HIGHLAND PARK NATIVE MELISSA CARTER TAKES THE WORLD OF VINTAGE BY STORM. BY ALLISON DUNCAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Before even visiting New York, fashion entrepreneur Melissa Carter understood she would one day live there. “Growing up I knew I was different and that I’d thrive in the big city,” explains Carter. Originally from Highland Park, Carter grew up thrifting with her mother and wanted to be in the epicenter of the fashion industry. So, after obtaining her degree in journalism from Clark Atlanta University, she packed her bags and headed North for jobs “every girl would kill for.” Carter arrived with just what she could fit in her red two-door Honda Civic, working stints in modeling, styling, and even eventually running her own vintage showroom in Williamsburg “when it was a little sketchy and not at all cool,” she says. After finding out she was pregnant with son Devin, Carter decided to make the jump to corporate life. “I learned I was going to be a mom and felt scared about living as an independent contractor in the most expensive city in the world.” She helped open the Guess flagship on 5th Avenue, then pivoted to Saks Fifth Avenue, where she styled both celebrities and well-known fashion stylists as a personal shopper in the contemporary department. Later she moved to recognizable brands like Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors, and Coach. “I had collected vintage Coach bags,” says Carter. “Being able to explore the Coach Continued on PG 11

Ross and Nancy Friedman don’t just think about their late son, Gregory Paul Friedman, every day. “I think about him every minute,” Ross says. “Every second,” Nancy insists. Time will never heal the Lake Forest couple’s grief, after Greg, 27, died a week after taking a seemingly adulterated dose of the drug Ecstasy (MDMA)/Molly that was provided by a childhood friend at a California concert in 2017. But the Friedmans—a pair of Highland Park High School graduates— and tireless GPF Foundation volunteers and supporters have devoted countless hours to work toward a future where the public and the medical community have the knowledge needed to combat the risks of recreational drugs. “It’s modern-day Russian Roulette,” Nancy Friedman says of the hidden dangers

Gregory Paul Friedman, shown in the photos above, died at age 27 one week after using a recreational drug at a concert. His parents, Ross and Nancy Friedman (shown right), remember him and raise awareness about the issue with a nonprofit foundation and fundraiser created in his name.

linked to contaminated drugs that can be bought online and delivered to homes. “Back-room chemists are producing and providing these drugs,” Ross Friedman says, adding Greg—who never had suffered from anxiety or depression, or had suicidal thoughts—informed peers and his doctor that he felt like he was “living in a parallel universe with a portal to hell” a few days before his death. A coroner ruled Greg’s death accidental because of circumstances. “Our son,” Ross says, “was suffering detrimental effects from the drug, culminat-

ing with a psychotic break one week later.” Some 1,200 people attended a ceremony to honor Greg Friedman at Lake Forest High School, where he was a star football player, having amassed 1,700 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns for the Scouts’ sophomore squad. LFHS varsity football coach Chuck Spagnoli and his staff entered the main gymnasium, site of the ceremony, with the program’s players. Each player wore a Scouts football jersey. “Although some may have heard of Greg,

artistic, and healthy, loving life and on top of the world. You’ve heard about right-brain people and left-brain people. Well, Greg was both, but he was incredibly humble.” Shortly after the gathering, friends of the family asked Ross and Nancy to create a foundation in Greg’s name. The GPF Foundation was launched in 2018. Its mission is to save lives by supporting education, appropriate treatment, and overall awareness of the dangers related to recreational drug use. “Our focus on harm reduction educa-

tion is very different from the ‘Just Say No’ culture of the past,” Ross Friedman explains. “We’re realistic and teach young people how to keep themselves and others safe. We’re taking a two-pronged approach—educational and medical—and we’ve received tremendous support from Lake Forest College, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science and collaboration with our foundation’s medical fellows from NorthShore University HealthSystem and Cook County Hospital, among others. “Handling adverse reactions to MDMA,” he adds, “has been recognized as a blind spot in the medical community.” The Fourth Annual GPF Foundation fundraiser—“An Evening of Exploration”— promises to be an eye-opening event. It will be staged at Northmoor Country Club (820 Edgewood Road, Highland Park) on October 14, beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased for $250 per person. The keynote speaker is Dr. John M. Grunsfeld, a former NASA astronaut, a veteran of five Space Shuttle flights, a man dubbed the “Hubble (Telescope) Repairman”, and a 1976 Highland Park High School graduate. Two of his classmates? Ross and Nancy Friedman. One of Greg Friedman’s many passions was space exploration. WGN News anchor Larry Potash will emcee the event, which will include another special virtual appearance by Dan White, “Magician at the NoMad.” “It’s very difficult, because one of the drivers of the foundation was inspired by the loss of our child,” Ross Friedman says. “But we’re making inroads, saving lives. “We’re truly making a difference, and Nancy and I are heartened to continually receive extraordinary support from so many friends, volunteers, members of the community, and professionals.” To learn more and to purchase tickets, visit GPFFoundation.org. Please note that Covid safety precautions will include a requirement for all in-person attendees to be both vaccinated and wear masks in a heated, outdoor tent. Participation via live stream will be available for non-vaccinated guests or those wishing to attend virtually. The COVID-19 situation will be monitored, and updates provided. INGREDIENTS • 2 ounces gin • 3/4 ounce lemon juice • 3/4 ounce honey syrup (recipe below) • 1 large egg white • Strip of lemon peel, for garnish

Fill a coupe glass with ice and set aside to chill. Place lemon juice, gin, honey syrup, and egg white in a cocktail shaker. Cover and shake vigorously. Take a peek in the shaker: when egg white is foamy, add ice, re-cover, and give it a few more shakes. Discard ice from glass, draining it of any residual water. Strain shaker contents into the glass. Garnish with the lemon peel. FOR THE HONEY SYRUP: Place 1/2 cup honey and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Whisk gently and frequently until honey is dissolved, about 5 to 10 minutes. Set aside and allow to cool thoroughly. Store in a closed container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 weeks.

NOMAD NO MORE ITINERANT TRANSLATOR/SCRIBE SCOTT SPIRES HAS FINALLY SETTLED DOWN IN LAKE BLUFF BUT LOOKS AHEAD TO A LAUNCH (OF HIS FIRST NOVEL, ABANDON ALL HOPE). BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

Ever met a man who was born in India, attended Lake Forest Academy, met his future wife in Russia, taught English in Eastern Europe, studied linguistics at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, wrote about the Czech Republic beer industry in the Czech Republic, and can prepare an otherworldly dish of shrimp and grits in the Midwest? Didn’t think so. Meet Scott Spires. The first line in the navigation link “About Me” on his website (swspires. weebly.com) is, “Where are you from?” His answer: “That is not an easy question for me to answer.” What’s easy to report: The nomadic Spires, a 56-year-old translator/writer/editor, and his wife, Olga, live in Lake Bluff. For now. He’d never written a novel. Until now. Spires started to pen Abandon All Hope in Prague, in 2002, and then set it aside for more than 16 years because “life intervened” and he probably had to box belongings almost as often as he brushed his teeth. “I was also stumped,” Spires admits. “I’d written character-based episodes, with no real plot. They were sketches, really, based on my work experiences.” In 2016 he entered his short story “Everest” in terrain.org’s annual fiction contest and earned runner-up honors. Some three summers later he shoveled the dust off his partial novel and developed a real plot featuring two contrasting protagonists—Eric Freeman, a cynical slacker and realist who enjoys an aimless, unfocused life while working a job he despises, and Evan Jarrett, an idealistic college dropout who styles himself a “philosopher and activist.” They come from similar backgrounds, having grown up in middleto upper-middle class suburbia. Abandon All Hope is set in 1998, in the Chicago area. It is scheduled to be published either later this month or early next month. “It’s a part-workplace, part-philosophical, part-Chicago novel, all blended into one story,” says Spires, the self-dubbed Lakefront Linguist. “I drew from my personal experiences. I typically wrote about 500 words a day after I resumed writing it. I wrote methodically. I used longer sentences, was more literary, when I described Eric. For passages involving Evan, I went with shorter, simpler, less adorned sentences.”

The novel addresses several questions at a time when the American economy was booming, including, “Are you really where you ought to be?” and, “If not, what’s your exit plan?” You might remember most of the 1990s. The decade was heavy on instability, fraud (the echo of the movie line “Greed is good,” uttered by Michael Douglas’s Gordon Gekko in Wall Street, still had legs), social isolation, and all kinds of fear, none more prevalent than unemployment. Spires’s words painted Covid-esque pictures on pages before the Covid era. But, get this: Spires finished his novel before the onset of Covid-19. “The novel contains a variety of themes,” Spires says. “To many, the 1990s were stable, prosperous. But concerns were always just under the surface, ready to surface. The fear of unemployment, the fear of a collapse, shook people.

“I had a good time writing it. My thinking, as I finished the second half of the novel, was, ‘If I don’t have a good time writing it, readers won’t have a good time reading it.” Spires’s itinerant life began early. He was, after all, the son of James, an Army officer. Argentina (for three years), New Orleans, Indiana, Kansas, Northbrook, Lincolnshire—Scott called each home. His father passed way; Scott’s mother, Jeanette, recently moved to Lake Forest. “It was rigorous, academically, at Lake Forest Academy,” Spires says. “But I enjoyed it there. The teachers were interesting and eccentric. I’ve stayed in touch with several of them. I asked one to read my novel as it reached its final stages.” Spires spent a year studying linguistics and Slavic languages at the University of Chicago, before continuing those studies at the University of Oxford and at the University of St. Andrews. He graduated from the latter in 1988, and, shortly thereafter, served as a translator for a German who set up an office in the Chicago area; the client also ran a business in the country formerly known as the Soviet Union. “I was a Russianist, focusing on linguistics,” says Spires, who started but did not finish his dissertation—“Language Mixing and Language Shift in Southern Lithuania, 1864-1920”—at Oxford. In 2005, while living in Moscow, he heard of a club that met regularly to practice speaking English. That’s where he met Olga and kicked off a courtship. They got married in 2009. Spires has a stepson, Victor. “When Covid hit it destroyed a lot of business opportunities to translate,” Spires says. “Restrictions on travel, fewer court cases, fewer business trips … all contributed to tough times for translators. But they’re coming back now, somewhat.” Spires spends his free time reading and listening to music, all kinds of music. He likes classical, rock, jazz, and world music. He also likes to travel with his wife. “I’ve become a pretty good cook,” Spires says, hinting nobody would complain a lick about his shrimp and grits, a dish he calls “a Southern thing.” “Olga and I don’t just enjoy eating at restaurants all over the country; we also love going to them to learn how to cook their entrees.” Hmm. Sounds like the start of a book’s delicious plot. Write it, Scott. Visit swspires.weebly.com for more information. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
