Jody Michael Associates has been helping leaders and executives achieve their goals since 1997. In this edition, CEO Jody Michael breaks down what executive coaching is, what to look for in a coach and how to unlock leadership, career and life potential.
The short answer is, because you want to improve your performance; but there are many reasons why an executive coach might be the right answer for you:
1. You’re ambitious and driven to constantly improve.
2. You’ve plateaued and need that extra push to get out of your rut and back on track to be your best.
3. You have blind spots. Of course, you may not be aware of them until you begin working with a coach; but your coach will help you not only become aware of blind spots, but work with you to overcome them.
4. You’re avoiding an area of weakness that you haven’t been able to overcome; whether it’s crucial conversations or situational leadership, a coach can hold you accountable and give you experiential homework to help.
5. You’re challenged in some capacity at work. Maybe you’re on a performance improvement plan, you have a colleague or supervisor that you don’t know how to work with or you are facing some other political quagmire.
An executive coach is someone who specializes in developing an executive to optimize their leadership performance. At its very core, coaching is a catalyst for change. In some ways, working with a coach is like working with a personal trainer. In order to achieve results, you need to do the work, but the trainer brings the expertise to assess, direct, correct, motivate and support you along the way. A good coach will help reveal your blind spots and challenge your perceptions, introduce new ways of thinking and provide the tools you need to be even more successful.
How can coaching help me as a leader and as an executive?
Given that most of what we achieve in life is due not to our external circumstances, but to our individual operating systems (our thoughts, moods, perceptions and beliefs), perhaps the most fundamental work of a coach is to bring these deeply ingrained mental processes to the surface.
Coaching can help you understand the linkage between these processes, and your leadership abilities and gaps. A good coach enables you to:
• Improve situational leadership skills
• Increase your emotional intelligence
• Inspire and influence key stakeholders
• Build executive presence
• Increase employee engagement
• Embody and inspire accountability
• Achieve business results more quickly
• Navigate political minefields
What if I’m already successful?
Think about Tom Brady—he’s won six Super Bowls, but he still has a coach. In fact, some of the world’s most successful people continue to work with coaches long after they’ve become successful. Without a coach it’s easy to overplay your strengths, to stay in your comfort zone or neglect to build the range needed to reach the next level. To be a truly great leader, you need to break through performance limitations. Executive coaching helps facilitate those transformational breakthroughs by offering a perspective that is hard to see yourself. Essentially, executives are no different than athletes.
Is there a difference between executive coaching and other types of coaching?
Whether the focus is executive, career or general wellness, successful coaching approaches all share a common goal: to facilitate growth. When you’re able to achieve greater self-awareness, clarity, observational capacity and confidence, you achieve success in all
aspects of life. As a result, you find yourself finally able to get that coveted promotion, attract more income and cultivate emotional intelligence and executive presence. You’re able to connect with others and lead with greater impact and influence.
The lines between coaching, mentoring, counseling and consulting are often blurred; and indeed, the best coaches have skills and experiences that reflect this mixture. Ideally, a coach will have a background in some area of human behavior, such as psychology. Great coaches bring to the table extensive coaching experience, coaching credentials, targeted supplemental education and use of best practices in neuroscience, cognition and psychology, and if they are an executive coach—business acumen and strong leadership experience.
With over 1 billion dollars spent annually in America on executive coaching, it should come as no surprise that there have been many studies done on the effectiveness of having a coach. A recent survey by PricewaterhouseCoopers and the Association Resource Centre found that the mean ROI in coaching was 7 times the initial investment. The International Coaching Federation (ICF) reports that “leaders who participated in coaching saw 50 – 70% increases in work performance, time management, and team effectiveness.” It’s clear that when it comes to influencing the bottom line—leadership matters—and coaching plays a huge role in developing leaders. Whereas coaching was once primarily
seen as a way to remedy an unfavorable situation, today the focus is on developing leaders and maximizing potential.
Here’s important information that a large percentage of coaches don’t want you to know: Coaching is an unregulated industry, which means anyone can call themselves a coach. While nothing speaks louder than a proven track record—including testimonials from satisfied current and past clients—there are some criteria that every coach should meet.
Look for a coach with professional credentials and qualifications, which indicate their level of training and professional development.
The ICF credentials are:
ACC: Associate Certified Coach, 100+ hours of paid coaching experience
PCC: Professional Certified Coach, 500+ hours of paid coaching experience
MCC: Master Certified Coach, 2,500+ hours of paid coaching experience These designations appear after a coach’s name. Next, look at leadership experience and business acumen. Extensive corporate and entrepreneurial experience are crucial skills that allow a coach to understand not only your personal but your business challenges as well. Good coaches help deliver measurable bottom line results.
Probably the most important thing is “good fit and chemistry”—it feels right. This is NOT to be underestimated.
From being too old, too damaged or too stuck in their ways, people often doubt that true change is within their reach. But the answer is, unequivocally, yes. People can change, as long as you have an authentic desire for change and a commitment to do the work. True change doesn’t happen by accident; it requires openness, perseverance and a high level of accountability. Change begins with developing self-awareness, followed by making better choices, implementing measurable micro-habits and repeating these behaviors until they stick. Most change attempts are unsuccessful as a result of people failing to understand and execute change technology best practices. This is where a coach can really help move the needle.
One of the most powerful things you can do every morning is to set an intention for the day. It’s a small effort with a big payback. When you go through life on auto-pilot, letting things “happen to you,” you are reactive. By contrast, setting a daily intention increases your awareness so that you can respond to situations in a very deliberate manner. This increased awareness is the first step toward making any change, however incremental.

reat ideas don’t often arrive wrapped up in a neat little bow—unless you’re Brenna Nichols. When friends began to ask Nichols to wrap their holiday gifts, she realized there might just be a business there. She just needed a name. The idea came during a dinner party brainstorming session: “It has to be Gifted,” assured dear friend Lisa Kinzelberg.
Gifted is the product of watching mother Sally, a former architect and incredible crafter, at work, and of her own experience in the corporate world—Nichols spent years as a brand manager at Miller Brewing Company, where she met her husband, John. “I’m a logistics kind of gal,” she says. “I love to organize.”
Nichols chose to leave the company after giving birth to oldest son Fisher, now 8. Shortly after, the young family made their move to the North Shore. “Being a stay-at-home mom had its perks and also its challenges—I loved the relationship-building that came with corporate life,” Nichols explains. While she knew, with two children now at home (Fisher was joined just a few years later by Bauer, age 5), that she did not want to return to a traditional office setting, Nichols was nonetheless determined to continue creating connections.
News quickly spread from the dedicated wrapping room on the third floor of her Winnetka home through her website, Instagram, and word of mouth across the Shore and now all over the country. Offerings have since expanded from gift wrapping to also include ideas as to what to put inside that shiny paper. “I have to get down to the nuts and bolts of relationships to gift the right way—it’s the details that help me land on the right gift,” she says.
The self-described “gift concierge” seamlessly guides clients through ideation, gift procurement, wrapping, and delivery. “Some clients are involved down to the color of the bow while others simply provide the who, when, and where (and the budget), and leave the rest to me,” Nichols says. Every step is tailored to their individual needs, whether they are dropping items off for sameday wrapping or working with Nichols 2-3 months in advance to plan out their gifting schedules.
Nichols is able to personalize gifts using her own vinyl cutting machine and heat press, from water bottles and wine tumblers to baby bibs and towels, all done on demand and in real time. “I help clients express themselves. A lot of people don’t know you can do that through gifting.”
She also offers decorating services for birthdays, baby showers, and truly spectacular installations for Christmas, adorning staircases and wreaths alike in perfect velvet bows. Another popular
offering that time of year is her Christmas in a Box: everything wrapped and tagged and ready to go under the tree.
She has never gifted the same thing twice nor does she buy any supplies in bulk. “I want people to have a unique experience, to get something here they can’t get anywhere else,” Nichols shares.
“I love to make people happy, to spread joy,” she continues. One example of this involved friend and client Jen Felderman, whose daughter Reese battled childhood leukemia. Together they selected Yeti tumblers in hot pink—Reese’s favorite color—for her 13 nurses and state-of-theart stethoscopes—in the same vibrant shade—for her two neurologists. The inscription read: Thank you for slaying my beast. “I was so honored to be a part of that story.” Reese has been cancer-free since July 2018.
“At the beginning, I didn’t know the scope of what this would turn into,” she reveals. She now works with around 20 clients at a time and, just last Christmas, handled a whopping 488 gifts, 206 of which she also selected. “What I hear most (and what I love to hear most) is, ‘You made my life so easy,’” she says. “Relationships are complicated—gift-giving doesn’t have to be.”

Unearthed, opening this month at the Illinois Holocaust Museum in Skokie, reveals the rare and often haunting photos of Henryk Ross, some of which were captured clandestinely during his years in Poland’s Lodz Ghetto.
WORDS BY LAURA LAYFER TREITMANFrom 1940-1944, Polish Jewish photojournalist Henryk Ross (1910-1991) was on assignment, taking official photographs inside the Lodz Ghetto for the Department of Statistics of the Nazi-controlled Jewish Council. Unbeknownst to the Council, Ross was simultaneously amassing a photographic record of everyday scenes and atrocities, covertly preserving on film the reality of life in the ghetto, at the possible risk of his own life.
During the final liquidation of Lodz in 1944, Ross buried his negatives—over 6,000 in count—along with other artifacts in hopes that should he not survive, his photographic account of what occurred would. When the ghetto was liberated by the Red Army in 1945, Ross was able to excavate and recover his buried negatives with about half of them surviving, one of the largest visual records of its kind to survive the Holocaust. Nearly 300 of these images will be on display at Illinois Holocaust Museum through Memory Unearthed: The Lodz Ghetto Photographs Of Henryk Ross opening this month.
Part of a traveling exhibition from the Art Gallery of Ontario, which holds in its collection the extensive inventory of Ross’ images (a gift of the Archive of Modern Conflict back in 2007) and is responsible for taking on the considerable task of researching, cataloguing, and digitizing the 3,000 surviving negatives, Memory Unearthed first showed in Toronto in 2015. Since then it has traveled across the United States, visiting institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Portland Art Museum, and New York’s Museum of Jewish Heritage. This will be the exhibition’s first time in the Midwest.
Walking through Unearthed, explains IHM Chief Curator of Collections and Exhibitions Arielle Weininger, “People will see the
propaganda work he was forced to do for the Nazis alongside his clandestine efforts: early photographs of weddings and birthday parties, couples kissing. It is these intimate moments that make up a piece of the resistance he revealed: people continuing with their lives through the direst of circumstances, continuing to hope.”
Other unauthorized photographs reveal shoeless workers conscripted into backbreaking labor; public hangings; deportees, including the elderly, being forcibly marched to the train station,
this huge survivor population. The public will not only get to see what happened through photographs and read about this part of history but to hear from those who lived through it.”
During his time in Israel from the 1960s to the ’80s, following his testimony in the 1961 trial of SS officer Adolf Eichmann, in which his photographs played a compelling role, Ross revisited his Lodz archives. He selected images from his numerous contact sheets and compiled them into a portfolio, creating a highly personal catalogue of what he saw through his lens. Ten pages of this seventeen-page portfolio will be featured as part of the exhibition.
“The portfolio is not chronological but categorized by what it emphasizes. You can see how Ross’ brain was working at the time. I think it was his way to deal with his experience,” explains Weininger. “What becomes clear, what it seems he most held onto from that period in his life, was not only the horrible labor those interned were forced into, and the tragedy of the deportations, which were, in reality, death sentences, but the enduring love he had for his wife, Stefania, whose portraits are featured heavily in this compilation and served as his lookout in Lodz.”
Of his courage in the face of extreme adversity Ross has said, “I buried my negatives in the ground in order that there should be some record of our tragedy.” And in remembrance is the seed of resistance.
Memory Unearthed: The Lodz Ghetto Photographs Of Henryk Ross runs from September 22 through January 12. For more information, visit ilholocaustmuseum.org.
destined for death camps; and children in the back of trucks being ripped away from their families. Ross was able to capture this rare footage of deportation by hiding inside a warehouse for hours on end.
“It’s important to remember that when we’re looking at these photographs, that this was an incredible act of resistance by one person, done at great risk, through sheer will and with an immense sense of empathy,” Weininger shares. “After his experience, Ross never picked up his camera again.”
Throughout the exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to center themselves through these moving, and often difficult, images through maps, timelines, and historical context, and examine artifacts Ross collected, such as notices from the Jewish Council, or Judenrat, led by controversial figure Chaim Rumkowski, himself sent to his death at Auschwitz by the end of the war. These public missives announced deportations, rights being stripped away, unacceptable behaviors, and other warnings to residents.
Despite the Judenrat’s eventual ban against music, composers held captive in Lodz continued to write, in a heroic act of cultural resistance. These forbidden compositions provide background music to the exhibition, allowing visitors to experience the sounds of the ghetto as they take in its sights. Other recorded material includes testimonies of local survivors of the Polish ghetto, the second-largest in Nazi-occupied Europe: “Skokie is blessed with
Sir Andrew Davis celebrates his 20th anniversary as music director of the Lyric Opera with a stellar season of performances to match a singular career.
atmosphere was extremely welcoming,” Davis recalls. “Everyone was united in enthusiasm for what we were there to do: put on great opera.”
As he tells it, Sir Andrew Davis’ story begins at Cambridge. The organ scholar assumed he’d end up a cathedral organist somewhere in England, but fate— and a newly discovered passion for conducting—instead led him to Rome to study under famed Italian conductor Franco Ferrara. His next stop was the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
Applying for a position at BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in 1970, he called upon one of his closest friends from Cambridge, who at the time played in their orchestra. “He went to the audition office on my behalf—no one was there, but he saw three piles of applications on the desk: ‘yes,’ ‘no,’ and ‘maybe.’ On top of the latter is where he saw my application, which he promptly relocated as a ‘yes.’ I’ve always told him my entire career is all his fault,” Davis laughs.
Two years later, Davis made his first tour of the United States, ending with a guest spot at the Toronto Symphony that resulted in a permanent position as principal conductor, which he held from 1975 until 1988. Following his time in Toronto, he served as music director of the Glyndebourne Festival Opera and as chief conductor of the prestigious BBC Symphony Orchestra.
Upon the retirement of its music director, Bruno Bartoletti, in 1999 Davis was approached by Chicago’s Lyric Opera. “The
With this season marking his 20th as the Lyric’s music director and principal conductor, Davis shares he has most enjoyed the breadth of work he has been able to perform and the great diversity in style, citing Strauss’s Elektra, revived by the Lyric last season; Wagner’s Parsifal, Britten’s Billy Budd, which featured his son, now a composer himself; and Berg’s Lulu, one of his favorites, as standouts.
Also marking the Lyric’s 65th anniversary, the 2019/20 season kicks off with The Barber of Seville, thought to be one of the greatest masterpieces of comedy within the genre. Rossini’s boisterous two-act opera buffa is a new production for Lyric, featuring a truly international cast joining American tenor Lawrence Brownlee, whom Davis refers to as “one of the great wonders of the world,” on stage.
Barber is followed by Luisa Miller. The modern American opera Dead Man Walking, Mozart’s Don Giovanni, and selections from Donizetti’s Three Queens trilogy close out 2019.
2020 will alight with Madama Butterfly; Tchaikovsky’s brooding thriller, The Queen of Spades; and culminate in April with Wagner’s Ring cycle. This season marks the debut of the fourth opera in the series, the tragedy Gotterdammerung, presented in conjunction with the previous three works as part of three separate cycles, a truly monumental undertaking of music.
“Monumental” seems equally appropriate in describing Davis’ own extraordinary career, a body of work that has been truly pitch-perfect.

When I lived in New York, I was fortunate enough to occasionally spot Lee Bouvier Radziwill (1933-2019) strolling along Madison Avenue on the Upper East Side. No matter where I may have been rushing off to in a typical mad Manhattan moment, seeing her always stopped me in my tracks. Classy and cool, her timeless style transcended a history that spanned from politics to Pop art and culture; a confidante and stoic sister alongside Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and great presence during the Camelot years of President John F. Kennedy, to famous friendships with Andy Warhol, The Rolling Stones, photographer Peter Beard, and Cecil Beaton, among others. Radziwill was not short of an impressive resume of titles herself: wife, mother, socialite, princess (by way of her second marriage to Prince Stanislaw Radziwill), actress, PR executive for Giorgio Armani (to whom she was also a muse, as she was to writer Truman Capote), interior designer, and author of two books, Happy Times and Lee. This is the legacy that Christie’s New York celebrates in October as part of their Collectors Week sales.
“Ms. Radziwill was the embodiment of good taste—always
elegant and fashionable. She lived well, surrounded by beauty in all its forms. Christie’s is honored to have been entrusted with this landmark auction—to share the story of her fascinating life and connoisseurship,” says Winnetka’s Cathy Busch, Head of Christie’s Midwest. While New York was home, Radziwill kept an apartment in Paris, too, but it was previous residences such as in London and designed by renowned Italian architect Renzo Mongiardino that influenced a consistent aesthetic of deep solid colors balanced with chic bold patterns. “I like to create rooms which are essentially traditional—and then add touches of the bizarre and the delicious,” Radziwill once said, “... and when I buy something, I do so with the intention of keeping it forever. I’m constantly falling in love with objects, and they follow me around the world.” That same fascination for the treasures and their steward, her fine and decorative art, books, costume jewelry, photographs, and memorabilia, highlight a dedicated catalogue and accompanying exhibition prior to the October 17 auction, when they will travel on to new places and patrons.

FIRST CLASS DINING AND TRAVEL EXPERIENCES
FROM THE MAGICAL LANDS OF THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES TO NEW CULINARY EXPERIENCES, HERE IS A TASTE OF THE BEST OF FOREIGN TRAVEL AND LOCAL CUISINE
We’ve covered George Trios in a previous Dinner Date. The 12-course tasting menu, hand-delivered and described by Chef Michael Lachowicz in person, was one of the most exquisite evenings we’ve encountered.
The same prodigious skill responsible for that experience now brings two additional restaurants to the North Shore all in the same building
ABOYER is happening. Groups of friends, families with kids, everyone lively, loud, and excited. There’s weekend energy to the room, even on the Wednesday evening of our visit. A pristine bar occupies one side of the room evoking a modern mixologist’s test kitchen. A white marble bar and subway tile walls set the stage while we sipped a Huckleberry Mojito and a gin variation on an Old Fashioned. The menu applies Chef Michael’s legendary French training to a scrumptious collection of comfort foods. A glance at the tables surrounding us promised that it would all be delicious.
In a word, exceptional. Dry Spanish chorizo sausage injects a zesty bite into the beautifully juicy bird swimming in decadent truffle sauce. Wild rice brings a warm risotto comfort to the plate, balanced nicely by the crunch of frisée.
Aboyer was designed to be the most approachable room under Chef Michael’s roof, not a white table cloth in sight. The Beef entree is Angus hanger steak, cooked to perfection, accompanied by the most mouth-watering chimichurri Béarnaise sauce. It works the same magic on the Pomme Frites as it does on the meat. Although, if you opted for a side of Creamy Whipped Pomme Puree or the Herbed Potato Gnocchi, old-school Chef Michael aficionados would nod in appreciation.
Three distinct restaurants, three unique menus, three completely different evenings of incredible dining all under one roof.
SILENCIEUX is magic. When the door swung shut behind us, the music and lively chatter of Aboyer disappeared and were replaced by classic jazz standards. Floor to ceiling windows fill the space with twilight. A large wooden art piece on the wall is both aesthetically pleasing and serves to dampen the acoustics of the room. This is the space for conversation over elevated cuisine. It’s the kind of place where two varieties of fresh table bread arrive with unsalted butter and three different flavors of sea salt to accent it.
Silencieux is a prix fixe three-course evening with five incredible options for the first and main courses and a few desserts. The dining room filled up quickly and we saw a wide variety of menu selections at neighboring tables. Everything we saw looked Instagram perfect, but we can’t recommend the two following dishes highly enough.
This dish was the highlight of our night. The house made pasta is the perfect texture, concealing prime bites of lobster. Confit white asparagus brings an element of crunch to the plate, but it’s the sauce that really makes everything sing. The asparagus-lobster jus is almost floral in its richness, almost like a savory syrup with a subtle garlic sweetness.
This one is dinner and a show, rolled out on a cart and deboned tableside. The flavor is exquisite—mild and buttery. Perhaps we’re just suckers for Chef Michael’s lobster sauces because the sole comes with a frothy hazelnut lobster jus that is out of this world. With a side of crisped forbidden rice and edamame grounding the dish between bites, this is a beautiful centerpiece for an unforgettable three-course meal.
Before oil was discovered in the 1950s, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was a quiet backwater with an economy dependent upon the capture of silvery fish and luminous pearls. Oil exports have transformed the UAE into one of the Middle East’s most important economic centers—a center capped by the glittering cities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, two cosmopolitan meccas bristling with art, adventure, culture, and cuisine. Beyond these bustling cities lay exquisite island oases and deep desert palaces. Our adventure took us to these cities, islands, and desert locales as we were introduced to a region where ancient customs intersect with modern landscapes.
After a direct flight from Chicago, we found the pristine Dubai airport easy to navigate and were quickly on our way to Anantara’s The Palm Dubai, a luxury resort located on the crescent of the iconic Palm Jumeirah. This artificial palm-shaped archipelago extends into the Persian Gulf and is known for its posh hotels and gorgeous views of the Dubai coastline. The resort complex boasts beautifully appointed rooms designed with contemporary Asian flair (a nod to Anantara’s Thai origins) that overlook either tranquil lagoons or a white sand beach.
Following an active day of sunbathing, kayaking, and paddle boarding, we relaxed in the resort’s glorious spa and experienced the traditional Turkish Hamman—a full-body scrub and massage. This divine experience took place in warm marble rooms adorned with traditional Turkish floral designs.
The Palm Dubai exceeded every expectation in the culinary department. Guests can begin each morning savoring Crescendo’s extensive breakfast buffet. The Beach House’s Mediterranean dishes make for a delicious midday beachside repast. Dinner options include a succulent dinner of prime cuts of meat and seafood at the Australian-themed Bushman’s Restaurant & Bar or the palate tantalizing Asian cuisine of Mekong.
Off resort, a visit to the Burj Khalifa is a top priority. The tallest building in the world, designed by Lake Forest’s own Adrian Smith, offers stunning views of Dubai and the spectacular Dubai
Fountain. (Smith and his wife Nancy will host the opening night extravaganza for the World’s International Exposition in Dubai in October 2020.)
En route to our next destination, Sir Bani Yas Island off the coast of Abu Dhabi, we spent the day at two architectural wonders—the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. The Louvre Abu Dhabi is topped with a lattice dome created from eight kaleidoscopic layers of perforated steel that filter sunlight to create a visual “rain of light.” This intricate roof equals the Eiffel Tower’s weight yet appears to float atop the museum. In contrast, the Grand Mosque soars skyward like a falcon. Vast marble domes supported by columns adorned with golden elements hover above an intricate mosaic floor. Located on a massive 30-acre campus and surrounded by shimmering blue pools, the mosque exudes an aura of surreal calm.
After a day basking in the city’s culture, we arrived at Sir Bani Yas Island’s Anantara Al Yamm resort—an all-villa sanctuary where Emirati splendor meets a green oasis overlooking turquoise waters. Our villa was nestled on a beach peppered with peacocks and gazelles that stretched before a field of mangroves whose tendrils were kissed by the dazzling Arabian Sea at high tide. Scores of peacocks and gazelles enjoyed the mangroves at low tide and often came to our patio for a closer inspection of their guests.
The island is a wildlife sanctuary founded by His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Sheikh Zayed founded the UAE in 1971 and was President of Abu Dhabi for decades. A staunch conservationist, he desired that the island be home to free-roaming animals. The success of his efforts was apparent during a guided wildlife drive into the Arabian Wildlife Park where we marveled at the numerous species on the island. Sightings included giraffes, ostriches, cheetahs, and the prized Arabian Oryx. The island is also a hiker’s dream—Wadi (dry valley) walks are beautiful and reveal a mountainous island landscape, towering multi-colored rock corridors, and salt domes.
The resort offers many options to alleviate any hunger pangs. Our favorite culinary experience entailed an elaborate tea on the beach where we savored an assortment of hearty sandwiches, delicate scones, and sweets. Another top choice was dinner at the beachside Olio—a tranquil Italian-inspired restaurant that just might have the best Bolognese on the planet.
Guests of Al Yamm also have access to Anantara’s Al Sahel resort in the interior of the island and Anantara’s Desert Islands Resort & Spa. Al Sahel is more safari-esque than the beachy Al Yamm but both resorts deliver top-notch service. All three resorts (the only on the island) offer gorgeous restaurants and lively entertainment.
When our time at Al Yamm ended, we bid farewell to our feathered and furred island friends and took the ferry to meet our car for the trip to Anantara’s Qasr Al Sarab—a lavish oasis tucked in Liwa Desert’s Empty Quarter, the world’s largest uninterrupted body of sand. Aptly dubbed the Mirage Palace, the palatial fortress springs from the desert’s belly and is enveloped by thousands of years of intriguing traditions.
Our suite was fit for a sheikh and featured intricately carved wooden doorways, bronze chandeliers, and honed marble—all bathed in earth tones and indigenous fabrics. An immense terrace overlooked the soaring sand dunes and was a delightful spot to begin and end each day.
The resort’s desert landscape can be explored in a number of unique ways. An absolute must is the Camel Trekking adventure. After we climbed aboard our seated camel, this thrilling experience began with a bit of a jolt as our long-legged fellow uprighted himself. The ensuing ride was pure magic. At the end of our Camel Trek, we found ourselves atop an immense dune and were instructed to run down its side (absolutely thrilling) to a desert
gathering of sweet tea and dates. Swapping four legs for four wheels, we thoroughly enjoyed Dune Bashing as a highly skilled driver raced up, down, and even sideways over the dunes spraying sand in all directions. Guests who prefer to handle their own wheels should try the fat biking experience where a guide teaches the ancient art of “reading the sand.” This technique makes it infinitely easier to navigate the terrain. Sunset Dune Yoga is an ideal option for guests preferring less thrills and more Zen. Hunting enthusiasts and history lovers will relish a chance to interact with the resort’s falcons and Salukis, Arabian greyhounds, as the ancient art of falconry is explored. All guests—from thrill seekers to history buffs—will enjoy a trip to the resort’s heavenly spa for a relaxing culmination to a fascinating day.
Between adventures and spa rituals, we found time to indulge in multiple dining options. Whether it be a breakfast of international cuisine at Al Waha or a fragrant cup of mint tea in Al Liwan, the resort’s stunning lobby lounge, or a celebratory dinner at Suhail, the resort’s rooftop restaurant, every meal was memorable. For couples looking for the ultimate dinner date, the resort offers several romantic and unforgettable Dining by Design experiences set in the majestic dunes.
We left the UAE enriched by Arabian culture, schooled in its history, and gifted with memories of extraordinary adventures and truly spectacular landscapes. One of Anantara’s mottos is “Life is a journey”—their exquisite resorts make sojourns into foreign territories the perfect escape.

EXTRAORDINARY MICHIGAN AVENUE CONDOMINIUM RESIDENCES
An Evanston couple taps the expertise of architects Stuart Cohen and Julie Hacker to find a vintage dream home and help them renovate it for their family.
WORDS BY SHERRY THOMAS / PHOTOGRAPHY BY JON MILLER OF HEDRICH BLESSINGIf you’re a fan of HGTV, you know the popular series formulas about young couples who go on a house hunt and bring along the experts to help them see the potential they can’t see, and transform a diamond in the rough into the home of their dreams.
There were no cameras rolling when Stuart Cohen and Julie Hacker of Evanston-based Cohen-Hacker Architects LLC met a couple who wanted to relocate from the Lincoln Park area, but the process and outcome were very similar.
“We had been looking for a house in Evanston for almost one year prior to finally finding our house,” says the wife. “Wonderfully, Stuart and Julie worked with us during the process and helped us evaluate the rehab potential of the various homes we were seeing.”
It’s not always easy.
The Evanston housing market is booming so good finds don’t
stay on the market for long. Add to that the complication of purchasing a historic home in a historic district and the myriad restrictions and parameters that must be understood before embarking on any substantial renovation.
After touring many houses, the couple chose an 1896 Queen Anne Victorian built by architect John Jennings—who is noted for designing four other houses in Evanston, along with the original Lincoln School on Main Street.
“This home does fall in the historic district so it did have to go through the historic preservation commission,” Hacker explains. “I’m a commissioner so I know how difficult it is sometimes to get these things through.”
Many of the changes that were made during the renovation process included putting things back to the way they were originally, such as restoring the walls that separate a formal parlor from
a living room. But other choices were made to bring more light into the home and make it more functional for modern living.
“We took one bedroom on the second floor and added it into the master suite so we’d have enough space for a master suite and some closets,” says Cohen. “We also reconfigured some areas to create a laundry room on the second floor.”
Official bedroom count was reduced but as a result, more functional living spaces were created—including a big, open kitchen that opens to a formal dining room and a family room for the couple’s two children.
“The end result is a dream,” says the wife, “Our family adores our house, its natural light, the overall feeling, the attention to detail Julie and Stuart put into it, and its style. It was important to us that we had a home in which all the spaces were used. Julie and Stuart did a fantastic job of creating a use for each room and now, our house has the perfect place for us to live so happily—for our children to grow and for us to stay for years to come.”
Cohen and Hacker say that part of their mission with this project was to examine the original historic structure and evaluate all the boxy additions that have been made over the last century. As was common during certain generations, many “expansions” were poorly constructed, add-on rooms that were done without consideration of architecture or flow.
“There were some weird things that happened over time,” explains Cohen. “For example, to get to the kitchen and family area from the front of the house you had to go through a butler’s pantry.”
In the end, the architectural duo deconstructed and restored the old house into a modern home that blends old and new seamlessly. The final product not only made one Evanston family happy, but it secured Cohen-Hacker an AIA Small Projects Award and an Evanston Preservation Award in 2017.
“We had a great contractor and great young designer, Suzanne Klettzien who did all the furniture,” says Hacker. “It was a fun process. We’ve been doing this for a long time and there was good karma with this project.”
Cohen agrees. “It went very smoothly,” he adds. “We really enjoyed working with this couple.”
In keeping with the formula of home makeovers and happily ever after, the question of overall favorite must be raised.
The wife concedes that while they love every part of the restored home—particularly the new, light-filled kitchen that opens to the dining room—what stands out most of all is how Cohen and Hacker seemed to hone in on what they wanted in their dream home.
“Through this process, they were able to get to know us, our taste, style, and well before we ever realized it, they came to understand exactly what we wanted as a final product,” the wife says. “They also came to look at our former house. They wanted to see how we lived in it, which spaces we used, what we liked and didn’t like. We were really impressed that they would take the time to get to know us this way and couldn’t be more happy with how it all turned out.”
When former Lake Forest resident Amy Erb left her career in advertising to start her design firm, she had the vision of connecting her knowledge of design and architecture, which she gathered from studying at Harrington School of Design, and her extensive experience in managing blue chip clients in the corporate world.
Over the past 20 years, the Divvy House has done just that. With projects completed in the Chicagoland area, California, Colorado, Wisconsin, and Michigan, Erb credits their success to their client advocate approach: “My top priority when creating the Divvy House was to remain completely client driven. To do this, I priced us competitively and by the hour, leaving the client in control of time spent on our services. I also chose to pass along our trade discount, allowing for significant cost savings. Lastly, I implemented a design approach that prioritizes the taste and needs of the client, instead of adhering to a specific design taste or style.”
The most recent project completed by the Divvy House was for a long-time client who relocated from Chicago to Ross, California. “When our Gold Coast clients asked us to design their new home in Ross, California, I was hesitant at first given the distance—but everything is virtual these days and once we paired ourselves with an amazing architecture firm the process became, even more, turn-key. Especially since we had already successfully designed a
home for them in Lake Geneva. We were all so happy with the end product. We were able to bring the sophistication they loved from their Gold Coast home and combine it with the ease we designed for their Lake Geneva home, but also give it the California vibe with all new materials. Because of this, we were able to reuse furniture and fabrics and bring a lot of heritage and memories to their new home. We have been so fortunate to work with these clients over the last 20 years on original homes and then second and third homes—this is a testament to the strong, productive, trusting partnerships we have built with our clients to deliver dream homes since 2002,” Erb says.
Another priority when creating the Divvy House was to enlist a team with diverse styles and skillsets. The designer’s styles range from modern to traditional, enabling the firm to provide the best client/designer pairings.
With current projects underway in Lake Forest, Glencoe, and a fully custom design/build in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Divvy House is also expanding to bring on architect Robert Shemiot, who is returning to Chicago from the Bay area with over 20 years of residential and commercial experience. Shemiot will be joining Erb and the rest of her team including Brie Klaus, Brindy Hamstra, Alex Bishop, and Kathy Kroening.

Aerin Lauder joins Shelley Johnstone for an intimate dinner party at Johnstone’s Lake Forest estate.
WORDS BY ALLISON DUNCAN / PHOTOGRAPHY BY CYNTHIA LYNN SHERIDAN ROAD 100 Aerin Lauder and Shelley Johnstone chat poolside before dinnerInterior Designer Shelley Johnstone and AERIN founder Aerin Lauder were destined to be close friends. And after Johnstone caught Lauder’s eye by using pieces from Lauder’s luxury lifestyle brand in her design work, it was only a matter of time until the two found each other—on Instagram, of all places.
The two connected over their children, work, and their mutual loves for setting a pretty table and, this spring, Lauder visited Lake Forest, Johnstone’s home turf, for an AERIN trunk show at Johnstone’s North Shore studio and a private dinner at her home for Lauder, close friends, and clients.
More than 200 people shopped the trunk show, but only a select 10 joined for dinner in Johnstone’s recently renovated dining room, complete with purposely mismatched Royal Copenhagen china, vintage rattan dining chairs, and, of course, accessories from AERIN’s latest collection.
“Underneath each place setting was a question to ask Aerin, like her favorite male dinner companion, as she attends many high-profile events, and her favorite travel destination,” says Johnstone. “We were able to get to know a more intimate side of Aerin.”
Lauder’s favorite male dinner companion? Bradley Cooper, although both Lauder and Johnstone FaceTimed their sons during dinner. Favorite travel destination? The Amalfi Coast in Italy (Johnstone’s, too).
Guests indulged in risotto with tenderloin and lava cakes with raspberry sauce, and they each took home an AERIN raffia clutch holding a signature fragrance, a perfect complement to Johnstone’s long ivory gown with embroidered red flowers by Oscar de la Renta.
“To have Aerin come to my hometown is pretty special,” confides Johnstone. “I really respect Aerin for how hard she works and for the mother and friend that she is.”
Both Johnstone and Lauder are in the business of creating a beautiful lifestyle, which is evident through their work and friendship.

hen you look good, you feel good. That energy is sexy, gravitating, and totally captivating,” explains stylist Kristie Jorfald. “I teach my clients how to own that.” Jorfald herself radiates ease and confidence. Originally from Lake Forest, the future fashion authority grew up a citizen of the United States, Norway, and Switzerland. It was a household full of language, speaking Spanish with her half-Colombian mother and French with her dad. She attended Lake Forest High School before going away to college and securing internships with Hearst Magazines, first in Los Angeles and then in New York City.
In 2009 she landed in Los Angeles, officially embarking on her styling career, working with celebrities on the red carpet and magazine shoots, including Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland and Anna Kendrick of Pitch Perfect for Paper magazine. From there she landed a coveted assistant stylist gig on How Do I Look?, the two-time Emmy nominated makeover show.
Though she had a blast getting the celebrity experience in Los Angeles, she was soon feeling the pull back home. Jorfald returned to Chicago to pursue a master’s degree in elementary education at Columbia College, a longtime dream. After completing her thesis, she realized she was not quite done with styling, and set out to combine her passion for education and her love of fashion, teaching self-acceptance and a better understanding of self through style.
A wardrobe makeover with stylist KRISTIE JORFALD goes beyond the surface level into something altogether transformative, building confidence and body positivity one closet at a time.
WORDS BY ALICE YORK
After building an understanding of the Chicago market through work in personal shopping at Topshop and with private clients at Burberry, Jorfald took a chance on herself in 2016, building her own business as a personal stylist. “I’ve always been a huge risk-taker,” she reveals. Her goal: teaching women how to love their shape, how to shop for it, and how to build fearlessness through fashion.
Jorfald works primarily with women 45 and older, from public speakers and media personalities to successful surgeons, many going through divorce, stepping into executive roles, or ready to reinvent themselves, all ready to invest in their own lives. “Style isn’t vain, it’s taking time for yourself,” she explains. “It’s a form of self-care.”
Her process begins with a complimentary 30-minute discovery call followed by a digital questionnaire: “This helps me to identify where you are and where I’m going to take you,” she shares. “What are your short-term and long-term goals? What do you want to be known for through your style?”
Next comes the first appointment, the closet cleanse. “We go through everything, try things on, and determine what fits and what doesn’t. I take measurements to determine a client’s shape, not size, and look to see what could be tailored,” she explains. She works with a seamstress who will come by for a hem or tuck,
bringing new life to old pieces.
Jorfald helps the client determine what can be donated or what they can sell: “We all have money in our closet,” she says. Her photographer is on-hand to take pictures of all items that remain, which will be inputted into a digital look book of outfits based on the client’s lifestyle and schedule. This app serves as a closet inventory and handy guide that can be used while shopping, organized by category, size, and material.
From there she makes a list of staples, basics, and investment pieces that are missing, creating a style discovery board, comprised of different silhouettes and cuts across different categories, determining what to look for when they shop. Knowing that for many, a day of shopping can seem daunting, Jorfald helps remove the sting—and the guesswork—by pulling different items in advance, allowing it to be a full day of fun, with visits to 2 to 3 stores and a break for lunch together in between.
A third appointment includes fittings and photographs of the new items purchased. Jorfald puts together 10 outfits specific to the client’s life and its upcoming events: work presentations and conferences, weddings, vacations, and everything in between. Within 2 weeks she will create 30 outfit suggestions for the coming season.
For clients and followers alike, Jorfald also posts tutorials on Instagram, regularly sharing outfit ideas and advice. She graciously provided us with some insider tips and tricks:
• Buy your shoes at the end of the day: “At that point, you’ve been on your feet for hours, so you know how you’ll really feel in them.”
• A solution for overstretched jeans? Put them in a Ziploc bag and into the freezer for 24-48 hours. This will shrink the fibers, reshaping the denim back into its original size and also disinfect them.
• Fashion staples? “The trench coat, like the iconic cotton gabardine Burberry. It’s travel-friendly, transitions seamlessly from work to a night out, and works three seasons of the year,” she says. “And a nude pump: they go with everything and help to elongate the leg.”
• Invest in a classic stainless steel watch (“Don’t be afraid to mix your metals!”) and a handbag that combines form and function. Jorfald counts on her YSL shoulder bag to do double duty as a crossbody, and take her from day to evening. (“Look for something that gives you multiple options for styling and multiple compartments for utility.”)
• Never spend money on trends. Jorfald avoids pricey jeans, relying on options from Topshop and Nordstrom Rack instead. Another staple in her closet, the black leather jacket, she purchased from TJ Maxx (“It’s what I get the most compliments on”).

Ryan & Katie ParksHigh School in Winnetka. After getting his undergraduate degree at the University of Colorado at Boulder (where his wife attended and his oldest son now attends), he came back to Illinois and received his law degree with honors from Kent College of Law.
Sabath is the managing partner of the Lake Forest office for Berger Schatz, one of the nation’s largest law firms dedicated exclusively to matrimonial and family law.
His focus is on helping couples who are separating to resolve their issues collaboratively and amicably.
“You don’t want to be defined by your divorce,” Sabath says. “You don’t want to be the one at a party or event who just talks about their divorce.
Rather than viewing a breakup as an end, Sabath encourages clients to view it as a beginning to a new life.
“It’s really about helping people transition to the next phase of their life,” he says.
One of the keys to Sabath’s success is keeping people out of “the court system.”
“The legal system is not set up to address all of the issues involved when couples split up,” Sabath says. “My goal is to help clients resolve issues outside of the court system.”
He adds, “What you really want for a client is to resolve their matter early on and avoid the situation where you end up spending money to prepare for a trial and then settle on the courthouse steps.”
One of the advantages Berger Schatz offers is access not just to lawyers, but to accountants, financial analysts, and other professionals who need to be involved in the divorce process. The firm’s Lake Forest office also offers local access to residents of the North Shore, with the backing of its larger downtown Chicago office and lawyers who have a broad range of experience.
The firm handles divorces, premarital arrangements (such as pre-nuptial agreements,) surrogacy, paternity, and adoption.
“We rely on word-of-mouth for client referral,” Sabath says. “We do what we can to insure our clients are satisfied with our work and the outcome of their matter.”
In addition to his professional work, Sabath is involved in the Jackie Sabath Exhibition Fund at the Arts Center of Highland Park. Named after his late mother, the fund carries on her legacy with meaningful exhibits, social awareness, and educational outreach, including opportunities for underserved children to get involved in art activities.
“My mom was a phenomenal, outgoing person,” says Sabath. “My siblings and I set up the fund in her honor.”
Sabath and his wife also work with Equestrian Connection in Lake Forest, which provides horse therapy for physically and mentally challenged adults and children.
When Michael Sabath was in the 8th grade, his parents went through a contentious divorce. The experience left a deep impression. When it was over, he knew what he wanted to do for a career.
“I knew pretty early on I wanted to go into law and, in particular, family law—to make a difference,” Sabath says.
Sabath grew up on the North Shore and went to New Trier
With a senior at Deerfield High School and a junior at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Sabath focuses on family and that focus extends to his work.
“My goal is to help families resolve their issues so that, ultimately, they can share family events together,” he says.

As the 1990s were coming to a close, Barbara Bliss found herself a single mom with three young children and a stack of bills that needed paying.
She had worked for an architect earlier in her career and enjoyed the experience so she obtained her real estate license and began flipping houses. But the volatility in the real estate market eventually led her to seek more stable footing, so she purchased a Showhomes franchise in 2005.
Bliss found her calling.
Showhomes is a national home-staging company with franchises throughout the country. Bliss set up shop on the North Shore and she’s been killing it ever since.
“I can go into a house and visualize what it needs,” she says. “I have good intuition.“
With the real estate market becoming increasingly competitive, Bliss says getting a house staged is more important than ever.
“My favorite houses to stage are empty ones,” she says. “I love to just go in and take a house and start all over, stage it, and watch it sell.”
She adds, “The market’s been hit pretty hard here in the Midwest and you can’t leave a house empty because it won’t sell.”
Bliss’s franchise, which covers territory spreading from the North Shore to Barrington is one of the top performing Showhomes franchises in the country. She currently has 30 houses staged and sales volume has exceeded $175 million since she opened her doors.
One of Bliss’s top services is the Showhomes Signature Home Manager product. This unique twist on home staging is designed not just to stage a home, but to make it come to life. Homeowners get peace of mind and pay nothing upfront.
Bliss and her team will carefully stage a house and then bring in an executive to live in the home. The executive must pass a thorough screening process but pays below-market rent and maintains the house until it’s sold significantly faster with higher offers.
Executives might be transferees coming to the area for a new position, empty nesters, or people who’ve just sold their house and are in a transition.
“It’s really a win-win-win,” says Bliss. “For the homeowner, the home manager, and the realtor.”
She adds, “We’re on a really good run with the Home Manager program. It’s brought in significant revenue with the same great staging at a fraction of traditional staging costs paid at closing.”
Bliss has passed on her love of houses to the children she was raising on her own many years ago. Her daughter is an interior designer, and her two sons are a general contractor and a sales representative. She also stays active in the community, with the church, and works with a number of charities, including some that focus on children in need.
“It’s important for me to help those in need,” she says. “I’m grateful to be successful and passionate about giving back to my community.”
While the path from single mom to successful stager hasn’t always been easy—along the way she even went to school to get a business degree—she knows she’s in the right place.
“I’ve worked my tail off,” she says. “I’m grateful I’ve been able to provide for my family and the community.”

Each year patients ask questions about the flu season, the vaccine, and the current medical recommendations.
WORDS BY CHIRAG PATEL, MD PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANK ISHMANInfluenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness and seniors, young children, and those with certain health conditions are at higher risk of flu complications. The CDC estimates between 9.3 million and 49 million illnesses, between 140,000 and 960,000 hospitalizations, and between 12,000 and 79,000 deaths annually since 2010, due to influenza.
The key to staying healthy during flu season is prevention. The CDC advises that everyone age 6 months or older should get a flu vaccine every season. Immunity from this vaccine decreases over time, and the formula for the influenza vaccine is updated annually, depending upon the most active strains noted that year. The vaccine has historically been either trivalent (three-component) or quadrivalent (four-component), protecting against 3 or 4 viruses respectively. It takes about two weeks after vaccination to develop full immunity to protect against influenza.
According to the CDC, it is best to get the flu vaccine by the end of October each year, however, vaccination throughout the season can also be beneficial. Vaccine effectiveness does vary each year, however, according to Dr. Shilpa Patel, an infectious diseases specialist with Cook County Health, there are still many reasons to get a flu vaccine every year. “Flu vaccination has been shown to potentially prevent influenza-related illness, and reduce the severity of illness in those who become ill despite vaccination. Also, those who are vaccinated offer protection to others around
them; this becomes especially important for more vulnerable populations like babies and young children, older individuals, or those with compromised immune systems.”
For seniors living in senior housing or communities, this is especially important. A new study by the CDC published in the journal Open Forum Infectious Disease reports that people 85 years and older are at a much higher risk for hospitalization or even death and confirmed that H3N2 flu viruses are particularly dangerous to older people.
If you contract the flu, there are three drug classes recommended for influenza treatment including Neuraminidase Inhibitors, Cap-dependent Endonuclease Inhibitor, and Adamantanes. Consult a healthcare professional for the best suited and timely treatment.
Aside from the vaccine, I recommend prevention by good health habits to my patients, including avoiding close contact with those who may be ill. Stay home when you are sick or ill. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Wash hands and avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
Every season, many patients contract the flu. Promoting behavior for prevention, diagnosing the flu early, and implementing treatment efficiently has helped reduce flu-related complications. Please consult your physician during this flu season for the best recommendations to have a healthy remainder of 2019 and beyond.

WORDS BY MITCH HURST PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBARAs the former CEO of a successful computer advertising and design firm, Joanna Koperski brings a unique background to the world of real estate. She’s designed and executed advertising campaigns, court boards for lawyers, and renderings and building plans for architects, which led to an interest in real estate and interior design.
“My final choice to move into real estate was a perfectly natural convergence of everything I love and enjoy,” she says. “I offer my clients the advantage of years of business experience as well as a deep knowledge and understanding of competitive advertising and marketing.”
Technology has revolutionized the real estate business and Koperski’s technical knowledge offers a distinct advantage to her clients.
“Staying on the cusp of information and technology has always been paramount to my business model,” Koperski says. “To maintain my position on the cutting edge of this business, I stay as educated and informed as possible to best assist my clients with their specific goals.”
She adds that in today’s Internet-based market, the accurate interpretation of data is a major factor in helping clients make the right choices.
“I find great satisfaction in gleaning the most pertinent and accurate information for my clients’ ultimate success,” Koperski says.
She also understands that for her clients, the devil is often in the details.
“I bring an obsessive insistence on attention to detail and a persistent drive toward solutions,” she says. “It’s part of my basic skill set.”
She adds, “The drive to succeed and resolve issues have enabled me to bring my clients success where positive results seemed beyond reach.”
This attention to detail—driven by her advertising experience— translates into an ability to offer sellers alternatives to expensive staging and painting.
“Quality, not quantity, is my objective,” she says. “All of my clients are guaranteed my personal dedication and thoughtful attention based on their own individual situations.”
Koperski’s clients also benefit from her love affair with the North Shore community, which inspires her work.
“There is nothing more relaxing and invigorating than experiencing Lake Michigan’s shifting moods,” she says. “And inland, our well-designed and prosperous towns have from their onset been the haven for countless Chicagoans seeking a bucolic alternative to the constraints of city life.”
She adds that there’s no more exhilarating drive than up Sher-
idan Road in Evanston to the Wisconsin border, with its views of stunning properties and the lake shore.
“Easy access to all of our towns with the Metra and diverse highways offers a great opportunity to many seeking to meld the gentler rhythm of North Shore living with the prospect of working in Chicago,” she says. “It’s a choice my family happily made years ago.”
Most of all, Koperski finds satisfaction in helping families find a place to call home.
“This is an exhilarating business, forever changing,” she says. “There are so many wonderful people and every opportunity is different, every challenge is exciting. In the end, the greatest reward is the satisfaction of knowing that you have positively impacted so many lives. What a life!”

he challenge in plastic surgery is to achieve the optimal result with as little trade-off or risk as possible. Many plastic surgery procedures involve the reduction or tightening of loose skin. Common examples include abdominoplasties, facelifts, arm lifts, and thigh lifts. All of these procedures have one major trade-off and that is there is a scar. For many patients that trade-off is unacceptable. Wouldn’t it be nice if comparable results could be achieved without the cutting
and scarring of traditional procedures? In mild to moderate cases of skin laxity Renuvion offers a relatively safe and effective minimally invasive procedure to promote skin tightening.
Renuvion is often combined with ultrasonic liposuction to promote skin tightening. Liposuction in and of itself does not tighten skin and often liposuction alone can lead to some skin laxity and compromise the fine aesthetic result.
Renuvion is a cosmetic technology combining the unique properties of the helium plasma with a proprietary form of radiofrequency energy. The trick is always to sufficiently heat up the deep tissues to promote collagen tightening and elasticity without burning the overlying skin. Renuvion has a very shallow depth of penetration. It has a dual thermal effect where it provides unique heating with near-instantaneous tissue cooling. The delivery of energy beneath the skin and through the helium plasma allows a 360-degree energy application to all desired tissues in the subdermal space. The fibroseptal network beneath the skin can be effectively heated to promote contraction and tightening of the overlying skin. The full effect of this treatment can take up to six months to see. So basically tumescent fluid is injected into the area to be treated and Vaser ultrasound is introduced to emulsify the fat. Liposuction is performed if need be and the Renuvion is introduced to promote skin tightening.
TTo see if you are a candidate for this procedure, a consultation and an exam is required. As with any surgical procedure risks and possible complications will be discussed.

Now celebrating its 15th anniversary, Erika’s Lighthouse continues to shed light on adolescent depression through meaningful dialogue and an engaging curriculum.
Ginny Neuckranz shares its story and her hopes for the future of the organization she co-founded with her husband Tom.
WORDS BY ALICE YORK / ILLUSTRATION BY ROBERT RISKO“Out of darkness, a beacon.” When Ginny Neuckranz and husband Tom lost their teenage daughter, Erika, to suicide, they made it their mission to turn her su ering and their grief into hope for other families. It was in her name and spirit they founded Erika’s Lighthouse, a nonpro t based in Winnetka targeted at mental health awareness and education for teens.
“At that time, teachers were uncomfortable discussing mental health in their classrooms. People just weren’t talking about this,” Neuckranz shares. But, within a year or two of the formation of Erika’s Lighthouse, and curriculum that Ginny and Tom Neuckranz had sourced through extensive research, programming had spread across the “feeder” schools for New Trier High School, including the rst, Erika’s alma mater, Washburn Junior High. is campaign to bring attention to what was once considered a taboo topic was bolstered by Erika’s friends at New Trier, who were determined not to stand idly by: they did research, worked to educate classmates at a peer-to-peer level, and held a walkathon in her honor.
Erika’s Lighthouse eventually produced their own professional programming, a thorough and scienti c understanding of depression designed for middle school students, and a more sophisticated version adapted for their high school counterparts. “Our goal is to give kids the vocabulary to talk about this issue—talking about it openly removes stigma,” Neuckranz explains. “We want to harness the power of education and awareness to change a school’s culture around mental illness.”
rough the curriculum, students can watch a series of videos of fellow teens talking in their own words, which provides a clear picture of what living with depression looks like. “So many young people don’t understand what’s going on inside their minds or that of a friend. We want to demonstrate how to adopt and maintain healthy coping strategies. Depression is a mysterious illness, but there are so many ways to combat it,” Neuckranz says.
She encourages parents to hold the ag of hope for their children: “Encourage your children and model resiliency to them. Tell them, ‘We can get through this. You can do this.’” To teens she says, “You can create a positive school culture by modeling empathy and hope to fellow students. Believe in yourself. You can make change in the world.”
Starting from their early days around the kitchen table, this is exactly what Ginny and Tom Neuckranz have done. eir curriculum has since spread to 39 states and Washington, D.C., touching 111,000 students this past school year. It is currently being taught in 330 schools with a goal to grow that number by at least 25 percent over the next year. Neuckranz says, “ at’s what’s important for us, for as many kids to receive our free depression education
curriculum as possible.”
She attributes much of the growth they’ve seen to their newly redesigned website, allowing teachers and parents across the country and world to access their programming portal. Here teachers can sign up and utilize the curriculum and nd resources such as the parent handbook and mental health toolbox. is impactful education for schools, parents, and peers is completely free, removing any obstacles that could potentially keep a school from utilizing its lifesaving curriculum.
Now in its 15th year, the organization continues to move forward, this past June appointing new Executive Director Brandon Combs. “He has a wealth of experience in the nonpro t world and has so many great ideas for what’s next,” says Neuckranz, including an increase in teen involvement and leadership. “We are building toward being here another 15 years and beyond.”
