“HE SAVED MY LIFE” Peripheral Neuropathy is the pain, discomfort and numbness caused by nerve damage of the peripheral nervous system. Linda explained that daily tasks like opening doors and using the bathroom were overwhelmingly painful. “How can you live for the next 30 years when you don’t even want to get out of bed to do simple things?”

Highland Park resident Linda S. had been experiencing the painful side effects of Peripheral Neuropathy, “my feet and legs were extremely painful and my doctor told me there was nothing they could do. That I would have to take Gabapentin for the rest of my life.”

Dr. Su has been helping the senior community for over 10 years using innovative integrative medicine. Specializing in chronic pain cases, specifically those that have been deemed ‘hopeless’ or ‘untreatable’, he consistently generates unparalleled results. Now Linda and her sister operate a successful dog walking business, sometimes covering up to 5 miles a day.

Linda hasn’t worn socks in five years “It’s life altering. As far as I’m concerned, Dr. and was wearing shoes two sizes too Su saved my life!” big so that nothing would ‘touch’ her Then she met Dr. Su. Dr. Su has been helping the senior feet. She was experiencing the burning, community for over 10 years using numbness, tingling, and sharp pains innovative integrative medicine. that those suffering from neuropathy often describe. Specializing in chronic pain cases, specifically those that “The way that I would describe it, it’s equivalent have been deemed ‘hopeless’ or ‘untreatable’, he consisto walking on glass.” tently generates unparalleled results. Unfortunately Linda’s story is all too familiar for the over 3 million people suffering from Peripheral Neuropathy. If you are unfortunate enough to be facing the same disheartening prognosis, you’re not sleeping at night because of the burning in your feet. You have difficulty walking, shopping, or doing any activity for more than 30 minutes because of the pain. You’re struggling with balance and living in fear that you might fall. Your doctor told you to ‘just live with the pain’ and you’re taking medications that aren’t working or have terrible side effects. Fortunately, four months ago Linda read an article about a new type of clinic in Northfield that works with difficult to treat cases such as Peripheral Neuropathy sufferers, without invasive surgeries and medications. Dr. Kuan Su, DACM, L.Ac., Dipl.OM founder of Acupuncture North Clinic is using the time-tested science of Acupuncture and technology originally developed by NASA that assists in increasing the blood flow and expediting recovery and healing to treat this debilitating disease.

“Now when I go to bed at night I don’t have those shooting pains. I don’t have that burning sensation. I don’t have pain coming up my legs,” Linda enthusiastically describes life after receiving treatment with Dr. Su. “I can wear socks and shoes!”

What was once a missing link in senior healthcare is now easily accessible to the residents of Northfield and the surrounding Northshore area. If you missed too many tee times because of pain or you’ve passed on too many games of pickleball because you’re afraid of falling, it is time to call Kuan at Acupuncture North Clinic. Dr. Su is now accepting a limited number of new patients. In an effort to protect his patients, both current and future, he has made the difficult decision to limit the number of patients seen in his clinic. Only 7 new neuropathy patients will be accepted before the end of December 2023. It’s time you let your golden years BE GOLDEN!

THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

DEAR CLIENTS AND FRIENDS, As we approach the holidays, this has always been a time of reflection for me. I look back at the last year and I think of ways that I can improve myself both personally and professionally. During this reflection I am reminded of all of you and how blessed we are to have you as our clients. I don’t always have the opportunity to personally say thank you. I would like to take this moment to express my most sincere appreciation and gratitude for placing your confidence in the salon, and me for all of your beauty needs. I also want to thank my amazing staff for all of their hard work and dedication because without them this journey would not be possible. I wish you the happiest of holidays, filled with laughter, light, love, health and happiness.

The Woman’s Board of Northwestern Memorial Hospital recently celebrated 125 years of incredible, leading-edge philanthropic work for Northwestern Memorial Hospital. More than 200 guests attended the event, which featured cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and dancing. Thanks in large part to lead sponsors Joan and Charles Moore and the generous support of Laura and Tony Davis and Arlene Lo, the event raised nearly $200,000. These funds will benefit programs and critical patient care initiatives supported by The Woman’s Board, including the most recent $4.6 million pledge to fund comprehensive reproductive care across a woman’s lifetime. wbnorthwestern.org

Natural elements contrast with fine China

THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

When it comes to decorating for the holidays, surround yourself with what makes you happy. Bringing children into holiday traditions young and taking them through the design process make it more fun to celebrate holidays. It’s not just about buying the perfect décor or pumpkins from the store, it’s about taking the kids with you to a local farm, selecting an imperfect assortment together, and learning about where they come from… we mix colors, sizes, shapes. I am teaching them to have fun with scale and to be bold with their choices! It’s all about the experience and building family traditions.

Natural elements contrast with fine China

SIGNATURE TABLE I mix and match my fine China patterns from my wedding and collections passed down through generations for a fun, spontaneous vibe. Choose patterns that complement one another. Referencing the history of the pieces can make for great conversation. PATTERN MIXING Take risks and break the rules. This especially applies to fine China. If you don’t have enough of a particular place setting to accommodate the full guest list, mix and match China patterns and glassware for a look that is artful and eclectic. The soulful juxtaposition of metallic and winter whites is my go-to holiday palette. Tie it all together with linens and florals. Pattern mixing captures a sense of easy elegance and infuses even the most refined setting with an effortlessly chic spirit, keeping the mood fun and spontaneous.

After three cross-country moves, KRISTI JOSLEYN’s family found a new home in Glencoe. Originally from Indianapolis, Josleyn followed a long line of family members to Purdue University to study retail management. She began a career as an apparel buyer for Lids. This position led to lasting memories on the field at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium (Ole Miss), Sun Devil Stadium (Arizona State), and Ohio Stadium (the “Shoe”). A highlight was the team celebration for Ohio State’s first College Football Playoff national championship. After a move to San Francisco, she focused on the San Francisco Giants and worked out of AT&T Park. Following her move to Glencoe, Josleyn became a stay-at-home mom to her four daughters. She supports her new community by volunteering with Glencoe Junior Kindergarten—evolving from room parent to her current role as board co-president. Here is how this sporty multitasker stays current in a busy world.

#ON MY NIGHTSTAND

Today, it’s Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin. I’m only halfway through it but am loving it. Yesterday, it was Taylor Jenkins Reid’s Daisy Jones & The Six, which as a lover of all music genres, I thoroughly enjoyed. In our house, there is always something playing in the background via my eclectic playlist ranging from show tunes to rock to hip hop, etc. So, it’s no surprise, that I quickly fell in love with this book loosely based on Fleetwood Mac.

#ON MY MOBILE

The social media accounts I follow are almost strictly to satisfy my guilty pleasure of celebrity gossip and reality television. When I want the most upto-date stories, I check out @deuxmoi or @enews. I’m also heavily invested in all things Bravo (Tom Sandoval!), so I keep up with @heathermcdonald and Juicy Scoop, or @bravohistorian. Once I’ve gotten my fill, I check out accounts like @reesesbookclub for my next great read or @boilerfootball and @ boilerball for my love of Purdue sports.

#IN MY EARBUDS

I have a background in musical theater and show choir, so at any given time you will likely find me listening to musicals. I think music and theater foster creativity and expression and are critical to children, so I have a strong desire to pass my love for theater on to my girls. We have started to take advantage of all Chicago offers in that regard. Some of our favorite shows include Wicked, Six, Dear Evan Hansen, and Hamilton, but I think the best moments are in the kitchen where our girls’ creative sides come out while choreographing dances and performing their favorite songs to an invisible audience. I might have some future stars on my hands!

The Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival will once again bring the magic of puppetry to the city. than eight years. The third installment of the Animalia Trilogy, “Dead As a Dodo,” will make its debut and open the festival at the Biograph’s Začek McVay Theater on January 18. The first two parts of the trilogy will also be performed as part of the festival’s program. “Wakka Wakka has been very successful with their work in New York and Norway and in Europe. They are very highly regarded, but they’ve never had the opportunity to perform all three shows,” Thomas says. “That’s special and unique in the world of puppetry, but also for Chicago. I’m very excited for that.” Also exciting, Thomas says, is the work of Hamid Rahmanian, an Iranian American visual artist who tells an epic Persian tale through the art of shadow puppetry. Thomas says it’s similar to a live cinematic experience using film projection. Rahmanian’s Song of the North will run at the Studebaker Theatre on January 19 and 20. “It’s really extraordinary, and great exposure

Blair Thomas, Founder and Artistic Director of the festival and its chief curator, says his goal each year is to showcase a diverse selection of the best and most creative puppetry from the country and throughout the world. It’s not the biggest puppetry festival in the world, but certainly one of the most culturally varied. “I approach the curation as an attempt to show the dynamic and exciting work in the world that I’m finding out there being done by puppeteers. NORTH SHORE FOODIE

BÛCHE DE NOËL (Christmas Yule Log Cake)

BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Among our family’s holiday-making traditions, filling rooms with boughs of evergreen is one of the brightest and best. As we bring armfuls of snowy branches in, there is freshness and chill, that wild citrusy conifer smell, and always, a swell of gratitude for nature’s provision. This celebratory cake, with its cute caps of meringue mushrooms, is a woodland fantasy in just that spirit. In France, la bûche de Noël harks back to Medieval times and traditions. Then, placing a log on the hearth on Christmas Eve and burning it for three days was believed to bring good luck, and good harvest. Centuries later, cakes have replaced the log, with thousands of versions baked worldwide. Like those, ours—a chocolate roll cake with vanilla mousse filling, light-chocolate buttercream and dark chocolate “bark”—conjures memories of favorite flavors from childhood. An elevated Hostess Ho-ho perhaps? Or Little Debbie Swiss Roll snack cake. We’ve included a recipe for crispy meringue mushrooms that fit the woodland motif and add a nice crunch when eaten with the cake. To streamline assembly for when you bake the cake, the mushrooms, mousse, and dark chocolate bark can be made ahead of time. The meringue needs to be made on a dry-weather day—rainy weather won’t work. And for best texture and flavor, you’ll want to refrigerate the finished cake at least an hour, and serve it very cold. Photography by Monica Kass Rogers

BÛCHE DE NOËL

Serves 8 to 10 INGREDIENTS

FOR THE MERINGUE MUSHROOMS

Note: This makes a LOT of mushrooms. You will use some to decorate the cake, and some to garnish each guest serving plate. If you like, use the extra meringue to bake a few pavlova shells for fresh fruit. • ½ cup fresh egg whites OR substitute pasteurized from the grocery refrigerated section • Pinch of salt • ¼ tsp cream of tartar • 1 cup pure cane sugar • 2 tsp unsweetened dark cocoa powder • 4 oz. melted dark chocolate

FOR THE CHOCOLATE BARK

• 8 to 10 oz. good quality dark chocolate FOR THE VANILLA MOUSSE

• 2 cups heavy whipping cream • 1/3 cup instant vanilla pudding mix FOR THE LIGHT CHOCOLATE BUTTERCREAM

• ½ cup unsalted butter, cut into cubes, softened • 1 ½ tsp vanilla paste (or substitute vanilla extract) • 2 cups confectioners’ sugar, sifted • 2 Tbsp cream, ½ and ½, or milk • 1 ½ Tbsp vegetable oil • 1 Tbsp dark cocoa powder • ½ tsp salt

LIFESTYLE & ARTS FOR THE BÛCHE DE NOËL

• 6 large eggs, yolks and white separated into two bowls • 2 tsp corn syrup • 1 ½ tsp. vanilla paste, divided (or substitute vanilla extract) • 2 Tbsp tepid water • 1 cup sugar, divided • ¼ tsp salt • ¾ cup cake flour • 1/3 cup dark cocoa powder (I use Hershey’s Special Dark) • ½ tsp baking powder • 1/3 cup vegetable oil, slightly warmed FOR SUGARED CRANBERRY AND ROSEMARY GARNISH

• 10 tiny, bright red fresh cranberries • 1 egg white, whipped • ¼ cup superfine sugar. (NOTE: To make superfine sugar from regular sugar, place in coffee grinder and pulse for five seconds.) • 8 to 10 sprigs fresh rosemary METHOD MAKE MERINGUE MUSHROOMS Place oven rack at center position. Preheat to 225 degrees. Line a large half-sheet baking sheet with parchment paper. In the bowl of a stand mixer, whip egg whites until they softly peak. Continue whipping as you add small amounts of the sugar, whipping between addition until meringue is glossy and holds firm peaks. Fill a round-tipped pastry bag (or, a large heavy plastic bag from which you’ve trimmed a corner) with meringue. To make the mushroom caps: Squeeze out round

dollops of meringue in various sizes onto the parchment, carefully pulling the tip to the side as you finish each, to avoid creating a peak on top. For the stems, press out small amounts of meringue, pulling straight up to make a pointed top, like a gnome’s cap. Dust caps with cocoa powder. Bake for 1 hour in the 225 oven. Near the end of the baking time, melt the chocolate. To assemble: Use a pointed skewer or chopstick to poke a tiny hole in the bottom of each mushroom THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

cap. Paint with a small amount of melted chocolate. Press the pointed end of each stem into each mushroom cap. Refrigerate lightly covered with plastic wrap for 15 minutes until chocolate hardens. MAKE CHOCOLATE BARK Line a large cookie sheet (half-sheet pan) with parchment paper. Melt chocolate for 1 minute in microwave. Using an offset spatula, spread melted chocolate smoothly all over the parchment paper. Refrigerate at least ½ hour until hard set and very cold. Note: the paper and chocolate will curl up slightly as the pan

cools—this is fine.

MAKE VANILLA MOUSSE Whip 2 cups heavy whipping cream just until soft peaks begin to form. Add 1/3 cup instant vanilla pudding mix and whip a few more seconds until firm peaks form. Place in bowl; cover and refrigerate. MAKE LIGHT CHOCOLATE BUTTERCREAM In the bowl of a stand mixer, with paddle

attachment, whip butter until fluffy. Slowly beat in confectioners’ sugar and vanilla paste. Continue beating and add cream. Mix vegetable oil and cocoa power to a smooth liquid and whip this and salt into frosting until smooth, fluffy, and no streaks remain. MAKE SUGARED CRANBERRY AND ROSEMARY GARNISH Wash and dry fresh cranberries. Dip one side of each cranberry in egg white. Dip in superfine sugar. Set aside to dry for 30 minutes. Trim rosemary to make attractive sprigs. MAKE BÛCHE DE NOËL Place oven rack at center position. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cover a large, rimmed baking sheet (half sheet pan) with parchment paper, leaving an edge of paper extending above the rim of the pan, all the way around, and tucking/creasing paper at corners to fit down into the pan. Set aside. Place the metal bowl of a stand mixer in sink and fill with hot water until bowl is warm. Dry bowl. Place warmed bowl in stand mixer fitted with whisk attachment and fill bowl with egg yolks, corn syrup, vanilla, water, ½ cup of the sugar and salt. Whip mixture on high speed until pale yellow and fluffy. Scrape mixture into a large separate bowl and set aside. Wash mixer bowl and place back in stand mixer. Add egg whites to empty mixer bowl and whip on high speed until soft peaks form. Continue whipping as you slowly add remaining ½ cup of sugar until stiff glossy peaks form into a meringue. Add ½ of the meringue mixture to the reserved egg yolk mixer and using a gentle over and under motion, fold together until no white streaks remain. In another bowl, sift flour, cocoa powder, and baking powder together. In three parts, slowly add dry ingredients into the yolk/meringue mixture, using the same gentle folding motion with each addition, folding

until completely incorporated. Microwave oil a scant 15 seconds until warm to the touch and add to the batter, folding again until incorporated. Stir in the reserved ½ portion of meringue and fold again until no streaks remain. You will have a very glossy, light batter. Pour batter into the prepared ½ sheet pan. Sharply rap filled pan on tabletop to release trapped air bubbles. Repeat action twice. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Remove cake from oven. Using the parchment overhang, lift cake from pan and rest on clean work surface. Lightly dampen a large kitchen towel. Leaving the paper adhered to the cake, roll the cake from one short end to the other to make a jelly roll shape. Wrap the rolled cake, seam-side down, in dampened kitchen towel and rest until cooled. Gently unroll cake. Spread cake with vanilla mousse, leaving the last two inches unfrosted. (As you roll the cake, some of the mousse will move down to fill this space.) Separating cake from the parchment paper as you go, roll cake from one short end to the other, to make filled roll cake. Gently lift filled cake onto serving platter. Pipe buttercream over cake, using offset spatula to smooth over all. Using a sharp knife, trim each end of the roll cake, to expose the pretty filled cake pattern at each end. Remove the chilled tray of dark chocolate from refrigerator. Working quickly, begin to break pieces of the chocolate to form strips of chocolate “bark,” placing each strip over the buttercream, until the cake is covered with ridges. If the chocolate begins to soften from the heat of your hands, refrigerate again until firm and continue. Cover cake lightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. To serve, top cake with meringue mushrooms. For individual servings, add one meringue mushroom, one sprig of rosemary, and sugared cranberry as garnish.

MAESTRO

Bradley Cooper’s biopic about Leonard Bernstein is both a masterful celebration of the iconic conductor-composer and a tribute to the art of filmmaking.

BY REX REED ILLUSTRATION BY TOM BACHTELL

RUNNING TIME: 2 HOURS, 9 MINUTES RATING: 4 stars

Maestro is the movie of the year. Amendment: not to slight the amazing Oppenheimer, make that one of the two best films of the year. But Bradley Cooper's warts-and-all biopic about volatile conductor-composer Leonard Bernstein has more passion, tenderness, and heartbreaking resonance—and it's a lot more fun. Mr. Cooper, already revered as an actor of extraordinary skill, is fast becoming one of our best contemporary film directors. His recent take on A Star is Born extracted a career-changing performance from Lady Gaga (not even in the same league with George Cukor's definitive 1954 version starring Judy Garland, but impressive) and now he shows massive improvement in every creative department—acting, screenwriting, cinematography, editing, scoring—to create not only the celebration of a great man, but a great tribute to filmmaking itself. Maestro is the closest thing to perfection I've seen on the screen in a very long time. Despite the prosthetic nose he designed for himself to look more like Bernstein (that raised the hackles of some offended Jewish viewers but was publicly approved and applauded by members of

Bernstein's own family), it's a meticulously calibrated character study that personifies the conflicted traits, mannerisms, triumphs, and flaws of a musical genius who conducted his life like the movements in a symphony, paying a supreme price for the privilege--and the loving, long-suffering wife who wrote and signed the check. Admire or admonish the result, but protests are a waste of time. Every ravishing frame is the exclusive vision of Bradley Cooper. It's his film and from start to finish, he's in the catbird seat. Or, I should say, it's Carey Mulligan's film, because as Lenny's patient, devoted wife Felicia— who sacrificed her own acting career to guide, support, and honor his fame while coping with the pain and humiliation of his numerous homosexual affairs throughout their tortured marriage and the negative effect they had on her—this thrilling, inventive, brilliant, and beautiful actress is endlessly mesmerizing. From the day a dying Bruno Walter surrendered his baton and Lenny became a 25-year-old sensation conducting the New York Philharmonic to the day Felicia died of cancer, she was the primary force throughout his life and career. With radiant naturalism, Ms. Mulligan gives ballast

26 | SATURDAY DECEMBER 16 | SUNDAY DECEMBER 17 2023

to a great centerpiece. Mr. Cooper's direction and exemplary screenplay, co-authored by Josh Singer, are admirably generous in allowing her performance the space it deserves. The film leaves no stone unturned and no turn un-stoned as it investigates every turbulent chapter in the Bernstein career. You get the Broadway forays with Betty Comden and Adolph Green that produced Candide, On the Town, and West Side Story. From every angle, the director moves into Lenny's skin with blistering ease. Chain-smoking and talking like a rapidfire machine gun, conducting with a baton in one hand and a cigarette in the other, lowering his voice and speaking through his nose almost without breathing, and filling the screen with heart-stopping musical sequences from Beethoven to Mahler's 2nd Symphony to recreating those popular Young People's Concerts on Omnibus, Mr. Cooper is awesome. Vocally and physically, he literally disappears into the role. When the elements combine, you get a film as welcome and rare as a perfect Christmas morning. Maestro is a masterpiece. Looking for laughter to enhance your holiday spirit? Consider checking out former Laverne & Shirley writer Dana Olsen and others this month and next at the “Ho-Ho-Holiday Revue” at Studio5 in Evanston. BY BILL MCLEAN ILLUSTRATION BY BARRY BLITT

Well before he wrote lines for television characters Laverne and Shirley, penned jokes for Chevy Chase, and screen-wrote the movie The ’Burbs—starring Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern, and Carrie Fisher—a young Dana Olsen entertained an audience of two at home. Older sisters Virginia and Jane. “They told me I was funny,” says Olsen, a Northwestern University graduate who attended Maine South High School in Park Ridge. “I was the youngest in my family. The youngest kid always likes to act out to get attention.” Li’l Dana is now 65-year-old Mr. Olsen, but the delightful kid in him hasn’t aged a bit. The actor/film producer/screenwriter has been rehearsing at least three times a week this month for Practical Theatre’s highly anticipated “Ho-Ho-Holiday Revue,” and he can’t wait to act out professionally on Studio5’s stage in Evanston before audiences of 130. The classic variety show—think back, Baby Boomers, to SNL and the sketch comedy- and music-laden TV fare of the 1960s and early 1970s—stars Olsen, Practical Theatre Co-founder Paul Barrosse, and Barrosse’s wife, producer/actor Victoria Zielinski. They’ll be backed by The Studio5 All-Stars, a jazz quintet led by keyboard virtuoso and Studo5 Co-founder Steve Rashid. Also appearing are blues and soul vocalist Ms. Maura and stand-up comedian Emilia Barrosse, whose writing credits included HBO’s Veep and truTV’s Tacoma FD. Show dates are December 28 to 31 and January 4 to 6. Expect about 18 comedy sketches— heavy on sophisticated adult fun—and six musical numbers, Olsen estimates. “Topics will be topical,” says Olsen, who called Wilmette home before his move to Evanston. “You could call me semi-retired, but I’m working hard on the script; I’m a perfectionist. We’ll try to include the audience members at each show to help them get into the holiday spirit.” Olsen’s start in the field of variety shows goes way back. In each of his junior and senior years in high school, he served as head writer of the variety show at Maine

South, home of the Hawks. For the school’s newspaper, he created a six-panel comic strip, “Mighty Hawk.” “I wanted to tell stories,” Olsen says of choosing not to limit the exploits of his superhero to one or two panels. The son of the late World War II veteran Bob—“He had a dry sense of humor like I do,” Olsen says—entered a statewide forensic competition (Original Comedy category) as an upperclassman. He traveled to Peoria and did all he could to make judges cry and suffer debilitating rib injuries— from laughing too hard. Tissue boxes remained sealed. Judges did not have to dial 9-1-1. Olsen finished in fifth place. “I guess that made me the fifth-funniest teenager in Illinois,” he says. Olsen, while still in high school, debuted as a stand-up comic at the Pickle Barrel in Chicago. But he couldn’t buy much with what he made that night ($0). Olsen majored in Radio/ Television/Film

at Northwestern and performed in the school’s tradition-rich Waa-Mu Show, which began as a musical revue and became a full-length musical. He also contributed as one of the show’s writers. “I appreciated that opportunity,” Olsen recalls. “(then-Waa-Mu Director) Tom Roland trusted me.” The Practical Theatre was founded at Northwestern in 1979 by Paul Barrosse, Brad Hall, Robert Mendel, and Angela Murphy as a nonprofit theatre company dedicated to the production of improvisational comedy and plays. It launched the career of 11time Primetime Emmy Award-winner Julia LouisDreyfus. Olsen moved to Los Angeles in 1979 and wrote for the sitcom “Laverne & Shirley” for two seasons (19801981, 1981-1982). The show aired from 19761983. Garry Marshall created it, and his sister, Penny Marshall,

portrayed Laverne. “Garry was the world’s funniest man,” says Olsen, who lived in L.A. for 17 years. “He was hilarious and really good at what he did. “It was challenging, and sometimes tough, keeping the writing fresh for the same characters,” he adds. The movie The ’Burbs was released in 1989 and made close to $50 million at the box office. Joe Dante directed it. Olsen wrote it and became a Tom Hanks fan faster than it takes a director to bark “Cut!” “Tom can do anything,” says Olsen, whose other writing credits include George of the Jungle, Inspector Gadget, and who cocreated the Nickelodeon comedy television series Henry Danger with Dan Schneider. “Tom Hanks is as classy of an actor as there is. Very instinctive and wildly talented. “I watched the Band of Brothers series (created by Hanks and Steven Spielberg) during Veterans Day weekend.” Olsen has three children—33-year-old Lindsay DePaul and 30-year-old twins Andy and Kristen—from his first marriage and two grandchildren. The twins live in Chicago, and Lindsay is the girls’ varsity cross country coach at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire. “Fatherhood … it’s everything,” Olsen says. “It’s an amazing ride, and I get to enjoy more of it, in a way, with my grandchildren.” Olsen has been married to his second wife, Linda, for four years. They first met at a tailgate party before the start of the 2010 Michigan State-Northwestern football game in Evanston. She has earned two master’s degrees, one from St. Louis University and another from Washington University in St. Louis and is on pace to set an unfathomable record that should end up on the “Unbreakable Marks” page in that Guinness book. “I’ve never heard Linda complain about anything in all the years I’ve known her,” Olsen, forever grateful and still stunned, says. “Not a thing. She’s the most positiveminded person I know. She’s a go-getter. “Linda,” he adds, “is stuck in one gear— forward.” Studio5 is located at 1934 Dempster Street in Evanston.
