EDITOR’S NOTE

THIS MONTH I WILL BE

Welcome to May, the month to celebrate motherhood. This mother is feeling especially sentimental as my daughter, Redding, will be graduating high school this spring and attending Vanderbilt in the fall. Her unwavering belief in my abilities gave me the courage to accept this position as Editor-in-Chief. I am so grateful to her because this role has been one of my favorites—of course, my most favorite role is “Mom.”

Gracing our cover is Kristen Crawley, mother of three and founder of KNC Beauty. Her chemical-free beauty brand keeps you naturally glam and effortlessly fresh. Celebs and North Shorians can’t get enough of the KNC Beauty products. Swapping collagen masks for diapers, our second feature highlights Amy Kadens, a philanthropic champion and mum of three. Amy’s new initiative, Diaper Dollars, gets diapers into the hands of mothers in need.

Our third feature introduces the “mother of the North Shore,” fertility expert Dr. Eve Feinberg. Eve believes that everyone is deserving of a family, and as president of the nonprofit Chicago Coalition for Family Building, she is helping make fertility treatments accessible to all. We round out the features with Joie DiGiovanni and her jewelry collection featuring unique handcrafted pieces that are easy to wear, versatile, and ageless with a “playful yet elegant” style.

Shore vs. City spotlights Winnetka’s Terrie Reinhard, client relations manager for a luxury accessories brand. Terrie took a break from jet-setting to share her shore and city go-tos.

Heading into a Renaissance-style studio, Art and Artist presents Jorge and Cindy Simes of Simes Studios. Along with their team of artisans, this husband and wife duo are beautifying spaces along the North Shore and far beyond. Continuing to highlight the art world, Auction explores Hindman’s Important Jewelry Sale and Ravinia celebrates a stellar summer lineup at everyone’s favorite outdoor concert venue.

We close the issue with Greg Cameron in Parting Words. Celebrating his 10th year with the Joffrey Ballet, Greg shares his journey to Joffrey. Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers.

SPRING IS IN THE AIR

Lake Forest Open Lands Association (LFOLA) is an independently funded conservation and educational organization devoted to the stewardship of our natural landscapes—ensuring all generations maintain a meaningful and lasting connection to nature. One stunning flora sure to be found in the green spaces of LFOLA is Mertensia virginica (Virginia bluebells)—a harbinger of spring and a reminder of the importance of biodiverse plantings. This small woodland flower is part of the modest camp of early annuals aptly titled “spring ephemerals.” Their foliage begins with a sangria hue transforming into a soft green. The charming blossoms emerge pink before opening into a sky blue bell. Being some of the first to emerge, they are also the first to leave. As the trees leaf out and the canopy fills in or as drier weather sets in, the Mertensia virginica will drop their seeds and wait again for the next winter’s end. Their “ephemeral” status reminds us to plant a variety of species that will provide aesthetic and ecological value through seasonal changes. For more information, visit lfola.org.

The palm-sized, ultraviolet light-based device will zap a room clean within minutes, killing up to 99.99 percent of bacteria, viruses, germs, and pathogens, and aims to change the way people disinfect. With a chic, Apple-like design and easy-to-use functionality—simply affix the Beacon device to a wall and then control its operation and scheduling with the Beacon app—it’s set to help solve a global dilemma: how to safely and effectively reduce the presence and spread of germs. The bonus? It’ll be done in a modern and streamlined way, perfect for any interior. For more information visit beaconlight.co.

SHORE CITY

Ten years ago, TERRIE REINHARD moved from Los Angeles to the North Shore with her husband and two boys. Reinhard quickly fell in love with her mid-century ranch house, which became the perfect backdrop to showcase her small but growing contemporary art collection. Always an admirer of fashion, Reinhard works in retail marketing for a luxury fashion brand. Reinhard has long been committed to helping young people succeed and thrive despite difficult circumstances. That commitment led Reinhard to start a consulting venture that helped young designers grow their businesses and create well-rounded collections. With that effort behind her, Reinhard now volunteers as a Court Appointed Special Advocate for Lake County youth in the foster care system. This style setter put down her work phone and tear sheets to share her city and shore favorites with Sheridan Road

CHOOSE WISELY

Strategic Divorce attorney

Michone J. Riewer shares tips for finding the right divorce attorney to represent you and your family.

In the same way that no one wants to have an illness, no one wants to get divorced. But like finding the right doctor, finding the right divorce attorney is critical to a successful outcome. To get the right fit, there are many things to consider.

Do you want a firm or do you want a person who works alone? Do you want someone who specializes in issues involving children? Do you want someone who’s familiar with small businesses? Do you want someone who understands executive compensation and restricted stock units? Do you want someone who is familiar with each of the judges in the county and can advise you regarding what to expect? Do you want someone who’s able to listen and can help you create a strategy for your family? Do you want someone who can quickly review and understand financial information? Do you want someone who understands retirement assets? Do you want someone who patiently answers your questions? Do you want someone who can write and effectively communicate? Do you want someone who is going to be a fierce and effective advocate in court? Do you want someone who can sit down at a conference table, find a creative solution, and bring people to the middle?

In my experience, every one of these qualities is important and in fact, you deserve to have nothing less than an attorney who has it all.

One of the common misconceptions is that if you want your divorce to be amicable, you should choose an attorney who does not specialize in trial or litigation. As a result, because you don’t want to go to trial and you don’t want to be involved in litigation, you choose someone with no trial experience. This could end up putting you at a disadvantage.

I have found that having an attorney who has the strength and experience to go to trial, when needed, is actually a deterrent to both litigation and trials. Strength changes everything. It’s much more effective to walk into a room to negotiate a settlement and create an amicable resolution if your attorney has the strength and experience to go to trial. You are much less likely to be bullied into a settlement that does not make sense.

Similarly, if you’re focused on child and custody issues, you may choose an attorney who only specializes in those issues and is not as experienced in the financial and property area of divorce. However, once the child issues are resolved, you’ll quickly learn that you need an attorney who has the knowledge and expertise in the financial area to make sure that you and your children are financially set up for success. Both areas are important to the successful resolution of your divorce.

Again, just like when you find a new doctor, when choosing your divorce attorney, interview more than one. Ask questions, not only about the one issue that is most important to you but about each of the areas of divorce. Ask them about their strategy and notice whether they have listened to and responded to your questions and concerns. Find someone who will be pleasant to deal with, and who you feel is worthy of your trust.

The divorce process is much easier when you choose the right divorce attorney to guide you through the process.

PREPARE EARLY TO SELL YOUR BUSINESS

Trusted advisors can help review your goals and optimize outcomes.

Amid the daily challenges of running and growing your business, preparing to sell it may feel like the last thing you need to worry about. “Even if you’re convinced a sale is years away, business and market conditions or your personal situation can change, sometimes faster than you think,” says Lisa Bertagna, Senior Vice President, Fifth Third Bank Private Bank Chicago.

The better prepared you are to evaluate an offer, the easier it will be to navigate the process and make decisions that are advantageous for you, your family, and your business. Being prepared enables a business owner to be proactive and strategic in their response.

Planning involves multiple factors. Some key steps include:

Assemble an experienced team. Start gathering trusted advisors with a variety of experience and expertise right now. “Middle-market companies should have a solid team of advisors—including bankers, lawyers, accountants, and wealth managers—in place before considering a sale offer,” Bertagna says.

Understand what you need from a sale. Having a clear vision of your next venture will make for an easier transition. An up-to-date company valuation could help you understand how close you are to being able to finance future dreams. “Fifth Third’s investment bankers often help owners understand valuation in the context of various strategic alternatives months and often years ahead of a sale,” says Bertagna.

Consider your estate and charitable goals. Transferring ownership interest to family members, trusts, or other entities before a sale could help you capture allowable valuation discounts and reduce transfer taxes later. If charitable giving is among your goals, your team can help plan for supporting the causes you care about, including donations and creating a charitable trust or foundation.

Assess the impact on your personal finances. You may have some business expenses, such as vehicles, that serve both business and personal purposes. Since these will become personal expenses after the sale, you need comprehensive financial planning prior to a sale.

Key steps when responding to an offer include:

Review your objectives. Consider the long-term goals you established for your post-sale life. Ask yourself whether this opportunity will support those goals.

Protect your information. As you try to learn about the buyer and the offer, be sure to avoid sharing too much information early. A nondisclosure agreement, drafted with your lawyer’s help, could protect confidential information and prevent the buyer from approaching your employees if put in place early.

Do your due diligence. Think about how well you know the prospective buyer and whether they have the financial wherewithal to complete the acquisition.

Prepare for their due diligence. Prospective buyers will want to see that your contracts are in order and that your financial statements follow accounting standards. They will also want to know about your liabilities for legal issues or taxes.

Carefully negotiate the letter of intent (LOI). A lawyer who specializes in M&A can help ensure you understand the full implications of the deal. “A transparent LOI that clearly sets out deal terms, including clear consideration language and the parties’ obligations, will leave less to chance and misinterpretation,” Bertagna says.

Foster a competitive process. One reason buyers make unsolicited offers is to increase their chances of buying companies at below-market values. Researching other potential suitors could put you in a more competitive position to attain the best-possible price and outcome.

The goals you hope to achieve from a sale are likely to evolve over time. “The sale process can be complicated and unpredictable it’s so important to be ready to adapt along the way,” Bertagna says.

Every business has an origin story but Simes Studios’ story is a striking one. Like the Studios’ work, this origin story is a romantic one set against the backdrop of Old World elegance but infused with New World bravado and innovation. It is an origin story that has led to a decades-long presence in Chicago where Simes Studios’ signature style is a coveted element of highend design projects.

The story begins in Buenos Aires during a Fellini-esque dinner party at the home of a renowned Argentinean art collector. There Cindy, a young American painter, was seated next to another artist, the talented and charming Jorge. Friendship, collaboration, love, and marriage quickly followed. Buenos Aires was the ideal place for the couple to hone their decorative painting skills—no ready-made glazes, plasters, or specialty tools existed so all had to be created from scratch before being applied to the Beaux Arts and Art Deco residences in this European-like city. Argentina’s teetering economic state and a 30 percent inflation rate, however, drove the couple’s decision to return to the United States, where they choose Chicago for its livability, outstanding architecture, and vibrant art and design community.

The couple drove into Chicago on St. Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1988, with all

their belongings stashed in a second-hand Chevy station wagon. Their first impressions of the city’s gray, somber landscape on that dreary day were literally frosty but those impressions quickly thawed after a well-connected Chicago socialite referred them to more than 12 leading local designers.

Simes Studios is now celebrating its 35th anniversary, and the team of two has expanded to include a permanent staff of artists who possess a keen eye for architecture and design and degrees in Fine Art. The firm functions like a Renaissance workshop with its blend of individual artistic talents; each beginning as an apprentice and progressing to senior artist status.

The firm is renowned for its singular style, which incorporates historical references, cross-cultural influences, and innovative striking visual effects. Think sweeping murals, custom glazes, trompe l’oeil, faux bois, marblezing, and embellished furniture and floors. Their eglomise, a French technique of back painted and gilded glass that is often used as a backsplash, is prized by a national audience of designers and architects for its fanciful designs ranging from hand-painted cherry blossoms to gilded rock n’ roll lyrics.

Some recent notable projects include an eglomise mural triptych made of three layers and nine panels of glass, with a 12-foot footer inspired by origami. In other words, 1,200 pounds of ethereal folding, using super thin platinum lines and mirroring techniques for the front and back of the piece to create a sense of evanescence.

“Sometimes you see the mirror and sometimes you don’t. The client wanted something you can see through at times, but that also divided the rooms in an artful fashion,” explains Jorge.

Another project involved a Lake Forest couple who, after buying the last three acres of a famous estate, wanted to acknowledge

the property’s history. Through extensive research, Simes Studios developed a historical mural for the couple’s main staircase depicting the original estate and its outbuildings.

Jorge observes, “Historically, we are at a point of privilege in terms of access to inspirational images and their content. We dedicate ourselves to research and development as well as furthering our knowledge of techniques and styles.”

The dining room of the Illinois Governor’s Mansion in Springfield is a stunning example of this exacting research. The landscape painting featuring state landmarks replicates the painting style that would have been used when the house was originally built.

“I love the puzzle. When a designer comes to us and discusses the style of the home, we work in unison with the designer and architect to recreate the concept the client wants,” says Cindy.

While most of their projects are found in luxury residential spaces, Simes Studios also periodically does pro bono work. The firm transformed the foyer at RefugeeOne, which offers refugee resettlement services, with welcoming words in numerous languages.

“We are crafting an illusion and projecting it through images organized in a certain way. It’s about the sense of comfort and the well-being it creates,” explains Jorge.

SHERIDAN ROAD 52
Entry foyer, eight silver shagreen elomise panels on walls.

As for some of their most unique requests? Cindy recalls, “In a David Adler-designed living room, we recently had to enhance a new pine crown molding and a panel above the fireplace because the new pine did not match the original.”

After winning four awards for applied arts from the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art, Simes Studios has cemented its reputation in the classical design field. While paying respect to the revered art techniques and the exceptional quality of the past, Simes Studios also specializes in finding innovative ways to create a contemporary aesthetic, incorporating environmentally friendly materials.

“Trends have evolved over the years and have become more contemporary. Unique plasters and gilding are very popular as well as subtle gradations of color,” notes Cindy.

Thus, Simes Studios’ origin story, a story rooted in decorative painting, evolves ... one exquisite project at a time.

HAMMER TIME: DAVID WEBB EDITION

Hindman’s May 16th Important Jewelry auction is full of classic and unique jewelry featuring diamonds, colored stones, and rare antique pieces. Among an array of jewelry by iconic designers, are the classic designs of revered American jeweler David Webb. Webb is best known for his bold, modern jewelry with yellow gold, colorful gemstones, alluring enamelwork, and exotic animal designs. His creations have been worn by celebrities including Jackie Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor, and Helen Mirren. David Webb pieces continue to be produced in New York City today using his more than 40,000 original designs and drawings and remain highly sought-after and collectable.

Karina Hammer, a senior jewelry specialist at Hindman whom you may recall from our May 2022 issue, returns to Sheridan Road to share her thoughts on a few of the standout lots being closely watched by the team as they prepare for the sale.

Yellow Gold, Diamond, and Enamel

Horse Bracelet

Estimate: $35,000–55,000

“David Webb is renowned for these eye-catching animal bracelets. This quintessential example in white enamel is fabulous and whimsical. He has been making animal jewelry since very early on in his career, so this would be a perfect first piece to own if you are new to collecting his designs.”

Yellow Gold and Diamond Necklace

Estimate: $10,000–20,000

“Looking for a classic gold necklace with a little more edge? Look no further than this linked yellow gold and diamond necklace. It would pair perfectly with a white collared shirt or dressing up a black dress.”

Diamond, Ruby, and Azurmalachite Necklace

Estimate: $25,000–35,000

“Lusting for something more colorful? I’d recommend this amazing Azurmalachite necklace, a true showstopper. This is such a powerful piece, and a great illustration of David Webb’s love of bold, vivid gems.”

Jade, Diamond and Lapis Ear Clips

Estimate: $7,000–9,000

“These vibrant earrings are another excellent display of Webb’s work. The contrast of translucent jade and opaque lapis lazuli is archetypal of Webb’s stone pairings in his jewelry.”

Yellow Gold Bangle Bracelet

Estimate: $8,000–12,000

“I would wear a gold cuff bracelet every day. If you don’t have a statement cuff like this in your collection, this would be an easy one to add. Plus, I love the ‘superhero’ vibe it presents!”

ON HER NIGHTSTAND

“I’m re-reading Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind. The book is a symphony of words, truly a dark classic. I am also reading An American in Provence: Art, Life and Photography by Jamie Beck. Her “Isolation Creation” photography series is gorgeous. It was her creative response to the global isolation created by the COVID pandemic. I have one of the prints hanging in my den. I also head development for the Kenilworth Cookbook Club, so notes about our annual fundraiser and its raffle packages tend to pile up on my nightstand.”

ON HER MOBILE

“I’m obsessed with Greg Penn’s @manwithahammer. He is an absolutely charming English gent, who is DIY renovating an 1804 former naval Georgian home in Plymouth, England. I also love Blake Gifford’s @signedblake. That woman can do EVERYTHING; she is a constant source of inspiration in fashion, design, and home renovation.”

IN HER EARBUDS

“I love the podcast SmartLess. Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes are hilarious together. Normal Gossip is another podcast that is amazing. It’s funny, odd, and utterly delightful.”

Ravinia Steans Music Institute (RSMI)—Ravinia Festival’s distinguished summer training program for young professional voice, jazz, piano, and string musicians—enters its 36th season this June on a bittersweet note, saluting world-renowned violinist Miriam Fried for her 30-year leadership of the Program for Piano & Strings as she prepares to step down as program director of the artistic oasis for classical instrumentalists at summer’s end.

The Program for Piano & Strings is an international destination for young professional pianists and string players devoted to honing and advancing their talents as collaborative artists. The five-week tuition-free program, which takes place between June 18 and July 22 this summer, provides life-changing studies and performance opportunities with a rotating faculty of some of the world’s leading classical musicians, including Fried.

For more than 20 years, Fried has selected a handful of alumni to join her on a national tour in the spring to showcase the “uncommon polish and energy” (Washington Post) that arises from each artist after their RSMI fellowships, focused on timely, emotive works in the ever-growing chamber music repertoire. This March, the tour resumed with its first performances since 2019, featuring Fried with five award-winning alumni in concerts on their home stage at Ravinia, as well as at Carnegie Hall in New York and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

Over the decades, Fried has trained numerous musicians who have gone on to distinguished, often award-winning, careers and credit her as an integral part of their training and success.

“We’re pleased to salute our own Miriam Fried, the director of the Steans Music Institute Piano & Strings program, who concludes her three-decade-long tenure in that role this summer,” says Ravinia Festival President and CEO Jeff Haydon.

“We look forward to honoring Miriam and her countless contributions to the world of classical music in a special tribute concert on July 20, with a salon of favorite music and memories from RSMI alumni,

including the Ariel Quartet, pianist Henry Kramer, violinist Ayano Ninomiya, and cellist Karen Ouzounian.”

Fried herself will be featured on other Ravinia Festival dates this summer, including as the leader of a master class on June 28, on a program of Ultimate Brahms and Haydn with fellow RSMI faculty on July 1, and as a soloist on Brahms’s concerto with Marin Alsop and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on July 15.

Fried has been recognized for years as one of the world’s preeminent violinists, with accolades like the grand prizes of the Paganini and Queen Elisabeth Competitions. A consummate musician—equally accomplished as a recitalist, concerto soloist, and chamber musician—she has been lauded for her passion and technical mastery. Fried has played with virtually every major orchestra in the United States and Europe and has been a frequent guest with the principal orchestras of Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, New York, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh, as well as with the Israel Philharmonic, the London Symphony, the Royal Philharmonic, and the Vienna Symphony.

MOTHER’S DAY TEA CAKES

WORDS, RECIPE, AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS

SHERIDAN ROAD 64 RECIPE

While practices honoring mothers date back to ancient times, the modern holiday of Mother’s Day originated in the United States. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson designated the second Sunday in May as a national holiday to honor mothers. For more than a century, the carnation has been the official flower of Mother’s Day. The flower’s soft petals cloak a surprising hardiness, which makes the carnation a natural choice as the symbol of a mother’s pure and enduring love. The sweet frosting of these tiny tea cakes is a nod to the lovely white and pink carnations sure to be found in many a Mother’s Day bouquet.

With olive oil rather than butter in the batter, the tea cakes have a supremely tender crumb and create perfect little petit fours for mom, or for anyone who has nurtured and mothered you best.

These tea cakes would look lovely topped with a blueberry and tiny mint leaf and displayed on a silver platter, nestled around a vase of ruffled carnations. Happy Mother’s Day!

Yield:

3 dozen 2-inch cakes

INGREDIENTS

For the cake:

• 6 large eggs

• 1 1/2 cups pure cane sugar

• Grated zest from 1 fresh lemon

• Juice from 1 fresh lemon

• 1 cup extra-virgin olive oil

• 1 cup whole milk

• 3 cups all-purpose flour

• 3 teaspoons baking powder

• 1 teaspoon salt

For the lemon icing:

• 2 cups confectioners’ sugar

• 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (OR for pink icing: 2 tablespoons lemon juice plus 1 tablespoon unsweetened pomegranate or pomegranate/blueberry juice)

For the garnish:

• Blueberries, washed and patted dry

• Several sprigs of mint leaves

METHOD:

With oven rack in center position, preheat oven to 350 degrees. Coat a 13 x 18 x 1-inch-deep half-sheet pan with vegetable spray. Line the pan with parchment paper lengthwise (the vegetable spray will help the parchment stick to the pan) leaving a 2-inch overhang of paper at both ends of the pan. Spray parchment with more vegetable spray and line pan with parch-

ment paper widthwise as well, again leaving a 2-inch overhang on both sides of the pan. Once cake is baked, the overhanging paper will allow you to easily lift the cake out of the pan to your work surface.

Combine lemon zest with juice in a small bowl. Place this bowl, along with your cup of measured olive oil and cup of measured milk, next to your stand mixer. In the bowl of the mixer fitted with whisk attachment, add the eggs and sugar and whip at high speed for ½ a minute. With mixer still running, add the olive oil in a slow, steady stream. Reduce speed to low and repeat with the milk. Beat in the lemon zest and juice. Turn off mixer.

In a separate bowl, stir flour, baking powder, and salt together with a fork. Turn mixer to low speed again; add flour mixture to batter in three parts, whisking between each addition and scraping down the sides of the mixer bowl. Scrape any lemon zest fragments clinging to the whisk attachment back into the batter. Pour and spread batter to fill parchment lined halfsheet pan. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes at 350 degrees until a toothpick inserted in the cake comes out clean. The top of the cake will be smooth and glossy and pale gold, not browned. Remove cake from oven and cool cake in pan for 5 minutes.

Using the parchment paper overhangs on the short sides of the pan as handles, carefully lift the cake out of the pan onto a clean flat work surface. Once cake has completely cooled, use a 2-inch biscuit cutter to cut cake into circles. (Save trim for snacking.)

Whisk powdered sugar with lemon juice in a wide shallow bowl until you have a glossy, smooth icing. Dip the top of each cake circle into the glaze, allowing excess to drip back into bowl. Place each little cake right side up on a serving platter. Top with a blueberry and tiny mint leaf. Serve.

The private island escape of Oil Nut Bay is luring vacationers as well as second homebuyers to the British Virgin Islands.

Tucked away in the breathtaking North Sound region of Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands lies Oil Nut Bay, a unique 400-acre resort that has quickly risen to the top of the list for both vacationers and second homebuyers. Known for its privacy, the idyllic resort includes luxury homes and villa rentals all with stunning views of the cerulean waters. The exclusive property’s accommodations range from cliffside one-bedroom suites to six-bedroom villas, some as high as 440 feet above sea level. Oil Nut Bay is also committed to preserving the incomparable beauty of this island paradise; 50 percent of the land at the resort remains designated as open space.

“We created Oil Nut Bay as a private resort community with world-class amenities and activities that celebrate the beauty of the BVI and the barefoot luxury lifestyle,” says developer David V. Johnson. “Each home lives in harmony with the natural landscape, accentuating its raw beauty. We’re proud to welcome a diverse collection of guests and owners who can enjoy the great outdoors with the island’s near-perfect year-round weather.”

Johnson, also the mastermind behind Michigan’s beloved Bay Harbor waterfront development, has a knack for creating tranquil resort destinations that resonate with guests while also thoughtfully embracing the local landscape. Oil Nut Bay’s homes complement the natural topography of Virgin Gorda. Architectural marvels include the hilltop Lion Heart Estate, home to Halo, a

five-bedroom villa that is a masterwork of biophilic design, and the brand-new cliffside Constellations estate, complete with its own beach access and panoramic views around every corner.

Oil Nut Bay is the site of the only internationally certified heliport in the region, making for an easy jaunt in from other islands. Beginning next month, American Airlines will be offering direct flights from Miami to Tortola; Oil Nut Bay is then just a 45-minute boat ride away from Tortola Airport, or a short flight by helicopter. The North Sound area—also home to Sir Richard Branson’s Necker and Moskito Islands—is known for boasting the very best in low-density development within a niche Caribbean micro market.

“This is an exceptionally unique opportunity for second-home buyers and vacationers alike. Oil Nut Bay’s location within the BVI offers quick access to surrounding islands. St. Barth’s, for example, is only 45 minutes away. Yet, while at Oil Nut Bay, you feel as if you have found something undiscovered. We are thrilled to be partnering with the Oil Nut Bay team to enhance their sales and marketing efforts and introduce our local client base to this hidden gem in the BVI. There really is no other place like it,” says Katie Moor of the Dawn McKenna Group with Coldwell Banker.

Oil Nut Bay prides itself on its fine amenities including a

beach club with three pools, world-class dining options like the Nova overwater restaurant and bar, a wellness center with gym, pickleball and tennis courts, two helipads, Deep Bay Watersports Center, a 93-slip marina, and the Nut House Kids Club. All these amenities are easily accessible by electric golf cart on this car-less island; just take care not to be distracted by the sight of whales breaching on the horizon.

The resort offers abundant opportunities for eco-tourism. The Turtle Tagging Boating Adventure provides the chance to safely catch a turtle alongside an on-board researcher. After the turtle is measured, it is tagged before being released so guests can continue to follow the animal’s adventures. Landlubbers can visit the on-site animal rescue barn that is home to horses, emus, tortoises, and flamingos. The resort’s new Ranger Program allows kids to channel their inner adventurer through activities ranging from snorkeling in ocean reefs to kayaking in the mangroves to stargazing and naming constellations.

Oil Nut Bay is a sanctuary for guests seeking a temporary respite or homeowners interested in purchasing a slice of paradise. Don’t hesitate—a dreamlike destination is just a call or keystroke away.

BACK TO THE FUTURE

Interior designer Jessica Margot transforms an original Howard Van Doren Shaw summer cottage into a 21st-century showcase.

Entryway vignette SHERIDAN ROAD 74
HOME TOUR

Acontemporary of Frank Lloyd Wright, Howard Van Doren Shaw was recognized as one of the leading country house architects of the early 20th century. In addition to his noted work on Lake Forest’s Market Square, from 1894 to 1926 Van Doren Shaw designed a number of stately houses in an area stretching from Lake Forest to Lake Geneva.

As Chicago-area realtors with Compass, Charlie and Lauren Wood were well versed in the significance of a Van Doren Shaw design pedigree. So, when a 1910 Van Doren Shaw home in east Highland Park offered the couple a chance to own a piece of local history, they practiced the real estate equivalent of carpe diem and bought it. Their next move was to contact a former client to give the house a 21st-century makeover while honoring its early 20th-century roots.

“Charlie and Lauren were actually my realtors when I sold my home in Lake Forest,” says Jessica Margot, owner and founder of Jessica Margot Design. “When they found their new home, they knew that I could bring their vision to life.”

“The Woods are well traveled, and they wanted their home to reflect this,” Margot says. “Their home design is inspired by their trips to Tulum, Majorca, Barcelona, and Bali. Our goal was to create an antique wabi-sabi meets James Bond kind of vibe.”

The fundamental principle of “wabi-sabi” interior design is a connection to the earth and natural materials with an emphasis on authenticity. Thus, when given the choice, Margot always opted for something original for the Woods, rather than something mass-produced.

“The home had so many of the beautiful Craftsman-style

elements Van Doren Shaw is known for,” Margot says. “These provided a great starting point for our design, but our ultimate goal was to give this entire home a facelift and reimagine it for how a family lives today.”

Because the home had been largely untouched for the last several decades, structural attention needed to first be paid to the home’s plumbing and electrical systems, as well as to its cedar shingle exterior and leaded glass windows. Once this was out of the way, the real fun could begin.

And the fun begins just inside the front door, with a foyer wrapped in a tone-on-tone, cream-and-gold textured Kelly Wearstler wallpaper. Treasures from the Woods’ travels accent the entryway and give a taste for what’s to come.

“It’s an eclectic mix where sexy meets simple,” says Margot, who shopped for many of the home’s new pieces from Golden Triangle, a Chicago source for unique cultural artifacts, furniture, and antiques. Circa Lighting was another Margot go-to for statement lighting that serves both function and fashion.

The foyer leads visitors to a reimagined first floor. “We opened up a number of walls on the first floor to create a more open floor plan for the living spaces,” Margot explains. “The kitchen, which is the hub of this home, was itty bitty with no storage—it was kind of depressing. We made it very warm and inviting with two different stones, one on the perimeter of the kitchen and another on the painted island for subtle contrast.”

The stone complements the European oak cabinetry and light oak flooring making it feel like a home one might book for a Barcelona holiday. The kitchen opens into a light-filled dining room with a mid-century modern dining table and chairs.

Office SHERIDAN ROAD 75 HOME TOUR

HOME TOUR

“The dining room has built-in cabinets on either side of a doorway that opens to the foyer, with wine and beverage refrigerators, a gorgeous antique mirrored backsplash, leathered stone countertop, and painted cabinetry that ties back to the kitchen island. Everything is incredibly sleek, yet functional. It’s stunning.”

Charlie’s first floor office is striking, with grey and gold Romo wallpaper accented by deep mauve paint on the ceiling and trim. Richly painted, arched bookcases flank an original fireplace that was kept largely intact. The space is sophisticated, modern, and masculine—perfect for Charlie to escape to.

Surprisingly, one of Margot’s favorite spaces on the first floor is the new mudroom.

“We moved the laundry room to the second floor,” she says. “We then created the most perfect mudroom complete with a dog bath and lockers created by floor-to-ceiling cabinetry. We have a mini-Euro washer and dryer in there, too, which makes the space just as practical as it is pretty.”

A tour of the first floor isn’t complete without a proper visit to the enclosed porch, which contains a playful element reminiscent of the faraway places the Woods have visited.

“Lauren and Charlie wanted to feel like they were swinging from the century-old trees you can see through the porch’s huge windows,” she says. So, Margot found one-of-a-kind swings from ARMAZEM. design in Chicago.

Heading upstairs, the house’s numerous bedrooms provided Margot an opportunity to incorporate that most 21st-century of needs—ample closet space.

“If you can believe it, we converted two bedrooms into clos-

ets for Lauren and Charlie—talk about a way to keep a marriage happy,” says Margot. “I’m so excited about how these turned out. They each have their own bathroom and dressing space. And when you’re in them, you feel as if you’re in the most luxurious of hotels.”

An upstairs sunroom was transformed into the laundry room with a new island in the middle of the space. Three of the room’s four walls are windows so “even in the gray of a Chicago winter, the room is flooded with natural light, which is just awesome,” describes Margot.

The home’s redesign unfolded in phases over the last 15 months, and Lauren and Charlie look forward to future projects with Margot as their family grows. Margot prides herself on being able to adapt to her clients’ visions for their personal dwellings.

“Homes and clients like these don’t come along very often—the Wood family is so important to me,” Margot says. “Because this house is on a national historic registry, we had a serious responsibility to respect how we recreated it. It’s not all new and modern.

Lauren and Charlie’s global aesthetic and unique collections guided everything you see here. The magic happens when you bridge the gap between the old and new.”

Trendsetter Kristen Noel Crawley has always had her eye on the latest beauty trends and, in her early 20s, the North Shore-based maven started sharing her favorite finds on social media. Crawley slowly began to garner a loyal following on Instagram—today nearly 500,000 strong—and later caught the attention of ELLE magazine, which offered Crawley her own monthly beauty column to explore new products, techniques, and self-care rituals.

Her columns covered topics ranging from a photo diary of a trip to Cannes, a review of La Prairie’s $1,200 serum (spoiler alert: it’s worth the price) to a how-to on preventing stretch marks during pregnancy—all written in the name of beauty.

“I’ve always loved beauty,” says Crawley. “I remember experimenting with my mother’s makeup as a kid and, later, overplucking my eyebrows in the ‘90s. ELLE let me experiment and get my foot in the door within the beauty industry.”

In 2016, Crawley pushed that proverbial door wide open with her launch of KNC Beauty, an all-natural brand with a mission to keep you “naturally and effortlessly fresh.” She’d been inspired after a trip to Tokyo where, while wandering through cult-favorite discount store Don Quijote, a wall of lip masks caught her eye.

“I’d been suffering all winter in Chicago with dry, cracked lips,” explains Crawley. “Nothing seemed to work. I loved the idea of a lip mask but hated the plethora of toxic ingredients. When I got home, I searched for a natural alternative, and there wasn’t one. That’s when I decided to start my own brand.”

The first product in KNC Beauty’s portfolio? The Lip

Mask, which uses moisturizing plant extracts to protect lips from the elements. With plumping collagen and soothing rose flower oil, vitamin E, and bitter cherry extract, the mask yields soft, smooth, and plump lips. It took off and is sold at retailers ranging from Sephora and Moda Operandi to Revolve and Nordstrom.

The brand now counts celebrities like Bella Hadid, Emma Stone, and Kim Kardashian as fans, has partnered with big-name brands like Champion and A Bathing Ape, and even won a coveted Allure Best of Beauty Award.

Today, the multi-million-dollar skincare brand has products not just for lips but also for the eyes and face. Think retinol- and aloe-infused eye masks that depuff, illuminate, and reduce redness, and bio-cellulose face masks designed to hydrate, brighten, and soothe. The Lip Mask line has expanded to include a lip balm and scrub that promises to exfoliate, prime, and prep your pout.

“I really love the three-step system, which includes the lip scrub, lip mask, and the lip balm,” says Crawley. “These three products will save your lips in the wintertime and will give you a perfectly kissable and soft pout, no matter what. They have amazing ingredients and a high-end formulation that consists of shea butter, kukui oil, and moringa oil—your lips will love it.”

Crawley’s other product picks include Kim Kardashian’s SKKN product line; U Beauty; Joanna Czech; iS Clinical (for cleansers and moisturizers, specifically!); La Mer for eye cream; and Naturium’s multi-oil and body cleanser.

“As a mom of three, beauty has to be simple, uncomplicated, and effective,” says Crawley. “That is the essence of KNC Beauty

and of so many other brands that I love, trust, and use on a daily basis. Unfortunately, I don’t have the time to do all the things that I once was able to do. So, when I’m doing my skincare routine or my at-home facials, I have to really be able to see the difference.”

For the last few months, Crawley has been on maternity leave following the birth of her daughter Aya in the fall of 2022. But, in the meantime, she’s been working on a few new products that she “can’t wait to share with everyone.” They will debut this year.

She’s also been hard at work paying it forward. During her maternity leave, Crawley launched a partnership with Huggies aimed at addressing diaper insecurity in the United States. One in three U.S. families struggles to provide diapers for their children and often resort to using t-shirts as makeshift diapers. To help new parents “Take Back the T-Shirt,” she designed three t-shirts with Huggies with 100 percent of the proceeds donated to the National Diaper Bank Network.

A longer-term initiative began for Crawley after the murder of George Floyd by a police officer in Minneapolis in 2020. Crawley says she felt “helpless” watching the protests across the country during the COVID-19 lockdown. “Other people were putting their lives on the line to make a change,” she says. “I wanted to find a way to do my part and help women like me.”

That’s how the KNC School of Beauty was created. It’s a free mentoring program that highlights Black- and person-of-color-founded beauty brands to address inequity within the beauty industry.

Crawley—along with advisors Alice Lin Glover and Marie Kouadio Amouzame of EADEM; Bridgette Howard of Parlor West Ventures; Latoia Fitzgerald of Lionne Clothing; and Sami Miro of Sami Miro Vintage—works with the founders on everything from how to launch a brand and file for a trademark to how to lead an investment round and create a business plan.

Every session, KNC Beauty and its partner Revlon give away a $10,000 small business grant. So far, they’ve given away more than $40,000.

“When I launched KNC Beauty, I was one of the only founders of a Black-owned company that was sitting on luxury shelf space,” explains Crawley. “And now, with programs like the Fifteen Percent Pledge, more retailers are dedicating their resources—and shelf space—to promoting and elevating Black and POC-owned brands.”

In terms of what’s next for the beauty industry, Crawley expects to see increased technological advances, more inclusion and diversity, and skincare products aimed at generating excitement and interest in younger generations.

“KNC Beauty has taken me places that I never imagined I could go—from the pages of Vogue magazine to headlining ComplexCon—and we’re just getting started,” says Crawley. “I’m really thankful for all the experiences that I’ve had.”

DIAPER DOLLARS

Glencoe’s Amy Kadens is tackling diaper insecurity through Diaper Dollars, a pilot program under her new venture MOD Collective.

It’s no secret that lower-income families face all kinds of challenges, from meeting the rent to putting food on the table. Every day can present a lack of one sort or another. And that includes diapers. According to the National Diaper Bank Network, one in three American families struggle to adequately diaper their children. It’s a dilemma that wouldn’t occur to most of us. But for Amy Kadens, a Glencoe mother of three, working to alleviate this situation has become a driving passion.

“Everyone thinks, ‘Oh it’s just a diaper.’ But it’s truly so much more,” says Kadens. “The effects of not being able to properly diaper a child are compounding and tragic. In my opinion, this is a public health crisis without a public solution. Diaper need is one of the leading causes of maternal depression. Children who don’t have enough diapers experience physical symptoms, such as rashes and infections. There is also a direct correlation between not having enough diapers and abuse and neglect. If you don’t have a sufficient supply of diapers, you cannot send your child to daycare, which automatically sets them behind from an educational standpoint. If a child cannot go to daycare, their parent likely cannot go to work and collect a paycheck for the family, which perpetuates the cycle of poverty. Exacerbating the problem, SNAP (food stamps) and WIC assistance can’t be used to purchase diapers.”

Kadens’ awareness of this pressing situation began when she co-founded Share our Spare in 2011, which provides clothing and other essentials for infants and toddlers. “We lived in the city with an infant daughter and tons of stuff in not much space,” recalls Kadens. “So, I walked down the street to the Common Pantry on Damen Avenue to ask if my items would be helpful for another family. Everyone in my orbit also had something spare to share. So, in a matter of a few weeks, we had a room full of infant and toddler supplies.”

During COVID, Share our Spare teamed up with the Greater Chicago Food Depository, and since 2020 has distributed nearly 10 million diapers to food pantries and other outlets. Now, Kadens is launching a new initiative to help get families the diapers they need—MOD Collective’s Diaper Dollars. MOD

takes its name from the initials of Marion O’Brien Donovan, who invented the precursor to the disposable diaper. Diaper Dollars provides a monthly digital cash stipend of $40 that allows individuals to purchase diapers at hundreds of retailers. The sixmonth pilot program is administered in collaboration with Family Connects, a home visiting program of the Chicago Department of Public Health.

While diaper banks and the agencies that access them do address a critical need, they don’t address the full need. “I have seen parents waiting in line for hours and when they get to the front of the line, the size of diapers they need isn’t available,” shares Kadens. “Or the mom has a little boy, and all that’s available are princess diapers. That is another reason why we’re doing the subsidy digitally, to allow people to shop where they typically shop and pay how they typically pay.”

SHERIDAN ROAD 91
Photography by Liudmila Chernetska

“After moving to the suburbs, I wasn’t as close to Share our Spare as I wanted to be, but I knew that there was still so much to be done. So many people aren’t aware of the pervasiveness of diaper insecurity. It’s a hidden symptom of poverty. I’m trying to peel back the layers and show how diaper insecurity touches on the economy, on mental health, on community,” explains Kadens.

With the recent launch of MOD Collective’s Diaper Dollars, Kadens is eagerly awaiting to assess its effectiveness. “The average cost to diaper a child is $80 a month, so we are testing to see if reducing the cost by $40 makes a difference. We will be monitoring the program with our research partner to see not only if people used the subsidy, but also if it had a positive impact—did they have enough diapers to get through the month, did it make them feel better, did they miss fewer days of work? We’re looking at it holistically to see how cash for diapers improves lives. Again, this is a pilot program. At the end of six months, we might find $40 didn’t move the needle. But I hope we will come out of this with the kind of data that will help legislators push policy forward. There is momentum right now—Illinois legislators have recently proposed a diaper stipend bill. However, there is a huge need and we are only scratching the surface. MOD Collective is here to change that.”

GRANTING PARENTHOOD

Doctor Eve Feinberg helps ease the financial strain of infertility.

When Dr. Eve Feinberg struggled to conceive a child, she gained firsthand knowledge of exactly how expensive infertility treatments could be.

“My own experiences were both humbling and eye-opening. They made me realize that if the process is this difficult for me as somebody who has the knowledge, the expertise, the training, good healthcare, and is in the field, how are my patients doing this?” says the Highland Park mother of three teens.

As a Reproductive Endocrinology and Fertility Specialist at Northwestern Medicine, Feinberg sees many of her patients struggle to pay for treatment. “They’re putting payments on credit cards, and they’re mortgaging their houses—they’re financially stressed,” she explains. “You see these amazing people who so badly want to become parents but are unable to even try because their health insurance does not provide coverage and they cannot afford treatment. They have mountains to move to get to the point where they can afford to have a chance to try. As if infertility isn’t hard enough.” In fact, infertility affects one in eight couples in the United States.

In 2013, Feinberg, along with Dr. Jennifer Hirshfeld-Cytron, launched the Chicago Coalition for Family Building. The mission of the organization is to provide both educational and financial support for individuals and couples struggling with infertility. The organization was originally launched to honor the legacy of Dr. Kevin J. Lederer, a reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist who died after battling cancer. As the organization grew to encompass nearly every fertility practice in Chicagoland, the group became the Chicago Coalition for Family Building to reflect its widespread community efforts.

The nonprofit organization hosts educational webinars and offers two different types of grants, either a financial grant or a donated services grant that might include a donated IVF cycle, donated genetic testing, or donated medications. Financial grants are typically for up to $10,000 but last year the Coalition awarded $75,000 to a family to help with the cost of using a gestational carrier.

“There are a lot of working couples who make a decent living but don’t have insurance coverage and simply cannot afford to access IVF,” explains Feinberg.

By networking with her colleagues, Feinberg recruited more than 75 percent of all IVF practices in Chicagoland to donate one cycle of IVF annually through the coalition. Since its inception, the coalition has awarded more than $2 million in grants; a generosity that has led to 74 live births.

The Chicago Coalition for Family Building is not Feinberg’s first foray into volunteerism. As a college student at Emory University, she served as the President of Volunteer Emory. Her responsibilities included making phone calls to alumni asking for

donations. “I realized that a little bit of money from a lot of people would go a long way to help a large group of people,” she says.

The organization raised enough money to bus Emory students to inner city Atlanta to teach reproductive health to high school girls. “I taught topics like hygiene, menstruation, safe sex, all of those embarrassing ones that people don’t always teach,” she explains, “It was one of my most rewarding experiences.”

Feinberg became interested in reproductive health at an unusually early age. “My mom was pregnant with my younger brother when I was 5. And I was insanely fascinated with where babies came from, not so much the sex part of it, but the reproduction part of it, the sperm, the egg, the embryo,” she recalls.

Not surprisingly, Feinberg knew as a child that she wanted to go to medical school. However, as a high school student she considered a future in theater, performing in school productions at Glenbrook North High School and attending summer theater camp in upstate New York. The stage skills Feinberg learned then have continued to serve her well. “Some of the improvisation you learn in theater, some of the empathy and communication, and some of the ability to read people and emotions are really helpful in connecting with other people as a physician.”

Feinberg credits a supportive husband, extended family, and a village of friends for helping her handle her busy life along with “incredible organizational management skills” and a healthy attitude.

“I give myself grace in understanding that I am one person and I’m not going to be the best at everything every single day but I’m always going to try my hardest. I also think about seeing the big picture, not sweating the things that are not important,” she says.

One thing is consistently important to Dr. Feinberg—the quest for parenthood. “I truly believe that people who want to become parents will become parents. There’s always a workaround in terms of treatment or alternative treatment or adoption. We can’t always fix some of the biological issues, but we can always fix the financial issues.”

EFFORTLESSLY CHIC

Like her one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces, Joie DiGiovanni is more than meets the eye.

Meeting jewelry designer Joie DiGiovanni for the first time, you wouldn’t know that behind her loveliness and poise is a list of ongoing health issues, the result of a serious car accident that happened just after she graduated from Villanova University. “I went from being an extremely healthy 21-year-old to having every sort of autoimmune disease imaginable,” DiGiovanni explains. Yet, while some people might have crumbled, DiGiovanni built something beautiful. Ultimately, it was this horrific experience that shaped her life and her career.

DiGiovanni’s medical needs meant she couldn’t work a normal desk job so, instead, she followed her love of all things fashion and started working at a clothing boutique. In her spare time, she made jewelry. “I started making some things for myself because it was therapeutic,” she says. Pretty soon, customers at the boutique were buying her jewelry right off of her.

Now, a little over a decade later, DiGiovanni’s stunning and unique designs are shipped around the world; they’re among the top-selling items on luxury e-commerce site Moda Operandi, and are sold at stores across the country, including at Ozmun Home in Highland Park. Many of DiGiovanni’s first designs featured baroque freshwater, South Sea, and Tahitian pearls, and they’re still her signature. “From when you’re a little girl to when you’re an older woman, everyone has a strand of pearls. The problem is, nobody really wears them,” she observes. “I wanted to take something that’s timeless and classic and make it unique. Baroque pearls are each unique, just like people.”

A perfectionist and self-taught gem expert, DiGiovanni typically

introduces one or two new collections every year. She currently has nearly a dozen different collections that incorporate round freshwater pearls, fine metals, intricately knotted leather, and gems in a rainbow of colors. But DiGiovanni’s process remains the same as it has since day one: “Nothing is mass-produced,” she says. Every piece is handmade and every stone is hand-set, either by DiGiovanni or by her sister. In fact, partnering with her

younger sister has been one of DiGiovanni’s greatest joys. “My sister has Asperger’s,” DiGiovanni explains. “She’s brilliant but she wouldn’t thrive in a typical work environment. Being able to employ her is amazing.” Together, they also give back to charitable organizations that benefit the autism community, as well as many other causes. “I love helping people. It’s one of the most rewarding things I do,” DiGiovanni says.

2022 was an especially noteworthy year for DiGiovanni both personally and professionally. Her barefoot-on-the-beach wedding in Mexico presented an opportunity to launch her bridal line, highlighting custom 18-karat platinum hand-hammered rings, set with flawless diamonds. The nuptials also inspired her collection for men—Guy’s, which is named for her husband.

“One of my favorite stones is Blue Tiger’s Eye because it looks black at first, only in the sun do you see the different navies that come through, so I use that and Red Tiger’s Eye in the Guy’s collection,” DiGiovanni explains.

In addition to the intricate craftsmanship and artistry of her work, DiGiovanni prides herself on the fact that everything she makes is wearable, whether for a special occasion or nothing special at all. “People are shocked when they hear I wear my jewelry to yoga but I do,” she laughs. But the focus on comfort is also a consequence of coping with her illnesses, a part of DiGiovanni’s

life that has impacted many of her designs, including her Dope Collection. “I was one of the first people in Pennsylvania to get a medical marijuana license, so I started making pot-themed jewelry,” she says, pointing to the marijuana leaf earring she’s wearing, studded with diamond-cut emeralds.

With wisdom beyond her 35 years, DiGiovanni has learned a lot about people and life. “I understand how difficult and different people’s lives are. No one’s life is perfect, and you don’t always know what they’re going through,” she says. “What I want to do is create something beautiful that makes people happy.” This was particularly true during the height of the pandemic. “That’s when I brought in a whole new set of gemstones. All sapphires, tourmalines, you name it, from chunky and bigger stones to more delicate.” She also introduced gem-encrusted baroque pearls, a fascinating and eye-catching twist on her original designs.

DiGiovanni may have grown up surfing the beaches along the Atlantic Ocean but, after moving to Highland Park two years ago to join her now-husband, she has developed a deep appreciation for Lake Michigan and life on the North Shore. DiGiovanni’s marriage also added four stepdaughters to her life, making Mother’s Day that much more meaningful for her. “Mothers deserve something special and unique,” says DiGiovanni who loves to create personalized pieces for women that incorporate their children’s birthstones. DiGiovanni’s beloved role as stepmom and her North Shore home provide new inspiration, but no matter the design or who it’s for, DiGiovanni says, “every single piece comes from my heart.”

PLASTIC SURGERY

UPDATE:

Vaser 4D Hi-Definition

Liposuction has been in existence for close to thirty years. It continues to be refined and improved. Two years ago I discussed Hi-Definition Liposculpture. Since that time I’ve performed hundreds of procedures. Results have been excellent with significant improvement over past procedures. It has become a true art form where the underlying anatomy is contoured, sculpted, and enhanced. Like every procedure, over time one realizes that there are some limitations. The single biggest limitation in achieving the desired result is the status of the overlying skin. More specifically the level of the skin’s elasticity. In the younger patient where the skin tone is better, results are more predictable and consistent. In the older patient, if there is significant laxity of skin, the procedure may be combined with skin reduction or excision. It is that middle group of patients who present the most challenge. Obviously, most patients want the best results with the least invasive method. For this group, I’m now combining Vaser Hi-Definition Liposculpture to contour and sculpt the body with a minimally invasive treatment called Renuvion.

Renuvion is a cosmetic technology combining the unique properties of the helium plasma with a proprietary form of radiofrequency energy. The trick is always to sufficiently heat up the deeper tissues to promote collagen tightening and elasticity without burning the overlying skin. Renuvion has a very shallow depth of penetration. It has a dual thermal effect where it provides unique heating with near-instantaneous tissue cooling. The delivery of energy beneath the skin and thru the helium plasma allows 360-degree energy application to all desired tissues in the subdermal space. The fibroseptal network beneath the skin can be effectively heated to promote contraction and tightening of the overlying skin. The full effect of this treatment can take up to six months to see.

So basically, tumescent fluid is injected into the area to be treated and Vaser ultrasound is introduced to emulsify the fat. Liposuction is performed if need be and the Renuvion is introduced to promote skin tightening.

To see if you are a candidate for this procedure a consultation and an exam are required. As with any surgical procedure, risks and possible complications will be discussed.

DANCING INTO A NEW DECADE: JOFFREY CEO GREG CAMERON

Greg Cameron, President and CEO of the Joffrey Ballet, sees dance and music as the essence of who we are. “We dance before we walk, and we sing before we talk. Together, we can inspire the world to create joy through dancing and singing.”

Cameron, who grew up in Westchester, Illinois, says his parents encouraged curiosity and discovery. “My role models have been and will always be my parents, my grandparents, and my Aunt Margie. In the lyrics of a Jerry Herman song, my family always encouraged me to ‘Open a new window. Open a new door. Travel a new highway ...’”

“Our garage was the neighborhood theater playhouse, where I learned the clarinet, memorized song lyrics, practiced acrobatics, and tried my hand at the visual arts. Yet, I thrived most in connecting the dots, appreciating and supporting artists rather than being an artist.”

A graduate of both Proviso West High School and Illinois State University, Cameron started as a special education major. “Following a semester abroad in Salzburg, Austria, I added art history, German, and literature to the mix and ultimately graduated with a German major and an Art History minor.”

Cameron’s first job post-college was a far cry from what he’s doing now, yet he credits this experience with building valuable skills.

“In 1980, following graduation, employment opportunities were scarce. I returned to my summer job at O’Hare Airport to clean airplanes for Republic Airlines. Being employed full-time I was required to join a union, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.”

“Post-college I wasn’t expecting to be emptying ashtrays (yes, smoking was still allowed in flight) and servicing lavatories. However, looking back, I’m grateful for the experience. I learned how a diverse team could work together under tight schedules to ensure excellence and always prioritize the customer.”

While working for Republic, Cameron began a Public Administration graduate program at the University of Illinois at Chicago. “My flexible work schedule and union salary allowed me to cover

all expenses without student loans,” he recalls.

“The final requirement of the master’s program was an internship. I connected with Janet Carl Smith, then the director of the Chicago Office of Fine Arts and the predecessor of what is now Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. Almost 40 years have passed, and we remain trusted friends and devoted Chicagoans committed to uplifting the arts community.”

The internship was a meaningful career kick-start connecting Cameron with arts leaders across disciplines. Leadership roles at the Museum of Contemporary Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, and WTTW/WFMT led to his 2013 appointment as the Joffrey’s Executive Director. In 2022, Cameron was named as the Joffrey’s President and CEO.

“Along with Ashley B. Wheater MBE, Joffrey’s Mary B. Galvin Artistic Director, and Anne Kaplan, Joffrey’s Board Chair, we have created a pathway together for Joffrey’s perpetual growth and transformation. We do so by honoring Robert Joffrey’s 1956 founding vision each day. The work is fulfilling, engaging, and inspiring, but most importantly, is making Chicago and the world a better place.”

“I am an artist at connecting dots and bringing people together toward a greater goal. My preferred discipline is kindness,” observes Cameron. Cameron has used this artistry to forge collaborations with organizations like the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Los Angeles Opera, and the Miami City Ballet and to lead the Joffrey during a period of record-breaking ticket sales.

To celebrate Cameron’s decade of extraordinary vision and leadership, the Joffrey will host not one, but two events. On June 23, the Joffrey will first host a formal fashion forward surrealist-themed gala, complete with Joffrey Company artists, at Chicago’s Old Post Office. On June 25, “The Joffrey Ballet’s Joffrey for All Celebration” featuring performances from Joffrey’s community engagement programs, the Joffrey Academy of Dance, and the Joffrey Company Artists will take place at Millennium Park’s Pritzker Pavilion and is free of charge as a gift to the people of Chicago.
