THIS MONTH I WILL BE
Our September issue marries themes of fashion, nature, and design. The first feature reveals the season’s most coveted looks presented against Lake Forest Open Lands’ lush landscape. Heading inside, our second feature showcases the talented and overall fabulousness of designer Lisa Perry. Her colorful designs are eye-catching and fun-spirited. Continuing the design thread, our third feature sits down with André Leon Talley to chat about his days at Ebony magazine and his fashionable adventures with Eunice Johnson and her daughter, Linda. Turning back to nature, our last feature explores the art of nature-inspired textiles. Erin McCarthy and Mindy Turitz founders of MERINDA STUDIO, share how their interior products bring the outdoors in.
Another nature fan, Lake Forest’s Nisha York, is highlighted in Shore vs. City. Nisha shares her hot spots both on the shore and in the city. Keeping it in the family, SR Teen sits down with Nisha’s daughter, Chloe who is a role model for girls and an advocate for diversity education in schools. This dynamic duo is sure to create change in the world.
Trading classrooms for studios, Art & Artist highlights the “spot on genius” of Jill Pam. Jill creates breathtaking portraits using her invented medium, “hole punch art.” Swapping hole punches for pencils, Trending features Northwestern Settlement Board Chair Amy O’Donnell who explains how the Settlement pivoted from response to recovery during COVID to ensure students don’t lose out on learning.
Dreaming of travel again? First Class whisks us to the gorgeous Galapagos Islands. From white sand beaches to rocky cliffs, the Galapagos Islands have incredibly diverse terrain and wildlife—including sea turtles, giant tortoises, sea
lions, blue-footed boobies, and penguins. Prepare to commune with nature and meet numerous endemic species in a South American paradise.
Back on the North Shore, Home Tour showcases a stunning Lake Forest estate featured as the 2020 Lake Forest Showhouse, a project of the Lake Forest Auxiliary Chapter of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago. In case you missed it, we provide your last look at the stellar designs of this year’s participants.
The issue concludes with a look at the life and legacy of Lake Forest’s Edith Rockefeller McCormick in Parting Words

DÉCOR PRINCE
MAISON DU PRINCE is an independently-owned, home and floral boutique in Winnetka’s Laundry Mall. Owner, Ramsey Prince, applies his artistic eye and background in interior design to curate the boutique’s unique merchandise. “We offer various candle lines including our own signature brand, handmade vessels for flowers and plants, home accents, and furnishings peppered with unique vintage finds and, of course, fresh floral brought in daily,” says Prince. Maison Du Prince is also excited to offer its customers special event floral and décor and custom corporate and personal gift packages. Prince doesn’t stop at singular events, he is also offering a subscription program, The Beehive, which allows customers to sign up for monthly or weekly fresh floral delivery.
The boutique materialized after many conversations between Prince and his now business partner, Sarah Airola. The two started a friendship years ago while working in the event industry. As an event planner with North Shore Weddings and Events, Airola saw Ramsey’s breathtaking creations firsthand. “I felt he had to develop his own brand,” she says. Both felt Winnetka would be the perfect location for the boutique. “We knew the North Shore community would appreciate the quality and creativity we hoped to showcase throughout the business, as well as our dedication to offering a high level of service to every client,” explains Prince. For more information, visit maisonduprincedesign.com.

ACTIVATING YOUNG VOICES
Activist and model CHLOE YORK discusses her commitment to diversity training and education.
WORDS BY RYAN HUDGINS PHOTOGRAPHY BY ZOE MCKENZIE PHOTOGRAPHY
Arising freshman at Lake Forest High School, Chloe York is considered a “mixedrace” girl: a quarter Indian, a quarter Filipino, and the other half comprised of English, Irish, Syrian, and Lebanese.
After hearing disheartening comments that lacked awareness about race and religion on a number of occasions, it became evident to York that there needed to be diversity training and education within the community.
York submitted a proposal to The Spirit of 67 Foundation, a group of visionary community leaders and parents who fund enriching educational experiences for District 67, which includes Lake Forest’s Cherokee, Everett, and Sheridan Elementary Schools and Deer Path Middle School (DPM). She hoped to receive grant money to bring diversity and inclusion training and education to her middle school.
An eye-catching t-shirt with graphics designed by the world-renowned artist Banksy inspired the proposal’s memorable name “Be Like A Panda.” The sentiment encompassed the diversification she hoped to celebrate in her grant: (Destroy Racism) Be Like A Panda—he’s black, he’s white, and he’s Asian.
“As I was writing the grant, I realized the statement related to everything and summed up the proposal in a fun way,” York says.
York’s $10,000 grant was approved and funded in early 2019, allowing for a two-day diversity and inclusion education program at DPM facilitated by inQUEST consulting.
In March 2020, inQUEST came to DPM for one day, as COVID-19 forced the abrupt transition to online education and limited the two-day program to a single one.
Despite the expedited program, students
still participated in interactive activities complete with engaging lessons about being more accepting and embracive of diversity. York also gave a compelling presentation to her peers, providing them with insight on how receiving the grant impacted her and what she hoped students would take away from the program.
The training was revolutionary for District 67, reflecting a new educational opportunity. However, York’s vision for diversity training and education is not limited to the one-day effort.
“It would be really useful to incorporate these teachings into the curriculum,” York says. “If we think with that mindset every day, we will start to see change.”
“I feel that this training is just as important as math, as learning how to add and subtract. If we incorporate it at a young age, people will grow up with an open mind of embracing differences, rather than fearing them. That is how we will make a change in our community, and the world,” York explains.
While COVID-19 could have put York’s aspirations on pause, the current climate of nationwide protest and unrest surrounding racial disparities has increased her desire to continue her efforts of promoting diversity and inclusion awareness in the community and beyond.
York is also channeling her energy into a new-found passion: modeling for Chicago’s BMG Models. In March, she signed a multiyear contract with the agency.
“I wanted to start modeling to see more girls that look ethnically diverse because I know I would have loved to see that when I was younger,” York says. “I want to be a role model for young girls.”
And that she certainly is in more ways than one.

While Perlis Wellness and Aesthetic Center offers cosmetic treatments such as Botox®, dermal fillers, brand-new state-of-theart lasers, and a full menu of aesthetic services, Perlis believes that feeling better and looking better go hand in hand.
“At our practice, we take a holistic approach to the well-being of patients as well as the aesthetics and how they look,” Perlis explains. “In our office, we work as a team and we listen very carefully to what patients are asking for and their needs and expectations.”
Perlis cites as an example patients who may have skin irritation or puffiness under the eyes. While lasers and other treatments might help improve the skin, she is more interested in getting to the root of the problem.
“My approach is asking this patient if they’ve ever tested their thyroid, or if they have any dietary intolerances to gluten or dairy. I’m looking more at what’s occurring in their body as a cause for the irritation on their face,” she says.
Perlis recently brought in a new medical aesthetician, Anne Yeaton, who brings more than 20 years of experience on the North Shore and shares Perlis’ philosophy of treating patients holistically.
INSIDE AND OUT
WORDS
“What can we do to help ourselves feel better?”
That’s the underlying question Dr. Cheryl Perlis asks when treating patients at Perlis Wellness and Aesthetic Center in Lake Bluff, one of the North Shore’s top locations for health and cosmetic services.
“I think having the right people and the right team together really makes a difference. What people will find in my office is that we really care for them,” she says. “It’s not just come in for a treatment and ‘see you later.’ It’s more about long-term relationships. That’s the key.”
Many of Perlis’ patients are between the ages of 45 and 65 and are concerned about maintaining their health and looks as they age.
“They want to look better but they also want to really feel better,” she says. “That’s a big thing. They want to know how they can age well, enjoy their life, and prevent disease.”
Perlis says she doesn’t like to be “stagnant” with her education and continually seeks to learn the latest techniques for injectable treatments in the face and is always incorporating new technology into her practice. She mentions the Silouette InstaLift® threads, a non-invasive procedure that produces similar results to a facelift.
But for Perlis, it always comes back to treating patients holistically and with an eye toward long-term results, whether it’s analyzing and changing her patient’s lifestyles or improving their self-confidence with aesthetic treatments, Dr. Perlis knows how to make her patients feel better. As a survivor of Bell’s Palsy, a condition that causes paralysis of the skin on one side of the face, she can identify with those she seeks to help.
“It’s about looking and feeling better, aging gracefully, and managing stress. If you feel better physically and feel better about the way you look it improves your relationships and makes them stronger,” says Perlis. “I believe strongly that if you start with you, once you change, everyone around you changes for the better.”

CUTTING EDGE – ARTAS IX HAIR RESTORATION
Dr. Gregory Turowski and New Horizons Center for Cosmetic Surgery offer North Shore patients the latest and most advanced hair transplant technology to restore patients’ looks and confidence.
WORDS BY MITCH HURST
Fighting the aging process can feel like a losing battle. For men and women who are losing their hair, each peek in the mirror is a reminder of days gone by. However, advances in new hair transplant technology are giving them a second chance at growing a naturally fuller head of hair. This precise technology allows Dr. Turowski’s team the ability to create natural and predictable transplant results.
Dr. Gregory Turowski, a Harvard trained plastic surgeon and a world-known pioneer of robotic hair transplantation, has been utilizing the ARTAS robot since 2013. He is not only a robotic transplantation innovator but also one of the most experienced robotic operators in the world. Under his leadership, his robots have transplanted millions of hairs. While robots are amazing tools, only the combination of top technology with an extremely experienced and dedicated team ensures unmatched results.
Over its 7-year history, the robotic hair transplant machine has been upgraded several times. It has become the most advanced and successful method of hair transplantation. Currently, New Horizons Center is the only location in the Midwest offering the most revolutionary ARTAS iX robot. Although there are many methods of hair restoration, ARTAS iX offers several advantages. The robot’s Artificial Intelligence system ensures only the best hair grafts are selected for transplant. This allows for increased survival and density of the final scalp coverage. The machine’s incredible speed of over 1600 graft harvests per hour is unmatched by any other transplant method. Additionally, ARTAS iX has the unique capability of not only harvesting grafts for transplant but also preparing the placement sites for transplanted hairs and implanting these hairs at an astonishing 4000 grafts/hour speed. The speed aids graft survival with the added benefits of shorter patient care time. The speed of transplantation with ARTAS iX also allows for the unique added benefit of 100% preservation of existing hair, a feature not possible with any other transplant method.
Despite impressive speed, it is the final transplant results that truly matter. Dr. Turowski and his team are achieving stunning, natural-looking, and lasting results. Please visit the website’s before/after gallery to check out their work.
“We are proud of our results. We strive to make New Horizons a place where we combine experience, high quality, innovation, and safety to improve our patients’ lives.
Hair restoration can improve the quality of life for men and women in powerful ways. You CAN feel the wind in your hair again.” – Dr. Turowski

KETAMINE: A VIABLE ALTERNATIVE FOR MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT
Ketamine infusions can help provide relief from a host of mental illness symptoms.
WORDS BY DR. BAL NANDRA / PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR
Reports show that the COVID-19 pandemic is bringing on increased feelings of anxiety, isolation, depression, stress, and uncertainty unlike any other times experienced in the past. Even in the absence of underlying or previous mental illness, the challenges we as a nation and society face today can cause generalized anxiety and depression.
For those with a history of depression or anxiety, symptoms may worsen and as Chief Medical Officer at IV Solution and Ketamine Centers, I have seen a large increase in the need for our services since quarantine began. We are seeing that the population as a whole is experiencing pressures that will undoubtedly tax our mental health for the unforeseeable future, and we are here to help those suffering manage.
Per the American Society of Ketamine Physicians (ASKP), ketamine therapy has been declared an essential service during the COVID-19 pandemic. If you struggle from major depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and haven’t found antidepressants and other medications to be effective, or if the stress throughout this pandemic has worsened your depression, ketamine can get you relief in just a few days. FDA data supports ketamine infusion therapy treatment for depression, anxiety, PTSD, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), as well as chronic pain, fibromyalgia, and migraines.
Our full medical team, comprised of anesthesiologists and registered nurses, creates customized plans for patients by collaborating with their primary care physician, specialist, or mental health professional to optimize treatment and ensure continuity of care. Everything is tailored to what each patient requires during this time and beyond.
Ketamine is effective within hours to days with minimal side effects. Most of our patients have improvement after their first or second ketamine infusion and feel very relaxed while they are receiving the treatment. Many patients, with the guidance of their psychiatrist or physician, may be able to decrease or even eliminate their other medications after the treatments.
After the series of six 45-minute infusions for depression done over a period of two to three weeks, patients typically report relief of symptoms for many weeks and sometimes months, after which time booster infusions may be scheduled as needed. Patients can inquire directly for the treatment or can be referred by their physician or mental health professional.
During these times of increased stress, anxiety, isolation, and uncertainty, we are committed to providing services to everyone who needs them, and we take full disinfection and PPP precautions per CDC recommendations, minimizing person-to-person contact and wait times in our medical facility. Patients are also screened carefully before appointments.
In addition to ketamine treatments, we emphasize doing one’s best to maintain a routine that will support mental, physical, emotional, and social health:
• F irst and foremost, continue to follow the recommendations set forth by your psychiatrist or mental health provider.
• Continue taking your medications, and if your symptoms are worsened by the pandemic contact your doctor for an evaluation and/or adjustment.
• See your therapist through teleconferencing if possible.
• Try to exercise regularly at least 30 minutes a day, three or more times a week.
• Take advantage of the surge in online and live streaming exercise sessions.
• Use FaceTime or Zoom to video chat with your best friend or even with a large group.
• Try to keep only positive influences around you and do not let the negative energy of others bring you down.
We understand nothing about these times is normal and many people are suffering. If ketamine is a potential option for you, please contact us and we will evaluate and coordinate your care with a free phone consultation. Please be safe, stay healthy, and know we will get through this together.
IV Solutions and Ketamine Centers is located at 300 Village Green Road, Suite 225 in Lincolnshire and at 712 N. Dearborn Street in Chicago. For more information, call 844-9-IV-MEDS (948-6337) or visit chicagoivsolution.com or ketmainechicago.com to watch and listen to our patient testimonials, and our news and radio stories.

Jill Pam
On a snowy afternoon in Michigan last winter, Glencoe resident Jill Pam found herself stranded at home with only a few magazines and craft supplies, like a hole punch and glue, to pass the time. So, being the creative she was born to be, she starting using the hole punch to create an assortment of dots. She then painstakingly reconstructed the tiny pieces into a portrait of Pop Icon Lady Gaga, dubbing the process “hole punch art.”
“I know it is a cliché, but I like to think I turned lemons into lemonade,” says Pam. “This unexpected time to myself gave me the freedom to settle in and access art in a new way, which completely changed the way I look at things. It is a good lesson for all of us.”
Pam says art has always been “in her blood,” and she grew up with parents who instilled a love of culture in their children, regularly taking them to museums and the theater. Perhaps it was then that Pam was first exposed to impressionism and the work of her favorite pop artists, like painter Chuck Close, visual artist
Andy Warhol, and Chicagobased Nancy Rosen, the artist behind “Frankie” from Grace and Frankie on Netflix.
Pam transitioned from the Fiddlestick markers and doodling of her youth to playing with ceramics and stained glass at overnight camp, then studying painting, sculpture, and drawing in school before eventually evolving to the hole punch art medium she invented. Throughout her myriad evolutions, Pam has always been rooted in a love for creativity and growth.
“Impressionism had a major impact on me when I was young and throughout my years in school,” says Pam. “It taught me about natural light and still helps me today when creating my hole punch art. I have always been an experiential learner versus a textbook one. And I have always had an attraction to paper.”
Now Pam finds inspiration in both popular culture—sorting through dozens and dozens of magazines to find a mix of textures and patterns—and in her commissions, asking clients to share multiple photos so she can select the one that will best come to life on the page. Her process, she says, is akin to a jigsaw puzzle, and each hole is punched and placed with consideration.
Now Pam has created portraits of notable names ranging from Michelle Obama and Bruce Springsteen to Prince and Ben Platt,

which Pam made as a gift for her niece’s 21st birthday. Recently, she started selling affordable reprints that fit in standard frames and is working on a way to photoshop the images so clients can custom order a background color to fit their needs if, say, Prince’s purple will not.
“I love the Ben Platt piece,” says Pam. “It took me months and months and was the first project I made for someone else. But I love them all for different reasons. I’m surprised by the response to the Happy Buddha, which is definitely my most recognized portrait. It seems to impact people, which I attribute to the vibrant colors.”
In much the same way, Pam has turned to art as a refuge during rough times. During the COVID-19 outbreak this spring, she created a print of the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia and donated the proceeds from her reprints to two different nonprofit organizations.
And to support the fight for racial equality, Pam made a custom Black Lives Matter piece with hues of black, brown, purple, green, blue, orange, yellow, and white. “Each shade carries equal importance to the one next to, in front of or behind, and they are placed side by side to create one piece,” explains Pam.
Reprint proceeds benefit Imagine Englewood If, an organization with the mission to strengthen and empower the greater Englewood community through teaching local youth and their families healthy living, environmental awareness, and positive communication skills.
Recently, Pam’s son brought her a portrait of Marsha P. Johnson, a black transgender woman who was a central figure in the gay liberation movement and asked Pam to create a portrait. She says the piece is “in the works” and proceeds will likely benefit the LGBTQ community.
“Marsha was a colorful woman, so I have enjoyed making a large-scale, smiley piece,” says Pam. “I have felt really helpless with the unrest in our world and wanted to help people in underserved communities in whatever small way I could. It feels more
important right now to give than to sell or promote.”
To stay relaxed while hole punching, Pam listens to podcasts like Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, Brené Brown’s Unlocking Us, and Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend when Pam herself needs a laugh.
“I need structure in my day,” says Pam. “I start with yoga and have been spending more and more time in our yard and vegetable garden, taking the dog to the dog park now that it has reopened, going on walks, binging TV shows, and hosting barbecues and games with my family.”
Of course, as winter approaches, we can only hope for another snow day to inspire the next evolution of Pam’s art.

Winnetka’s AMY O’DONNELL became Chair of the Board of Directors at Northwestern Settlement in Chicago during the height of the COVID and social justice crises. She is one of the few women to hold this position since Northwestern University Settlement House’s (NUSH) founding in 1891. During the shutdown, NUSH transitioned over 1,000 atrisk students at Rowe Elementary to e-learning, ramped up capacity to serve quadruple the number of families in their food pantry (more than 800 per week), and initiated telehealth for clients in their CARES mental health clinic. Pursuing the mission of disrupting youth poverty in Chicago, NUSH is now switching from response to recovery in all their programs, including the beloved House in the Wood outdoor STEM education program, which was closed due to the pandemic. Unable to hold their annual benefit gala in person, NUSH’s North Shore Auxiliary Board has launched an appeal for recovery support, Reach for the Stars (for more information or to participate, visit northshoreboard.org). Here is how O’Donnell, stays current in an ever-changing world.

CLASSIC VEAL STROGANOFF
RECIPE
SHERIDAN ROAD 64
WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS
When Count Pavel Alexandrovich Stroganov wasn’t busy commanding the Russian infantry in Napoleonic Wars, he feasted at home. Historians suggest that an early version of the stroganoff the world came to love was served in Stroganov’s family kitchens for many years before it was published in a Russian cookbook in 1871. Early stroganoffs featured beef cooked in sour cream, with a little mustard, flour, butter, and not much else. However by 1927, when the dish was first published in America (in The Congressional Club Cook Book: Favorite National and International Recipes), it had evolved to include onions, mushrooms, stock, Worcestershire sauce, and even a little pureed tomato. Our version builds on a recipe that Gourmet magazine published in 1963. Like the early versions of the dish, it’s made with tiny cubes of meat (we chose veal) simmered in butter. But we’ve included a full pound of Cremini mushrooms, a cup of medium-dry sherry, and just a little bit of sour cream. Try it over pappardelle egg noodles, with shaved parmesan and a sprinkling of parsley. If you can’t get veal, this is also good with finely cubed pork loin. For a fully vegetarian version, just double up the Cremini mushrooms and leave out the meat entirely, switching to vegetable stock instead of chicken or veal stock.
CLASS VEAL STROGANOFF Serves 8
Ingredients:
• 1 pound Cremini (baby Portabella) mushrooms, sliced thin
• 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, divided
• 1 large onion, finely chopped
• 2 pounds veal blade steak (thin-sliced veal shoulder) bones removed and discarded, meat cut into tiny cubes
• 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
• 1 cup medium-dr y sherry
• 1 cup good-quality chicken or veal stock
• 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
• 1 teaspoon sweet paprika
• freshly-ground salt and pepper to taste
• 3/4 pound pappardelle egg noodles
• 1/2 cup sour cream
• Shaved parmesan & fresh snipped parsley, to garnish
Method:
• In a heavy sauté pan over medium heat, melt 1/2 stick (1/4 cup) of butter. Sauté the mushrooms. Drain and reserve the liquid—there won’t be very much. Set cooked mushrooms aside. Melt the remaining 1/2 stick of butter and sauté the onion until it begins to soften. Add cubed veal and sauté until the veal no longer shows any pink. Reduce heat to low. Sprinkle flour over the veal; whisk in stock, sherry, and the reserved mushroom liquid. Whisk and continue simmering until the mixture thickens. Add Worcestershire sauce, paprika, salt, and pepper. Adjust seasonings as needed. Keep warm while you cook noodles.
• Cook noodles in boiling salted water until just tender and drain.
• Stir reserved mushrooms and 1/2 cup of sour cream into stroganoff sauce mixture.
• Serve sauce over noodles, garnished with shaved parmesan and snipped parsley.

PARADISE FOUND
Island hop aboard an eco-friendly mega yacht in the Galapagos Islands—a place seemingly untouched by the passage of time.
WORDS BY DUSTIN O’REGAN / PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF ECOVENTURA
The Galapagos Islands are one of the world’s most elusive locations and the birthplace of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. They are a place to glimpse endemic species; those species that can be found nowhere else on earth. Each island has a distinct terrain. Be it white sandy beaches favored by sea lions or rocky surfaces dotted with cacti and
iguanas or soaring cliffs home to a vast array of birds or lush landscapes favored by pink flamingos or volcanic outcroppings created by lava cooling on its descent to the sea. There is no better way to interact with the Galapagos Islands’ incredible beauty than on Ecoventura-operated sister ships Theory and Origin, Relais & Chateaux ten-cabin mega-yachts. The sister yachts sail the archipelago together and are typically the only two ships at any particular destination.
After a remarkably short set of flights from

FIRST CLASS
Chicago, my family arrived on San Cristobal Island where we boarded a swift, little skiff known as a panga. We set off for a thrilling ride to our yacht, the Theory anchored in the bay. We were excited to see sea lions lounging about on boats and darting around our vessel—the first of many encounters with these joyous creatures.
The Theory is appointed bow to stern in sleek, modern design. The first deck houses wetsuits and snorkel gear. We met here several times a day to board the pangas that carried us off to new adventures. A heavy metal door on this deck opens to reveal gorgeous blonde wood floors leading to the sleeping quarters. The top deck or “sun deck” with its full bar and hot tub is a glorious space for dining, sunning, and relaxing. The main deck holds the lounge where guests meet each evening for the day’s debriefing and a teaser for the next day’s activities. Outfitted with couches, gorgeous light fixtures, mirrors, and overflowing bowls of chocolate, the lounge proved to be a wonderful space to convene. Beyond the lounge, a fully stocked bar leads into the dining room where buffet breakfasts and lunches and several course dinners, all created with locally sourced ingredients, are enjoyed daily.
During dinners, our crew brought forth course after course with a flourish and accompanied each dish with a hearty pour of wine. At evening’s end, we descended to our ample rooms—adorned with mirrored vanity tables, floor-to-ceiling windows, a marble bathroom, and king beds. A deep slumber coaxed by the give and take of the undulating sea was quick to follow.
Often, during the late evening hours, our captain commanded the Theory toward a new destination and our next great adventure.
ITINERARY
We followed Ecoventura’s “Beaches & Bays” itinerary, which visited the South East islands. Each day, in two groups of 10, we set off with our licensed naturalist who was an expert in all things Galapagos.
Our first day began with a delicious breakfast followed by a panga ride to Cerro Brujo or Wizard Hill. Here we communed with large black iguanas, playful sea lions, and a wide variety of birds ranging from brown pelicans and brown noddy terns to blue-footed boobies all dive-bombing the bluest of waters intent on lunch. Bright red Sally Lightfoot crabs scampered over the black volcanic rocks while our guide pointed out geological formations including the Cathedral, jokingly referred to as “Darwin’s Pants.” In the afternoon, we hiked Punta Pitt, considered one of

the best sights for bird watching and one of the only places to see all three species of boobies—the blue-footed, red-footed, and the Nazca. At Pitt Point, we snorkeled with acrobatic sea lions who happily smiled for our GoPros.
On day two, we landed at Espanola Island where our guide pointed out a large number of endemic species, including the land iguanas sunbathing in their coats of many colors. While they are usually black, during mating season these iguanas develop bright red and green coloration from the algae they consume. Be careful not to step on these colorful fellows, who are so mesmerized by the sun they fail to notice tourists. As we hiked over a rocky cliffside to a magnificent blowhole, we passed an infinite array of birds including the worlds’ only nocturnal gull—the Swallow Tailed Gull—and fluffy baby boobies. On our journey back, we passed an inlet our guide referred to as “the nursery”—a nod to the numerous frolicking “pups” or baby sea lions.
After an Ecuadorian ceviche cooking demonstration, we enjoyed lunch on the sun deck where we noticed schools of dolphins playfully surrounding the yacht. Next up was snorkeling at Tortuga Rock where we swam with sea turtles and a wonderful array of colorful fish including my favorite, the comical Parrotfish. Since I always hoped to swim with sea turtles, I was enchanted to encounter these creatures ebbing and flowing with the waves just a few feet from me—their chill personality perfectly captured in the Disney film Finding Nemo. Later that afternoon, we visited Gardner Bay’s beautiful white sand beach; home to scores of lolling sea lions.
Day three entailed a trip to the lush Floreana Island, which boasts green hills, gorgeous shallow beaches full of stingrays, and a brackish lagoon favored by pink flamingos. Following a delicious lunch on the sun deck and a short siesta, we snorkeled at Devil’s Crown—a shallow sunken crater brimming with whitetip sharks, gorgeous starfish, eagle rays, and to my delight, more sea turtles.
Day four we visited Santa Cruz, which bustles with giant tortoises. As we drove into the highlands, our driver had to navigate around several of these enormous shell-encased reptiles as they meandered in the road. We spent the morning strolling with the slow-moving giants, who can weigh in excess of 500 pounds. After visiting an astonishing lava tunnel, we headed to the Centro de Crianza to learn about the Galapagos’ most famous visitor, Charles Darwin.
On day five, we set off for a vigorous hike around Bartolome Island. Our reward for the effort was a stunning panoramic view of Pinnacle Rock. During a short rest, our guide revealed the ge-

ology of the landscape, pointing out mini lava cones and bombs formed by flowing magma from past volcanic eruptions. Following the hike, we eagerly jumped into the refreshing crystal-clear water to swim with Galapagos penguins (the second smallest penguin species on the planet), schools of tropical fish, and whitetip sharks. On the way back to the yacht, I caught sight of three little penguins standing at attention—their stance humorously like the Queen’s Guard. In the afternoon, we visited Playa las Bachas—a beach favored by nesting sea turtles. Tracks were everywhere, revealing the turtles’ slow crawl up the beach to lay eggs and then the descent back to their watery home.
Day six began at South Plaza Island. The small islet is crowned with tall cliffs and features a rocky trail dotted with prickly pear cactus, a delicacy for the land iguanas. We marveled at the persistence of an iguana as it balanced precariously on one leg while holding on to the cactus for dear life, focused ever so much on breakfast. The island is also home to many birds such as the Swallow Tailed Gull, shearwaters, and finches.
Returning to the yacht we sailed to North Seymour Island, where an expansive number of frigate birds inflated red sacs on their chests hoping to entice a mate. This day marked our last deep-water snorkel, which did not fail to impress as we saw hammerhead sharks, more whitetip sharks, turtles, my old friend the Parrotfish, and puffy,
colorful starfish. The final evening on this unforgettable journey was highlighted by the Captain’s Farewell Party, where we toasted our new friends with champagne before one last exquisite meal.
I had always dreamed of visiting the Galapagos Islands but never imagined the extent of their beauty nor the impact of an intimate communion with nature. These islands will touch your soul. Go as soon as possible ... your great adventure awaits.

In case you missed it, here is a last look at the 2020 Showhouse & Gardens’ grand Lake Forest estate.
WORDS BY ALLISON DUNCAN
In the late 1920s, renowned architect Stanley Anderson gut renovated a 1906 colonial style home—originally designed by Frost & Granger—for investment banker William Allan Pinkerton Pullman, a relative of the famed car developer and manufacturer George M. Pullman.
Anderson had already made myriad contributions to the visual character of Lake Forest throughout his career—think the concrete post and lantern style streetlight designs throughout the city and the design of Lake Forest High School— and his turn-of-the-century architecture helped later inspire the world class gardens on the property by New York landscape architect Annette Hoyt Flanders, who worked with Pullman in 1937.
An avid gardener and co-founder of the Chicago Botanic Garden, Pullman planted Ginkgo trees, rare Chinese maples, Japanese lilacs, and boxwood hedges, many of which still exist today. Both
the interior and exterior designs have stood the test of time so, when the Lake Forest Auxiliary Chapter of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago named the home for its 2020 Showhouse & Gardens, participating designers were tasked with honoring the heritage and character of the house for a modern audience.
Since 1985, the Lake Forest Auxiliary Chapter of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago has hosted a nationally recognized designer Showhouse & Gardens to benefit the Angel Harvey Family Health Center of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago, which provides healthcare to Chicago’s medically underserved. Since its inception, the Lake Forest Showhouse has raised in excess of $4 million for the deserving cause.
This year, almost 40 interior and landscape designers, including honorary chair Paloma Contreras, transformed the 23 room, 11,000-square-foot East Lake Forest Pullman property into a show stopping tribute to the latest in design and décor.
SHERIDAN ROAD 72
Guests enter through the historic foyer, where interior designer Natalie Konstant decorated around an existing Zuber wallcovering. “Zuber had such an impact on traditional French design,” says Konstant. “I ended up studying and researching designs of the French modernist era and what started as a design ‘constraint’ ended up inspiring the entire aesthetic.”
She conceptualized a contemporary entry sideboard to play with the traditional setting and also added sculptural pieces, like The Fertility Idol by Material Think Space cast in Italian Bardiglio marble and a Venus de Milo cast amber resin sculpture set atop an ebony stained wood pedestal.
“A thoughtful integration of the interiors and architecture is what ultimately creates the most impactful spaces,” explains Konstant.
George Markoutsas of The ABL Group also took inspiration from the Zuber wallcovering in the house’s kitchen design.
“We coalesced the seemingly Persian iconography of the wallpaper—with its curvilinear natural elements juxtaposed with sharp clean lines—into our design to create a sense of harmony within the home,” says Markoutsas. “When we enter a space, we want our designs to feel as organic as possible.”
Markoutsas and his team worked with the travertine checkerboard flooring and wood beams original to the home, adding a reclaimed barnwood butcher block by Lake County Barnwood to the island with an antique sewing base, Amish-made cabinetry by Dovetails Cabinetry, and a food-safe quartz countertop by Cambria.
Hidden within the traditional styling are modern upgrades, like a Smart Home Automation System by Great Home Technologies and a vacuum by Hafele built-into the cabinetry.
“We are firm believers that form follows function, especially in kitchens,” notes Markoutsas.
Off the foyer, designer Sarah Vaile created a powder room jewel box with a color palette—Sherwin Williams Framboise—inspired by the burgundy Rolls Royce driven by Princess Margaret in The Crown. In fact, Princess Margaret served as the muse for the entire space.
“We loved the idea of playing up a vestige of proper homes of the past. The cloakroom off of the powder room is where we

imagined guests could congregate in small groups for a little mischievous conversation outside of the spotlight,” says Vaile.
A DeGournay Rousseau wallcovering, custom mosaic floor by Cambria, mirrored wall, and cheeky prints and tassels drive home the whimsical nature of the space.
“The DeGournay wall covering turned out to be quite a masterpiece,” says Vaile. “We meticulously placed every single animal in the space, our favorites being the monkey perched over the toilet eating an orange and a sloth playfully suspended over the mirror.”
For the home’s living room, fashion stylist turned designer Kelly Hurliman also took inspiration from French design, envisioning the space as a nod to Coco Chanel. Think floral sconces that look like earrings, Valentino-inspired trim on the fireplace, Horst P. Horst vintage Vogue fashion prints flanking the bookshelves, scalloped window seating by 5 One 5 Group, coral velvet upholstery, and an abstract art piece by Josh Young.
“We contrasted soft tones and layered textures against bold color,” says Hurliman. “What makes a space feel interesting and truly unique are the pieces that no one else has.”
Something most people do not yet have but will definitely covet is a potting room like the one by JamesThomas. The team paired black Venetian plaster on the walls with verdant green trim and faux oak-painted cabinetry and beams to create a layered, textured, and rich space to arrange flowers, transplant plants, create topiaries, and more.
“We loved the idea of a historic English manor house and the outbuildings that an estate like that would have,” says James Dolenc. “With COVID, people are gardening and landscaping more

than ever. Everyone wants to be outside enjoying nature but in the comfort of your own space. Who wouldn’t want a little nook dedicated to horticulture?”
Although not initially planned this way, the women’s retreat by Andrea Goldman Design is perhaps another response to COVID and is Goldman’s answer to decades of man caves, libraries, dens, and converted garages.
“This space functions as an epicenter for a woman’s life in her home,” says Goldman. “A serene retreat space feels incredibly necessary now that people are staying at home, and the space is versatile. It can be used for a game night, relaxing and reading, or morning coffee on the terrace.”
Filled with warm, light, and airy hues, the room features a
handblown glass pendant from Longhouse paired with knotted rope by artist Windy Chien; a French antique table to visually separate the lounge seating from the game/work table; layered Oscar Isberian rugs; and a one-of-a-kind 10-foot console table sourced from India with French postcards custom framed in linen. Two other female-centric spaces within the home include the master closet by Ilene Chase Design, gilded in shades of black, pink, and gold, and the home office by North Shore Nest with a standout floral Schumacher wallpaper.
Chase’s inspiration for the closet space was curated during her travels to Paris for Deco Off 2020. During her trip, she was surrounded by design, fashion, and the best of textiles, and was so in her element that creative visions were bursting at the seams. She could hardly wait to implement all of her finds into the closet design.
In the home office, Katie McFarlan balanced the palette with deep berries, charcoals, and blues. “The true inspiration for the room was the modern working mom or household CEO,” says McFarlan. To elevate the cozy den, the North Shore Nest team added a faux fireplace, berry-painted moldings, and created a closet-turned-bookshelf.
“Transforming this room into a woman’s space resonated with us as working moms because we know the struggle,” says McFarlan. “The banquette seating provides additional areas for working or relaxing, and we loved the idea of doing a ‘partner’s table’ instead of a typical desk.”
Ultimately, the 2020 Showhouse proved that there really is no place like home.

Lake Bluff’s Trading Treasures captivates; Stop in and get lost in its charm.
WORDS BY MEGAN WEISBERG

Tucked away in a corner of Lake Bluff is a gem hiding in plain sight. With 2,000 square feet of space, Trading Treasures is the ultimate spot for vintage lovers and furniture seekers alike. Curated by owner Sam Davie, it houses an ever-evolving collection of home décor ranging from furniture to lighting and accessories. The furniture consignment store is truly a spot where storied pieces find new life with new owners.
When Davie set about redecorating her home in 2015, she soon began the arduous process of selling furniture that no longer fit her aesthetic. At the same time, she found herself scouring estate sales and online sites for the perfect pieces to complete her vision. Chatting with friends about what was becoming a time-consuming endeavor, she discovered challenges and opportunities. Home renovators and sellers both were overwhelmed by the paring down process. A lack of an outlet for efficiently discarding furniture led

sellers to lose out on opportunities to sell otherwise valuable pieces. Similarly, new home buyers and their decorators wished for a trusted resource through which to obtain high-quality vintage and contemporary furniture and accessories at reasonable prices. Seeing space in the marketplace to develop a creative solution to help home sellers, renovators, and designers, Davie launched the unique furniture consignment business, Trading Treasures.
“Clients send me photos of furniture and home décor all the time,” says Davie. “Now, with years of experience, I’m able to quickly provide a reasonable assessment of the consignment value for each piece through a review of the photos and a quick conversation. On the flip side, designers and clients send me photos of rooms with a blank spot and ask for my help in finding the perfect addition.” As a fourth-generation Lake Forest resident, Davie is a trusted neighbor to turn to when not sure how to slim down a home prior to being listed for sale.
Trading Treasures’ collection is a mix of high-end designer selected furniture, vintage finds, and gently-used pieces from the likes of Crate & Barrel and Pottery Barn. “We are a perfect stop for parents looking to furnish their children’s first apartment and new home buyers looking for good values when furnishing their first larger suburban dream homes,” shares Davie. “My most active clientele includes some of our areas most respected designers with an eye for that perfect piece in need of a simple change of hardware or paint color to completely reinvent and breathe new life into what will grace their clients’ homes for years to come.” For those overwhelmed at the idea of shopping vintage? Davie is your trusted advisor.
It’s all in her tag line: “Trading the used, to treasure it new,”
Davie’s business model encourages sustainability ensuring high quality and long-lasting pieces see a second and third act. With an eye toward the environment, Davie is acutely aware of the positive effects of finding new homes for valuable pieces of furniture. And one unexpected perk of the job? “I recently opened up an issue of Forest & Bluff and saw a beautiful photo including a painting previously purchased at Trading Treasures,” Davie enthuses. A small world indeed.

LASTING LEGACY
Emmy-award winning reporter Megan Mawicke trades in the mic to carry on the real estate legacy of her late mother.
EDITED BY DUSTIN O’REGAN / PHOTOGRAPHY BY BRIAN MCCONKEY
If Megan Mawicke looks familiar, that’s because you’ve probably seen her before ... If not around the North Shore, then definitely on your TV screen. As one of the longest-tenured female sports anchors in Chicago, Mawicke has covered all of the city’s premier sporting events over the last two decades with CBS 2 Chicago. Including a Cubs and a White Sox World Series, a Bears Super Bowl, three Blackhawks Stanley Cup championships, and Bulls Eastern Conference Finals. If you can name it, she has most likely covered it.
Now, after an impressive 22-year career in broadcast journalism that earned her three Emmy awards, Mawicke has left the sports world to embark on a new journey with her brother, John, in the Mawicke Group—a top-producing real estate team with @properties. Together Mawicke and her brother are carrying on the legacy of their mother, Barbara, who was an icon in North Shore real estate for nearly 45 years before she passed away in March. We recently caught up with Mawicke to learn more about her recent career change.
How did you decide to venture into real estate?
My family has deep roots in the local real estate industry. My mother was the top-selling agent in Kenilworth almost every year for the past three decades, and she was the first North Shore real estate agent to achieve $1 billion in career sales volume. She was such an inspiration to me. A brilliant mind, a kind heart, and endless energy while balancing four kids and building a legendary career.
I have had my real estate license for nearly 20 years and always knew that I wanted to join my mom and brother. It was time for a change and we planned this next chapter together. My mom was
so supportive and excited, it’s now time to make her proud.
What can home buyers and sellers expect when they work with the Mawicke Group?
As our mother taught us, real estate is about people first. John and I learned the highest standards from our mother and that means we always strive to deliver an unparalleled level of professionalism, integrity, and service, whether we are working with first-time buyers and sellers or experienced ones. We grew up in Kenilworth and are passionate about the entire North Shore. We’re very involved in the community, so our clients know they can rely on us for intimate knowledge of local markets and neighborhoods. John and I complement each other very well, so our clients will gain the advantage of his extensive financial background along with my ability to connect with people.
In real estate, how will you draw upon your career in journalism?
I have been telling stories my entire TV career ... and every home has a story. I built a journalism career based upon communication and trust, and these are paramount to success in real estate.
What is your favorite Chicago sports memory?
Too many to single out, but the Cubs’ historic World Series run in 2016 was something I wasn’t certain I would ever cover. The locker room celebration was certainly one of a kind. However, what I always loved most was telling the stories of inspirational athletes.

Pop Into Designer Lisa Perry’s World
LISA PERRY traces her talent from the North Shore to New York and beyond.

“Hello.” “Goodbye.” “Fun?” “Enjoy!” These are just some of the words and punctuation marks that adorn the production output of designer Lisa Perry. From pillows and placemats to pretty A-line dresses, there is no question her brand is an exclamation of ’60s inspired style. Dots and circles, solids and stripes, flowers and rainbows, palettes of primary shades stand out amidst black or white stark backgrounds that structure a living space or an article of clothing. The interiors of her own homes (New York, Palm Beach, and the South of France), shared with her husband Richard, display this signature aesthetic, as does their museum-worthy collection of American and European Pop, Op, modern, and contemporary art. Perry traces the origins of her inspiration to suburban Chicago, where she grew up in a modernist home with mid-century furniture, frequented local thrift shops, and ever a tastemaker, still favors classic fare like hot dogs, Walker Bros., and Garrett Popcorn. It’s the town where she learned that color, like comfort food, can feed one’s feelings and emotions to serve what Perry calls “happy vibes.”
“My parents were part of the 1950s Beat Generation,” says Perry, talking about her father, an aspirational writer and painter, who later owned a textile firm, and her mother, a local Highland Park gallery owner showcasing crafts and works exclusively by college art department professors. Their adventurous spirit led to the purchase of a 1960s home in Riverwoods by architect George Frederick Keck (famous for his House of Tomorrow that debuted at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1933), complete with a central indoor glass-encased swimming pool and pieces by American and Scandinavian makers such as Charles and Ray Eames and Arne Jacobsen. “My mom and dad were not furniture collectors per se
but they understood and appreciated good design,” shares Perry, noting the influence simple and sleek lines had on training her eye. She selected Marimekko, the Finnish fabric house manufacturing bright and light prints, for her childhood bedroom. This was perhaps a perfect balance to her father’s abstract expressionist paintings that hung on the walls, the Missoni and Pucci caftans her mother wore, and the all-around “very liberal home” that Perry credits with forging her path. “My mom and sister were early feminists and supporters of women’s rights,” says Perry, and the importance of both social and political issues was central to the family hearth and to her own heart.
She moved to Manhattan and enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology, learning technical aspects of color dye and theories to apply in her future work at the NYC office of Dana Mills, the family business. “We did the type of furnishings for more commercial places like hotels where the curtains, bed coverings, and everything in the room matched.” Perry dabbled in acting, too, but once married with children, shifted her energy to volunteering at the hospital where her twins had been born, to studying psychology, and ultimately to supporting ways to change the imbalanced ratio of females to males in the Senate. She is a close friend of fellow former Chicagoan, Hillary Clinton, who also wrote the foreword to Perry’s book Lisa Perry: Fashion - Homes - Design (Assouline, 2019). “I felt that I could make a difference,” says Perry, and soon those efforts transitioned from hosting events to empowerment through entrepreneurship in dress and design.

“I first fell for Courrèges when I walked into one of the Paris boutiques on my honeymoon,” recalls Perry, citing her introduction to the streamlined and futuristic French fashions. Vintage became her trademark look and friends began asking where they could purchase the same. “These were one-of-akind pieces,” notes Perry, so with a contact in the garment district she made prototypes of her own vision. What followed were exclusive partnerships with high-end retailers Bergdorf Goodman and Barneys, among others, and stand-alone Lisa Perry shops on Madison Avenue and in the Hamptons. Easy flexible knitwear offered confidence and ease, or more directly put by Perry, “clothes to eat and sit in!”
She collaborated with artists Jeff Koons and the estate of Roy Lichtenstein, and created spaces filled with flavorful accents of her favorite M&Ms, Beatles photographs, and cozy space-age style seating. Perry wanted to outfit clients in both clothing and experience, and that expanded to a children’s line, tabletop objects, and as a result, a diversified price point and audience.
“I can find something great on any budget,” remarks Perry, as she now sets her sights on working with schools, daycares, hospitals, and possibly one day Pottery Barn or Target. While her retail outlets have closed, a few months ago she sold her first real estate venture of a Lisa Perry Home in Palm Beach, with architecture, artwork, and interiors all done by Perry. She has currently signed with an agency, TheEye, that she hopes will shift her oeuvre into those more public and institutional
arenas. “I have two different personas: minimalistic and bohemian,” laughs Perry, discussing her love for clean and chic lines just as much as her old Levis and embroidery. It’s that mix of whimsical versatility and wholesome values that reveals her Midwestern roots, and maybe even a little secret into how she keeps turning those design dreams into reality.

“As if she heard my soul crying out, I got a call from Mrs. Eunice Johnson, of Ebony magazine, asking if I would fly to Chicago and meet with her and her husband, Mr. John H. Johnson, scion of the Ebony empire,” writes André Leon Talley, former Creative Director and continuing Contributing Editor at Vogue, in his new bestseller 2020 memoir The Chiffon Trenches. The book touches on the author’s life from his youth in Durham, North Carolina, raised by his grandmother, and studies at Brown University (he holds an MA in French Literature), to his incredible journalism career starting in New York City. His internship at The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute, under legendary curator Diana Vreeland, led to work as an assistant with Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine, and to numerous prestigious editorial roles. It is the chapter, however, devoted to what Talley calls “one glorious year,” working with the late Mrs. Johnson, traveling to Paris couture shows with her and daughter Linda Johnson Rice (CEO of Johnson Publishing Company), that is considered here with reflection on an incomparable fashion journey and lifelong friendship formed by this dynamic trio.
“My mother read Women’s Wear Daily, the fashion bible if you were serious about the business,” says Johnson Rice, “and I remember she talked about André’s stories and told my father we needed to hire this fantastic man.” For Talley, timing was everything. He had just resigned from WWD, departing their Paris bureau, and returning to New York. As he writes in his book, “My family did not read Women’s Wear Daily at all, nor would they even know where to purchase that publication. But they all subscribed to and read the monthly Ebony, as well as Jet, a weekly publication that addressed the black community on a national basis.”
WORDS BY LAURA LAYFER TREITMAN
Talley fondly recalls their flights abroad via the Concorde, hotel stays at the Plaza Athenee, fancy French cuisine dinners, and jaunts after to London, Rome, and Florence. “Mrs. Johnson treated me like family,” says Talley, “I never had a boss like her.” “That was my mother,” laughs Johnson Rice, “she knew what she liked and how she wanted it done, but she was never going to ask you to do something different from what she would for herself.”

When Talley joined in the ’80s, Mrs. Johnson was already a front row fixture at couture shows, a top client of European as well as American fashion houses. She sought theatrical runway looks that would translate drama and aspirational dreams on stage for the Ebony Fashion Fair, touring multiple cities throughout the United States from 1958 to 2009. “You have to understand that there was also a genius marketing component, not only fashion,” points out Johnson Rice, “every ticket sold benefited an African-American charity and included a magazine subscription, building our publication outreach.” Today, it is the meaning behind it all that sustains. Mrs. Johnson knew clothing wasn’t frivolous, rather it was foundational to giving black men and women a view of possibility, potential, and power. “My mother was a visionary,” says Johnson Rice, the same sentiments echoed by Talley, “this was Mrs. Johnson’s strength, she was a pioneer.”
A Southerner like Talley, Mrs. Johnson was born in Selma, Alabama, to a well-educated family, her father a surgeon and her mother a high school principal. She pursued multiple degrees in art, sociology, social work, and even sewing and tailoring. “There was a Picasso hanging in the living room and Mrs. Johnson would still go into the kitchen and bake her favorite pound cake,” recalls Talley, citing that “soul cooking” as insight to Mrs. Johnson’s ability to stay true to herself amidst any surrounding, or adversity. “She might purchase a jacket for over $50,000 from a fashion house, but not receive an invite to their party that evening,” recalls Johnson Rice, of the triumph her mother overcame by always recognizing that her job, like any other, had obstacles and conflicts to rise above. Mrs. Johnson paid upfront and in full with checks, whereas Talley comments “other patrons might ask for adjustments on the price tag or simply take an invoice to be billed months later. “I think she was able to see the forest beyond the trees,” states Talley, reminiscing about a story from the early ’70s when he worked at the Met and they needed funding to include entertainer Josephine Baker in the American Women of Style exhibition. Mrs. Vreeland, at Talley’s encouragement, wrote to Mrs. Johnson for financial support. “Within a week of the request, money arrived to cover the installation costs, no questions asked,” exclaims Talley, “Mrs. Vreeland couldn’t believe it!” “They had a bond, a simpatico, through a mutual respect and admiration of beauty,” says Johnson Rice, of her mother’s relationship with Talley. He knew she trusted and valued his eye, and furthered her connections to designers she frequented such as Yves Saint Laurent, Lagerfeld, Oscar de la Renta, and Stephen Burrows, among others.
In Talley’s 2017 documentary, The Gospel According to André (now available on Amazon Prime and Hulu), he speaks of “aristocracy without being born into royalty,” no doubt the iconic Mrs. Johnson a fitting example. Talley’s upcoming projects include an idea for a third book, potential collaborations with Apple TV and Black Entertainment Television, and his valued partnership with the Savannah College of Art and Design where he was awarded an honorary doctorate and Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000, the latter later named in his honor. Johnson Rice is an Executive Producer in the film business now working on documentaries, the President of the Chicago Public Library, and on the Board of the Art Institute of Chicago (her mother was on the Women’s Board and her father a Life Trustee). Her daughter Alexa interned for Talley at Vogue a few years ago making the relationship truly multi-generational. “I remember attending the Pierre Cardin show in Paris with my mother and there was no seat for me as the little girl tagging along,” says Johnson Rice, “so they put me back where the models entered and exited, and I can still hear the “swoosh” of the fabric that I loved as figures strutted onto the catwalk.” The memory of that sound, perhaps a metaphor for the impact Mrs. Johnson and Talley, individually and briefly together, made loud and clear for the history of fashion, each working their way through, as Talley’s book appropriately titles it, The Chiffon Trenches.
The Chiffon Trenches is available locally at The Book Stall in Winnetka, 847-446-8880 and at Lake Forest Book Store, 847-234-4420. To learn more about the André Leon Talley gallery at SCAD Museum of Art, visit scadmoa.org.

Chicago’s Erin McCarthy and Mindy Turitz launch MERINDA STUDIO, a textile company inspired by nature.

At a time when we are coveting a sense of tranquility, MERINDA STUDIO offers interior decor aimed at bringing the outdoors in. Launched by two Chicago women, Erin McCarthy and Mindy Turitz, MERINDA STUDIO (a combination of their first names) livens up one’s home with their nature-inspired decor.
From their washable wallpaper to digitally printed fabrics, each design is inspired by McCarthy’s nature photography, which stems from her Southern California upbringing. As a young girl, she was heavily influenced by the ocean, mountains, and desert topography.
“I definitely think that what I soaked up as a child comes out in my artwork now,” McCarthy explains. “I grew up spending a lot of time outdoors, and always had a great interest in nature.”
McCarthy previously worked as a fine arts photographer before the revelation that her photographs could be translated into surface designs. It became a natural progression to partner with Turitz who has
a business degree, background in fashion and home decor, and previous experience in the retail industry.
“One of the main reasons we started this business is because we felt like we found a hole in the market,” McCarthy says. “We wanted to create an affordable designer product of really good quality.”
McCarthy’s nature photography sets MERINDA STUDIO apart from other fabric designers who typically use illustrations or paintings as the foundation for their textiles.
“I take a lot of nature walks, and I will find a leaf that I think is interesting or a branch or a flower, and I will bring it into my studio, photograph it, and then the rest is created digitally,” McCarthy explains.
Another compelling pillar of the company reflects the duo’s desire to create products suitable for daily family life, which often includes young children and pets.
“We want to create things that can withstand messy hands and wet dog tails and yet still be stylish,” Turitz says.
The collection is designed and created domestically and responsibly produced with ecologically-safe inks versus chemical dyes. MERINDA STUDIO also prints orders on demand in an effort to reduce landfill waste and conserve water.

“We both have an affinity for nature, and are both eco-conscious, so we found like-minded printers, and chose local or U.S. based manufacturers in an effort to limit our carbon footprint,” Turitz explains.
In addition to their array of pre-designed choices, MERINDA STUDIO offers a Trade Program for designers, at no additional fee or delivery delay. The program includes a customization of current designs to meet a designer’s specifications, with options to do a color match or alter the scale to provide something original for their clients.
The Fall 2020 collection, which launched in August, features a kaleidoscope of florals layered with textured neutrals. The line ranges from matte wallpaper digitally printed in Chicago to linen-cotton blend fabric pillow covers, napkins, tea towels, and more. The anticipation is that the collection will be well received with seasonal colors such as corals, teals, gold, rust, and burnt orange.
“It is definitely inspired by my childhood in Southern California, and it has got a little bit of a ’70s, but maybe more of a patterned chinoiserie look to it,” McCarthy says. “We are taking a deep dive into what we think are going to be color trends for the fall.”
Just a year following the launch of their textile com-
pany, they have already received tremendous support and advice from other small business owners within the community. “It has been a really supportive environment,” Turitz says. “Maybe that’s a little bit of the Midwestern values of Chicago, and maybe that’s being two women and meeting other people in the industry but it has been so welcoming and very inspiring.”

BONE HEALTH, OSTEOPOROSIS, AND OSTEOPENIA
WORDS BY CHIRAG PATEL, MD PHOTOGRAPHY BY FRANK ISHMAN
As we all age through life, our bodies evolve and change. One aspect is our bone health, its steady deterioration, complications from reduced bone health, and the treatments currently available.
Osteopenia is considered the beginning of bone density loss. When osteopenia worsens to a measurable point, it changes to osteoporosis. Our bones are the densest at around 30 years of age. About 10 million Americans have osteoporosis and another 34 million are at risk. One of three women and one in five men 50 and older will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their lifetime.
Those that are diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis are typically over 50 years of age. Younger patients with bone thinning usually have a genetic predisposition or are taking medication with bone density loss as a side effect. Other risk factors include gender, ethnicity, age, body size, diet, lifestyle, smoking, and alcohol consumption.
Osteoporosis is diagnosed by a bone density scan, which is typically performed in primary care offices or hospital radiology departments. A certain T-score will determine if your bones are normal for your
age, have osteopenia, or have worsened to osteoporosis. It is important to screen for this condition, as it is preventable and treatable, reducing future fracture risk.
Things to prevent osteoporosis include a healthy diet with calcium and vitamin D supplement, maintaining a healthy body weight—BMI greater than 19, regular weight bearing exercise, and avoid habits like smoking and heavy drinking.
Medications used for treatment include Bisphosphonates (alendronate, risedronate, ibandronate, zoledronic acid), Raloxifene and bazedoxifene, Teriparatide and abaloparatide, Denosumab, Romosozumab, Menopausal Hormone Therapy (MHT).

FROM WRITER TO REALTOR
Louise Eichelberger turned her skills as a journalist into a long and successful career in real estate on the North Shore.
WORDS BY MITCHELL HURST PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR
Louise Eichelberger was covering politics for Newsweek magazine out of its Atlanta bureau in the early ’80s when her husband, Harry Eichelberger, accepted a job offer in Chicago. She didn’t know it then, but she would eventually become one of the top-selling real estate brokers on the North Shore.
“I had a friend who lived on the North Shore and her advice was to live as close to the lake as you can to walk to it or ride your bicycle or take a short drive to it,” Eichelberger says. “We both grew up going to the beach—The Atlantic—but we liked that big lake with those beaches the first time we saw it.”
With two young preschoolers at home, Eichelberger didn’t want to continue her journalism career, which would have meant traveling or heading each day to a downtown office. Having always had an interest in architecture, she eventually obtained her real estate license and was off to the races. As it turns out, journalism skills come in handy when it comes to working with real estate clients.
“It’s interesting when people find out my background was in journalism and that I worked for Newsweek for years they kind of look puzzled and they don’t understand how that can translate to a business career in real estate,” says Eichelberger. “If you can listen to people and ask good questions and be quiet long enough there are plenty of correlations.”
Eichelberger was the founding and managing broker for Village Green Realty in Winnetka, a market leader for 20 years, between 1988 and 2008, and is now with @properties. She started her career in real estate well before the industry exploded on the Internet and says the practice of managing and communicating information, an important skill for journalists, is also important in the real estate world.
“In an ironic way, this abundance of information about real estate doesn’t make it any easier,” she says. So many people move here from the city or have lived here for a while and are making a change but they don’t really know about the different villages on the North Shore.”
Like any good journalist, Eichelberger brings an objective approach to real estate work. Her family has bought houses and lived in Kenilworth, Winnetka, and Glencoe (where she currently resides). Both of her sons played hockey at New Trier High School and one now lives in Wilmette. She brings a well-rounded
viewpoint for any family looking to move, upsize, or downsize in the area.
“I do have a breadth of knowledge about the area so you can ask me about the preschools and the curriculum, about the park districts,” she says. “You can ask me about what $600,000, $1.5 million, or $2.2 million will buy. I know these communities.”
Eichelberger’s approach to working with clients combines her experience in the old school, pre-Internet days of the real estate business with new technology, in her case much of it supported by @properties.
“I’ve transitioned from the old school of real estate to the new school of real estate and it’s been quite a path. Agents were just getting started and they put their images and their reviews and their pictures and everything all across the Internet,” she says. “You’re talking to a lady who did not have a headshot taken until I had been in the business for 20 years.”
Longevity, and the knowledge gained over time living in different communities on the North Shore, give Eichelberger a unique edge.
“It’s nice to have been involved in this business for this long and it is especially nice right now to find that the experiences that I have and the knowledge that I have is so useful to people as they make a dynamic change in their lives,” she explains.
Louise Eichelberger is with @properties, 30 Green Bay Road in Winnetka, 847-612-3347, atproperties.com/agents/LouiseEichelberger.

Plastic Surgery Update: I HATE EXERCISING
Ido it but I hate it. What if you could achieve the results while lying down? Interested?
We are excited to introduce CoolTone to our practice. This technology will bring a new dimension to help patients achieve their body contouring goals of improving muscle strength and tone.
CoolTone is the latest device to be introduced by CoolSculpting the leader in non-invasive fat reduction. CoolTone’s magnetic muscle stimulation or MMS technology penetrates into the muscle layers and induces involuntary muscle contractions. The body’s response to these contractions is to strengthen its muscle fibers resulting in improved muscle conditioning. After treatments, the abdomen will be firmer and have a more defined and tone appearance. Buttocks will have a more toned appearance and will be firmer.
CoolTone has 50 percent more magnetic intensity than the leading competitor. With the backing of Allergan I expect it to become the gold standard.
Typical protocols are four sessions over a two-week period. Results are immediate. There is no downtime. CoolTone can be combined with CoolSculpting or after liposuction to achieve that athletic toned appearance. CoolTone can also be a standalone procedure in that individual who is already in good shape but wants more definition.
Typical treatments only take a half-hour. CoolTone combined with CoolSculpting is an excellent combination to get rid of your COVID extra pounds. As part of our introduction of this exciting technology we are offering it at a substantial discount.

EDITH ON THE NORTH SHORE
Author Andrea Friederici Ross delves into the life and times of Lake Forest’s Edith Rockefeller McCormick.
WORDS BY ANDREA FRIEDERICI ROSS / ILLUSTRATION BY ROBERT RISKO
In the summer of 1913, Lake Forest was hopping. At Villa Turicum—the McCormick mansion north of Fort Sheridan—Harold Fowler McCormick was hosting flying parties. Visitors donned cork jackets over their bathing suits and up they went in the Edith, one of the nation’s only aeroboats. Named after McCormick’s wife, oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller’s daughter, the Edith was flying in large part because its namesake was out of the country.
Harold and Edith (Rockefeller) McCormick were among the nation’s richest couples at the time of their 1895 wedding. From their home at 1000 Lake Shore Drive, they were a major force in cultural Chicago: helping to establish a resident opera company, founding an infectious diseases institute and journal, and providing the land that started Brookfield Zoo. The power couple used their money and influence to elevate Chicago intellectually and culturally.
Like many of Chicago’s elite, they built a summer home in Lake Forest, near the property owned by Harold’s brother and International Harvester partner, Cyrus McCormick, Jr. Sitting on a 300-acre lot, Villa Turicum (Celtic for “settlement on water”) perched on high bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan.
Building Villa Turicum hadn’t been easy. After dismissing designs from James Gamble Rogers and Frank Lloyd Wright—with Edith refusing to even glance at Wright’s sketches—they settled on architect Charles Adams Platt. It took four years and nearly $5 million (the equivalent of $26 million today), but when finished, it was a masterpiece of Italian design. Of the 44 rooms in the main house, 13 were identical master bedrooms, differing only in color. The supporting buildings held 28 rooms for gardeners, 29 for visiting chauffeurs, and a 21-car garage. There were polo grounds and stables, a bowling green, a tea house, and abundant gardens. An elaborate double staircase led down to a beachside swimming pool; those who preferred could take the elevator instead.
But, in 1913, a series of panic attacks and other health issues led Edith to undergo extended analysis with Carl Jung in Switzerland. Jung admitted Edith was a tough nut to crack—calling her brilliant, complicated, and a latent schizophrenic. Edith applied herself wholeheartedly to his practice, becoming not only his leading patroness but also an analyst herself.
With Edith gone, it was a carefree summer for Harold, after years of worrying about her health. Harold came from a long line of tinker-
ers—his ancestors having revolutionized the reaper—and enjoyed the burgeoning sport of aviation, even developing some airplane designs himself. That playful summer, he installed a pilot in Villa Turicum to offer rides in the Edith whenever the weather allowed; The Chicago Tribune society columnist Madame X declared it was the supreme event in her life. Villa Turicum hosted flying parties, tennis and boating events, and dances. And when Harold had to report to the city for work, he did so in style, aero-commuting down the lakefront.
Edith’s stay in Zurich lasted eight years. The Great War intervened, making travel difficult, but really, she felt safe and productive in Switzerland and was loath to return to Chicago’s pressures. Meanwhile, Harold had fallen in love with Ganna Walska, a mediocre opera singer, and a divorce was imminent.
When she did return, Edith brought along a friend: stocky Austrian Edwin Krenn. Together with associate Edward Dato, they started a real estate company to develop affordable middle-class housing. Krenn & Dato purchased thousands of acres along the new rail lines in Chicago and suburbs, including a large swath of land in Skokie, where they built the Devonshire Manor subdivision and the Meadow Lane Garden apartments. Further north, east of the Old Elm Golf Club, Krenn & Dato built the Highland Park Highlands where the houses had an English feel; the street signs still bear their names. But these local efforts paled in comparison to their plans near Kenosha, where the firm designed Edithton, a utopian community. Though Edithton never materialized, the brochure called for lakefront mansions, an airport, and a university campus with sports facilities able to host a future Olympics. She’d had similar high hopes for Lake Forest; drafting plans with Daniel Burnham for pleasure piers, islands, and harbors. And in terms of Villa Turicum, Edith’s intention was to turn it into the Rockefeller McCormick Museum of Lake Forest.
But her plans were all scuttled. Edith died of cancer in 1932, at age 59, bankrupt. The stock market crash three years earlier, plus her crippling divorce settlement, spelled financial disaster. Though many of her lofty plans never came to be, she left a grand legacy of homes and stories from the North Shore to the city and beyond.

The residences of the Tribune Tower are part of one of the world’s most fascinating historical exhibits. Colonel McCormick, in his worldwide travels, collected stones to display in the face of the tower. Chicago Tribune correspondents continued the tradition for nearly one hundred years, creating the stone-studded exterior.
