Lake Forest Director of Parks, Recreation & Forestry Sally Swarthout says the Foundation is critical in helping the Parks and Recreation fulfill and expand its mission. “They’re very important to us and they have done so many wonderful things for us, everything from ball fields to batting cages to basketball courts to rescue boats,” she says. “They’ve helped with all kinds of things for this community that we’ve truly needed, and that not always public funds were available for.” Rick Amos sits on the board of the Friends of Lake Forest Foundation and has served as event coordinator for the Festival & Fireworks since its inception. “We’re a 20-person volunteer army, if you will, and our mission is to engage our residents and make them aware of all the great things at the Parks and Recreation Department,” he explains. Amos says Lake Forest is unique on the North Shore in that other communities have park districts that operate independently from city or village governments, while Lake Forest Parks and Recreation is a department of the city. The Foundation was created as a separate 501(c)(3) to raise funds for events and other activities.

There are certainly those that feel like to attract the next generation of residents we need to have the features that are important when considering where you want to live and raise your family,” Amos says. “One of our big amenities that we support is our lakefront. The Foundation board also provides feedback and interacts with the residents through surveys and assessment programs to help the city understand what the needs of the residence are as it relates to the Parks and Rec Department. “We hold our annual Festival & Fireworks event in July, have this Music Festival in August now, and throw a golf outing. the signature event of The Auxiliary of the Woman’s Board of Rush University Medical Center. At the time, The Auxiliary president is quoted as saying, “A Cooks’ Tour is the beginning of a great tradition to benefit a great medi-

This year, we’re showcasing luxurious and welcoming spaces including phenomenal outdoor kitchens, edible gardens, beautiful furniture, as well as structures for privacy, shade, and shelter—even a show-stopping, one-of-a-kind pool house,” says Tina Tedeschi, an event cochair. According to Co-Chair Jan Evans, “Given the realities of this last year, our goal was to plan a Cooks’ Tour designed to deliver an experience with an innovative approach to what has been an exceptional legacy event for so many years. They say it takes a village and, in this case, that’s very true. We expect to host hundreds of guests and that requires the effort of gracious and generous homeowners, sponsors, vendors, and our full board of nearly 70 women.” With preparations underway a year in advance, the dynamic event—the group’s sole fundraiser of the year—will also feature live demonstrations at each home, all related to living and entertaining outside. Highlights also include an invitation for guests to shop the Cooks’ Tour Al Fresco Market, new this year, in the courtyard of the Winnetka Community House. Unique home, tabletop and gift, as well as lifestyle items, are available for purchase, with vendors including Arch, B’s Gourmet Nuts, Dina’s Home, Fletcher & Fork, French Papers, Mandarine,

A long-time feature of the Cooks’ Tour, raffle prizes include Chalet Nursery’s expertly designed seasonal planters, a Peloton Bike, a luxury prize including a Gucci wallet, gift cards from Winnetka boutiques, Christian Dior friendship bracelets, and a piece from Jewelry designer Lisa Roberts. Event proceeds this year will benefit The

Woman’s Board Fund for Precision Oncology Research, ultimately helping guide oncologists’ selection of the most effective treatment. The support will scale and accelerate this research, positioning Rush investigators among a small handful of research groups in the country and one of the most well-equipped to translate scientific findings into patient care. “Our entire board is energized by our support of the truly groundbreaking work of Rush University Medical Center,” says Jeanne McAt-

amney. Heather Pigott continues, “By working together, we can and will make a difference in oncology research.” In addition to organizing the Cooks’ Tour, The Winnetka Auxiliary sponsors the Junior Auxiliary, comprised of high school students from the North Shore who plan and execute annual fundraisers including a Car Wash, Holiday Tea, and Fashion Show. All proceeds benefit Rush University Medical Center.

Dating back to 1884, the Woman’s Board for Rush University Medical Center is one of the country’s oldest hospital boards. In 1945, several members of the Chicago Woman’s Board organized an Auxiliary Board in their hometown of Winnetka. Their goal was and remains the same—supporting the Rush University Medical Center. NORTH SHORE FOODIE

PEACHES AND CREAM PIE

BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

If you’ve had the pleasure of plucking a

sun-warmed, fully ripe peach from a tree and eating it right there and then, you

know why peaches show up in my dreams. Velvety soft, juicy, and with the most fragrant nectar, peaches are one of my favor-

ite fruits. This old-fashioned pie is full of them. To make it, you’ll spiral peach slices over a butter crust and bake them in cream

with just a hint of sugar and spice. A good dream in the making.

INGREDIENTS FOR THE CRUST: • 1 ⅓ cups all-purpose flour • 1 tsp. sugar • ¼ tsp. salt • ½ cup (1 stick) very cold butter • 3 Tbsp. ice cold cream OR half-and-half FOR THE CRUST DUST: • 3 Tbsp. flour • 3 Tbsp. firmly packed light brown sugar FOR THE FILLING: • 7 ripe peaches, peeled, pitted, cut into quarters and thinly sliced (Note: broken and less perfect slices will go on the bottom of the pie) • 1 ½ cups cream • 1 large egg, beaten • 1 ½ tsp. vanilla paste (OR vanilla extract) • ⅔ cup sugar (divided) • 2 Tbsp. flour • ¼ tsp. cinnamon • ¼ tsp. freshly-ground nutmeg (OR store-bought ground nutmeg) • Pinch of ground clove

24

PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS

METHOD MAKE CRUST: In a large shallow bowl, sift the flour with salt and sugar. Cut the butter into tiny pieces and scatter over the flour. Using two knives, one in each hand, pull knives in a motion from the center out to cut the butter into the flour. Then, with cool fingertips, toss and break up each of the remaining larger bits into the flour until it resembles damp sand. Pour in the cream a little bit at a time and stir with a fork until the dough begins to gather up. Don’t add too much liquid, it’s okay if it’s not all one mass. Cover your clean worksurface with two sheets of overlapping plastic wrap to make a large square. Scrape the pie dough onto the center of the plastic. Pull the ends of plastic up around the dough and squeeze and knead through the plastic to form a nice ball

of dough. Cover work surface with another two overlapping pieces of plastic wrap. Place dough on the center. Flatten with your hands to make a ½ inch-tall disk. Cover with two more pieces of plastic wrap. Gently pat out dough through the plastic and then roll out dough to make a large circle. Place plastic wrapped circle on a pizza pan and place in refrigerator.

ASSEMBLE PIE: Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Remove the plastic wrapped pie crust circles from fridge. Roll out a bit to ensure the circle is one inch larger than the circumference of your pie dish. Remove plastic from one side of the crust. Flip crust over pie plate and ease into the plate, removing the remaining plastic. Gently nudge crust into the plate, pressing down to make sure there are no air pockets, leaving the excess dough around the circle extending over the edge of the dish. Fold and crimp the edges

of the pie crust to make an attractive fluted edge. In a small bowl, whisk brown sugar with 3 Tbsp flour to make the crust dust. Sprinkle over the bottom of the unbaked pie crust. Place broken slices peach over the crust dust. In a medium bowl, whisk cream with egg, vanilla paste, 1/3 cup of the sugar and 2 Tbsp flour. Pour mixture over the broken slices of peach. Starting at the center of the pie, spiral slices of peach in a circle, turning the pie dish as you go, continuing to insert slices of peach from the center outward to fill the entire crust in a pretty, spiral shape. Whisk remaining 1/3 cup sugar with the spices, then sprinkle over the pie. Place in oven and bake 50 to 60 minutes until crust is golden brown and filling only slightly jiggles when you move the pie dish. Cool on a rack for half hour before slicing and serving. HUNGER GAME LAKE FOREST’S ALICE MOODY—THE ‘ALICE’ IN THE LITERARY EXPERIENCE ‘TALKING BOOKS WITH ALICE & ANN’—CONTINUES TO CONSUME BOOKS AT A VORACIOUS RATE. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

Some nights, when a young Alice Moody was supposed to be sleeping at home in St. Louis but was reading a book under the covers instead, she’d have to release the flashlight she’d been gripping for hours. It had become too heavy for the rabid fan of Bobbsey Twins novels and Pippi Longstocking children’s books and any book by Judy Blume. Flagpole-heavy. But that never stopped Alice, a grade-school student at the time, from summoning the strength to lift the flashlight and shine it on a page or two for another minute or two. “I wanted to keep reading,” Moody, now 52 and a Lake Forest resident, recalls. “Had to keep reading. I loved reading. “I devoured books.” Moody’s appetite for the printed word hasn’t abated a lick. She and Lake Bluff denizen Ann Walters, in partnership with The Book Stall in Winnetka, are all agog about offering a unique literary subscription series, “Talking Books with Alice & Ann.” Here’s how it works: Every other month, beginning in September, subscribers will receive a book, selected by Moody and Walters, in the mail and a link to a 60-minute “live” edition of “Talking Books with Alice & Ann”—to be held the first Monday (at 7 p.m. CST) the following month. During the virtual, Siskel & Ebert-style conversation, Alice and Ann will discuss, dissect, and debate the work. Participants can submit questions and share comments via chat. A 12-month subscription (six books, six talks) costs $200; a sixthmonth subscription (three books, three talks) costs $125. “Ann and I went for a long walk one day and came up with book titles for our subscription series,” Moody says, adding 46 had subscribed through August 5. “None is a best seller; we chose books we thought had flown under the radar. And they’ll be surprises to our subscribers. You’ve heard of subscription holders of makeup products or clothing lines looking forward to surprises in the mail,

right? People love surprises. Ann and I figured, ‘Why not surprise them with books?’ “I promise people that the books (fiction and nonfiction) we selected will move them.

Each is thought-provoking.” Moody and Walters are also co-founders of the venture Between the Covers. They lead book discussions at independent book stores, community centers, and private homes and venues. Moody also launched Short Stories Live—dramatic readings and illuminating conversations—at Writers Theatre in Glencoe in 2019, and serves as a writing coach for teens who need a nudge, or an attentive audience of one, or an occasional “rah-rah,” as they craft their college-application essays and personal statements. Moody’s professional plate is so full, you can’t see any of its edges. “Reading and writing … my jobs and my favorite hobbies are one and the same,” says Moody, a Johns Hopkins University graduate who worked briefly for a small publishing firm in Chicago before realizing she belonged in a high school classroom, teaching English and enjoying the back-and-forth of a lively book discussion with students. Moody completed the Master of Art in Teaching English program at the University of Chicago and landed her first job in teaching at Joel Barlow High School in Redding, Connecticut. She taught sophomore English there. “My first Parents’ Night, I was way out of my element, incredibly nervous,” Moody says. “My voice was shaking so much. But I knew I had made the right decision to leave publishing, even though the idea of working in the publishing world thrilled me. I’d missed the element of sharing my perspectives on a book I’d just read. “Teaching was the best way for me to impart my passions for reading and writing.” The daughter of an obstetrician, the late Bob Cohen, and

Kay, an ace bridge player, Alice attended John Burroughs School in St. Louis, after having set an unofficial record for flashlight batteries used in a three-year span. She played varsity tennis, smacking her second serves as hard as she hit her first serves and deflating foes with her down-the-line backhand winners. “I took my schoolwork seriously,” says Moody, who also took it seriously at Johns Hopkins, in between her matches for the Blue Jays’ women’s tennis team. “I loved English and history, anything to do with stories. I wasn’t a recluse in high school; I wasn’t a cool party girl.” She’s a mother of two (Colin, 23, and Davidson College senior Izzy, 21). The mother of all writing coaches, particularly for college applicants? That very well might be Alice Moody. “My message to them is, ‘Your essay, your personal statement, matters to you and you only,’ ” Moody says. “Not to your parents. Not to admission officers. Not to me. That summer job, with a mean boss? I’ve read essays describing that experience. What did it mean to someone who didn’t make the volleyball team? To be the shortest person in a class? I’ve also read those essays. “Nothing thrills me more than to hear a teen tell me, ‘That’s the most important thing I’ve ever written. Thank you.’ ” Before moving to Lake Forest two years ago, Moody lived in New York, San Francisco, Denver, Los Angeles, Glencoe (20032013), and Lake Bluff (2014-2019). Moody and Walters expect to net outof-state “Talking Books with Alice & Ann” subscribers, in addition to avid page turners at the local level. That number of subscribers (46), in early August? Their target for the first month was 30. “Ann,” Moody says, “is so well-read, really insightful. She’s also good at describing a story, at engaging an audience, at connecting books to others. Ann has that ability to explain things in a logical manner. I tend to get emotional when I discuss books. “Our personalities … we’re going to play off each other well for our viewers, like Siskel and Ebert were able to do when they discussed movies. I loved that show. Didn’t you? You couldn’t help but get excited about the movie they were reviewing. One of our goals for ‘Talking Books’ is that people will have a better understanding of one another through book discussions. We’re hoping to generate more empathy and compassion in others, too.” For more information about “Talking Books with Alice & Ann,” visit betweenthecoversbookdiscussions.com/home-2/ or email alice@ platinumpenconsulting.com.
