rior Designer Annika Christensen and the homeowner is a triumph. Based on a fresh aesthetic and coupled with Scandinavianinspired nuances, the first-level entryway, living room, and kitchen feature a neutral color palette and minimal adornment. Nature-inspired artwork is showcased against a mix of elegant textures, statement lighting, and natural materials. The dreamy de Giulio-designed kitchen is both crisp and modern. Function meets beauty in what can only be described as a show-stopping pantry designed in white and camel tones. Cake plates and cookbooks adorn shelves housing perfectly stored pasta, sugar, spice, and everything nice. Marble installed from floor to ceiling on a kitchen wall delivers a dramatic backdrop to accents like nickel kickplates, limestone flooring, and a featured blonde wood beam. The lovely fireside seating area invites cozy conversation. Throughout the home, European touches match the home’s exterior—statement light ing choices sourced primarily by The Urban Electric Co. and Circa Lighting. The home’s design palette shifts from neutral to vivid in the den, where brilliant blue lacquered walls and an antelope rug anchor a sophisticated room designed for reading and relaxing. A re cently redesigned billiards and media room— which had been the home’s first-floor master suite—gives the home a lavish, extended entertainment flow. The crowd favorite, the “piece de resistance”

TOUR DE FORCE From PG 1
•
1/2 ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed 1/2 ounce simple syrup 2 ounces of your favorite reposado tequila (I favor Casamigos)
•
•
•
•
1/2 ounce dry curaçao, Grand Marnier, or your favorite orange liqueur (I’m crazy over Pierre Ferrand) 1-2 ounces club soda or sparkling water (I make my own with an Aarke) Pour lemon juice, simple syrup, tequila, and orange liqueur into a cocktail shaker and fill with ice. Shake for 30 seconds or until your hands are frozen, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass or a lowball glass filled with ice. Top with aforementioned bubbles. Drop in citrus wheels of your choosing and a sprig of mint or basil, if desired.
The classic margarita that you know and love likely evolved from a Tequila Daisy, mixed up for the first time during the mid-1800s. Daisies are a type of cocktail containing a spirit (most often tequila, though the first one recorded contained brandy), citrus juice, a liqueur and/or sweetener, and bubbles. The varieties on record are endless, so feel free to choose what tickles your fancy. I’m itching to try a grapefruit variation, but here I’ve chosen a classic. The only guideline is sticking to the proportions, though I personally advocate for extra bubbles…who wants to melt in the sun?

The school’s mission: “Inspired teaching, academic rigor, attention to individual needs, a commitment to responsible citizenship—these principles infuse every aspect of Lake Forest Country Day School and define our dedica tion to producing students of strong character with a passion for learning.”
It took John Melton around 3.4 seconds to discover that Lake Forest “isn’t a small town, but it sure has a small-town feel.”
LFCDS welcomes its nearly 400 students— age 2 through the eighth grade—for the start of the school year on September 1. LFCDS reminds Melton, 53, of The Coun try School. Each boasts a setting that optimiz es teaching and learning. Each encourages its students to think beyond books and homework assignments and class presentations. Just like that astute, compassionate eighthgrader thought some 12 years ago. “Her upbringing, I’m sure, was a factor that led her to come to me with her wonderful idea,” Melton says. “But I believe that the environ ment at The Country School also had some thing to do with her inspiration. The school and all of its constituents had made her feel comfortable enough to propose what she did. “Her fellow students,” he adds, “rallied around her idea. People acted. People cooper ated and collaborated and helped implement her idea. I see things like that happening at Lake Forest Country Day School.”
“I enjoyed working with kids as a summer camp counselor when I was in high school and college.”
The couple visited LFCDS for the first time in mid to late 2021. The campus and the warmth of those affiliated with the school wowed them. They got to see LFCDS’s In novation Lab and Outdoor Classroom. More warmth. They checked out the beauty in downtown Lake Forest and grinned until their faces ached. Then they grinned some more.
“I’d never heard of Lake Forest, Illinois, when, as I was looking at openings at schools around the country, my wife (Leigh) saw a de scription of Lake Forest Country Day School and said to me, ‘Read this,’” says Melton, a kind, calm, contemplative man who appears to own a single digit resting heartbeat. “It’s al ways been a partnership, my career.”
Their second visit doubled as John’s finalist interview.“When we arrived, we felt like welcomed guests, and when we departed, we felt as if we were leaving a place we had known and cared about for some time,” Melton shares with visi tors to the school’s site (lfcds.org). “My visits to the campus and interactions with the commu nity have convinced me that I will be the very best version of myself at Lake Forest Country DayJohnSchool.”andLeigh have two children: daugh ter Harper, 21, a senior communication studies major and lacrosse attack at Longwood Uni versity in Farmville; and son Hunter, 18. Each family member loves to travel. Not much thrills Melton more than the op portunity to visit an unfamiliar place. What does?“Getting to do it together, as a family,” he says.John Melton’s journey at Lake Forest Coun try Day is a few sunrises shy of two months, with years and years of bright days ahead. But don’t think for a second that he’s flying solo. Melton sees to it that LFCDS students, parents, faculty, and staff are on board, too. “Pursuing a vision at a school has to be a collaborative effort,” he says. “It’s easy to prog ress when there’s a total buy-in from faculty and staff. Add that to our school’s commit ment to including the students’ families in the partnership, and it becomes quite clear: Lake Forest Country Day’s entire community is in terested in the successful development of every student in the building.”
Lake Forest Country Day School, 847-2342350, is located at 145 South Green Bay Road in Lake Forest. For more information, visit lfcds.org.

Founded in 1888, Lake Forest Country Day School is a coeducational, independent private school. It’s the home of the Panthers, but it’s also the home of a natural, iconic mascot: the massive oak tree, strong and wide and beauti ful. It’s been a sturdy part of too many recesses to count in the school’s backyard playground.

The 2010 Haiti earthquake stirred an eighth-grade student at The Country School in Easton, Maryland. The devastation—about 220,000 people were reportedly killed, following a 7.0 magni tude temblor—gave her about 220,000 reasons to approach a teacher who also served as head of upper school at the time. “Mr. Melton, I have an idea,” the girl said while looking up at the tall adult. Her idea was a heartfelt one. Have the stu dent body of 300 learn all about Haiti’s culture, mostly through the Caribbean country’s art work, and then challenge the students to de pict the culture on a greeting card. Display the cards at a gallery, where the 10 best would be selected. Produce sets of the top 10, sell them, and send the money to a grieving, shattered populace.Oh,and one more thing: call the cards “Hai tian-ery.” How fun, how clever. “Great idea. I’m impressed,” Mr. Melton told the budding philanthropist. Mr. Melton is John Melton, now Lake For est Country Day School’s new head of school. The keen listener and positive-to-the-bone ed ucator started on July 1, succeeding Joy Hurd, who accepted the position of head of school at St. Bernard’s School in New York City.
