On staff at the University of Chicago Sec tion of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Warner is double board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He studied at the George Washington University of Medicine, completed his residency at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and undertook an additional year of training in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Toronto.Today, Dr. Warner specializes in facial sur gery at The Warner Institute in Northfield, where he offers a range of surgical and nonsurgical procedures, including the SWIFT LIFT, an innovative technique of his own invention that reduces recovery time and is performed in the office under local anes thetic. But he still goes into battle, tackling cases that can be profoundly life changing as Mission Director of the Nepal Surgical and Medical Mission under the Face the Future Foundation.Everyyear, he and a team of doctors travel to Kathmandu to provide medical care for children born with craniofacial differences.

“Within the world of medicine, plas tic surgeons are known as the ‘marines of surgery,’ notes Dr. Warner. “We operate from head to toe, and work to restore deformities resulting from birth, trauma, or cancer, as well as change lives through aesthetic sur gery. To be able to navigate, with anatomic mastery, through the entire human body and solve whatever problem came my way. has been a fulfilling journey, from repairing injured nerves, to breast reconstruction after cancer, to microvascular surgery to transplant tissue from a leg to a scalp, and everything in Bornbetween.”inUtah, Dr. Warner lives on the North Shore with his wife Brittany and their three young sons. And avid skier, surfer, fisherman and golfer, he has completed two full Ironman triathlon races and proposed to Brittany at the finish line after she com pleted the same event in 2017.

NEWS 10 | SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 10 | SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 11 2022 THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND IN GOOD HANDS From PG 1 BY THOMAS CONNORS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

“While my practice in the U.S. is a mix of cosmetic and reconstructive work, going to Nepal is just simply jam-packed with complex reconstructive procedures that help solve problems for patients who would oth erwise not have access to this type of care.”

Nip tuck. Getting a little work done. The way we talk about plastic surgery doesn’t do the profession any favors. Or the physicians who take their work seriously—as opposed to those who will do absolutely anything a patient requests. Maybe it’s the way that ‘plastic’ seems to overshadow the word ‘sur gery’. Or the number of celebrity faces gone bad. But speaking to Jeremy Warner, MD FACS puts a whole new (forgive the pun) complexion on the matter.

A cut here may dictate a cut there to achieve the proper balance. The art of his practice, says Dr. Warner, is a combination of “personal principles, view of the world, and very importantly—experience. These play out even as he performs as common a procedure as a “Thererhinoplasty.aremany surgeons who see an ‘ideal’ nose in their minds and their goal is create that ideal nose in every patient,’ he observes. “I, along with many other rhino plasty experts, have a different approach. I prefer to listen to what bothers the patient and tailor an individual plan to meet their specific goals. I treat many patients who don’t want their nose to look overdone or would prefer to keep a specific quality to it so that they don’t look like a totally differ ent person. While I think an individualized approach takes more skill, it’s also more fun for me because it creates an endless amount of problem solving. And the work never gets boring!”

North Shore plastic surgeon Dr. Jeremy Warner. BY KATRINA WITTKAMP

For any physician, care is the foundation of the job. And that includes being a good listener and a good communicator. And all surgeons must be one part therapist, assess ing a patient’s understanding of what they are about to submit to and making sure that they are doing it for the right reason. “I was a psychology major in college and this has come to serve me extremely well in my field,” shares Dr. Warner. “Whether it’s for reconstructive or cosmetic reasons, the majority of procedures we perform are in some way shape or form elective—meaning it’s not an emergency to perform the pro cedures immediately. On top of that, plastic surgery is a field that lends itself to more creativity compared to other fields. There are almost always multiple solutions to a given problem, so we spend more time counseling patients on what those different options are, as well as a detailed discussion of the pros and cons related to each option.” There is an art, one could argue, to any sophisticated surgical procedure. But while a coronary bypass may be exquisitely executed, a thing of beauty to the surgeon, it is hid den away from everyone else, including the patient. But plastic surgery is often a highly visible affair, a matter of aesthetics, and the surgeon must be in full control of the composition.

ART OF THE MATTER

The Beatles song, “The Long and Wind ing Road,” might be a poignant reminder to Jonathan Rutledge about the importance of perseverance. Rutledge, an Evanston resident, is a military veteran, an almost federal law enforcement officer, former fireman, and current successful jewelry artist. It took a while, but he eventually found his calling. Rutledge will be one of many artists whose work will be on display at the annual American Craft Exposition at the Chicago Botanic Garden from September 30 through October 2. The highly competi tive, juried show and sale features crafts created by some of the country’s finest artists. The show will benefit NorthShore Univer sity designedaMoms,SaveSystem’sHealthprogramto protect and preserve maternal health before, during, and after delivery. For Rutledge, the cause is personal.

THE OF 67 FOUNDATION’S ANNUAL HOME TOUR ON SEPTEMBER 29 TAKES GUESTS INSIDE AND OUTSIDE SOME OF LAKE FOREST’S MOST EXQUISITE PROPERTIES. FREQUENTLY NOTED AS THE “BEST OF THE BEST” ON THE NORTH SHORE, THE FUNDRAISING EVENT IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

NEWS 18 | SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 10 | SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 11 2022 THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

“The event was so successful and beautiful that we have decided to highlight outdoor spaces again while returning to featuring some interiors as well—giving our guests the best of both worlds.” Guests who amble through the homes and gardens on this year’s tour will once again be able to enjoy small bites and beverages offered at each of the properties. The com mittee plans to highlight “tastes of the town” with samples from some of Lake Forest’s most coveted restaurants and caterers. As always, local designers and shops will set tantalizing tables that will be available to win or purchase. Fabulous florals displayed at each home will also be included among the raffle options.

“The committee organizing the home tour works tirelessly to consider every detail which is what makes it enormously enjoy able for our guests,” Spirit of 67 President Nicole Korczak says, adding that the tour will also showcase some of the grants that are awarded to District 67 schools. “Many grant awards will be displayed and even demonstrated for guests to see first-hand how their support positively impacts our children’s education. Additionally, student musicians and singers will provide beautiful entertainment at each of the houses, high lighting the enhancements made to our arts

SPIRIT

“It was held almost entirely outdoors, mirroring the entertainment trends during the pandemic. Guests were able to enjoy the homes’ beautiful gardens, outdoor entertain ment spaces, terraces, and pool houses,” adds Anna Theodore, VP of Communications.

OPEN DOORS

For nearly 20 years, the Spirit of 67 Foun dation has been raising money for programs to enhance the education of District 67 stu dents with a home tour like no other. While participants never know exactly which grand houses or estates are included until the day of the event, what they do know is that they will all be phenomenal. “The Spirit of 67 Home Tour always represents the beauty and elegance of Lake Forest, the generosity of its patrons and sponsors, the camaraderie of friends that tour the homes together, and a unanimous interest in supporting the students in our town,” explains Courtney Turner, Vice President of Events for the Spirit of 67. “Unlike most home tours, the Spirit of 67 Foundation’s signature event provides guests with the opportunity to experience multiple homes in one day, most within biking or walking distance. It entices every sense—visually stimulating décor; aromatic and colorful gardens; tasty small bites and beverages; and cheerful chatter with friends encountered along the way.” This year’s “Home and Garden Tour,” held on Thursday, September 29, features four Lake Forest homes—including two located on Lake Michigan with breathtaking views of the water and beach. For the first time in the event’s history, the 2022 tour will feature both picturesque interiors and resort-like ex teriors, all impeccably decorated to represent the finest in North Shore living. “There are expansive backyards and gor geous gardens in all, as well as cozy and intimate spaces,” Turner says. “The variety of homes and spaces that will be on tour per fectly characterize the allure of Lake Forest. We cannot wait for our guests to see them.” The change was inspired by the success of last year’s tour, which was reinvented to ac commodate COVID-19 restrictions.

It is nice to have the gardens still flourishing and outdoor spaces on the cusp of changing from summer to autumnal entertainment spaces.” Since its founding, the Spirit has contrib uted almost $6 million in grants to support excellence in District 67 schools—providing curricular enhancements, resources, and tools that enrich the educational experiences of all students. This lasting legacy is due to a team of dedicated volunteers, the generosity of district families, and the commitment of local businesses to support the mission of the Spirit.“Throughout their education in the district, our children benefit from grants in language arts, fine arts, wellness, math, technology, emotional wellness, science, social studies, and world language,” she says. “Each year, grant requests can be submit ted by any of our stakeholders—teachers, principals, parents, or students who identify an opportunity to add enrichment to the curriculum—who write and submit a request for a grant.” It takes a village indeed, Turner is quick to add, thanking everyone involved for making this signature fundraiser a reality. She says guests often cherish the program book they receive with admission and report feeling inspired to make enhancements to their own homes after the tour. “We hope everyone feels welcome to attend—whether you have students in our district or not. It is not unusual for grand parents, neighbors, alumni, or friends to join in on this special fundraising event,” concludes Korczak. “It easily becomes the talk of the town. Let’s just say the Spirit of 67 home tour will be the place to be on September 29.” Tickets are $125 ($100 for current Spirit of 67 Donors) and can be purchased by visiting hometour2022.givesmart.com.

W hether you have lived in your home for 5 years or 50 years, there are so many memories and stories within the four walls. At Engel & Völkers, we focus on structuring marketing around the seller’s personal experience in their home. By capturing your thoughts and memories of your home through the Home Journal, I am able to set your home apart from all the other listings on the market. Instead of cookie cutter marketing about the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, I can focus on the essence of your home and what will draw buyers in. While selling your home is a transaction, it is one of the most personal experiences you can have. The same is true for the buyers coming through your home. They need to imagine themselves living there. The Home Journal allows me to gain insight into your personal connection with your home and use it to market effectively. The experience is what sells real estate.

LIFESTYLE & ARTS 22 | SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 10 | SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 11 2022 THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND BY LAURA LAYFER TREITMAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND FULLY ENGAGED GALLERIST JENNIFER ARMETTA HAS BEEN WORKING WITH ARTISTS AND COLLECTORS FOR NEARLY TWO DECADES.

Aspect/Ratio Gallery, which focused mainly on video and performance art, that Armetta found herself finally ready to pursue her passion with full force. “The director was a long-time friend of mine, and when I stopped in one evening, he told me of plans to soon close. I called the very next day with a proposed agenda, and the rest, as they say, is history.” Armetta’s past had prepared her with the confidence to design a business and mission, the capacity to stage large-scale and collabora tive exhibitions, and to be the “connector,” as she terms it, that she had long desired to be in the art arena. “I’m not interested in working with artists who don’t want to work with us, and that does not come from a place of ego, it is simply vitally important that we are in a partnership.” With a roster of emerging and mid-career artists, Armetta categorizes much of their creative content as conceptual art. “What that essentially means to me is the idea is thegesture, thangreaterthework edcomplicatisyetbeautiful, both literally and figuratively,” she explains. “I chose the name ENGAGE Projects because I wanted a verb, an invitation to interact with me and with artists, to empha size participation rather than passivity. Even if people don’t want to buy, I want them to know a walk-in for a tour or conversation is always welcomed.”ENGAGE’s Summer 2022 shows sparked conversation by challenging the gallery’s pa trons to consider the human cost of outsourc ing labor and the power of text. An exhibition entitled The Residue of Labor featured works by Minnesota artist Chris Larson, who was inspired by objects found in an abandoned garment factory in rural Tennessee. The windowless factory yielded elements like time cards, old sewing machines, and zippers that Larson repurposed into paintings, sculptures, and videos. The exhibition’s largest work Thread Room, an immersive experience for the viewer, was created from some of the 50,000 spools of thread found in the factory; thread 700 workers had once used to sew clothing for high-end clients like Ralph Lauren and Burberry before their jobs were outsourced elsewhere. Seeing Thoughts Through, a show described by the Chicago Tribune as “playful, improvisational, and inspiring” was the inaugural exhibition of Alberto Aguilar, a Chicago-born artist and educator at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Aguilar used the common graphics of commercial signs for an uncommon purpose: promoting dissent rather than BOGO sales.

“I think artists are incredibly brave, offering very personal work that they then put out for the world to view and judge, and that is not easy,” remarks Armetta. “My objective is to help people understand and find links to such work.” She is particularly excited to connect artists to Chicago’s collectors because Armetta sees something special in Chicago ans’ distinct style of art appre ciation and acquisitions. “They want the whole experience, to come see the show, meet the artist, and have an artwork de livered to their home to see how it communicates in a private surrounding—it’s fantastic.” In October, Armetta opens a solo show of the immersive work of Edra Soto, a PuertoRican-born artist and School of the Art Institute of Chicago MFA graduate, whose installations have been displayed globally and can be seen locally at the Chicago Botanic Garden and Millennium Park. The floating horizontal shapes of CasaIsla | House-Island, part of a project to com memorate the Chicago Botanic Garden’s 50th anniversary, are an allusion to Puerto Rico’s island“Almosttopography.everyartist who we represent works to give back to our arts community in some way.” It’s a directive Armetta supports and celebrates, particularly given the commitment she feels to honoring those detours that made her own dream come true.

Armetta maintains a smaller permanent location for staff and a schedule of changing shows, along with a number of bigger off-site locations throughout Chicago and the rest of the country. The goal is to reach wider audi ences, form deeper relationships, and respond to neighborhoods looking for art enrichment.

The path that Jennifer Armetta, Owner and Director of Chicago’s ENGAGE Projects, took to becoming a gallerist was hardly direct. There were twists and turns, personal and profes sional, that she credits with leading to her most recent role. “Most of my family members were in the medical field,” shares Armetta, “and, since I always liked the sciences, I just sort of assumed that is where I would end up.” In her hometown of Minneapolis, however, a friend had a job at a local gallery and Armetta visited frequently. “That was really the start of my exposure to art and artists and my interest in the subject.” As an undergraduate at Boston University, she majored in art history. “I was hooked from my very first class, the Impres sionists, Expressionists, and so on,” recalls Armetta. “Matisse was my favorite artist back then.” In the early 1990s, after completing her degree and with one of her two sisters enrolled at Northwestern University, Armetta decided to relocate to Chicago. She wanted the city life and, having grown up in the Midwest, felt the location and size would be a perfect fit. “I was fortunate from the start to meet a number of influential people in the art world, both in gal leries and museums, and to foster relationships with a couple of wonderful mentors.” After her move Armetta required a practical pivot for more financial stability, so she took a position as a pharmaceutical sales representa tive. “How to build a rapport with people, de velop a sense of trust, obtain presentation skills, and think quickly on your feet—I acquired it all there,” she says, “and I use each and every one of those lessons in my business today.” While being careful not to stray too far from her love of the arts, she continued work on the side as an art consultant and artist advocate. In 2004, she helped found what was then called Verge, now known as Emerge, consisting of a group of collectors, curators, and art dealers seeking to bring more emerging artists into the permanent collection at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. Armetta is still a member and has served as Programming Chair on the Executive Committee. A few family-related moves between Los Angeles and Chicago’s North Shore offered yet another opportunity for a professional shift. Armetta joined an integrative marketing firm managing prominent national sponsorship events, includ ing “Ferrari Fantasia” on Oak Street and a polo match at the Oak Brook Polo Club with Prince Charles. During this time she also established her first gallery, Jennifer Armetta Fine Art, which focused on highlighting artists primarily from Minnesota and had considerable exposure on the coasts but not in Chicago. It was more recently during a visit to what was previously

SUNDAY BREAKFAST 26 | SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 10 | SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 11 2022 THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

People who’ll attend this weekend’s Wil mette Block Party, an event that has some thing for everyone, will be a part of some thing historical. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of something like that?

“If you live in Wilmette or have any ties to the village,” she adds, “you’re not going to want to miss the celebration.”

“It’s amazing to me, the number of parks and open spaces in Wilmette,” she says. “I’m telling you, the parks per square mile in the village … there’s practically a park in every Wilmette neighborhood.

Lindsay Thomas, nee Loekle, earned her wings in high school without spending a minute in flight school. Maybe you’re think ing right about now, I’ll fly to any destination in the world but only if Thomas is sitting in 18A, not on the left side of the cockpit.

REDOUBTABLE THOMAS

Lindsay Thomas was a staff assistant/rec reation specialist at the Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association (NSSRA) in Northbrook from 2010-2014, before landing the position of recreation supervi sor at Wilmette Park District. She’s held her current post at the park district since 2019. “I love planning events,” says Thomas, who points to her late father, David (an IT technician/fervent golfer/serial homeimprovement-project toiler), as the figure who’d instilled the nose-to-the-grindstone work ethic in her at young age. “It’s been a passion of mine for quite some time. I get to organize events that bring people to gether, that make people smile for hours.

The other bands scheduled to entertain are Hoopla, Antler Chandelier, and One Night Band.Thomas served as the tireless Wilmette Park District liaison while organizing the prep work for the multifaceted gathering. Chris Canning, one of four Sesquicenten nial Celebration Committee co-chairs (with John Jacoby, Nancy Canafax, and Vern Squires) dubs Thomas “the backbone” of THE Wilmette Block Party and two other recent 150th Anniversary happenings: the Ouilmette Foundation’s Beach Bash (August 20) and the Evanston Symphony Orchestra concert at the Wallace Bowl (August 24), an amphitheater at Gillson Park. The latter drew some 2,000 concertgoers, including rapt youngsters Ryan and Nick Thomas.“Lindsay’s many contributions,” Canning adds, “have made Wilmette’s Sesquicenten major in family and con sumer sciences. She spent a summer and more than half of her sophomore year (May through No vember) in Disney World’s “The College Program” in Orlando, Florida, working as a Chef Mickey’s hostess at Disney’s Contemporary “The ‘people’ person in me wanted to pursue a career in Schoolforclasses.management,”hospitalityThomassays.“ButthatchangedafterIhadaconversionwithoneofmy(SigmaKappa)sororitysisterswhenIreturnedtocampus.Sheencouragedmetotryleisurestudies,becauseshethoughtitwouldbeabetterfit.Ilookedintoit.“MyjunioryearIdeclaredmymajor,recreationadministration.”AtennisplayernamedChriswasinmanyofherrecadminShetooknotestheNewTrierHighgraduatewhenan arm injury took away his ability to jot. They reconnected via Facebook after graduation and began dating when Lindsay was an office manager at TJM Brokerage in Chicago. They became Mr. and Mrs. Thom as and, before settling in Glenview more than three years ago, lived in Northbrook, Mount Prospect, and Arlington Heights.

Thomas could spend at least an hour discussing Wilmette’s unique attributes. It’s her work hometown, after all. Plus it’s where her future college classmate/hus band grew up as a son of Gary and Sandy Thomas and started hitting all those cross court winners and effective serves.

Forget the star quarterback, the ace tennis player, the audacious pole vaulter. Nobody deserves to sport a varsity letter more than the fearless cheer flyer does. But Thomas, a Glenview resident since 2019 and the mother of two sons (Ryan, 6, and Nick, 4), also has earned the right—to day—to wear a big ‘W’. ‘W’, as in Wilmette, born on September 19, 1872. The village’s yearlong Sesquicen tennial Celebration culminates at THE Wil mette Block Party on Saturday, September 10. The 11 a.m.-11 p.m. fest for all ages will be held at the Village Center (1101 Lake Avenue) and peripheral spaces, and feature a parade of dignitaries led by the Loyola Acad emy Marching Band, a Kids’ Zone, food and beverages, and performances by four bands, including Tributosaurus, which will morph into the Rolling Stones right before your eyes and ears (especially your ears).

Chris Thomas — who, as a senior dou bles player with classmate Tony Soruco, captured a sectional championship and helped New Trier’s Trevians place second at the state tennis meet in 2004 — is a tennis pro at College Park Athletic Club in Ban nockburn and the head boys tennis coach/ assistant girls tennis coach at Glenbrook South High School in Glenview.

Dur ing a routine that’s anything but routine, a flyer gets launched due north by one or two teenagers, prays she doesn’t conk her head on a gym rafter, and then prays doubly—on the way down—that a teenager catches her cleanly.Drops in football are forgiven way more than they are in cheerleading.

People who’ll attend this weekend’s Wilmette’s Block Party, an event that has something for everyone, will be a part somethingofhistorical.

“I dabbled in a lot of sports,” says the 37-year-old Thomas, now soaring toward cirrus-cloud heights as Wilmette Park Dis trict’s ever-energetic and ever-ever-convivial manager of district operations.

Also second to none: Lindsay Thomas.

HIGH-FLYING CHEERLEADER AND CURRENT WILMETTE PARK DISTRICT DIRECTOR LINDSAY THOMAS CAN’T WAIT TO ROOT, ROOT, ROOT FOR WILMETTE AT THE 150-YEAR-OLD VILLAGE’S BLOCK PARTY THIS WEEKEND.

“And you can’t beat Gillson Park, a won derful park, a park that has everything.”
