THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
NEWS UNITED WE STAND
From PG 1
BY MITCH HURST THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
There are some who are saying that Highland Park will never be the same after the events on the morning of July 4. That may be true, however, there is hope that efforts being made by the city and throughout the North Shore to support the community will allow the healing process to begin. Over the last week, the outreach and support have reached a global level. Two high-profile GoFundMe campaigns demonstrate how the tragedy that rocked our community has brought the nation and the world together. One campaign has raised more than $1.3 million so far for Cooper Roberts, the 8-year-old shooting victim who was paralyzed from the waist down, and another has raised $3.2 million for Aiden McCarthy, the 2-year-old who tragically lost both of his parents. From here, the only place to go is forward. Each new day brings a fresh set of memories that reflect the determination and resiliency of Highland Park and its North Shore neighbors. Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering continues to play an active role in helping the community respond to a single incident that has put her city in the international spotlight. “My heart goes out to the victims, families, and our community. Like so many before us our community is devastated. It’s impossible to imagine the pain of this kind of tragedy until it happens in your backyard,” Rotering says. “There is no roadmap that tells us what to do next, but we cannot allow this shooting to define us. Each of us, in our own way, and in our own time, will find a way take a step forward as we remember the innocent victims.” Counseling services sponsored by local and national agencies were offered to all members of the public at Highland Park High School through this Saturday July 15, and the city has distributed resources via email to help families cope with the aftereffects of the shooting. Other North Shore communities continue to chip in. “For all those impacted by this horrific tragedy, we keep you in our hearts. As you know, the hub of resources and support has been held at Highland Park High School,” Deerfield High School Principal Kathryn Anderson said in statement. “Please know that support will continue to be offered for our District 113 students.” THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
In addition to mental health services, the Highland Park Community Foundation has established a July 4 Fund to which community residents and businesses can donate to provide assistance. “To help those directly impacted by the mass shooting in Highland Park, the Highland Park Community Foundation has established a July 4th Highland Park Shooting Response Fund,” the foundation’s website says, “All contributions to the Response Fund will go directly to victims and survivors or the organizations that support them.” The North Shore law enforcement community also continues to collaborate and support each other. As has been widely reported, law enforcement from surrounding communities, including Lake Forest, played a key role in apprehending the suspect the evening of July 4. The City of Lake Forest, along with the City of Highland Park, is one of nearly 30 members of the Lake County Major Crime Task Force, which is charged with investigating gun crimes on the North Shore and throughout Lake County. According to Lake Forest Deputy Police Chief Robert Copeland, the collaboration brings together law enforcement officers with a wealth of knowledge and experience. “The Task Force will probably end up working the rest of this week and then they'll probably turn most of it over to Highland Park,” he says. “That's kind of what they do is eventually whatever evidence they've been able to gather they compile the information into a report and hand that report over to Highland Park.” All of these community-driven efforts are perhaps best reflected in the experience of Highland Park resident Ted Pickus both on July 4 and in the following days. Pickus, a realtor with @ properties, was with his colleagues on a float waiting to enter the parade route when he heard the gunshots. “We were about two blocks away from where the shooting was. The parade had just started at 10 and the shooting was at 10:15,” Pickus explains. “We were getting in line and coming up to start the parade. Everyone was lined up in parking lots and a staging area.” Pickus says he found solace in attending a vigil at his synagogue, North Shore Congregation Israel. The church was also home to one of the shooting victims, Jackie Sundheim, with whom Pickus and his family were close. “Personally, I went to my temple where Jackie Sundheim, who I was friends with, worked, and had a vigil last Tuesday and that was super helpful for me,” Pickus says. “It was very therapeutic for my temple to have a service
and it helped a lot.” Pickus says his wife worked with Sundheim at the temple’s pre-school and his daughter was in Sundheim’s nursery school class. He has fond memories. “She had a heart of gold, but she had to be stern because she was the event planner. She had this warm heart but yet she was strong and firm when she needed to be and her position called for that,” Pickus recalls. “It was the perfect balance. Every time I saw her, she had this gleaming smile on her face and was always greeting people and wanting to make sure people at our synagogue were comfortable and had the support that they needed in terms of the events.” Pickus says @properties has been extremely supportive of its brokers and the community since the tragedy, including making a substantial donation to the July 4 Highland Park Shooting Response Fund and supporting its employees mental and emotional health. “My company put out on its website suggesting everyone make donations to the Highland Park Community Foundation,” he says. “I don’t know the
specific amount, but we also made a substantial contribution.” @properties is also hosting breakfasts in the community where its brokers on the North Shore can get together and talk about their experiences that day and look toward the future. The efforts are being led by North Shore Managing Broker Gorge Abreu. “Gorge was so on top of this. He was with the parade marchers, which really shook us all. He started a text chain and has been reaching out to us to make sure we're OK,” says Pickus. “He had a lunch all of us just to get together and chat and it really helps to be able to talk about it especially with someone who experienced the same thing you have.” More importantly, Pickus says, is how the whole community continues to support each other. It’s a sign of strength. “The community is really coming together, and I feel like we’ve been pushed down, but we're going to come back stronger,” he says. “What’s transpired is always going to be in our hearts, but in the end, we're going to be stronger and come together—united as one.”
MAY THEIR MEMORY BE A BLESSING The North Shore community continues to honor and remember the seven people who lost their lives in Highland Park on July 4. They include: Katherine Goldstein of Highland Park, 64 years old. Irina McCarthy of Highland Park, 35 years old. Kevin McCarthy of Highland Park, 37 years old. Jacquelyn Sundheim of Highland Park, 63 years old. Stephen Straus of Highland Park, 88 years old. Nicolas Toledo-Zaragoza of Morelos, Mexico, 78 years old. Eduardo Uvaldo of Waukegan, 69 years old. NORTH SHORE FOODIE
ZUCCHINI CAKE BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
When I was little, summer picnics, Ladies Aid Society functions, and fundraising bake sales always included fat loaves of zucchini bread. I remember asking my Mom why they called it “bread” when it was so obviously “cake.” Mom attempted an explanation of the difference between cakes and quick breads before I ran off to join my playmates—too young to retain the information. Tender, moist, and well-spiced, sometimes flecked with nuts, and always paired with a nice slather of cream cheese, I loved the stuff. I still do. This version, baked in an 8-cup decorative ring mold, befits the “cake” title I always wanted to bequeath on this vintage delight. Use either regular fresh green zucchini or Lebanese zucchini (Cousa squash) which is lighter green, a bit squattier, and has a thinner skin and sweeter flavor profile.
INGREDIENTS
• Butter or vegetable shortening to grease 8-cup decorative ring mold • 1 Tbsp flour to dust 8-cup decorative ring mold
nese zucchini (Cousa squash) Note: Wash squash, trim and discard stems and bottom bits, leave skin on) • 1 tsp. baking soda
• 3 large eggs at room temperature • ½ tsp baking powder • 3 tsp ground cinnamon (Saigon is • 2 cups sugar the most flavorful) • 2 cup vegetable oil • ½ cup chopped toasted walnuts • 2 Tbsp. vanilla extract (optional) • 3 cups flour • 1 Tbsp powdered sugar to garnish • 1 tsp salt
• 2 cups grated zucchini OR Leba-
cake
• Cream cheese to serve with cake
METHOD With oven rack set at center position, preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease and flour decorative ring mold. Set aside. In the bowl of a stand mixer with paddle attachment, beat eggs with sugar until very light and fluffy. Add oil, and vanilla. Add grated zucchini. In a separate bowl, sift flour with salt soda, cinnamon, and baking powder. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients in three additions,
12
mixing to combine each addition. Stir in nuts if using. Pour batter into greased and floured ring mold. Rap mold on work surface to release any air bubbles. Bake cake for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Remove to a cooling rack for 20 minutes. Invert cake onto serving platter. Dust with powdered sugar. Whip a small portion of cream cheese to serve with slices of the cake.

NOTABLY ELLIE UNIQUE EVENT PLANNER ELLIE NOTTOLI AND HER EMBOLDENED TEAM AT LAKE FORESTBASED ELLIESTYLED CREATE INDELIBLE MEMORIES FOR ATTENDEES AT A VARIETY OF GATHERINGS. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT
The compliment could have qualified as the understatement of the year. It ended up doubling as a career launcher. “You’re good at this,” a woman told ellie Nottoli, after Nottoli, a mother of five, had hosted yet another memorable event when she lived in Lake Bluff. More than 10 years ago, Nottoli, now a Lake Forest resident, chose the construction of a great horned owl’s nest—built near a ravine—as the party activity at her son Vincent’s 5th birthday bash at home, where about 20 partygoers had gathered. Vincent was wild about hoot owls back then. Nottoli also threw an autumn equinox party, replete with homemade scarecrows, apple bobbing, and a pie eating contest. Good? Nottoli was better than good—much better. “I was constantly entertaining at home, and I’ve always had a love for fashion, art and design, and entertaining,” the 45-yearold Nottoli recalls. “Business dinners, birthday parties, first communion parties, graduation parties, you name the party. I was a stay-at-home mom, and I loved that, loved the time I spent raising my children while planning for special occasions.” She worked in sales and merchandising at the Lake Forest clothing store Valentina for four years. But the 9-to-5 job did not quash Nottoli’s love for event planning in the least; she morphed the passion from an in-houseonly gig into a notable side hustle for friends, friends of friends, neighbors, or anybody interested in staging an event that would certainly widen eyes and smiles and generate a host of indelible memories. The word got out, steadily. You won’t believe the wonderful gathering that ellie Nottoli created for us last night! Nottoli then took her craft to a higher level. Her venture, elliestyled, was born in 2016. It’s a modern luxe lifestyling brand specializing in event planning and styling. Based in Lake Forest, elliestyled’s detail-oriented team excels at creating on-trend yet approachable weddings, gatherings, birthdays, and intimate dinner parties. It also provides many offerings, including event planning, party packages, workshops, styling services, and event rentals (from the elliestyled studio, which is located on Scott Street and houses candlesticks, vases, and collections of vintage glassware,
14
among other adornments). The elliestyled team consists of three fulltimers, two assistants, and a strike crew. Vincent, now 17, has worked for his dynamic mother as a strike crew member. “It was terrifying, starting a business like I did and at the time that I did,” admits Nottoli, who has gone by “ellie” instead of “Ellie” since the start of her middle school years. “I was a single mom, with five k i d s , and had very recently returned to the workforce. But I wanted to write my own story, as a business owner, and to be challenged, creatively. “I worked in retail before I got married, and it

wasn’t until I was 38 that I knew for sure what I wanted to do for a living.” Nottoli grew up in Lake Bluff and graduated from Lake Forest High School, where two of her children are enrolled. “Looking back, I would have loved to have been able to take the Business Incubator course that the high school offers now,” says Nottoli, whose other children are Bella, Nicholas, Lorenzo (“enzo,” for short), and Francesca. Today Nottoli could teach a course, or 20, in Advanced Event Planning. An elliestyled event has a luxurious, or elevated, feel to it. The business’s sweet spot, Nottoli notes, is an intimate home dinner party for 10-16 guests, featuring lavish, outof-this-world tablescapes and bararea themes that set intended m o o d s . Looking for a retro aura while entertaining, perhaps a 1950s or 1960s motif? Nottoli and her elliestyled crew would know exactly what to do to transform your digs. “We approach events differently,” Nottoli says. “We’re
| SATURDAY JULY 16 | SUNDAY JULY 17 2022
more than an event planner; we’re also an event stylist. We’re on-trend, without being predictable. I love mid-century modern, and I also love nature. I’m heavily influenced by the juxtaposition of nature and modern influence.” Elliestyled clients hail from the North Shore, southern Wisconsin, including Lake Geneva and Milwaukee, Chicago, and a slew of other suburbs, from Hinsdale to Naperville to La Grange to Western Springs. Elliestyled—booked for events, already, every weekend through November—was hired recently to stage a baby shower in an urban farm setting. “The pandemic posed a great challenge for us,” Nottoli says. “The events industry, essentially, shut down. But we figured out a way to stay relevant through videos, such as how to create charcuterie boards, and through selling kits, hundreds of kits. “People,” she adds, “re-prioritized after Covid faded. A lot of people looked inward, embraced their family more than ever, and appreciated opportunities to have family gatherings.” Among Nottoli’s favorite things to do in her free time is anything with her children, especially if it’s an activity outdoors. Gardening and cooking invigorate her, while antiquing and art museums inspire her. Motherhood lifts her. “I allow my children to teach me,” Nottoli says. “I’m open-hearted. I make mistakes; I learn life lessons from them. “My hope is that I’ve been serving as an entrepreneurial model for my kids since I launched elliestyled.” Elliestyled continues to soar under the direction of the inimitable and highly innovative Nottoli, who’s also a throwback who uses a wicker briefcase/satchel to tote her laptop, client folders, notebooks, and an old-school planner to meetings, including today’s face-to-face with an impressed journalist at Prairie Espresso in Lake Bluff. “I find rewarding moments at every event, knowing that we have touched our clients and been a part of their most intimate experiences,” Nottoli says. “We’re helping them make fond memories. “I feel honored every time an inquiry hits my inbox, because it means there will be a chance that I get to be a small part of someone else’s big moment. It’s a job I take straight to my heart.” For more information about elliestyled, call 847-664-9370 or visit elliestyled.com.
