It’s also about terrorism, the Cold War, athletes and coaches refusing to accept Olympic silver medals in Germany, corruption, and why the squad’s team captain, guard Kenny Davis, still can’t stop thinking something was stolen from from him each time he hears The Star-Spangled Banner. attendees might have about the book (University of Nebraska Press, 2019), which he dedicated to his late parents, Phil and Nancy Sweet. “Encountering the evil of terrorism and suffering an excruciating, unjust championship loss in only a four-day span—a sad and searing way for innocence to be shorn—shaped them then and continues to influence them today,” Sweet writes of Team USA’s amateurs, who had seemingly won their country’s eighth straight gold medal in men’s basketball and then refused to accept their silver medals after the Soviets had secured the stunning triumph on a buzzer-beating basket. “The topics in the book resonate today, and I think they’ll appeal to a broad range of people, age-wise,” Sweet, in a phone interview last week, adds. “Who could forget the television coverage of the horrific events, of the massacre of 11 people? “I’m amazed that the Games continued afterward.” Sweet vividly captures the horror that USA center Tommy Burleson endured on the eve of the USA-Italy semifinal. A West German guard pressed the barrel of his gun against Burleson’s head as Burleson heard Israeli athletes walking and sobbing in a parking garage. The athletes would be among the 11 killed by the terrorists. Sweet grew up in Lake Forest and

attended Denison University, where he majored in English. He earned his journalism degree at the University of Southern California. “I love researching and interviewing and writing,” Sweet says. “I could do all of that all day, especially if it involves a topic that interests me. Think about what those U.S. players gave up in 1972. They gave up an Olympic medal. It’s a young athlete’s dream, isn’t it, to earn such a medal? But all 12 players took a stand and didn’t want to validate the outcome of the game by showing up at the ceremony to receive silver medals.” Two of the players—Davis and guard Tom Henderson—made sure none of their descendants will ever see the silver prize. It says so in their wills. Sweet traveled to Kentucky to interview Davis. The day of the prearranged gettogether happened to be the day of the funeral of Davis’s father, Clyde. Sweet offered to conduct the interview some other time. A grieving Kenny Davis chose to stick with the original plan. He’d heard the national anthem at the funeral, because his father was a veteran. The song, once again, transported Davis back to 1972, which should have been a joyful reminiscence. “I never hear a national anthem being played without thinking that something was taken away from us,” Davis tells Sweet. “I couldn’t imagine the cold chills that would have run down my neck on the podium as they played the anthem and the flag was raised. With many private schools well into their second consecutive year of in-person learning, and with school activities such as sports teams and clubs restored, school administrators tell The North Shore Weekend

they are confident students are back on track with their learning. Niall Fagan. Headmaster at Northridge Prep in Niles says students are enthusiastic about the environment at school being close to what it was prior to the pandemic. “We’re working with a coach for our teachers for professional development and continuous growth and his first time at

the school he was remarking about how he could tell the boys have a lot of energy,” Fagan says. “At the same time, when they come into the classroom, they're primed to learn.” Last year, Northridge Prep provided a Zoom option for students who wanted to learn remotely or who had to quarantine due exposure to the COVID-19 virus,

which caused some students to fall behind. However, this year no Zoom option is being offered and the students are back on track. “We saw that most students that were out for more than a week struggled. Some do well on Zoom but most do not,” Fagan Continued on PG 20

says. “We do have a remote learning plan and process in place for students who have to quarantine, but it's to participate in the normal class remotely.” Too much reliance on technology bumps up against Northridge Prep’s educational philosophy. Students don’t use laptops in class but instead take hand-written notes—a practice that Fagan says helps them better understand what they’re learning and retain knowledge. ONE-ON-ONE TEACHING Fusion Academy, with campuses in Evanston and Lake Forest, was well-positioned to handle disruptions to the classroom due to its unique teaching model. The school provides one-on-one teaching both in person and remote, so the technology infrastructure was already in place when it had to close in spring of 2020. Chrissy Dale, Head of School at Fusion’s Evanston location, says the model has served its students well during these past few years of disruption and uncertainty. “Our teachers were able to very closely

well. “We went on our first field trip two weeks ago to Chinatown and the students were just thrilled to have that opportunity to get back out and do enrichment learning in the community,” Dale says. “It was lovely.” Alex Sheridan, Director of Enrollment, Marketing, and Financial Aid at Lake Forest Country Day School in Lake Forest, says the mood on campus among students has been positive. “In terms of the mood, in terms of the temperature, things are really great,” Sheridan says. “We were open for a full year of in-person learning last year so I think that's given us a lot of confidence that we could return again this year and not have a steep learning curve.” Sheridan says that with athletic teams in place again and other opportunities for students to socialize, it feels a lot more like a normal school year. “Students are being able to participate in activities and programs that they weren't able to do last year, so there's more to the experience which I think is really exciting for everybody,” he says. “It feels very familiar

masks, they can do group work. It’s familiar and I think the teachers, students and parents are appreciating getting back to some level of normality.” Webb says the students are also doing well socially and emotionally. “They come into the building bouncing and joyful and ready to learn and happy to see their friends,” she says. “Last year, we had no volunteers in the building whatsoever and this year we're kind of bringing things back slowly. We’re going to have a homecoming pep rally outdoors and we're going to try and have a Halloween party. We're getting there.” Kathy Thompson, Assistant Principal at School of St. Mary in Lake Forest says that while the school can’t publish data on test scores due to privacy, she likes what she is

seeing from her students. “When we transitioned virtually last March (of 2020), we collected some data points so that we could measure to ensure that we were able to transition as seamlessly as we were able,” Thompson says. “When we came back to the school year last August, we looked at the academic achievement of our current students and we did not have any of those academic gaps.” School of St. Mary experienced an influx of new students this year who were in remote learning situations all last year and that has presented some challenges for the school to help them catch up. “We have a huge percentage of new students in both buildings this year and some Continued on PG 22

transition into the same academic setting with a Zoom meeting. They already had that rapport with students and know them very well,” Dale says. “They were even able to support that social and emotional piece because when they logged on, they could tell how the students were functioning that day.” One of the features of Fusion Academy is its Homework Café, a physical space where students gather to do homework, so they don’t take work home. The café was difficult to replicate remotely, and Dale says she saw a drop off in participation, but with students back in school it’s thriving once again. One thing that was missed last year were field trips, but those are up and running as

PLAYING CATCH UP ACADEMIC APPROACH FOUNDER AND CEO MATTHEW PIETRAFETTA SAYS NEW DATA IS STARTING TO PROVIDE A PICTURE OF HOW REMOTE LEARNING IMPACTED THE ACADEMIC PROGRESS OF ELEMENTARY AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. BY MITCH HURST THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Last time The North Shore Weekend caught up with Matthew Pietrafetta, CEO of Academic Approach, he said we wouldn’t know how much students were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic until another round of standardized testing was complete. Results from testing are starting to trickle in and they show that students who were put in the position of having to learn remotely or who faced other constraints now must meet the challenges of catching up. “There were a lot of predictions that students could lose as much as 50 percent learning, especially in math, compared to an average school year,” Pietrafetta says. “Now the data we’re seeing show that the impact is significant but far less than the direst predictions suggested.” A recent report from ACT, the college

entrance exam maker, shows a drop in scores in all subjects among juniors and seniors. ACT equates this to a drop of three months of academic learning in the classroom.

H owe ve r, t h i s d a t a come from students who were able to test in person for the 2020-2021 school year. “The students missing f rom this testing data set, in many cases, are from underserved areas where they lacked access to in-person schooling and testing,” he says. “We still don’t have 100 percent year-over-year testing data across all the different demographics to assess and answer the question of how much learning loss occurred.” Pietrafetta prefers to view the latest numbers as indicative of a learning delay rather than as a loss. It is something that can absolutely be overcome with concerted effort. It is times like these when students have faced learning disruptions that the company’s services are vital. In addition to working with families, Academic Approach

us who work in education, those of us who are parents—is that for the past year and a half our students haven’t been as rigorously engaged in academic work as we have seen in the past and as we want them to be,” says Pietrafetta. “We all got a window into what school looked like, and it just wasn’t the same.” Pietrafetta says some of the biggest delays brought on by the pandemic are in the younger grades, simply because the younger the student, the more likely the student is to lack both the foundational skills and academic behaviors to compensate for disrupted learning. “It really does depend upon the data available to the school. If the school hasn’t been testing and comparing year-over-year trends, then you don’t know what you don’t know,” Pietrafetta says. “What you don’t know can hurt you because it’s difficult to know the exact impact on any particular subject or grade level without the data and its analysis.” While he focuses on how students were impacted academically the last two years, Pietrafetta acknowledges that understanding how they were impacted socially and emotionally is as or more important. “The first priority was and remains the social and emotional, making sure our children are safe physically as they're dealing with the pandemic and maintaining their social and emotional health,” he says. “There are rever-

berating effects of depression and trauma that educators are focused on.” Pietrafetta recently participated in a panel discussion about the importance of social and emotional health and how educators and parents can help students grow both emotionally and academically. “The conversation covered many important topics relevant to social and emotional learning (SEL) and how parents can support the development of their children’s SEL skills,” Pietrafetta says. “From promoting self-management skills to working with teachers to encourage students’ self-advocacy, the topics are relevant to current education research and include practical advice for parents to apply with children across a range of ages.” Pietrafetta talked about how to encourage “active learners” by focusing on their passions and helping them to plan and prepare to learn. “Growth-minded learners,” who understand that learning is a process, can be encouraged through positive reinforcement to continually improve. “In the end, we want to cultivate children/ students who are active, resilient problemsolvers in school and in life,” Pietrafetta says. “As parents and educators, we all are actively engaged in this classroom.” For more information, visit academicapproach.com or call 888-394-5060. The porthole depicted near the top of the vibrant mural inside the Sunset Foods entrance in Lake Forest doesn’t wink. But if it did, it would be so Sandie Bacon, the mural’s creator. “I love the water,” says the Lake Bluff artist and art teacher, who had swum laps at a pool in Waukegan earlier in the day. “I love it as a symbol. My favorite place near water is Monterey Beach in California. It’s where you get to see otters and lots of rocks. “I’ve always enjoyed viewing the flow of water, the rhythm of waves.” Interested in being doused with Bacon’s fathomless talent and information on her drawing and painting techniques—without having to fish for a life preserver? Then simply show up at Art Pop in Lake Forest (724 North Western Avenue) on October 23, 1-3 p.m. Bacon—co-president of Artists on the Bluff—was tapped to be the first artist to exhibit their work in a series of Artist-inResidence presentations. A joint venture between Artists on the Bluff, Deerpath Art League, and the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Artisan Guild, Pop Art is a volunteer, nonprofit art gallery installed in un-leased spaces in the center of downtown Lake Forest. All kinds of art—paintings, photography, jewelry, millinery, and other forms— brightened the days of passersby during the darkest days of the pandemic in 2020. Each Artist-in-Residence event is free, and at the spotlight-on-Bacon kickoff you’ll also learn all about the classically trained, versatile artist who grew up in Winnetka and was drawn to drawing at the age of 6. She took middle school classes taught by Art Institute of Chicago instructors and honed her craft in New Trier West High School and Winnetka Community

House art classes. “Community art, such as a mural, often encourages the public to talk about art, and it sometimes reminds the local residents of the qualities that make their community special or distinctive,” says Bacon, who, while researching Libertyville before creating a mural for that suburb’s Sunset Foods (1451 East Peterson Road), discovered that future Hollywood

legend Marlon Brando had hopped on his motorcycle as a teenager one day and burned rubber in a Libertyville High School hallway. A Bacon mural can also be appreciated at the Sunset Foods in Highland Park (1812 Green Bay Road). Bacon has completed more than 40 community art projects, including several during her 12 years in New York City. Her “regular paintings”—Bacon’s humble description for striking works that are far from “regular”—have appeared at national and international shows and galleries since around 2005. A regional instructional resource for Golden Paint, the leading supplier of acrylic paint and other art supplies, Bacon has taught at the Evanston Art Center and at too-many-to-count other venues in the Midwest. In New York she was involved with LEAP (Learning through an Expanded Arts Program), which promotes access and equity for New York City students underserved in the arts. “Featuring animals has been a big part of my artwork,” says Bacon, a former Bronx Zoo tour guide. “I’ve also used my art to create awareness about the changes our environment is undergoing.” Bacon holds a BA in fine arts from the University of Redlands in California and earned her MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art (painting). Her most influential art professor, the late John Petri Brownfield, was a longtime faculty member (19652004) at the University of Redlands. He died in 2020 at age 79. Brownfield was born in Chicago and graduated from Taft High School in 1958. “He made art personal,” Bacon says. “His art and his teaching had quite an impact on me.”

James Malcolm, a University of Redlands biology professor, told Redlands Community News that Brownfield was a gifted figurative artist. “He did wonderful portraits,” Malcolm added. “He was continuously inventive. He tried every medium, from fresco to gesso to even body molding. He had a huge sense of fun, with many jokes in his works, like his selfportrait in the form of a hooting chimpanzee.” Bacon lived on a boat off the Eastern Seaboard for years. On land her murals adorned the walls inside mansions in Newport, Rhode Island. Remember the imaginative, colorful ceramic dogs that Lake Bluff displayed publicly—or “officially unleashed,” in the delightful words of a clever committee member—to commemorate the village’s 125th anniversary in 2020? Bacon served as an invaluable adviser for the project. But the Bacon project that will make you stop, or your grocery cart’s wheels halt, for years and years is that 2018 mural inside Sunset Foods in Lake Forest. Its colors pop, pop, pop. The drawing of two trios of carrots, flanking a huge depiction of a tomato slice, highlights the bottom of the mural. Images of to-die-for desserts take up most of the lower left corner. Drink it in.
