Burklin adds that a good realtor is going to be able to tell a buyer coming into their list ing or a buyer they are assisting everything about the community, including the schools.
“I had people saying, ‘Hey, what's up with that school?’ There's a nice little buzz around it right now,” she says. “There’s no inventory in Northfield. People are com ing from the city and are loving Northfield, so that's a big driver.” With so many school districts and private schools to keep abreast of, it’s crucial for brokers to find ways to get the information they need about schools to be able to advise clients.“It’simportant for us to have a general knowledge of the schools, but our North Shore communities all have excellent schools,” says Jamie Roth, a broker with Engel & Völkers in Highland Park. “I’m for tunate in that Engel & Völkers has a regional North Shore office rather than multiple offices in various towns, so we’re constantly sharing information with one another so that we are all up to date on school referendums, policies, etc.”
“A significant part of my contribution as a realtor is my first-hand knowledge of the area schools,” Burklin says. “I can provide in formation regarding distance to each school, transportation, and class size and, on a larger scale, the differences between high schools and what each one has to offer.”
Katie Moor, a broker with Coldwell Banker and the Dawn McKenna Group in Winnetka, moved with her family to Win netka just prior to the pandemic. She says it’s the number of quality education options parents have for their children that makes the North Shore stand out.

TOP OF THE CLASS From PG 1 Continued on PG 10
“The number one thing people come to the North Shore for is the schools,” Radnay says. “The number two criteria is just being in a community close to the lake and close to downtown.”
“I think for buyers who have school-aged children, certainly the breadth of options that we have on the North Shore from both the public and private perspective are why they find this area to be so attractive,” says Moor, who has two daughters enrolled in Winnet ka’s Sacred Heart School. “Parents are able to cast a wide net and feel good that no matter where they land on the North Shore, they're going to be in a solid school district.” She says this is especially significant for families that may have multiple children with differing educational needs.
Radnay says that what she’s found in working with buyer clients is if parents have already been engaged with their children’s schools in another part of the Chicago area, they don't ask as many questions. They already know the North Shore communities have everything they need. “I think it goes back to, what are their needs? Why are they leaving the city? Those who are taking their time may be thinking about moving up to the North Shore and they're going to be more specific. They're going to think about things like schools,” she says. “Do they want one school, kinder garten through eighth grade, like Sears (in Kenilworth)? It all depends on what the buyer is Radnaythinking.”mentions a new, state-of-the-art school in Northfield, Sunset Ridge School, as an example of how a quality school can attract new buyers to an area.
Jena Radnay of @properties has listed 921 Fisher Lane in Winnetka, which includes a huge reception foyer flooded with natural light and bench window seating. Radnay has also just listed 422 Sunset Ridge in Northfield, a large ranch home that is zoned for Sunset Ridge School, a brand-new school serving 4th through 8th graders.
“Parents might have, for example, one child at North Shore Country Day and one who's in public school, and even one that goes to Lake Forest Academy, just based on those kids’ individual needs,” Moor says. “I've had clients who send their kids to different schools just based on that child specifically. So, I think you can have an almost bespokelike approach to your children’s education.” Long-time Winnetka @properties broker Jena Radnay says schools are historically one of the biggest drivers for buyers on the North Shore, and that trend continues.
Susan Burklin, a broker with @properties in Highland Park, says if schools are at the top of the list for any buyer, the best decision they can make is choosing a broker who has a strong base of knowledge about the local community and its schools.
Roth says Engel & Völkers staff attend the latest school board meetings and are always willing to share what they’ve learned with brokers in the various communities in which the company practices.
“The North Shore is known for its edu cational system and offers public meetings which we can attend so that we are always in the know. There is online data and updates available, and it is incumbent upon us as pro fessionals to provide information to anyone considering a move here,” Matlin says. “This community has an extremely high percentage of return residents. Kids who grew up here want to raise their own families on the North Shore. Nothing speaks better for a suburb thanChristhat.”Veech, a broker with @properties in Winnetka, says regardless of where a family is relocating from, the North Shore offers a plethora of options. “Some families may be relocating here from overseas and looking for IB (Interna tional Baccalaureate) schools or interested in a dual language program for young kids or a specific foreign language or sports program for their high school age child,” Veech says. She says a few years ago she had a cli ent bidding on a house in Winnetka on a Saturday afternoon just before Saints Faith Hope & Charity School started for the new school year. “It was very helpful that I could text the school admissions admin to be sure there were openings available in the grades for their two kids,” Veech says. “That clenched the decision for my clients to outbid another offer to secure the home down the street from the school.”
Premier public and private schools have always been a key differentiator for fami lies with school-aged children looking to purchase homes on the North Shore. With many options tailored to children’s specific needs, there are few better places to raise a family than our communities. This week, we spoke with brokers from across the region about the quality of North Shore schools and why education remains a driving factor for many young families who continue to move to the area.

And so is Dr. Ann Marie Vertovec, who, after 30 years of 8:30 p.m.-6 a.m. shifts at Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospi tal, earned board certified status in Integra tive Health. Only about one thousand people in the United States can claim that. “It’s a discipline that centers on the physi cian-patient relationship,” Vertovec says. “It also empowers the self-healing mechanisms within the patient by emphasizing lifestyle and behavior changes.”

of Edward and Betty Ver tovec’s four children, Ann grew up in the western suburb Elmhurst and graduated No. 1 from her class of 860 at York High School, home of the Dukes. The gregarious Edward—a lawyer, a man with a heart bigger than a medicine ball, and a Thousand Points of Light Volunteer Award honoree—died in 2015 at the age of 91. Sharper-than-a-tack Betty, 98, lives in Elmhurst and could hum ble you in bridge, Gin Rummy, and Hearts, among other games.

Ann Vertovec met her future husband, at torney Dave Audley, at UW-Madison. Sons Sam (age 28), Ben (26) and Wilfred (24) also studied at the Big Ten school. Ann and Dave got married in 1992 in Gi braltar, the British colony in Spanish terri tory known for a Rock that doesn’t adorn a ringThefinger.couple moved to Lake Bluff in 1994, five years after Ann—a 1986 University of Illinois, Chicago graduate—completed her residency at University of Illinois Medical Center, Emergency Medicine.
Doctors in Emergency Medicine react to illnesses and Integrativeinjuries.Health specialists are proactive and all about preventive health care.
According to the Academic Consortium for Integrative Medicine and Health, “Inte grative Health focuses on the whole person, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic and lifestyle ap proaches, healthcare professionals, and disci plines to achieve optimal health and healing.”
A couple of months before she’d become an official University of Wisconsin Badger in Madison, Ann Vertovec traveled to Battle Ground, Indiana, to study wolves and serve as a volunteer researcher at Wolf Park. A piece about the Tippecanoe County park in the Chicago Tribune drew her to the Hoosier State that summer. Vertovec even tually devoured Never Cry Wolf, a book by Farley Mowat about the myths and magic of wild“Wolveswolves.are very social and little under stood,” says the 62-year-od Vertovec, who double majored in zoology and psychology but chose to pursue a career in medicine as an emergency care physician. “Wolves interested me then; they still do. “They’re smart and complex, incredibly complex,” the longtime Lake Bluff resident adds, “and they work as a group.” In other words, they’re into collaboration.
“Emergency Medicine was a newish field back then,” says Dr. Vertovec, who, at the beginning of her career, worked shifts at six hospitals, including Lake Forest’s. “One of the many rewards of working in emergency care is helping patients; I find that totally fulfilling. You get to interact with patients, solve their problems, get them to the right people. People are interesting to me.“What I learned early on was, don’t judge people, because it doesn’t do any good. I’m there to dig and find out what’s causing the problem that brought them to our hospital. After some 30 years of doing this, you get accustomed to reading people, to knowing whether it’s okay to bring up a sensitive subject like diet.” Because of her odd, vampire-ish work hours, Vertovec hired a nan ny/house manager, the beloved and immensely popular Rosie (every one in the neighborhood and their first and second cousins know the Haitian immigrant). But Ann prepared a to-die-for din ner for her boys before each shift and made sure they ate a healthy, tummy-stretching breakfast after eachSchoolshift.time for the sons meant bedtime for Mommy. Rosie, of Des Plaines, retired after a 26-year run with Ann and Dave’s family in December. Wilfred calls his mom “a real-life superhero.”“Motherhood,” Vertovec says, “is my greatest accomplishment. Getting to know my sons as adults excites me. It’ll never get old, enjoying them as the won derful people they’ve become. “I cherish every minute with them.”
Vertovec—now a semi-retired emergency care physician, working just two shifts per month at Northwestern Medicine Lake For est Hospital—is thinking seriously about championing Integrative Health as a lecturer, educator, or volunteer. Or all three.
“Getting back to In teractive Health and its objectives, being around nature relaxes you— it can be meditative, and that falls under a healthy lifestyle com ponent, one that can be introduced by a practi tioner to a patient,” she adds. “There’s exercise, too, along with food.
