When an organization opens a press release with a statement about what an event “is not,” you know there’s an identity problem. Often confused with the Highland Park’s Port Clinton Art Festival, leaders at The Art Center Highland Park (TACHP) want everyone to know that its Festival of Fine Arts is an entirely different event. “After all this time, people still think we’re a subset of Amdur Productions’ Port Clinton Art Festival,” says TACHP’s Director of Events Jackie Chilow. “In fact, when I brought in our receipts to our own bank the Monday after last year’s event, the bank teller said she’d missed our weekend event but would definitely go to the next one [Port Clinton]. This just emphasized that people don’t know that this is The Art Center Highland Park’s event and an important one for our success.” Chilow says that while the Port Clinton Art Festival is a great event, it’s important for the public to know that TACHP’s 21st annual festival—which runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 22 and June 23—is not connected in any way. DA BEARS A LAKE FOREST AUTHOR PENS NEW BOOK DOCUMENTING A CENTURY OF CHICAGO BEARS HISTORY. BY DAVID A.F. SWEET THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
While tackling the century-long history of the Chicago Bears is a staggering task, it would be hard to find someone better equipped for the job than Lake Forest resident Don Pierson. After all, he still has his 1957 copy of Sport magazine—with Chicago Bears’ fullback Rick Casares pictured on the cover by the headline “New Monsters of the Midway”—that he received as a boy growing up in Ohio. The Chicago Tribune assigned him to cover the team starting in 1968, meaning he endured the lows of the Jim Dooley-Abe Gibron era and wrote about one of the most famous teams in the history of sports, the 1985 Bears. Along with The Athletic’s Dan Pompei, Pierson has co-authored the Chicago Bears Centennial Scrapbook. Covering ownership, players, rivalries, championships and more, the coffee-table book selling for $55 commemorates the team’s 100th season in 2019. He and Pompei will appear at the History Center of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff on Thursday, June 13 at 7 p.m. to talk about their 320-page work. That same evening, the History Center will open an exhibit on the Bears that will emphasize their long ties to Lake Forest, which began in the mid-1970s and continue today in their facility near the I-94 tollway. NEWS DA BEARS Cont. from PG 1 “The whole thing was more fun than I thought it would be,” said Pierson about the three-year project. “I really enjoyed looking up the old games. But about halfway through the book, I said to Dan, ‘This isn’t funny enough. We need to do stuff on guys who are just characters.’ They blew it up into a major section.” Perhaps the most obvious character is Mike Ditka. Once, when he played for the Bears, a fan ran onto the field near the end of the game at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Ditka knocked him to the ground. As legendary Chicago columnist Mike Royko wrote, “The fans booed Ditka, but that was wrong. Ditka has been trained since
high school to knock down anything that moves.” Of course, Ditka coached the 1985 Bears, and Pierson was an eyewitness. “They were such a fun team to cover. They were so open,” Pierson recalled. “I make the argument in the book that was the best NFL season ever. “They weren’t a dynasty. But I defy anyone but the most rabid sports fan to tell me the difference between the 1962 Green Bay Packers and the 1965 Packers. The 1985 Bears—people in China knew who The Fridge was.” Though Pierson’s ties to the team run deep (he covered them until 1987, when he moved to the Tribune’s NFL beat), they aren’t as long or thorough as those of one woman: team owner Virginia Halas McCaskey. Born in 1923 to George Halas— founder of the Bears—she is old enough to re-

It’s just fascinating.” Though Pierson knew plenty about Halas, he was still inspired by his impact on the sport from the beginning of the NFL in 1920. “His fingerprints were on everything,” Pierson said. “The history of the Bears so mirrors the history of the NFL, from the shape of the ball to the rules.” With the deadline for the book slated for the
middle of the 2018 season, Pierson had a question for the editors that summer about the squad coming off a 5-11 campaign. “I said, ‘What if they make the Super Bowl?’ Everyone laughed.” Then, as the Bears thrived under new coach Matt Nagy, going 12-4, the deadline was pushed back. But the double doink in the playoffs ruined any chance of a Super Bowl ending to the opus. From Sid Luckman to Dick Butkus to Walter Payton and beyond, there was plenty to write about. Pierson pointed out the Bears gave a free hand to cover what he and Pompeii wished, even if it wasn’t flattering. Said the veteran scribe, “I would say this is the definitive history of the entire operation.”

Your ordinary 5K run doesn’t call for 500 pounds of corn starch. But then, GO Color Lake Bluff is not your typical 5K run. On June 22, runners and walkers of all ages will gather for a 5K run and 3K walk that kicks off at the Lake Bluff Metra station parking lot and runs along the Robert McClory Bike Path. At each kilometer, the participants will be soaked from shoulder to toe in a different color of corn starch. The event will benefit Lake Bluff Preschool, which is in the market for a new playground. Lake Bluff Park District Preschool and Early Childhood Director Dana Hansen says their current playground is beginning to rust. “We would like to provide to the children an updated playground that includes musical instruments, stepping stones, benches, and a lower-tothe-ground play module,” she says. Their goal is to raise $65,000 for the new playground. Hansen says they will also apply for state grants for land development.

Being that they are all from Lake Forest and Lake Bluff, they always enjoy being involved in community events.” Emceeing the event is comedian Rick Young—a longtime resident of the area and the manager of the Chicago Comedy All-Stars. At the starting line, groups of 25 people will be released every 90 seconds. Runners will go first and walkers will follow. They will be doused with

colored corn starch at each of the five color stations along the way. “If you’ve ever done a color run and walk, you know how much fun they are,” says Lake Bluff Park District Fitness Center Manager Cati Christensen. “This event is a fun activity for the entire community especially families and kids of all ages.” The event will also feature a Taste of the North Shore, with food vendors from Burnsie’s Uptown and Donati’s Pizza to Milwalky Taco and Suzy’s Swirl. “There will be a photo wall for participants to take colorful selfies after the race,” Christensen says. “Some local businesses will be on hand with helpful information and demonstrations.” They’ve signed up about 20 volunteers so far. Hansen says they could always use more. “People should come to be a part of the first annual color run,” she says. “All those who come are guaranteed a great experience. Four-midable Quartet of New Trier teams garners state trophies on the same weekend.

The New Trier High School athletics department did not just have a banner day on June 1. It enjoyed a … banner day—times four. Four of the school’s sports teams competed on the final day of their respective seasons and went 4-for-4, with two of the programs claiming state championships and the other two earning thirdplace hardware. “I’m happy for the athletes and the coaches,” NTHS Athletic Director Augie Fontanetta says. “I’m also happy we built additional trophy cases two years ago and put them in an area at the school where we could display the big trophies more prominently.” NT’s boys lacrosse and girls lacrosse squads won state titles in Hinsdale. The boys overwhelmed Warren Township High School 16-4 in the first final, and the girls avenged their titlegame loss to Hinsdale Central last spring with a convincing 12-4 defeat of the Red Devils. NT’s boys volleyball team, meanwhile, finished in third place at the state tournament in Hoffman Estates. NT’s girls soccer crew then matched that showing after downing Lyons Township High School 2-0 in the third-place match in Naperville. “Remarkable,” Fontanetta says. “Playing for third place is sometimes tough because it’s not easy to get motivated for it after dealing with the disappointment of a semifinal loss. But our volleyball and soccer players were excited to play and compete one more time with their teammates.” Several of Fontanetta’s “teammates”—or his administrative colleagues—hit the road before the athletes hit the court and the fields. Superintendent Dr. Paul Sally took in the action, as did Principal Denise Dubravec, who attended the trophy presentations in Hoffman Estates and Naperville. NTHS Assistant Boys Athletic Director Paul Moretta supported and cheered for Trevians, too. “We divided and conquered,” says Fontanetta, who started his day in Hoffman Estates and ended it in Hinsdale. NTHS Assistant Girls Athletic Director Jim Burnside would have been wherever Fontanetta needed him to be on June 1, but he had to be with New Trier’s girls soccer team at North Central College in Naperville for a very good reason. He’s the team’s head coach. “I truly believe we have the best coaches in the state,” Fontanetta says, adding, while chuckling, he had to kick people out of Burnside’s office on May 28 so that the coach could fully prepare for NT’s Class 3A supersectional match against Stevenson High School later that day. “Our coaches are committed to excellence, just like the kids are,” continues the AD, who had

vians senior keeper Meghan Dwyer made a combined six saves in two matches. Coach Jim Burnside (529-76-37, in 23 seasons at NTHS) has guided teams to six consecutive top-three state finishes. His 2014, 2015 and 2016 clubs captured state championships. Burnside also coached NT girls soccer teams to state titles in 2003, 2004 and 2006.

also watched the school’s girls water polo team place fourth at state and the boys tennis team take state runner-up honors on the previous two weekends. “Our coaching staffs are deep. Our coaches coach here for a while. And the athletes’ parents, along with the support we get from other members of the community, provide a wonderful base for our programs.” Burnside’s nephew Emmett Burnside had an airtight excuse for not watching Uncle Jim’s soccer team battle on either May 31 (when the Trevians lost a 2-1 state semifinal to Barrington High School’s two-time reigning state champion Fillies) or June 1. Emmett, a son of NT girls cross country coach John Burnside, was too busy, as a middle blocker, helping NT’s boys volleyball team win two of three state tournament matches in Hoffman Estates last weekend. Some highlights from New Trier’s highly successful weekend on the field, the pitch, and the court: BOYS LACROSSE: Trevians senior attackman Henry Scherb poured in five goals and delivered three assists in NT’s 16-4 rout of Warren in the championship game. Another attackman named Henry (Henry Freedman) finished with four goals and an assist, and senior middie Gavin Randle had three goals. Juniors Cooper Yaccino (three saves) and Brian Dolby (one) shared time
in goal for the victors (20-5). New Trier coach Tom Herrala improved to 200-56 in his 11th season with program. Freedman and freshman middie Johnny Hackett each tallied two goals in NT’s 8-6 defeat of Neuqua Valley High School in a state semifinal on May 30. Senior middie Brian Sitzer dished a pair of assists.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL: Making its sixth straight Elite Eight appearance in boys volleyball, New Trier placed third at state for the first time in program history after edging Oak Park-River Forest High School 29-31, 25-22, 25-21 on June 1. Junior hitters Peter Brown and Colin Heath struck for 16 and 11 kills, respectively, and senior setter Zach Salberg lofted 35 assists. Senior libero Aaron Schatz averaged a team-high 13 digs in three state matches for New Trier (32-8), which finished fourth at state last spring and runner-up at state in 2016. The Trevians lost in straight sets to Glenbard West in a state semifinal, also on June 1, after topping St. Rita in three sets in a state quarterfinal on May 31. NT coach Sue Ellen Haak owns an overall record of 519-168 after 18 seasons at the school.
GIRLS LACROSSE: NT junior attack Annie Thompson and junior middie Charley Meier scored three goals apiece in the Trevians’ 12-4 defeat of Hinsdale Central in the title game, a day after junior middie Claudia Shevitz had a hand in 10 goals (seven goals, three assists) in a 15-14 semifinal victory over Glenbrook South. Junior attack Lucy Murray notched a combined five goals and five assists in the wins for New Trier (22-1-2). New Trier’s Macy Zaban, a sophomore middie, contributed two goals in the semifinal. Trevians senior goalkeeper Kate Burnham stopped five shots in the title game and six in the semi. NT coach Pete Collins’ overall record after 18 years at the school stands at 365-72-12. GIRLS SOCCER: New Trier forward Emma Weaver netted all three of her team’s goals last weekend, including the pair in the 2-0 defeat of Lyons Township in the third-place contest. Tre-

Often when it comes to the best things in life, timing plays a pivotal role. Highland Park’s Carol Summerfield would vouch for this sentiment 100 percent. As we sit in the bright new office space of The History Center of Lake Forest–Lake Bluff—a far cry from the tiny coach house that once housed our community’s historical archives— Summerfield explains why she walked away from the flourishing consulting business she founded. “I hadn’t intended to slide into this full-time role,” says Summerfield, who recently joined The History Center of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff as its new executive director. “I really loved running my own company. But I saw this opportunity in front of us to change the museum world—to show museums how to adjust to the world that’s coming—and I had to be a part of it.” Summerfield knew she had a chance to build a legacy in the community. The History Center was originally founded in 1972 as the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society with 100 charter members who were committed to preserve the history of Lake Forest and Lake Bluff. For many years, the Historical Society maintained an office in at the Gorton Community Center before opening its first museum in a former coach house at 361 E. Westminster Street. But in 2016, after a multimillion-dollar capital campaign, the Historical Society moved to the former Church of Christ Scientist at 509 E. Deerpath Road, renovated the space into its current state-ofthe-art History Center of Lake ForestLake Bluff. “Before they officially hired me, I was working with the History Center’s board on how to increase audience engagement. It’s the age-old question for museums that if someone can find the information they need online, at 11 p.m. in their pajamas, they’re not going to come through the museum door,” she says, adding: “We need to identify a deeper narrative and build a deeper connection to the stories. And we need to be creative. If we don’t find a way to show that these local history museums have value, we will fade. But we’re fortunate to have a community that has invested in making this happen—they believe in what we’re doing.” In addition to providing interactive touch screens with searchable local history as well as a rotating historical exhibit, the History Center is building a recording studio where residents can

record their own personal histories through a series of prompts. “This is so exciting and we’re the first to use technology, this way, and in this setting,” says Summerfield. “There are nearly infinite stories we can tell.” Once the recordings are made, they will be tagged and catalogued by our History Center curator to enhance their accessibility. “Fifty years ago, people wrote letters a n d kept

diaries—we don’t do that any more,” she says. “While we have a great catalog of photos, we don’t have the written narrative. These recording capabilities will help with this. Residents can talk about whatever they want—a milestone, a party, a family member, a teacher. There is such animation in the spoken story.” One of her personal favorites? “When I first moved up here a dozen years ago and would commute from the Fort Sheridan train station, I was one of two women standing on the platform. By the end of my commuting run, women were more than 50 percent of the people going to the city,” she says. “That was a huge change I saw firsthand in just a little over a decade. Now imagine this story from someone 30 years older than me or 30 years younger than me. What we will start to build is a deep tapestry of how life has changed. Imagine if someday someone can come here and listen to their grandparent speak. It gives me chills to think about this.” With eyes set on the future, Summerfield is most excited about a series of lectures that will take place in 2020, “20 in the 20s.” This exhibit will look at what it was like to be in your 20s, in 1920, and in your 20s, in 2020. “We are having to turn away interns who want to help us with this project,” an enthusiastic Summerfield says. “But the collaborative possibilities with The Lake Bluff Museum, Gorton Community Center, Ragdale, or the Lake Forest Symphony are endless. It’s this type of content that keeps us all relevant.” The History Center also has re-envisioned its membership to better align itself with where members see value. They’re now offering various levels of tickets based on a member’s financial support so they can maximize their use of the center’s programming. “We’re redefining the museum narrative,” Summerfield says. “The goal of our programming is to improve a person’s sense of self, of place, and of community.
