EDITOR’S NOTE
ABOVE: Edra Soto’s Casa-Isla/House-Island, part of a project to commemorate the Chicago Botanic Garden’s 50th anniversary. Soto has an upcoming show at Art & Artist feature ENGAGE Projects in October RIGHT: Le Colonial Lake Forest’s Market Square Manhattan
I THIS MONTH I WILL BE READING B. A. Shapiro’s Metropolis
STANDING Strong with Highland Park CONGRATULATING My husband on his national gold medal in the off-road duathlon
t is difficult to draft my note this month with such a heavy heart. The July 4th tragedy in Highland Park has touched us all on some level, and my heart aches for the victims and their families. I have seen a tremendous outpouring of support in the aftermath, which strengthens my belief in the greatness of our community. Sheridan Road has always celebrated the joy and good we create on the North Shore; this month I hope it offers a little lightness in the dark. Our cover highlights ENGAGE Projects’ Jennifer Armetta, who celebrates emerging artists from all over the world. Read about the gallery’s recent exhibitions in Art & Artist. Two features celebrate North Shore CEOs, who are expert connectors. Lake Forest’s Camille Fetter of Talentfoot is helping careers happen and companies grow, while Wilmette’s Aimée Eichelberger of Superior PR uses her storytelling gift to craft companies’ narratives. Our third feature is an anniversary toast to Skokie Country Club—a well-loved club saluting 125 years. We follow the features with two special sections, Dollars & Sense and Legal Leaders, showcasing the North Shore’s financial experts and premier lawyers. The Living & Giving section is packed with socials filled with residents celebrating remarkable organizations. Because of layout and space constraints, not all images from our photo shoots or events are included in the magazine. My hope is to start sharing these photos with you on Instagram— follow us @sheridanrdmag for the behind-thescenes scoop.
The issue concludes with sage words from William Blair’s Laura Coy. Laura sits on the board of the Illinois Holocaust Museum and shines a light on the Women’s Leadership Committee’s “The Soirée” on September 8 at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Mark your calendars as this is an event not to miss. I hope these last lazy days of summer are restorative for us all. Stay safe.

LE COLONIAL Le Colonial celebrates the vivid flavors and seductive spirit of Saigon in the 1920s. With locations in Chicago, Houston, Atlanta, and now Lake Forest, the famed Vietnamese restaurant is designed to capture a bygone era of sophistication and opulence. Heralded as “an escapist’s paradise,” celebrated restaurateurs Rick Wahlstedt and Joe King deliver exquisite attention to detail in a luxurious, classic, and romantic atmosphere in the iconic Market Square of Lake Forest. IMPRESSIONISTS North America’s preeminent immersive art experience returns to Chicago with another dazzling and inviting exhibit: Immersive Monet & The Impressionists. Presented by Lighthouse Immersive, visitors are submerged into the vibrant palettes of the Impressionist movement of the late 19th century. Timeless works elegantly fashioned by the likes of Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, and Auguste Renoir come alive as state-of-the-art technology effortlessly accentuates each brushstroke. Unlike Lighthouse Immersive’s previous exhibitions that highlighted specific artists, this new exhibit is an emphatic ode to the modernity and radicalism of the Impressionist era. The grand animations showcase pieces created by artists who transformed art innovation at the start of the 20th century, including J.M.W. Turner and Toulouse-Lautrec. For more information, visit lighthouseimmersive. com/chicago/.

Cory helped us buy our home and was our first call when it came time to sell. He was very helpful when we were making decisions on getting our home ready to put on the market. He helped us set the right price for our home so we could get a good offer and sell quickly. Our home was only on the market 3 days! We were moving out of state and Cory went above and beyond and found a great agent for us in our new state. - Rachel & Luke Fenner

Highland Park’s LESLIE RANDOLPH is on a mission to spread the love: self-love that is. A certified Life Coach and the Chief Wisdom Officer at The Coach Chronicles, Randolph helps women and teens know, love, and believe in themselves so they can live the life of their dreams. While there is no one-size-fits-all in the “life of your dreams” department, Randolph says a universal outcome from coaching is greater self-love and self-confidence. Randolph launched her coaching practice after spending nearly five years living in South Africa with her husband and two kids. While living overseas, she confronted the question so many of her clients today face: “what do I want to want?” To help her answer this question, she hired a life coach. And the rest is history. Coach Randolph shares her city and shore favorites with Sheridan Road. PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA HAIR & MAKEUP BY LEANNA ERNEST What’s on the horizon? ivorce is extremely expensive. The “expense” extends well beyond the cost of attorney fees. It is expensive emotionally, robs the parties of time and energy, and usually affects each member of the family. Approaching a divorce with the intention of resolving it amicably is best for everyone involved. Some lawyers claim that by fighting, the client will receive a better result. It is just not the case. The outcome of a hugely contested divorce versus a divorce resolved by agreement rarely deviates more than 5 percent. The biggest difference is the amount of fees. A medium-size divorce resolved by agreement costs 10 times less than a medium-sized divorce that goes to trial. In addition, an amicable divorce takes substantially less time, creates less stress, and allows the parties to move forward with less bitterness and resentment. This is always good but especially important when children are involved. Given these facts, the question remains: why doesn’t everyone choose an amicable divorce? Some people are so angry that they don’t make good choices. Other people have attorneys suggesting that litigation will provide them with a much better outcome. The client may have someone advising him/her who elevates the drama, distrust, and chaos rather than reducing it. Still, others want an amicable divorce but their soon-to-be ex-spouse refuses to be cordial. It’s important to find an attorney who can help you choose the right path. Select someone who will give you good counsel and keep things in perspective instead of heightening the conflict. Some attorneys handle only uncontested divorces. Other attorneys are aggressive, skilled trial attorneys. It is rare to find an attorney who will proceed amicably but has the necessary litigation skills in case it goes to trial. The search is worth it: proceeding amicably is much easier when the other side knows that if required, your attorney will go to court and achieve a fair outcome. A powerful attorney actually assists in an agreeable divorce by knowing the law, knowing what a reasonable outcome would be if they had to go to trial, and being able to negotiate a similar outcome without the expense of litigation. Divorce doesn’t have to be adversarial; you can make decisions to help avoid unnecessary drama, acrimony, and attorney fees. When interviewing a potential attorney, it’s important to ask questions that help you to determine if the attorney is both a skilled litigator and is willing to help you achieve an amicable resolution. he path that Jennifer Armetta, Owner and Director of Chicago’s ENGAGE Projects, took to becoming a gallerist was hardly direct. There were twists and turns, personal and professional, that she credits with leading to her most recent role. “Most of my family members were in the medical field,” shares Armetta, “and, since I always liked the sciences, I just sort of assumed that is where I would end up.” In her hometown of Minneapolis, however, a friend had a job at a local gallery and Armetta visited frequently. “That was really the start of my exposure to art and artists and my interest in the subject.” As an undergraduate at Boston University, she majored in art history. “I was hooked from my very first class, the Impressionists, Expressionists, and so on,” recalls Armetta. “Matisse was my favorite artist back then.” In the early 1990s, after completing her degree and with one of her two sisters enrolled at Northwestern University, Armetta decided to relocate to Chicago. She wanted the city life and, having grown up in the Midwest, felt the location and size would be a perfect fit. “I was fortunate from the start to meet a number of influential people
in the art world, both in galleries and museums, and to foster relationships with a couple of wonderful mentors.” After her move Armetta required a practical pivot for more financial stability, so she took a position as a pharmaceutical sales representative. “How to build a rapport with people, develop a sense of trust, obtain presentation skills, and think quickly on your feet—I acquired it all there,” she says, “and I use each and every one of those lessons in my business today.” While being careful not to stray too far from her love of the arts, she continued work on the side as an art consultant and artist advocate. In 2004, she helped found what was then called Verge, now known as Emerge, consisting of a group of collectors, curators, and art dealers seeking to bring more emerging artists into the permanent collection at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. Armetta is still a member and has served as Programming Chair on the Executive Committee. A few family-related moves between Los Angeles and Chicago’s North Shore offered yet another opportunity for a professional shift. Armetta joined an integrative marketing firm managing prominent national sponsorship events, including “Ferrari Fantasia” on Oak Street and a polo match at the Oak Brook Polo Club with

Prince Charles. During this time she also established her first gallery, Jennifer Armetta Fine Art, which focused on highlighting artists primarily from Minnesota and had considerable exposure on the coasts but not in Chicago. It was more recently during a visit to what was previously Aspect/Ratio Gallery, which focused mainly on video and performance art, that Armetta found herself finally ready to pursue her passion with full force. “The director was a long-time friend of mine, and when I stopped in one evening, he told me of plans to soon close. I called the very next day with a proposed agenda, and the rest, as they say, is history.” Armetta’s past had prepared her with the confidence to design a business and mission, the capacity to stage large-scale and collaborative exhibitions, and to be the “connector,” as she terms it, that she had long desired to be in the art arena. “I’m not interested in working with artists who don’t want to work with us, and that does not come from a place of ego, it is simply vitally important that we are in a partnership.” With a roster of emerging and mid-career artists, Armetta categorizes much of their creative content as conceptual art. “What that essentially means to me is the idea is greater than the gesture, the work is complicated yet beautiful, both literally and figuratively,” she explains. “I chose the name ENGAGE Projects because I wanted a verb, an invitation to interact with me and with artists, to emphasize participation rather than passivity. Even if people don’t want to buy, I want them to know a walk-in for a tour or conversation is always welcomed.” ENGAGE’s Summer 2022 shows sparked conversation by challenging the gallery’s patrons to consider the human cost of
outsourcing labor and the power of text. An exhibition entitled The Residue of Labor featured works by Minnesota artist Chris Larson, who was inspired by objects found in an abandoned garment factory in rural Tennessee. The windowless factory yielded elements like time cards, old sewing machines, and zippers that Larson repurposed into paintings, sculptures, and videos. The exhibition’s largest work Thread Room, an immersive experience for the viewer, was created from some of the 50,000 spools of thread found in the factory; thread 700 workers had once used to sew clothing for high-end clients like Ralph Lauren and Burberry before their jobs were outsourced elsewhere. Seeing Thoughts Through, a show described by the Chicago Tribune as “playful, improvisational, and inspiring” was the inaugural exhibition of Alberto Aguilar, a Chicago-born artist and educator at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Aguilar used the common graphics of commercial signs for an uncommon purpose: promoting dissent rather than BOGO sales. Armetta maintains a smaller permanent location for staff and a schedule of changing shows, along with a number of bigger offsite locations throughout Chicago and the rest of the country. The goal is to reach wider audiences, form deeper relationships, and respond to neighborhoods looking for art enrichment. “I think artists are incredibly brave, offering very personal work that they then put out for the world to view and judge, and that is not easy,” remarks Armetta. “My objective is to help people understand and find links to such work.” She is particularly excited to connect artists to Chicago’s

collectors because Armetta sees something special in Chicagoans’ distinct style of art appreciation and acquisitions. “They want the whole experience, to come see the show, meet the artist, and have an artwork delivered to their home to see how it communicates in a private surrounding—it’s fantastic.” In October, Armetta opens a solo show of the immersive work of Edra Soto, a Puerto-Rican-born artist and School of the Art Institute of Chicago MFA graduate, whose installations have been displayed globally and can be seen locally at the Chicago Botanic Garden and Millennium Park. The floating horizontal shapes of Casa-Isla | House-Island, part of a project to commemorate the Chicago Botanic Garden’s 50th anniversary, are an allusion to Puerto Rico’s island topography. “Almost every artist who we represent works to give back to our arts community in some way.” It’s a directive Armetta supports and celebrates, particularly given the commitment she feels to honoring those detours that made her own dream come true. GREEN WITH IVY After many years working in investment management, Wilmette’s ADRIANE MCKNIGHT felt the urge to step away from her desk and get her hands dirty while doing something creative. In 2019, she did just that—founding Green With Ivy, a custom four-season container gardening service for North Shore clients. Owning her own business allows her to combine the enjoyment of working with clients with losing herself in designing unique arrangements for containers, a skill she honed working under her mentor, Bridget Schroeder of the Contained Garden. A busy wife and mother of two teens, McKnight particularly enjoys the flexibility of the seasonal work. Along with family time, McKnight devotes her energy to the community. She and her faithful golden, Ollie, are certified volunteers with Paws for Patrick, an organization dedicated to helping kids and teens with depression and anxiety. Whether it’s visiting schools and therapy centers with Ollie or designing one-of-a-kind arrangements for her delighted clients, nothing gives McKnight greater happiness than bringing others joy. Here is how this green thumb stays on-trend.
“I prefer something quick and light during the busy planting seasons. I recently finished The Maid by Nita Prose in one sitting. It’s a perfect beach read. Molly, the protagonist, is a quirky yet endearing maid at an upscale hotel who finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery. The ending doesn’t disappoint. When I was contemplating starting Green With Ivy, a friend recommended Creative Confidence by Tom and David Kelley. It’s a terrific guide for those who haven’t quite unearthed their creative force.” IN HER EARBUDS “I’m a fan of many music genres but a sucker for pop. I’ve been listening to Dua Lipa quite a bit since seeing her in concert earlier this year with my daughter, Madelyn (first concert since 2019!). Her music is upbeat and perfect for a run or a walk with Ollie. My personal favorites are ‘Levitating’ and ‘Cold Heart.’ When at my desk designing for the upcoming seasons or catching up on paperwork, I’ll often listen to podcasts. I just started The Trojan Horse Affair and it’s been hard to turn off !” ON HER MOBILE Adriane McKnight wearing ALC sundress and Valentino straw hat, Neiman Marcus Northbrook

“No matter how busy I am, I don’t get out of bed in the mornings without first reading the Daily Skimm, which keeps me up to date on happenings in the world. I always sneak a quick peek at Instagram to see what’s trending with my fellow gardeners. My favorite locals: @thecontainedgarden (of course!), @plantparenting, @urbanoasiscontainers, and @homegrowncontainerco. f the many juicy fruits that come with summer’s bounty, red plums are among my favorites. A simple galette is an easy way to highlight them. The word galette—French for “flat cake”—originated in the 14th century, and over the centuries the term has been applied to a wide array of sweet and savory treats, all baked on a flat, round crust. This red plum galette is a free-form pie with some almond flour added to the dough for a pleasantly flavored crunch. A light glaze of apricot preserves adds to the golden glow of the fruit. You can make this with other plum varieties or even fresh peaches. This versatile dessert tastes delightful when served warm with a dollop of vanilla ice cream or when served chilled and topped with crème fraiche.
METHOD For galette crust: Sift almond flour, all-purpose flour, sugar, and salt into a wide shallow bowl. Cut in the unsalted butter until mixture resembles wet sand with some bits of butter still visible throughout. With a fork, stir in just enough ice water for mixture to start clumping together. Spread work surface with two overlapping pieces of plastic wrap. Tip crust mixture onto plastic. Gather up plastic around the mass and knead through the plastic to form a ball of dough. Spread plastic back onto work surface. Flatten dough into a round disk. Cover with two more overlapping sheets of plastic. Roll out into an 18-inch circle. Transfer crust with plastic sheets still intact, to a flat baking sheet or large, flat, and round pizza pan. Refrigerate for 15 minutes.
For filling: Preheat oven to 400 degrees with oven rack set to center position. esperate to escape the Midwest winter, we searched for an easily accessible beach destination and found just the place at the all-inclusive Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit. Boarding the plane at O’Hare early in the morning, we arrived at the resort just in time for a late beachside lunch. The Vela brothers, who believe in the art and passion of hospitality, own and operate the Velas Resorts. In 2002, the brothers opened the portfolio’s second property—a retreat located on Banderas Bay and a quick drive from Puerto Vallarta’s airport. Reinventing the all-inclusive concept, the “Velas Vacation Experience” embodies exceptional dining, expansive suites, and luxury service. The brother’s vision has been well received as the Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit is the only all-inclusive resort in the Mexican Pacific to be awarded Five Diamonds by AAA.

Beachside cabanas
Upon arrival, we entered a palatial lobby where beautifully attired staff delivered cool beverages, warm towels, and a head and neck massage. I have visited places all over the world, but I have never experienced a welcome massage—something every weary traveler craves. This trio of pleasures is the perfect antidote for jet lag. Walking to our room, we found a large carved wooden door that opened to reveal an expansive suite with an ocean view. Waiting for us on the desk was a fun Grand Velas touch—a Mezcal Kit. The elaborate display included Velas’ own Olvídame Si Puedes mezcal, a drink recipe, glasses rimmed in Tajin (chili salt), orange slices, and an array of dark chocolates. A welcome note encouraged us to sip the mezcal during our stay or take the bottle home as a memento. A woman we met at an early morning yoga class was traveling with her family and stayed in the two-bedroom family suites. The
accommodations provided the perfect balance for her—allowing the family to stay together while providing ample room for privacy for her and her husband. The spacious accommodations, over 2,000 square feet, featured one king bedroom connecting to a suite with two queen beds, a private terrace with ocean views, and 24-hour Suite Service. Her children adored the additional amenities including stuffed animals resembling the resort’s mascot “Pancho,” bathrobes and slippers in special mini sizes, and a kids’ welcome beach package. Although I traveled with my friend and not my family, we both marveled at the resort’s family-friendly ambiance. We couldn’t get over the “cuteness” of the adorable mini beach cabanas for wee travelers or the pint-sized hooded towels featuring the resort’s beloved mascot. We wondered why the resorts of our children’s youth didn’t offer something similar to the Baby Concierge, stateof-the-art Kids’ or Teens’ Clubs. The Baby Concierge coordinates everything from a crib, toys, and bottle sterilizer to bouncers, strollers, and highchairs. The Kids’ Club (for ages 4 to 12) and Teens’ Club (for ages 13 to 16) offer a plethora of entertaining activities, including arts and crafts, outdoor games, video gaming booths with big screens and seats with built-in speakers, various table games such as foosball and air hockey, lounge areas to relax, and more. The Teens’ Club was so cool that I am not sure even the beauty of the Pacific Ocean could entice the occupants away (however, as we all know, a happy teen is a happy family). If traveling with a family, there is no reason to leave the property as there is something to delight any age or interest. My friend and I never felt the need to leave either—with the six restaurants, spa, beach, pools, and activities (our favorites were beachside yoga and lounging in the beach cabanas), we felt every desire fulfilled.

Lucca restaurant
DINE & IMBIBE The Grand Velas’ modernly appointed restaurants include four gourmet options that take you on a mouth-watering journey through Mexico, Europe, and Asia and two open-air beachfront eateries. On our first night, we celebrated by taking a mixology class. Our mixologist introduced us to the magnificent creation dubbed “Golden Ranch Water.” Twenty-four-karat edible gold flakes danced in a tequila bottle as the master mixologist poured “liquid gold” into a glass, adding fresh lime, jalapeno, Topo Chico sparkling mineral water, and Tajin—we sipped the sparkling, spicy concoction beneath the sun and couldn’t imagine a more perfect introduction to the evening. We also learned about a Hibiscus Mezcaltini—an incredibly delicious combination of mezcal, hibiscus, and cinnamon. These mixology classes serve beverages alongside tales of Mexican culture and reflect the resort’s desire to keep things exciting for its well-traveled and culinary-driven guests. Ready for a little food in our stomachs, we headed to Frida, named in honor of famed Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo, for modern Mexican fare in an elegant setting with beautiful ocean views. We started with a fig salad – caramelized figs with green tomatoes on a bed of spinach bathed in a bittersweet tamarind-mint vinaigrette with toasted pistachios and a touch of parsley. My main course presented a large plate full of giant spicy shrimp in a garlic,
Golden Ranch Water - tequila infused with 24 karat edible gold flakes
blackened green sauce with sweet potato puree in smoked chili, and sautéed vegetables. I just had to try the churros with chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream—the dessert was worth every single calorie. That night we slept like kings. On our final evening, we ventured to Piaf for its classic French menu. The cheese plate was plentiful and delicious. We followed this with a French onion soup topped with Gruyere cheese. For our main course, we had a mahi-mahi filet over mussels, shrimp, and a chorizo ragout, with bisque and saffron emulsion. The entire meal was très bon! Our post-dinner libations were often enjoyed at the resort’s nightclub, KOI where the juxtaposition of sleek modern décor and ‘80s music videos was intoxicating and transportive. Breakfasts were enjoyed oceanside where we chose from an endless array of delicacies at the bright and airy Azul restaurant.

SPA Saving the best for last, we visited Se Spa by Grand Velas. Forbes Travel Guide has awarded the spa Five Stars—one of only nine spas in Mexico to receive the distinction. The 16,500 square-foot Se Spa is the resort’s crown jewel. The spa’s design includes a palapa-style entrance, furniture from Bali, and a large marbled wall with cascading water. The seven-step Water Journey guided by a personal spa valet entailed an hour-long relaxation/purification ritual built around the use of seven specially designed water-based facilities. After this delightful experience, I was guided past 20 treatment rooms to my destination for a Grand Cora massage. This highly energetic massage stimulates sensorial perception through a sound ritual using natural instruments—think enchanting drums and vibrating bells. With the application of warm ginger oil, all tension drained away restoring my emotional and spiritual wellness. Even after 90 minutes, I was reluctant to rise from the table.

CASA VELAS If you are looking for an adults-only alternative in Puerto Vallarta, try the Casa Velas resort just a short drive away. The resort is an all-inclusive boutique hotel featuring 80 suites nestled on the grounds of the Marina Vallarta Golf Club. Giant iguanas stroll the golf course occasionally encountering a toothy companion as gators like to sun on the course’s rolling hills. Although not on the ocean, guests have access to the Táu Beach Club set on the white sands of the Pacific Ocean with an infinity pool, dining, and event space. ¡Viva México! In a home built for a lively family, En Masse Architecture and Design balanced privacy and practicality with a fresh sensibility and a desire to bring the outdoors in.

WORDS BY ANN MARIE SCHEIDLER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE SCHWARTZ hen a Winnetka family approached Chicago’s En Masse Architecture and Design, their hope was to build a modern home that fit with the more historic architecture of their charming North Shore neighborhood. They were specifically attracted to Shingle Style homes—not wanting anything stodgy or overly traditional. So, the En Masse team decided to set the tone for the overall design project with a bold move. “We suggested locating a wet bar front and center in the entry hall,” says Lucas Goldbach, AIA, En Masse Design Director and Partner. “This set the mood for the entire house and imbued it with a sense of personality from the start.” En Masse [formerly called Mike Shively Architecture] was founded on the principle of making life better through architecture. To this end, every project begins with a deep dive into a cli-
ent’s wants, needs, ideas, and inspirations. From there, an iterative design process begins where all relevant information is gathered over a series of phases. These included design, documentation, permitting/bidding, and site observation. “At every stage, our process is collaborative,” Goldbach explains, who oversaw this project with En Masse founder Mike Shively. “Throughout each and every step of the design, we are engaging with and building a community around the project. Collaboration with designers, contractors, fabricators, village officials, and the client allows for a rich process and establishes a team that is greater than the sum of its parts.” From the start, the En Masse team was under a tight timeline that allowed just 10 months for construction. “We quickly had to collaborate with the general contractor, The Huff Group, interior designer, Cat Walsh, and the client to establish a design, document it, and have a permit issued by the village,” Goldbach explains. “The other challenge was adhering

to the zoning code. While we must do this on every project, we have to pay careful attention to the design, the client’s ambitions for the project, and what’s allowed by the village to make sure everyone is being heard. Through a clever tweaking of ceiling heights and structural details on this project, we were able to add an intimate study with a balcony to the home’s third floor while adhering to the zoning requirements.” Daughter’s bedroom En Masse worked closely with interior designer Walsh from the beginning. “Integrating the interiors with the architecture is essential to a successful project,” Goldbach adds. “We consulted with Cat to make sure that the details, materials, and quality of construction lived up to our client’s expectations. We love the input from other talented design professionals and the expertise that we share leads to the best collaborations and projects.” According to Goldbach, it was crucial that the home’s design leveraged the amount of light it takes in. “No matter what the time of year or what the weather is outside, as architects we strive to create light, bright, warm, and
inviting spaces,” he says. “The back elevation of this home demonstrates this. The family room, breakfast area, kitchen, and study feature large expanses of windows. This allows the home’s interior to be bright throughout the year.” These windows, along with the “H-shape” of the floorplan, offer a sense of privacy from the neighbors. Instead of views of the neighboring properties, there are views to and through other parts of the home. “The intimate dining terrace at the center of the house creates a space for coming together and family life,” Goldbach says. “This project is a great example of how a home can feel open and connected without creating huge, cavernous spaces. This home features connected and overlapping rooms that allow each to have their own vibe and sense of intimacy. Despite the separation, there are still long sightlines that lead you through the house and allow the parents to keep a close eye on their young children. This truly contributes to the house’s character and sense of warmth.” The final result: an overjoyed family with a house that melds well with the neighborhood’s stately homes, while offering a more light-filled, modern flow through the use of well-placed windows on the exterior elevation. “The design of a home can help create the kind of life a family wants to have,” Goldbach says. “I believe that is exactly what we achieved with this design.” To learn more about En Masse Architecture and Design, visit designenmasse.com.

PLANNING FOR A SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL YEAR “How do I make sure my student starts the new school year off right?” Matthew Pietrafetta, Ph.D.
WORDS BY MATTHEW PIETRAFETTA, PH.D.
F
or more than 20 years, this has been a key question asked by parents preparing their students for academic success. While each student requires a personalized plan, we have some general advice on a strong start to the new school year.
To start off strong, keep 3 things in mind: • Avoid surprises. Scan the school calendar for critical testing events. Students must be focused and prepared. • Make a strong first impression. Strong starts lead to successful ends. • Get feedback. Seek teacher feedback early and often; learn from it; adjust; succeed. Academic Approach works with families to help them meet these goals and many more by creating a customized learning plan for students and coaching them to achieve great outcomes both on standardized tests and in the classroom. Plan for High Stakes Tests Sometimes high stakes tests or grading periods sneak up on us. They’re in public calendars but are often easy to miss: • Seniors still have two official test dates for ACT & SAT retesting before early decision deadlines for college applications. But registration deadlines are 4 to 5 weeks prior to the official test. • The 11th grade October PSAT is the one chance to qualify students as Commended Scholars or National Merit Semifinalists. A feather in the cap, if earned. • 7th or 8th grade MAP test performance can determine the math level a student will track on into high school. • Critical time periods at the end of the semester often provide windows for students to submit test corrections or extra credit assignments. Carefully review school calendars, ask questions, and help your students understand what’s coming next. Proper preparation before high stakes tests makes a significant difference in performance. First Impressions Twenty five years ago, while teaching in the Core Curriculum at Columbia University in New York City, I learned a lasting lesson about successful students: the ones who start strong finish well. I taught a mandatory freshman writing course, requiring 19 essays in one term. It was a lot to manage, and the students who
impressed me most were those who from the outset came regularly to my office hours, sought feedback, applied that feedback, and handed in improved essays. They showed they cared; they applied my guidance; and they established a rapport with me, their teacher. It was a simple formula, but I’ve seen how challenging it can be for students to apply it. Many students are still developing self-advocacy skills and feel awkward engaging teachers. However, students can be coached to take this approach. Attend the first office hours a teacher offers. Ask two simple questions: What makes a student most successful in your class? • • How should I prepare for the important tests and assignments this term? Teachers want students to succeed. When they are engaged as allies, they offer help, clarity, and guidance. Feedback Leads to Improvement Feedback is hard. We know that as adults; it’s even harder for our children. However, effective feedback always leads to improvement. Students need to learn to not only accept feedback but also seek it out. Parents too. If progress is off track, you want to learn that as quickly as possible. Students should take their first quiz or test results seriously, read teacher’s notes and feedback, and respond by making changes. Parents should look for these signs: the student’s impression of teachers; the first grades or quizzes back; and, most certainly, the first parent-teacher conference to understand how the student is progressing. Strong Starts & Successful Finishes At Academic Approach, we recognize that strong starts lead to successful finishes. Therefore, we provide complimentary consultations to help families think through priorities, assess learning needs, and tailor a tutoring plan and timeline for each student’s ultimate success. We will help you navigate the road ahead, plan for success, and guide your student through a program of learning that drives improved test scores, academic outcomes, and college readiness. usiness success doesn’t come easy. You need to feel the pulse of the marketplace, you need to anticipate and pivot. And of course, be at the right place at the right time. Sometimes, that requires a little assistance. That’s where Camille Fetter comes in. Founder and CEO of Talentfoot Executive Search & Staffing, Fetter has been connecting expert, inventive, and ambitious individuals with challenging and rewarding careers for over a decade. Based in Chicago—with a team of 50 associates operating across the country—Talentfoot specializes in matching top marketing, sales, technology, human resources, and operations talent with high-growth digital-centric businesses—from Series B-funded startups to Fortune 50 advertising and marketing agencies—to partnering with private equity and venture capital firms. “At Talentfoot,” says Fetter, “we define our success by our ability to change lives for the better—for the employers who trust us to hire the right talent to grow their businesses, and for the job seekers
who depend on our ability to match their talents and desires with the right position, culture, and leadership team.” Raised in Lake Forest, where she returned after more than a decade in the city and now lives with her daughter, Fetter began her own career in media planning at the advertising agency, Kelly Scott Madison. At the time, digital advertising was just beginning to take off and she was soon hooked. “I had the opportunity to learn and understand this new form of media consumption that was quickly changing life as we knew it,” she recalls. “My passion for digital marketing evolved into my passion for digital business.” Her professional transition began when she joined a recruitment firm, working first in staffing, and then in executive search. She loved being a “corporate matchmaker” and started to think about taking this passion to another level. “Over the course of my career, while working with investors and high-growth digital startups in Silicon Valley, I was extremely fortunate to study scores of extraordinarily successful entrepreneurs by partnering with them to scale their businesses. This gave me the confidence to believe I could also start a business, build a brand, and take it to scale.”

“The workforce continues to change at an unprecedented pace. Our job is to not only keep up with this pace but to stay ahead of it.”
Fetter launched Talentfoot in 2010 and like any professional worth her salt, has responded expeditiously to new industries, metamorphosing business models, and ever-evolving client expectations. “The workforce continues to change at an unprecedented pace. Our job is to not only keep up with this pace but to stay ahead of it,” she says. “In doing so, we created Indigo, our exclusive, invite-only C-suite membership network that we believe is poised to disrupt executive search by being the first of its kind to leverage matchmaking, executive search, board, and advisory services in one platform. Indigo represents Talentfoot’s next great leap forward by matching our C-suite members with the country’s most coveted jobs, board, advisory, and networking opportunities that will enable leaders to build their legacies. It gives employers access to an exclusive network of leaders meticulously vetted for their ability to drive top-line growth.” While committed to the success of her business and the success of others, Fetter never forgets to consider all the other variables that constitute living a fulfilling, purposeful, and meaningful life. For her that includes travel, learning about other cultures, staying active, exploring Chicago’s art and music scene, uncovering holein-the-wall restaurants, and catching a Cubs game. And when it comes to her clients, she always keeps the big picture in mind. “The bulk of our work is helping organizations identify and lure proven talent with a track record of accomplishing exactly what the business needs to accomplish. In order to lure these top performers, we must be able to offer advancement, more fulfillment, and an opportunity that will help them achieve their personal and professional goals. We move families across the country to be closer to loved ones, change lives with equitable opportunities that drive tremendous long-term wealth, bestow flexibility so they can make their kid’s sports games—the list goes on. We show people the possibilities and just like any matchmaker, put them in touch with the right leaders and organizations that will help them reach their fullest potential.” For more information, visit talentfoot.com. SUPERIOR STORYTELLER The narratives continue to flow for Wilmette’s Aimée Eichelberger, whose second chapter as a public relations CEO follows years as a broadcast journalist. WORDS BY BILL MCLEAN / PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES GUSTIN STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA / HAIR & MAKEUP BY CATHLEEN HEALY

he television news anchor in Aimée Eichelberger still pulsates—18 years after she left the broadcast industry. Now a Wilmette resident, mother of three, and public relations maven, Eichelberger, 42, sits at a table in Winnetka’s Hometown Coffee & Juice on a rainy afternoon. It’s dreary gray outside but San Diego sunny inside, thanks mostly to Eichelberger’s animated countenance as she begins to tell another engaging story to a rapt audience of one. Her eyes dance. Her smile widens. Her voice is pitch-perfect, every third or fourth word receiving the inflection treatment. “My third-grade teacher at Range Line Elementary (in Mequon, Wisconsin), Miss Coleman, was fond of the arts, all of them,” recalls Eichelberger, who founded Superior Public Relations, Inc., in 2013, serves as its CEO, and now thrives as an off-camera storyteller for grateful clients. “Miss Coleman encouraged me to write, to create stories, and I loved everything about the process. Still do. I can see her, hear her. She inspired me. I auditioned for a role in The Sound of Music because of Miss Coleman. You don’t forget a teacher like that,” she explains. Years later Eichelberger became news editor of The Highlander, Homestead High School’s newspaper, and interned for the NBC-TV affiliate in Milwaukee—her first of several unforgettable internships in broadcast media first as a high school student and later as a University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW) journalism major. Others included camerawork on the set of the public television show Sewing with Nancy and producer duties with CBS News in New York, where she worked with The Early Show host Gretchen Carlson, who would serve as a host on Fox News’s Fox & Friends from 2005 to 2013. Eichelberger earned her first dollar in the industry in Missoula, Montana, after landing the position of general assignment reporter following her graduation from UW. A year later she returned to Wisconsin for a two-year stint as a weekday reporter/weekend news anchor in La Crosse. Her three-part series on homelessness in the western Wisconsin city enlightened folks. “It also surprised many,” Eichelberger says. “They had no idea how extensive homelessness was in La Crosse.”
“What I loved about PR then, and still love about it now, was getting the opportunities to tell companies’ stories.” A tragic story about the deaths of a mother’s two daughters in a house fire precipitated Eichelberger’s exit from the news game at the age of 24. “The ‘if it bleeds, it leads’ way of thinking in news programming upset me,” Eichelberger admits. “I was told to ask the mother questions, on-air, that would provoke the most emotional responses from her. I just didn’t feel right, didn’t feel comfortable, doing that sort of interviewing.” Eichelberger is a fourth-generation small business owner— daughter of Rick (former CEO of a successful manufacturing business based in Franklin, Wisconsin) and Renee Balsley. Eichelberger credits her father for inspiring her to take the leap into entrepreneurship and says he is an ongoing mentor for her. After her time in broadcast in Wisconsin, Eichelberger moved to Charleston, South Carolina, to be near her future husband, North Shore native and former UW hockey star John Eichelberger, who, in 2000, had been drafted in the seventh round by the Philadelphia Flyers and was playing for a minor league team in the Palmetto State. After injuries derailed John’s promising professional hockey career, the couple headed west to relocate to California and start new vocations. But Eichelberger got an early jump on her second career—somewhere in Colorado. “John was driving as I was looking at my phone,” she recounts. “I turned to him and said, ‘Guess what? I just got a job offer from a PR firm in San Francisco.’” She took it. Eichelberger represented tech start-ups, initially as an account executive and ultimately as a vice-president during an impactful four-year tenure. Confident and fearless, she was a natural in

PR and found success on Day One, maybe in Hour One. The rookie’s number of media hits, right off the bat, impressed her superiors. Eichelberger summoned the storyteller in her, not having to dig deep. The narrator was still eager, still sharp, still vibrant. “What I loved about PR then, and still love about it now, was getting the opportunities to tell companies’ stories,” Eichelberger says. “Storytelling—my favorite part of working in news—is such a huge part of public relations. You find something compelling about a client and then present it clearly in a way that will help the company grow and achieve success as a result of increased buzz and brand awareness.” She aced other PR gigs before she and John got married in 2007. It was a destination wedding, with a twist—most of their guests didn’t have to travel far for the nuptials, while the couple flew from California to Wisconsin to become Mr. and Mrs. They now have three children: Clara, 11; Etta, 9; and Bobby, 7, a center in hockey like his father. Dad Eichelberger is one of Bobby’s Wilmette Jr. Trevians Hockey coaches. Eichelberger was Superior PR’s lone employee (the firm’s solopreneur) for the first four to five years; she now oversees a team of 10, with 14 tech start-ups as clients. Superior PR delivers a full suite of services to help businesses develop their stories and effectively communicate them to the marketplace. Superior PR bills itself as “fearless, creative, and as
agile as the companies it represents.” “I’m big on work-life balance, and I practice what I preach,” says Eichelberger, who ran the 400-meter dash for the Homestead High School track team and now jogs and works out regularly. “I tell my staff, ‘Remember, this is PR, not ER.’ Everyone works hard and from home, but there’s more to life than what you do for a living. So much more. It’s truly fun for me, to raise my children. I’ve told my employees, ‘Go to your kid’s soccer game.’” That approach appealed to Superior PR Account Director Allison Stecko when she was hired a little more than a year ago. “Aimée has a great attitude about everything,” says Stecko, a Winnetka native and 1998 New Trier High School graduate. “She has never had an ‘off ’ day. She’s on, always on. What also impresses me about Aimée is her ability to look over tons of information—sometimes complicated info—organize it, and then make it readable for a mainstream audience.” “Aimée,” Stecko adds, “is incredibly smart, a fantastic writer, and I know her background as a newscaster benefits our clients greatly. She truly works hard and efficiently to see to it that our start-ups get to that all-important next step.” Sounds like this second chapter is bound to have a happy ending. This group of bold-face names—to name a few—have enjoyed golf at Skokie Country Club, nestled in Glencoe on 122 bucolic acres, just blocks west of Green Bay Road and south of the village. Celebrating its rich heritage, Skokie Country Club marks its 125th year with highlights including the aptly named Blue & White Gala—in honor of the Club’s colors—the dedication of a memorial clock, and the debut of the Club’s updated history written by former Club president Don Potter.
With an auspicious start in 1897 with the Clubs’ Articles of Incorporation, Skokie Country Club became the fifth private golf course in Chicago; its history is intertwined with venerable area clubs including Lake Forest’s Onwentsia, Highland Park’s Exmoor, and Golf ’s Glen View Club. Skokie’s founders were an accomplished group of civic and business leaders that included Village Presidents from both Glencoe and Winnetka ( James Calhoun and Arthur Jones), a U.S. Secretary of the Interior (Walter Fisher), Winnetka’s largest landowner (George Higginson), and the leader of the North Shore Democratic Party (Heaton Owsley), along with other notable founders such as Fredrick Greeley, George Orde, George Leslie, and John Flanders.

In October 1897, James Calhoun and his eight partners drafted a proposal for Skokie Country Club, taking its name from the description of land used by the Native American Potawatomi tribe—“Chewab Skokie,” which translates to “big wet prairie.” According to Don Potter’s History of Skokie Country Club, edited by Andy Langan, early efforts more than achieved the initial goal of attracting 100 new members during the club’s first year of operation. By May of 1898, there were 117 Charter members; in the fall of that same year, membership grew to 149. The “crown jewel” of Skokie is arguably its famed 18-hole course, widely regarded as one of the area’s best. It’s been said that hallmarks of a great course are top-notch planning, varied holes, a reasonable challenge, and natural beauty—Skokie has these in spades, with its design featuring the work of some of the most renowned course architects including Tom Bendelow (1904); Donald Ross (1913) for whom the Club Bar is named, and William Langford and Theodore Moreau (1938). This year marks the centennial celebration of Gene Sarazen’s 1922 win of the U.S. Open at Skokie Country Club. Sarazen, winner of four major championships, won the U.S. Open at the age of 20 by one stroke, over Bobby Jones and John Black. His celebrated shot was on Skokie’s 18th hole where he got on the green in two and made a birdie, landing a 68. Today, a plaque memorializes this historic shot. Later becoming the “face of Skokie Country Club,” Sarazen would return most notably for the club’s 100th anniversary in July 1997 at the age of 95. The “Sarazen Cup” is Skokie’s fall event where the winning team is awarded badges to the Master’s Tournament in Augusta, Georgia, compliments of Gene’s daughter, Mary Ann Sarazen, an honorary member of the club. In addition to the U.S. Open in 1922, Skokie played host to the Women’s Western Open in 1952; the U.S. Open section qualifying events in 1959, 1973, and 1990; the Illinois Open in 1965; the U.S. Senior Open Qualifying in 1988, the CDGA Match Play Championship in 1992; and the Western Amateur in 2010 and 2017.
Perhaps the most meaningful guidepost for Skokie is its Creed, which reads: “Skokie Country Club’s primary objective is to be a premier, family-oriented social and recreational club distinguished by its collegial and active membership, friendly and welcoming atmosphere, and superb facilities.” In addition to highly acclaimed tennis, paddle, and swimming facilities, the Prairie Style Clubhouse’s dark wood and twin fireplaces, described as “quietly elegant,” offer dramatic and gracious focal points that beckon members, families, and guests during the holidays and throughout the year. Outdoor dining on the veranda, overlooking the golf course, offers stunning sunset views and a dynamic, picturesque respite for members and guests. Skokie’s members support employees through its Skokie Country Club Educational Foundation, awarding collegiate and vocational scholarships; members also contribute to the Evans Scholars Scholarship Foundation, with more than 30 full university scholarships awarded to Skokie’s caddies, including a dozen in the past decade. According to former Skokie Country Club President Don Potter, the focus is squarely on family. “This is a family club. Our three daughters were married here; my wife’s cousins were members. We know that membership here at Skokie is a privilege, and we want to safeguard this special place for future generations.” “Here at Skokie, we’re neighbors—and that’s very important to us. While our members have diverse backgrounds and a wide array of professions, we agree on one thing: this is a place for families,” says Heritage Committee Member Adam Kelly.

JIM PERKINS CEO, MANAGING MEMBER QUANTUM PRIVATE WEALTH
“Wealth is the inflection point where you evolve—from just making money to making money do things for you, your family, and ultimately your legacy,” says Lake Forest’s Quantum Private Wealth’s CEO Jim Perkins. “Fiduciary bespoke asset management is the future,” he adds. And Perkins should know. An industry veteran with more than 35 years’ experience at the likes of Bear Stearns, Deutsche Bank, and UBS, Perkins has seen a lot of industry changes. “The investment world is evolving, and Quantum is evolution. Clients should and are looking for more than what the institutionalized firms can offer. In the past as a Managing Director and Senior Portfolio Manager I worked with entrepreneurs and high achievers; finding that often their needs extended beyond what was readily available,” Perkins explains. “I wanted to offer them tailored unbiased advice and service. Running a boutique firm gives me the chance to do so AND make a difference in our clients’ lives.” Perkins believes the difference is in their approach to wealth management. “Our philosophy and investment strategy begins with our e3 model—empower, enhance, and elevate—which helps create a lifelong income stream, grow assets for lifestyle and life experiences, and build a framework and path toward a family legacy,” he says. Living the firm’s motto “After all, if money is a means, isn’t it time for it to mean more?” you will find Perkins spending his spare time as a board member of a nonprofit helping people find the resources they need for recovery and advising on the board of a company that makes toys for children with special needs. “I spend my time meeting with clients to stay current with their life events and assure them that their long-term plan and investment policy are still aligned,” says Yore, who holds a Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor (CRPC) designation. While there are many wealth management groups to choose from, this team has experienced many financial markets and while past performance is no indication of future results, the team has learned how to help their clients stay ahead of the curve. Yore learned this from the start, “I was in college when the internet was still new, and we were going through the dot com boom. Markets were hitting all-time highs on a regular basis, and I built a portfolio in one of my finance classes around this. At the end of the year, my portfolio was up and everything I picked was positive and it seemed like such an exciting world. More than 20 years later, I’ve lived through a tech bubble, financial crisis, a pandemic, and countless market corrections. These past two decades have taught me the resilience of the market and how to help clients get through those rough markets.” The care and time that each team member puts into their clients’ lives are really what sets them apart. Kevin Reich, a Client Relationship Manager who made his move to the financial industry in 2003 after working at a Fortune 100 company, says of Reich York Jenne Wealth Management Group, “Other than you and your family, no one will care more about your financial wellbeing than us.” For more information, visit reichyorejennewmg.com.

Michone J. Riewer, a Partner at Lake Bluff-based Strategic Divorce, loves helping people and solving problems. “Being a divorce attorney allows me to do this every day. We help people through the hardest time of their lives,” says Riewer, who holds a Juris Doctor from Georgia State University College of Law. She has been practicing for more than 25 years with experience in all areas of family and matrimonial law, including mediation, custody, visitation, parental decision making, maintenance (formerly known as alimony), child support, financial issues, corporate valuations, pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements, post-decree actions, and civil litigation. “It is very gratifying to be able to assist our clients with creating a plan to resolve their divorce issues and helping them move forward toward their future.” Riewer has extensive experience in corporate law and estate planning which allow her to integrate all aspects of the client’s life. “Many of our clients are sophisticated professionals and business owners. We break down the divorce process into bite-sized pieces that are more understandable and allow the clients to make decisions with confidence because they understand all their options,” says Riewer, who specializes in high-net-worth individuals, business owners, and professionals that need help equitably dividing complicated assets. “Divorce is often adversarial; we help our clients recognize that working toward an amicable settlement costs less financially and emotionally and the outcome often has financial benefits as well. BRENDAN HAMMER BRENDAN HAMMER
Brendan Hammer entered college interested in the performing arts. “I wanted to be a playwright or an actor,” says Hammer, today an attorney focusing on complex, high-net-worth family law matters. “I eventually realized litigation was a way to use my communicative and emotive skills in concrete ways to make a tangible difference for clients and their families.” Interestingly enough, he says it is that background that sets him apart. “Litigation is a combination of sales, marketing, psychology, and theater. Mastery of the law is necessary but not sufficient to excellent trial advocacy,” adds Hammer, a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, who was named one of Crain’s Most Influential Minority Lawyers in 2017 and serves on the advisory council at the David Lynch Foundation (Chicago). “My approach to litigation is informed by a deep focus on the behavioral sciences, cognitive biases and heuristics, persuasion, storytelling, interpersonal psychology, and decision making amid uncertainty.” The first thing he tells clients is that litigation is not about getting moral vindication or emotional validation. “Adjust your expectations to the achievable. There are no prizes for ‘Best Spouse in a Supporting Role’,” he says. “Nassim Taleb once said, ‘There are two types of people, those who try to win an argument and those who try to win. They are never the same.’ In practicing law, I try to stay focused on the signal, not the noise. I try to win.” For more information, visit hammer.llc.

BRETT WILLIAMSON THE STOGSDILL LAW FIRM, P.C.
Brett Williamson has a long history of being a fierce competitor, having spent many years actively participating in sports from high school through college as well as now coaching in the local leagues for his son’s teams. Williamson studied History and English as an undergraduate and realized that those areas of study left him with two career choices, teaching or law. Williamson received his Juris Doctor from The John Marshall Law School in December of 2005, which appeased his competitive nature. In 2006, Williamson joined The Stogsdill Law Firm, P.C. The firm specializes in all aspects of family law and has a unique focus on complex and high conflict divorce on behalf of high-net-worth clientele. Williamson takes pride in delivering personal service to his clientele. One of the first things Williamson tells his clients is that a resolution between the parties is far more beneficial, not just for the parties, but for their children. As a result, he makes preparing for trial from day one a priority and finds that it is the best way to resolve a case. Ultimately, Williamson knows his client’s file inside and out making him prepared to resolve issues in real time. For more information, visit stogsdilllaw.com/brett-t-williamson.

JENNIFER S. TIER JOY M. FEINBERG DAVIS FRIEDMAN, LLP, CHICAGO
“Family law is a conglomeration of many types of law: business, tax, contracts, trusts and more wrapped into the psychological study of human nature. It is thrilling,” says Joy M. Feinberg, a fierce attorney who has devoted the last 40 years to the field. Fellow Davis Friedman partner, Jennifer S. Tier is equally passionate about family law. Growing up watching her friends be “caught in the middle,” Tier steadfastly protects the children first. “This is how I guide my clients,” says Tier. Feinberg is in awe of Tier, “She is mathematically inclined, financially savvy, and has the emotional insight of an elder.” Feinberg, who started her career trying personal injury cases to juries, says this experience defined her career in divorce early on as being creative and relentless. Feinberg pursued a tort action that brought back an abducted child to his mother. Feinberg says, “God had a hand in returning that child, but I applied the force that brought him back to his grateful mother. Jennifer and I fight with every fiber of our beings for our clients.” This is why these two great lawyers, who represent business owners, C Suite and high-level executives, and professionals or their spouses continue to devote their time to updating the IICLE Parenting Rights and Responsibilities Chapter in the Illinois book on Family Law, which Feinberg first wrote in 1992. Creativity and experience, empowered by reason and sensitivity define these powerhouses. Davis | Friedman has offices in Chicago and Northbrook. For more information, visit davisfriedman.com.

TANYA STANISH
SENIOR PARTNER SCHILLER DUCANTO & FLECK LLP Tanya Stanish has practiced in the area of family law for high-net-worth families for more than 25 years. “I have had the privilege of representing many wonderful people in the Chicago area, including business owners, medical professionals, attorneys, professional athletes, a rapper, entrepreneurs, C-suite executives, and their spouses,” says Stanish, who graduated with honors and Order of the Coif from DePaul University College of Law and has an undergraduate degree in Economics. As a Senior Partner at Schiller DuCanto & Fleck LLP, she specializes in divorce, parenting and support conflicts, orders of protection, and negotiating preand post-nuptial agreements. “Some divorce attorneys specialize exclusively in one forum such as mediation or collaborative law or litigation,” Stanish explains. “I expertly practice in many forums, depending upon the right process for the client. I can effectively navigate a client through whichever method is beneficial for the client’s situation and needs.” The first thing she does with a new client is to sit down and listen. “They want me to know how their situation is affecting them and their children. The best way to learn how I can service the client is by listening to their story without judging,” she adds. “Once they tell me their concerns and fears, I can relate the law to the situation and let them know how the law will protect them.” For more information, visit sdflaw.com/team/detail/tanya-stanish/bio.

ERIC L. SCHULMAN SENIOR PARTNER SCHILLER DUCANTO & FLECK LLP
Eric L. Schulman has been practicing complex family law for more than 20 years. A Senior Partner at Schiller DuCanto & Fleck LLP, he prides himself on his balanced, yet aggressive advocacy. “Transparency is something I establish with my clients early on in a case. I tell them what they need to hear, not necessarily what they want to hear,” says Schulman, adding that he also believes in close, frequent communication, working together with his clients as a team toward the best possible outcome. Treating each case as if it were that of his own family or a friend, Schulman has no reservations about trying cases if that is the most suitable option—understanding that settlement out of court is usually in the client’s best interest, both financially and emotionally. He says two things inspired him to become an attorney. “My uncle implored upon me the nobility of practicing law, as he was a well-regarded litigator,” Schulman explains. “Another driving force was my desire to help people when they are at their lowest points, such as going through a divorce.” Schulman specializes in all aspects of family law litigation, from custody, asset valuation, and property division to income examination, pre-nuptial agreements, and maintenance determination. Clients value his ability to accurately assess cases and make well-reasoned judgments about how to reach a favorable outcome. For more information, visit sdflaw.com/team/detail/eric-schulman/bio.

JAMES QUIGLEY SHANA VITEK
DIVORCE AND FAMILY LAW PARTNERS BEERMANN LLP For the past 20 years, James Quigley and Shana Vitek have perfected their unique approach to handling divorce cases using the benefits of a team approach. Often when clients are selecting a divorce lawyer, they are torn between wanting a “shark” who will aggressively fight for their rights, and an attorney who takes a collaborative approach to amicably resolve their case outside the court system in the best interest of their family. Quigley’s and Vitek’s distinct practice styles complement each other, with the result being that their divorce clients have the best of both worlds. Quigley is a top litigator in family law who thrives on competition, having tried hundreds of family law cases in his 30-year career. Vitek is an experienced litigator as well but is also a mediator and collaborator who has settled hundreds of cases without the need for trial. “We seek to handle every case the easy way first. However, a cooperative divorce takes two parties with that same mindset,” says Quigley. Vitek adds, “If one party takes an unreasonable position and litigation becomes necessary, you want the best trial team possible waiting in the wings.” Quigley and Vitek stress the importance of devising a game plan at the beginning of the process, considering the facts of each case, the issues in dispute, the other party, and the opposing attorney. They work with their clients to develop an individualized strategy geared toward each client’s specific goals and concerns. Both Quigley and Vitek are Fellows in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, the gold standard for family lawyers. Quigley is currently President of the Illinois Chapter and Vitek is on the Board of Managers. They have successfully represented athletes, entertainers, and other high-profile clients, reaching confidential settlements when possible and litigating when necessary. PARTNER PARTNER
BEERMANN LLP
Lesley A. Dable and Cory Eli Oshita work as a perfect team, along with their fellow associates at legal leader Beermann LLP. Dable, a long-time Wilmette resident says her career in family law was unexpected but enjoys helping clients successfully get through one of the most difficult times in their lives and thrive. “Having gone through my own divorce, I genuinely care about every individual I represent and understand that the decisions made in a family law case will impact my clients and their family’s future long after my representation has concluded,” shares Dable, a graduate of Washington University School of Law in St. Louis. She prides herself on taking the time to personally know each of her clients and specializes in a wide range of family law matters, such as financial planning, legal separation, prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, parenting time, support, property division, domestic violence, and post-divorce issues. “I recognize that every situation is different, and each client has unique goals,” she explains. Oshita, a litigation attorney since 2008, shares a similar strategy of prioritizing his clients. “I thrive on complicated litigation situations including parenting dispute litigation and high worth asset division,” he says. Oshita, like Dable, is a certified financial litigator and has litigated hundreds of cases in the areas of Family Law, Criminal Law, Consumer Bankruptcy, and Small Business Disputes. Among his many accomplishments, he was rated as “Recommended or Qualified” for position of Judge by organizations including the Chicago Bar Association, Cook County Bar Association, and LAGBAC, among others. Although it may sound cliché, both attorneys agree that they are proud to represent Beermann’s philosophy—“The Family Law Firm That Cares.” For more information on Cory Eli Oshita, visit beermannlaw.com/team/cory-e-oshita. KATHRYN HOMBURGER MICKELSON, HOWARD A. LONDON, EQUITY PARTNER
EQUITY PARTNER AND MANAGING PARTNER
BEERMANN LLP
Howard A. London understands the success behind Beermann LLP, because he has helped lead the firm to become the largest family law firm in Illinois, and one of the most preeminent. “I was fortunate to be hired right out of law school and mentored by founding partner, Miles Beermann, one of the best and most ethical lawyers ever to practice,” says London, a 1978 George Washington University Law School graduate. The seasoned attorney, who has counseled individuals and businesses in a wide variety of matters and in nearly every type of dispute resolution process, also has a keen eye for talent. In 2004 he hired Kathryn Homburger Mickelson as a law clerk, and the rest is history. A former public relations executive, Kathryn rose through the ranks to equity partner, channeling her drive and tenacity into each case. “Katy’s ability to listen and hear her clients, and then produce results, is why she is one of the Chicago area’s most prominent family law attorneys,” shares London. Among their accomplishments, London was named Chicago area Family Law Lawyer of the Year by Best Lawyers in America in 2018 and 2020. Mickelson, a North Shore native who graduated from University of Michigan and Chicago-Kent College of Law, was named one of the Law Bulletin Publishing Company’s 40 Under 40 Illinois Attorneys to Watch in 2012 and continues to take on leadership roles to help the next generation of legal leaders. Through these trusted professionals and their fellow attorneys at Beermann LLP, clients can be sure they are in good hands, explains London, “Our clients benefit from having access to the firm’s extensive resources, especially the many talented and dedicated attorneys at Beermann.” For more information on Howard A. MICHAEL J. LEVY ASSOCIATE BEERMANN LLP
Michael J. Levy, an Associate at legal leader, Beermann LLP and New Trier High School alumnus (Class of 2008), knew the field of family law was what he was meant to practice after a pivotal externship in 2014. “My true passion for the practice of family law was cemented when I served as an extern to the Presiding Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County’s Domestic Relations Division in the summer of 2014,” he explains. “In working closely with his judge and other professionals in the division, I began to fully appreciate and understand the positive impact that a dedicated family law attorney can have on a divorcing family.” Levy’s work includes counseling clients on dissolution of marriage, legal separation, parenting issues including allocation of parental responsibilities and child support, spousal maintenance, parental alienation, and domestic violence. As a student at the University of Wisconsin Law School, he participated in the Frank J. Remington Center’s Restorative Justice Clinic helping those incarcerated with family law matters—requiring a high level of empathy that he continues to carry with clients today. “I understand that for many of my clients this is one of the first times they are interacting with the court system which can be a very daunting and scary endeavor,” he says. “I assure them to take a deep breath and that they are in good hands with me and the Beermann team.” Levy’s clients often tell him that they will miss talking to him daily, a testament to Levy’s ability to convey empathy while also providing clear and sound guidance. Recognized by Illinois Super Lawyers in 2012 through 2022, Best Lawyers in America in 2021 and 2022, and Leading Lawyers in 2015 through 2021, among other honors, Maksimuk skillfully guides—and stands by—his clients throughout the divorce process to achieve their goals. From the start, he tells clients, “It’s going to be ok. I can help protect and preserve what is most important to you.” He then helps them set a plan in place, providing strategic guidance, aggressive advocacy, and effectiveness in achieving his client’s goals. From a young age Maksimuk knew he wanted to be a litigation attorney and fight for his client’s rights. “From an early age, my education, my athletic competition, and my training has all led me to where I am today—a partner at one of the most preeminent family law firms in the country,” he explains. Today, he has taken on an even larger role fighting for the rights of children as a member of the Board of Directors for CASA of DuPage County—a position he’s held since 2019. Meighan Harmon’s passion for family law became evident early in law school. Now 25 years into the practice and being internationally recognized for her achievements, Harmon prides herself on encouraging clients to look towards brighter horizons and helping them build a future that is both financially and emotionally secure. Her philosophy, which she imparts to clients, is simple: focus on the future as quickly and early as possible. “When clients focus on the past, they tend to get stuck there and not achieve their best results,” says Harmon. “There are few opportunities we have as adults to reinvent ourselves and get a fresh start. Divorce provides that opportunity, should you choose to take it.” In addition to her proactive approach to divorce, Harmon is an incredibly versatile attorney, who is exceptionally skilled in both litigation and mediation with a stellar track record for success. Harmon focuses her sophisticated practice on complex family law cases involving multi-generational wealth, business valuation, and complex trusts and estates. Adding to her top-tier guidance, she is a champion for the next generation of women in law. She is both a member of the Executive Committee and the first female Managing Partner at her firm. Harmon, a working mother herself, notes the importance for young female lawyers to learn from other successful female leaders like herself. “It gives young women the professional confidence that they’ll be okay and that there is a path for them to have both professional and personal success—it may not be easy, but they don’t have to choose one over the other.” For more information, visit sdflaw.com/meighan-harmon/bio.

JENNIFER HANSEN, PARTNER
LARA CLEARY, PARTNER HANSEN & CLEARY, LLC
What started as a childhood speech articulation issue for attorney Lara Cleary has grown into a successful law career today. Cleary, who partnered with attorney Jennifer Hansen in 2017 to create Hansen & Cleary, LLC, credits her time receiving speech services and helping students in her elementary school’s special education program as an inspiration for her career. “Based on this experience, I became a special education teacher, taught in the Chicago Public Schools for a few years, and then went to law school with the express purpose of representing individuals with disabilities,” Cleary says. After law school, she partnered with her mentor, Brooke Whitted, to form Whitted & Cleary in 2001 where they practiced for 15 years before Whitted’s death. That is where she met Jennifer Hansen—a practiced attorney who attended the Universiteit Maastricht in the Netherlands to obtain a LL.M. in European and Comparative Law after law school in Wyoming. When Hansen returned to Chicago and took on a role of assistant public defender in Lake County, she had every intention of practicing at a big firm in International and Human Rights Law. But, as fate would have it, Hansen fell in love with the criminal defense side of law. “I began to realize that many of my clients were adults with disabilities or mental health issues, and I found that my empathy and understanding of individuals with disabilities really helped my representation,” Hansen says. Today, the two, along with another highly skilled attorney and paralegal, make up the team at Hansen & Cleary—a boutique law practice that focuses on special education law, school law, mental health law, and other disability law. Hansen and Cleary pride themselves on providing sound legal advice with empathy and attentiveness—qualities that have attracted many client referrals over the past five years. fter a two-year hiatus, the James Beard Awards returned to Chicago in June, bringing together the nation’s top chefs, restaurateurs, and hospitality professionals for an evening of ceremony and celebration. All attendees were red carpet-ready for the “Oscars of the food world,” which took place at the Lyric Opera and were followed by a reception at Union Station featuring cocktails, bubbles, and regal bites from restaurants spanning the country. Established in 1990, the Awards are considered one of the highest honors in the culinary realm, recognizing exceptional talent in the restaurant and food media industries and a commitment to racial and gender equity, community, and sustainability. Leaders in the dining landscape were highlighted across more than 20 categories, including Emerging Chef, Outstanding Hospitality, and the regional Best Chefs titles (including Chicago chef Erick Williams of Virtue Restaurant & Bar).

The process of working with the Flanagan Group was flawless. For a first time home buyer I had a lot of questions and uncertainty around the what was expected of me and what to look for. hat sets the Wexler Gault Group apart from most realtors? Relationships, drive and results. The group’s energy and enthusiasm are contagious from the moment you meet them. Beth Wexler, Joey Gault, and Liz Salinas have been working together for more than 20 years and have consistently ranked amongst the top 1 percent of realtors in the Chicago area. “We make the whole process seamless and easy,” says Wexler. “We have systems in place from the second a client signs with us.” Their partnership began in Chicago but when they all moved their families to the North Shore, the focus of their business moved as well. Their @properties office is now located in Highland Park. In addition, they all have extensive connections with many North Shore brokers. “Because we are living in the communities, we get a lot of information about new listings and properties that are not yet on the market,” says Salinas. Both Wexler and Salinas live in Highland Park. “I wanted to live in a walkable location, and I think the best part of living on the North Shore is the peace and beauty. I live a block from the lake and my daily walks to the water bring my blood pressure down a little bit,” Wexler says. Gault and her family moved from the city to Deerfield and have never looked back. “I just think living up north, life is easier. We have tons of parks, community pools, community sports—all of the things that suburbia has to offer.” “We are all well aware that a home is typically a family’s single largest investment and we take this responsibility seriously,” Gault says. Wexler adds, “We don’t feel that it’s simply about price, it is meeting our clients’ needs whether it’s location, finishes, size or feel.” Relationship-building makes The Wexler Gault Group stand out. “We feel so connected and close to our clients that they become friends,” says Wexler. “For the amount of volume we do, one person couldn’t handle this alone,” Salinas says. She serves as managing partner of The Wexler Gault Group in addition to representing her own clients. “For us to provide the best service to our clients, the three of us must be intimately involved with the transaction process and maintain good communication. The clients meet all three of us at some point. They know that one of us is always available and attentive to their needs and that nothing is going to fall through the cracks. Because truthfully that’s what we’re here for, client service.” They regard their entire team in the Highland Park office as one community. “We are all kind of rooting for each other, trying to make everyone better agents and trying to help people on our team as much as possible with any questions they have and mentor them.” “We all love teaching,” Gault says. “We have so much to share and the people we bring on are really driven and perhaps just

starting out in the business. For them to be able to come into this established group and have everything laid out for them is great. We have our own team handbook and we are available to answer questions 24/7.” Client advocacy is a top priority for the three women. “We have clients in all different price ranges going through different life events, which can be stressful,” Wexler says. “I feel it’s very important to be a resource and an advocate for our clients’ needs.” It’s easy to see how their extensive market knowledge, commitment to excellence, and devotion to their clients have kept this team at the top of the real estate game for more than two decades. The Wexler Gault Group’s @properties office is located at 607 Central Avenue in Highland Park. For more information, call 312-961-6699 or visit thewexlergaultgroup.com.

BMO Wealth Management’s Katie Florig discusses generational investing.
W
WORDS BY ROCHELLE NEWMAN RUBINOFF / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR
ith more than 25 years of experience in the financial services industry as a portfolio manager, Katie Florig is more than qualified for her position as the managing director of the BMO Wealth Management office in Winnetka. In this role, Florig oversees a team of professionals dedicated to providing high-net-worth individuals, families, and organizations, including closely-held and family-owned businesses, endowments, and foundations, with a full range of wealth services as part of an overall personal wealth management strategy. “We’ve got a fantastic group of professionals, who have deep expertise in their field,” Florig says. She estimates that most of the professionals in her group have more than twenty-five years of experience in the financial services industry. “It’s a very talented group. They are people who live on the North Shore and are invested in their communities and want to help the people and businesses here. They do their very best to make where we live and work great places to be.” Florig received a BS from Miami University in Ohio and holds a Charted Financial Analyst® designation and is a Certified Financial Planner® professional. Florig lives in Kenilworth with her husband and daughter, just a block from where she grew up. BMO Wealth Management clients represent a wide range of individuals. “Wealth comes in a lot of different flavors,” says Florig. “Many people are business owners. They might have founded and created their own businesses, or they may be part of a multi-generational business that has been on the North Shore for decades. We also have a lot of clients that are high-level corporate executives, as well as doctors, lawyers, and other specialists. There is really no standard wealth client.” BMO Wealth Management works with clients in a variety of ways to both preserve and grow wealth. “We work with business owners to develop strategies that encompass both their goals for their businesses as well as their personal wealth. We are able to utilize our planning, tax, and trust and estate specialists to ensure
those two areas work in harmony, which can be especially complicated with multi-generational ownership structures.” Working with the next generation is particularly gratifying for Florig and makes up a large percentage of her business. “It’s really wonderful to start working with grandparents, then get to meet their adult children, and eventually their grandchildren. We work to customize our delivery for the different needs across the generations. The grandkids have a very different investment time horizon and risk tolerance than the grandparents do, and I think we do a good job teaching younger generations about what wealth means and how to be good wealth stewards. This crucial step in the process is really rewarding.” The office does not do a lot of external marketing—because it doesn’t need to. “A lot of our clients are here through word-ofmouth,” Florig says. “Our existing clients are our best sales team because they’re happy and they’re talking to their friends and family. That’s usually a pretty solid introduction.” In an initial meeting, “it’s just having a conversation, have you ever talked to anybody about planning? Do you have a trust? What are your retirement goals? Have you thought about what you want your future to look like? We are trying to peel back the layers of the onion to determine where we might relieve some worry or help with a solution. Maybe it’s on the banking side, maybe it’s on the investment side or planning and maybe it’s all those things, but we try and identify what’s going to be most helpful to the client in achieving their goals.” “I never take for granted the fact that our clients are entrusting us with their life savings; that is not something to be taken lightly. It’s a major responsibility and it’s an unbelievable level of trust that we’re given. It’s truly something that I am humbled by and grateful for,” Florig says. BMO Wealth Management is located at 520 Green Bay Road in Winnetka. For more information, visit wealthadvisor.bmoharris.com.

Plastic Surgery Update: CREATING A YOUTHFUL MOUTH
M
any patients who I see in consultations think they need a facelift. What they really need to address is the aging process around the mouth, which is not corrected by a traditional facelift. As we age, the distance between the base of the nose and upper lip lengthens and the corners of the mouth droop. The lips lose volume and thin out, and wrinkles and vertical lines appear. There are various options to restore and create a more youthful mouth. First is a lip lift, where a small incision is made at the base of the nose and an ellipse of skin is removed to shorten the distance and create a fuller lip. The droop of the mouth’s corners is addressed by excising a “valentine” ellipse of skin, creating a lift. This improves the “marionette” lines and corrects an angry or sad expression. Lastly, the lower lip loses volume, and if deemed too thin, an incision is made in the central lower lip. An ellipse of skin is removed, and the lip is rolled downward. The procedure provides a plump youthful lower lip. All of these incisions are very well hidden and heal extremely well. If additional volume is needed, the patient has several options. A fat transfer using the patient’s own fat can be injected into the nasolabial folds, lips, marionette, and prejowl areas to restore volume. Fillers such as Restylane or Juvéderm are another option. Laser resurfacing, plasma peels, and/or injections are often employed to correct the fine lines, wrinkles, or skin texture. All of the above procedures are often done at once depending upon what is needed. This can only be determined after a careful exam. The art of facial rejuvenation is to create a perfectly natural face that looks refreshed and youthful. There truly is an “art” to this, involving far more than just injections and fillers. Patients have choices and should seek out an expert who is comfortable with these techniques.

Corporate Philanthropist Laura Coy shares how William Blair supports clients and the community. WORDS BY ROCHELLE NEWMAN RUBINOFF / ILLUSTRATION BY ROBERT RISKO

aura Coy was always destined for her corporate philanthropy role at William Blair. She was just a child when her father, head of John Deere’s philanthropy department, introduced her to the field. “I grew up around the notion that companies can both do well and do good.” Her career began in the nonprofit world, where she worked for a variety of organizations, including the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, the Alzheimer’s Association, and the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago. “My experience as both a fundraiser and a grant-maker enables me to help nonprofits as a corporate philanthropist.” Coy’s official title at William Blair is Head of Philanthropy, Strategy, and ESG Integration. As such she is responsible for overseeing the company’s community engagement and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) integration. “I help families, foundations, companies, and colleagues initiate high-impact philanthropy and ESG strategies focused on innovation and shared value,” she says. Coy explains that she and her team “leverage best practices as a company to help clients who have foundations, charitable entities, and programs maximize their giving. At the end of the day, we want a broad network of corporations and families to engage in high-impact philanthropy.” Her team also oversees William Blair’s signature Global Community Partners program. Each partnership is employee-led and creates impact in the communities where they live and work. The company supports charitable giving and volunteerism for its employees in a variety of other ways, including providing matching gifts, paid days for volunteering, and incentives to serve on boards and committees.
When aligning herself with an organization, Coy is understandably selective. One such organization is the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center. “We’re living in a world that needs better communication and insights shared about humanitarianism. The Museum upholds those goals in its programming about the Holocaust and many other public programs and exhibitions focusing on tolerance and inclusion. It brings its mission to life through two distinct perspectives: honoring the past and transforming the future in thoughtful and innovative ways.” Lori Fagenholz, the Holocaust Museum’s Associate Director of Development notes, “We are very fortunate to have Laura as a member of the Museum’s family, Women’s Leadership Committee, and as an ambassador to the community. She embodies the Museum’s mission and believes that learning the history of the Holocaust and the lessons that can be applied to our world today transcend all religious and ethnic boundaries.” Coy is looking forward to the Women’s Leadership Committee’s biggest fundraiser, “The Soirée” on September 8 at the Chicago Botanic Garden. “The Soirée is a meaningful event with great friends, handcrafted cocktails, fabulous food, and the famous signature donut wall,” explains Fagenholz. The highly anticipated event raises funds to support the Museum’s award-winning exhibits, programs, and special projects. Coy’s impact in the corporate philanthropic world and at the Museum can be felt far and wide—her father would be proud. For more information, visit ihm.ec/soiree.
