongoing community effort that saw the city, local public health authorities, experts from Northwestern Medicine, Ravinia staff, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, donors, volunteer leaders, and artists working creatively to find a path forward. “That has been one of my greatest joys to see everyone come together for that.” Tickets for 2021 performances will go on sale in two phases, in order to provide

flexibility for updated seating protocols and programming in the second half of the season. Tickets for the general public went on sale on Ravinia’s website, ravinia.org, on June 16 for concerts between July 1 and August 15, and will be on sale July 21 for concerts after August 15. To adhere to currently recommended protocols from the CDC and local authorities, park hours will be shortened prior to show time, concerts will be held without intermission, audience capacity will be reduced, and all public performances will take place outdoors. Also new this year is an exciting perk for Ravinia patrons that harkens back to the festival’s origins—a partnership with Metra that honors all Ravinia tickets as train fare on the Union Pacific North Line. Seating in the Pavilion will be physically distanced and sold in groups of two or four. The South Lawn will provide audiences with pre-reserved, distanced pods for two, four, or six people and will feature a dedicated screen showing the live video feed of the stage. The North Lawn will have a reduced capacity of general admission access with first-come, first-served seating. And while the summer season is slightly shorter this year, the schedule continues to represent the range of musical genres for

| SATURDAY JUNE 26 | SUNDAY JUNE 27 2021

which the festival has earned renown—all while maintaining its commitment to classical music of all kinds, including the annual six-week residency by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In keeping with its signature mix of offerings, the 2021 lineup also features artists ranging from jazz, Broadway, and American Songbook to folk/bluegrass/roots and popular music. Headliners include such artists as Ziggy Marley, King Crimson and The Zappa Band, Blind Boys of Alabama, and the Indigo Girls with Ani DiFranco. The Joffrey Ballet also returns to the festival for the first time in more than a decade. “Ravinia is a place to fall in love with music of all kinds—a place where an artist can come in and do a program that’s really special,” says Haydon, explaining that the schedule will only expand from here as the summer continues. “When you look at what Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga have done at Ravinia, those were special moments. I look forward to building more of those moments and continuing to create a place where artists can do something that’s close to their hearts.” To reserve a seat, review the latest schedule, or get more information, visit ravinia.org. EVOLVING ATTITUDE WINNETKA ARTIST LINDA ANN WEBER SHOWS HER NEWEST ABSTRACT PAINTINGS IN TWO NORTH SHORE EXHIBITIONS. BY CATHY DEMETROPOULOS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Winnetka artist Linda Ann Weber describes her creative process as serendipitous. One example is her abstract work, “Remembering Lake Winnebago,” which was titled only after she completed the painting. What

but sometimes, they do.” For Weber, color and pattern have always simply flowed. As a little girl, sitting down with pile of markers or crayons, she would take a blank sheet of paper and start making patterns until the whole space was filled. “The colors and shapes just came. Nothing was planned, it was just intuitive,” says Weber,

blank canvas was challenging. “Since the paintings come from within, it can make you feel vulnerable, like you are baring your soul,” she explains. “Also, when I was working as a designer, there was always somebody standing over your shoulder saying, ‘Make this red’ or ‘Use this font.’ Now—all of a sudden—it was total freedom, which at first felt terrifying but then became very empowering.”

leading teams as a creative director for Morton Grove-based Publications International. A stint living in North Carolina then led her to explore freer forms of artistic expression. In Charlotte, Weber met the owner of Blue Pony Gallery, which had a press and specialized in exhibiting monotypes, etchings,

Like her childhood drawings, Weber’s work today is still abstract and intuitive. Working with acrylic paint, pencil, crayon, paper collage, and glazing mediums, she builds each composition in layers. Until recently, most pieces ranged in size from about 30 x 30 inches to 30 x 40 inches. The addition of a new, larger studio space at her home in Winnetka means she will be adding larger-sized compositions to her body of work.

came to life on canvas was not intentional, yet poignant all the same. “Looking at it, I was reminded of the way it felt to be at my grandparents’ cottage on Lake Winnebago. The feeling of swimming in the lake, the feeling of happiness and freedom and summer as a child,” she says. “But the inspiration for the painting itself? There wasn’t one—other than what I was feeling and seeing in the moment working with these beautiful blues and aquas and greens. None of my paintings are meant to look like a specific landscape,

who has two exhibitions this summer featuring her contemporary abstract works at The Highland Park Art Center and North Shore Art League. Growing up blocks from the lake in Evanston, Weber was encouraged in artistic expression by her mother who painted and drew, and by a sister, who is also an artist. Weber’s natural knack led her into a career in graphic arts. She spent a few years in packaging design before moving to publication design, shaping magazines and books, and

woodcuts, and other art made with printmaking techniques. “I was really drawn to printmaking and started taking classes there, making monotypes and monoprints where I would put a piece through the press several times, adding different layers of drawing, collage, and ink,” she says. “But I wanted to explore other forms of art and so, I started painting.” By 2013, Weber was painting full time, creating multiple series of smaller abstract work and larger individual works. Initially, Weber says segueing from graphic design to facing a

SWEDISH DAY CARDAMOM BREAD BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Fragrant with the lovely scent of cardamom, this golden, Swedish-pearl-sugar topped braid has been part of the Good Templar Swedish Day festival tradition for decades. But what—or perhaps who, is a Good Templar? With an organizational structure modeled on Freemasonry (but open to both men and women) the Stockholm-headquartered International Organisation of Good Templars (IOGT) was one of many temperance organizations founded in the 19th century, promoting a lifestyle free of alcohol and drugs. And it has some strong North Shore connections. Good Templars who immigrated from Sweden to Chicago set up lodges for their gatherings all over the city. Hoping to preserve Swedish traditions, lodges on the north side came together early in the 1900s to sponsor a large Swedish festival at Linden Park in Evanston. Because the festival was so well received, in September 1911, Chicago Good Templars expanded the party to become the annual “Svenskarnas Dag” (Swedish Day) at Ravinia Park, celebrating Midsommar—the longest day of the year. By 1924, with festival attendance topping 10,000, the group started scouting for their own property. They bought a pretty, 66-acre site near the Fox River in Geneva (now known as Good Templar Park) and kicked off the first Swedish Day there on June 30, 1925, with more than 14,000 celebrants. This year’s summer solstice happened last Sunday, June 20—Good Templar’s 96th Swedish Day at the park. There was traditional music, a Viking reenactment, Maypole dances, and plenty of Swedish food— including this lovely cardamom bread The vintage recipe, from Beatrice Ojakangas, allows you to chill the dough after mixing, eliminating some of the time and effort. It’s very best fresh out of the oven, with a little butter on top. PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS

INGREDIENTS FOR THE BREAD:

• 2 packages active dry yeast • 1 cup tepid water (105 to 115 degrees) • ½ cup (1 stick) butter, melted and room temperature • ½ cup nonfat dry milk powder • 2 tsp. freshly ground cardamom seeds • ¾ cup sugar • 3 large eggs, slightly beaten • 1 tsp. salt • 4 ½ cups unbleached all-purpose flour, divided

METHOD In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in the tepid water. Stir in dry milk powder, sugar, ground cardamom, salt and beaten eggs. Add 2 cups of the flour; mix until smooth. Stir in the melted butter and 2 more cups of flour. Mix until very smooth. Add remaining ½ cup flour and continue stirring as the dough gathers into a ball. Dough will be stiff but sticky. Knead briefly. Gather into a ball and nestle in the bottom of the bowl. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight (at least 8 hours.)

FOR THE GLAZE:

• 1 beaten egg • 1 Tbsp. Swedish pearl sugar, divided

surface, divide dough into two equal halves. Divide each half into three balls. Roll each of these six balls of dough into 20-inch-long ropes. Place three of the ropes lengthwise on the center of one of the parchment-covered baking sheets. Braid into a loaf, tucking ends under at the ends of the braid. Repeat with the remaining three ropes. Cover loaves with non-stick-spray coated plastic wrap; allow to rise in a warm place until puffy for 1 hour. Set oven rack to center position; preheat oven to 350 degrees. Discard plastic wrap and brush loaves with beaten egg. Sprinkle each loaf with half of the pearl sugar. Bake 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

GUT FEELING HEIDI HENDERSON’S INSTINCTS TELL HER THE STIGMA ATTACHED TO DIGESTIVE DISEASES WILL DISSIPATE. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

Space was available on Heidi Henderson’s desk at work one day in 2017. So the J.P. Morgan wealth management associate used it—as a makeshift pillow. “I had to put my head down and rest for a while,” recalls Henderson, now 42 and a Winnetka resident. “I was so fatigued.” Concerned co-workers at the office in Chicago had noted how ashen Henderson looked. J.P. Morgan Executive Director Ben Pogofsky was aware Henderson had been treated for gastroenteritis after her visit to an ER earlier in the month. “I felt like a million bucks for about a week,” Henderson says. “The antibiotics seemed to be working. I was advised by the ER personnel to follow up with a gastroenterologist.” But well before the appointment, Henderson felt like a few cents. Miserable. Pogofsky happened to be a new member of the Gastro-Intestinal Research Foundation (GIRF) board of directors and offered to call Dr. David T. Rubin, who is GIRF’s lead scientific advisor, a renowned gastroenterologist, and a co-director of the University of Chicago Medicine Digestive Diseases Center. “I told Benjy, ‘Yes, yes, please call him,’ ” Henderson recounts. “I was desperate.” Dr. Rubin then called Henderson 30 minutes later and asked her to describe the symptoms she had experienced in the previous six days. Dr. Rubin listened. His next question: “Are you able to come to our clinic now?” Henderson ordered an Uber. Dr. Rubin and his team evaluated her at the clinic—an hour after the phone call—and diagnosed ulcerative colitis. She was 38. Each year 70 million Americans are diagnosed with a digestive disease. Henderson would tell her story—the one you just read—a million times to help shed the stigma attached to digestive diseases. “What I have is a chronic disease, but knowing what I had was helpful,” says Henderson, who joined GIRF’s advisory council in December. “Dr. Rubin created a treatment plan, and I was confident I was put on the right path to recovery. I’m fine now; I’ve been flare free for two years. ‘What’s really important to me now is to do what I can to remove the stigma associated with digestive diseases. We can get there. I’m

26

eager to talk about this with anyone. I want to get the word out to all sufferers: You’re not alone. There’s hope for you. And GIRF and doctors like Dr. Rubin care deeply about helping those with illnesses like mine.” Founded in 1961, GIRF is a nonprofit dedicated to raise funds to support the physicians and scientists at the University of Chicago Digestive Diseases Center (UCDDC) in their efforts to provide outstanding care, train future leaders, and perform innovative, clinical and laboratory research in order to treat, cure, and prevent digestive diseases.

What’s really important to me now is to do what I can to remove the stigma associated with digestive diseases. We can get there. I’m eager to talk about this with anyone. I want to get the word out to all sufferers: You’re not alone.

Heidi Henderson

GIRF held its Diamond Anniversary Ball virtually on May 1, raising more than $1.3 million for research at UCDDC. The GI Research Foundation honored the late Beatrice “Bee” G. Crain, 100, of the Crain-Maling Foundation with the inaugural Joseph B. Kirsner Award for her lifelong commitment to GIRF and presented the first-ever Partners in Science Award to longtime GIRF champions Sy and Nancy Taxman. Born in Kansas, Henderson moved to Illinois with her family when she was 5. They lived in Villa Park and moved to Wheeling when Heidi was in the seventh grade. She attended Wheeling High School and then a high school in Portland, Oregon, before returning to Illinois and

graduating from Buffalo Grove High School in 1996. Henderson began her college years at Harper College in Palatine and ended them at Northwestern University. In between? Semesters at the University of Illinois-Chicago and jobs as a bartender and runner/clerk/trader at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. “There were so few females when I was at the Merc,” Henderson says. “There I was, a 4-foot-11 woman next to 6-foot-4 men who played Division I sports in college. They all were incredibly nice to me and related to me in a sisterly way. “We all felt like dinosaurs in the pit at one point in 2009, because of the transition to electronic trading.” Henderson earned her degree in economics at Northwestern in 2012, and then entered the wealth advising industry. Priceless was her good fortune on that critical day at work four years ago. “Benjy’s father (the late Larry Pogofsky) was active in GIRF and knew Dr. Rubin well,” Henderson says. “I’ll always be thankful for that connection. Benjy put me on the path that led me to the help I needed. Dr. Rubin was amazing from the moment I met him. Comforting, too. “I have to tell you what else he did for me. I had something going on with my vision, preCovid. I ended up getting an MRA (magnetic resonance angiography), which is basically an MRI with more detail. They found a bulge in a blood vessel in my brain. I called Dr. Rubin, because I consider him a friend, and he referred me to a neurosurgeon.” Nobody has influenced Henderson’s life more than her mother, Taiwan native and Franklin Park resident Harumi, has. Harumi worked hard and tirelessly as a waitress while raising Heidi and sons Sean and Hugh on her own. “An amazing mom,” Henderson says. “I was young, 5 or 6, when my parents divorced. She spoke very little English when she got married. But she was independent, adaptive, and motivated. She did what she could, all while being incredibly supportive as a parent.” Henderson lived in Chicago from 1998 until late May, when she moved to Winnetka. “I love the proximity to the beaches, the greenery, the North Shore parks … everything up here,” Henderson says. “There’s nothing like that Midwest feel you get here. The people? Everyone is nice, kind, and happy to talk with you.” Henderson is in a good spot today, both in her environs and with her health. Her clarion message: "Listen to your gut and don’t be afraid to talk about it with anyone." Visit giresearchfoundation.org for more information. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
