appy New Year! Our first issue of 2024 celebrates health, wellness, and the North Shore’s premier doctors. Gracing the Health & Wellness issue’s cover is the dynamic duo behind The Warner Aesthetic & Reconstructive Institute— Dr. Jeremy Warner and his wife, Brittany. Moving from doctor offices to test kitchens, our second feature introduces Every Body Eat® founders Trish Thomas and Nichole Wilson. Their mission is to bring people together over a shared love of delicious food, regardless of dietary restrictions and food sensitivities. They believe every body deserves a seat at the table. Exchanging snacks for research, our third feature reveals the work of the Concussion Legacy Foundation and its co-founder Chris Nowinski. We head on a healing journey for our fourth feature where we catch up with Christie Jordan, L.Ac., founding director of Source Healing, a top-tier holistic wellness clinic in Chicago and Winnetka. We round out the features with a compilation of the North Shore’s premier doctors. Swapping medical charts for canvas, Art & Artist spotlights the colorful talent of Bari Wieselman Schulman. In Trending, we visit Glencoe yogi Laura Merlo, owner of Reach Yoga and co-owner of Merlo’s Italian Restaurant. Recipe whips up a decadent dish perfect for cold winter nights and First Class takes us to the 7th continent with a tour of Antarctica aboard the Silversea’s new Silver Endeavour.

Our issue ends with Parting Words from Wilmette’s Mar Soraparu, co-founder of BIÂN—a stunning private social and wellness club in Chicago. Wishing you all a healthy 2024.

Fresh Picks provides customers with an alternative experience of grocery shopping, one that allows them to know where their food is from and what went into its production. This level of transparency is made possible by sourcing directly from Midwestern farmers and producers. Eating local means produce is picked at its peak, delivering a delicious flavor that’s packed with vitamins and minerals. Snacks and other pantry items have short ingredient lists with high nutritional value, while meat and dairy products from humane and transparent farmers deliver healthier products. More than 95 percent of Illinois farms are family-owned, and North Shore residents can support multiple farmers at the same time by shopping at Fresh Picks. Delivery and pick-up are available every Sunday through Friday. For more information, visit freshpicks.com.

With the recent devastating wildfires, visitors are encouraged to return to Maui and experience the beauty and healing of the island. Wailea is home to many of Maui’s largest employers including the Fairmont Kea Lani, the island’s only all-suite and villa resort. The Fairmont Kea Lani’s multi-year project, known as the Ho’omaka Hou (A New Beginning) Transformation, completely remodeled the hotel, including all 450 rooms, its bars and restaurants, a cultural center, and the main lobby. Carried out in consultation with local cultural leaders, the renovation celebrates Hawaii’s history and culture. The Native Hawaiian cultural center and culinary-focused cocktail bar and restaurant are designed to evoke the stories of Palauea, the traditional land district where the hotel stands, and Maui’s rich culture. Visit soon to connect with the culture and the community of this beautiful Hawaiian island. Aloha! For more information, visit fairmont.com.

JENNY MUSLIN grew up in Wilmette and now lives in Highland Park with her husband, Jason, and their two children. An experienced, lifelong dancer, Muslin started to teach dance cardio and sculpt classes via Zoom during COVID. The overwhelmingly positive feedback inspired her to start Dance Sculpt. Muslin offers two kinds of classes— Dance Cardio, where attendees learn routines to different high-energy pop songs, and Sculpt for those who want to lengthen and tone without the dance element. Weekly adult sessions are available at Bright Bowls’ Highland Park studio. Muslin also teaches kids’ classes with popular themes like Barbie, Taylor Swift, and TikTok. Movement benefits mental health and mobility so introducing it at a young age helps foster a sense of empowerment, proving a feel-good workout has no age limit. Muslin steps away from the studio to share her city and shore favorites with Sheridan Road. CHOOSE WISELY Strategic Divorce attorney Michone J. Riewer shares tips for finding the right divorce attorney to represent you and your family.

n the same way that no one wants to have an illness, no one wants to get divorced. But like finding the right doctor, finding the right divorce attorney is critical to a successful outcome. To get the right fit, there are many things to consider. Do you want a firm or do you want a person who works alone? Do you want someone who specializes in issues involving children? Do you want someone who’s familiar with small businesses? Do you want someone who understands executive compensation and restricted stock units? Do you want someone who is familiar with each of the judges in the county and can advise you regarding what to expect? Do you want someone who’s able to listen and can help you create a strategy for your family? Do you want someone who can quickly review and understand financial information? Do you want someone who understands retirement assets? Do you want someone who patiently answers your questions? Do you want someone who can write and effectively communicate? Do you want someone who is going to be a fierce and effective advocate in court? Do you want someone who can sit down at a conference table, find a creative solution, and bring people to the middle? In my experience, every one of these qualities is important and in fact, you deserve to have nothing less than an attorney who has it all. One of the common misconceptions is that if you want your divorce to be amicable, you should choose an attorney who does not specialize in trial or litigation. As a result, because you don’t want to go to trial and you don’t want to be involved in litigation, you choose someone with no trial experience. This could end up putting you at a disadvantage. I have found that having an attorney who has the strength and experience to go to trial, when needed, is actually a deterrent to both litigation and trials. Strength changes everything. It’s much more effective to walk into a room to negotiate a settlement and create an amicable resolution if your attorney has the strength and experience to go to trial. You are much less likely to be bullied into a settlement that does not make sense. Similarly, if you’re focused on child and custody issues, you may choose an attorney who only specializes in those issues and is not as experienced in the financial and property area of divorce. However, once the child issues are resolved, you’ll quickly learn that you need an attorney who has the knowledge and expertise in the financial area to make sure that you and your children are financially set up for success. Both areas are important to the successful resolution of your divorce.
Michone J. Riewer
Again, just like when you find a new doctor, when choosing your divorce attorney, interview more than one. Ask questions, not only about the one issue that is most important to you but about each of the areas of divorce. Ask them about their strategy and notice whether they have listened to and responded to your questions and concerns. Find someone who will be pleasant to deal with, and who you feel is worthy of your trust. The divorce process is much easier when you choose the right divorce attorney to guide you through the process. Michone J. Riewer is an attorney with Strategic Divorce in Lake Bluff, 847-234-4445, strategicdivorce.com.

or artist Bari Wieselman Schulman, Ph.D., of rethinkreframe in Deerfield, color is lingua franca: a beautiful bridge language linking humans of every tongue. Speaking with bold colorful strokes, layers, and textures, Schulman’s paintings communicate creative freedom and boundless energy. “So much is expressed and felt through color,” says Wieselman Schulman. “It is a powerful, meaningful, and transformative medium that is broadly accessible and deeply evocative.” “I love the moment when people see my work in person for the first time,” she adds. “There is this palpable shockwave that happens, and my hope is that the viewer is swept away on waves of color and light.” With degrees from the University of Rochester in psychology and Spanish, plus a doctorate in developmental psychology with a focus on psycholinguistics and time living abroad in Madrid,

Salamanca, and Antwerp, it’s not a surprise that language plays a hugely influential role in Wieselman Schulman’s world. “I am always thinking about language and words,” she says. “They fascinate me in every way—their forms, meanings, and sounds; their etymology and heritage; their links to culture, linguistic histories, and family trees.” The interwoven connectedness, power, rhythm, and stories delivered through language and individual word forms make this arena one of passion and play for Wieselman Schulman. Paintings in three recent series, speech + gesture, dialogue, and dialogue 2, used only one or two colors, so the emphasis in these works is on the meaning the viewer derives from the marks and form. “They are very intuitive, gestural, and movement-centered,” says Wieselman Schulman. “I used color, form, and contrast to ask, to answer, to engage, to evoke, to provoke, and to draw deep. The discourse with each piece is a unique journey for each viewer to co-create and experience.” For Wieselman Schulman, who has been a knowledge-seeker and “deep and different thinker” her whole life, exploration and experimentation are vital in both her work and her approach to life with her husband, James, and their two children. Growing up in Highland Park as the eldest of three with a seven-year gap between siblings, contributed to Wieselman Schulman’s independence, curiosity, and intensity. “I have always liked to puzzle over, poke at, play with, ponder, and peek around every corner,” she reflects. While many of Schulman’s paintings are on canvas, she also
más, dialogue 2 series, 2023; 11” x 15” acrylic on paper
works on wood, paper, textiles, and repurposed materials. Choosing the surface is very much about what feels right to her on an intuitive level at that moment. “Choice of surface essentially emerges in tandem with the work I’m visualizing and the media I plan to use,” she explains. “I gravitate toward thick, slightly toothy watercolor paper, and then at times to raw canvas and cloth/textile. These materials feel good under my hands, energize me, and I like the ways in which my favorite media and tools behave on these surfaces,” she reveals. Wieselman Schulman also experiments with a wide range of tools beyond brushes and palette knives. In the all is color series, she used pieces of wood in various sizes to move the paint around and applied differing pressures as she painted on canvas and paper. For her state of series—full of bold forms with a lot of color mixtures and movement—Wieselman Schulman spent a lot of time working with the viscosity of the paint to get a very fluid consistency. “Some of my work builds over time: you paint, you leave, you come back and paint again,” she observes. “But for this work, a lot of the building was in my head, then quickly using the brush or scraper in very rapid and assertive movements with a lot of splashing and throwing to get the right energy, movement, and dynamism.” As seen in her latest paintings, where are all the peonies? and alice into the woods, Wieselman Schulman is currently experimenting with new color juxtapositions and intermingling. These paintings feature a lot of active, smaller movements and represent a fresh space for her.

To connect with her collectors and the public, Wieselman Schulman posts daily on Instagram and maintains a vibrant website. She works with private collectors and designers, participates in gallery shows and artist pop-ups, and collaborates with a wide range of creatives. The path that led Wieselman Schulman from language and psychology to full-time art included a career in human-centered research and design and running a research team for a digital firm. Her decision to embrace full-time work as an artist with the establishment of her studio was anchored in self-realization. “Being a creative person to my core meant that that creativity would be expressed in many, many ways—all connected to exploration,” she says. “For a long time, I thought having a divergent mind meant I was fragmented. But over time, I shifted my perspective to seeing the ‘who’ and ‘how’ I am as strengths, not vulnerabilities. Formalizing my practice and creating my studio helped me get there; rethinkreframe is both a physical and emotional space from which I can share my work with the world. I love it, and it’s the perfect place to be.” scotch + ribbon, 2023; 36” x 36” x 1.5” acrylic on canvas

How do you find true happiness at age 50? For LAURA MERLO, owner of Reach Yoga and co-owner of Merlo’s Italian Restaurant, happiness is creating a life you don’t need a vacation from. Growing up in New York and moving to Chicago in 1992, Merlo settled in Glencoe 13 years ago with her husband, John, and two young kids. When the town’s beloved yoga studio went on the market five years ago, Merlo embraced the opportunity and has never looked back. Juggling life as an owner of two thriving businesses while managing the well-being of two teenagers has its challenges, but somehow her work and personal lives flow seamlessly. Merlo notes this wouldn’t be possible without the help and encouragement of an incredibly strong staff and supportive community. This restaurateur and yogi steps away from menus and mats to share how she stays on trend in a busy world.
ON HER MOBILE “I wish I could say that I’m not attached to my phone, but I am. Without it, I’m not sure how I would function because I use the calendar to remind myself about EVERYTHING! I use MapMyRun for my daily pre-dawn jogs, the Starbucks app for my daily Venti Green Tea order, Hyperlapse for creating videos to post my teaching schedule on Instagram and Facebook, the Sling app for creating and updating Merlo’s hostess schedule, OpenTable for making and checking reservations on the fly, Mindbody for observing Reach’s daily retail sales and class enrollments when I am not on site, the Hometown Coffee & Juice and True Juice apps for pre-ordering my daily lunch fixes, and Shazam for when I hear a song I must grab for a future yoga playlist! If someone took my phone away, I would most likely be way more present than I claim to be.”
Laura Merlo wearing AMO Army pant and Maiami sweater vest, LuxLab Glencoe
IN HER EARBUDS “I listen to How I Built This with Guy Raz for business inspiration, and SmartLess, Literally! with Rob Lowe, Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, and Just B with Bethenny Frankel podcasts as background noise for the moving meditation that is my daily run. I love that Spotify sends me new music weekly that I use to create playlists for my classes. Depending on my mood, you might hear soundtracks from ‘80s movies like Fast Times at Ridgemont High or About Last Night to dance mashups from all the years I spent bartending and dancing at nightclubs in my 20s to any cover I can find. I love familiar, but different.” For more information, visit reachyogaglencoe.com and merlosglencoe.com.

ON HER NIGHTSTAND “I always have a notebook and pen to jot down ideas and inspiration that come to me in my sleep as well as class sequencing, and other things I must remember to do. Everything always seems more important and exciting at 3 a.m.”

STUFFED CABBAGE ROLLS WITH GROUND TURKEY & RICE WORDS, PHOTOGRAPHY, AND FOOD STYLING BY MONICA KASS ROGERS
A
desire for hearty but healthy, chilly weather dishes has me celebrating casseroles and bakes. Using ground turkey instead of beef in these satisfying roll-ups is a healthy choice, while the use of a few canned ingredients (crushed tomato and diced green chilies) along with leftover cooked rice speeds up the prep. The filling is delicious—so good, you may be tempted to spoon it up on its own. But once the dish is finished in all its tomatoey glory, you’ll be glad you went through with the cabbage leaf tuck-roll-and-bake. So good.

R E CI PE Serves 8 to 10 INGREDIENTS For cabbage casing • 1 large head of fresh cabbage, leaves pulled off, washed, and separated For filling • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 onion, peeled and diced • 1/2 cup chopped portobello or white button mushrooms • 1/2 red bell pepper, cored, and diced • 6 cloves garlic, minced • 1 pound ground turkey • 3 slices uncured bacon, diced fine • 2 cups cooked short-grain white rice • 1 4-ounce can diced green chilies • 1/2 cup minced fresh parsley • 1 teaspoon salt • 5 or 6 grinds fresh cracked pepper For tomato sauce • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes • 1/4 cup tomato paste • 1 tablespoon crushed dried oregano leaves • 1 tablespoon crushed dried thyme leaves • 1/2 teaspoon chili flakes • Salt and pepper to taste For garnish • 1/4 cup minced parsley METHOD Prep cabbage leaves Heat 2 inches of water to boiling in a large pot. Place steamer basket into pot and add washed cabbage leaves. Cover and steam until leaves are bright green and pliable. Remove from stove top; rinse leaves with cool water. Set aside while you make filling. Make filling Place olive oil and onion in a skillet over medium-low heat. Cook until partially softened. Add mushroom, diced bell pepper, and garlic and continue cooking until soft. Add ground turkey and diced bacon, breaking up turkey with back of a spoon into small pieces. Continue cooking until no longer pink. Scoop mixture into a large bowl. Add cooked short-grain rice, diced green chilies, and parsley. Mix well. Set aside. Prep tomato sauce In a medium-sized bowl whisk tomato paste with olive oil, stir in crushed tomatoes. Stir in herbs and chili flakes. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Make cabbage rolls Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spoon a generous portion of tomato sauce into the bottom of an ovensafe casserole dish. On a clean
work surface, place one cabbage leaf with bottom edge toward you. Spoon a generous portion of filling into the bottom edge of leaf. Lift bottom of leaf up over the filling, tucking and folding the sides of the leaf toward the middle. Roll up. Pin bottom flap of leaf shut with a toothpick if desired. Place cabbage roll over tomato sauce in casserole dish. Repeat with remaining cabbage leaves and filling. Spoon the rest of the tomato sauce over the top of the cabbage rolls. Cover casserole dish with foil. Place in oven and bake for 40 minutes until cabbage rolls are tender and tomato sauce is bubbling. To serve Spoon some tomato sauce onto each plate. Top with cabbage rolls (be sure to remove toothpicks if you used them). Sprinkle with minced parsley. Serve hot.

or many travelers, an adventure to the White Continent is truly a bucket list item. For those wishing to experience it in the lap of luxury while not sacrificing either the spirit or the letter of true adventure, it’s now possible aboard Silversea Cruises’ ultra-luxury ship, Silver Endeavour. The arrival of Silver Endeavour, a PC6 Polar Class ship, to Silversea’s fleet is a particularly great experience for those with limited time. Most vessels that navigate to Antarctica do so with round-trip sailing across the notorious Drake Passage from Ushuaia, Argentina, the southernmost tip of South America. This 36-hour crossing can be smooth (the “Drake Lake”) or rough (the “Drake Shake”). Having experienced both the Drake Lake and

the Drake Shake, I can assure you avoiding the Drake Passage is a major bonus. Not only does it save precious time, thus permitting more Antarctic adventures, but it also is especially attractive for those prone to seasickness. Sipping champagne and eating caviar onboard a gorgeous vessel is vastly preferable to downing motion sickness medication or donning a dastardly, dry mouth-inducing, anti-seasickness patch. The Silver Endeavour instead uses the Antarctica Bridge, so guests fly first to Punta Arenas, Chile. Guests then board a private chartered plane, some of which are adorably painted to resemble penguins. With only 64 passengers on an aircraft built for 100, guests comfortably fly to a small airstrip on King George Island in the South Shetland Islands, then board a Zodiac to embark directly onto the Silver Endeavour.

The only downside of my butler: he was unable to return home with me and frankly, I may never recover from his absence. FOOD FANATICS WILL FIND HAPPINESS Like all Silversea ships, the Silver Endeavour has a wide variety of dining options. The Restaurant is the ship’s main, open-seating dining room and serves continental cuisine. Surrounded by windows, the dramatic views add to the culinary experience. Il Terrazzino pays homage to Silversea’s Italian heritage; its delectable fresh dishes such as caprese salad, pappardelle all’anatra, and tiramisu will have you dreaming of Italy. Silversea’s signature La Dame serves the finest French cuisine at sea in a supremely elegant atmosphere. There’s an a la carte menu and a six-course, wine-paired degustation menu served by white-gloved waiters. Enjoying Champagne and fresh caviar with all requisite accouterments, foie gras terrine, tender Limousin beef, and pistachio soufflé while watching icebergs the size of big rigs float by is an experience not soon forgotten. Arts Café, which resembles my favorite Starbucks but is far better, serves light breakfasts, lunches, and snacks, along with excellent coffees, fresh pastries, and muffins along with house-made gourmet ice cream. There’s also 24-hour room service delivered by your butler within 20 minutes. FITNESS, OTIUM SPA & SALON For those guests who use it, the state-of-the-art fitness center with floor-to-ceiling windows renders the gourmet onboard dining guilt-free. In addition to Technogym equipment and weights, there are daily yoga, stretch, Pilates, and abdominal classes. The Roman-inspired Otium Spa offers not-to-be-missed experiences including the decadent 100-minute “Apollonian Spirit” treatment using warm mineral-rich salt stones followed by a cold mask. The “Heavenly Journey” deep-tissue massage with Mediterranean oils nearly made me forget my name. The full-service hair and nail salon for men and women includes an Emperor’s Chair where men can channel their inner explorer while being groomed to perfection.

AN UNFORGETTABLE JOURNEY A trip to Antarctica is utterly transformative. Unlike many other destinations, Antarctica’s nature, wildlife, grandeur, scale, and breathtaking vistas remain with you long after returning home. For all travelers to Antarctica, it’s key to remember three things. First, she is a land of striking superlatives. ake it work.” That’s what you do. Whether it’s whipping up dinner from a near-empty larder, or making do with what you’ve got in your carry-on when the airline loses your luggage, improving and repurposing are a part of life. And when our homes are no longer quite the right fit, we do what we can to make ourselves more comfortable. Just ask Karen and Adam Firsel. “Our son and daughter were sharing a small bathroom, and at one point, Adam was working from our open dining room,” relates Karen, an on-camera television personality whose work includes lifestyle segments for Chicago’s WGN-TV. “We updated every square inch of our house but had definitely outgrown it.” COVID made their home’s shortcomings even more apparent. “Living through something like that, you realize what works and

what doesn’t,” observes Karen. “The experience inspired us to create a wish list for a forever home, a generational home, one where our kids could grow up and want to come back to.” Longtime Northbrook residents, the couple had always had their sights set on The Highlands, the long-established village neighborhood located in School District 28 and within walking distance of downtown. Home lots aren’t large, and zoning caps the build footprint at 40 percent of a site. “But after a six-month

search,” relates Adam, “we were incredibly fortunate to find a double, overgrown lot with a small, older house on it. We jumped on it and then went to three different architects to see who could help us realize our vision.” Determined to achieve their dream home, they didn’t hold back, presenting a wish list that included a light-filled upper-level gym, a three-season room, an outdoor kitchen, and two offices. “We figured we’d have to narrow down our list of wants, but Brad Lewis of Schwarz Lewis Design Group in Oak Brook blew us away with a design that accommodated all our requests.” Having done extensive renovations on their previous home— plus the fact that as a real estate developer, Adam was conversant with building issues—the couple were well-positioned to negotiate the myriad challenges of home construction. “Karen and I are very complementary,” says Adam, “I am very good with functionality, and she’s amazing at design and finishes. We are both very decisive people, and I think that’s one thing you have to be when building a custom home. There’s no time to overthink things. You have to make decisions.” And living around the corner, they were able to visit the project regularly. “I passed the site every day going to and from work, and I just loved seeing this house come out of the ground,” says Adam. Firsels’ 6,000-square-foot residence combines a timeless, traditional spaciousness with cocooning details, such as lots of built-in cabinetry and handsome fireplaces. Beautifully fenestrated with overscale windows, the home is awash in natural light from the main staircase to the roomy primary bath. Geared for entertaining, the main floor features an expansive, open-plan kitchen/ dining/living space. The lower level sports a professional pool table, a restaurant-worthy bar area, and a golf simulator. And with five bedrooms—all en suite—there’s more than enough room for family and guests. “I love every room—my office, the kitchen, the TV room,” enthuses Adam. “We put so much thought into every space.” For Karen, the great joy of their new home is that it allows them to really celebrate life. “That is the best part for me. There’s nothing better than when people are over during March Madness, for a golf tournament, or to celebrate the holidays. This house is really a gift for everybody. M
arriage is a partnership. But partnership takes on a whole new meaning when a couple works together. The “Have a good day” and “Honey, I’m home” phrases that bookend most spouses’ days don’t come into play when a husband and wife are running a business together. Not every duo can survive without a little bit of daily distance. But Jeremy and Brittany Warner wouldn’t have it any other way. Jeremy, a plastic surgeon board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and Brittany, an MBA with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, operate The Warner Aesthetic & Reconstructive Institute in Northfield, which offers a range of surgical and nonsurgical procedures, including the patented SWIFT™ Lift, an innovative technique of Dr. Warner’s invention that allows patients to comfortably and safely achieve their facial rejuvenation goals in an office setting. The procedure uses local rather than general anesthetic and produces a natural look that requires minimal recovery time. Born in Utah, Dr. Warner studied at the George Washington University School of Medicine, completed his residency at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and undertook an additional year of training in facial aesthetic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Toronto. “Within the world of surgery, plastic surgeons have to be ready to operate from head to toe working to restore deformities resulting from birth, trauma, or cancer, as well as change lives through aesthetic surgery,” notes Dr. Warner. “Helping patients live better lives through surgery and medicine has been a fulfilling journey, from repairing injured facial nerves and allowing a paralyzed face to smile again to complex revision rhinoplasty surgery to microvascular surgery to transplant tissue from a leg to a scalp, and everything in between.”
Brittany, an Ohio native, began her career in the health industry as an administrator at an otolaryngology practice in Park Ridge while earning her undergraduate degree. She then went on to work for a large hospital system in Chicago’s north suburbs, while earning an MBA at the same time from the University of Illinois. Following graduation, she took a position with the University of Chicago Medical Center in facility operations, using her expertise to lead the organization of a large outpatient medical center. “I truly believe every professional role I’ve held, every collaborative relationship I’ve built, has been integrated into our surgical institute,” says Brittany, who has guided the institute’s financial and operational planning and laid the blueprint for the patient experience. “From the second a patient calls our office, to three years out from surgery—and every touch point in between—we’re strategically determined to provide the most effective, safe, and personalized care.” In addition to their North Shore practice, the Warners are committed to a philanthropic endeavor that takes them across the globe. As Mission Director of the Nepal Surgical and Medical Mission under the Face the Future Foundation, Dr. Warner travels to Kathmandu every year to treat severely injured patients and patients born with facial deformities. “While my practice in the U.S. is a mix of cosmetic and reconstructive work, going to Nepal is just simply jam-packed with complex reconstructive procedures that help solve problems for patients who would otherwise not have access to this type of care.” In 2019, Brittany traveled to Nepal with her husband to help with organization and logistics and while there, she decided to begin a new chapter in her career. When she returned home, she completed her nursing degree and is now positioned to provide care both at the institute and in Nepal. If respect is key to a successful partnership, Dr. Warner demonstrated that early on when he proposed to Brittany after she had bested him in an IRONMAN Triathlon by two hours. And

“I think the biggest challenge for us is learning to take a moment and embrace what we both have worked so hard to achieve.” - BRITTANY WARNER
Brittany—who is set to open The Skin Lounge, offering an elite level of aesthetic facial and body services—deeply admires Jeremy’s commitment to his patients and the institute. “During executive meetings, I often use a quote by Teddy Roosevelt that I feel truly defines Jeremy, ‘Courage is not having the strength to go on; it is going on when you don’t have the strength,’” explains Brittany. Parents to three active boys, the Warners enjoy skiing and boating, as well as “date night Wednesday” at Merlo’s in Glencoe or EJ’s Place in Skokie. But their vocations are never far from their thoughts. “While we do have rules that work should ideally be discussed during work hours and scheduled meetings, there is a lot of discussion mixed throughout our time at home as well. It just works for us and has helped us propel the business. But I think the biggest challenge for us is learning to take a moment and embrace what we both have worked so hard to achieve,” shares Brittany. “I often find myself feeling guilty if I’m not working toward my next achievement. That’s just how I am built. Thankfully, my husband is exactly the same way.” For more information about the The Warner Aesthetic & Reconstructive Institute, visit warnerplasticsurgery.com.

he gorgeously styled photos of Trish Thomas and Nichole Wilson shown on these pages weren’t quite what these two North Shore entrepreneurs had in mind. “We asked if we could have our pictures taken in our usual work attire—lab coats and hair nets,” jokes Thomas. Down-to-earth, reluctant to stand in the spotlight, and deeply committed to helping others, Thomas and Wilson launched Every Body Eat® to create a world where everybody feels welcome at the table, regardless of dietary restrictions or preferences. With their line of snack thins, crispbread, crackers, and cookies, they target the 64 percent of U.S. families who have special diets and 100 percent of the people who just really like tasty food. “The reason customized eating is so hard on people with special diets is that it comes with social and emotional isolation,” Thomas says. They often miss out on the classic bonding that happens at social occasions when food is shared because they’re faced with a few undesirable options: not eating, bringing their own food, eating and getting sick, or telling the host of their needs and feeling like a burden. Thomas and Wilson both know this feeling firsthand. For Wilson, it started when her daughter came home from preschool one day, doubled over in pain. “I thought her appendix had burst,” Wilson recalls. The third pediatric gastrointestinal specialist they consulted finally determined the culprit: a dairy allergy. “The dairy had been impacting her for so long that it took a year to undo,” Wilson says. Eventually, Wilson, her husband, and their younger child were also all diagnosed with food sensitivities. Thomas’ food issues stem from an autoimmune disorder that hit her hard soon after she had children. “I was super sick, felt terrible, had no energy, looked terrible, and was put on medication after medication,” she says. “I thought, there has to be a better
way.” That’s when she discovered an integrated medical doctor, Evanston’s Dr. Geeta Maker-Clark, who searched for the root of Thomas’ problems—and it all pointed to food. “I learned that my sensitivities were gluten, dairy, soy, corn, and egg, and if I took those things out of my diet, all my internal inflammation went away.” That was about 8 years ago and, since then, Thomas has rarely needed any medication. When the two women met at a North Shore Country Day School book fair, they initially connected over their shared passion for helping entrepreneurs. They also realized that combining their entrepreneurial spirit and unique backgrounds could lead to something much bigger. Thomas, a mom to a blended family of six boys, teaches Principles of Entrepreneurship at Northwestern University’s Farley Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation and is a self-described serial entrepreneur—as a teenager she built a thriving babysitting business that employed several of her peers. Later, she built and sold a toy company, as well as the first safe online community for kids, and a children’s media company with distribution in more than 100 countries. Wilson, a Stanford-educated former Wall Street dynamo, spent time handling mergers and acquisitions for Merrill Lynch and FritoLay, in addition to

running a $33 billion R&D portfolio at PepsiCo, but she always knew she wanted to run her own company. Their combined credentials forged a perfect yin and yang. “I’m the kite. She’s got the string,” Thomas says of their partnership and close friendship. They soon started cooking up their business idea for good-tasting food that was free from most inflammatory ingredients (common food allergens and corn). Less than two weeks after launching their initial product, the pandemic shutdown forced operations into Thomas’ house for nearly a year and derailed plans to distribute their snacks on college campuses—they’ll get there soon. They persisted, knocking on doors of grocery stores everywhere. They quickly landed on local shelves such as Foodstuff ’s, Sunset Foods, Mariano’s, Winnetka’s Grand Food Center, and then nationally at Sprouts Farmers Market and Whole Foods Market. Despite many naysayers in the snack food industry, they won Whole Foods 2021 Midwest Supplier of the Year. They currently market a handful of flavors of Every Body Eat® crispy thin crackers with names like Cheese-Less™ and Fiery Chile Lime™ and crispbread cracker options like White Pepper & Garlic™. Grain-free crispbread crackers and cookie bites are coming soon. Their secret recipe? Instead of reverse-engineering “regular” products, they took a different approach. “There’s a beautiful universe of ingredients that are free of the top food allergens and corn and, from that, we build up,” Wilson explains. “We wanted to create delicious and interesting flavor profiles that are so good, you don’t even ask what’s missing.” They also wanted their free-from foods to taste good for everyone, so people who have special diets didn’t feel singled out. “Our barometer is how to make food that tastes so good that people want to eat it with or without a special diet,” Wilson says. Sales numbers prove the two women have created a recipe for success. “The demand just from our existing customers has been coming in at about three times what we can make for the whole year,” Thomas says. They’re already expanding production. Just as important as the products they make are the people who
make them. “Our mission is to give everybody a seat at the table, and we do it literally with our food, and we do it figuratively with our team,” Wilson explains. When they started to gather their team, they wanted to “leverage our privilege in service to our team,” Wilson says, noting that most of their employees hail from the south and west sides of Chicago. About 65 percent of them have been involved in the criminal justice system or formally incarcerated, others chronically underemployed, 20 percent had been homeless, and nearly all had experienced food and housing insecurity. During interviews, Thomas and Wilson looked for passion, a positive problem-solving attitude, and a growth mindset, no matter their resume. “I’ve worked with titans of industry, and this team is by far the team I would go into the trenches with every single day again and again,” says Wilson, who also helps employees build a stable future by teaching them money management skills. “People talk about how delicious our food is, and that’s because our food truly is made with love and it’s made with intention and with purpose, and that’s 100 percent due to our team,” Wilson says. “Our team is the company. We just have the good fortune to sell what they make,” Thomas agrees. Our practical, hair-net-wearing women wanted readers to learn two more things from their experiences: One, that if you’re not feeling well, look at food as a possible source. And two, if you have a business idea that solves a problem, find other people who are committed with you. “Entrepreneurship is like sprinting a marathon,” Wilson says. “You’ve got to have folks cheering you on, and you can’t be afraid to stumble in front of them. They’re your springboard and your safety net.” Thomas and Wilson are in it to win the ultimate marathon— making it easier for everybody to share delicious food with the people they love. Thomas observes, “The ironic thing about all the effort we are putting into creating products people can share is that the one thing we hear from customers again and again is, ‘I can’t believe I ate the whole bag.’” For more information, visit everybodyeating.com.

HEAD IN THE GAME Since being sidelined by concussions, former wrestling star and college football player Chris Nowinski has dedicated his career to making sports safer. WORDS BY JOE ROSENTHAL PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE CONCUSSION LEGACY FOUNDATION
C
hris Nowinski isn’t a person who scares easily. He was a standout football player at John Hersey High School in Arlington Heights and took his gridiron skills to college, where he played defensive tackle for Harvard and won All-Ivy honors. As Chris Harvard in the WWE, he didn’t bat an eye before jumping into the wrestling ring, flying off ropes, and dodging (most of the time) chairs being swung at him. But these days Nowinski finds himself preoccupied by worries that jar him as much as the hits he took over so many years. He’s afraid about how often our kids are getting hit in the head while playing the sports that had meant so much to him in his youth. He fears what will happen to these kids, their families, and their friends if we don’t accelerate research efforts and change how we play sports. After being sidelined from his WWE career by a serious concussion in 2003, Nowinski became an advocate for concussion awareness and prevention. He earned his doctorate in behavioral neuroscience and co-founded the Concussion Legacy Foundation with Dr. Robert Cantu to promote safer sports and safer athletes and an end to chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative brain disease linked to repeated head impacts (CTE). The nonprofit organization collaborates with the Boston University CTE Center in research, and together with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs they founded the VA-BU-CLF Brain Bank, the preeminent CTE resource in the world. Sheridan Road caught up with Nowinski late last fall, just days before the publication of a report documenting the first case of a teenage football player diagnosed with advanced CTE. The 18-year-old from Missouri, who began playing tackle football in third grade, exhibited stage 2 of CTE’s four stages. Before he died by suicide, the young player asked his family to donate his brain to research, and he spoke openly about the concussions he’d suffered in football and how bad they made him feel. Although research didn’t positively correlate the symptoms that led to his death with CTE, research is clear that football can cause CTE. “We need to recognize that children’s brains are fragile and that there are only so many hits they can take before the risk of a life-altering concussion or developing CTE comes into play,” says Nowinski. He points out that we’re living in an era quite differ-
Chris Nowinski playing football for Harvard
ent from the one he experienced 30-plus years ago. Kids are now playing longer seasons, more games, more tournaments, and playing contact sports almost year-round. It is, in some ways, an ongoing experiment simply because this level of play hasn’t happened before. Nowinski points to the largest CTE study ever, which included over 600 football players. It showed that more than 75 percent of those who played 10 or more years of football had CTE. While the researchers don’t suggest this accurately reflects risk for everyone who played 10 or more years since families donate the brains of loved ones who had neurological symptoms, Nowinski says it is concerning how frequently CTE is diagnosed in this population. “There’s no excuse in 2024 for kids to be exposed to sports where they get hit in the head hundreds of times a year now that it’s proven that it causes CTE in some of them,” he says.

A Complicated Problem, But Some of the Answers Are Simple Of course, sports are popular because we love them—we love playing them, watching them, and it’s fun to see our kids play the sports we loved to play when we were young. It’s a complex issue but according to Nowinski, there is an easy precaution. “The simple advice is don’t let your kid get hit in the head repetitively until they’re at least 14.” The reasons for the age delay, Nowinski explains, are threefold: “First, the science is extremely clear on cumulative exposure. So, starting later is minimizing the number of years. Number two is brain development. Your brain is going through magical changes when you convert from a child to an adolescent, and head trauma could negatively impact that maturation process. And the third reason is informed consent and your ability to train a child to do
anything safely. We know from every aspect of public health that the primary way to prevent a child from getting hurt can’t be asking the child to follow rules, especially as complicated as ramming a moving person or [heading a] moving ball.” Nowinski speaks positively about how USA Hockey raised the age for body checking and how USA Lacrosse partners with his organization’s Team Up Against Concussions program, which uses a bystander intervention model to deliver a straightforward message to the team: a teammate with a concussion needs your help and should receive immediate medical attention. “[As a teammate], you may be the only one who sees it,” Nowinski says. “You may be the only one they confess to.” So, the system is put in place for players to help each other from the very start of the season, along with a “team captain” to lead the initiative. It’s about creating the environment for change.

Even with these changes, Nowinski emphasizes that there is still room for improved safety measures. For example, in 2015 his organization successfully advocated to raise the age to head the ball in soccer. To Nowinski’s disappointment, the age was only raised to 11. “There’s just no reason to start at 11,” he argues. He’s a big advocate of kids only playing flag football before high school. “Flag before 14 is the future,” he says. “You get all the benefits. You just don’t get the mileage on your brain and the mileage on your body.” Nowinski explains the rationale that supports his viewpoint: “If you don’t play football until 14, and 93 percent of football players will never play after 18, we should be able to make CTE rare in people who play four years of football.” While there is no known cure for CTE, treatment is available for many symptoms of the disease. The Concussion Legacy Foundation HelpLine is available to provide personalized support for any current or former athletes who are concerned about repetitive head trauma and are looking for help. “[We can provide] medical referrals, support groups, one-onone support, and education on what they’re going through so that they know that there are thousands of people who’ve been in that situation who’ve gotten better.” The benefits of youth sports have been well documented for years. Yet, there’s new documentation for the risks as well. Nowinski’s life goal is to keep the scales squarely tilted in favor of the benefits. A
holistic approach to health is all that Christie Jordan has ever known. “I was born in Seoul, Korea, and my mother raised us very naturally,” Jordan says. “She followed old-school Korean culture by treating anything that was troubling us with a natural approach. Even our food sources were very important to her.” But it wasn’t until Jordan witnessed her father take control of his health by incorporating Eastern methods that she understood the true power of these Eastern practices. “My father became an acupuncturist toward the end of his life after he had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer,” she recalls. “I saw him do some miraculous things with holistic medicine and fasting. His body responded beautifully to it. He wanted more than the three months doctors told him he had to live. Using both Western and Eastern medicine, he got himself seven more years. It was such a natural calling for me to follow in my father’s footsteps.” After receiving her master’s degree in Oriental Medicine in 1999, Jordan—a licensed and national board-certified acupuncturist and herbalist—founded Source Healing, a holistic wellness clinic with offices in Chicago and Winnetka. Source Healing specializes in treating anything pain and stress-related, along with women’s health and fertility, and chronic digestive and immune system imbalances. Source Healing’s primary services include acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, naturopathic medicine, Asian bodywork, therapeutic massage, and grounded energetic guidance. All of Source Healing’s Eastern medicine practitioners are licensed by the state of Illinois, are national board-certified in acupuncture and herbal medicine, and have years of clinical experience. “In watching my father go through his health issues, my biggest takeaway is that we don’t have to wait until things are really bad for us to understand that symptoms are our body’s way of talking to us. When people come to see me with something chronic, something serious—it takes them a number of treatments to get where they need to be. But if you get a monthly tune-up when you’re healthy, it’s much easier to maintain that state of balance in the body. Our patients often move more into a state of prevention after they see results.” Source Healing values open communication and approaches healing from an emotional and intuitive perspective. “To be holistic is to understand a symptom in relationship to the whole of one’s life. So, our intake process is pretty extensive,” Jordan
explains. “If someone comes to me to have their tennis elbow treated, I will ask what else is going on in his or her life. I may ask my patients about any traumas they may have experienced. A trauma will be physically held in a body unless it’s been processed. I’ve seen trauma manifest as chronic pain.” Patients range in age from 10 to 70 years old and beyond and include an increasing number of teenagers and young adults who have a variety of stress-related symptoms, as well as for autonomic disorders such as POTS. “Our whole body is an energy system,” she continues. “When we’re stressed, our body is physiologically running in a state of fight or flight. A lot of fight or flight creates system breakdowns in our body, and that’s when we begin having symptoms—such as anxiety, subfertility, digestive issues, insomnia, poor immune response, and pain that act as dashboard lights for what we need to give attention to in our bodies. If you learn to take care of these symptoms when they are small, it doesn’t take much to make them better.” According to Jordan, acupuncture regulates the fight or flight mechanism in our bodies. “Most of us are walking around in a state of fight or flight and don’t even know it.” Acupuncture stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps calm the body and that is the key to healing no matter what the patient is coming in for,” Jordan observes. Source Healing’s practitioners work collaboratively to ensure consistency and to find the best plan forward for their patients. “We work as a team,” Jordan says. “Medicine is an art form based on experience, education, and intuition. When our patients have more than one person working with them, they benefit from our collective expertise.” Jordan seeks to teach her patients that “the body” is a sum of four equally important and connected systems—the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. When these systems are in a state of harmony, the body knows what it needs to do and can balance itself. “I tell my patients that I am just one resource they have, one expert they can consult with, as they become the author of the life they want to have,” she says. “I want to help them write their ‘master thesis’ for a body they have a partnership with as they achieve optimal health.” To learn more about Christie Jordan, L.Ac., and the wellness services provided at Source Healing, visit sourcehealing.com.

DR. LORI HALVORSON, AUD, FAA DUET HEARING PRESERVATION
SPECIALTY: Hearing Preservation and Cognitive Health EDUCATION: Master’s in audiology, Rush University; Doctor of audiology, Arizona School of Health Sciences AWARDS/HONORS: Crain’s Chicago Business Notable Healthcare Hero 2021; Doctor of Audiology Board Certification, American Board of Audiology, Mensa Member; Road America Hearing Safety Partner; Humanitarian Hearing Leader
Dr. Lori Halvorson has established a reputation in the Chicago area for her proven work in hearing health. Known for practicing with purpose, her work as a certified audiologist helps patients improve sound to brain connection so the brain can process speech sounds easier. Reduced listening effort can reduce their risk for dementia, and, ultimately, they can enjoy engagement with family and friends. “Recent research from Johns Hopkins revealed that treating hearing loss early and effectively can reduce cognitive decline by 50 percent,” she says. Dr. Halvorson has developed preventive hearing health care, opening DUET in Lake Forest, the first hearing preservation clinic in the world, a few months ago. The Duet Method includes preventive care exams of the hearing cells, comprehensive ear-to-brain strength training, and a breakthrough in hearing nutrition. For the past three years, she and her team conducted a first-of-its-kind clinical study on a nutraceutical, patented by the University of Michigan, to help stabilize and preserve hearing, finding that the right sound ingredients at a specific volume can help preserve hearing cells, while too many sound ingredients at high volume can kill them. “We are born with 16,000 hearing cells in each ear and, biologically, they are designed to last our lifetime,” she says. “Hearing cells die from metabolic stress related to things like noise exposure, ototoxic medications, and change in blood flow. My passion is to preserve hearing cells, so they do last our lifetime. Our team at DUET Hearing Preservation is on a mission to provide preventive hearing health care to every ear of every age.” She believes that every ear, every age, everywhere needs to hear. She has traveled the world, helping children in orphanages, refugee camps, and hospitals in West Bank, Jordan, Jamaica, and Tanzania, and supplying hearing aids donated by her patients. DUET Hearing Preservation is located at 267 E. Westminster Road in Lake Forest, 847-295-1185 and Lake Forest Hearing is located at 400 Central Avenue, Suite 100, in Northfield, and 1030 North Avenue, Suite 300, in Chicago, 847-295-1185.

Dr. Laura K. Bianchi and Dr. Manoj K. Mehta, two of the area’s top gastroenterologists, provide comprehensive consultative care and expert in-office endoscopic procedures. Both board-certified physicians treat a wide range of GI conditions, such as reflux, IBS, and bowel issues, plus provide routine colorectal cancer screening. Dr. Mehta founded the Endoscopy Center to create a comfortable, state-of-the-art alternative to the busy hospital setting. “Patients on the North Shore are particularly health savvy,” he states. “They know the value of individualized care.” He and his entire staff focus on one patient at a time. “No one is ever treated like a number. Each patient has our full attention,” he says. Dr. Mehta’s interests include IBD, the bacterial microbiome, IBS, eosinophilic esophagitis, and complex second opinions. He is interested in quality improvement and innovation, like bringing artificial intelligence to the Endoscopy Center for several studies. Although new to the Endoscopy Center, Dr. Bianchi has built a thriving local practice over the past 16 years. During GI fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic, she developed an interest in inherited GI cancer syndromes. “There is an increasing incidence of colorectal cancer in young adults,” she shares, “so my focus on cancer prevention through diet and lifestyle modification, genetic counseling, or identifying high-risk patients who may need earlier screening tests is especially important right now.” She established the Women’s GI Center at NorthShore University, with a focus on GI cancer prevention, after seeing that women are often not heard or treated the same as their male counterparts. Both physicians have a reputation for providing high-quality, patient-focused care, for taking the time to listen, and empowering patients to make informed health care decisions. The Endoscopy Center is a fully accredited outpatient facility, with full safety measures, an on-site anesthesiologist, and carries the ASGE’s highest quality certification. Notably, this also allows Dr. Anderson to offer therapeutic treatment options for elderly patients or others who are not candidates for open heart surgery. “We are able to offer the most cutting-edge procedures with the access to the best equipment and tools, while utilizing a multi-disciplinary heart team approach,” she shares. In addition to procedures, she also provides comprehensive preventative care to her patients. “I believe early recognition and establishment of care with a cardiologist is crucial – heart disease remains the No. 1 killer of adults in the U.S.,” she says. “The best way to treat cardiovascular disease is to prevent it from ever developing.” “Women comprise about 4 percent of interventional cardiologists. Therefore, my inspiration comes from all the pioneers in the field who came before me and laid the groundwork for me to be successful,” says Dr. Anderson. Having grown up in Saint Louis, she’s a native of the Midwest and fell in love with Chicago, deciding it was the place to stay and establish her practice. An American Board of Surgery certified surgeon, Dr. Eric W. Anderson brings nine years of surgical experience to the North Shore from his roots in Louisville, Kentucky. His specialty in plastic and reconstructive surgery focuses on rejuvenation of the face, breast, and body, addressing common concerns after having children, losing weight, or the overall progression of aging. He and the expert team at PryorHealth: Chicago North Shore in Northfield help patients maintain health with several approaches, including skin care and non-surgical treatments, while also using the power of surgery to restore years of aging, when needed. “For our patients who are mothers, we restore core strength and also rejuvenate areas that diet and exercise cannot address,” he says. Dr. Anderson is particularly passionate about the intersection between reconstruction and aesthetic principles, restoring function while improving aesthetics. “The specialty of plastic surgery has always been about restoring form and function for our patients,” he says. “Plastic surgery requires both functional and aesthetic principles. They exist in a synergistic dynamic.” He is committed to helping patients achieve their individual aesthetic goals and is dedicated to giving them confidence to have for a lifetime. “I treat all my patients as I would my own family. I would never recommend or perform a procedure that I wouldn’t recommend to my loved one,” he says. “Every patient is unique and requires a specialized treatment plan. The patient-surgeon partnership relies on trust and commitment. I’m honored that patients put their confidence in me to meet their goals, aesthetic and beyond.” Dr. Anderson shares the space with Dr. Mohammed Asif at the PryorHealth: Chicago North Shore office which is part of a network of plastic surgeons and estheticians around the country. Having also completed his plastic surgery fellowship at the renowned Rush University Hospital in Chicago, his surgical proficiency has been featured in Johns Hopkins Magazine and on television networks like CBS and Fox. Dr. Asif has established a robust reputation on the North Shore for being a conscientious and honest surgeon who will always do what is best for his patients to provide them with the highest quality of care. To future medical professionals, he advises, “always do the right thing, be honest and appreciate the rigorous training.” Dr. Asif shares the space with Dr. Eric W. Anderson at the PryorHealth: Chicago North Shore office which is part of a network of plastic surgeons and estheticians around the country. Both surgeons are excited to bring this level of world-class patient care to the community of Northfield. PryorHealth: Chicago North Shore is located at 330 W. With a dedicated approach to care, they cater to a wide range of conditions including common ailments like migraines, anxiety, and depression, to more complex conditions including neuropathy, multiple sclerosis, eating disorders, OCD, ADHD, and autism spectrum disorders—even addressing dementia and memory issues. Diverse in training and experiences, Dr. Bansal and Kalil, along with their skilled medical team, are united by a common inspiration: the restorative powers of nature. This collective enthusiasm for nature’s healing properties not only brings this proficient team together but also significantly shapes their holistic approach to providing quality health care. “Patients often express their appreciation for the numerous plants in our office, the cheerful presence of parakeets, and the soothing sound machines playing waterfall melodies,” they share. “We make a concerted effort to ensure our patients feel comfortable, recognizing the significant courage it takes to confront health issues.” Dr. Bansal shares that if she weren’t a board-certified physician, she would probably be drawn to the role of an FBI profiler because she has a deep, genuine interest in understanding personalities and motivations behind people’s actions and finds criminal behavior particularly intriguing. Kalil, Chief Clinical Officer at Ray of Hope, has always been passionate about pop music since childhood, and if not caring for patients in her work today, she would consider a career as a DJ. “Even now, I find myself completely immersed in creating themed playlists,” she shares. Dr. Heidi Memmel and Dr. Denise Monahan are esteemed, board-certified breast surgeons caring for patients at Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital Cancer Center in the Northern Suburbs. Dr. Memmel specializes in the treatment of all breast diseases, most commonly breast cancer among young or pregnant women. She also holds significant experience in diagnosing and following high-risk gene mutation carriers, working with patients throughout every step of their journey. “I like to partner with my patients to discuss their diagnosis and present all possible options for treatment in an environment that is educational, supportive, and reassuring,” she shares. “It’s so important for young women to know their risk factors for developing breast cancer because there are now things that we can do to reduce that risk and prevent breast cancer, like screening to determine if they carry a high-risk gene mutation. Knowing that one carries those gene mutations can help us begin screening early and potentially diagnose a breast cancer when still easily treatable and curable.” Dr. Monahan joined Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital to build a comprehensive breast care program, offering the best treatment in the Northern Suburbs. “Meeting patients at the time of diagnosis, guiding them through treatment decisions, and ultimately seeing them safely through surgery has always been my focus,” she explains. A top breast surgeon in the field, she also holds a distinct specialty in high-risk breast disease and risk assessment. She serves as medical director of the Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital High-Risk Breast Clinic where she educates women on reducing their risk of breast cancer and guides them in making thoughtful choices to lead healthier lives. She shares, “Not only do we offer the most advanced and proven treatments, but we are constantly refining technique and implementing new information to ensure the best possible outcomes.” Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital Cancer Center, and the Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital High-Risk Breast Clinic are located at 1000 N. Dr. Bindiya G. Patel and Dr. Jori Sheade are two of Northwestern Medicine’s premier medical oncologists, both of whom provide care at Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital Cancer Center and Northwestern Medicine Cancer Centers at both Grayslake and Glenview Outpatient Centers. Dr. Patel is board certified in both Hematology and Medical Oncology and has a clinical interest in lung cancer. She understands inherently that every patient with cancer is different, and she works diligently to create a personalized plan to fit each patient’s specific goals and preferences. “I believe open communication with the patient and each member of the patient’s team is the key to comprehensive cancer care,” she says. “My goal is to help patients navigate this difficult time the same way that I would help my own family navigate a similar situation.” Dr. Sheade most commonly treats breast cancers, which are a special interest and passion for her. Several types of breast cancers exist, each requiring a unique approach to treatment. This can be one of the challenges of treating breast cancer, however, Dr. Sheade chooses to see this element as an upside: “We can truly practice precision medicine,” she shares. “I went into oncology because cancer treatment has undergone rapid changes in the past decade. We are curing more people and those with metastatic disease live for years longer than before. One of the biggest challenges we are confronting is how to balance the treatment of the disease while also maintaining a good quality of life for people living with cancer. There may be a different answer for each person, and it will be incredibly important to individualize treatment for each person.” Both doctors add that oncology is a rapidly innovating field with new treatment options, like immunotherapy, frequently becoming available which has helped make great strides for improving patient survival and quality of life. Her specialty addresses a range of complex conditions including bladder dysfunction, voiding dysfunction, urinary tract infections (UTIs), urinary incontinence, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), bladder cancers, kidney cancers, prostate cancers, and kidney stones. Throughout her years of experience as a practitioner, she’s established a reputation for honesty and transparency with patients, emphasizing ethics as an essential ingredient to her work every day. “My approach to care is that the patient has to be a part of the team—they are crucial to the success of treatment plans,” she shares. “I like the fact that I am able to take care of my patients without barriers. I feel like we are limitless here at Northwestern Medicine and that we can accomplish anything that we need to.” Dr. Ahn adds that the patient experience at Northwestern Medicine has been a distinct benefit for her patients and enhances communication and comfort at all levels. “I always try to make my patients feel comfortable in my office. KRISTI TOUGH DESAPRI, M.D., MSCP, CCD BONE AND BODY WOMEN’S HEALTH
SPECIALTY: Internal Medicine, Women’s Health EDUCATION: Bachelor’s, Tufts University; M.D., University of Texas Health, San Antonio; Internship, New York University; residency, Lenox Hill Hospital, Zucker School of Medicine Hofstra University; Specialized Women’s Health fellowship, Cleveland Clinic
Dr. Kristi Tough DeSapri understands how to advocate for the highest quality women’s health care. She’s regarded as a national expert in the management of menopause and osteoporosis and, since 2010, has been a respected certified practitioner in the field. Her medical practice, Bone and Body Women’s Health, addresses midlife women’s health issues by offering individualized and evidence-based treatments. “Menopause is having its moment in the spotlight,” she shares. “There is an increasing amount of awareness and media coverage discussing the importance of women’s health after their reproductive years.” Yet, this level of commercialization can often translate into unmet promises, she adds. “Many companies target midlife women without any science backing up their claims.” That’s why Dr. DeSapri founded Bone and Body Women’s Health. The membership-based program includes a comprehensive review of hormonal and menopausal symptoms, metabolic health, and a thorough evaluation of bone mineral density using a state-of-the-art Hologic DXA scanner. This work addresses the full spectrum of midlife care for women, including common menopause symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, and sleep disturbance, plus joint pain, painful intercourse, and even cognitive changes like brain fog. The clinic’s tailor-made treatment offerings include hormone therapy and non-hormonal care such as nutrition, lifestyle adjustments, and botanicals to help patients feel their best. “Women do not need to feel dismissed, suffer, or fear perceived consequences of managing symptoms and signs of perimenopause and menopause,” she shares. “They deserve a place where they are seen and heard.” Outside of medicine, Dr. DeSapri is an avid tennis player, yogi, and enjoys playing sports with her three sons. As a recent practice owner, she enjoys the challenge of running a business with the help of her family, and especially likes connecting with like-minded women’s health practitioners across the country. Pelvic floor disorders (PFDs) are very common and can occur at any age. PFDs are a group of conditions that affect the pelvic floor, which includes the muscles, ligaments and connective tissue that support the pelvic organs (bladder, uterus, vagina, and bowel). The pelvic floor prevents these organs from dropping down and helps them work correctly. Twenty percent of American women require pelvic floor surgery before the age of 80 and many more have PFDs that would benefit from surgery. PFDs can severely impact quality of life and women bothered by disruptions and symptoms don’t have to keep suffering. Treatments

offered by the doctors at UChicago Medicine Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery can help to restore their health. Doctors at UChicago Medicine use the latest technology for surgical treatments, allowing patients to avoid overnight hospital stays or having to stay in bed for weeks after surgery. In fact, same-day outpatient surgery means women can go home and be physically active and return to their usual exercise routines right away. Among those physicians are Dr. Maggie Mueller, Dr. Christina Lewicky-Gaupp, Dr. Sarah Collins, and Dr. Kimberly Kenton, all of whom are board-certified and fellowship-trained in the subspecialty of Urogynecology and bring decades of experience to their patients. Dr. Mueller is internationally recognized for her minimally invasive and robotic gynecologic techniques, offering patients customized solutions to their specific needs and goals. Along with her team, she pioneered the Single Port Robotic Surgery program, providing patients with accelerated recovery. She has been published in numerous scientific journals and partnered with organizations including ACGME, AUGS, ABOG in developing curricula, redesigning milestones, and participating in the certification pathway to influence the education of the next generation of Urogynecologic surgeons. Dr. Lewicky-Gaupp, also a skilled surgeon in robotic and minimally-invasive techniques emphasizes a patient-centered, individualized approach to diagnosis and treatment. Her research has focused on clinical outcomes trials as well as the optimization of treatment of maternal birth trauma. She is the medical director of the PEAPOD maternal recovery clinic for new mothers and is also Program Director of the Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery Fellowship at the University of Chicago. Dr. Collins understands the personal and private struggles that women with PFD face, and prioritizes her patients’ health care experience from the first visit. She is heavily involved in researching shared decision-making (SDM) and has developed tools for patients facing decisions about pelvic health treatment options. She is likewise passionate about teaching the next generation of gynecologic surgeons, providing training to medical students, residents, and fellows. Dr. Kenton, a tenured Professor and Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, as well as Chief of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery at UChicago Medicine, has devoted her 20-year career to improving pelvic floor care for women as a surgeon-scientist and educator. She has earned international recognition for her innovative, minimally invasive treatments for women with complex pelvic floor disorders using laparoscopic and robotic surgical techniques. “We have devoted our careers to advancing the field of urogynecology through federally funded research initiatives, advocacy, surgical innovation, and education of the next generation of surgeons,” share the doctors. “We are proud to provide cutting edge clinical care by providing consistent, comprehensive care and offering every evidence-based option available. A key value is making care accessible to women with an advanced, patient-centered model, including a shared decision-making approach to treatment decisions.” This approach is why UChicago Medicine Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery is one of the top providers of pelvic care in the country. For more than two decades, Dr. Micah W. Garb has dedicated his professional life to helping women with obstetrical care and gynecological needs. Today, along with Allison Stein Lieb, APRN, at Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital, he offers complex gynecological care for conditions including abnormal uterine bleeding, endometriosis, menstrual irregularities, ovarian cysts, pelvic pain, uterine fibroids, and more. Northwestern Medicine’s Complex Gynecology clinic is a new specialty-focused service that focuses on creating more specialized gynecologic access to patients with more urgent needs. Dr. Garb says his approach to patient care starts with the patient’s story. “I start by listening carefully to my patient’s health issues,” he says. “I have found over the years that patients will tell you what they need, if you are careful and quiet, and let them guide you in the right way.” Through the advanced tools at Northwestern Medicine, both Dr. Garb and Lieb are able to care for patients from adolescence to menopause, providing treatments that include medical and surgical interventions using minimally invasive surgical techniques. “The care philosophy for women must continue to be broadened to embrace the complex health needs spanning the continuum of a woman’s life stages,” says Dr. Garb. “I work to communicate in a clear and direct manner, informed by latest evidence and guidelines, to empower patients to improve their own health and wellness.” Lieb adds, “My passion is including women of all ages—from their adolescent years and beyond—in their own health care decisions. By educating them on different conditions and management options, they are a vital part of their health care journey. I am honored to be a part of their care team and provide them resources and support along the way.” Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital, Complex Gynecology is located at 1000 N. SPECIALTY: Thoracic Surgery EDUCATION: B.S., Loyola University Chicago.; M.D., Chicago Medical School; General Surgery residency, Rush University; Cardiothoracic Surgery fellowship, Rush University AWARDS/HONORS: Certified, American Board of Surgery; Certified, American Board of Thoracic Surgery
Born and raised in the Chicago area, Dr. Michael Vercillo is a trusted, board-certified thoracic surgeon at Northwestern Medicine. He provides expert specialty care for lung cancer, lung nodules, mediastinal tumors, chest wall problems, pleural space disorders, esophageal cancers, and even hiatal hernias. “With more frequent CT scanning done for other complaints, or for screening, we are finding many more lung nodules and lung cancers,” he shares. “Finding these so early gives us the opportunity to cure patient’s lung cancer with surgery.” As his work often addresses serious conditions, he is well known for being upfront and honest with patients, while still maintaining a keen sense of humor. Dr. Vercillo is regularly performing complex and minimally invasive surgeries with excellent outcomes and minimal complications. Much of that is credited to his dedication to proactively taking care of any issues that may arise and investing time in effective communication at every touch point. “I am a genuine person who will speak directly, honestly, and sometimes humorously,” he shares. “I will explain in easy terms what is going on with you, what all treatment options are, and help patients make the best decision for them.” His wife of nine years is also an impressive surgeon, working in general and colorectal surgery, and the two first met while completing their residencies. Outside of his surgical practice, Dr. Vercillo has a true creative side—he plays guitar, bass, drums, and piano. Since high school, he’s kept up with several music projects, which include playing in bands, recording albums, and performing live shows. He is also an avid cook, especially when it comes to the grill, and enjoys poetry, model building, video games, and astronomy. Northwestern Medicine, Thoracic Surgery is located at located at 1475 E. Sullivan Teaching Award (2007); Northeastern Society of Plastic Surgery, Outstanding Paper, Resident/Fellow Competition (2005); Medical Director Plastic Surgery, Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital (2021)
Dr. Michael A. Howard has built a team, including certified nurse practitioner Sylvia Wier, FNP, centered around the care of women with, or at a high risk of developing, breast cancer. Together, the clinical team focuses on aesthetic and reconstructive breast and body procedures after cancer or other trauma. “Our practice is unique. We provide highly specialized, individualized care in the Northwestern Medicine setting, allowing us to marry the clinical, educational, and academic aspects of better care,” explains Dr. Howard. In his practice, Dr. Howard provides leading-edge care in the field, including autologous, or natural, reconstructive surgical procedures. These techniques can produce more natural and higher quality of life results than other techniques. Wier approaches her patients from an advanced practice nursing perspective to care for them as a whole. In particular, Wier is compassionately mindful of the aesthetic impacts that cancer treatments may have, and offers supportive aesthetic services though the patient’s reconstructive journey. She worked for nearly a decade as an organ transplantation and oncology nurse before transitioning to plastic surgery nursing. Through her own personal experience with breast cancer and reconstruction, she gained the unique perspective and understanding of what her patients are going through. She has a particular interest in the intersection of oncology and aesthetics, believing that one should feel good in their own skin. Based on Dr. Howard’s family experience, and Wier’s personal journey through breast cancer, both individuals have a particular devotion to the care of women facing breast cancer, and those at high risk for developing breast cancer. “That experience gives me an unrelenting motivation to build a nationally recognized microsurgical breast reconstruction and aesthetic breast surgery practice here at Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital—one that draws patients from across the Midwest seeking specialized care in these fields,” says Dr. Howard. Dr. Kevin M. Jackson specializes in minimally invasive spinal surgery, aggressive spinal tumor resection, and complex spinal reconstruction. Most patients come to him for his expertise and surgical opinion on neck or low back pain, often with some symptoms of pain, weakness, or tingling in their arms and legs. “I believe the past 20 years has seen exponential growth in the field of minimally invasive spine surgery,” he shares, “which has allowed for minimal tissue trauma, shorter recovery, and less blood loss and pain following procedures.” Over the next 20 years, he anticipates AI will be a tremendous advantage for radiographic diagnostics with the potential for sorting data “to help physicians and researchers find innovative ways to improve healthcare delivery.” Dr. Michael T. Walsh specializes in surgical diseases of the brain and spine with extensive training in the field, including complex neurosurgery in Japan. His research interests include 3D animation, virtual and augmented reality, and 3D printing, and uses these as education tools for both his medical students and patients. Dr. Walsh has a strong passion for patient education and co-founded Brainsprout Media, a 3D animation company dedicated to using cutting edge storytelling tools to improve communication between health care providers and patients. A favorite quote of Dr. Walsh’s is “It is much more important to know what sort of person has the disease, than to know what sort of disease the person has.” “Even in neurosurgery,” he says, “relationships are of the utmost importance, and, at the end of the day, patients are going to do so much better if they truly know they’ve been cared for.” Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital-Neurosurgery is located at 1000 N. They treat each patient with dignity and respect and work to partner with their patients in every step of their journey toward optimal health. At Aspire Internal Medicine in Northbrook, they treat all common medical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and asthma, and further coordinate with top specialists to treat more complex medical conditions such as heart disease, kidney or liver disease, and cancer. As internal medicine practitioners, Dr. Lulla and Dr. Cienkus play an indispensable role in both evaluating and treating each patient who comes to them with a medical concern. “In essence, we are a patient’s advocate to help guide them through the medical system, whether it be a simple medical issue or a more complex one,” share Dr. Lulla and Dr. Cienkus. After taking the time to understand a patient’s detailed medical history and perform a thorough physical exam, these top practitioners have the experience needed to order the appropriate testing to diagnose a medical condition or help coordinate a referral for the ideal specialist to address it. Both doctors additionally provide preventative care for patients and, based on induvial needs and concerns, expertly advise on ways to live healthier and enhance their overall quality of life. Dr. Lulla and Dr. Cienkus have built a reputation for establishing trust with every patient over decades in the field by closely partnering with each one, operating as their best advocate, and helping to make the right decisions to help improve their health and wellbeing. SPECIALTY: Dr. Richard D. Dr. Shana Margolis and Dr. Richard D. Southgate are two of Northwestern Medicine’s premier specialists in orthopedics and sports medicine. Dr. Margolis specializes in non-surgical physical medicine and rehabilitation care, while Dr. Southgate focuses on joint replacement and adult reconstruction surgery. Both doctors were attracted to their field for the opportunity to help patients feel, function, and move better to enhance their quality of life. “As the population is aging, a lot of people have painful degenerative conditions, so we need more options to keep people active and feeling and functioning well,” says Dr. Margolis. She treats a range of conditions that include conservative management of spinal conditions like back and neck pain, plus other musculoskeletal conditions such as shoulder or knee pain. She has been listening to patients and collaborating with colleagues for more than 15 years, emphasizing treatment approaches that look at each patient holistically. Outside of medicine, she spends her time cooking, entertaining, traveling and boating with family and friends. Dr. Southgate, originally from the Midwest, joins Northwestern from the West Coast where he spent time as the site director for surgery residents at Oregon Health & Sciences University and medical director for Arrowhead Orthopaedics. The core of his work addresses arthritis of the hip and knee, plus hip fractures in older adults. “The ability to wake up and help patients get walking and active without pain,” fuels his work, especially in his older patients, many over 80, who, he says “have decades more life experience than I and wisdom to impart.” He is also dedicated to minimizing the narcotics that orthopedic surgeons typically prescribe. Outside of medicine, he enjoys bicycling, running, and is an avid college sports fan. Northwestern Medicine Lake Forest Hospital-Orthopedics is located at 1000 N. Westmoreland Road in Lake Forest, and 1475 E Belvidere Road in Grayslake, 847-535-8500, nm.org.

SHANA VITEK EQUITY PARTNER BEERMANN LLP
Shana Vitek is an Equity Partner at Beermann LLP, the largest family law firm in Illinois. For the past 20 years, she has practiced divorce and family law exclusively. She handles a wide range of cases, including divorces for business owners, high-profile and high-net-worth clients. Vitek’s ability to handle any type of case has allowed her to become one of only a handful of attorneys in Illinois to be Board Certified in Family Trial Law by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. She is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and serves on the Board of Governors for the Illinois Chapter. “Every family is different, so each case that we handle needs an individualized approach,” she says. “I enjoy going to court and arguing my client’s position, but that typically isn’t a client’s first choice.” In addition to being a litigator, Vitek is also a trained mediator, arbitrator, and collaborative attorney. If a case can be handled using a cooperative approach, that is her preferred process as it allows the parties to decide what is best for their family and maintain confidentiality, keeping personal matters out of the public record. Vitek believes it is important to give back to the community. She is Chair of the Beermann LLP Family Law Clinic. In partnership with Chicago Volunteer Legal Services, this first of its kind family law clinic provides pro bono legal services to individuals going through domestic relations proceedings who could not otherwise afford legal representation. “We feel strongly about giving back to the community, and given the size of our firm, we are in a unique position to make a big difference for clients who would otherwise go unrepresented in family law matters,” says Vitek. PLASTIC SURGERY UPDATE: EMFACE
N
ew Year. Younger face. What could be better than turning back the clock? We at Skin Deep Medical Center and Body by Bloch are excited to introduce EMFACE. This is the first and only hands-free solution for treating facial skin and muscles in just 20 minutes. No needles, no pain, no downtime. Emface simultaneously emits both synchronized radio frequency and HIFES-brand energies. The homogenous radio frequency heats collagen and elastin fibers while the HIFES™ stimulation emits thousands of pulses per session to contract delicate facial muscles. The recommended treatment course for the Emface therapy calls for four 20-minute sessions with each session completed 2 to 14 days apart. Clinical studies concluded that participants who completed the recommended treatment course achieved a 37 percent reduction in wrinkles, 30 percent increase in facial muscle tone, and 23 percent lifting effect—with optimal results seen 6 to 12 weeks after the final treatment. HIFES™ restores and elevates support of facial tissues by selectively contracting muscles and increasing density and quality of muscle structure. Synchronized radio frequency remodels and smoothes skin by heating the dermis and increasing the level of collagen and elastin fibers. You begin to feel tangible results right after the treatments. Positive results are usually reported in 4 to 6 weeks after the last session and continue to improve up to 12 weeks. To see if you are a candidate for this exciting technology schedule a consultation at Skin Deep Medical Spa in Highland Park. Ask about our guarantee.

HEALTH, HAPPINESS, AND HUSTLE
For BIÂN co-founder Mar Soraparu, building the ultimate wellness oasis meant dreaming big and sweating the smallest details.
I
WORDS BY JOE ROSENTHAL / ILLUSTRATION BY ROBERT RISKO
t’s fitting that BIÂN co-founder Mar Soraparu once aspired to be a jazz singer. The same skills that define jazz— improvisation, communication, synthesis, innovation— have been called upon often by the Wilmette resident in her role as Chief Wellness Officer at the heralded River North club, which was founded in late 2020. BIÂN is a 34,000-square-foot oasis for the mind and body that is the brainchild of Soraparu and longtime friends Kevin Boehm, Robb Leone, and Joe Fisher. It’s a club devoted to health and wellness, but that’s a bit like calling the Merchandise Mart a furniture store. Imagine a single destination that weaves together modern health philosophies (Eastern and Western, preventive and healing, mental and physical, strength and flexibility) with a stunning coworking space and add to the mix a sushi bar, restaurant, plunge pools and saunas, event space, riverside patio, beauty spa, and even a listening room filled with vinyl records outfitted with McIntosh amplifiers and turntables. It is, in a word, unique. It’s in the music room where I caught up with Soraparu on an uncharacteristically mild Chicago winter day. “Given your background, I thought you’d appreciate this space,” she said. It was an astute observation given my earlier days as a music journalist; it was also emblematic of the expansive, yet highly personalized nature of BIÂN’s philosophy and service. “There are similar concepts,” Soraparu says, “but not a place that can replace your coworking space, your place of fitness, your studio, your nutrition and coaching, your doctor, your spa and beauty salon and have it all in one place … to have all of those practitioners and providers communicating together for your care.” Indeed, one of BIÂN’s key objectives was this kind of simplification, replacing the need to drive all over town managing multiple providers and programs in pursuit of a healthier, happier, more balanced, and more productive life. Beyond that, the club sees its mission as improving care by helping to reduce the conflicts
and dissonance that can crop up when moving between multiple providers or modes of treatment. As an integral part of this point of view, each club member is assigned an advisor to help make the most of BIÂN. While the club’s nearly 1,000 members use it as a combination workplace and fitness venue during the day, that only scratches the surface of what’s offered, which is why Soraparu believes the advisor program is vital. “We are trying to re-establish the belief in healthcare, in providers, in your natural body— all the things that you can be doing to actually improve your life. And there’s not one way to do it. There are so many, and that’s why we have an advisor who sits down with every single member, gets to know them, understands what they’ve done, where they’re going, and what they need. And we help them to design a plan, and then we connect the providers wherever they start.” With so much accomplished in just a few short years, it’s no surprise that Soraparu is looking out for what’s next. “I’m dead set on trying to figure out how to get us to the North Shore,” she says. “Expansion hopes and dreams are big, and our eyes are everywhere.” Asked what she’s proudest of when she thinks about BIÂN’s evolution and her role in the process, Soraparu becomes reflective, pausing to absorb it all. “Just seeing it continue to live and breathe,” she says. “All of these things that in isolation are just so important and have had so much time and attention put toward them. To me that was the most fascinating thing when we opened. After two years of figuring out what is nutrition, what is our studio, what is our fitness, what’s our spa, what is the advisory program, what do we stand for, what is our menu going to be, what does it feel like? Now, we can see all those pieces come together. Maybe it’s being a mother, but I’m really excited to see how it matures and becomes its own thing.” For more information, visit livebian.com.
