W H A T M Y C L I E N T S A R E S AY I N G “Although we have never written an online review for a service provider before, we felt it was incredibly important to take a moment to write a review for Susan. We needed a full-serve real estate agent who intuitively understood our needs and wants, was a genuine regional expert in our real estate market in order to ensure that we were being advocated for, and advised, in the very best way. Knowing that there are so many working professionals and busy families who are seeking a highly competent, incredibly professional and genuinely caring and uncompromising full-service start-to-finish real estate to support their real estate needs, I wanted to share that our family’s experience with Susan Brown Burklin was absolutely outstanding!” - Buyer/Seller, Highland Park, IL

h, summertime! My favorite time of year. Long days, short dresses, and dining alfresco. Our cover feature toasts Sofia Colucci, who lends a female voice to the beverage industry as global head of marketing for Miller—“The Champagne of Beers.” Our second feature highlights the 120th Western Amateur Golf tournament at Exmoor Country Club—a story North Shore golf aficionados are sure to enjoy. Swapping green courses for green pastures, our third feature visits Alden Hills Organic Farms where the Powers family shares the rewards and challenges of local farming. Craving farm-to-table freshness this summer? Sign up for Alden Hills’ North Shore deliveries. Trading livestock for hockey sticks, our final feature introduces STY House founder Lewis Simon. After Lewis’ hoped-for pro hockey career was sidelined, he founded STY House - a clothing line with a mission to educate young athletes about the dangers of concussions. Hoping to dive into a book at the beach or pool? Our Summer Reads provides a reading list celebrating local authors. Looking to exercise your body in addition to your mind? Rebecca Asfour, founder of BIRD Barre + Cycle, divulges her workout philosophy and favorite things in Shore vs. City. Gentlemen’s Quarterly presents fabulous finds for Father’s Day. Lake Forest’s Smith’s Men’s Store will have dad looking dapper from head to toe. Centennial spotlights another Lake Forest clothing staple—The Lake Forest Shop—which celebrates its 100th anniversary. With connections to Condé Nast and Coco Chanel, owner Ellen Stirling recounts the shop’s sterling history. Speaking of the past, years ago I saw a fascinating documentary about World War II’s Ghost Army. So, I was excited to learn a new Illinois Holocaust Museum exhibit will pay homage to

this once top-secret military unit. In Art & Artist, Chief Curator of Collections and Exhibitions Arielle Weininger shares how the art of deception helped win the war. Seeking a secluded sanctuary to escape from it all? First Class whisks us off to St. Andros island in the Bahamas where you’ll find white sand beaches, turquoise water, and luxe surroundings at Caerula Mar Club. Back on the Shore, Home Tour highlights a Highland Park manse with stunning views inside and out. We end the issue on a high note with Lauren McClusky, the whiz behind Nelarusky—Lollapalooza’s famed afterparty benefiting the Illinois Special Olympics. Nothing sings summertime more than these famous Chicago concerts. Cheers to a wonderful season.

NE WS WO RTH Y CEZANNE IN THE CITY Summer in Chicago is often lauded for the few months of the year when its residents can revel in the warmth and sun of the outdoors. This season, however, it is what is featured inside the Art Institute of Chicago that is the talk of the town with crowds enjoying the scenery of the exhibition Cezanne running through September 5. The retrospective, the first in nearly a quarter-century, focuses on the French artist’s enduring modernity in style and spirit. The oeuvre of Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) is examined through various perspectives, from his technique and subject matter to his interactions with contemporaries, and subsequent influence on future followers. How he portrayed people, depicted still-lifes, and captured landscapes is examined for its continuing relevance today through the scholarship of Gloria Groom, Chair and David and Mary Winton Green Curator of European Painting and Sculpture, and Caitlin Haskell, Gary C. and Frances Comer Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. The pair also worked closely with the London’s Tate Modern where the show will later travel. John D. and Alexandra C. Nichols provided lead support of the exhibition. Art Institute of Chicago Trustee Alexandra Nichols shares, “It is thrilling to be a part of this once-in-a-generation retrospective of Cezanne’s work. The exhibition is beautiful and is an important reflection of Cezanne’s profound impact and ongoing influence on the world of art.” For more information, visit artic.edu.

S UMMER READ S

NORTH SHORE NOVELISTS

Authors with ties to the North Shore pen sizzling new reads that provide the perfect distraction for sunny summer afternoons. EDITED BY DUSTIN O’REGAN

From the New York Times bestselling author of Fugitive Colors and The Unbreakables—Woman on Fire is a gripping tale of a savvy, young Chicago journalist embroiled in an international art scandal centered around a Nazi-looted masterpiece—forcing the ultimate showdown between passion and possession, lovers and liars, history and truth. Rising young journalist Jules Roth is given an unusual assignment—to locate a painting stolen by the Nazis: legendary Expressionist artist Ernst Engel’s most famous work, Woman on Fire. Meanwhile, the powerful Margaux de Laurent also searches for the painting. Heir to her art collector family’s millions, Margaux is a cunning gallerist who gets everything she wants. A thrilling tale of secrets, love, and sacrifice that illuminates the destructive cruelty of war and greed and the triumphant power of beauty and love. THE ADVENTURES OF HERBIE COHEN by Rich Cohen Meet Herbie Cohen, World’s Greatest Negotiator: dealmaker; risk-taker; raconteur; adviser to presidents and corporations; hostage and arms negotiator; lesson giver and justice seeker; author of the how-to business classic You Can Negotiate Anything. And, of course, The New York Times bestselling author Rich Cohen’s father. The novel follows our hero from his youth spent running around Brooklyn with his pals Sandy Koufax, Larry King, Who Ha, Inky, and Ben the Worrier; to his days coaching

basketball in the army in Europe; to his years as a devoted and unconventional husband, father, and freelance guru crossing the country to give lectures, settle disputes, and hone the art of success while finding meaning in this strange, funny world. This book, a bildungsroman, a collection of tall tales, the unfolding of a unique biography coiled around Herbie’s great insight and guiding principle: The secret of life is to care, but not that much. WHEN WE LET GO by Rochelle B. Weinstein From the USA Today bestselling author of This Is Not How It Ends, this is a moving novel of family and forgiveness and of hope and healing. When Avery Beckett is proposed to by Jude Masters, a widowed father and the man she loves, it should be a time of great joy. Instead, she is on edge and too afraid to take the leap. It’s the kind of fear that comes from having secrets. Before Avery commits, she must reconcile with the life she left behind. When she returns to her childhood farm, she’s surprised to be saddled with a companion: Jude’s teenage daughter who’s grappling with the loss of her mother and the complicated emotions of first love. When We Let Go is about the lessons that come from heartbreak and the healing it takes to embrace the joy of a second chance. GILT by Jamie Brenner The acclaimed author of Blush presents a compelling novel about a jewelry dynasty. The Pavlin family built an empire on love. As the first jewelers to sell diamond rings exclusively for proposals, they started an engagement-defining tradition. But when a publicity stunt pits the three Pavlin sisters against one another, their bond is broken and one of the sisters dies. Now,

over a decade later, Gemma Maybrook is still reconciling the reality of her mother’s death. Left orphaned and cast out by her family, Gemma is ready to reclaim what should have been hers. From Manhattan’s tony Fifth Avenue to the vibrant sands of Provincetown, Gilt follows the Pavlin women as they are forced to confront the past if they have any hope of finding love and happiness of their own. METROPOLIS by B.A. Shapiro

This masterful novel of psychological suspense from the New York Times bestselling author of The Art Forger follows a cast of unforgettable characters whose lives intersect when a harrowing accident occurs at the Metropolis Storage Warehouse in Cambridge, Massachusetts. But was it an accident? Was it suicide? A murder? Six mysterious characters, who rent units in, or are connected to the self-storage facility, must now reevaluate their lives. The characters have a variety of backgrounds: they are different races; they practice different religions; they’re young and they’re not so young; they are rich, poor, and somewhere in the middle. As the characters dip in and out of one another’s lives, fight circumstances that are within but also beyond their control, and try to discover the details of the accident, Shapiro both dismantles the myth of the American dream and builds tension to an exciting climax. Metropolis is a spellbinding story of what we hang on to, what we might need to let go, and how unexpected events can lead us to discover our truest selves.

HERE, THERE, AND EVERYWHERE International family law specialist Jay Dahlin is a man of the world.

“T

WORDS BY THOMAS CONNORS / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR

he art of acting,” said the great Sir Ralph Richardson, “consists in keeping people from coughing.” While tongue-in-cheek, that crack contained a kernel of truth, one that Schiller DuCanto & Fleck attorney Jay Dahlin recognizes very well. “Trial is theater,” suggests Dahlin, who was keen on acting as a high school and college student. “As attorneys, we are performing, using our voice and presentation to deliver a compelling narrative that will convince the judge that our position is the correct position.” Dahlin, who grew up watching L.A. Law, knew early on that he wanted to be an attorney. After earning his Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctorate degrees from the University of Illinois, he practiced as a corporate attorney with a special interest in international law. Servicing such clients as Lloyd’s of London stood him in good stead when he joined Schiller DuCanto & Fleck in 2003 and segued into family law. “There was a need for someone with international experience and the willingness to take on those family cases when I arrived here, so I really hit the ground running and I’ve been doing that for nearly 20 years now.” The world may be a global village, but we still need a current passport when we travel. And when it comes to international family law litigation, a lawyer must possess dual citizenship, so to speak. “Imagine,” says Dahlin, “you have a husband who is an American citizen and a wife who is a citizen of France. And they own real estate in Illinois and in Paris. They may have some American accounts and some French accounts. So you need to craft an agreement that takes into consideration the laws of America and the laws of France, you need to realize a judgment that is enforceable and recognized in both countries.” Over the years, Dahlin has negotiated the legal systems of multiple countries from Switzerland and Germany to Israel and South Africa. And when it comes to identifying, valuing, and allocating assets, he has found himself evaluating everything from a cannery business in the suburbs of Mexico City to a fractional interest in an emerald mine in Zambia. Besides contending with far-flung assets, Dahlin must also take into account that spousal support provisions vary from country to country. “In America, we have pretty extensive laws when it comes to maintenance, but in Europe, for example, you don’t have those broad spousal support mechanisms because governments step in more with things like health insurance.” Child custody, of course, is a major component of many of Dahlin’s cases, and here too, his ability to navigate borders has been key to his success. “There are certain countries, where the father’s rights to a child are predominant and there are others — India for example — where the mother’s rights drastically precede those of the father. So as you move around the world, you learn there are different presumptions as to which parent is the primary parent, which parent should have custody of the children, or how far a spouse must go in providing child support. These vary dramatically, so it is important to know what those cultural differences are and how they affect families who might be litigating in those countries.”

Jay Dahlin

One area in which Dahlin has extensive expertise is child abduction. “Generally, these are dealt with under The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction, but not all countries are signatories of the Convention,” he relates. “So what I do in those cases is try to get kids back from overseas, or get a child who has been brought to the United States back to their home country.” No matter what the case or who the client, for Dahlin, transparency is paramount. “There’s logistical transparency — this is what we are going to need to do, this is how long it’s going to take, this is what it’s going to cost — and there’s substantive transparency — objective assessment of the facts of the case and the law applied to the facts of their case. It’s not my job to be a cheerleader for the client. It’s my job to provide an objective assessment of what’s obtainable under the law and advocate for the best possible result.” The Schiller DuCanto & Fleck, LLP Chicago office is located at 321 N. SPOUSAL SUPPORT

Strategic Divorce attorney Michone J. Riewer reviews Illinois law as it applies to spousal support. WORDS BY MICHONE J. RIEWER PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES GUSTIN OF FIG MEDIA STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA HAIR & MAKEUP BY LEANNA ERNEST

S

pousal support, also known as alimony and maintenance, is the financial support paid from one spouse to the other. It may be ordered on a temporary basis during a divorce and is often ordered following a divorce for a prescribed period. The purpose of maintenance is to enable a spouse who is not capable of supporting themselves to continue to have the lifestyle to which they became accustomed during the marriage. The Illinois maintenance statute requires the court to consider several factors to determine if an award of maintenance is appropriate. If the court

deems that maintenance is warranted, the next step is calculating the payment’s amount and duration. The Illinois legislature has enacted a statute that provides a formula for calculating this amount in cases where the parties’ combined gross income is less than $500,000. This formula considers each party’s respective net income from all sources. The statutory formula calls for 33.333 percent of the payor’s net income minus 25 percent of the recipient’s net income. The outcome of this formula equals the yearly support that should be paid. The statute imposes a cap on this formula so that one spouse cannot earn more than 40 percent of the couple’s combined income. In cases with a combined gross income of $500,000 or more, the court has broad discretion in determining maintenance. Courts often follow the statutory formula described in the above paragraph on the first $500,000 and then often order a lower percentage to be applied to income over $500,000 per year. Even though there is a statutory formula, the calculated amount can be negotiated by the spouses if they agree or if there are unusual circumstances. However, it is unlikely that a court will deviate from the formula. Once the amount of spousal support is determined, then the question turns to how long that support must be paid. This question is answered by determining how long the couple was married. The years of marriage are measured from the ceremony date to the divorce filing date. Those years correspond to a specific multiplier. For example, for parties married less than five years, a multiplier of .2 times the number of years is used. For the parties married eight to nine years, a multiplier of .36 is used. These multipliers increase incrementally up to 20 years of marriage. After 20 or more years, the length of spousal support equals the number of years of the marriage. If the marriage lasted ten or more years, spousal support does not automatically end when this initial period is over. Once the initial period is over, the court will determine if support should continue based on the needs of the receiving spouse, the paying spouse’s ability to pay, and the total circumstances at the time of the review. Spousal support can be modified based on a substantial change in circumstances like a significant increase or decrease in either party’s income. The parties can agree to a modification of maintenance themselves through negotiation or mediation. However, if the sought-after change cannot be agreed upon, either party can file a petition with the court and a judge will decide how much, if any, change is appropriate. Prior to January 1, 2019, an ex-spouse paying support could deduct the expense from their federal taxes while the ex-spouse receiving maintenance payments had to claim the payments as taxable income. Following a significant revision of the Illinois statute, spousal support is no longer deductible by the payor or taxable to the recipient. This change is not retroactive and only applies to spousal support awarded after January 2019. If the spouse receiving support dies, remarries, or cohabitates, spousal support is terminated. Have any questions about how to calculate maintenance in Illinois? Wondering how the unique aspects of your situation may impact spousal support? Seeking to modify an existing maintenance agreement? Strategic Divorce’s skilled attorneys can ably handle the issue of spousal support along with every other aspect of divorce. Michone J. Warner Institute is proud and excited to offer

REVISION

warner institute REVISION RHINOPLASTY Most decisions in life don’t come with an undo button. Thankfully, an unsatisfactory nose job doesn’t have to be one of them. If your first rhinoplasty didn't yield the results you were hoping for, you have options.

The Warner Institute, led by Dr. Jeremy Warner, MD FACS, offers surgical and minimally invasive revision rhinoplasties that can be performed without ever stepping foot in a hospital operating room. Dr. Warner is double board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. Through his comprehensive consultation process, he addresses each patient's cosmetic or functional concerns, recreating a natural look that will correct any issues brought about by the first rhinoplasty. Having to undergo a second surgery to correct a previous one can be stressful, but Dr. Warner's extensive experience and surgery plan ensures maximum comfortability throughout the entire process — making sure you leave with the right result while avoiding the anxiety that comes with traditional hospitalbased plastic surgery. Revision rhinoplasty will have you looking and feeling your best just in time for summer break festivities! Call our office today to schedule a consultation.

A CENTURY OF STYLE

At the helm of the iconic Lake Forest Shop, Ellen Stirling celebrates the store’s 100th anniversary the only way she knows how—in style.

t’s a significant milestone for any retailer to celebrate 100 years in business. It’s even more so when you know that it’s a family-owned business that had to navigate its way through a pandemic in order to celebrate its centennial anniversary. “We didn’t lay anyone off,” explains Lake Forest Shop owner Ellen Stirling. “No furloughs and everyone stayed on the payroll. We did it right. And when we came back, everyone was wonderful and ready to go.” The Lake Forest Shop is an iconic North Shore institution— styling women for all occasions of life, from the every day to the extraordinary. The Lake Forest Shop was opened by Stirling’s grandmother, socialite Margaret Baxter Foster. “I never knew my grandmother, but from what I hear she was a real pistol,” Stirling says. “I wish she was a customer of ours today because she couldn’t stop shopping. She would buy closets of clothes until she finally didn’t have room for anything more. So, my grandfather suggested she open a store.” The Lake Forest Sports Shop first hung its shingle in 1922. In many ways, the Lake Forest Sports Shop was ahead of its time. “My grandmother was a visionary, bringing separates to the shop—much like her friend Coco Chanel was doing in France. This was a different way of dressing in this community in those days.” The next several decades were an exciting time for this new retailer. A wonderful woman named Millie Duncan was hired to manage the shop. The store was wildly successful, leading Foster to open a second location in Hubbard Woods. “Condé Nast came into my grandmother’s life at a really critical time,” Stirling says of the media magnate who published titles like Vogue, Vanity Fair, and The New Yorker and who married her aunt. “He was able to introduce my grandmother to designers and clientele that helped the store thrive and connect her to the fashion world in a way that wouldn’t have been possible without him.” Then, in the 1950s, Stirling’s parents Adair and Volney Foster took the shop over from her grandmother and launched the Lake Forest Sports Shop in Barrington and Hinsdale. “My parents ran the shops more like a hobby than a business,” Stirling says. “And in the ’80s, the brand really began to struggle and my father considered closing it. But I knew we had something special with our stores and I told my father that I’d be interested in taking them over.” When Stirling stepped in, her first move was to close the satellite locations. “I had three little girls and I needed to focus my energies on the Market Square store.” By 1992, she paid off the store’s debt and set the retailer on the road to success. “If I could go back and change one thing about those early days, I would have dropped the ‘Sports’ from the name of our store sooner,” Stirling says. “We were always getting calls about golf clubs or tennis rackets. I still remember the Christmas Eve that a man walked in with an empty bowling bag looking for a bowling ball. From then on, we were The Lake Forest Shop.”

The Lake Forest Shop owner Ellen Stirling

When asked what keeps her engaged in the store after all of these years, Stirling answers thoughtfully. “My family, my grandmother’s vision, our customers who are like family, our incredible team, and the opportunities we have before us. I also think all of the nonprofits we work with in our Shop Your Cause event—giving back and recognizing the effort and difference every one of those organizations makes to our community. All of those things really push me forward. And just wanting to succeed! My grandmother and father cared so much about this place.” Yet few things bring Stirling as much joy as seeing The Lake Forest Shop busy again. “Shortly after we reopened the store after it had been closed for COVID, I was sitting in my office when I heard this noise,” she says. “I was deep in thought, but I stood up and opened my door to see what was going on. When I did, I saw that there were all of these people in the store—smiling and laughing, looking so happy to be here. This is the way things are supposed to be and here it was.” The Lake Forest Shop has a number of events planned for the summer months, culminating in an anniversary celebration on Thursday, September 15. GHOST STORY

The Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center unveils an exhibit about one of World War II’s most guarded secrets—the Ghost Army. WORDS BY ANN MARIE SCHEIDLER PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY ILLINOIS HOLOCAUST MUSEUM & EDUCATION CENTER

W

hen most people are asked to define the military, their answers often include descriptions of marching soldiers or rumbling tanks. But few include stories about the Ghost Army—a covert unit of talented artists who were carefully selected and, in some cases, hand-picked for their specialized skill set. “The Ghost Army helped the United States military use creativity and imaginative thinking to win against the enemy— Nazi tyranny,” says Arielle Weininger, Chief Curator of Collections and Exhibitions at the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center. “The Ghost Army exhibit shows that there was an important place for artists in the military. It really took an artistic mind to come up with such an effective level of deception.”

Ghost Army: The Combat Con Artists of World War II, a largescale, in-depth exhibit opens at the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center on June 16 and was created by the National World War II Museum in New Orleans. The exhibit tells the heroic tale of the top-secret U.S. Army’s 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, known as the Ghost Army, and their secretive operations across Europe. Armed with nothing heavier than .50 caliber machine guns, this carefully selected group of artists, engineers, professional soldiers, and draftees—the first mobile, multimedia, tactical deception unit in U.S. Army history—saved thousands of lives and played an important part in the Allied victory by impersonating other Allied Army units to deceive the enemy. Consisting of 82 officers and 1,023 men, this top-secret unit was capable of simulating two whole divisions (approximately 30,000 men) and used inflatable rubber tanks and vehicles, fake radio traffic, sound effects, and even phony generals to fool German forces during the war’s final year. “It’s incredible to see a lifesized reproduction of one of the inflatable tanks used to fool the enemy from the air,” Weininger explains. “Soldiers could literally lift it up with their fingertips.” The exhibition details the 22 large-scale deceptions launched

by the Ghost Army from Normandy to the Rhine River between D-Day and the war’s end. Featured artifacts include artwork, uniforms, inflatable tanks and planes, as well as text panels detailing unit operations, profiles of unit officers, archival photography, and sketches that educate visitors on these unlikely heroes. Fashion designer Bill Blass, rock ‘n roll photographer Art Kane, and prolific painter Ellsworth Kelly are among the notable creatives who were a part of this special operation. Tales of the Ghost Army have been largely untold because files detailing this unit remained classified until the mid-1990s. “It was just this past February that President Biden signed a bill awarding the Congressional Gold Medal to this secretive unit,” says Weininger. “The Ghost Army has only just been officially recognized for their contribution to ending the war.” According to Weininger, the artwork left behind by the Ghost Army is one of the exhibit’s most beautiful surprises. “The artwork is especially wonderful,” she explains. “There are watercolors and drawings of the different places where these artists ventured throughout Germany and the people they encountered along the way. There is this special series of portraiture done of the people they were protecting in the displaced persons’ camps.” Within the Illinois Holo-

caust Museum’s exhibit of the Ghost Army will be four Ghost Army veterans from Illinois (there are only nine living veterans from this unit in the United States). One of these veterans, 98-year-old Bernie Bluestein of Schaumberg, is attending the exhibit’s opening on June 16. Before the unit began using inflatable tanks, Bluestein would paint on cloth draped over wooden tank frames. Rick Beyer, author of the book Ghost Army—on which the exhibit is based—will also be in attendance and will interview Bluestein about his experience. “Bernie is incredibly enthusiastic to be part of this event and so supportive of this exhibit,” says Weininger. “I can’t wait for visitors to hear his story.” Ghost Army: The Combat Con Artists of World War II is one example of the Illinois Holocaust Museum’s commitment to exhibits that will appeal to all members of a family and provide an experience they can enjoy together. “The more people we can draw into our museum,” adds Weininger, “the more access points we have for sharing the story of the Holocaust’s legacy.” Ghost Army: The Combat Con Artists of World War II will be open from June 16 through January 2, 2023. ultural institutions, like 01 individuals, inherently have certain strengths and weaknesses. Gaps in collections can hamper the direction of these institutions’ pursuits and purpose. Collector Dimitris Daskalopoulos hopes to address this dilemma by jointly gifting approximately 100 contemporary works to both the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA) and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Additionally, Tate in London and the Greek National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens will receive donations of hundreds of paintings, sculptures, and mixed media art. This concept of a multi-museum philanthropic merger has enabled the D.Daskalopoulos Collection to disperse widely and wisely. For example, the MCA will receive a select group of works created during the 1980s and 1990s, rounding out voids in its holdings of artists, mediums, and subject matters. Daskalopoulos, who is Greek and built a successful business, Vivartia, in his native country, now resides in Switzerland. Similarly, his presence within the art scene is impressively global. He developed a fondness for Chicago during his time as an MBA student at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. Over the years Daskalopoulos has maintained a sentimental connection to Chicago, further solidified by his recent donation and his seat on the MCA’s Board of Trustees. He sees MCA Pritzker Director Madeleine Grynsztejn as an “adviser” and values her leadership. The feeling appears to be mutual as Grynsztejn remarks, “Daskalopoulos shares the MCA’s dedication to harnessing the art of our time as a catalyst for critical thinking, social change, and reflection, marked by an unwavering belief that art expands our collective imagination.” Links to people and places have defined Daskalopoulos’ collection from its earliest 02 stages. Since 1994, he has long been interested in the portrayal

03

of humanity with an intent to ultimately see his collection grow and evolve in new settings. “I am not interested in having my name on a museum facade. There is no point or use in enforcing the permanent exhibition of the collection as I shaped it,” shares Daskalopoulos. “I wanted this private collection to become a public resource.” He has included funding for curatorial work at the museums as well as support for a shared post at the Guggenheim and MCA. “It’s important to note how unprecedented this collaboration is and the model it may become for the future of giving,” says Richard Armstrong, Director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation. “Daskalopoulos cares about civic responsibility and making art accessible.” He previously established NEON, a non-profit organization to increase the visibility and lending of contemporary art throughout Greece. Today, those efforts will not only cross continents but will also help to further unite the world of art, and perhaps, the world in general. DI N N E R DATE EJ’s Place owner E.J. Lenzi

THE SKOKIE RESTAURATEUR & THE SEA

EJ’s Place, the iconic Skokie steakhouse landmark, has grown increasingly popular with every passing year. One of the primary reasons? The steady guiding hand of owner E.J. Lenzi. WORDS BY PETER WREN / PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF EJ’S PLACE

DIN N E R DATE

I

n another life, restaurateur E.J. Lenzi would have been a hell of a travel agent. Lob the word “vacation” at him and the founder of EJ’s Place in Skokie will paint you a landscape portrait of his favorite escape, the island of Capri; a portrait so sumptuous it would make Canaletto drop his paintbrush. Capri is the definition, Lenzi insists, of earthly paradise: A breezy limbo—part heaven, part earth—that offers the perfect ratio of tranquil tanzanite waters, egg-yolk sunsets, and bustling family-owned Italian restaurants. Lenzi says that restaurants like La Fontelina on Capri make him want to be a better restaurateur. “Truly great restaurants make every aspect of a dining experience feel effortless. The food. The atmosphere. The service. You can’t pinpoint just one thing, but you feel completely taken care of—as if a kindness has been shown to you.” Heaven as a friendly family-run restaurant boasting really fresh fish? Yes, that’s very, very Italian, isn’t it? Yet perfectly understandable given Lenzi’s bloodline. His grandfather, Gene Michelotti, opened the legendary Gene & Georgetti’s in 1941. “I just loved him so much,” says Lenzi, who was whisked around Italy by his granddad as a young boy, so he could experience firsthand the exceptional service offered in landmarks like the Excelsior Hotel in Rome and the Palazzo Bauer in Venice. After a successful stint as a racecar driver, it was memories of sharing meals in his grandparents’ knotty-pine basement that inspired Lenzi to open EJ’s Place as a supper club-themed steak joint with a noticeably thick Italian-American accent. EJ’s Place opened in 1997. In restaurant years, this makes EJ’s the Methuselah of the North Shore. Pick your restaurant apocalypse: 9/11; the 2008 Financial Crisis; COVID Shutdown. Lenzi survived them all, skillfully avoiding the hundred-restaurant pileups that few others survived. The secret to long-term success? Lenzi has plenty of tips. But the most important one, he says, is something his grandfather taught him: encouraging people to try a place and convincing them to come back are two different skill sets. Most diners, Lenzi argues, return to dining rooms that they can claim—in some way—as their own, and tell their friends, “This is my place.” Gaining a foothold in the restaurant business, Lenzi concedes is tough. But part of the problem is that too many contemporary operators ascribe to business models built to try and rake in tons of money and then get out quickly. Seems a bit, to Lenzi’s mind, like they’re producing a Broadway play with plates and shiny silverware as props. Get me a light technician, some operators will shout, who can make my dining room feel like a Disney musical. Get me a set designer who can make the mise en scène of my kitchen worthy of a Tony Award. And the food! If the pork chop or pasta bowl doesn’t have a back story worthy of an Arthur Miller character, some will insist we’re in trouble. Maybe it really is an Instagram world, and we’re only dining in it. Nevertheless, Lenzi still does things his way. He enjoys the fact that an old payphone by his restrooms is constantly being used as a backdrop for social media posts. And that the tenure of

his waiters can often be measured in decades, not months. And that he still allows guests to choose complimentary rolls from a huge bread bowl and a complimentary soup or a salad with most entrées. Lenzi says he’s often asked by other operators to open up additional restaurants with them. But in the end, he’s said no because he is too much of a perfectionist. He firmly believes that his most daunting challenge is to ensure his regulars who’ve fallen in love with EJ’s Place stay in love with it. That is why he’s kept the same bar chairs and the same paintings for a quarter-century. “No one preserves anything anymore,” he says. “But we have. I love the fact that a kid who came in with his parents 20 years ago and ordered milk is now ordering a cocktail, sometimes from the same waiter who brought him that glass of milk.” So Lenzi labors on. He still walks the floor, answers the phones, and chats with everyone. When he needs a break, he’ll fly to Capri to compare what he’s achieved to what they’re doing at La Fontelina. For in doing so, he can continue to appreciate the beauty of things burnished by the passage of time, rather than the things that sway, in and out of the sunlight, on the whims of the current tide. EJ’s Place is located at 10027 Skokie Boulevard in Skokie, 847-9339800, ejsplaceskokie.com.

Why do EJ’s steaks—do try the 20-ounce New York Strip—taste so much richer than so many other steakhouse offerings? The kitchen, which orders from three hand-picked purveyors, butchers its meats in-house and uses a gas-ceramic broiler that Lenzi is convinced yields a better exterior crust than infrared-seared broilers. Add a little salt and pepper and the result is a steak that sizzles with ample juices sans any acrid or ashy char.

SERENE HAVEN

Caerula Mar Club is a Caribbean hideaway offering exceptional tranquility and Bahamian beauty.

A

WORDS BY DUSTIN O’REGAN

re you longing to escape from a fast-paced world? To find a slice of paradise and relax? Caerula Mar Club is the luxury boutique resort for you. Located on South Andros Island in the Bahamas, it is an easy trip from Chicago. We boarded a flight to Fort Lauderdale and a few hours later we popped over to Makers Air, a private charter airline company with the tagline— “connecting passengers to paradise.” The scenic flight to South Andros was just over an hour and proved the perfect vantage point to view many of the famous Bahamian “blue holes” —underwater cave systems famed for their azure centers and turquoise rims. After arriving at the quaint Congo TownQueen international airport, it was a four-minute drive to the

resort. Once past the Club’s gate, we meandered down a curving white gravel drive hugged on either side by dense, glossy hedges. Around a final curve, Caerula Mar emerged like a mirage. General managers and hospitality industry veterans, Ron and Margaret Gratzinger, greeted us like old friends. The resort’s emphasis on sustainable and natural materials evokes a “barefoot breezy” feel with a luxurious vibe—we couldn’t wait to kick off our shoes. Our refreshing welcome mocktails—bearing hints of grapefruit and pear—in hand, we headed to our beachfront villa. Soaring ceilings, pristine contemporary décor, soft white oak floors, and sumptuous linens welcomed us into the open-plan living area. Beyond the main bedroom was an immense marble bathroom with a shower sporting three showerheads and a bench—an indulgent way to wash away the sea’s salt and sand. The expansive villa

featured two bedrooms, a sitting area, and a large veranda. In the evenings, we often spent time on the latter listening to the ocean’s orchestra while engaged in games of Rummikub borrowed from the resort’s game room. Caerula Mar Club features three dining concepts. Switcha, the whimsical café and smoothie bar located just off the lobby, became our go-to for coffee and breakfast (the Acai bowls are a must). We selected poolside/oceanfront open-air Driffs as our daily lunch spot. Here we savored delicious salads topped with fresh catches of the day cooked Bahamian-style or, my husband’s favorite, a spicy fried chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries. According to both my husband and daughter, the fries are reason enough to return to this idyllic setting. Evenings were spent savoring Lusca’s curated daily menu featuring a fish, meat, and vegetarian entrée option. A favorite dish was the ginger and citrus-marinated ahi tuna, crusted with sesame seeds, served over rice noodles, with carrots, zucchini, onions, garlic, green

onions, and a hoisin sauce-sesame ponzu dressing—absolutely divine. Luckily, the dessert menu remained constant as we would have sorely missed our nightly selection of the chocolate pecan tart served with caramel, Chantilly cream, raspberry puree, and fresh berries. We did mix it up a bit one evening and ordered the peanut butter mousse served with grilled pineapple salsa and goat cheese with lavender ice cream; a dish that gave us a true appreciation for the chef ’s gift for perfectly pairing ingredients. Each day began on the beautiful Bahamian white sand beach. The long stretch of sand suited my husband’s extended runs and my daughter and my morning walks. The shade of the towering palms encouraged me to finish several books that had occupied my nightstand for weeks. The poolside hammocks offered a breezy alternate location for reading or just daydreaming. I spent hours in my suspended paradise swayed by the ocean breeze. On days we felt adventurous, we used the complimentary water sports equipment to test our balance on the stand-up paddleboards or take a spin in the kayaks. One afternoon, the three of us set off to explore the island on the resort bicycles and hiked four of the island’s blue holes. It was a lovely way to explore the island’s rocky terrain and become acquainted with the island’s friendly residents. When we passed a bus full of school children wearing bright blue uniforms and waving enthusiastically, it seemed they couldn’t have been happier to see us.

Caerula Mar Resort Reception at night

We also ventured off the resort grounds for a day of snorkeling. Our guides picked us up for a quick ride in an open-air Jeep to the dock where we made a stop at a local conch establishment to meet our restaurant proprietor/captain. Once on the water, we headed to a lagoon. Hopping into the pristine waters, we swam through a sea of tiny jellyfish – lucky for us, not of the stinging variety. We encountered an assortment of conch, lobster, and fish – favorites were the Queen Triggerfish and the Lionfish – both appearing as if dressed for some type of aquatic ball. The Queen looked as if she had spent hours perfecting her elaborately patterned eye makeup, and the Lionfish’s frilly fins resembled a glamorous “gown.” We also met up with turtles, and I was surprised to learn that the Bahamian turtles are quite speedy – very different from their leisurely brethren familiar to us from other locales. Several rays and starfish made an appearance in the shallower waters. In deeper areas, we visited the blue holes – these water-filled cave systems attract divers from all over the world. We did not get a chance to scuba dive, but diving is quite popular as the Andros Reef is one of the largest in the world and offers the purest Bahamian diving experience. According to island lore, these holes are home to the mythical sea monster known as Lusca. We were unable to test the veracity of this tale as Lusca chose not to greet us.

Returning to the resort via boat, we had the privilege to be the very first guests to step onto the resort’s newly renovated dock. The dock is just one of many projects highlighted in HGTV’s Island Renovation. This hit show documents the owners of Caerula Mar and renovation professionals Bryan and Sarah Baeumler’s purchase and restoration of this once-abandoned property. Spoiler alert … the end result is pretty extraordinary, and you might even catch a glimpse of our family as the show was filming during our visit. So, put down the remote control and seize an opportunity to relax, refresh, and renew on one of the Caribbean’s most beautiful, untouched, and bio-diverse destinations. fter stints with renowned designers in Chicago and New York, where Jennie Bishop managed all aspects of high-end residential projects from initial concept to final installation, she ventured out to create her own namesake firm, Jennie Bishop Design. “At first, I was going to make pillows,” says Bishop. “I did that for four months before I realized it had become a sweatshop instead of a fun hobby. I got two, then four, then more clients and then an email, a name, a file cabinet, and away we went.” Eventually she realized she wanted to grow, so she turned to her former colleagues Melissa Benham and Kristen Ekeland, and Studio Gild was born in February 2014. Their combined experience in commercial, retail, and residential design allows the collective to deliver refined interiors with enduring style.

“The stars aligned,” says Bishop. “We met off and on for six months, wondering if we could, if we should, and how we would. Then, we just did it. My motto has always been to jump into the pool and then check to see if there’s water.” Today, the trio’s design approach fosters unique artisan and client relationships while embracing an emphasis on thoughtful detailing. It is the meticulous gilding of each project that serves as a reflection of the firm’s trademark aesthetic and namesake. The resulting environments are curated, provocative, and timeless. While the Studio Gild team collectively agrees on a design philosophy that embraces clean architecture and subtle beauty, Bishop focuses on weaving clean lines and rich contrasts with deliberate pops of color and texture. Bishop offers a fresh approach to existing framework, ensuring each project aligns with her client’s needs and aesthetic.

Studio Gild has created spaces for a distinguished roster of clients from Los Angeles to New York to Puerto Rico to Canada. “Studio Gild still leans much more modern than traditional, in the purest sense,” explains Bishop. That’s why, when relocating from the city to Highland Park, a young family turned to Studio Gild for help designing their forever home—“whatever ‘forever’ means anymore,” laughs Bishop. They found the perfect lot overlooking a ravine (they tore down the existing home on the property) and hired their team: builder Red Rock Custom Homes, architecture firm Northworks, led by Lake Forest’s Austin DePree, and interior design firm Studio Gild. “They had a strong vision of what they wanted with Northworks from the onset,” says Bishop. “They wanted warmth in the wood exterior, stately limestone and stucco for lightness, and an abundance of glass in the rear to spotlight the views. For the interiors, we were tasked with tempering the starkness of the modern architecture with a textured and layered interior to ensure it never felt too cold.”

Moving from 2,400-square-feet in the city to more than 8,000-square-feet on the North Shore, the family brought just a few keepsakes with them and otherwise looked to Studio Gild for help filling the home. “The client was game for anything, open and daring,” says Bishop. “Nothing in this house is unaddressed. Every single thing you see was completely planned and specific to this home.” Even though Bishop describes the client as a little scared of color, there’s no lack of color and contrast in this house thanks to a collection of art Studio Gild consulted on for the project. Standouts include an Edward Lipsky piece—sourced through Alan Koppel Gallery—in the foyer that pairs perfectly with the chevron flooring and Gabriel Scott chandelier. The colors unintentionally match a sari silk area rug by Lee Jofa. “I’m obsessed with the deep pink,” says Bishop. “It’s so powerful and shocking to the space. The Ed Lipsky was the first piece of art purchased for the house.”

Studio Gild also worked with Carrie Secrist Gallery on an ink and oil painting by Whitney Bedford that sits under what Bishop calls a “remarkable element of the house,” the staircase designed by Northworks. “They knew how important it would be,” she adds. While not typically an important place to hang art, the piece draws the eye toward the wall of glass at the back of house, opening up the space. With 12-foot ceilings throughout, even in the basement, Studio Gild addressed every inch from floor to ceiling to guarantee the home would always feel cozy and comfortable despite its sprawling, semi-open floorplan. “It had to have human scale,” she says, describing the six-foot brass range hood in the kitchen, and the 25-foot ceilings in the subterranean sport court. Even so, elements like an exaggerated sofa custom-designed by Studio Gild in the living room, a dramatic fireplace, black-

and-white Schumacher wallpaper in the powder room, and myriad soft textiles all add a human element that keeps the home family-friendly. Eighteen slabs of imported limestone from Italy for the primary bath and 12 slabs of Calacatta Extra Gold for the kitchen took “years off my life,” laughs Bishop. “It took nine months to figure out two rooms of stone.” That said, the result is well worth the wait. “This project was a true, seamless, fun collaboration with Northworks and a dream from start to finish,” says Bishop of the two-and-a-half-year process. The word modern means nothing and everything at the same time. This project embodies modern design but with warmth, interest, and uniqueness.” For more information about Studio Gild, visit studiogild.com. For more information about Northworks, visit nwks.com.

PRACTICE MAKES PROGRESS: DRIVING ACT & SAT SCORE GROWTH Academic Approach CEO Matthew Pietrafetta, Ph.D. answers the question, “How many practice tests should I take to improve on the ACT or SAT?”

F

WORDS BY MATTHEW PIETRAFETTA / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR or more than 20 years, we have maintained that “Tests are standardized. Students are not,” so solutions vary by student. However, years of data reveal a striking trend when it comes to practice:

Matthew Pietrafetta

Our best performers take 5+ practice tests. Importantly, 60 to 70 percent of their growth happens after the first practice test, indicating that taking multiple practice tests and learning from them is the key to driving the greatest growth. Any student athlete, mathlete, or musician knows that getting your reps in allows for enhanced learning and more reliable performance on “game day.” This is an accepted truth, in general, but why is it true? Tests Enhance Learning Testing is often thought of as one summative moment that reflects the results of studying over time, but what can be overlooked is that testing is part of the learning process. Learning can be enhanced through testing: “Test-enhanced learning is the idea that the process of remembering concepts or facts—retrieving them from memory—increases long-term retention of those concepts or facts. This idea, also known as the testing effect, suggests that tests prompt learning when compared to studying.” (Roediger and Butler 2011; Roediger and Pyc 2012). For tests like the ACT and SAT that are summative of 7th through 11th grade curriculum, there’s a lot of material to learn and recall quickly and accurately. Therefore, taking practice tests to boost recall becomes an important part of a learning process. At Academic Approach, we recognize the positive impact of test-enhanced learning, so we use a combination of quizzes, homework, and both untimed and timed full-length practice tests to incorporate test-enhanced learning into our tutoring programs. ACT and SAT Score Choice In recent years, ACT and SAT developed Score Choice policies, which allow students to test multiple times and send only their best score to colleges. These policies protect the student, minimize stress, and allow students to retest to improve. While Score Choice has evolved for multiple reasons, the change supports research that students learn and improve through retesting. In fact, ACT has published its own research on retesting, highlighting two important findings: • 57 percent of students increase their composite scores when retesting. • Of the 10 test preparation practices investigated in ACT’s research, only the hours spent with a tutor had a significant impact on retesting results and score growth.

What’s important here is that practice testing alone does not necessarily drive growth; instead, growth requires testing and tutoring. It’s testing along with feedback from a tutor—analysis and instruction—that enhances learning and performance. Students who receive feedback after a test event can make changes, adapt, test again, and grow. It’s like watching tape of your performance in sports—the thoughtful review and critique drive change. As I’ve always said to my students, there is no true learning without the analysis of your errors. Progress is a Product of Practice At Academic Approach, we recognize that practice—along with feedback—makes progress. Test-enhanced learning helps grow test scores. Therefore, we thoughtfully incorporate testing into our instructional programs to drive the greatest learning and growth for our students. Contact us and we’ll schedule a practice test, analyze your student’s test results, and craft an expert plan for your student’s success. We’ll help you navigate the process, as we guide your student through a program of learning, testing, and analysis that drives score growth. Academic Approach has locations in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago and in Winnetka. North Shore students have successfully worked with Academic Approach instructors since 2001. olson Coors global vice president for Miller Family of Brands Sofia Colucci says that while her career might seem exciting today, it took a lot of failures and learning from her mistakes to get there. The child of two Uruguayan immigrants, the now North Shorebased marketer moved from Uruguay to Canada at just seven years old. And even though Colucci spent most of her upbringing in Canada, her South American roots are strong. “I grew up speaking Spanish and living in a very Uruguayan household,” she says. “The three things that have stuck with me are empathy and inclusivity, pragmatism, and a curiosity for the world around me. The Midwestern mentality and attitude feel very familiar.” Even though Colucci describes Canada as a “multicultural country that embraces different nationalities,” she says not fitting in immediately with other kids because of her accent helped hone her empathetic and inclusive personality. “I try to make immigrants feel supported,” says Colucci. “Sometimes that little extra can go a long way.” Growing up, Colucci’s parents encouraged her and her three siblings to pursue higher education and instilled a sense of hard work and pragmatism. The

siblings all took on part-time jobs at early ages. This led Colucci to have a range of experiences, from her first after-school job working at a brake pad factory to spending a summer working the night shift as a translator at a steel plant. “Those early experiences taught me the importance of hard work and, frankly, how lucky I was to be able to get a university education and pursue marketing,” says Colucci. “And even when I did end up in marketing my initial jobs weren’t glamorous. I went from marketing and innovating in bacon, to water, to oatmeal. While I am passionate about my work today, I didn’t start here.”

Vizzy Hard Seltzer. Photography by Soulsight

Colucci first discovered her passion for brand marketing working after-school at a Canadian drugstore Shoppers Drug Mart. While stocking shelves, she’d wonder how a company invented a particular flavor or brainstorm alternative names for brands. Today, she’s parlayed that innate curiosity into a nearly 20-year career in marketing. After joining the Molson Coors team in 2017, Colucci led the innovation team, which is the enterprise within Molson Coors that develops, tests, and launches new brands and products. Think familiar favorites like Vizzy Hard Seltzer (the first hard seltzer with Vitamin C) and Blue Moon LightSky (wheat beer with just 95 calories). Two years into the role, she made the jump to Miller and Economy brands, which account for a large portion of Molson Coors’ portfolio. “The fact that I ended up in alcohol isn’t a shock for my Canadian friends,”

says Colucci, who adds her Uruguayan roots instilled in her a love for music, food, wine, and, of course, beer. “Growing up, the Colucci house was the best party destination, as my parents were pretty cool and enjoyed talking to my friends over a glass of wine or beer.” The social aspect of working in beer is a big part of the job. Since business travel has picked up again this year, Colucci has traveled across North America to places ranging from Mexico City to film a new commercial for Miller Lite and Canada for a national sales conference to the Super Bowl in Los Angeles and Jazz Fest in New Orleans. For the Super Bowl, Colucci and her team had what she describes as an “amazing idea” that they were ultimately unable to execute. Instead, they quickly pivoted and pursued something even better: the Meta Lite Metaverse activation, a virtual bar for Miller Lite aficionados to watch the game, that quickly went viral. For the holidays, they launched Miller Lite “Beernaments”—and subsequently couldn’t keep up with the demand. “Something I deeply believe in is the concept of grit and failing forward, taking accountability, learning from mistakes, and using failures to make you stronger,” says Colucci. “As I look at my career, the accomplishments I’m actually the proudest of are when

my teams were able to learn from a failure and make something even better.” When Molson Coors launched Vizzy, the company had just discontinued a failed brand Cape Line but took those learnings to make Vizzy what it is today; that is, a top-five growth seltzer in the category. When they developed local advertising that wasn’t resonating, Colucci and her team pivoted to create the iconic ads featuring Miller Lite’s white cans set in notable landmarks, like the Chicago skyline. “Something I deeply enjoy is working through a strategy on a whiteboard with a team of smart people,” says Colucci. “That is the nerd in me. We move with incredible speed at Molson Coors, and I believe that enabling that behavior starts from the top. I take that responsibility very seriously.” Another responsibility Colucci takes seriously is that of being not only a female leader in business but a female leader in the business of beer. During the pandemic, the Molson Coors team knew some employees were trying to balance childcare along with their full-time jobs. So, Colucci reassured the women on her team and stayed true to her word. “The worry, of course, is that by ‘slowing down,’ women won’t get opportunities afterward,” explains Colucci. “One of my greatest sources of satisfaction last year was seeing a very talented woman on my team be able to ‘lean back in’ and get promoted post-pandemic craziness.” With that spirit in mind, coming soon from Molson Coors is a top-secret initiative celebrating women in beer. It further amplifies the work Molson Coors is doing to become a more inclusive company, or as they like to say, “inviting everyone to the bar.” That includes scholarship programs for Latino students and developing training materials for bars and restaurants to ensure they are being authentically inclusive to guests and staff who are LGBTQ+. “I’ve struggled with imposter syndrome my entire life, perhaps from being an immigrant or being a woman or just my driven personality,” says Colucci. “When I was early in my career, this wasn’t something people talked about, and we didn’t have the tools to deal with it. Now, it’s so important to me to be vulnerable and let young women know that I have doubted myself.” The lone woman in her household, too—she shares two boys, Joaquin (7) and Alejo (6), with her husband Jonathan—Colucci has instilled similar values in her family. Catch them at Glencoe Beach this summer, where she says Joaquin will happily hand you a Miller Lite or Blue Moon LightSky. “He will proudly tell you his mom makes these,” laughs Colucci. “Yes, my seven-year-old son promotes my product on the North Shore but, as long as he’s not actually drinking it, I’ll take it!” Cheers to that. EXMOOR Ready for Another GOLDEN MOMENT Iconic, Donald Ross-designed golf course in Highland Park is set to serve again as the host venue for the 120th Western Amateur Championship. WORDS BY BILL MCLEAN

A

t the 1904 Summer Olympics in Normandy, Missouri, 10 Western Golf Association men teed up for Team USA at a St. Louis suburb country club and collected gold. “Five of them,” Exmoor Country Club Historian and Deerfield resident Don Holton says, “were Exmoor members.” Another Exmoor member Chandler Egan added to Team USA’s medal count when he captured the silver medal in the individual segment of the Games. It was a banner year for Egan, who had earlier won the 1904 Western Amateur Championship at his home course in Highland Park. “Our club goes way back,” Holton, an Exmoor member for 34 years, says. Famed architect Donald Ross designed the course that covers the private, full-service club in 1915. “Exmoor is a classic golf course, with a variety of holes and imaginative bunkering,” Holton says, adding golf course designer Ron Prichard, recently retired, completed a substantial course restoration in 2003. “Donald Ross constructed holes that reminded him of golf course holes in Scotland, where he grew up. It features excellent par-5s, some of the best par-3s in the Chicago District, and short par-4s that aren’t as easy as they look. The Club’s new course architect Andrew Green has redesigned the 9th hole with classic Ross features, providing new and distinct challenges to the players,” explains Holton. “Of the 12 Donald Ross-designed golf courses in the Chicago area, we like to think of Exmoor as an authentic Donald Ross course.” Exmoor’s rich history, along with 156 of the best amateur golfers in the world, will be front and center again this summer as it hosts the 120th Western Amateur Championship from August 1 to 6. This will be the fourth time in history and the second time

since 2012 that the Championship, organized by the Western Golf Association (WGA) and the third-oldest amateur golf tournament in the world, has been hosted at Exmoor. A Western Amateur field first toured the track in 1952, with defending champion and 1947 Masters runner-up Frank Stranahan emerging as champion. Other former Western Amateur champions include Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Western Amateur Championship Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ben trophy. Photography courtesy of Exmoor Country Club Crenshaw, Justin Leonard, and Curtis Strange. But more than quality golf will be celebrated at the 120th Western Amateur. Both the WGA and Exmoor, a charter member of WGA’s founding in 1899, are committed to collegiate education. Since 1930, both have supported the Evans Scholars Foundation to award full tuition and housing for high-achieving caddies with limited financial means. Fittingly, the scholarship program is named after Exmoor member and celebrated golfer Charles “Chick” Evans (18901979), who joined the club at 19 and won the Western Amateur eight times from 1909 to 1923. Exmoor members and event sponsors exceeded the club’s goal to raise $500,000 to support this year’s Western Amateur and to fund two more endowed Evans Scholarships in the name of Exmoor. And they reached the lofty goal in January—in record time. “A phenomenal achievement,” Holton notes. Exmoor member, WGA Director, and collegiate golfer, Tom

Kearney started caddying at Beverly Country Club at the age of 11. After graduating from Brother Rice High School in Chicago, he earned an Evans Scholarship and enrolled at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (Class of 1968) as an accounting major. “I was still 16 years old in the first month of my freshman year in college,” says Kearney, an Exmoor member since 1978 and a former Exmoor golf chairman and treasurer. “I lived in chapter housing with 90 guys. The scholarship program is an amazing one, providing free housing and tuition for all four years for each recipient. But Evans Scholars have to work for meals, and I ended up working as a waiter for a sorority event, where I met my wife, Susan.” “Outside of being a part of my immediate family,” the Lake Forest resident adds, “the best thing that has ever happened to me was being named an Evans Scholar.” More than 11,500 young men and women have graduated from colleges as Evans Scholars. Nearly 1,100, including 14 Exmoor caddies, were enrolled in 21 leading universities nationwide during the 2021-2022 academic year. “The Evans Scholars Program continues to elevate the lives of young people by giving them opportunities to pursue degrees in college ... opportunities they wouldn’t have had without developing a sound work ethic and learning all kinds of life lessons through caddying,” Holton says. “Exmoor has always been an enthusiastic and consistent supporter of the Evans Scholars Foundation.” As Exmoor prepares to add another prestigious golf tournament to its club history, it does so with attention to detail and class. In other words: par for the course. About 400 members, Holton estimates, will volunteer as walking scorers, reception committee members, transportation aides, or “Home Stay” hosts for players. The six-day tournament begins with stroke play (72 holes, August

For spectators, it’ll be a rare opportunity to walk alongside players, and behind them and see outstanding golf up close. No ropes. No barriers whatsoever.” “They’ll get to hear players and caddies talk between shots,” he adds. “They’ll get to see high-quality shots while standing only 20 feet away.” For golf fans, the 120th Western Amateur Championship will be a historic experience—Exmoor’s salient quality. lden Hills Organic Farms owners Levi and Emily Powers are not what one would describe as typical farmers. In fact, neither of the so-called “city people” ever pictured they’d one day not only work on a farm but also run their own. When looking back on the couple’s upbringings, however, all of the signs pointed to this eventual outcome. Emily grew up visiting her grandparents’ dairy farm near Madison, Wisconsin, where she formed some of her most treasured childhood memories. Levi unintentionally ended up farming in college after his parents bought a small herd of cattle with the intention of raising food for their family, but it was never meant to become a working farm. “Emily and I don’t necessarily fit into most traditional farm molds,” says Levi. “There is a really cool revolution happening right now with more young people coming to farming with no prior experience, and I would say that we fit that.” Levi joined Alden Hills in 2014 as farm manager, previously working in the lighting industry. Emily became Alden Hills’ full-time farm co-manager, social media marketer, and the overall glue that holds the farm together in 2016 after working as a social worker. Together, they now manage about 500 acres near Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. “I found myself sitting in a cubicle every day and really didn’t enjoy that,” says Emily. “Even though social work was a very fulfilling career, I had a passion

for local food and knew that’s where I wanted to be.” Their favorite parts of the job? “Morning coffee and the ever-changing daily work challenges that come with life on a farm,” says Levi, and “Working with both the myriad farm animals and the farm customers,” says Emily. Alden Hills Organic Farms has one mission: to provide its customers and their families with the healthiest, highest-quality pastured meats that they can raise. They believe that wholly nourishing food comes from building a farm ecosystem that enhances both soil and animals. Alden Hills meats are Certified Organic and guaranteed grass-fed, grass-finished, and always out on pasture. “Certified Organic means that we don’t use any chemical pesticides or GMO inputs,” explains Levi. “We believe that raising food in a natural environment without chemicals is the only way to ensure healthy food.” Choosing to be Certified Organic is not an easy decision but it’s an important tenet for Alden Hills Farms. Levi and Emily believe that receiving a USDA seal of approval stands for something. It means that they are making a covenant with customers to be held accountable. The farm undergoes third party audits and assessments so customers can have confidence that the products are organically raised and GMO-free. The farm specializes in grass-fed beef, pastured

poultry, pastured pork and eggs, with weekly home delivery routes throughout Chicago and Milwaukee. Customers can also order online through aldenhillsorganicfarms.com or stop by the Walworth, Wisconsin farm store, which is open seven days a week. Grass-fed beef has been shown in studies to have lower “bad” fat levels while having more “good” fats (think Omega-3s) than corn-fed beef. It often tastes better, too: Grassfed beef offers juicy, flavorful, and tender beef. And because the beef isn’t pumped full of supplements, hormones, and genetically modified grains, the end result is better for both the customer and the animal. A few of the most popular Alden Hills items include farm-fresh Grade A eggs that combine great flavor with vibrant orange yolks; rich and flavorful bone broth that’s simmered for over 24 hours and is perfect for soups, flavoring meals, or even sipping on its own; tender, juicy, hand-trimmed, and dry-aged steaks, and savory pork sausages. Alden Hills also offers a selection of seafood and fish, syrups and honey, pet food, and more.

“We realized that we both had a deep passion for local food and took the opportunity to take the farm and turn it into an actual business,” explains Levi. “Everyone farms for different reasons, and we’ve found that we really want to raise the healthiest meat possible for our customers.” With two kids of their own, ages four and two, Levi and Emily are also committed to raising the next generation of farmers. This summer, they’ll offer a Friday kids’ farm class during which children will enjoy a hands-on experience with cows, chickens, hogs, sheep, rabbits, and bees. They’ll gather their own eggs, wrangle a chicken, and more. The duo says there’s no typical day on the farm— and that’s the way they like it. Often, they’re up at 4 a.m. for a quick coffee and planning session. Then, it’s everything from deliveries and making hay to packing orders and sales calls. “The things that never change are moving and feeding our animals,” says Levi. “A major part of being a pastured meat farm is that daily chores always involve moving animals to fresh forages, at least in the summer.” This summer, Alden Hills will offer a specialty Grill Master’s Box and Steak Night Box, both of which come with perfectly pastured and regeneratively raised grilling options. The farm also offers shares of meat, available starting in July. Thirty-five pounds of meat is included in 1/8th of a share. We have no beef with that. STRENGTHEN THE YOUTH

E

vanston native and former North Shore Country Day School student Lewis Simon was 20 years old when two words uttered by a doctor signaled the sudden end to his lifelong dream of playing college hockey and aspirations of being a professional athlete in the National Hockey League. At the time he was enrolled at Trinity College in Connecticut and committed to playing college hockey while receiving an elite education. “You’re done,” the physician informed Simon, a standout goaltender who had suffered a series of concussions at a young age but was first diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) at 18. The news devastated Simon, now 23 and a Learning and Organizational Change major at Northwestern University. “Right after hearing that,” Simon recalls, “I looked at my parents (Lake Forest residents Josh and Diane) and said, ‘Hockey was my whole life. What am I going to do now?’” Mr. and Mrs. Simon assured their son he’d find another pursuit. They were right. Simon, essentially, is still Adler Zanowski, Lewis making saves—this time as the Simon, and Rory Knapp founder of the venture STY (Strengthen The Youth) House. STY House, launched in early 2021 while Simon was a fulltime student at Northwestern, started as a men’s athletic clothing line. The brand expanded into a youth apparel line which Simon infused with his passion to address the long-lasting effects of concussions and other TBIs experienced by many young athletes. Simon’s goal, via education and awareness as well as a partnership with the Concussion Legacy Foundation (CLF), is to save youth hockey players and athletes in other contact sports from the pain and the uncertainties related to post-concussion syndrome, and the conflicting medical opinions that he absorbed as a promising AAA and Junior goaltender. “I was cleared to continue playing, multiple times, by the team’s medical staff,” says Simon, who moved, at the age of 16, to Pennsylvania to compete for a AAA team he had been recruited by before battling for Junior teams in New Jersey and New York. “These professionals that you should be able to trust told me, ‘You’re fine.’” But he wasn’t. Post-concussive symptoms lingered, lingered, and lingered. Experiencing double vision in locker rooms and in vehicles frightened Simon. Phone calls home resulted in a return to Illinois and appointments with doctors. “To this day I am still prone to symptoms,” says Simon. “My professors at Northwestern have been super supportive. I was upfront with them before I enrolled in their classes, so if I’m ever absent they know why,” he explains. “My message to kids in all sports is, ‘If you get hit in the head and you don’t feel right, stop. Leave the rink or leave the field.’ It makes no sense to stay in a game or a practice after any kind of

head injury. Through STY House, if I hear about a kid from, say, Texas, and a concussion is a concern, I’ll encourage that kid to hop on Zoom and talk it out with me. I’m more than willing to listen and advise.” Josh and Diane couldn’t be prouder of their son. Recording three consecutive shutouts in elite hockey games? That ranks well below the fearless shift Lewis made after retiring his goalie mask and pads. “As a parent, you never want to squash your child’s dreams,” says Diane, whose marketing firm, Java Culture, helped STY House establish a presence on a number of platforms and hone the brand’s purpose and meaning. “My husband and I have always admired Lewis’ work ethic and aspirations, and we never missed a game. You’ve heard the joke about moms of hockey goalies making kick saves while watching from the stands ... well, that was me,” she laughs. “Time heals,” adds the parent of a Michigan State University student, Sofia Simon, another former hockey marvel. “Lewis’ health is getting better. It was wonderful, first hearing of his decision to apply to a college like Northwestern and then learning he’d been accepted. It was such a successful pivot in his life. He’s great with people, he establishes tremendous connections, and we’re thrilled that he serves as a coach and a mentor, all while attending college and running STY House.” Simon is on track to graduate from Northwestern in 2024, with the aim to land a job as a sports agent shortly thereafter. He recently completed an internship with Los Angeles-based Wasserman, a sports marketing and talent management company. Simon, who also mentors and coaches youngsters in skates, is currently working hard—he knows no other way to toil—on growing STY House’s Ambassador Program. “I’m planning to videotape professional players from the NHL, NFL, and NBA, after asking them to give advice to youth on a range of subjects, from taking care of their bodies to developing a strong work ethic,” says Simon, who has always been “super tight” with his parents and praised them for fully supporting STY House. “If the pro athletes want to share what they went through as an athlete with a concussion, great. I’ll then edit each tape down to one minute,” he says. “STY House,” he continues, “has been my main outlet, and such a good outlet, since hockey was taken away from me. I love giving back, building concussion awareness, and educating young athletes and their parents. You know what’s really exciting to me? I’m still in the game.” Visit styhouse.com for more information. Follow STY House on Instagram @sty.house.

PUBLISHER’S PROFILE

LEADING AND GIVING Lincoln Park’s number one luxury broker, Emily Sachs Wong, is passionate about real estate, leading a strong team, and giving back. WORDS BY ROCHELLE NEWMAN RUBINOFF PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR

E

mily Sachs Wong has always been drawn to the service industry. She began her career in hospitality, working for Lettuce Entertain You at the iconic original Bub City, then the Rock Bottom Brewery. Not surprisingly, she found herself working literally all the time. “I was working as hard as anyone possibly could, all day and all night.” Ultimately, she wanted to get into a business where she could have a little more time to do other things. After encouragement from her family (her father was a developer and her sister was a broker), she decided to give real estate a try. Of course, the irony that she thought she’d have more free time as a broker is not lost on Wong—but she absolutely loves this field and has never looked back. Part of what led Wong to become one of the top brokers in the city is a true passion for all things real estate. Wong says she “loves the history of old houses and the neighborhoods—I’m just a huge history buff. That’s what really attracted me to real estate.” What keeps her there and is one of the true keys to her success? “I love the psychology that goes into real estate, from all different aspects. It’s a very emotional time for people and I understand that and it makes me very attuned to their needs. Either you get psychology or you don’t. I happen to get it. Small details, hints that people are giving you about how they’re feeling. A lot of brokers just blow past that and don’t understand it, but it’s probably the biggest part of why someone does or doesn’t buy a house.” Wong is Lincoln Park’s number one luxury broker and has formed a team of women that she works with to cover the entire Chicagoland area. While her main specialty is Lincoln Park, her subspecialties include the Southport Corridor, Bucktown, Wicker Park, and the Gold Coast. If a potential client comes to her who is interested in a different area of the city, Wong refers the business to associates.

Wong said it’s just by chance that she has formed this strong all-female team. “I’m not opposed to working with men in any way. I just happened to have met some wonderful women brokers over the years and other women have started with me and kind of used me as a place for training. And it’s worked out really well because I have a team of very educated and knowledgeable women and we’re able to help a variety of customers.” Wong says that her business has grown and changed quite a bit over the years. “When I first started, I was not a luxury agent. My first sale was a tiny studio in an apartment building. But over time, sellers become buyers and they grow and decide to get nicer houses. I’ve been lucky to have relationships with them and grow with their families.” Wong estimates that 90 percent of her business is a combination of repeat customers and word-of-mouth referrals. Obviously, Wong works hard to keep these relationships strong. “I love sending gifts and treats to my clients, all year long, not just at the holidays.” In addition, she does a lot of mailings to keep clients filled in with what’s going on in the market. Wong has made giving back a priority. There are two causes that are especially meaningful to her. One of her favorite causes is the elderly. “I feel like it’s a forgotten group of people. I’d like to help everyone.” She is also very involved with Care for Friends, an organization that helps the homeless and people facing food insecurity. “One of my favorite reasons to work is to be able to give more. I really like helping others and I feel that the more I work, the more I make, the more I can give.” Emily Sachs Wong’s @properties office is located at 1211 W. Webster in Chicago. Plastic Surgery Update: REVISION BREAST SURGERY

M

any women have undergone some type of breast surgery either for cosmetic or reconstructive purposes. Most of these surgeries are very successful but unfortunately for some either the initial outcome falls short of their desire or over time the breast becomes distorted or hard. In the case of breast augmentation, the body forms scar tissue around the implants, which is normal but sometimes the scar tissue contracts making the implant feel firmer. This is referred to as a capsule. The appearance also becomes distorted. Other complications include bottoming out, fold malposition, wrinkling and rippling, and symmastia. With time sagging of the overlying breast tissue is not uncommon creating a disconnect with the underlying implant. And of course, a woman’s breast naturally will change shape and contour as the body ages. Natural conditions such as lax skin elasticity, thin tissue, and multiple corrective procedures often pose technical and special challenges. If you are unhappy with the outcome of prior surgery, revision surgery may be in order. Patients need to understand that revision surgery is complex and technically demanding. There are limitations based on one’s anatomy and what can be achieved. Technologies have evolved over the years to help correct the described complications and deformities that can occur. The use of STRATTICE™ is a soft, natural product that is designed to reinforce weak tissue and to support growth of your own tissue. Derived from porcine dermis, it is a strong and sterile product. Advantages provided by this internal support are: • Provides coverage and support of the implant • Significantly reduces the rate of capsular contracture • Acts as an “internal bra” to give better support and control implant location • Provides an additional layer to mask visibility of rippling and wrinkles • Becomes viable tissue without scarring or fibrosis

The one drawback of STRATTICE™ is that it is expensive, but in my experience, it is well worth the cost if it significantly cuts down on the need for future revisions. PARTING WORDS

THE BEAT GOES ON Lauren McClusky, founder of Nelarusky—the charity concert benefiting Special Olympics—reflects on 15 years of doing good through live music. WORDS BY ANN MARIE SCHEIDLER / ILLUSTRATION BY ROBERT RISKO

S

ometimes being in the right place at the right time can be life-changing. Woodlands Academy alum Lauren McClusky would most definitely agree. McClusky’s life-changing moment occurred as a high school sophomore during a visit to her father’s office. McClusky’s dad, Jeff, is the founder and CEO of Jeff McClusky & Associates ( JMA)—one of the country’s largest comprehensive entertainment promotion and artist exposure companies. “My dad was advising an upand-coming high school band called The Days,” McClusky recalls. “We all began talking about the possibility of us working together on an event that would bring high schoolers together to raise money for a charitable cause.” The project became a collaborative effort spearheaded by McClusky, with volunteers from several Chicago-area high schools who would meet weekly leading up to the event. Deciding on a charity was easy because McClusky’s family had long been involved with Special Olympics Illinois. Her father sits on the board, and the entire family volunteers in the group’s music initiatives, entertainment events, and fundraising efforts around the world. Each year since 2007 (with the exception of 2020 due to COVID-19), McClusky has produced Nelarusky, the Official Aftershow of Lollapalooza—Chicago’s largest summer music festival. To date, the event has raised more than $450,000 for Special Olympics. “Nelarusky is just the letters of my name all mixed up,” says McClusky with a laugh. The event showcases both local and na-

tional acts through an annual benefit concert at Metro, the iconic Chicago concert hall. The first two Nelarusky events (then called McFest) featured bands from local Chicago high schools and drew more than 800 students on a Sunday afternoon. Today, Nelarusky has grown to encompass nationally known bands like Imagine Dragons, Alabama Shakes, Omar Apollo, Cold War Kids, Kali Uchis, and many other artists playing to sold-out crowds of 1,150 attendees. The event often sells out within minutes after the tickets go on sale. This year, Nelarusky will take place on July 26. At press time, the bands for this year’s show had not been announced. “Staying true to our roots, we always feature a Chicago act as our opener. And our remaining performers never disappoint. It takes a lot to produce this event in addition to my full-time job, but it’s such a passion project and generates so much excitement for Special Olympics—I can’t imagine not doing it,” shares McClusky, who now resides in Nashville and currently works in Music Brand Partnerships at United Talent Agency. “The whole event is absolutely amazing, but the real magic is when we present the check to the Special Olympics Global Messengers,” says McClusky. “I always get so nervous to get on stage in front of a big crowd, but you can feel the support that people have for this organization and standing with the global messengers takes all of my nerves away.” For more information, visit facebook.com/Nelarusky, or to make a donation, visit soill.donordrive.com/event/nelarusky22.
