COMMON GROUND ARTIST AZADEH HUSSAINI ENGAGES VIEWERS IN VISUAL CONVERSATIONS WITH HER ART. BY ALLISON DUNCAN THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Chicago-based Iranian-American artist Azadeh Hussaini first discovered her passion for artistry as a teen. She received what she describes as “informal training” from her father Reza Hossaini, a prolific Tehran-based painter whose work blends the line between classicism and modernism and has been featured in more than 50 solo and group exhibitions, who gave Hussaini art classes in his studio during the summer. “At 13, I didn’t think I would ever be an artist,” says Hussaini. “I wanted to be an actress and directed a short play at school. My father told me, ‘This is not a career for your future.’ I realized painting is something I could truly connect to. It was my language for that age.” She earned her BFA in painting from Azad Art University in Iran then moved to the United States to obtain her MFA in non-figurative painting from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. She’s been working full-time as a practicing artist ever since, and her work has been displayed in numerous solo and group exhibitions in both the U.S. and Iran. Hussaini utilizes myriad mediums to explore her emotional responses to her own experiences while, at the same time, attempting to understand the basic primordial desires within the human condition. She aspires to discover commonalities among us while providing forums for open discussion and social assertiveness. While she once considered herself a painter, Hussaini now uses a paperfocused medium that combines layers Continued on PG 18

of pages from newspapers, magazines, and books. Her first-ever paper work, a 30-inch by 30-inch wall-mounted artwork, sold immediately in 2013 and motivated Hussaini to continue with this unique artistic path. “After my husband was accepted into a medical residency in Chicago, he gave me a bag of books he’d been using to study and asked me to get rid of them,” says Hussaini. “I looked at them as an important piece of our lives and started playing with them in my studio. The text of papers I use has since become important. It’s not just a material but also a message.” One of her favorite pieces Archive of the Livings is not a particularly happy one but is

always learning. When my husband and I returned to America, it was the same story. That’s when I first became interested in thinking deeply about what we as humans have in common instead of just telling my own story.” To that end, Hussaini is a curator and board member at Theatre-Y, a Chicago based theater company; on the

no less poignant. Made in 10 days, the oversize sculpture is covered with layers of newspapers in the shape of a grave to convey the idea that citizens of a country in political turmoil often feel like they live in a cage. “They are alive, but nobody hears from them,” explains Hussaini. “When you stand back, you don’t know if they are really alive or dead. The exhibition was not for sale. I destroyed it afterward. IN MEMORIAM

REMEMBERING GEOFFREY ATKINS TRIBUTE TO THE LIFE OF A TRUE WORLD-BEATER.

An unbeatable racquets champion who held the world title for 18 years straight, Geoffrey Willoughby Thomas Atkins—who died last month at 94—was the Roger Federer of the sport: graceful, coordinated and able to win matches while hardly breaking a sweat. “He was competitive and focused on the court, but in general he was very laid back” says his daughter Lucinda Sheffield, who lives in Lake Bluff. “He was a good ambassador for racquets. He was always a good sport.” Though he played in private clubs in North America and Europe as an adult, Atkins’ childhood in England was not rife with advantages. His father served in the Indian Army—then part of the British Empire—and his upbringing did not suggest the privileged world that lay ahead. Not only that, his future seemed to lead not to sports—but to acting. Atkins made quite a mark as a child actor in the blackand-white films of the day, culminating in

the role of the Duke of Dorset in the 1939 movie Goodbye Mr. Chips, where lead actor Robert Donat captured an Oscar. Only 12 at

the time, Atkins soon was offered a contract by MGM to move to Hollywood. “I think there was a little wistfulness of what could have been,” says Sheffield, pointing out her grandfather likely didn’t want to uproot his family. After learning to play racquets at Rugby in England, where he would hit the ball alone for hours, Atkins captured the British Amateur singles title in 1952 and 1953. The following year at the Queen’s Club in London, he won his first world title. Over the ensuing years—during which time he moved to Lake Forest—he fought off a number of challengers before retiring in 1971 at 44. A new champion was crowned in 1972. Even when he retired from competitive racquets, he continued to be an excellent squash player as well as court tennis player, a sport where he had won the British Amateur championship three times. Though his flat in London was filled with silver racquets trophies, his favorites were the two gold racquets he won during the championships at the The Tuxedo Club in Tuxedo Park, New York. To win one required victories over three straight years, a

feat he accomplished twice. Sheffield said her father was enamored with animals, and he also swam with dolphins on a vacation and with whale sharks in Australia. He and his daughter traveled to South Africa and other spots together, where he enjoyed sitting in the sun on the beach. As well, Atkins loved watching sports, often enjoying a cricket match and even snooker on television with his favorite drink—a gin and tonic—in hand. He taught his granddaughter Pippa how to play backgammon. Said Sheffield, “He was a gentle, kind sportsman who loved his family and nature and animals.” Atkins is survived by his twin brother Robert (Anabel), his son Nicholas (Rowena), his daughter Lucinda (Thomas Sheffield), and his grandchildren Matilda, Lilah, and Eddie Atkins, and Charlie, Henry, Sam, and Pippa Sheffield. Services in England have been held. Donations may be made in his name to Chicagobased MetroSquash via metrosquash.org or sent to MetroSquash, 6100 S. Cottage Grove Avenue, Chicago, IL 60637.

GIVING SEASON RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES OF CHICAGOLAND & NORTHWEST INDIANA IS RAISING FUNDS FOR A NEW FACILITY AT NORTHWESTERN MEDICINE PRENTICE WOMEN’S HOSPITAL, THE FIRST RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE IN THE NATION TO PROVIDE SERVICES TO FAMILIES OF INFANTS IN NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE. BY MITCH HURST THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

For the first time since its founding, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is creating a facility to exclusively serve families of newborns who require treatment in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs). Construction of the new Ronald McDonald House will begin in March 2022 at Northwestern Medicine Prentice Women’s Hospital on Chicago’s Near North Side. Nearly 1,600 babies a year are treated at Prentice’s NICU and the treatments can put

considerable stress on families that wish to stay close to their newborns. The new facility, which will be located within the hospital complex, will allow parents and siblings of newborns a place to find respite while their newest family member receives medical care. “We had been talking to Northwestern for a long time about how we could best serve families there because they have the largest NICU in Illinois and we got the go ahead to start,” says Lisa Mitchell, Vice President of Programs at RMHC. “Beyond the Ronald McDonald House near Lurie Children's Hospital, which is quite close, there was a need for support for families within the four walls of the [Prentice] hospital.” The new Ronald McDonald House at Prentice will include five suites where families can have overnight stays as well a shared community lounge with a kitchenette so meals can be brought in for families. “We're pretty good at food here and we're thankful for our partners that help us do that because the last thing you need as a parent who’s going through a lot of stress and strain is to be angry, too,” Mitchell says. “Something we can do and can help solve for them is giving them easy access to a warm meal. That

26

just takes a little bit of the edge off.” There’s also the added benefit of being able to sit down with other families who are going through similar circumstances and the opportunity to bond with and encourage each other. The new House at Prentice speaks to the overall ethos of RMHC while, being a large national organization, prides itself on being centered in community. While families often come from afar to utilize Ronald McDonald House services while their children are receiving medical treatment, the homes are often staffed by volunteers from local neighborhood where the homes are located. “We serve families who are qualified to stay because they come from some distance away. Our communities are so special because oftentimes neighbors want to support us and that is how our houses function,” says Mitchell. “Our community members are willing to step in and step up and help us.” Mitchell says this dynamic fills the need of intercon-

through and need their help, and I think that's just a really beautiful human connectedness and spirit,” she says. “That makes our houses possible.” The overall goal of the fundraising campaign for the new Ronald McDonald House at Prentice is $2.8 million. To date, $2.3 million has been raised between the collective efforts of Northwestern Memorial and Ronald McDonald House development teams. “It's been a really wonderful partnership between our two organizations where we're out there talking to supporters about the good work we're doing together,” Mitchell says. “We've been fortunate to have some great support and moving forward we're anxious to get building so that we can make good on all the generosity of so many that have come together to make it possible.” RMHC Board Member Jamie Rosen, a resident of Evanston and Director of Executive Education at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, says she has a deeply personal connection to the organization’s mission.

nectedness of neighborhoods and the desires of community members to serve closer to where they live. “People are serving in their own neighborhoods for those strangers who are traveling

| SATURDAY DECEMBER 18 | SUNDAY DECEMBER 19 2021

“When our daughter was diagnosed with cancer, we learned firsthand what it was like to be thrown into crisis,” Rosen says. “The support we received from family, friends, and our community enabled us to keep our heads above water and focus on what mattered most—getting the critical care we needed for our child.” Rosen adds that the new Ronald McDonald House at Prentice will allow parents of babies being treated in the NICU the opportunity to stay closely involved in their newborns’ care. “The expansion project at Northwestern Prentice's NICU is an important investment as we continue to expand our reach. The hospital has the largest NICU in northern Illinois and there are so many families who will benefit from having a place to stay just down the hall from where their infant is being cared for,” she says. “Things we often take for granted—a warm meal, a quiet space, a place to rest are true gifts to families and allow them to prioritize their child's care.” For more information or to donate to RMHC, visit rmhccni.org. NORTH SHORE FOODIE

RUSSIAN TEA CAKES

PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS

BY MONICA KASS ROGERS THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

These little snowballs of melt-in-yourmouth pleasure are full of crunchy toasted walnut. They’re the perfect go-along with that mug of hot chocolate, tea, or cider. Put some out for Santa, and he’ll leave a trail of powdered sugar next to the gifts under the tree. Note: On a recent baking day we made a delightful discovery: You can powder your own sugar. Just clean out your coffee grinder and pulse regular cane sugar for several seconds (about ¼ cup at a time) and voila! powdered sugar.

30

Yield: 4 dozen small cookies

METHOD

INGREDIENTS

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spread walnuts on a baking sheet and toast for 12 to 15 minutes until fragrant and browned. Rub toasted walnuts in a very-lightly dampened tea towel to remove walnut skins. Place toasted walnuts with 2 Tbsp of the powdered sugar in a food processor and pulse until ground. In the bowl of a stand mixer with paddle attachment, cream butter and 1 cup of the powdered sugar until fluffy. Beat in the flour, salt and ground walnuts.

• 2 cups (four sticks) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature • 2 cups plus 2 Tbsp powdered sugar, divided (You will use 2 Tbsp with the nuts, 1 cup in the cookie dough, and 1 cup to roll the baked cookies in) • 4-½ cups all-purpose flour, sifted • ½ tsp. salt • 2 cups walnuts

| SATURDAY DECEMBER 18 | SUNDAY DECEMBER 19 2021

Increase oven heat to 400 degrees. Cover cookie sheets with parchment paper. Pinch off and roll small pieces of dough into 1-inch balls. Place about 2 inches apart on prepared cookie sheets. Bake cookies for 8 to 10 minutes until lightly golden. Watch carefully! The bottoms brown quickly. While cookies are still hot, roll them in the remaining 1 cup of powdered sugar. Cool. Roll in powdered sugar again. Serve. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

While they seem to be as plentiful as holiday sales at this time of year, some, such as AMC+’s Christmas with Felicity manage not to get lost in the seasonal shuffle. One of the reasons for that is young actress and Highland Park resident Saige Chaseley. As artistic Madison, the niece of the titular Felicity, Chaseley makes a delightful impression on viewers in what is her first acting role in a feature film. Chaseley, who also appeared in a 2020 episode of Chicago Med, was kind enough to take time out of studying for finals, to answer a few questions for The North Shore Weekend. What does it mean to you have been cast in such a major role in your first fulllength feature? We were actually out of town for spring break when I found out that I got the part, and I was just crazy excited about it. I didn’t realize how big of a role it was until we got the schedule and saw that I filmed most of the shoot days. They also added a few new scenes with me that weren’t in the original script, which made me feel like they trusted me and were happy with my performance. The whole filming process was just amazing and so were all the people on the set. It was such an incredible experience, and I’m really grateful that I had the opportunity to be a part of it! Your character Madison is described as a “moody artist.” As a creative person yourself, someone who acts, plays piano and writes songs, and crochets, do you think that “moody artist” is a fair label for someone with artistic abilities? I think that being moody and being an artist are not mutually exclusive, because at least for me, being “moody” is a temporary feeling, but the label of an artist is more of an identity, which I’m really proud of. I definitely can be both though! Madison has a close relationship with her aunt, the movie’s titular Felicity. Are you fortunate enough to have a similar relationship with an older relative? I actually have a relationship like that with my mom! We’ve always spent a lot of time together, especially in the car driving to and from figure skating practice. ects. She’s somebody who I feel like I can talk to about anything, kind of like Madison does with Felicity. Felicity is a baker who re-establishes herself in her old

hometown with her tasty treats, including Christmas cookies. Do you like to bake, and if so, do you have a specialty? Every year, I bake a bunch of different kinds of Christmas cookies with my siblings and cousins and grandma, and I’m not sure if this counts as a specialty, but the little Hershey Kiss Blossoms are always my family’s favorite! I also did a ton of baking over quarantine, including a big batch of failed macarons, and several loaves of bread with names, of course.

Madison recognizes the spark between Felicity and local farmer James, and even draws a picture of the two of them standing under mistletoe. Is drawing something you

also consider to be one of your means of creative expression? Oh, definitely not! I am terrible at drawing and whenever I try drawing people, they always end up looking possessed! I mostly try to stick to the performing arts, for everyone’s sake. Madison makes a website and establishes a social media presence for Felicity. As someone who hosts a web series and is also on Instagram, what do you see as the pros and cons of the internet? I think that the internet is a really great tool, especially with the pandemic and everything being on Zoom. However, I do feel like social media puts a lot of pressure on people to always have something exciting going on to post about and to always look their best to impress others. I find myself getting caught up in that sometimes, and just have to remember that what I see isn’t real life and that the Internet is more of a highlight reel without all the bad stuff going on. You are currently enrolled at Chicago Academy for the Arts. What do you like best about being a student at that school? Just being surrounded by all of the super talented people. All of the departments are so different, but all so impressive in their own right. I also really love being in the city and taking the train, because Chicago really is such a cool place! It’s a very unique school and I’m fortunate to go there. You live with your family in Highland Park, and you’ve been fortunate enough to have a role on Chicago Med, as well as being in the movie Christmas with Felicity. What does it mean to you to have those kinds of opportunities so close to home? It used to be that L.A. and New York were the only cities where you could find opportunities, but Chicago has really become a place with a lot of projects going on. The Chicago acting community is also so small, and it’s exciting to make new connections and meet such amazing people! What are some of your favorite things about living in Highland Park? I’ve lived in Highland Park my whole life, and my old house was right across from the Botanic Gardens. I used to go there all the time, so that’s definitely on my list. It’s also a town where everybody kind of knows each other, which I love, and most importantly, my friends and family are here! Even though I go to school in the city, I still love Highland Park.
