“What’s the value of an arts education if you’re not going to use it?” says Hettrich. “I had a painting concentration in college and worked on oil paintings. Art is a combination of complex problem solving and deft creativity. I still apply that to my work. With the

“I was always the kid drawing in my free time, especially when I shouldn’t have been—like dur ing class,” laughs Hettrich. “I studied Fine Art at Denison University in Ohio but was hedging a little in college, thinking I’d get a well-rounded education, too.”Hettrich has been in business for himself since 1998. And while the majority of the work Steven Hettrich Studios does is focused on custom decora tive finishes, Hettrich is also regularly commissioned to create paintings for clients on a national scale. His paintings have even been exhibited through two solo exhibitions at iD Chicago.

for that authenticity, which is the biggest service I provide. There’s an alchemy with natural materials. The outcome isn’t exact every time, which I love. That goes back to my process. I appreciate when the material takes over a bit.”

His process is also one that’s been described as meticulously careful and deliberate, an explora tion of color and texture in rich surfaces of a tactile and organic nature. Hettrich’s perceptive eye and passion for balance define his artistic practice.Take, for example, a gold leaf and casein mural Hettrich created for the dining room of a private residence. His team gilded the walls of the room, then painted floral artwork and added handpainted ceramic floral elements.

Both a consultant and a hands-on artist, Hettrich has become known for his meticulous attention to detail and devotion to craftsmanship.

He’s also been seeing increased interest in plaster—a material Hettrich has been working with for almost 18 years—especially in high-end residential projects. At the Bellemore restaurant in Chicago, Hettrich created a patterned plaster wall installation with layers of smooth-troweled lime plaster in two tones. In a private residence, Hettrich layered tinted plaster and limewash to

For this past spring’s Adler on the Park Show case House, Hettrich created a custom screen with simple yet beautiful materials—oiled plaster over wood panels—for the foyer in collaboration with Studio Gild. The piece is now for sale at furnishings shop South Loop Loft, which will host a show of Hettrich’s paintings and screens later this fall.

His artistic aesthetic has evolved in recent years. What used to be a form of what he defines as “lyrical abstractionism” is now one that’s broad er and looser with a focus on materiality versus illustration. He primarily paints with oil, building manipulated compositions through subtle shifts of color and focus. They’re layered in such a way that highlights the materiality of the paint.

NEWS 10 | SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 24 | SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 25 2022 THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

“Not everyone can afford to plaster their home or wants to devote space to a mural,” says Hettrich. “I love the idea of more functional artwork, in every sense. I love sculpture and ceramics. They’re functional but still beautiful. Screens are a foray into that, and I’ve been seeing more demand for it.”

For Hotel Kansas City, Hettrich honored the frontier roots of the city by creating a mural with scenes based on famed local artist Thomas Hart Benton, who was at the forefront of the Region alist art movement. In the lobby and lounge, Hettrich papered the 18-foot walls with natural craft paper and then applied an ombré wall treat ment with a matte finish casein paint.

Speaking of, Hettrich has been receiving more commissions recently than ever before. He’s now focused on bridging the work Steven Hettrich Studios does in interiors with his fine artwork. One such way is by creating screens, or room dividers. Hettrich is currently working on a mural set on seven-foot-tall panels.

variety of projects we take on, it requires flexibility and versatility. You have to be willing to fail, adapt, and learn new things.”

“I’m generally pretty gestural and loose,” says Hettrich. “I use fine paint brushes with small tips for my interiors and mural work but, with my paintings, I grab the big brush, or a squeegee, or even nothing at all. I’ll use a wipe with a cloth. It’s intentional but very free.”

“Boder, who was European himself, went to Europe and recorded the first ever testimonies of Holocaust survivors. He would also ask people to sing, so these are some of the earliest known recordings of child survivors of the Holocaust and they’re singing songs that have been taught to them in this orphanage,” says Weininger. “The songs were taught in Hebrew as preparation for moving the children to the new state of Israel.

“I think for our audiences, it will be a really interesting exhibition. We’ve never had an exhi bition that specifically looks at this time period, at the post-war period,” says Arielle Weininger, Chief Curator of Collections & Exhibitions at the museum. “It’s about the very complex history of how to rebuild Europe, how to have new elections, how to rebuild democracies after many, many years of fascism.”

The exhibit was initially intended to be a more comprehensive display of Chim’s work that was first shown at an exhibit in 2013 at the Interna tional Center of Photography in New York titled, We Went Back: Photographs from Europe 1933 to 1956 by Chim. But the COVID-19 pandemic erased those original plans and forced Wieninger and her colleagues to pivot.

The 51 photographs from Chim’s post-war work included in the exhibit are not archived photos but larger prints made from digital copies, giving the viewer an almost “being there” sense of connection with the photograph’s subjects.

The exhibit also includes a video display of 100 color photographs that are part of a collec tion of 800 photographs discovered in 2012 in a family home. A video that was shot in 1947 by Moses Leavitt, an executive at the time with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), is also part of the exhibit.

David “Chim” Seymour was one of the most accomplished photojournalists of the 20th Century, which may come as a surprise to many who haven’t heard of him. Chim—named Dawid Szynim at birth—was born in 1911 into a family of Hebrew and Yiddish Publishers in Warsaw and got his start as a photographer taking pic tures for magazines in Paris.

He left Paris in 1936 to cover the Spanish CivilUponWar.his return, his prospects as a Jew and a foreigner were severely diminished due to the increasing influence of the Nazi regime, so he escaped to New York in 1939. In 1942 he joined the Army, using his photography experience and ability to speak six languages to qualify as photo interpreter during World War II.

“Chim’s most famous photograph is the portrait of Tereska. It’s of a young girl with a very disturbed look on her face and she has this blackboard behind her with scribbles on it,” Weininger says. “She was at a school/hospital for disturbed children and was asked to draw a picture of home, and that’s what Tereska draws. Her home had in fact been bombed during the German bombing of Warsaw and she was hit with shrapnel which damaged her brain. You can

childhood and the death of his family during the Holocaust.“Withthe birth of the new state of Israel, Chim was very interested in connecting to the state of Israel. From 1951 through the rest of his life, he made annual trips to Israel to document the building of the state,” says Weininger. “Going back to his roots as a war photographer, he went down to the Suez crisis and unfortunately two days after the cease fire he was in a Jeep that was targeted, and he and a reporter he was with died in The1956.”UNESCO assignment covering the lives of children in Europe serves as the heartbeat of the new exhibit. The photographs are both haunting and life-affirming and reflect the efforts of the global Jewish community to help children heal from the effects of the war.

see the disturbance in her.”

“It’s difficult to imagine what these children might’ve gone through. Looking at the ages of them, none of them would’ve known life without war,” says Weininger. “It’s incredible to see them being taken care of.”

York.“It covers work that Chim did post-World War II, including the rebuilding of Europe, postwar elections in Germany and Italy, and how these countries were being rebuilt in part with assistance from the Marshall Plan,” Weininger says. “Chim was then hired by UNESCO to do a major story on the children of Europe, the 12 million orphans who were left after the war. He traveled to five different countries to cover that story, which became what Chim is most wellknown for.”

“When you see the images of these children and you hear their voices it pairs very well with Chim’s work but also brings the visitor back in time to think about the effects of the war on children and what survival must have meant.”

"Chim: Between Destruction and Resurrection," will run from now through February 4 at the Il linois Holocaust Museum & Education Center in Skokie. For more information and to reserve tickets, visit ilholocaustmuseum.org.

of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, will speak about consumer privacy and corporate surveillance.“Everyone’s awareness could improve because privacy in the digital age is really difficult to follow and trace,” Lemke says. “If you look at public surveys, it turns out that elderly people are really bad at protecting their privacy because they don't always know what they're doing, and young people are really bad at it because they’ve grown up in it.”

PROGRAM EXPLORES THE COMPLEX ISSUE

This fall, Lake Forest College for the first time is offering students a Minor in Public Policy, and to kick it off the college is hosting a series of lectures on internet privacy.

For Lake Forest College students, the four lectures will be followed up by a public policy analysis challenge in the spring semester which will also be focused on privacy and the Internet. Students will be able to use what they've learned in the lecture series.

college wants to also engage with the North Shore community because the issue is one of importance to everyone. The lecture series will ask such questions as, What is privacy? How do governments respond to things like user agree ments, or QR codes, or text messages saying, “Download this app for a coupon?”

of the Surveillance Oversight Project at the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC); and, Lisa Plaggemier, Executive Director of the National Cybersecurity Alliance.

BY MITCH HURST THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

While the lecture series is primarily aimed at students, Lemke makes the point that the

One of the lecturers, Ireland-based John Ne alon and an expert in data protection, will speak about privacy practices in Europe that are not in place in the U.S. The idea is to get a conversa tion started that can help people understand that the information they provide online can be veryOthervulnerable.lecturers include Rebecca Richards, the Civil Liberties and Privacy Officer at the National Security Agency, who will speak in November about cyber-security at the national level; Fred Cate of Indiana University will ad dress privacy and consent in the digital age; and, Alan Butler, Executive Director and President

“We are telling our students to find issues that concern them and write persuasive white papers that provide an argument that might lead to advocacy,” Lemke says. “They'll be doing an analysis under the umbrella privacy and the Internet with a 15-to-25-page white paper.”

“Most people don't think anything of that, so we wanted to bring people in that can talk about why you should really look at that and question what companies or third parties can do with that information,” says Public Policy Professor Christine Walker. “We found in the policy area that the U.S. doesn't have a national policy, and we're an exception.”

The challenge will be judged by a diverse slate of national experts, including Sam Skinner, former Chief of Staff for George H.W. Bush; Katitza Rodriguez, Policy Director for Global Privacy at the Electronic Frontier Foundation; Jeremy Scott, Senior Counsel and Director

“Our goal is by having these public lectures where we are inviting the community is literally to increase the awareness of the issue and maybe that will lead to better regulation and better laws down the road,” Lemke says.

“We gave a lot of thought to the issues that would be meaningful and relevant to not only our students, but the community, and we certainly know that as technology has evolved and usage has been adopted that the issue of privacy and technology affects everyone,” says Rob Lemke, Morton Professor of Public Policy and Professor of Economics at Lake Forest Col lege. “It crosses generations, but it affects each generation differently. We thought we would put our effort and resources toward diving into that issue throughout the school year.”

The lecture series, open to the public, features four experts who will offer their perspectives on various aspects of how emerging technologies threatens individual privacy, beginning Sep tember 27 and going through early December. Members of the community are welcome to participate either in-person or online.

from the cooked chicken carcasses, and chop into bite-sized pieces. Set aside. (Note: I only add the thigh meat to the finished soup, because it retains better flavor and texture than the chicken breasts, after its long simmer in the stock.) Reserve remainder of chicken (and if you like, the longcooked vegetables) for another use. Once the fat has congealed on the refrigerated stock, remove the fat and either reserve (if you have other recipes that call for chicken fat) or, discard.

NORTH SHORE FOODIE

Stock:

• 1 rib fresh celery, diced

• Two, fresh, small chickens, rinsed

Two large carrots, peeled and cut into large chunks

• 1/2 package German egg noodles, prepared according to package instructions

BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Place chickens in a large heavy-bot tomed soup kettle. Cover with 12 cups cool water (or a bit more if needed to cover the birds.) Add all remaining stock ingredients to the pot. Heat to a boil; immediately reduce heat to lowest setting and simmer for 3 1/2 to 4 hours. Using a large strainer, sepa rate broth from all of the solids (vegetables and chickens). Reserve solids in a large bowl to cool. Place stock in refrigerator to chill until fat has congealed over the top, overnight, or for several hours. While the stock is chilling, and when cool enough to handle, pull the chicken thigh meat

INGREDIENTS

• Three celery ribs, cleaned and cut into large chunks

• 1 teaspoon whole peppercorns

• 12 cups, or, enough water to cover the chickens in the pot

• Thigh meat from the cooked chicken stock, chopped

• Zest of 1/2 fresh lemon

A LITTLE SOMETHING TO WARM YOU UP AS THE TEMPERATURE DROPS.

• 6 cups of the finished chicken stock

• Juice of 1/2 fresh lemon

• 2 tablespoons fresh snipped parsley, minced plus lemon slices (from the remaining 1⁄2 lemon) for garnish

• 1 1⁄2 cups baby carrots, cut into rounds

For all its legendary, soul-soothing status, chicken noodle soup recipes—those rich with homemade stock, fresh vegetables, herbs, and egg noodles—are rather hard to find. This classic, homemade recipe is a labor of love that will nourish you in the mak ing, and your family, in the eating. It makes enough to serve four for one meal, with plenty of stock left over to freeze and use for another occasion.

• Two medium white onions, peeled, cored, and cut into quarters

• 1 sprig rosemary, or 1 teaspoon rose mary needles

Serve hot bowlfuls of soup with garnish of lemon slices and a sprinkling of parsley.

Chicken Noodle Soup (Serves 4):

Chicken Noodle Soup:

Reduce heat to medium-low and add carrot, celery, leek, and parsley. (Set aside and then freeze the remaining chicken stock.) Allow the 6 cups of chicken stock to simmer until the stock has reduced by about 1 cup and the vegetables are tender. While stock is reducing, cook egg noodles in water according to package instructions; drain. Add the diced chicken thigh meat and the prepared egg noodles to the soup. Season to taste with salt and freshly cracked pepper. Stir in finely grated zest of 1/2 lemon and the juice of 1/2 fresh lemon.

Steven took a class taught by Rose in Rose’s final year at Juilliard. Among Rose’s other famous pupils were Yo-Yo Ma, Lynn Harrell, and Ronald Leonard.

It’s your turn, Steven Honigberg.

The Pilgrim Chamber Play ers did something special for Carol Honigberg last month at Northmoor Country Club, located about a 3-wood drive’s distance from where she lives in Highland Park. They honored her devotion at a Summer Music Benefit for having served 25 years as the founding artistic director of the Pilgrim Chamber Players.Longtime Pilgrim Chamber Players President James Stone also was feted before an audience of about 100.

“I hope to continue the legacy my mother started,” says Steven, whose daughter Lily, a Californian, performed Irish fiddle music with Katie Gennen at the Summer Music Benefit.ThePilgrim Chamber Players’ home venue is the Highland Park Commu nity House. Most of the musicians hail from either Chicago or a surround ing town. COVID-19 temporarily silenced the local gem, and both Carol and Steve noticed chamber music lov ers appreciated the Players’ offerings— masterpieces, really—more than ever when the concerts (five per year) returned recently.

Mr. and Mrs. Honigberg moved to High land Park in 1960. Their other three children are Janice, Bob, and Diane. Steven, third oldest, attended Highland Park High School for three years and earned his GED in another state.

“What I also remember about those nights was the seriousness with which she played, as well as her sense of purpose. My mom was a doer.”

The Pilgrim Chamber Players are in good hands with Steven Honigberg, only the second artistic director since 1997.

But don’t think for a nanosecond that the new gig will take time away from his commit ment to honing his craft as a cellist.

Carol’s favorite pianist is the late Artur Rubinstein, a Polish-American musician who’s considered one of the greatest pianists of all time, according to Limelight Magazine. No body, many claimed, could interpret Chopin as well as Rubinstein could.

Who wouldn’t want the opportunity to escape the chaos of now for 90 minutes to experience something soothing, something moving, something transformative?

Carol and Joel, fluent in French, lived in Paris for a year. In the City of Light, once a week, Carol sharpened her burgeoning talent at the fingertips of Marguerite Marie-Charlotte Long, a French pianist, pedagogue, lecturer, and an ambassador of French music.

Mom accompanied her son to the cellist’s audition there in 1979 and did more than a few double takes after she’d entered the waiting room.“Ilooked around the room and I think I saw at least one famous musician in every corner,” Carol Honigberg says.

After his Juilliard School training (19791984), Steven joined the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., at the age of 22. He served as chamber series director at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum from 1994-2002 and later spent five years writing his first book, Leonard Rose: America’s Golden Age and Its First Cellist (published by Beckham Publications, 2010).
