Marimekko’s vibrant textiles and apparel in the United States, had fond childhood memories of both the cheerful fabric patterns and the high-quality but accessible home-goods design his parents championed. “Our home was full of simple but beautifully designed functional items— everything from coffeemakers, to chairs, and tables,” says Robert. “I especially remember a Design Research wicker sofa with cushions covered in Unikko, the iconic poppy pattern by Maija Isola that Marimekko was known for,” he notes. While he didn’t take scissors to cut the poppies out of the cushions, he did start collecting. “I would visit the Crate & Barrel offices and sample room, and if there were Marimekko samples that the buyers didn’t approve or need anymore, I’d bring them home,” he recalls. So when Alicia made her first visit to Robert’s home, “Robert ran out to fetch this enormous stack of Marimekko fabric

Kouri, Stephen Eichhorn, and Andrew R. Wright. Equally as exciting, this fall, UK industrial designer Aaron Probyn launches his first stand-alone collection of tableware and accessories with Unison. With 200 different collections and counting, Unison was recently named as a fastest growing private company in the United States by Inc. Magazine. As the Segals talk about the work, you notice that many of the items they are showing have a clean, simple style very much in keeping with the modern, minimalist aesthetic that’s carried throughout their home. “That’s no accident!” laughs Alicia, pointing out vases by Maaria Pykäläinen, original quilts using vintage Marimekko fabric by Katy Elo, a rug by Armi Ratia, and a blown glass and ceramics collection from Finland. In fact, Alicia and Robert fell in love over Scandinavian minimalist design. More specifically? Over textiles by Finnish design icon Marimekko, as the two gifted creatives met throughout their high-school years to talk about music, fashion, art, and design. “We were obsessed,” explains Alicia, whose parents, a landscape architect and art instructor, filled their 1950s Glencoe

home with good design—furniture by Charles Eames and George Nelson for Herman Miller, and colorful accents, like Alicia’s childhood bedding, by Marimekko. In fact, Alicia liked the bright red and pink design called “Happy” by artist Fujiwo Ishimoto on her bedding so much, “I took my scissors and tried to cut the hearts out of “Happy,” she smiles. Meanwhile, Robert whose parents founded Crate & Barrel in Chicago in 1962 and pioneered Finland-based

samples, T-Shirts, and other apparel. I was so impressed.” While they laugh about it now, Marimekko’s early influence in the couple’s lives would lead the two up the path that eventually resulted in their launch of Unison. worked at Marimekko for five years. “We were deeply impressed with the culture, the design, the environment, and the atmosphere there,” says Robert. “And as a company, Marimekko always took a very painterly approach to textiles, hiring young creatives who were encouraged to draw and paint patterns that the company had the technology to reproduce.” While there, Robert was given the opportunity to design fabrics, and to help with several product lines. “It was a very exciting time because Europe was in the middle of a rebirth and new appreciation for Scandinavian modern design—both the original work, and the new creations artists made in that spirit,” says Robert. Returning to the United States in 2004, when modern design magazines such as Dwell and Wallpaper had taken hold, and interest in new modernism was exploding, “We knew it was the right time to start our own company,” says Robert. Initially launched with a collection of bedding, Unison began as a wholesale company. But as the couple expanded their offerings to include limited editions of artist-made home-design objects, “It just made sense to transition away from wholesale to a direct-to-consumer business, with the emphasis on online sales,” he explains. With so many talented artists in the Chicago area, the couple started working

with local makers and designers. Unison’s upholstered bed frames are manufactured on the south side of Chicago by a familyowned company that has been in business

since 1946. A collaboration with Chicago artist Chad Kouri resulted in a unique throw blanket and a hand-tufted rug being introduced. At the same time, their family had grown to include three children. “We knew we wanted to move to the North Shore to be closer to our parents,” says Alicia. “But finding an existing home that fit our design aesthetic, seemed impossible. We thought we would have to build.” Then a small miracle happened.

“We couldn’t believe our luck,” says Robert. Built on a well-wooded lot, the home, like others Grunsfeld built, was created with windows and orientation designed to capture the best light at all times of the day. The Japanese tradition of positioning the home’s front door at the end of a bending path was used along with an expansive entryway. Other features include the 13-foot ceilings, a 25-foot wall of windows and a massive, stone fireplace in the living room. Floors are of pecan wood, stone accents are fossil and because the house was originally built for a gallerist’s art collection, lighting is designed to showcase artwork. “When we moved into the space, we were coming from a loft in Chicago, but had no paintings or artwork, except for the textiles and blown glass we had collected from Scandinavia,” says Alicia. New furnishings in their home now include Irving sofas, LaSalle floor lamps, Kolmar dining table, and 811 dining chairs all from Unison. And given the vast expanses of clean wall space and gallery lighting, they invested in paintings, drawings, photog-

place. In the dining area, twin large-scale floral collages by Stephen Eichhorn are mounted. Photography by Debbie Carlos as well as work by Matthew Hoffman, the custodian of the You Are Beautiful campaign, are also displayed. “When I grew up, my mother had an easel for us in the backyard and my father used to bring home his hand-drawn design blueprints for me to color,” says Alicia. “They always encouraged us in our art and experience of beautiful interior and exterior spaces. It feels good to raise our children with a similar outlook.” Looking ahead, Alicia and Robert hope to bring good design into the consciousness of more Americans through Unison. "We believe versatility and quality are what people are looking for,” says Robert. “We strive to create and offer product that is warm and approachable through honest materials, quality craftsmanship, and a neutral color pallet—all of this to fit harmoniously into each individual’s home." IN MEMORIAM REMEMBERING THE LIFE OF DENNIS “DENNY” BANNER, A LAKE BLUFF RESIDENT AND NAVY VETERAN WHO TURNED HIS PASSION FOR FLYING INTO AN AVIATION ENTERPRISE. BY SHERRY THOMAS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

The North Shore community is mourning the loss of businessman, husband, and uncle, Dennis “Denny” M. Banner of Lake Bluff. Denny, who died at age 78 on July 8, was a quiet giant in the world of private aviation. He and his wife, Susan Banner, were known throughout the Chicago area for Banner Aviation, a company the former Navy man founded in 2004.

“He was a lovely husband … a wonderful husband. We are all heartbroken.

According to interviews published in Forest & Bluff magazine and The North Shore Weekend over the years, Denny first discovered his love of flying by taking lessons at the military airport at the suggestion of some of the pilots on his Navy baseball team. “It grabbed me right away. I love airplanes, and I love airplane people,” he said. “It’s a love affair.” Upon returning to the states, he acquired all his flying certifications with money he received from the G.I. Bill—acquiring a private pilot’s license in 1966. Denny proceeded to spend most of his years since then in the air, sharing his passion with Susan. What started as a hobby during his tenure as Vice President, Corporate Sales for CBS Publishing, soon became a way of life for the couple. Together they owned over 50 airplanes, including turboprops and jets, as he racked up more than 10,000 hours of flying experience. And when Banner Aviation was launched 17 years ago, the couple found themselves in the company of many of Chicago’s most notable celebrities. From politicians to sports superstars (Michael Jordan) and high-profile Hollywood personalities (Oprah Winfrey), the list of clients to whom Denny provided private air transportation and expert advice on private aircraft ownership to a veritable “Who’s

Who in Chicago and the Midwest.” However, those who knew Denny would immediately tell you that he was never one to boast about those connections. In fact, he took great pride in keeping his exclusive list of VIP clients to himself. “As you might expect, we keep our client list confidential,” he once told a JWC Media reporter during an interview at a Waukegan hangar. “Let’s just say that I’ve worked for some of the most famous figures in Chicago, some very high-profile political personalities, and several television and film stars.” The difference between Denny (who came to be known as the “Airplane Guy”) and his “lifestyles of the rich and famous” client base was the meticulous work he did behind the scenes to ensure his customers

the most intelligent, efficient, comfortable, and cost-effective way to get from Point A to Point B. Through Banner Aviation, he handled everything from designing airplane interiors to hiring aircraft staff to guiding clients through the complicated and daunting process of buying and/or selling airplanes. If you wanted him to fly the plane himself, he’d do that too. Denny often said the favorite part of his job was not the glitz or the glamour. He merely loved meeting people who shared his passion for flight and helping them make the right decisions. As news of his death continues to spread throughout the North Shore and Chicago, he is mourned by friends, clients, and family—including his loving wife Susan (nee

Farmer); siblings John Banner, Jim (Laurell) Banner, Kitty (Bob) Seemann, and Ginny Banner; and beloved nieces and nephews. A funeral mass was held in mid-July at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Lake Forest. “He was a lovely husband … a wonderful husband,” Susan Banner told The North Shore Weekend earlier this week. “We are all heartbroken.” Those who knew Denny say he will be remembered for his humility and kindness. But perhaps the most telling detail about a life well lived can be found in the response he gave in an interview with Forest & Bluff several years ago when asked to name his favorite place in the world to travel. “Home,” he said. “A successful landing at the Waukegan airport is my favorite destination.” THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

SMOKEY CAJUN DIRTY RICE WITH ANDOUILLE BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Every chicken you roast comes with a packet of little gems—the gizzard, liver, and such, which are good additions to a rich stock, stuffing, or gravy. But in my book? The best use for these unassuming parts is to make a big pot of Cajun dirty rice. The “dirty” in the title comes from the dark color these bits add to the finished rice. If you’ve never had dirty rice, you’ll be shocked (as my boys were) at how gizzards and livers transform in this dish to something so delicious. Made with plenty of garlic, peppers, spices, and onion— plus ground pork and rice that plumps up in stock—I like to enhance the flavor even more with smoked turkey necks and some andouille sausage. This recipe makes a big pot of comfort—ten generous servings. I like to serve it with okra or greens on the side.

INGREDIENTS • 6 cups chicken stock • 1 ½ lb chicken gizzards (I used Amish) • 1 lb smoked turkey neckbones • 1 lb ground pork • 3 Tbsp bacon fat • 6 Tbsp butter, divided • 1 large onion, peeled, cored and chopped to make `1 ½ cups • 3 ribs celery, chopped to make 1 cup • 2 Cubanelle or Anaheim peppers, chopped to make 1 cup • 1 bell pepper, chopped to make ¾ cup • 6 cloves garlic, minced to make ⅓ cup • 3 tsp smoked paprika • 1 tsp cayenne pepper

METHOD • 1 tsp fresh ground black pepper • 2 tsp fresh thyme leaves • 2 tsp salt • 1 lb chicken livers, connective tissue removed, livers chopped small (I used Amish) • 2 tsp sherry • 1 tsp sugar • 3 cups long grain rice (I used basmati) • 12 oz. package Cajun-style andouille sausage • Chopped green onion or chives to garnish • Hot sauce

In a stock pot over medium heat, add chicken stock to cover gizzards and smoked turkey neckbones and heat to boiling. Reduce heat to low and simmer for ½ hour. Remove gizzards to the bowl of a food processor. Remove turkey necks to a bowl to cool. Reserve chicken stock. Pulse the food processor to grind the gizzards to a fine crumble. When the turkey neckbones are cool enough to handle, remove/shred as much of the meat as you can. In a large Dutch oven over medium heat, add bacon fat and 3 Tbsp of the butter and fry the ground gizzards with the ground pork. Sauté until the ground pork is cooked through. Stir in the turkey neck meat. Reduce heat to medium low. Add onion, celery, peppers, garlic and spices. Stir, cooking for five minutes until vegetables begin to soften. Add 1 cup of the reserved chicken stock. Cover and cook

until the vegetables are soft. Add the rice and the rest of the stock. Increase heat to high. When stock boils; immediately reduce heat to low. Cover. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes until rice is tender. Set aside. Heat oven to 300 degrees. While oven preheats, in a sauté pan, melt remaining 3 Tbsp of butter. Fry liver until cooked through. Deglaze pan with sherry; stir in sugar. Stir livers in with the rest of the mixture. Place Dutch oven in preheated oven, uncovered for 15 minutes. While rice heats in oven, cook andouille with 1 cup water in a sauté pan for 10 minutes. Drain any remaining water; continue cooking andouille in pan until browned. Slice. Add andouille to the dirty rice. Fluff rice. Serve dirty rice sprinkled with green onion and plenty of hot sauce. BLADE WINNER YOUTH PUCKSTERS CONTINUE TO DEVELOP UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF TOM GULLEN— SYNONYMOUS WITH ‘WINNETKA HOCKEY CLUB’ FOR 40 YEARS. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

Had Tom Gullen not attended Winnetka Hockey Club’s inaugural WarriorFest in late August, it would have been akin to Lollapalooza without music. Or an auto show without autos. The 63-year-old Gullen—affiliated with the Winnetka Hockey Club since 1981, either as a Warriors youth coach or as an administrator—showed up at the gathering held on August 28 at Little Duke Field, south of Winnetka Ice Arena, and faces around him probably lit up like hockey-net lamps do after goals. “That was a special day,” recalls Gullen, the Winnetka Hockey Club executive director since 2015, when he concluded his 35-year career with the Winnetka Park District as a facilities manager or superintendent. “The hockey club has been a big part of many lives. The event gave me the chance to catch up with past presidents (parents of players, mostly) of the club. I learned something from each of them. “All,” he adds, “understood the core values of youth hockey and the mission of the Winnetka Hockey Club. Youth sports, lately, have become more specialized, more individualized. But not at our club. We’ve stayed true to our foundation. We’re still a communitybased organization that allows good friends to play competitive hockey together. I’m proud of that.” Players (ages 5-14), hailing from Winnetka, Glencoe, Kenilworth, and Northfield, play on Winnetka Hockey Club Warriors teams. Gullen, a Winnetka resident who lives “a 7-iron shot from the club’s ice arena,” coached one Warriors team, sometimes two, each year for decades. Three of his U-12 squads qualified for nationals, with the best— his 1993 edition—finishing runner-up when the tournament was staged at Winnetka Ice Arena. “What a neat, fun experience,” Gullen says. “Our home arena’s stands were packed for that championship game. Coaching has always been close to my heart. It allowed me to connect with people, to develop lasting relationships.” Gullen’s first hockey coach was Bruce Carman. Gullen grew up in Deerfield and played right wing for Carman’s teams. Some practices started at 5 a.m., at a rink in Chicago. Carman drove Gullen, a 1976 Deerfield High School graduate, to those early-morning sessions. “He did that because he wanted to make sure I’d get to the rink,” Gullen says. “He was a mover and shaker, a comedian, and a man who had a huge influence on me. I loved the

sport more than I was good at it. I was the weakest kid on the team, but it never felt that way due to the way Coach Carman coached. Coach Carman built his players up. We liked playing and, thanks to our coach, we never got hung up on wins and losses.” Gullen attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and majored in Parks and Recreation. At age 22 he was hired by the Winnetka Park District as its assistant facilities manager. Promotions ensued, as did the opportunities to coach mad-abouthockey kids. “I was a demanding coach,” Gullen says. “And probably more vocal than I’d like to admit. I expected a lot and got a lot in return. Outworking the other team was always the goal, right up there with helping our players develop a solid foundation of skills. I always encouraged my players to play hockey outdoors, like I did in my childhood. Outdoor hockey, with friends, was where I had the most fun.” Gullen had a blast watching Winnetka Hockey Club’s house league championship games on “Super Sunday” in early March. The 2020 “Super Sunday” had to be scrubbed because of the pandemic. “That Sunday is one of my favorite days of the year,” Gullen says. “It’s rewarding for me to see recreational players, full of passion from start to finish, playing their favorite sport in front of a lot of people. You should see the way the kids celebrate after scoring a goal on a ‘Super Sunday.’” “That Sunday,” he adds, “always includes fun, spirit, energy, camaraderie.” Gullen is thrilled about the Winnetka Hockey

He has coached at Tier 1 and Tier 2 levels in Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin since 2006. “Chris is highly regarded in the field of skills development,” Gullen says. “We’re quite fortunate to have him as our director.” The director of the skating program at Saddle & Cycle Club in Chicago is a Gullen. Tom’s wife, former competitive figure skater Mary LeBeau Gullen, got named to the post 30 years ago. Tom and Mary have two grown children— 30-year-old Meg, of Park Ridge, and 27-year-old Dana, of Lincoln Park—and a grandson named Brooks Thomas Moorman, Meg’s child. When he isn’t loving life as a grandpa, Tom finds joy on a golf course and on a sheet of ice in an arena. Yes, Mr. Winnetka Hockey Club still plays competitive hockey and has as much fun with a puck on his stick today as he did when hit frozen ponds for games with his buddies in the 1970s. “High school hockey, club hockey, pond hockey, I enjoyed all levels of the sport in my youth,” says Gullen, who was inducted into the Illinois Hockey Hall of Fame (Builders category) in 2010. “But I knew I wasn’t good enough to play hockey at higher levels after high school. I did know, after my college years, that I wanted to at least be near the sport. Working for the Winnetka Park District led to coaching opportunities with the Winnetka Hockey Club. “The most meaningful experiences, in any profession, are usually those involving people,” he adds. “Coaching hockey set up those experiences for me.”
