THIS MONTH I WILL BE READING Martin William’s The King is Dead, Long Live the King

VISITING Antelope Canyon in Arizona WISHING Chloé and Billy a lifetime of happiness

elcome to November, a month of gratitude and the beginning of the holiday season. Rock stars, winemakers, and luxury designers—one might think such powerhouses were solely found in Los Angeles and New York City. The North Shore, however, is home to all three. Our first feature takes you behind the scenes of the magical wedding of Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan and Maison Atia designer Chloé Mendel. When planning their wedding, the couple intentionally chose to highlight superlative, local creative talents—Highland Park native Graziela Kaufman designed the wedding rings, Wilmette’s Martha Nippert created the invitations, program, and all paper goods, and Chloé chose Sheridan Road to cover the coveted event along with Vogue and People. At this intimate wedding, family also played an important and unique role as Chloé’s dad, famed designer Gilles Mendel, designed both Chloé and Billy’s wedding attire while their two children stole the show as wedding attendants. Swapping vows for vines, our next feature introduces Matt Bonanno of BonAnno Vintners. His high-quality wines would complement any celebration from nuptials to fireside dinners. Our final feature showcases Elizabeth Krueger Design and Elizabeth’s recent collaboration—Opame Collective. The collective is an assemblage of furniture, art, accessories, and textiles where each element is rooted in the vibration of materials, justice of proportions, and a wealth of craftsmanship. Looking for the perfect gift for hostess or holiday? This issue’s gift guides are sure to have a little something for all those on your list. In Shore vs. City we hear the city and shore faves of Instagram sensation Olivia Metzger of @livviejane. Exchanging screens for film, Fabián Cerón shares his creative inspiration in Art &

Artist. Leaving the darkroom for a storefront, Trending introduces the fabulous Ramsey Prince of Maison du Prince. Moving from home décor to cozy ambiance, Dinner Date visits an Evanston favorite—LeTour while First Class books a ticket to a beachfront ultra-luxury villa situated on Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast. Trading the rainforest for a North Shore suburb, Home Tour shines a light on an architectural gem redesigned by Michael Hershenson. We close the November issue with an ideal choice for the history lover on your gift list: Martin Williams’ new book The King is Dead, Long Live the King, which highlights a remarkable period of tension and transition—the swansong of Edwardian England. Happy holidays and happy shopping.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary, the U.S. Ski Team’s Jesse Diggins—the greatest American cross-country skier of all time with three Olympic medals—joins as a special guest racer. The Birkie is patterned after the Norwegian Birkebeiner Rennet that dates back to 1932. The race recreates a historic Norwegian event when in 1206, two warrior soldiers, called “Birkebeiners” because of the birch-bark leggings they wore, skied infant Prince Haakon to safety during the Norwegian Civil War. Prince Haakon subsequently became the King of Norway, and the Birkebeiner soldiers became a Norwegian symbol of courage, perseverance, and character in the face of adversity. The first American race took place in northern Wisconsin in 1973. Today, the Birkie provides year-round, active lifestyle events for thousands of adventurous spirits of all ages and abilities. Celebrate the warrior within and sign up for a race in February 2024. For more information, visit birkie.com.

Step Four of the STRATEGIC DIVORCE PROCESS™ Maintenance.

WORDS BY MICHONE RIEWER / PHOTOGRAPHY BY KATRINA WITTKAMP / STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA

I

believe knowledge of the divorce process provides strength and peace of mind to those facing an often complicated and difficult time. This goal of education inspired me to write The Strategic Divorce Process™. My book breaks divorce into five distinct steps when children are involved and two distinct steps when no children are involved. These steps are: 1. Making Decisions for Your Children; 2. Visitation; 3. Child Support; 4. Maintenance; and 5. Division of Marital Assets and Debts. In this month’s column, we will examine a step that occurs in all divorces—maintenance. Sometimes called alimony or spousal support, maintenance is supplemental income paid from one spouse to the other after their divorce. Simply put, the purpose of this income is to allow both spouses to live the same lifestyle that they were accustomed to during their marriage. Of course, this simplistic view isn’t entirely realistic. When two people divorce, even though their combined income will likely stay the same, their expenses often nearly double as there are two separate households with separate rent or mortgages, utility bills, and other costs. When determining who will pay maintenance, the primary factor is income. The lower wage earner will always be the one to receive spousal support. Any and all reliable sources of money, not necessarily just employment, should be identified and used in the calculation. This can include regular family gifts, investments that have regular returns, perks from employment, or cash from side projects. A common misconception about maintenance is that it is at the court’s discretion. While this was the case until 2016, courts must now use a statutory formula. Currently, annual maintenance paid equals 33 percent of the higher wager earner’s net income minus 25 percent of the lower wage earner’s net income. There are some exceptions to this equation. First, the amount of money the lower wage earner receives cannot exceed more than 40 percent of the couple’s combined net income. If the amount does exceed it, 40 percent of the combined net income is used as a cap. Additionally, should the couple’s combined gross income be in excess of $500,000 annually, any maintenance awarded on income in excess of $500,000 can be calculated differently, at the judge’s discretion. For spouses who do not have their own income, such as a stay-at-home parent, an imputed income is often entered into the equation to represent their earning potential. This adjustment reduces the maintenance obligation for the higher earner. While temporary maintenance may begin during the divorce, standard maintenance payments begin monthly once the divorce is completed but, in most cases, they do not go on indefinitely. How long maintenance is paid is determined by a formula. In Illinois, maintenance lasts a percentage of the time the couple was married, with the percentage getting larger the longer the marriage lasted.

Michone Riewer

For example, if the couple was married for less than 5 years, the maintenance period is 20 percent of the length of the marriage. If the couple was married between 10 and 11 years, the maintenance period is 44 percent of the length of the marriage, and for couples married 15 to 16 years, the maintenance period is 64 percent of the length of the marriage. If the couple was married for more than 20 years, the court will order maintenance for a period of time that is either equal to the length of the marriage or indefinitely. While the amount and length of maintenance is determined by a formula, a different structure can be negotiated. One spouse may agree to a higher amount of maintenance to be paid over less time, or one spouse may waive maintenance entirely for a larger share of the marital estate. Generally speaking, maintenance, like child support, is fairly straightforward. The standard maintenance equation will drive the discussion, helping to avoid any contention or acrimony. If the parties prefer to bargain or negotiate, the division of the marital estate will be at the center of the negotiations. t’s not easy to define what makes some artworks resonate and others catch nary a glance. You could hang 100 relatively similar pieces on a wall, and a small fraction of those works—perhaps just one—would draw more people than the others. There’s an ineffable quality that makes them magnetic. It’s a “you know it when you see it” thing. According to Richard Norton Gallery Director Susan Klein, Fabián Cerón’s cameraless photography has this quality, and it’s one of the reasons why the 27-year-old Chicago-based artist is represented by the esteemed gallery. I met Cerón on a recent September afternoon at the gallery, where he also serves as Director of Contemporary Art, a new role where he’s responsible for finding living artists to be shown alongside Chicago masters like Albert Krehbiel, Francis Chapin, and

Karl Buehr. The walls brim with eye-grabbing paintings, sketches, and tiny wooden pieces of furniture from the location’s original incarnation as an antique shop. We take our seats at a small public sitting area in the back of the gallery, surrounded by five of Cerón’s deconstructed photography works. The abstract pieces are in varying sizes, and each is quite different from the other. “I think it’s kind of a cool concept when you get a box of photo papers and it reads ‘black and white ... use in a darkroom under X conditions,’” Cerón says. “There’s these sort of guidelines for how to use it, but there’s actually more to it. There’s more to discover from this paper. Just because it says black and white doesn’t mean solely black and white. So, I found that this relationship I’ve built with the process ... I’m examining the paper, discovering what else it has to offer, peeling the layers.”

Cerón picks up Red Metropolis, #1, a 10” x 8” silver gelatin print. It looks nothing like a photograph, more an artifact than an image. The paper is thick and tactile looking, dark and silvery upon a bright red background. “This is a collage,” he says, surveying. “That red you see beneath the paper is a gel. It’s the filter that you use to slide into the enlarger in a darkroom. There are different shades of this red, and each shade gives you a different contrast in the image when you print it.” He shifts focus to a different part of the piece: “There’s a layer of resin of the gelatin silver on top which captures the light. The way I was able to get this metallic-looking effect was by dripping a [cleaning] chemical little by little onto the paper.” To finish it off, Cerón burned the paper, which created a bubbling effect. For Cerón’s other works, he employed different tactics. Some are based on following his instincts and others are grounded in reading old textbooks and guides. For Besos Oscuros, he planted kisses on the photo paper, which appear within the outline of an abstract figure. For Noche Estrellada, which gives the impression of infinitesimal stars moving across a crystal-clear sky, he used a sandpaper block to scratch and blemish the photographic surface. For his self-portrait, he rubbed Vaseline on his face and then rolled the photo paper around it so that certain parts of the surface would be protected from chemical exposure. The result looks both primitive and regal. All of the works are mysterious and beg to be decoded.

“[It’s] abstract expressionist, because they’re not representational. They’re very emotional,” he says. And while he’s clearly tapping into the abstract expressionist movement, Cerón also sees himself as part of a Chicago continuum that started in the late ‘30s with the New Bauhaus movement founded by László Moholy-Nagy. “I’m very much influenced by László and his principles of light. I didn’t realize how big of an impact early 20th-century Chicago would have on my work,” Cerón says. “It wasn’t until I got here and started to learn about New Bauhaus. I’m just riding the next wave, remixing what the artists did before me.” It’s an instinct that comes naturally. Cerón was born in California, where his parents, both of Mexican heritage, had met and were making a living selling houses. His dad was a skateboarder, and he dreamt of opening a skate park and cafe on the beach in Mexico. But Cerón’s mom thought better of it and suggested they find a place to open a restaurant in the States. They settled on a location in central Wisconsin and began a lifelong journey as restaurateurs. As a young kid growing up, there was always cooking in the house and lots of artwork and music, so Cerón was exposed early and often to the mixing (and remixing) that’s inherent to all those art forms. Both of his parents were also comfortable behind the camera. His mom was a photographer, and his dad was fond of filming moments in their young family’s life. “They were always taking us to museums and galleries. We traveled extensively together as a family at a young age. That’s probably where it all started,” recalls Cerón.

Cerón further explored art in high school and found a path for himself in the photography program at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, where his unique take on camera-less photography (as it sounds, exposing film directly in the darkroom without ever passing it through a camera) was born. Studying under Joseph Mougel, Lindsey Lochman, and Allen Morris, he began experimenting—changing chemical mixtures, interacting with the film, burning and cutting the media. “When photography started it was chemists in lab suits trying to figure out how to capture light,” he says. “It wasn’t an art thing yet. But then I started wondering what it would be like to be one of those chemists in that lab coat trying to figure out the chemical process. What is photography? How do you do it? I was also putting it into the context of contemporary art. So I was like, what if a painter and a chemist came together and made work?” These questions became the root of Cerón’s motivation, leading him through school, into shows, into a form of work that’s uniquely his own, and to this moment in time. It’s clear already, at this early point in his career, that Cerón is in command of his trajectory. And now there are new questions to answer, which seem set to move the young artist (who also, it should be noted, performs as DJ Brilla) to new and different creative places. “I’ve gotten into a lot of graphic designing. I’m working on merch, some streetwear. I do a bit of painting, some drawing.” He seems a little amazed by it all. “This is just what you do, right? It’s live and breathe art. A dream come true.” Cerón’s work has been shown at Richard Norton Gallery, EXPO Chicago, the 40th Annual SECURA Fine Arts Juried Exhibition at the Trout Museum of Art in Appleton, Wisconsin, and he had his first public solo exhibition, Decoction, at the Refraction Gallery at UW-Milwaukee in 2022.

ituated in the center of downtown Evanston, LeTour is a jewel in the crown of North Shore dining options. A collaboration between longtime Evanston resident and restaurateur Amy Morton and James Beard Award-winning chef Debbie Gold, the brasserie shifts from the steak focus of Morton’s restaurant-family legacy to a lighter, Moroccan-accented menu in an effervescent atmosphere. LeTour, “the circle” in French, is physically, and metaphorically just that. Located in the rotunda of a 1960s former bank building at 625 Davis Street, the curvaceous space represents a full circle in Morton and Gold’s partnership, bringing them back to the shared love for Mediterranean and French cuisine that first connected them 30 years ago. Prior to winning a James Beard Award as Best Midwest Chef for her work at The American in Kansas City, Gold spent years cooking in France, which led to helming the kitchens at Mirador, Morton’s first restaurant. The two came back together at Found

after Gold’s Tied House closed due to the pandemic. When they learned that Found’s lease would not be renewed, the duo began realizing the new endeavor that would become LeTour. Fine but not too fancy, the food is approachable, with a something-for-everyone slant that shifts seasonally. With Gold just back from a trip to Morocco, that means new dishes like Lamb Mechoui (roasted lamb shoulder with cumin and salt), pomegranate and walnut roasted beets, and an anise/saffron couscous soup will be making appearances soon. The wine list is predominantly French with signature cocktails such as Deb’s Darling (Giffard Crème de Pêche, and French sparkling wine) and the Marrakesh (sparkling rosé, Bigallet China-China bittersweet orange liqueur, Dolin sweet vermouth, citrus peel, and rosemary). If feeling swell with holiday cheer, you could begin dinner with the extravagant Les Fruits de Mer platter filled with oysters on the half shell, tiger prawn, diver scallop, lobster tail, and snow crab, or one of three caviar options served with crème fraîche and

toast points. But we chose to restrain our evening’s start to the delicately saline East Coast oysters with their classic accompaniments—mignonette, lemon, and Tabasco. Our appetizer order included two more highlights. First, Gold’s rosy schmear of Madeira and white wine-enriched duck liver mousse with Publican Bread’s oven-crackled sourdough. Second, a tender plinth of house-made focaccia underlaid with prettily piped chèvre and topped with sundried tomato tapenade and a delicate overlay of microgreens. Both made for a well-balanced and flavorful segue to our mains. On an earlier visit, we had savored two dishes epitomizing classic French perfection—Gold’s Steak Frîtes, a sliced bavette strip steak with red wine demi-glace and hand-cut thin and crispy fries and her skate wing, bathed in brown butter, with a scattering of almonds, capers, and roast cauliflower florets. So tonight, we turned our focus to “Les Mains,” three Morocco-influenced specialties—Tagine of Chicken, Vegetable Couscous, and Lamb Couscous. Each was golden with the yellows of saffron, ginger, turmeric, and cumin but the vegetable version was our surprise favorite. Tender roast fennel, onion, and golden and red beets came mounded with chickpeas and raisins in the fragrant semolina, topped with a frizzle of fennel fronds. The chicken tagine, LeTour’s best-selling entrée, featured braised breast, leg, and thigh meat with Castelvetrano olives,

apricot, preserved lemon, and couscous. The lamb rendition, the heartiest of the three, enjoyed an added depth of flavor from little rounds of merguez, an earthy, harissa-spiked lamb sausage, that was included with the pieces of lamb shoulder. LeTour desserts, also created by Gold, range from a Basque “Burnt” Cheesecake with mixed berries and vanilla sauce, to a brandied-cherry bittersweet chocolate mousse, to our favorite choice, the Mille Feuille or “1000 Layers.” With little poufs of vanilla mousseline between the titular crispy pastry sheets, the fanciful stack waits to be cracked into shards and spooned up with the cream. You may nudge your dining partner for a little more than your share. An unusual and unexpected pleasure punctuated the end of our meal: Persian tea service. Steeped upon order and then served tableside from a tall silver teapot, the mint tea is poured from a great height by your practiced server, aerating the tea, which you are then invited to sugar and sip from decorative glasses. While we sipped, we admired the tangerine walls full of pop art that gave credence to our seating section’s Warhol Room moniker. As in her other restaurants, Morton has designed the space to include areas with different looks, levels of intimacy, and ambiance. Tables curve along south-facing windows for cozy tête-à-têtes, banquettes face the bar for animated evenings, a large private dining room suits celebratory occasions while the outdoor firepit seating area is an inviting spot from which to watch the bustle of Evanston’s Fountain Square. The night we visited, the room filled with a mix of diners: a mother-daughter group after a shopping expedition; Northwestern college couples on date night; and next to us, a reunion of elderly chums. Altogether? Lovely circles of friends. LeTour is open for brunch/lunch on Friday from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. and Saturday to Sunday from 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and dinner on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday from 4:30 – 9:00 p.m., Friday from 4:30 – 10 p.m., Saturday from 5 – 10 p.m., and Sunday from 5 – 8:30 p.m. For more information, visit letourevanston.com.

Villa Avellana

CON MUCHO GUSTO Visit Costa Rica’s Villa Avellana for an ultra-luxurious vacation where an exceptional staff curates a relaxing respite with a dash of adventure.

WORDS BY DUSTIN O’REGAN

estled amidst Costa Rica’s lush tropical landscape and the Papagayo Peninsula’s black beaches is the Villa Avellana. The privately owned villa is buy-out only and is designed for multi-generational families, wellness retreats, or fun-filled vacations with friends. The property perfectly combines the service, quality, and scale of a boutique hotel with the intimacy of a single-family home. Arriving at Liberia Guanacaste airport, we were greeted by Villa Avellana’s Guest Experience Manager Sergio Jaen who whisked us off in a brand-new SUV. After a scenic 45-minute drive, we entered the Papagayo Peninsula via a gorgeous gate bookended by three immense gleaming statues and a dramatic corridor of palms. As we drove along a curving road, howler monkeys greeted us from the trees and coatis nodded “hello” as they searched for hidden terrestrial treasures. Fun fact: Costa Rica is home to approximately half a million species, about 5 percent of the estimated species on Earth.

After a second gate granted us access to the Prieta Estates gated community, we found Villa Avellana sitting at the end of a long, secluded cul-de-sac on 3 acres of beachfront. General Manager Thomas Freitag welcomed us into the newly built 10-bedroom, 33,000-square-foot, fully staffed villa, a space he noted as “one to be shared by loved ones creating treasured memories.” The winner of the International Property Award’s “Best Architecture Single Residence Americas 2022-2023,” the villa is stunning to behold. Ascending the grand staircase, you are greeted by an astonishing view of the jungle and ocean through floor-toceiling glass walls and doors. A vast yet inviting space contains a kitchen, indoor eating area, and the main living room. The villa’s game room is designed for fun while the garden-view bedrooms with outdoor showers and beautiful hillside views are utterly relaxing. Second-floor, ocean-view bedrooms feature gorgeous marble bathrooms and expansive terraces. Bedtime is an otherworldly experience as Villa Avellana uses 400 thread count cotton hemstitch sheets from the Costa Rican bedding company, Katé.

The Costa Rican design firm SENS carefully selected the villa’s color palette to reflect the coastal charm and tropical allure of Papagayo. Shades of blue, ranging from deep navy to serene aquamarine, create a sense of calm and tranquility while various shades of green are reminiscent of the vibrant jungle foliage. Natural textures and materials, such as wood and stone, enhance the organic feel of the spaces while an abundant inclusion of works from local artisans lends cultural authenticity. Located just outside the main villa is the two-story yoga pavilion built of gleaming teak. On the other end of the villa and outside the main building is a huge outdoor living area with kitchens, eating areas, pools, pool deck, and a bar, which is manned by an onsite mixologist.

FOOD Outdoor dining is an essential part of the Costa Rican experience, and the villa offers various areas where groups of all sizes can savor a delightful, al fresco meal. Whether served as plated courses or buffet style, all meals are prepared with the freshest locally grown ingredients and Executive Chef David Moya caters to all dietary preferences. Each morning, I eagerly awaited the “Menu of the Day.” Breakfasts offered the option of a classic Costa Rican dish (alternating daily) and/or a farm fresh egg station. In addition, there was a tempting display of pressed juices (my favorite was the “Green Juice” made of pineapple, cucumber, kale, celery, ginger, and peppermint), homemade bread and pastries, yogurts, fruit, and other goodies.

ACTIVITIES Luckily Costa Rica is a vacationer’s playground with myriad activities to help burn off those delicious calories. Villa guests have exclusive access to all the Peninsula’s offerings, including golf, tennis, private beach clubs, tours, wilderness trails, beautiful beaches, and a two-story fitness facility. Chauffeured SUVs, a fleet of golf carts, and a 2023 Boston Whaler yacht transport guests to and from a multitude of adventures. One morning we zipped over to a beach favored by whitefaced monkeys for an early morning paddle board excursion with Thomas, the villa’s general manager. As we glided along, Thomas pointed out different varieties of trees in the “floating” forest. Directing our gaze beneath the water, we saw an assortment of wildlife including rays and schools of fish. Arriving back at the White-faced capuchin monkey beach we were welcomed by a band of white-faced monkeys who, with infants in tow, leaped, climbed, and swung to our For one lunch, Chef Mona presented an endless array of choic- absolute delight. yacht. Captain expertly maneuvered our vessel, pointing out all the best sights and then stopping so we could partake in a bit of snorkeling and cave exploration. Upon returning, we met in the spacious living room for a chocolate-making class with the owner of a cacao farm. We journeyed through the chocolate-making process from start to finish—we learned how cacao is pollinated, harvested, and how its need for excessive amounts of water means that it flourishes in the rainforest. We opened our own pod to find the fleshy white “seeds” that hold the cacao nubs. We roasted the nubs, removed the husks, and finally ground them into a delicious chocolate paste. Our host allowed us to add milk powder, sugar, and nuts but reminded us that in its pure form, chocolate is the most nutritious food in the world. It is high in antioxidants, magnesium, and rich in flavanols which help protect cells from inflammation, improve brain function, and boost immune health. On another glorious morning, we headed off for the Private Palmares Aerial Adventure where we zipped through the jungle tethered to a steel cable and followed that thrill by tackling a ropes challenge course. I was quite proud of myself on the ropes course—my trick is speed. If you go too slow, it’s harder to keep your balance as you sway high above the jungle floor. Our last challenge of the day was a three-story free fall. Luckily, the cable attached to our harness slowed just before our feet hit the ground. To toast our athletic abilities and quench our thirst, our guide

gathered some coconuts, pulled out a machete, and, with a few “taps” across their tops, produced the sweetest of treats. Located on the second floor of the yoga pavilion is a little slice of heaven Villa Avellana refers to as the “Wellness Studio.” My open-air hot stone massage was one of the top spa experiences of my many travels. The breeze, essential oils, toasty stones, masseuse’s expertise, and the ocean’s orchestra elevated the experience from pleasant to glorious. STAFF The villa and its location’s beauty are an enormous draw for the discerning traveler but what truly makes Villa Avellana unforgettable is the team in front of and behind the scenes. With Thomas at the helm as general manager and a personal concierge team, logistics are easily juggled and activities and itineraries are effortlessly planned. All things are possible at all times. If it’s a rainy afternoon when the yacht excursion is planned, the staff replaces boating with spa appointments or chocolate making. No ask is too big or too small for this talented team who replies “con mucho gusto” to every request. Looking for ultra-luxurious accommodations, world-class cuisine, and stress-free, adventurous itineraries planned by detail-oriented staff ? Villa Avellana is waiting (and so are the monkeys). estled in a tree-lined stretch of Sheridan Road sits a unique contemporary home that, at first glance, seems brand new. In fact, this home is 40 years old but recent renovations have breathed new life into this aesthetic marvel. “It’s warm-contemporary,” says Michael Hershenson. “And the warmth part is very important.” Hershenson, the principal architect at North Shore-based Michael Hershenson Architects, led the remodel. With more than 33 years in the industry, Hershenson finds great joy in creating

modern homes for his clients that radiate warmth and are infused with livability. The original 6,700 square-foot house, already a rare contemporary gem, was designed by legendary Chicago architect James Nagle. Completed in 1983, the home’s eccentric design perfectly fit the narrow site, a testament to Nagle’s avant-garde style. Hershenson observes, “Mr. Nagle’s design is a pinwheel shape that divides the site into three distinct public areas: the drive court, the pool terrace, and the natural ravine area. Each narrow finger of the pinwheel has big expanses of glass, allowing great views of the surrounding site.” The owners, Dr. Michael and Brooke Kauf, were drawn by the home’s magnificent views but realized the house itself needed a refresh that would better align it with their 21st-century lifestyle. One challenge for Hershenson was to maintain the home’s rare beauty and integrity while upgrading the original, white-painted brick and creating a more welcoming façade.

“To make the home more inviting, we reclad it in three materials: stucco, Ipe wood, and stone tile,” he describes. “We also designed an Ipe pergola to announce the front entrance and added windows at the entry from the first-floor study.” “To make the building lighter, we clad the second floor in stucco, and projected it out from the first floor, so that the second floor appears to float. The Ipe wood and stucco combine to create a warm and expansive design.” The interior of the home was also reconsidered, transforming it from design-centric to human-centric. “My staff probably thinks I’m crazy but I always insist that we put a person in every drawing so we can see the scale of these spaces,” Hershenson shares. “We have to imagine ourselves in the space to make sure it will be comfortable. These houses are sculptures, but they’re also sculptures you’re walking through.” One of the home’s original features was a distinct zig-zag design element. For functionality, Hershenson and his team

straightened out the zig-zag hallway on the second floor that carved out room for additional bedrooms, baths, and laundry rooms, all without doing any formal additions. “One of the house’s coolest elements was a brick wall that extended from the front yard in a straight line, all the way to the back of the structure. That was one of the fun elements Nagle created,” Hershenson says, “but we wanted to highlight it a bit more with warm material, so we covered it with Ipe wood.” “It’s a lot of fun to follow this Ipe-covered brick wall from the north side, past the pool, cladding the garage, then into the kitchen, through the living room, and back out to where the circular fireplace is.” “The property also had a four-car garage, but we made that northernmost space into a guest room, then added a hallway from the main house along the east side to the guest room. We were able to punch in windows from the guest bedroom to the pool and add windows in that hallway overlooking the pool.” The backyard was also reimagined with entertainment in mind; a hot tub, sunken fire pit with seating, a grill area, and a pergola were all added. Stunning landscaping by Ruffalo Inc. accentuates the original views the Kaufs found so inviting. “I can’t give enough credit to the Kauf family,” he adds. “They were very involved. They selected all the materials, and we worked together in three dimensions on the design of every bathroom and every soffit. They are interested in good design. So, it was very satisfying.” For more information about Michael Hershenson Architects, visit mhadesign.com.

ave you ever seen two galaxies in love? At first, there is flirting from a distance but the attraction grows stronger as the galaxies edge closer. They are drawn to each other, as each extends their arms toward the other. They may pass each other, circling around in a lovers’ dance, but inevitably their fate is to be together. Slowly, they touch, wrap themselves around each other, and in the end, merge into one. Then, brilliance is born in the shape of a million new stars. On Sept 16, 2023, the marriage of Billy Corgan and Chloé Mendel united two creative galaxies, one of music and one of design. Billy is the frontman of the groundbreaking band Smashing Pumpkins, while Chloé is the force behind the luxury sustainable brand Maison Atia. Rather than creating new points of light, their wedding inspired three brilliant creative collaborations that an astronomer might dub “Rings of Fire,” “Silvery Star,” and “Gossamer Gown.”

Wedding and afterparty dresses by House of Gilles

The “Gossamer Gown” collaboration was one born from family rather than local connections. Chloé worked closely with her father, the famed designer Gilles Mendel, on the design of her stunning, couture wedding gown. A Parisian descendent of five generations of furriers, Gilles moved to New York City in the early 1980s and established J. Mendel, which quickly became the label of choice for those seeking to make the most glamorous of entrances. As a young girl, Chloé would visit her father’s studio after school and spend time coloring his sketches. At 15 years old, she began coming to her father’s studio to learn aspects of craftwork. A laudatory 2014 New York Times profile of her father describes Chloé calmly cutting material as pre-show chaos swirls around her. In a moving wedding toast, Gilles described his daughter as uniquely gifted to navigate many worlds because she grew up in both his world, a French one full of Jewish history, and in her mother Jenny’s world, a Chinese household surrounded by an older sister and five younger brothers. Gilles also expressed his delight that Chloé had found in Billy, a life partner whose discipline and singular focus were balanced by a soulful nature and a big heart. Gilles describes the wedding gown as an ode to “a sight Chloé has cherished from her bedroom window during countless dawns, the view of the morning mist hovering over Lake Michigan.” The mist inspired the gown’s divine color—a delicate, cloudy grey hue. Gilles worked with the celebrated French lace company Solstiss SHERIDAN ROAD 86

for nearly eight months to create a sheer Chantilly lace infused with metallic threads that “mimics the enchanting essence of mist and dancing dew.” This ethereal beauty was juxtaposed with a dynamic, Art Deco-esque zig-zag pattern on the gown’s corset. Inspired by New York City’s Chrysler Building, her hometown’s most iconic building, the glinting pattern both accentuated Chloé’s delicate waist and paid homage to her inner strength. The gown’s regal yet dreamy lines perfectly captured Chloé’s spirit; one that Billy described in his heartfelt wedding vows as “celestial grace.” Gilles describes the moment when he walked his daughter toward Billy, who was awaiting her under the rose-laden chuppah with the officiant, Highland Park’s Mayor Nancy Rotering, Billy’s tennis partner, friend, and godmother to Billy and Chloé’s daughter, Philomena Clementine, and “partner in crime” to their son,

Augustus Juppiter, both of whom were also standing alongside their father, as “the experience of a lifetime, a profound culmination of love, artistry, and a deep bond between a father and his daughter. It will be etched into my heart forever,” Gilles recalls. Billy’s columnar black tuxedo, the silk lining of which was adorned with a drawing Billy had made of his family, and Chloé’s afterparty dress were also designed by Gilles. Accented with playfully embroidered lace, the dove white afterparty sheath dress was perfect for swaying to the music of Chicago jazz band Joel Paterson & Friends during dinner and enjoying a post-dinner set by famed saxophonist Frank Catalano, David Bowie’s pianist Mike Garson, and Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin; a set highlighted by her husband singing a cover of George Gershwin’s “Summertime” and the Smashing Pumpkins classic “Tonight, Tonight.”

B The process of designing the three garments, a deeply satisfying one, inspired Gilles to open the House of Gilles, a bright new star on the haute couture scene. The eponymous atelier will offer the rare opportunity to work closely with the master designer himself. “I am thrilled to offer a very personal, tailored experience where our clientele’s dreams and desires come to life in every stitch,” shares Gilles. When galaxies merge in space, the consequences are spectacular. Shock waves stretching millions of light years echo through space; waves of stars are ignited changing the universe forever. The terrestrial union of Billy and Chloé’s creative galaxies created artistic collaborations infused with love and beauty that are as captivating and enduring as the Milky Way. illy Corgan and his Smashing Pumpkins bandmates had wondered how to mark the 30th anniversary of the release of their platinum album Siamese Dream. Then, about three weeks before his wedding to Chloé Mendel, it occurred to Corgan that staging a show at his and Mendel’s teahouse, Madame ZuZu’s, would be an opportunity to celebrate the anniversary of the landmark album alongside not only the band’s fans but also with family and friends in town for the nuptials. Corgan says Mendel, amid all the wedding planning, graciously agreed to plan the show and work with Tower Records to arrange for a pop-up store at ZuZu’s. The show was a tribute to a raucous moment of rock n’ roll history: on July 27, 1993, the band’s midnight performance at Tower Records in Chicago drew nearly 3,000 fans forcing the police to shut down the street outside the store. Despite the last-minute planning, the show went off without a hitch, and Corgan says he was pleased with the result. “The opportunity to put the whole thing together certainly was unique,” says Corgan. “We were very, very happy with it and it felt right that we did something. The people around me who had been skeptical said it turned out to be pretty special.” Corgan says he may capture the show on vinyl and sell it at ZuZu’s record shop. While it made a hectic weekend even more so, it was all worth the effort. “Honestly, it was just a magical weekend getting married to the love of my life and going out with the band,” Corgan says. “It’s a pretty wild journey and doing it all in one weekend made it even more crazy.”

lenty of us stumbled through job after job before we settled on a career. It was almost a rite of passage, one of the last steps (along with home ownership and parenthood) in becoming a “real adult.” But some folks know early on what they want to spend their lives doing. Count vintner Matt Bonanno among them. Bonanno—who lives in Napa Valley vineyard partners Kenilworth with his wife, Kristen, and their daughters Eva and Siena—grew up in Ohio, where for two generations, his family had been in the wine business. “My grandfather began importing wine from Italy in the ’60s, my father continued the business, and I knew at an early age that I wanted to follow in their footsteps.” In 1994, still in college, Bonanno visited Napa Valley with his father, where they met with renowned grower and winemaker Dick Steltzner, who had helped any number of individuals—including Al Brounstein of Diamond Creek Vineyard and Bernard Portet of Clos du Val—get their operations rolling. Over lunch at Mustard’s Grill in Yountville, a seed was planted: “I realized then,” says Bonanno, “that I wanted to make wine in California.” Fall wine pairing While his friends spent their summer Matthew Fritz Pinot Noir internships in offices, Bonanno got his hands dirty in the vineyards of Italy. “It was all about immersing myself in wine.” When he wasn’t in the fields, he traveled around, tasting wines from local wineries and wine shops, comparing wine styles within and across regions. After college, he took a job in Chicago with the wholesale company Union Beverage before heading West to work the harvest and help in the winery at Clos du Val, the Napa Valley vineyard established by Bordeaux-bred Napa Valley vineyard partners Portet in 1971.

After building contacts with grape growers and distributors, Bonanno felt he was ready to launch out on his own. Sensing the need for a quality wine in a contemporary style geared toward young consumers at an affordable price, he founded Bonanno Vintners in 2004 (bonannowine.com). In 2009, Bonanno teamed up with winemaker Fritz Stuhlmuller, whose parents had been growing chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, and zinfandel grapes in the Alexander Valley since the 1980s. The two began to produce wine under the Matthew Fritz label; in 2019, he purchased Fritz’s share of the business and folded it into Bonanno. Bonanno Vintners’ very first release (under the BonAnno label, meaning “good year” in Italian) was a cabernet sauvignon made from Napa Valley grapes. While still the backbone of his business, Bonanno has expanded his portfolio. “I made my first vintage of chardonnay in 2012 with grapes from Carneros and I am currently releasing a Black Label cabernet sauvignon from the Alexander Valley,” notes Bonanno. “This wine is just being released and is really targeting the restaurant ‘wine by the glass’ program. Napa Valley prices keep going up and up and are being priced out of these programs in many restaurants. My goal with Black Label is to keep BonAnno accessible through my wine in the glass pours.” (BonAnno wines are served in a number of restaurants across the North Shore, including Pomeroy in Winnetka, Sophia Steak in Wilmette and Lake Forest, Le Colonial in Lake Forest, Fred’s Garage in Winnetka, Great Coast in Kenilworth, Frank and Betsie’s in Glencoe, NaKorn in Evanston, and the Wildfire Restaurants). The wine business, notes Bonanno, is dominated by four or five producers, with Gallo being king of the hill. “They have

been gobbling up the competition forever, but especially so over the last year,” says Bonanno. “So we are in a very competitive marketplace. And after COVID, wine consumption is trending downward. But I see this as an opportunity, because we are making authentic wine and most restaurants don’t want to serve wine that is mass-produced or that has saturated the retail outlets.” While Bonanno admits that it’s tough going head-to-head with the big companies, for someone who grew up in an Italian family, where good food and wine were as essential as air, he’s up to the challenge. “Although it’s really competitive, I feel very fortunate that I love what I do and that I get to work with such good people. I’ve been in this business for almost 30 years and those relationships run deep—my clients are fantastic and loyal. We really support each other.” We can all drink to that. Saluti! ome people just know how to dress. Others are great at making a home look picture-perfect. But great style, whether in fashion or decor, doesn’t usually spring forth full blown. Even raw talent needs to be nurtured, to be shaped and directed. When Elizabeth Krueger decided in her final year studying communications and marketing at DePaul University that what really interested her was design, she knew she had to get some solid training. “Because I come from a family of builders, I understood that if I was going to be taken seriously as a designer, then I at least needed to gather some technical skill.”

Krueger, whose eponymous interior design firm has executed projects around the country, from Lake Forest to Sarasota, enrolled at the Harrington College of Design and interned at Holly Hunt, the legendary furniture showroom in the Merchandise Mart. She later upped her game with a stint at Hickman Design Associates. “I learned so much at both places,” says Krueger. “I learned about quality and craftsmanship from Holly Hunt and that design is a business. I learned about customer service and sales at the highest level and what it means to advocate for your designers. A trait that has served me well from my time there is how to keep things moving. Your output is related to your input, so you need to make

decisions and follow up. That has been a key to keeping my business growing. With Tracy Hickman, I learned about the pressure of timelines and all the different elements that go into a design project, from making product selections to managing clients, builders, and architects. She was the best person to learn from because she was fun and kind, had no ego whatsoever, and was willing to share. She was the reason I knew I could start my own business.” Krueger did just that in 2012 and over the years, has helped clients surround themselves with environments that reflect their tastes and lifestyles. While every project is different, Krueger approaches each with a fundamental philosophy: give each room a sense of purpose. “This can be achieved in a simple and serene design, or a maximalist one,” notes Krueger. “And it is achieved through the harmony of architecture, lighting, furnishing, art, and accessories. That is why our service goes from start to finish. Building a beautiful home and not finishing it is like wearing a great dress, but ignoring your hair and makeup.” Finishing a room often comes down to the little things—a chair positioned just so in that otherwise forlorn corner, a painting hung above a console table to increase the sense of height in a foyer. Krueger, who is comfortable working in a clean contemporary vein as well as a more layered traditional style, is a master at

rounding out the essence of a room. So perhaps it’s only natural that she launched Opame Collective, a keenly curated offering of furniture, art, accessories, and textiles named after the Tibetan word for “infinite light.” “I was standing in the kitchen of my client, art collector Sid Parakh, as we were renovating his house,” shares Krueger. “He just threw the idea out there and I said, ‘Sure!’ He has manufacturing connections and an incredible eye. He’s really the heart of the operation.” In addition to featuring their own designs, Opame showcases a range of work from various artists and artisans, including the stoneware of Boyan Moskov, decorative objects in various materials from Los Angeles-based Parts of Four, and Atelier Nue’s highly textural wall pieces spun of suede and leather by Danish artist Benedicte Maria. the Collective, whether it be a vintage loom spindle reimagined into a decorative accent, a Ugandan stool woven from banana leaf stalks, or a custom cashmere rug, is a deep appreciation for natural materials, craftsmanship, and global connections. he Women’s Board of the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center raised more than $350,000 at its signature event—Soirée. More than 400 guests came together at Bryn Mawr Country Club to support the Museum’s mission to preserve the stories of Holocaust survivors and continue their legacy into the future. The evening kicked off with a piano bar as guests mingled, enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and cocktails, and bid on silent auction items. The board specifically earmarked funds from this event to support upcoming special exhibitions, virtual and in-person field trips to the Museum for students in underserved communities, and Law Enforcement Action and Democracy (LEAD) Training. ilholocaustmuseum.org

A Home for the Holidays in a Fairy Tale Setting

546 Lakeland Drive in East Lake Bluff 5+ Bedrooms | 7.1 Baths | 546Lakeland.com | $4,175,000 Located on a secluded cul de sac near Lake Michigan and only a 4-minute drive to Lake Forest High School, this classic English Country home appears to have been there for generations. Perfectly set on its spectacular 1.4-acre ravine property, it’s a rare nd in the heart of very east Lake Bluff! Custom-designed and built in 2001 by Rick Swanson, it embodies the best of all worlds: the classicism and craftsmanship of an older North Shore estate, combined with the modern technology and lower maintenance of newer construction. Its setting is unique: the slope into one of Lake Bluff’s most extraordinary deep ravines allows for multi-level lawn and garden areas accented by beautiful stone garden walls, blue stone patios. It features a stunning swimming pool as the focal point of the very private back yard. Built for both grand scale entertaining and intimate family living, this 7,418 square foot home features 5 + bedrooms; 7.1 baths; 6 replaces; 10-foot ceilings on the rst oor and 9-foot ceilings on the second oor; a greenhouse; and an attached 4-car garage. An elegant rst oor bedroom suite can be a second primary suite, or a lovely guest suite. There is also a luxurious nished walkout basement that leads to a patio area overlooking the deep and forested ravine. A signicant home like this rarely becomes available in a lifetime. Is this your moment?

PLASTIC SURGERY UPDATE: Coolsculpting Elite

C

oolsculpting has been FDA-approved since 2010. It is the gold standard for non-invasive fat reduction. At Skin Deep Medical Spa, we have treated thousands with this unique technology. We are now excited to introduce Coolsculpting Elite as the next generation in non-invasive cryolipolysis. Coolsculpting Elite is the new and improved version of Coolsculpting Legacy. It provides all the same benefits and many more. The same benefits include freezing fat using cryolipolysis, it is non-surgical and non-invasive, and it requires no downtime. The new benefits include: improved applicators that better fit the body’s natural curves, enhanced fat removal removes 20 to 25 percent of fat in a single treatment versus 18 to 20 percent of the old system, better skin contact with 18 percent more coverage with each treatment therefore fewer treatments are needed, and dual sculpting: each unit has the ability to use two applicators at a time, shortening appointment times. Areas that can be treated: • Inner, outer, front of thighs • Abdomen • Flanks or love handles • Bra fat, back fat • Under the buttock, “banana roll” • Upper arms • Submental area under the chin Coolsculpting Elite is not intended as a weight loss treatment but is intended to contour or sculpt the body much like liposuction without the need for surgery. To see if you are a candidate, schedule a consult at Skin Deep Medical Spa. As part of the consult, our guarantee and introductory pricing will be explained.

HIS MAJESTY

WORDS BY LAURA LAYFER TREITMAN / ILLUSTRATION BY ROBERT RISKO

he King is Dead, Long Live the King!: Majesty, Mourning and Modernity in Edwardian Britain may be the first literary publication by London-based Martin Williams, but his imprint on social media has reached fans far and wide who enjoy his posts of sophisticated images and information on cultural discourse. Williams’ inaugural title, available in the United States this fall, was highly anticipated by his more than 20,000 Instagram followers, where he is known as @disraeli81, a handle derived from the combination of a local neighborhood street and the year of his birth. Williams describes his book as a “conversation piece” about Britain circa 1910. “I’ve used King Edward VII and the event of his passing as a prism through which to examine the broader trends that defined the Edwardian era, and which, I maintain, created the conditions for the seismic changes of the twentieth century as a whole,” he explains. While Edward’s reign was just shy of a decade, he had traveled widely across the globe, including Chicago—the first member of the British Royal Family to do so. Perhaps that international exposure focused the world’s attention on the so-called “Black Ascot” of June 1910, which took place only a month after the King’s death. Partly a tribute to the King’s passion for horse racing, the event was a moment of mourning and high glamour that captured the public’s imagination for decades. Over half a century later, photographer and Oscar-winning designer Cecil Beaton used it as the basis for his black and white costumes in the Hollywood adaptation of My Fair Lady, starring Audrey Hepburn. What became apparent during his research, Williams points out, is that “although the world of 1910 seems remote in many ways, it’s also strangely relatable in others.” When Edward VII lay in state in Westminster Hall in May 1910, it provided an unprecedented opportunity for his sub-

jects to pay their last respects to the popular monarch. In 2022, his great-granddaughter Queen Elizabeth II received the same treatment as she was similarly revered. Both monarchs harnessed advances in technology and transportation to foster close relationships with people and places. Williams’ career began long before the scrolling of iPhones. It was page-turning tales that initially sparked his interest. “I was certainly the only 10-yearold at my school reading about English 18th-century furniture and Victorian fashion,” he laughs. He was fortunate to have parents who obliged their son’s requests for visits to stately homes and museums. Not surprisingly, his favorite television shows ranged from Pride and Prejudice to Brideshead Revisited. In them, “I could see recreated not only the masterpieces of English literature, but also the clothes, interiors, architecture, and manners of the last three centuries.” After taking Joint Honors in English and History of Art at university, Williams entered the auction house arena. Following positions at Christie’s and Bonhams, he was hired by Sotheby’s Institute of Art to assist with Public Programs. In this role, he accessed a whole new sector of the art market and, in turn, the art of marketing. “I was encouraged to spread my wings, delivering a diverse array of lectures and tours for private clients and groups in cities from Los Angles to Abu Dhabi.” The encouragement of the Institute’s marketing director to embrace social media planted the seeds for William’s own highly successful internet persona. And in his current debut as an author, Williams, much like his main subject, seeks progress by paying homage to the past through the means of the present. Find Martin Williams on Instagram @disraeli81. The King is Dead, Long Live the King!: Majesty, Mourning and Modernity in Edwardian Britain is published by Hodder & Stoughton Ltd.

Dear clients and friends, My favorite holiday of the year is Thanksgiving…this is because there is no wrapping of gifts, no endless hours of house decorating, no fighting about where to get the best tree or who needs to put it up! It’s my favorite because it’s all about being thankful for those who bring you happiness and what you have today. The world is changing once again…it’s time to stop to hug the ones that make your life special today. Be thankful for just something that simple.
