ur December/January issue toasts the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024 with tales of high-powered, creative women and one family’s quest to find a cure for type 1 diabetes. Our first feature highlights Winnetka’s Victoria Malkin who oversees a $600 million business with Cushman & Wakefield. Victoria is a recent addition to the North Shore, and we welcome her, husband Jesse Van Dyke, and son Alexander to our community. Swapping real estate deals for manuscripts, our second feature introduces JoAnna Novak—author, poet, professor, wife, and mother. Juggling deadlines, syllabuses, a recent move, and a toddler, JoAnna shares how she transcribes the chaos of life into beautiful prose. Trading novels for scripts, our next feature focuses a lens on Winnetka’s documentary filmmaker Anna Gardner who recounts her journey to founding Gardner Productions. Our final feature catches up with the Wolfe family who is this year’s JDRF Fund a Cure family. Shore vs. City introduces Highland Park’s Stacey Flaster—an award-winning director, choreographer, and acting coach. Between opening nights, Stacey shares her go-tos on the shore and in the city. A delight for the eyes is found in Art & Artist where photographer Barbara Morley shares her artistic process. Packing our bags for an adventurous stay at SB Winemaker’s House & Spa Suites, First Class explores Argentina’s incredible topography, wine, cuisine, art, and accommodations in Mendoza, the country’s beloved wine region.
We close the issue with one of my favorite people, Bob Crawford. The Lake Forest resident shares how at age 85 he isn’t even considering retirement. Rather, he is on a mission to support budding entrepreneurs with his Neighborhood Entrepreneurship Lab.

E S QU IR E The Strategic Divorce Process: Step 5
DIVISION OF MARITAL ASSETS AND DEBTS WORDS BY MICHONE RIEWER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATRINA WITTKAMP / STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA
I
believe knowledge of the divorce process provides strength and peace of mind to those facing an often complicated and difficult time. This goal of education inspired me to write The Strategic Divorce Process™. My book breaks divorce into five distinct steps when children are involved and two distinct steps when no children are involved. These steps are: 1. Making Decisions for Your Children; 2. Visitation; 3. Child Support; 4. Maintenance; and 5. Division of Marital Assets and Debts. In this month’s column, we examine the final component of the marital settlement agreement and the divorce itself—the division of marital assets and debts. This process begins by collecting financial information through the discovery process. The parties exchange financial affidavits and supporting financial statements so that both sides have enough information to define the financial situation accurately. The next step is creating a spreadsheet that shows the value of each marital asset and debt so that the total value of the estate can be determined. The final step is an equitable division that allows each spouse to walk away with a combination that adds up to roughly the same value and tax consequence, regardless of what they each retain. We start by determining what marital debt, if any, exists. The secured debt is paired with the asset that it secures and the net value of the asset is figured into the spreadsheet. For example, if one party keeps the house, that party will also be keeping any debt associated with it. Next is credit card debt, unsecured personal loans, bank loans, debt consolidation loans, and student loans taken out for a child. The amount of marital debt present, regardless of whose name it is in, is added to the spreadsheet. However, whoever’s name the credit card is in will likely be the party responsible for paying that debt but they will either receive an asset of similar value or the other party will receive debt of a similar value to keep the ultimate division of assets equal. Next, we make a list of the marital assets that were acquired during the marriage. We categorize these assets based on the tax consequences that would occur if the asset was converted to cash. After all the assets and debts have been identified, the lawyers divide them. The assets that have no tax consequences (non-qualified), including checking accounts, savings accounts, cars, and the marital residence, often are offset with debts. Non-qualified assets and debts are the first group that gets divided. Qualified assets are assets that do have tax consequences when converted to cash. This typically includes retirement accounts, such as a 401(k), 403(b), 457(b) or a traditional IRA. Investment properties, stocks, and investment portfolios often have tax consequences as well, but what exactly those tax consequences are is often specific to each individual investment.
Michone Riewer
While these tax consequences can be avoided when dividing the marital estate because transfers between spouses do not trigger a taxable event, it’s important to know what the tax consequences would be if the asset were converted to cash, because it will affect its future value. The next step is to determine which spouse will receive each asset and each debt. Generally speaking, the value of the assets and debts are divided evenly, unless the parties are negotiating with something else, like a larger maintenance payment, the length of maintenance, guilt from infidelity during the marriage, or guilt from choosing to end the marriage. Dividing the marital estate can be very simple, or very complex depending on the circumstances surrounding it and the mindsets of each party. The Strategic Divorce Process aims to simplify the division as much as possible as we believe it lowers the emotional, mental, and financial burdens of divorce. Michone Riewer is an attorney with Strategic Divorce in Lake Bluff, 847-234-4445, strategicdivorce.com.

MEANINGFUL RESULTS Wilmette’s F.J. Phillips has built his career with Merrill Lynch Wealth Management on the tenet of driving financial outcomes for clients with impact and purpose.
A
WORDS BY ANN MARIE SCHEIDLER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN MCLEOD
s a young man, it was never part of F.J. Phillips’s life plan to one day raise his family in the town he grew up in—Wilmette. “Both of my parents were raised in the same part of Wilmette. We have lots of roots in this area going back to the mid-40s,” Phillips says. “My kids are now the third generation to attend Central School.” But after his freshman year in college where he was studying to be an architect, Phillips returned to Wilmette to deal with a financial crisis his family was facing. The crisis, which resulted in the sale of his childhood home and some very difficult decisions, taught him at a young age about the devastating effects that result from a lack of financial planning. “When things were finally settled at home and I could return to college, I changed my major from architecture to finance,” Phillips says. “I wanted to see if I could help others avoid some of the same pitfalls we experienced.” After Phillips graduated from college in 1997, he joined Merrill Lynch. “Once I got through the training, I went to work building a business of my own,” he remembers. “Then one day I was sitting at my desk when Tom [Kilborn, today’s Managing Director of Kilborn Phillips & Associates] tapped me on the shoulder and told me that his business was growing, that he needed help, and that he wanted me to come and work with him. I didn’t hesitate for one moment.” Phillips mentored under Kilborn for a few years before growing into an equity partner in what ultimately became Kilborn Phillips & Associates where he is now Senior Vice President and Wealth Management Advisor. The group’s focus is comprehensive multi-generational wealth management and retirement planning. They strive to make a difference in clients’ financial lives by prompting them to understand opportunities and risks. Phillip’s ability to simplify complicated financial strategies allows his clients to make informed decisions. “We have an approach that’s really grounded in identifying and meeting our client’s needs,” says Phillips. “We don’t lead with a product. We do a deep dive with our clients to determine the best financial plan for them.” Phillips says the most productive client onboarding sessions begin with a yellow pad of paper and the acronym “LISA:” · Lifestyle · Income · Savings · Assets. “People can be intimidated by the financial planning process,” he says. “But if we break it down to these four things, our clients are much more receptive, and we can come up with an initial plan that becomes a working document. Nobody can tell you what things will look like in 20 years, but we have a series of decisions we can make today and a number of levers that we can pull. A visual depiction of this can be very powerful.”
F.J. Phillips
“COVID taught us a lot of lessons and reinforced the importance of not emotionally reacting to a volatile market,” he says. “I know the conversations I had with my clients would have been very different had we not spent so much time talking in the beginning about the financial security they were building.” “There was definitely an unseen, gravitational pull that brought my family back to Wilmette,” Phillips says. When it was time for our growing family to make the move from the city, my wife fell in love with Wilmette and knew this was where our family should be.” “I want my clients to trust that I will take the same care and concern with their financial future that I do for my own family,” he says. “My clients should expect nothing less.” For more information, visit fa.ml.com/kilborn-phillips.

We’re Thankful for You!
We moved to the North Shore 13 years ago, and we love living, working, and raising our family here. As the year comes to a close, we want to thank you, our community, for making the North Shore such a wonderful place to live and work. Now more than ever, our area has proven to be a highly desirable location in Chicagoland, and it’s largely due to the welcoming atmosphere found here. People want to live here, and we feel lucky to call it home. This community wouldn’t be possible without you, so from our family to yours, we wish you a happy holiday season.

e’re all toting cameras these days, but not everyone is a photographer. True, the technology we hold in our hands can make even the most snapshotty picture look good. But there’s more to a photo than good looks. It’s not always easy to say what that is, but most of us know it when we see it. And you see it in the work of Lake Bluff resident Barbara Morley. Morley was raised in Evanston. “I spent summers at the beach, had lots of friends, invented stories, and put on shows in my next-door neighbor’s playhouse,” she shares. “My absolute best friend was my dog, Cooky.” Keen on history, art, anthropology, and world cultures growing up, she took a degree in ecumenical religion, then moved to Colorado with a few friends and wondered what to do next. “One afternoon, while walking by myself in the beautiful great outdoors, I had a sudden inspiration to be a photographer.”

Morley headed back to the Midwest, got a job at a Buick dealership in Wilmette, and signed up for two photography courses at Columbia College. She learned how to develop and print black and white film and loved it. Working from a dark room in her Winnetka apartment, she launched into a program of self-study and two years later, with a solid portfolio in hand, went looking for work. She landed a job as an assistant in a commercial photography studio in the city. Other gigs followed, including one as a fashion stylist, an experience that played a key role in developing her visual sensibility. After the birth of her first daughter, Morley settled in Lake Bluff and launched a successful business photographing children. Over time, she widened her scope. “After years of basically only shooting faces, I had an intuition to photograph the snowy egrets that nest in Winter Park, Florida, near my brother and sister-in-law’s home.” Nature soon became a central subject. But not in a National Geographic sort of way. Rather, it was patterns and structures that engaged her eye. And still do. “One of the many books that I’m reading is An Immense World by the Pulitzer Prize Award-winning science writer, Ed Yong. It informs us that every animal has a unique way of seeing and being in the world. With my photographs, I hope I am seeing nature in my own unique way.”

Morley began shooting with a 35mm Minolta, graduated to a Hasselblad, and then to her favorite, a Pentax Medium Format. “I was late to digital. I think it was around 2005 that I bought my first digital Canon camera. It completely opened up a new world for me.” Morley not only migrated from black and white to color but reveled in the instantaneous and the ability to manipulate images on the computer. Operating within both the fine art and commercial worlds, Morley’s work ranges widely from images of animals that read as Irving Penn fashion spreads to kaleidoscopic renderings of water and sky to painterly interpretations of flowers and trees to fanciful romantic narratives inspired by the look and mood of 1920s Paris. “Being a fashion stylist,” notes Morley, “greatly influences how I see, how I shoot—whether portraits, performers, naturescapes, or animals. I’m always looking for the most beautiful angle, the most flattering lighting, even with birds, goats, or zebras.” Photographers can never quite give their eyes a rest. After all, the universe never stops offering up something worth seeing. Whether it’s a face in the street or a wave hitting the shore, the subjects are endless. As the rest of us hunker down and dream of spring, Morley will be heading outside, to meet the world as it slumbers. “My next project is shooting the prairie in the winter. I have visions of peace and tranquility in mind.” For more information, visit bmorley.com. SHERIDAN ROAD 60

After seven cross-country moves and several years living in Stockholm, JESSICA MONTGOMERY and her family decided to call Winnetka home. Originally from the East Coast, she and her husband met at Virginia Tech. As their careers started to unfold, the couple found themselves traveling the world. Montgomery began her career in education, but a passion for meeting new people led to a pivot into the admissions field. She works in Evanston at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and is often inspired by the students. She and her husband, Brian, have two wonderful boys and an Aussiedoodle named Piper. Across their moves, the two have strived to build connections with those around them and invest in their communities. Montgomery, therefore, is actively involved at North Shore Country Day School and was honored to serve on the Executive Committee of the North Shore Board of the Northwestern Settlement, a cause that resonates with her because she believes outdoor experiences are transformative for children and teens. She co-chaired the nonprofit’s 2023 House in the Wood Gala, “An Evening Under the Stars,” raising money to fund outdoor STEM education programs and a traditional summer camp experience for the children and youth of Chicago. Pausing from her many commitments, Montgomery shares how she stays current in her professional and personal worlds. ON HER NIGHTSTAND “On a recent trip to Europe, I devoured The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles. Towles is an extraordinary storyteller, and this book was full of unexpected twists and turns. Despite its length, I didn’t want the story to end. Up next is Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver, which was recommended by a friend.” ON HER MOBILE “Besides reading The New York Times each morning and keeping up on Poets&Quants for work, I enjoy a steady stream of food, fashion, fitness, and travel on my Instagram feed. Some of my favorites are @j.cathell, @beautyofaboymom, @halfbakedharvest, and @ the.next.tripp. Another joy of being a boy mom is following Formula 1 Racing (Go Mercedes!) and keeping up with my fantasy football team.”

THE CLOSET TREASURE HUNTER Luxury handbags & couture auctions with Hindman’s Tanner Branson.
WORDS BY TANNER BRANSON / PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATRINA WITTKAMP / STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA
I
often say that my favorite place in the home is the closet. Going into clients’ closets throughout the country, I often feel like a treasure hunter who gets to uncover hidden gems and give them new life by bringing them to auction. I love nothing more than when clients share the experiences they had wearing their pieces and the smiles on their faces at the prospect of someone else getting to create new experiences with them. I come from the fashion world having worked for some of the top luxury houses and my new role at Hindman gives me the opportunity to combine my endless passion for luxury and deep knowledge of fashion history. The auction world is where I am meant to be. From a young age, I had an interest in auctions, so to say this role is a dream job is an understatement. I began my time in Chicago attending Columbia College Chicago where I received a bachelor’s degree in Fashion Business. While at Columbia I was exposed to haute couture garments and had the opportunity to familiarize myself with examples of high fashion, learning about construction techniques, and much more. This has greatly contributed to my professional career and provided me with a sharp eye that I now use every day at Hindman. My role as Head of Sale and Specialist in Hindman’s Luxury Handbags & Couture department allows me to curate luxury sales with an assortment of couture treasures that speak to the latest trends not only in fashion but in collecting. Our Holiday Fashion auction was the first auction I’ve gotten to curate from start to finish. The sale was filled with luxury handbags and examples of high fashion from leading names in luxury, whether bidders were hunting for an exotic skin Hermès bag or a unique dress for their next soirée. I was particularly fond of the fabulous collection of Birkin and Kelly bags offered in the auction, especially an exceptional Hermès Birkin 35 in Shiny Porosus Crocodile. This exceptionally rare dual-tone was one of the Hermès Birkin 35 Shiny finest examples of an exotic Porosus Crocodile, 2007 skin Birkin that I have ever had the good fortune to handle and is sure to become a favorite of the buyer. For those with an avant-garde flair, there were rare examples of Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto, and Jean Paul Gaultier, taking bidders on a style journey spanning more than forty years. Most of the collection was purchased through the former Oak Street fashion emporium Ultimo,

a boutique that was known for outfitting the dangerously chic. The collection was steeped in not only fashion history but also Chicago history. Speaking of history, Holiday Fashion also featured a single-owner collection of Bob Mackie gowns, including a duplicate of the iconic gown that Cher wore to the 1985 Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which she attended with Mackie himself. The sequin-encrusted and bugle-beaded gown was perfect for anyone looking to make an unforgettable impression at a holiday gala. I wake up every day in disbelief that my job is to handle such extraordinary pieces. I hope one day you’ll give me the pleasure of hunting for treasure in your closet but if you’re still in a buying mood, have I got just the piece for you! ARABIAN LAMB PIES
A
WORDS, PHOTOGRAPHY, AND FOOD STYLING BY MONICA KASS ROGERS
lthough familiar comforts like mac and cheese, chili, and slow roasts can bring warmth on cold winter nights, now and then I like to spice things up at the dinner table with something more exotic. These little pies do just that. Seasoned with bzar, an Emirati mixture of ten spices that has an almost garam masala-like flavor, plus onion, leek, cilantro, and tahini in the lamb filling, the pies are exquisitely flavorful. I’ve made these with ground beef as an alternative, and you can too—but ground lamb is our family favorite. I prepare the yeasted dough for the crusts first, then make the bzar while the dough rises. In the Emirates, bzar is often made right before Ramadan, a month of fasting, prayer, and community observed by Muslims across the world. Choose freshly bought spices for the blend and you’ll be rewarded with the best flavor. (The recipe makes enough spice blend to last you all winter.) I love the inclusion of tahini in the lamb filling as it adds nutty depth to the flavor.
Makes 8, 5-inch pies and 1 1/2 cups bzar spice blend FOR THE BZAR SPICE BLEND: • 1/2 cup whole Tellicherry black peppercorns • 1/2 cup whole cumin seeds • 1/2 cup whole coriander seeds • 2 tablespoons whole cloves • 2 Ceylon (or Saigon) cinnamon sticks, broken into small pieces to make 2 tablespoons • 2 tablespoons whole green cardamom pods • 3 chiles de arbol, seeds and stems discarded • 2 whole nutmegs • 2 tablespoons ground ginger • 2 tablespoons ground turmeric FOR THE PIE CRUSTS: • 1 1/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour • 1 1/3 cups whole wheat flour • 1/4 cup whole milk powder • 2 teaspoons bzar

R E CI PE • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt • 2 1/4 teaspoons instant, fast-acting yeast granules (1 packet) • 1 teaspoon sugar • 1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon warm water • 3 1/2 tablespoons melted butter or ghee (clarified butter), cooled to room temperature • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil • 1 large egg, room temperature FOR THE LAMB FILLING: • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil • 1 large onion finely chopped to make 1 cup • 2 pounds ground lamb OR beef • 2 teaspoons fresh cracked black pepper • 1 fresh leek, washed, stem and dark green parts discarded, white and yellow portion thinly sliced • 3 tablespoons tahini (note: stir tahini in its jar, or pour into a bowl and pulse with an immersion blender to mix oil with solids before using) • 1 tablespoon black vinegar OR aged balsamic vinegar • 1 tablespoon water • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 small bunch cilantro, stems discarded, leaves finely chopped to make 1/4 cup FOR THE EGGWASH AND SESAME TOPPING: • 1 large egg mixed with 1 teaspoon water • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds FOR EXTRA TAHINI SAUCE TO SERVE AT TABLE: • 3 tablespoons tahini (note: stir tahini well in its jar (or remove into a bowl and pulse with an immersion blender to mix oil with solids before using) • 1 tablespoon black vinegar OR aged balsamic vinegar • 1 tablespoon water • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 small bunch cilantro, stems discarded, leaves finely chopped to make 1/4 cup METHOD MAKE THE PIE CRUST: In a large bowl, mix all-purpose and whole wheat flours with milk powder, bzar, baking powder, and salt. In a small bowl, bloom the yeast with the sugar in 1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon of water. Make a well in the flour/dried milk mixture and pour in the bloomed yeast/sugar water, melted butter, and egg. Mix until you have a rough dough. Scoop dough onto a clean, lightly floured work surface and knead until smooth. Shape dough into a ball, place into a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and allow to rest for 15 minutes while you grind the spices. MAKE THE BZAR SPICE BLEND: Working one spice at a time, grind each of the first seven spices into a fine powder in a spice grinder and combine in a bowl. Grind the nutmeg by hand with a microplane. Add ground ginger and turmeric last. Stir all to combine and scoop all into an airtight glass jar (it will keep for up to a year, stored in a dark place).
FINISH MAKING CRUST: After resting the dough for 15 minutes, knead again for 3 to 5 minutes. Shape the dough into a ball and replace in the lightly oiled bowl. Cover with a clean cloth or plastic wrap and let rise in a warm, draft-free place for 1 1/2 hours. MAKE LAMB FILLING: During the last 20 minutes of rising time for the crust, make the lamb filling. In a large skillet over medium heat, add oil and onions and cook, stirring often until onions are soft and golden brown—about 10 minutes. Add ground lamb and cook, breaking up the meat and stirring until the meat is browned and excess liquid has cooked off. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Scoop the meat into a bowl to cool. Stir in chopped leeks. In a separate bowl, stir tahini, vinegar, and 1 tablespoon water until smooth. Stir mixture into the lamb; add cilantro. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed. ASSEMBLE PIES: Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Grease eight mini pie pans (5” wide x 1” deep) with shortening or vegetable oil spray. Divide the risen dough into 8 pieces. Shape each into a ball. Cover all with lightly dampened kitchen towels and allow to rest for 15 more minutes. Place a dough ball on a clean work surface and roll out into a 7-inch circle. Tuck dough into pie dish. Repeat with remaining dough balls and pie dishes. Divide lamb filling into the eight dishes. Brush all with egg wash. Sprinkle the top of each pie with sesame seeds. Bake for 20 to 30 minutes until crusts are golden brown. Eat hot, or at room temperature. Serve the pies with a big green salad and some extra cilantro and tahini sauce for the table.

A VINTNER’S DREAM
The main estate at SB Winemaker’s House & Spa Suites in Argentina
Argentina’s first female winemaker, Susana Balbo, has opened a new adults-only hotel located in the famed wine region of Mendoza. SB Winemaker’s House & Spa Suites offers an exquisite destination for gastronomes, oenophiles, and adventure seekers. WORDS BY DUSTIN O’REGAN
I
have always loved Argentina for its cultural combination of European customs and Latin American traditions, its diverse landscapes that include forests, deserts, mountains, and thousands of miles of ocean shoreline, and its similar time zone making jet lag a nonissue. This, however, was my first trip to the heart of Argentina’s wine country, Mendoza; a visit that made me fall in love with this South American gem all over again. My hostess, Susana Balbo, is the owner of one of the country’s most successful wineries and the recipient of numerous international awards. She has dedicated four decades to the wine industry overcoming numerous obstacles in the male-dominated business to achieve her distinguished position as the country’s first female winemaker. The winery is family-run by Susana and her children José and Ana.
During the pandemic, Balbo and her daughter, Ana Lovaglio Balbo, decided to create a luxury boutique hotel on the site of Ana’s former home. The frequent and globe-trotting travelers hoped to combine the best features of their favorite hotels with the intimacy of a stay with a dear friend. Although the mother-daughter duo works in the family winemaking business together, opening SB Winemaker’s House & Spa Suites in the spring of 2022 marked their first foray into hospitality. For transit, I chose Copa Airlines because of its modernity and 90+ percent on-time performance rate. After a short 30-minute drive from the Mendoza airport, we approached a dramatic black gate on a quiet residential street. The gate slowly opened to reveal a tree-lined brick lane leading toward the Winemaker’s House, a stately mansion surrounded by seven spa suites.

As we entered the estate through a courtyard, we were greeted by Sergio Roggerone’s Tree of Life. This enormous work of art is rich in symbolism as the vibrant flowers symbolize strength and femininity, entrepreneurship, and women’s empowerment while the birds represent family—two perfect symbols for this mother-daughter endeavor. As Balbo explained how the artwork reflected her life, it became evident that spirituality, love, and consciousness would permeate every aspect of the property’s design. Another work paying homage to Balbo’s extraordinary career hangs in the modern living room. Mujer Rural, a black-and-white photograph by Brazilian artist Sebastião Ribeiro Salgado Júnior, was a gift to Balbo for her work presiding over the W20 Summit as a congresswoman for Argentina. The room was also home to several pieces crafted from the property’s fallen trees including two mammoth pieces of petrified wood that flanked the fireplace. Beyond the living room, I found a dining room, a wine cellar with top Argentine and global wines, a separate room for the
Chef ’s Table experience, a cozy bar, and a tasting room. Outside, a heated pool and expansive kitchen/outdoor dining area sprawled across the property. As we left the main house, undulating pathways led to the seven glass-walled suites tucked behind volcanic rock walls. Each suite is aligned with one of the seven chakras. My suite—number 2—represented the second chakra, “courage.” The expansive quarters boasted a warm, neutral color palette except for the couch and artwork, which bore the golden hues associated with the suite’s chakra. In alignment with Balbo’s goal of women empowerment, much of the property’s furniture, furnishings, and accessories are produced by female entrepreneurs. My suite’s décor incorporated local leather and natural materials, a highlight being the traditional blankets of dyed llama wool made by rural Argentinian women. I was over the moon to discover that the suite contained a sauna, a steam room (that doubled as an experience shower), a massage table, and an enormous egg-shaped bathtub surrounded by glass walls. The bathtub overlooked a private garden with a café table, two heated tile-embossed recliners, and a fire pit. Once settled, a masseuse arrived for the 15-minute “welcome massage.” Unlike the cursory welcome neck massages offered at many luxury hotels, this was a full body massage including my head and feet—a dream greeting for the weary traveler.

We then moved to the family’s dining room for a dinner punctuated by laughter and toasts. The family’s second ranch, Rancho é Cuero, is located high in the Andes. An exhilarating, hour-long drive took us pummeling through streams, over bumpy terrain, and around switchback roads. Upon arrival, we encountered scenery so beautiful it seemed like a movie set. Quaint ranch houses stand on the edge of a rock-bottom stream beloved by fly fishermen. Golden grass peppers the rocky floor and billows in the wind, framing snow-covered, mist-shrouded peaks wearing a beard of shrubbery. Atop my Criollo, the native horse of the Pampas known for its long-distance endurance, I followed a gaucho through rivers, around a huge body of water, and up and up into the mountains. The gaucho explained that if we continued our trek, we would end up in Chile as the Palma property extends to the Chilean border and even contains a glacier! Donning wool ponchos, we rejoined our hosts for post-ride fireside appetizers followed by a feast of wine, salads, and barbecued Argentinian meats at the outdoor pavilion while serenaded by the rushing river.
A highlight was a gastronomic journey inspired by the hotel’s signature art piece, Tree of Life. anama City has location, location, location in its favor. As the connecting point between the Americas, Panama City’s airport sees flights daily from more than 80 destinations. Why not treat your layover like a vacation by breaking up the trip and visiting one of Central America’s most metropolitan cities? With historic architecture, ultramarine seas, and dense tropical forests, there is plenty to experience. If you are a history buff, I recommend booking a guided city tour with Ancon Expeditions of Panama. Our knowledgeable and fun guide helped us discover a city that is a study in contrasts—towering downtown skyscrapers pay homage to the modern age while two interior sections are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Casco Viejo (“old quarter”) is a gorgeous, walled, colonial city full of history and flavor, and Panama Viejo is an archaeological site that preserves the ruins of Old Panama City, which was founded in 1519 but later destroyed by pirates. Be sure to ascend the Cathedral Tower for outstanding views and visit the beautifully curated museum, which outlines the country’s history in an easy manner. An absolute must on your itinerary is the Panama Canal, recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. It draws tourists from around the globe, making it the most visited attraction in the country. An admission ticket includes a fascinating documentary, A Land Divided, A World United, about the building of the canal—the only one of its kind to connect the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean, dramatically shortening transit routes. Perhaps history lessons leave you yawning while nature quickens your pulse? No worries, the city has several natural parks for hiking and wildlife observation. The city views from the Metropolitan Park, a tropical forest sanctuary, are breath-stealing. Don’t be surprised if you glimpse a sloth or two. the Panama Canal’s construction. You’ll find several coastal services here offering fishing charters or ferries to the Pearl Islands, an archipelago consisting of more than 200 islands and islets. A great place to stay is The Santa Maria. Located within the city’s coveted Santa Maria Golf & Country Club, the resort not only immerses its guests in luxurious amenities but is just minutes from the airport, Casco Viejo, Panama Viejo, and the Panama Canal. While Santa Maria is home to several eateries, my favorite was the Mestizo Restaurant serving Panamanian-Mediterranean fusion cuisine and the city’s best Sunday brunch. The tantalizing dining concepts are complemented by an expansive pool, a locally inspired spa, a workout facility, and plenty of space to play—from the 18-hole Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course to tennis and basketball courts. The rooms boast Luxury Collection beds, Le Chemin products, and beautiful views. If you are passing through Panama City en route to your final destination—stop and stay. Copa Airlines has a Panama Stopover program that enables travelers to make the most of their stopover in Panama City for up to seven days without paying any additional airfare. There is so much more to see than just the airport. Viajes felices! For more information visit, thesantamariahotel.com, anconexpeditions. com, and copaair.com.

xecuting a traditional interior scheme might seem like a snap. After all, we know what Federal, Craftsman, or Mid-Century Modern styles are all about. But there’s more than one way to take a cue from architecture. And for designer Claire Staszak, giving a contemporary Georgian a sympathetic look meant adding a few pages of her own to the playbook. Set on the savanna very near the historic Elawa Farm in Lake Forest, the red brick property—designed by Melichar Architects—has been recognized by the Lake Forest Preservation Foundation for the felicity of its architecture. It is now home to a family of four who had moved back to the North Shore after
living in Arizona. “The style in Arizona is certainly more contemporary and perhaps even trendy, compared to the North Shore,” observes Staszak. “My clients were ready for a more formal home and feeling, but certainly not über-traditionalist by any means.” Staszak carried out that brief with singular flair, embracing the home’s essential profile while investing it with bright flourishes. While she and her clients were very much on the same page, Staszak did her designer’s best to push the envelope with her choices of wallpaper, drapery, and lighting fixtures. In the dining room, for example, she applied a densely patterned botanical paper from Cole & Son and hung a “Lorelei” chandelier by Julie Neill, the foxglove-like pendants of which play perfectly with the leaves and blooms of the wallpaper. When it came to the

bold window treatment, Staszak took inspiration from a project by Atlanta-based designer, Suzanne Kasler. “It had the sunniest yellow drapes I had ever seen,” she shares. “I could not get that bright yellow out of my head. I had to push everyone to go with the yellow and did a Photoshop rendering to illustrate the visual difference between classic and safe and cheerful and fashion-forward. And they said go for it.” “A house with such lovely architecture is a joy to decorate,” says Staszak, who enhanced the existing character of the home by introducing all new flooring—including a classic harlequin scheme in marble for the foyer—and repainting the kitchen cabinetry. She transformed a closet in the dining room into a dry bar (her clients love to entertain) and brought The study’s walls are painted in a kind of somber whimsy to Farrow & Ball’s inky “Hague Blue.” a powder room, hanging two mirrors at right angles over the corner sink and covering the walls in a black and white lion’s head wallpaper. Throughout the house, Staszak practiced a measured restraint. Neither maximalist nor minimalist, these interiors are wonderfully balanced. Utterly welcoming and unmistakably stylish, they impress without being insistently impressive. And isn’t that what home is all about? ontemporary and nature-inspired design elements seamlessly blend at Optima Verdana, a new boutique rental community by Optima, Inc. comprised of 100 well-appointed homes in charming downtown Wilmette. With a name derived from “verdure,” meaning lush vegetation, Optima Verdana’s exterior and courtyard are draped in cascading greenery set amongst a sleek, contemporary glass facade. Using Optima’s proprietary vertical landscaping system, the greenery also helps oxygenate the air, manage stormwater, reduce dust and smog, and quiet ambient noise. Optima Verdana’s groundbreaking green design enhances not only one’s sense of well-being but also their home aesthetic, says Optima founder and CEO, David Hovey Sr., FAIA. “This unique interplay between the natural elements and architecture infuses nature into all aspects of a resident’s life and represents a commitment to sustainability and wellness.” Styled with modern furnishings, Optima Verdana’s lobby opens onto a verdant courtyard with trees, shrubs, and native grasses. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the views while bathing the interiors of the spacious, thoughtfully designed one, two- and three-bedroom and penthouse units in natural daylight. Offering many of the benefits of single-family living, the expansive apartments boast wide-plank flooring, gourmet kitchens with Fisher & Paykel appliances, and spa-like primary bathrooms with sculptural soaking tubs and separate water closets. Many residences have private terraces with quick-heating electric grills and, in select units, firepits. The community amenity areas are equally well-curated to accommodate every lifestyle and interest. The seventh-floor sky deck is home to a heated, glass-enclosed swimming pool with retractable walls designed for year-round use and a separate spa and sauna. Just outside, lush plantings define the open-air terraces equipped with barbecues, herb gardens, multiple seating areas, firepits, and a bocce court. “Whether you’re enjoying the greenery from your private terrace or taking in sweeping tree-top vistas from Optima Verdana’s landscaped sky deck, nature is always close at hand,” Hovey says. indoor amenities also impress. The community includes multiple conference rooms, a library lounge, an indoor pickleball/basketball court, a fitness center, a yoga room, a massage room, a residents’ club with a chef ’s kitchen, a designated card/game room, a sports lounge with golf simulator, a children’s playroom, and a pet spa. In addition, residents enjoy the convenience of a 24-hour door person and best-in-class services including white-glove, in-home package delivery, grocery delivery, on-demand plant watering, housekeeping, pet care, fitness classes, and massage services. A secure underground garage features 176 parking spots and on-site electric vehicle charging. Optima Verdana’s proximity to downtown Wilmette’s dining scene, boutique shopping, and a Metra commuter rail station may tempt some to forgo car ownership altogether. “Optima Verdana delivers an unmatched residential experience, combining a level of design, service, and sophistication with an exceptional location in the heart of Chicago’s bucolic North Shore,” says Hovey. “It’s an unprecedented opportunity to enjoy the best in suburban living in a vibrant, walkable community with the low-maintenance lifestyle and flexibility that only renting can afford.” For more information about Optima Verdana, please visit optimaverdana.com.

Paul L. Armstrong, owner of Winnetka-based Edward A. Anderson Company, celebrates the business’ 110th year by continuing to provide clients with high-quality home building and remodeling services. WORDS BY MITCH HURST / PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF DEVELOPPHOTOGRAPHY

Complete Home Makeover in Winnetka
tudies show nearly half of all businesses fail in the first five years. This year, Edward A. Anderson Company (EAA), a custom remodeler in Winnetka, marked its 110th year—an achievement that speaks both to the company’s quality of work and to the legacy of its founder. The company’s owner, Paul L. Armstrong, represents the fourth generation of the family who started the business. He acquired EAA in 2003 after working closely with Anderson’s great-grandson, Jim F. Anderson, whom Armstrong is related to through family lineage, immersing himself in the day-to-day inner workings of the company. Armstrong majored in architecture at the University of Illinois and during his junior year studied at the world-renowned École des Beaux-Arts in France, a year that had an influential impact on his thinking about architecture. “We studied architecture and I saw firsthand how people from other backgrounds throughout Europe would make their homes as comfortable as possible for their families,” Armstrong says. “I got a really good sense of classic architecture and what ‘home’ really means.” After graduating, Armstrong went to work for an architecture firm in Chicago run by Dirk Lohan, grandson of the famous architect Mies van der Rohe. The firm hired Armstrong for his experience in residential architecture, and he won a number of awards, including the Aspiring Young Architect Award in 1987 from the American Institute of Architects. In the late 1990s, he worked for a well-known North Shore builder as the Director of Design overseeing the design and construction of high-end luxury homes that were being built as part
2023 Cooks Tour Featured New Home
of the Glenview Naval Air Station redevelopment. Being in charge of approving good designs fueled his desire to do both design and build, and the key to doing that was to own his own company. Since purchasing EAA, he has reinvigorated it, building on its century-old reputation for excellence and classic craftsmanship. What differentiates the company’s approach to designing, building, and remodeling homes is that everything is, so to speak, under one roof. Clients have a point person, Armstrong, to work with from concept to construction. That’s just as important with a home remodel, a key focus of the company’s business, as it is with new home builds. Armstrong says it offers flexibility to clients, who can choose to work with the company for only the design or only the construction of the project. “A big reason we like to do both is managing costs. I truly believe the best possible process is to have an architect like me who understands the design side but is also a builder who understands the build side,” Armstrong says. “We can give clients a cost estimate much earlier in the process.” Capable cost management combined with the company’s long and successful history of helping clients build just the right place to call home, or to remodel their current home to make it their own makes EAA a smart choice. “A testament to our good work is the many second-generation clients we work with, and that’s because we stay true to our founder’s original inspiration,” Armstrong says. “The best in skilled labor, the finest materials, excellent trade partners, and the highest in ethical practices.” For more information, visit andersonbuilt.com, 847-446-1648.

Victoria Malkin is right at home in the world of commercial real estate.

s Regional President, Central at global real estate services giant, Cushman & Wakefield, Victoria Malkin oversees a $600 million business. Charged with growth planning, client care, brokerage talent development, and performance management, she carries a hefty responsibility. She’s more than up to the challenge, having built a strong foundation that prepared her for leadership. Malkin studied Human and Organizational Design at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. “My education was rooted in the liberal arts and sciences and focused on problem-solving, I think it really prepared me for corporate America.” While living in Music City, she developed a love of country music, honky-tonks, and tailgating. “Vanderbilt,” she says, “is a magical place in one of the most fun cities.” After graduating, Malkin started her career at JMB Realty, the renowned private real estate company owned by her uncle, Judd Malkin, and his partner Neil Bluhm. She then moved to JLL where she learned the commercial brokerage business. When an opportunity arose to lead the Chicago marketing team at Cushman & Wakefield in 2016, she took it. “I wanted to be at C&W because it was a challenger brand with significant momentum.” Malkin’s momentum at the firm was appreciable. Within two years, she was promoted to lead the East Region Marketing organization. Two years later, she was given the opportunity to head the Americas Marketing & Research organization. “I reorganized and rebuilt the 450-person team, focusing on aligning resources with business priorities,” recalls Malkin. “Together with my partners, we built a best-in-class organization, and I’m incredibly proud of what we accomplished. I started in the role just before COVID-19 and led the team through some of the most complex real estate challenges in history.” Those challenges certainly haven’t gone away. “The office market faces a number of headwinds,” asserts Malkin. “We’ve seen a flight to quality, where tenants take less space in favor of highly

amenitized workplaces, most often in well-located, new or renovated buildings. The Loop and the suburbs both have their share of vacant and subleased office space in older Class A and in Class B and C buildings. That space will either need to be updated, or it will be reimagined by new ownership. We’re starting to see suburban malls reexamined for mixed-use redevelopment, with additional residential or experiential components.” With a portfolio that ranges from Texas to Canada, Malkin is well-positioned to read the singularities of individual metropolitan markets. “Chicago has an incredibly diversified economy, with a strong backbone of industrial and logistics. You have life sciences and biotech, especially driven by agriculture, in Kansas City and St. Louis, along with a sizable healthcare cluster. Dallas, Austin, and Houston have long since branched out beyond the energy sector—Texas has some of the fastest-growing cities in the country. And with the Twin Cities, you have Fortune 500 head-

quarters and a diversified economy that are the economic engines for the Northern Plains. Each market has unique advantages and clients, and we build around serving their needs. We’re a global firm and many of our clients work across markets, geographies, and product types. My job is to partner with our people across our platform and service lines to make sure they’re aligned and equipped to exceed those clients’ expectations.” As a female executive in a male-dominated industry, Malkin is committed to making the commercial brokerage ranks more diverse, equal, and supportive of women and other under-represented groups. She serves as Executive Sponsor of Cushman & Wakefield’s Parents & Caregivers Together (PACT) group, a critical employee support resource, and is a leader and mentor in the firm’s Women’s Integrated Network (WIN), a group that develops and supports women by providing a platform focused on developing female fee-earners and leaders, supporting diverse perspectives. “And as the parent of a young child, as a working mom, and as a native Chicagoan, I’m passionate about children, families, and healthcare initiatives that make an impact. I’m proud to be a member of the Children’s Service Board, a philanthropic organization dedicated to supporting vital programs at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital.”
“I wanted to be at Cushman & Wakefield because it was a challenger brand with significant momentum.” Raised in the city, Malkin moved to Winnetka with her husband, Jesse Van Dyke, and their toddler, Alexander, in October. The couple are enjoying getting acquainted with the North Shore, trying out restaurants, attending live music events with their music-fanatic son, taking long bike rides, and renovating their 1910 house. “I’ve always lived in very urban neighborhoods, so it’s exciting to create a suburban home just for our family,” says Malkin, who is working with Marli Jones and Michael Kreuser of Rebel House Design to honor the historic nature of the property. “We want to make this our forever home.”

After discovering her truth in the New Mexico desert, Chicago author JoAnna Novak returns to the North Shore. WORDS BY EILEEN G’SELL / PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES GUSTIN STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA / HAIR & MAKEUP BY MARGARETA KOMLENAC
I
t’s a brisk, sun-blanched morning, and I’m walking from River North to the Ukrainian Village to check out Kasama, the Michelin-starred Filipino joint recently featured on Hulu’s The Bear. On the way, I pass Augusta and Paulina’s Auto Repair and indulge in the fantasy that the spot is run by two female mechanics—complicated, scrappy women who look great in coveralls and are unafraid to get their hands dirty.
Such a premise would well suit a story by JoAnna Novak—be it short fiction (her collection Meaningful Work came out in 2021) or a novel (her debut, I Must Have You, was released in 2017). Novak’s narratives are packed with unexpected female protagonists as difficult as they are daring. To call them “heroines” feels imprecise; Novak doesn’t attempt to morally justify, let alone heroize, her characters’ motives or actions. She instead lets them fret, rage, second-guess, manipulate, and stew. Novak doesn’t just allow women a full range of emotions, savory or not, she celebrates their capacity to implode yet survive, to crash into the highway medians of life, only to exit via hatchback and hitch a ride out of state.

I’m meeting Novak in the Kasama brunch line because we share a penchant for imaginative pastries and extravagant people-watching. I’ve known the author and poet for 13 years, and have dined with her in Brooklyn, Albany, New Haven, Kansas City, and Los Angeles. But this is the first time we’ve broken bread (or, in this case, black truffle croissants) in her hometown. After two decades away—pursuing a Bachelor of Arts at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, a Master of Fine Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, another in Amherst, Massachusetts, and a forthcoming Ph.D. at the University of Southern California—Novak has returned to the Windy City with her husband, 3-year-old son, and feisty Chihuahua Papillon mix. Making a home in Evanston, Novak approaches this new chapter with characteristic curiosity. “Evanston, and all of the North Shore, really, is so rich with mystery and natural beauty,” she tells me. “I get ideas when I’m running along Lake Michigan, especially when the waves rival those on Venice Beach.” Novak’s most recent book, her first memoir, is called Contradiction Days, inspired in part by the author’s obsession with abstract painter Agnes Martin, who fled the New York art scene in 1967, packing up her art studio, giving away her materials, and disappearing in a pickup truck only to resurface in Taos, New Mexico 18 months later. In title alone, Contradiction Days speaks to the complexity of both Martin and its paradoxical narrator. Now 38, Novak is a quiet person with a provocative mind, a fashion maven who frequents public libraries, a culture vulture entirely absent from social media. Her refulgent condo—housed in a former SHERIDAN ROAD 95

Nabisco factory—radiates an airy buoyancy at odds with the darker impulses of her writing. It’s also a 180 from the sage-brushed desert topography of Taos, where Novak took her family in 2019 four months before her son was born to embrace a “life of renunciation.” And also, of course, to write a book. Like any Novakian literary venture, Contradiction Days is no beachside read. Novak is not a beachy person (don’t let the Chanel espadrilles fool you). Chronicling the author’s brutal experience of perinatal depression, the memoir is a beautiful, disquieting account of toggling between the demands of a creative life and those of literally creating life as a mother. “It was hard enough to be a human being,” the narrator reflects, “... but hardest of all becoming a mother when you’re a woman human being whose reproductive urges have been satisfied by her art.” And how did she push through it—reaching for the “positive freedom” that the artist-mystic Martin espoused? With typical Midwestern grit. “Discipline was an expectation and a virtue in my home,” she explains. “Being ‘off the streets and out of trouble,’ as my grandmother liked to joke, was a pathway to imperviousness. Of course, imperviousness is sort of overrated, but I had to learn that the hard way.” These days, life remains contradictory, but on the whole feels much more tranquil. Every morning, Hewn Bakery beckons Novak from a few blocks over. Her son is enrolled in pre-K at the same school where her husband teaches English. “My office looks out onto treetops and train tracks,” she describes. “In the mornings, it seems like there’s nothing but sky.” For more information, visit joannanovak.com. ONCE UPON A TIME Winnetka’s Anna Chadwick Gardner shares her extraordinary gift for storytelling as the Executive Producer of Chicago Stories. WORDS BY ANN MARIE SCHEIDLER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES GUSTIN STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA / HAIR & MAKEUP BY LEANNA ERNEST
W
hen Anna Chadwick Gardner was a young professional living in New York in the late 1990s, she knew she had a story to tell. “I graduated from Tulane with a degree in finance, and the job market was booming,” says Gardner, who now lives in Winnetka with her husband and three children. “There were so many job opportunities that I decided to move to New York City and see what I could do.” Gardner then spent several years working in management consulting. Yet, even as her star was clearly on the rise, Gardner felt adrift. “I had always thought that writing and journalism would be part of my career path in some way—but as I moved forward in consulting, I moved further away from this idea,” she says. “Crunching numbers and creating spreadsheets wasn’t what I wanted to be doing. I couldn’t let go of the thought that there was something more for me.” So, she made the decision to pivot professions and moved to Chicago to get her master’s degree at Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism.
When Gardner graduated from Medill, she accepted an associate producer role with Kurtis Productions, a Chicago-based production company founded in 1987 by award-winning journalist and Chicago legend, Bill Kurtis. Kurtis, along with his partner Donna LaPietra, created the company as a way to tell riveting, inspiring, informative, and provocative stories. “It was a great job, but I had to pay my dues and work my way up,” Gardner remembers. And she did so quickly. It was at Kurtis Productions where Gardner began to hone her craft as a documentarian working on the Emmy-nominated series Cold Case Files. “Talk about an amazing training ground,” she says. “Cold Case Files was the first of its kind—not like today where there are tons of true crime shows. We were producing 30 episodes a year—30 hours of programming per year. I was traveling out of town on shoots two weeks a month. That’s insane when I think about it today. But we had an incredible team, and we were so proud of the work we were doing.” Gardner went on to produce more than 30 documentaries in her nearly 20 years with Kurtis Productions. They have aired on networks including CNBC, A&E, Discovery, and Investigation Discovery. Show credits also include CNBC’s American Greed, a

documentary series Gardner helped launch back in 2007, which is now in its 15th season. She was the producer and writer for the widely popular documentary Fyre Festival about Billy McFarland, who fraudulently launched a luxury music festival in the Bahamas, as well as story producer for The Decline of a Dynasty, a docuseries about the Murdaughs, a prominent South Carolina family that was brought down by murder and greed. “Frauds, schemes, and con stories are certainly having a moment,” Gardner says. “Viewers can’t seem to get enough.” Gardner approaches all her projects with skill, curiosity, and authenticity. She navigates complex subject matters ranging from serial fraudsters and FBI agents to families of murder victims and survivors of heinous sexual assault to politicians and CEOs. “To say working in television production can be intense would be understating it,” says Gardner in her gentle, but authoritative way. When you hear her speak, it’s easy to imagine that she astutely manages tight budgets—and even tighter deadlines—while still being a joy to work with. After the birth of Gardner’s first daughter, she took on more of a freelance role with Kurtis. “Bill and Donna have always been so good to me,” she says. “Kurtis has been like a second home. I was fortunate to be able to raise my kids, but also have rewarding work
that I could continue to return to.” With the arrival of her third child, Gardner knew it was time to take a little break. She and her husband moved to Winnetka and became immersed in the North Shore community that has been home to her extended family for years. “When I was ready to go back after a four-year hiatus, I decided to start my own venture,” Gardner says. “I kind of had to reinvent myself and put myself out there in a new way.” Gardner launched her production company—Gardner Productions. “Having my own company gave me the freedom to take on new projects,” she says. Under her eponymous shingle, she created productions for streaming, corporate, and nonprofit clients including Hulu, Kohl Children’s Museum of Greater Chicago, and the Chicago Cubs. “I was doing all of this great work when I got a referral from a colleague that PBS/WTTW needed an executive producer for the Emmy Award-winning documentary series Chicago Stories,” Gardner explains. “The timing was all wrong, but I was offered the job and decided to take a risk. It was supposed to be an eightmonth gig, but that was 17 months ago and we were just renewed for another season.” As the Executive Producer, Gardner oversees the entirety of the

series’ creation—from research and development to story pitching, budgeting, field producing, scripting, managing deadlines, interfacing with legal and promotional teams, and managing the post-production process. “Chicago Stories has been a lot,” she explains. “The role is challenging, and it was hard not to get in my head about the responsibilities and expectations. But it’s been some of the most satisfying production work of my career.” The latest season of Chicago Stories premiered this fall to rave reviews. The eight episodes range from a heartbreaking profile of the 1958 Our Lady of the Angels School fire where 92 children perished to Candy Capital, a fun and sweet look through the candy companies that began in Chicago (think Mars, Wrigley, Brach’s), to a look at Mayor Richard J. Daley’s ambitious urban renewal plan that reshaped and modernized downtown, but also displaced poor communities and perpetuated racial segregation. If you missed them, the films are streaming on the PBS app and at wttw.com/chicagostories.
Gardner credits part of the success of working on this series to the fact that PBS/WTTW is a publicly funded station. “At PBS/ WTTW, it’s truly about the content. It’s about finding and telling a really good story. The metrics and ad dollars don’t dictate the work we do. That’s an incredible gift.” While Gardner continues to grapple with the push and pull of balancing motherhood with a successful career, she is grateful to have built a personal and professional life that allows her the flexibility to be fully engrossed in her family while producing television she’s immensely proud of. “I don’t know what my career will look like in two years, or five years, or 10 years down the road,” she says. “But I could never have predicted that taking that chance on myself and switching careers would have brought me to where I am today. Life keeps me guessing and that’s a good thing.” To learn more about Anna Chadwick Gardner, visit gardner-productions.com.

hances are there’s a chill in the air as you read this. But as the holiday season approaches, our hearts are warm as we anticipate happy times with family and friends. And in this season of goodwill and good cheer, good causes gain a special appreciation. Inked indelibly into the calendars of many generous folks is the JDRF Illinois One Dream Gala. Taking place December 9 at McCormick Place, this annual fundraiser supports type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and ongoing efforts to improve the lives of the approximately 1.3 million people living with type 1 diabetes in the United States. Founded in 1970, JDRF is the leading international nonprofit fighting to cure type 1 diabetes, funding research in more than 20 countries and supporting insulin-aid efforts in the U.S. and around the world. The efforts of the Illinois chapter play a key role in supporting this work; last year’s gala alone raised $16 million. The One Dream Gala, chaired by Alicea and Kayne Grau, features a lively auction and entertainment by the Goo Goo Dolls. And to bring home the reason for this festive gathering, organizers welcome key speakers, including this year’s “Fund a Cure Family,” Brian and Emilee Wolfe of Winnetka and their children Caroline, Sam, Evan, and Alex. “When we agreed to take on a leadership role, we asked our family and friends to stand with us to raise as much money as possible for this important cause,” says Brian. “And they stepped up big time—committing more than $150,000 to fund research in just 30 days.” Although it can occur at any age, type 1 diabetes typically occurs in children and young adults. Symptoms include increased thirst and urination, increased hunger, blurred vision, fatigue, and unexplained weight loss. It sometimes runs in families, so having a parent or sibling with the disease can increase the chance of developing it. Over time, type 1 diabetes can lead to a range of other health issues, including heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, eye problems, and nerve damage. Brian and Emilee’s 13-year-old son, Sam, received a diagnosis when he was 8. “It came as a total shock to us, as we had no fami-
ly history of the disease,” says Emilee. “We were overwhelmed and scared. Sam’s body could no longer regulate his blood sugar, so we had to constantly monitor his glucose levels. This meant pricking his finger every two to three hours, sometimes even more often if his sugars were out of range. Meals became a math challenge—estimating the amount of carbohydrates he was consuming and then plugging that number into a formula to determine how much insulin was needed. And then there were all the other factors that affect blood sugar levels—including exercise, hormones, and stress. The first year was a challenging adjustment and we were thankful to have the support of our family and community to help us persevere through that period.” Steering Sam’s care are Dr. Louis Philipson and Amy Hess-Fischl at University of Chicago’s Kovler Diabetes Center. “Knowing the challenges of dealing with a chronic illness,” notes Brian, “their team focuses on the human aspect of the disease, having therapists available to talk through issues that might arise. We have also been overwhelmed with the support of the local type 1 community. We now have friends—like Megan and Geoff Hoffmann who live nearby and are great leaders in the type 1 community—who we can reach out to for advice and support.” Count JDRF among those that have helped the Wolfe family negotiate young Sam’s unexpected health challenge. “The team has been a huge form of support, meeting with us for coffees, providing helpful resources as we need them, and also informing us on the latest technological and research advances,” shares Emilee. “For people with type 1, the insulin-producing cells in their pancreas have been destroyed by immune assaults. Promising research on transplanting healthy islet cells, along with using drugs to delay the onset of the disease gives us hope that Sam and others with T1D will see a cure in their lifetimes. Brian and I recently celebrated our 20th anniversary and decided that as we plan for the next chapter of life, doing whatever we can to drive toward a cure for Sam, and so many others afflicted with type 1, will be one of the most important things we do together.” For more information, visit jdrf.org.

PUBLISHER’S PROFILE
GENERATIONS OF GEMS Steven Holtzman and Chelsea Holtzman Lawrence carry on the multigenerational, family-owned, and family-run traditions of the fine jewelry retailer CD Peacock.
E
EDITED BY MITCH HURST / PHOTOGRAPHY BY IAN MCLEOD
arly in 1837, Elijah Peacock and his wife, Rebecca Haylock, immigrated to Chicago from the Isle of Chatteris, Cambridgeshire, England. Soon after arriving Peacock opened the House of Peacock on Lake Street, a jewelry store that still stands as the oldest and most enduring retailer in Chicago’s history. Elijah eventually handed control of the company to his son, Charles Daniel, who renamed it C.D. Peacock, and subsequent generations of Peacocks ran the company for well more than a century. The company eventually fell on hard times under new ownership and was slated to shut down in 1993 when jewelry industry veteran Seymour Holtzman took ownership and revived CD Peacock with the same multi-generational, family-owned vision of its founder and original owner. Seymour’s son, Steven Holtzman, a watch industry veteran, joined CD Peacock. In 2022 he assumed the role of Vice Chairman. Steven’s daughter, Chelsea Holtzman Lawrence, joined CD Peacock in 2017 as Vice President of Communications and Marketing. “When my father called and asked me to join the business, my wife and I, along with our youngest daughter, were living in Switzerland,” Steven says. “At the time my eldest daughter, Chelsea, was already working for CD Peacock. As I considered joining the company and relocating, I realized that I was not simply being asked to build a business, but to carry on a legacy, much like the Peacock family had done before ours.” Chelsea Holtzman Lawrence’s husband, Brandon Lawrence, worked with CD Peacock in 2016 when her grandfather, Seymour, brought him in to redesign the company’s online presence and marketing. “I was drawn to the opportunity to learn from my grandfather’s extensive history in the industry and my husband’s ability to bridge that into current technology,” Chelsea says. “I knew it was a special opportunity to have multiple generations of the family working together to elevate the company.” Steven has extensive experience in the watch industry, having been involved in sales, manufacturing, distribution, the creation of his own brand, and collecting high-end timepieces for most of his life. “The world of luxury has always fascinated me, and I find jewelry complements watches perfectly,” he says. “Like watches, I greatly admire the artistry and dedication of jewelry craftsmen, and I appreciate the beauty of a perfectly conceived piece—few things are as elegant as flawless jewelry.” “The first time I experienced a true reverence for quality jewelry was when I was planning my wedding. My engagement ring belonged to my mother-in-law, and it has always felt like I’m carrying a piece of family with me,” Chelsea says. “Jewelry and watches are life milestones that carry memories, which is why I

feel so honored when clients allow us the opportunity to be part of their story.” CD Peacock plans on opening a new flagship Mansion at Oakbrook Center in 2024, which Steven says is a testament to the company’s commitment and perseverance. He says CD Peacock has always been a part of Chicago and plans to continue that tradition. Furthering its commitment to Chicago, Chelsea spearheaded and manages the multi-year partnership as the Official Jeweler of the Chicago Cubs, which includes the naming rights to Wrigley Field’s Premier Entrance and sponsorship of the Cubs’ Player of the Month Award. “It’s both awe inspiring and humbling to be entrusted with the responsibility of preserving CD Peacock. Chelsea and I, along with the rest of the family working in the business, do not take this responsibility lightly,” Steven says. “Overseeing CD Peacock is important to our family, but it is also integral to our multi-generational clients.” “It’s incredible to work with my father and learn from his years in the industry,” says Chelsea. “My father is someone who just genuinely loves timepieces and jewelry, and that kind of passion is contagious.” Visit CD Peacock at cdpeacock.com.

KINVIVE™ by JUVÉDERM® is the first and only hyaluronic acid microdroplet injectable for improving skin smoothness in the cheeks. The modified hyaluronic acid in SKINVIVE™ keeps your skin hydrated, looking healthy, and glowing. You may have seen hyaluronic acid as an ingredient in moisturizing creams or serums. Hyaluronic acid increases your skin’s natural hydrating ability to retain moisture and softness. Hyaluronic acid, a water-attracting molecule found in your skin, naturally decreases with age and sun exposure. SKINVIVE™ by JUVÉDERM® uses microdroplets of hyaluronic acid to help address the texture changes and dullness that can result from the aging process. SKINVIVE™ boosts your skin’s internal hydration to smooth cheeks, reduce fine lines, and give you a lasting glow. Tiny, intradermal microdroplets of hyaluronic acid are injected just below the surface of the skin, so you won’t see any change in the shape or volume of your face, just hydrated, healthier-looking skin no matter your skin type or tone. SKINVIVE™ injectable treatment only takes about 20 minutes and lasts six months with optimal treatment. Patients reported high satisfaction with how glowing, hydrated, refreshed, and healthy their skin looked. COAL MINER’S SON — AND GRANDSON
Ageless Lake Forest resident and Neighborhood Entrepreneurship Lab founder Bob Crawford draws daily inspiration from the legacies of his beloved father and grandfather.
L
WORDS BY BILL MCLEAN / ILLUSTRATION BY ROBERT RISKO
ongtime Lake Forest resident Bob Crawford is downright engaging for a reason. Make that, 17 reasons. That was the number of times he and his family moved before he graduated from Central High School in Philadelphia. Seventeen. “It shaped my personality,” the 85-year-old Crawford says of his peripatetic childhood. Crawford’s personality is a delightfully large one. He oozes positivity, so much so that it often enters a room before he does. The man smiles sincerely and intently as he speaks, and as he listens. Two family members—father Robert Crawford Sr. and grandfather Andrew Creighton Crawford—served as his top two role models and heroes. Both toiled as coal miners. Bob’s grandfather, a Scottish immigrant, later became a volunteer mine rescuer. Robert Sr. later became a giant in the field of urban parks and recreation. “Parks and recreation back then was in its embryonic stage as an industry,” says Crawford, founder and past chairman of Brook Furniture Rental Inc., a company he launched in 1978. “My father’s work focused on providing superior recreation for urban areas, and he emerged as a national leader. I was only 11 when my grandfather died, but he had a tremendous impact on me. He was hard-working and fearless.” Add Robert Crawford Jr. to the pantheon. In 2016, he formed the Neighborhood Entrepreneurship Lab (NEL) with partners Allies for Community Business, Chicago Community Trust, and its funders. NEL believes that entrepreneurs from any background can start and grow businesses that create generational wealth for their families and communities. It supports entrepreneurs in challenged communities on the near-West and South sides of Chicago. “Entrepreneurship is the soul of American business, and capitalism is the single greatest thing in this country,” Crawford says. “I just believe, firmly, that if you give people responsibility, they’ll thrive.”
NEL pairs community business owners with project advisors, project strategists, community partners, and corporate partners who provide intensive support to help execute a growth initiative for each business. The nine-month program pairs each entrepreneur with a mentor. At the end of the fifth month and upon approval of the business plan, a $20,000 grant is given to the entrepreneur to grow their business through a variety of growth strategies like the purchase of capital equipment or a new lease for expansion. Ninety-one of NEL’s 93 graduates are still in business. That’s a .978 batting average, baseball fans. Hundreds of jobs have been created. Crawford’s credo goes something like this: more jobs equal more stable communities. NEL’s first grant went to Imani, a woman who made bean pies in her home. Funds enabled her to secure a contract packer as well as pay for a marketing expert. Old Arthur’s Barbeque Sauce owner Eugene Watts IV worked with advisors to make his product line available on Amazon, contract with a co-packer, and launch a new e-commerce website. Crawford attended Pennsylvania’s Dickinson College where he was a two-way lineman for the football team and then tackled the MBA program at Penn’s Wharton School. A stint in marketing and sales management at Procter & Gamble preceded his 36-and-ahalf-year run at the helm of Brook Furniture Rental, Inc. “Then I tried working in the field of private investment, but I didn’t find it fulfilling,” Crawford recalls. “I wanted to get out there, help others. I toured underserved communities and found out that entrepreneurs in those areas needed an opportunity, a boost.” “I have been extremely excited about this phase of my life, this focus on NEL and nonprofits. I don’t believe in retirement. I never want to leave the excitement of the action in the ‘arena.’ I love being around young business owners and entrepreneurs. This isn’t about me; it’s about America.” For more information about Neighborhood Entrepreneurship Lab, visit a4cb.org/services/neighborhood-entrepreneurship-lab/.
