IN WITH THE OLD BY MITCH HURST

THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

“Good bones” is a phrase you often hear when people talk about older homes, referring to the quality of construction and materials. On the North Shore, older homes are plentiful—many built centuries ago as summer homes for Chicago’s elite. While some buyers might choose to demolish these vintage gems and rebuild on what is likely a prime lot, others opt to restore the homes with the original architect’s vision in mind. This week, The North Shore Weekend spoke with real estate professionals across the area to get their take on why older homes remain appealing to some buyers, and to better understand the motivation for buyers who meticulously transform older homes with modern conveniences in mind. “What these buyers want is fine, one-ofa-kind attention to detail. They do not want the sport court; they do not need that fiveinch-thick quartzite on the island,” explains Jena Radnay, a broker with @properties in Winnetka. “They are refined buyers and they're looking for beautiful details that cannot be replicated.” Radnay will soon be listing an estate at 969 Hill Road in Winnetka that was built in the 1930s and has gone through a complete restoration over the past two years—overseen by Chicago-based architect J. Lawton Thies. It was originally designed by prominent New York architect Solon Spencer

North Shore present many opportunities for restoration and preservation enthusiasts. “I think Chicago has a particularly rich architectural tradition. There were a lot of really strong architects working here at the beginning of the last century,” Thies says. “Unfortunately, people move, and they immediately tear the house down and build something that has nothing to do with what they liked about the house in the first place. It really takes a dedicated, special kind of client to see these projects through.” Thies says he enjoyed his involvement in the 969 Hill Road project, in part because of the original architect’s eye for design and vision for the estate. “He was a better-known architect and made his name building a lot of these North Shore houses; he was very interested

Berman, who also worked on the Fine Arts Building in downtown Chicago. The home on Hill Road recently won a restoration award from the Winnetka Historical Society and Radnay says it’s a prime example of how owners get it right when they undertake a restoration project. “The architect took this house apart and, with integrity, mimicked everything that was in the original, including these beautiful French doors that go all the way up to ceiling,” says Radnay. “It's the most sensational rehab—talk about bringing back the integrity of old architecture into glory!” Thies, the architect, says Chicago and the Continued on PG 10

Many are architecture enthusiasts. “I think some people just really cherish the old classic architecture. They know what they want, and they are typically well-read about it,” Hellinga says. “I think it's just something people look for and love and appreciate in a North Shore home.” Hellinga thinks about owners restoring classic homes on the North Shore kind of like a musician playing Mozart, with an eye toward perfection. “It’s akin to the musician playing Mozart concerto. You can’t replicate history. “I think the appeal is typically the character that older homes sometimes possess that can't be replicated with brand new properties,” Molitor says. “Frequently, some of those homes are in such terrific locations in these areas because the villages were established so long ago. You can always change a house, but you can't change the location.” Molitor says where it gets tricky is with some of the larger renovations to an older home such as additions and other changes that may impact the structure. “There are box-like additions, but often if they’re done really well, they don't feel like

TASTEMAKER BY REDDING WORTH THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

A former Mayer, Brown & Platt attorney and McDonald’s Corporation corporate strategist, Mara Smith switched gears and founded Inspiro Tequila. Interested in the clean, gluten-free beverage, Smith searched for an additive-free brand with an appealing look, taste, and aroma. Not finding the perfect tequila, she decided to create one. She not only crafted an ultra-premium smooth and sippable tequila but she brought another female voice to the spirits industry. Women are involved in every aspect of Inspiro Tequila’s process from creating the taste profiles to getting bottles on the shelves. As a female founder, Smith’s mission is to inspire and support other women on their entrepreneurial journeys through financial support and mentoring. This inspiring and dedicated female leader sits down with The North Shore Weekend to share her secrets on how to stay current in a busy world. What do you read to stay connected with the business world? “I really enjoy business founders’ stories and I just read Believe It by Jamie Kern Lima. It is fascinating to see how other women got started and I always appreciate when they share their ups and downs. As marketing is a whole new area for me, I read a lot of books about marketing strategy. Most recently I read They Ask You Answer by Marcus Sheridan. This book provides practical advice for building a digital marketing strategy and it helped me prioritize an e-mail strategy for Inspiro Tequila.” What do you read for an escape? “Since traveling more lately, I have been indulging in the book Not All Diamonds and Rosé by Dave Quinn on my plane rides. BRIGHT MIND CAROLYN COLLINS HELPS TREAT THE MIND AND BODY FROM THE OUTSIDE, IN AND INSIDE, OUT. BY ALLISON DUNCAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

While a student in grade school, North Shore’s Carolyn Collins read the book Nobody’s Fault? by Patricia Hermes, in which a young girl is treated by a child psychiatrist after the death of her brother. The rest, as they say, is history. “I knew then and there that I wanted to be a therapist,” says Collins. She later studied psychology at Indiana University, then went on to receive her master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Loyola University Chicago and eventually, her post-master’s degree in art therapy from the Adler School of Professional Psychology in Chicago. “My practicum supervisor at Loyola said I practiced like an art therapist, and I’d never heard of that,” says Collins. “I’d been working on an inpatient psychiatric unit for kids at Rush Hospital and also with adult outpatient groups, and would bring out expression creatively, like through drawing. I used art as an adjunct to get at root issues.” After graduation, Collins pursued the art therapy discipline more closely, co-founding the nonprofit Art Therapy Connection and working in Chicago Public Schools as an art therapist for children with mental health and behavioral issues. At the same time, she was raising four kids of her own. “I was giving a lot of my energy to others but needed to pay attention to what was in my control,” says Collins. “I became very interested in how nutrition plays a role in health and wellness, specifically in its role in mental health. I pursued my health coach certification from the Institute for Integra-

“Each individual has different needs. It is my goal to help my clients discover what those are and to create balance in their lives,” explains Collins. “One of my biggest missions in life is to inspire and empower people to really feel their emotions,” says Collins. “When you feel good mentally, you feel good physically and are able to show up in the world and live life with purpose.” Most of her clients are now 18 years old and older, although she does still host workshops for teens and adolescents. Art therapy, she says, can be misinterpreted as a tactic for children, but she still uses the tool with adults in her practice today. “Most of my clients are high-functioning and Type A,” says Collins. “If they’re really in their head, I might ask them to draw something for me. It helps to get them into the right side of their brain instead of the left, which is much more logical. This way, you can connect the entire brain and the entire body.” Last July, Collins and her husband went on a quick trip to Michigan, staying overnight at glamping destination—The Fields of Michigan. The second she stepped onto the property, Collins knew it was where she’d one day host a wellness retreat, and she spent part of her 24 hours on-site writing an agenda for the first iteration, “The Art of Connecting.” “I spent time with my husband, too,” she jokes. Preheat your grill. Wash chard, leaving some water clinging to the leaves. Set aside. Slice peaches in half, remove pit, and slice each half into 1/8-inch rounds. Set aside. In a small bowl, combine 1/3 cup olive oil, honey, and salt. Heat in microwave for 20 seconds to melt honey; whisk

to combine oil and honey. Stir in grated ginger and several grinds of black pepper. Lightly brush chard leaves with the remaining 2 tsp of olive oil. Bring bowl of honey ginger oil, peaches, and Swiss chard to the grill. Place chard on grill, watching carefully until it just begins to char.

Flip and grill for a few more seconds. Remove from grill. Tear off the leaves from the chard stems into a bowl. Replace chard stems on grill and continue grilling until tender. Remove from grill. Coat peach slices in the ginger honey oil and place on grill until beginning to caramelize. Flip.

Remove peach slices from grill. The skins will now be easy to pull off and discard. To assemble, tear grilled chard leaves into small pieces. Cut grilled chard stems into 1 ½-inch pieces. Slice grilled peach rings in half. Toss all together with some of the remaining honey ginger oil. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

DOGGED DAVE LONGTIME HIGHLAND PARK MAILMAN DAVE PLUCINSKI DELIVERED MORE THAN MAIL—FRIENDLY GREETINGS, QUICK SMILES, LIVELY CONVERSATION STARTERS, TO NAME A FEW—IN A STEADY, 34-YEAR CAREER THAT ENDED LATE LAST MONTH. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

Highland Park mailman Dave Plucinski walked his route for the final time on June 30, and the numbers are in, none more eyeopening than the final one. 34: Years Plucinski, 65, was employed by the United States Postal Service. 250: Houses on his route. 1: Non-houses on his route (Bob O’Link Golf Club). 60: Weight, in pounds, of a dog-food bag he delivered. 8: Bottles of water he drank during a workday in mid-June, when the temperature soared to 96 degrees but felt like 196. 65: Typical number of hours he worked each week. 0: Times a dog bit him since he approached a mailbox, in a USPS uniform, for the first time in 1988. Chew on that oddity for a bit. “I know, I know—that’s pretty strange, highly unusual, for a mail carrier, isn’t it?” Plucinski, a Mundelein native and resident, says in between sips of his ninth bottle of water on that sweltering day, this time inside an air-conditioned Starbucks not far from his house. “You’d think at some point, given the number of years I’ve been doing this, that a dog would’ve attacked me. I have two weeks left … hope I didn’t just jinx it. I heard a dog bit one of our postal workers just last week. I’ve played with dogs on my route. “I love all dogs. I’ve returned stray dogs to their owners on my route.” And yet he never had to wince, not even once, because of a canine’s nip. But Plucinski left quite a mark on the folks who relied on him to deliver the mail Monday through Saturday for more than three decades. Why else did they throw a block party, featuring an ice cream truck, for him on June 27? Why else did his rabid fans, many of whom reside in the Burr Oaks neighborhood, secure a p ro c l a m a t i o n —

“In Recognition of the Retirement of Dave Plucinski”—by Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering? Plucinski’s humble reactions to all of the well-deserved fuss range from “Why all the fuss?” to “I just did my job and enjoyed it the whole time.” The demanding job took its toll on the 1975 Mundelein High School graduate, who worked a couple of positions at a hometown grocery store before joining the USPS at the age of 31. Plucinski deals

with knots in his back and shoulders and discomfort in his right knee. But he shrugs all of the maladies off, attributing each to a

comes-with-the-territory issue. “It’s pretty cool, being on a first-name basis with as many people as I have been in this job,” says Plucinski, who married his high school sweetheart, Sharon, in 1980; she plans to retire next year from her office manager job in Mundelein. “Most interactions I have with people on my route last 10 seconds. But many go beyond that, and I enjoy that time before heading to the next house. I got to see kids grow up, get married, and then move back to Highland Park. I know grandparents’ names and dogs’ names, of course. “It’s been fun,” he adds. “I’m going to miss Highland Park, especially the people of Highland Park.” If you’re wondering which burg he knows better, Highland Park or Mundelein, it’s the former—and he’s called

Mundelein home since the day her uttered “envelope” for the first time. Ask him anything about a house for sale in Highland Park, and he’d be more than happy to share his thoughts about the property with you. Plucinski had the same Highland Park mail route in the last 29 years, after “moving around” in his first five years. His very first day? “I was nervous,” he recalls. In recent years he’d drink coffee and have oatmeal and a banana for breakfast, before arriving at work—shod in his comfy New Balance kicks—to start sorting at 8 a.m. He’d make his first delivery at 10 a.m., and consume an energy bar, fruit, and a sandwich (not all at once) during the afternoon segment of his day. An eight-hour workday turned into a 10-, an 11-, or a 12-hour workday when he had to take care of portions of a vacationing colleague’s route. “People are surprised when they hear United States Postal Service carriers also deliver for Amazon and UPS, but that’s what a lot of us do,” Plucinski says, adding the USPS, like countless other employers, is short-staffed. “It’s not always easy, delivering a case of bottled water in a box. Those bags of dog food can be pretty heavy, and I once delivered barbells to a resident.” The only fairly heavy lifting he might do in retirement would involve the youngest of his four grandchildren. Son Steven is the father of 3-year-old Easton; daughter Stacy is the mother of Gavin, 5, Owen, 7, and Dylan, 9. All of Stacy’s children play baseball. Dave Plucinski played baseball in his youth, too, as well as basketball and practically every other sport under the sun and arena roofs. “I was never good at any of them,” he insists. Easton, the 22nd most popular name for a newborn (according to FamilyEducation.com), also happens to be the name of a Thousand Oaks, California-based company that manufactures baseball and softball bats, ball gloves, apparel, bags, batting gloves, helmets, catcher’s equipment, and related accessories. “I’m going to take it easy and spend more time with our grandkids,” Plucinski says of his post-Post-Office years. He won’t have to worry about keeping his 20 digits warm during the next polar vortex or protecting his skin when Highland Park turns into a Midwest version of Miami in July again. But Plucinski will have to do all he can to quell an umbrella-wide smile whenever it’s raining cats and … dogs. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
