Restaurants partner to help young adults

novasi, an upscale restaurant in Lake Bluff, is partnering with Curt’s Café, a non-profit restaurant and coffee shop in Evanston, to further the Café’s mission of helping at-risk young adults in the Chicago area. Inovasi owner John des Rosiers and Curt’s Café owner Susan Treischmann are expanding the Café’s menu to include dinner in a style and manner that blends the Cafe’s atmosphere and work program with a menu similar to The Other Door, the Inovasi-owned casual restaurant in Lake Bluff. The evening concept at Curt’s Café will be called “la Taqueria” and will open at the original Curt’s location at 2922 Central Street, Evanston in early May and later this year at Curt’s soonto-open second Evanston location, Curt’s Café South. And three Chicago aldermen have expressed interest in having Curt’s Cafe expand to their Continues on page 14

ids hunt for Easter eggs. Adults hunt for wayward golf balls to the right and wayward golf balls to the left. Behold the rites of spring break on the North Shore. In most local school districts, this year’s spring break starts March 27, and students return on April 6. Sportsman’s Country

Club in Northbrook opened its nine- and 18-hole golf courses on March 20. The facility also features a practice range and a miniature golf course, and the numbers in its address — 3535 Dundee Road — are the exact numbers (35-35) any golfer would love to card for a round of 18 holes. “This time of year, right around spring break, people have

cabin fever and are eager to get outside and do things,” says John Billiter, head golf professional at Sportsman’s. Five inches of snow blanketed Sportsman’s on March 23, forcing scratch golfers and duffers to retreat, once again, to the … great indoors. Many North Shore residents have departed for warmer climes, another rite of spring break.

Bird watching Not everybody likes to swing for birdies on golf courses. Some like to grip binoculars, look up and observe chirping, flying birds. Two of the best places to partake in the recreation are at Chicago Botanic Garden (1000 Lake Cook Road, Glencoe) and Middlefork Savanna, a forest preserve in Lake Forest. “Loons of Lake County,” an annual Lake Cook Audubon field trip, starts at 8 a.m., on March 29, near Diamond Lake in Mundelein. Outdoor enthusiasts search for migrating loons and other waterfowl. They travel to other lakes, mostly by car. Bring a spotting scope if you have one, the field trip leaders suggest. You do not have to be a member of the Illinois Audubon Society or the society’s Lake Cook chapter to participate in the event. For more information, visit www.lakecookaudubon.org. Sign up for an activity or two at a park district Not all parents get a spring break. Some have to work. Offerings at park districts allow

parents to drop their kids off at a facility in the morning and pick them up in the afternoon. The length of a day of activities at a park district usually matches the length of a typical school day (9 a.m.-3 p.m.). “Working parents are looking for activities that keep their kids entertained and busy,” says Erin Maassen, manager of marketing and communications at Glencoe Park District. Glencoe Park District offers theme days. Clay Play Day is set for March 30 in the district’s ceramics studio. Nickel City Day will be held on March 31, when spring breakers will head to the arcade and family entertainment center in Northbrook. Each day costs $45 for Glencoe residents and $54 for non-residents. Children (ages 4-13) interested in chess or engineering or sports should consider registering for an activity (or two) at the Wilmette Park District (www. wilmettepark.org). Among the sports offerings are lacrosse, basketball, noncontact football, gymnastics and archery. One of the sports camps — Spring Break Sportsters — accentuates sportsmanship and fun for boys and girls (ages 4-9). Campers get to play soccer, floor hockey, kickball, basketball, Wiffle ball and other sports/activities. “We have a nice mix of activities, a wide variety,” says Continues on page 14

Pulitzer Prize winner to visit Wilmette

he Wilmette Public Library’s One Book Ever ybody Reads program will culminate with a visit by Pulitzer Prize winner Jane Smiley — author of this year’s book “Some Luck” — on April 26. Smiley’s book focuses on

family life on a rural farm in Iowa during the 1920s through the 1950s, and it is the first book in a trilogy about the transition from farming to urban life. Finding a book that interests the entire community is no small task. Soon after the

current One Book is completed, a committee of librarians begins the process of selecting a book for the next year. “We try to find a book we think will resonate with the community,” explained Betty Giorgi, head of adult ser-

vices. The committee reads books, reviews, holds discussions and talks to publishers and literary agents to find the perfect selection. They look for living authors (since the program always includes an author visit), who have a body

of work and a reputation for connecting well with audiences, said Giorgi. Once a book is chosen, a planning committee comprised of four librarians organizes the author visit, the Continues on page 14

ore than 6,000 people were riveted by the backand-for th pressu re during the 10-minute overtime at the Illinois high school state championship at the United Center on Sunday afternoon. Finally, Glenbrook North High School’s Eric Doar placed a perfect pass on the stick of Joe Day. He lifted a backhand past Benet Academy’s goalie — right in front of a throng of the school’s fans who stood the entire game — to capture the boys’ state crown, 3-2. The thrills didn’t end there. My sons and their two friends, all adorned in their youth hockey jerseys, strode onto the Blackhawks’ home ice for a picture with scores of other young players. No doubt everyone yearned to return there someday wearing the Indian head. The state tournament (spon-

sored in part by the Blackhawks) was the best bargain in Chicago this month. For $5 a ticket and free parking, fans could hear tenor Jim Cornelison sing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” ask 2013 Stanley Cup champion Jamal Mayers to sign one’s jersey, choose any seat in the cavernous arena and enjoy the spectrum of Jumbotron entertainment usually reserved for Blackawks’ games. North Shore notables received awards, such as Tom Miller of the Falcons Hockey Association, named Youth Coach of the Year. And, oh yes, three state championship games (girls, boys, combined) were also included in the price of admission. To win a state title is a stupendous achievement that creates a lifetime of memories. its accomplishment this month, or the 1968 team, which my brother Kirk played on (Chicago Minor Hawks’ parents demanded to see his birth certificate, believing no 14-year-old could be as tall as Bobby Hull). The boys of Glenbrook North — who had lost in the finals the previous two years — will never forget that roar as the title winner struck the net. After hearing story after story from the youngest of criminal offenders all ending with “if I had a job, I wouldn’t have …,” Treischmann saw a need for a program that would help end the spiral of young offenders leading to greater and more dangerous crimes. Curt’s Café trains and integrates at-risk young adults back into society by using foodservice as the tool to teach lessons of hard work and responsibility and contributing to society in a positive way. The café serves homemade pastries and a variety of coffees in the morning, then fresh sandwiches and salads during lunch hours. fter working in the funeral home profession for four and a half decades, Jim Iacubino is ready for the after life. His papers are in order, his burial plot at Lake Forest Cemetery secured. A man of faith, he doesn’t worry about what happens when we leave this world: it’s either up or down, he says with conviction and humor. For Iacubino the problem isn’t the after life – it’s the retired life. He left his position as owner and director of Wenban Funeral Home in Lake Forest in early January, where he worked for 45 years, and already he’s tired of the down time. “I like to read, and I’m also going through 45 years worth of stuff. I sit there with a big garbage can … but I don’t throw much in that garbage can. I don’t know what I will

do with all of these boxes and boxes – and time.” And also – he jokes – “I’m honing my fighting skills with Dorothy, my wife.” Another joke: “Want to know the key to a long, happy marriage? Hearing loss.” (He and Dorothy have been married for 45 years and together for 52, as they began dating when they were 12, he said. They have two grown children and three grand-daughters who all live in the area.) So what’s next for a man who helped three, sometimes four generations of local families navigate their darkest hours? Iacubino knows so many people in Lake Forest, Lake Bluff and the surrounding suburbs that when he was working he often could write a death notice without even first talking to the family. So many times, the people he buried were not just clients;

they were friends. “I really love people,” he said, looking back. “The families were coming in to someone who knew them. I would find a way to make them laugh, or mention something I knew about the person who had died. I would listen to the things they were saying. If they were having a hard time realizing this was really happening, or if they were feeling guilty, I would just let them talk. If you listen instead of being mechanical, you know where you need to go.” He also knew when to be quiet, when to let people cry. And he didn’t shy away from reality. “I would tell people don’t expect to get over this in a year. You think you are doing great and then you open a drawer and see something that reminds you, and then it is like it happened yesterday. … I would tell them

to concentrate on the things death can’t take from you. All of the beautiful memories.” Faith is a big part of Iacubino’s life; he helped found and remains an active member of St. Basil Serbian Orthodox Church on Bradley Road in Lake Forest/Mettawa. He is sad that so many people in younger generations don’t belong to churches or practice any type of religion. Faith has sustained him through life and provides peace when he thinks about death. “I believe in the judgment,” he said. “I believe we are accountable for everything we do and say. If we are not sincere in repentance, it sticks.” And then, as he usually does, he lightened the moment: “I told my best friend, just find us a room with a fan in it.” ~Adrienne Fawcett

he Winnetka Park District is moving forward with its $2 million plan to transform Hubbard Woods Park. In a 5-1 vote the Winnetka Village Council approved introduction of the Park District’s request for a special use permit, though it cannot be formally approved until April. Over the past 18 months, the Park District has been working with the Village and community groups to develop plans that would improve Hubbard Woods, a 1 1/2 acre park located on Green Bay Road near the train station. The Park District plans include replacing the ex-

isting shelter with a new pavilion that will include bathroom facilities, a new playground with a splash pad, improved pedestrian pathways and enhanced landscaping. While the Park District originally planned to defray the $2 million price tag with a roughly $400,000 grant from the state, Gov. Bruce Rauner has currently suspended those funds. “We are hopeful we will get those dollars released,” said Park District Executive Director Robert Smith. Smith reassured the Council that the Park District is nonetheless able to fully fund the project if the grant is not released.

The Park District’s plans will provide extensive upgrades to the park, without disturbing mature trees and with an eye to helping with the Village’s downtown business re-development. But Trustee Richard Kates, the only council member to vote against the special use permit, expressed concern that relocating the playground from its current northwest location to the southeast corner of the park would hurt local businesses. Kates worried that the new amenities would draw crowds and cause parking problems. Hubbard Woods business owner Mike Meyer was also concerned that the playground

location would hurt his dry cleaning business, Greener Cleaner, because customers would have trouble parking. Trustee Carol Fessler supported the special use permit but took issue with the design of the pavilion. “I just have to say I am disappointed with the structure itself,” she said. Viewing the park as the “front door” of Winnetka, Trustee Fessler asked the Park District to reconsider its architectural design. Midlife crisis turns into a reboot By Sabina Sullivan

ianne Bischoff James “had it all:” her own marketing company, a busy family life with her husband and three kids, and a home in the North Shore suburbs. However, the Glencoe resident was depressed, overweight, bored in her marriage — and suffered an innate feeling that the path she had chosen was the wrong one. A fateful 38th birthday present, a visit to psychic and New York Times best-selling author Sonia Choquette, changed everything. Choquette confirmed Bischoff James’ fears that her life was modeled after her parents’ desires and urged her to “grab the real brass ring” before it was too late. Bischoff James spent the next decade reinventing her life, a journey detailed in her book “The Real Brass Ring,” published by Turning Stone Press in 2013. It has sold more than 1,000 copies in print.

“I had to undo the American Dream and rebuild it step by step,” says Bischoff James, who graduated magna cum laude from Northwestern University with a masters of science in integrated marketing communications after receiving a bachelor of arts in psychology from Marquette University. She left her unsatisfying marriage and found new love, lost 50 pounds, and crafted a career that combined her background in marketing with her passions for theater, writing, and metaphysics. Now a Screen Actors Guild actor, author, and motivational speaker, she uses her story to help others. She created her own job title, midlife reboot specialist, and founded Live Your Everything (www.liveyoureverything.com), a web resource for middle-aged people seeking to rediscover their true purpose. Under a sign proclaiming “The witch is in,” Bischoff James described her philosophy over Skype.

“I like to communicate large, overarching ideas in a very simple, clean, clear way,” she says. “I have the 14 rules which I call the Shortcuts for Happy Living, and they have helped me change my life immensely.” These rules, which she drafted at the beginning of her own midlife reboot, focus on selfcare and positive thinking. Bischoff James is candid about the financial realities of rebooting. She struggled with bills during the recession and faced the repercussions of buying a dream home that required costly repairs. “You might have to get a day job,” she explains. “There’s the passion track and the financial track. Sometimes the passion track and the financial track are one and sometimes they run parallel. And sometimes they intersect and sometimes they separate.” Her average work day is busy. “I do everything, still. I’m still very involved with the kids... I also have been touring all over the country. I do some

marketing work for clients. I wear a lot of hats.” When asked about burnout, she replies, “I’m fortunate in that I have a lot of energy and I

harly Beeson discovered her aptitude for connecting with special needs students while volunteering at Committee Representing Our Young Adults (CROYA) in Lake Forest “There was a girl there who had cerebral palsy,” Beeson says. “I was just drawing with her and we talked for awhile. Then Joanne (CROYA program manager) said that I worked really well with her, and she recommended different clubs.” Beeson, now a senior at Lake Forest High School (LFHS), has been working with students with special needs — such as those with Down syndrome, autism, or social issues — for the last two years. As an executive board member with Scout Buddies, a friendship club at LFHS, she and other students pair up

with special needs students to participate in games, arts and crafts, and social activities. “For example, yesterday, we had a meeting where we decorated pots and then planted seeds in soil,” Beeson says. “We buddy up and have conversations, keep them involved, and have them use full sentences.” As a teacher’s assistant for the Integrated Wellness class, she works with special education students four days a week, facilitating a combination of physical activities like basketball and Educational Life Skills (ELS) with students and peer mentors. The ELS portion of the program delves into applying practical skills in the real world. In cooking units, they make their own pizzas or holiday cookies. They cook a whole Thanksgiving feast at the end of November. Special needs individuals aren’t always comfortable interacting with new people, so a

portion of Integrated Wellness is devoted to guiding students into situations where they have to encounter new environments and situations. Beeson has accompanied many ELS students as they go around to different local businesses, introduce themselves, and talk about a specific cause for which they are raising money. This year’s cause was Hope For Lexi. “That foundation is a local family, the Johnson’s,” says Beeson. “Two of their daughters have been diagnosed with cancer. Lexi currently needs to go through chemotherapy, which is why we chose them to raise money for.” Beeson also works with the Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association, an organization dedicated to enriching the lives of people with disabilities through quality recreation activities. She works with Camp Hope, an organization that provides summer

camp for children and young adults with developmental disabilities. She works to develop useful skill sets for working with people with anger issues taking Crisis Prevention Institute training and those with

language barriers by learning sign language. Come autumn, she intends to pursue a degree in special education at Appalachian State University in North Carolina. “Really, I can’t see myself

doing anything else,” she says. “Building a personal relationship with someone and seeing them grow socially and develop a skill is one of the greatest things I’ve ever done. That’s what I want to do with my life.”

A dusting of meat? Ay, there’s the rub

hen Jeff Shapiro first experienced Memphis-style ribs in the 1980s, it was love at first sight — and taste. “The BBQ bug kind of pinched me back then,” says Shapiro. Now, after bringing his mouthwatering discovery to Highland “Pork,” the kitchen meathead, pit master, and half

Real Urban Barbecue — get it? R-U-B —specializes in authentic, wood-fired BBQ. Its menu features homemade BBQ sauces and slow-smoked items like burnt ends, award-winning ribs, pulled pork, turkey, brisket,

and chicken. All of it is slowly rotated on four Cookshack smokers capable of smoking 1,600 pounds — or the maximum loading capacity of a UHaul trailer — of meat a day. But the dusting of such meat is crucial. “Our rub starts with a foundation of dark brown sugar and turbinado sugar,” notes Shapiro. “The idea behind the rub . . . it has lots of particulates in it.” These include kosher sea salt, cinnamon, black pepper, and the turbinado sugar — medium brown in color and “more crystalized,” with “bigger pieces” than the sugar that you would pour in your coffee. “When you bite into that seasoning, you’re going to get a little crunch in your mouth on top of the smoke and the soft meat,” notes Shapiro. His advice for grill masters itching to get back into grilling season after shoveling the snow off the deck and dusty the cobwebs off the grill? “The tidbit is don’t rush it — it’s all about ‘low and slow,’ “ or low temperatures, slow cooking. “And that’s really what smoking a great BBQ is about,” adds Shapiro. “You don’t want to rush anything. We like to say ‘perfection takes time.’ ”

Theater Review A powerful portrayal of Anne Frank’s tragic life BY JILL SODERBERG

f ever Writers Theatre has harnessed the power of its small back-of-the-book-store stage to intensify the dramatic experience of the audience, it is with its current production of “The Diary of Anne Frank.” The audience encounters Jack Magaw’s immersive set even before being seated; an usher guides theatergoers through a bookcase that swings inward to a passageway leading to the secret annex behind Otto Frank’s workplace. Early on, the rules are specified: no W.C., no running water, no talking, and no shoes from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. when workers are in the warehouse. Breaking the rules could mean Nazi detection, a point well understood by my fellow audience members recently, quiet as can be in shared confinement with the hiding families. Director Kimberly Senior has assembled a distinguished ensemble cast to portray the ordeal of the Frank family and the four others who hid for two years in an Amsterdam attic after the Nazis invaded the Netherlands

in 1940. While Anne Frank’s diary personalized the Nazi threat and the horrors of the Holocaust when it was published in 1947, the Writers Theatre production, Wendy Kesselman’s adaptation of the original stage play by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, dramatizes the loss anew, bringing to the stage the details of persecution. Anne speaks of the antiJewish decrees in effect before her family went into hiding. “Jews must wear a yellow star, Jews must hand in their bicycles, Jews are banned from trams and are forbidden to drive. Jews are only allowed to do their shopping between three and five o’clock and then only in shops which bear the placard ‘Jewish shop’…. Our freedom was strictly limited. Yet things were still bearable.” But when the threat of deportation intensified in l942, Otto Frank (Sean Fortunato), aided by two righteous Christians, Miep Gies (Leah Karpel) and Mr. Kraler (Coburn Goss), leads his family into hiding. The Franks are joined by another family, the van Daans, and a

dentist, Mr. Dussel (Kevin Gudahl). Sophie Thatcher is the talented 14-year-old actor playing the legendary diarist close to her own age, as adept at presenting Anne, the annoying chatterbox, as she is rendering the anguished teenager in conflict with her mother. Kristina Valada-Viars as Edith Frank likewise succeeds in conveying the duality of a mother’s neverfailing love for the difficult Anne as well as her extreme frustration. Anne’s sister Margot (Lila Morse) is “the good one” in contrast to the mercurial Anne. Clearly, emotions are heightened by the challenging circumstances. Mrs. van Daan (Heidi Kettenring) loses control when her husband (Lance Baker) insists they sell the fur coat that was a gift from her father; yet when tempers flare at Mr. van Daan’s theft of bread in the night, she shows unexpected warmth. “If you are hungry, Putti, hold onto me,” she tells him. Their shy son, Peter (Antonio Zhiurinskas), at first scorned by Anne, later becomes her romantic interest.

We know how this story ends, and the script includes an epilogue in which Otto Frank, the sole survivor, tells the fate of the people we, in our shared space, have come to know intimately in the span of just over an hour and a half. When Sean Fortunato as Otto Frank, with a fa-

Should we carry secrets to the grave?

was attending a funeral in Skokie recently when the rabbi remembered the deceased gentleman in a most unusual way. The deceased and his late wife

loved to keep secrets from each other, the rabbi told the congregants, and they delighted in bringing their two daughters into the game.

“What?” the congregants seemed to think in unison, as the swiftly raised eyebrows caused a noticeable draft in the room. We all knew the couple to be one of the best paired, most happily married on the North Shore; theirs was a marriage we envied. Keeping secrets in a marriage is universally panned by magazine covers and daytime talk shows alike as a shortcut to divorce. The idea that the rabbi would raise their marital secrets at this gentleman’s funeral was absurd. Consider the research: a team representing the University of Tennessee and East Carolina University in 2012 studied the topic and found as much about the secrets we keep as about the people who keep them. It considered a true secret to be one that “directly affects or concerns the individual but is withheld from the partner.” It also found in the study that the people most likely to be keeping secrets from their partners were women, married people, and African-Americans. Far more interesting to me were the reasons people keep secrets, as discussed on the Psychology Today blog in 2014. Not surprisingly, the main reason for keeping secrets is to avoid damaging a relationship. Nobody wants to feel their partner’s disapproval when they admit to acting counter to their partner’s wishes. Next comes the feeling of shame, when your

partner loses faith in you because of your offenses. So what did we hear about at that Skokie funeral? It was a story that made us love the mourning family even more. It seems that as a young mother in Glencoe, the deceased’s late wife was known to take their daughters for ice cream on summer afternoons. She made them promise not to tell their father.

Hours later, after the deceased had returned from work and enjoyed dinner with his family, he’d tell his wife that he was taking their girls for a drive. They invariably ended up at the ice cream parlor, where he would make his daughters promise not to tell their mother of their shared treat. This went on for years, the girls’ daily double dip the best-kept secret in Glencoe. They confessed to their

dad only after their mother’s death some 20 years later. The congregants chuckled last week (which the deceased would have appreciated at his funeral), finally in on the long-held family secret. Contact Love & Marriage columnist Joanna Brown at Joanna@northshoreweekend.com.

Cusick, Loyola Academy fall one goal short in riveting state title game

aggie Cusick, known for her speed and stick-toitiveness, drew the tough assignment. The Loyola Academy junior was given the dicey — and icy — task of “shadowing” Latin School’s Grace Zarzecki. Her job was to keep this jet on ice from taking off and wrecking a perfectly fine Sunday morning at the United Center. “It was,” said LA head coach Conor Sedam, “a thankless job.” Duly noted. Fully embraced. “Not a glamorous job,” said Cusick, an all-state defenseman and three-year starter for the Ramblers. “But an important one.” Cusick and her teammates pretty much held Z Force — Zarzecki — in check, but they ultimately came up just short in the 2015 Illinois State High School Championship on March 22. Latin (22-5-4) managed to withstand LA’s late flurry and walk away with a 4-3 victory. “One more minute,” said LA junior Emma Wright, another all-stater. “If we had had one more minute, we might have been able to take it.” The ending was … frenetically entertaining. In the final 2:31 of the contest, Latin scored once, while Loyola scored twice on clean — and magical — goals by super sophomores Tess Dettling and Valerie Caldwell. “Crazy,” Wright said. “It was exciting, but we had to make sure we didn’t freak out. We didn’t. We contained our enthusiasm (after LA cut Latin’s lead to 3-2 at 2:31 mark of the third period and to 4-3 with 1:02 left in regulation).” The tension never subsided. In fact, it heightened. Latin goalie Lauren Bennett was bombarded by pucks from all directions until the final horn blasted. Three shots — taken by Cusick, Anne Bloomer and Caldwell — in the final 28 seconds just missed, including one at the doorstep.

“I was scared,” said a hurried Bennett, not breaking stride as she walked on her skates through the United Center tunnel on her way to the Latin locker room. “Very scared.” Coming back all of the way would not have surprised Sedam. “We’ve been in worse situations,” said the Loyola coach, who guided his team to a 20-6-5 record. “We were down 4-1 (to New Trier) in the Quad Header (in November) and came back and won. It would have been easy for us to give up after we got down 3-1. But we didn’t. Instead, we stepped up. “And when I think back on this game, I will think back to how we played in the final five minutes,” Sedam added. His mind also might race back to a strategic decision. In an effort to pull off the victory, LA pulled its goalie shortly after Dettling’s goal with 2:31 left in the third period cut the deficit to 3-2. “It might’ve have looked like we did that a little early,” said Sedam. “But we wanted to sneak up on them a little.” He wanted to take advantage of the personnel on the ice. Instead, Zarzecki took advantage of the situation and slid in an open-netter from the centerline. Cusick couldn’t do much about that gimme. But she did plenty to curtail the actions of Zarzecki, who was named 2015 Cammie Granato Girls High School Player of the Year. “Going up against a tremendous player like her, I knew I had to be focused,” said Cusick. “I know her, and I know her game. She’s quick on her feet, and she’s got a great all-around game. “I thought it was an honor that my coaches believe in me. That they believe I can stay with a player of her caliber,” she added. Being a defensive stopper is nothing new for Cusick. In last year’s state championship — New Trier edged LA 3-2 in double overtime — her assignment was NT scoring sensation Ivy Dynek.

“Whatever I can do to help my team,” said Cusick. The smart and speedy Zarzecki, who will skate next year for Harvard University, presents the opposition with a myriad set of problems. She possesses drone-like accuracy, which accounts for her 34 goals and four assists in 19 games played for the 21-5-3 Romans. “Grace is an amazing player,” said Dettling. “It’s hard to put into words how amazing she is.” Zarzecki was at her finest midway through the first period, when she cut a figure eight down the right side and smacked a laser past LA goalie Tianna Lavalle. She later assisted the second of two goals by Latin’s other allstate selection, sophomore Kendra Nealey.

No doubt, shadowing Zarzecki placed an added burden on Cusick. She was tagged with two penalties. “When you pressure the other team’s star, everybody knows it. The players, the refs, the crowd,” said Sedam. “And when you do it, you attract extra scrutiny. It doesn’t take much to get in the (penalty) box.” Cusick didn’t take the penalties lightly. “One was stupid. I had my stick above my knees,” she said. “The other one was on a collision. I was being aggressive. Usually, my penalties are being aggressive, not stupid.”

Notable: Penalties certainly were a factor. Loyola finished the game with six trips to the penalty box, compared to Latin’s three.

The Romans’ second goal was scored on a power play. … The big stage at the United Center seems to bring the best out of Dettling, who loves to deliver centering passes. For the second year in a row, she scored a thirdperiod goal in a state title game. Her goal last year, in a loss against New Trier, forced overtime. “I was definitely a little nervous (with the UC atmosphere). But it was a good nervous.” … On LA’s strong finish, Dettling credited the team’s three seniors: Courtney Cheevers, Nicole Matousek and Kathleen O’Connor. “We got a pep talk from our seniors before the third period. They talked about this being the last [14 minutes] of their high school careers. It got us excited, for sure.” Dettling’s third-period

goal on Sunday was her 19th of the season to go along with 10 assists. … Caldwell finished the season with 38 goals and 17 assists … LA freshman Anne Bloomer scored the game’s first goal with 10:13 left in the first quarter. She ended the season with 16 goals and seven assists. By the way, her younger brother, John Bloomer, won the “Shoot the Puck” competition, which was held between periods two and three … LA finished 1-3-1 in its season series with Latin. … Seven Ramblers earned allstate honors: Bloomer, Caldwell, Cheevers, Cusick, Dettling, Lavalle and Wright. … Parting quote: “We’re a young team,” Sedam said at the United Center last weekend. “There’s no reason why we can’t get back here next year.”

New Trier The Trevians (15-11-4) were looking to turn the tables. It didn’t happen. New Trier was eliminated from the postseason on March 17 at The Edge in Bensenville, when it dropped a 5-0 decision to Latin in the state semifinals. Latin beat the reigning state champs four times this season. “I think they’re a great team,” said New Trier head coach Nelson Forsberg. “But I also don’t think tonight’s score reflected how good of a game we played.” Latin broke a scoreless tie in the opening minute of the second period on a goal by all-stater Kendra Nealey on a power play. Then, less than four minutes later, Latin’s other all-stater, Grace Zarzecki, proved why she was named the 2015 AHAI Player of the Year, when she broke free and scored on a breakaway in lightning-quick fashion. “We didn’t panic after they took the 2-0 lead,” said Forsberg. “We tried to jump-start our offense,” the coach added. “The kids kept fighting.” In a seven-minute stretch in the second period, New Trier put six shots on goal. No doubt, plenty was at stake in this one. The game had 10 penalties, including seven by New Trier. Latin scored on two power plays. The Trevians had plenty of standout performers this season, including six all-state selections: seniors Ivy Dynek and Barrett Sullivan; juniors Morgan Baird and Johanna Glaaser; and sophomores Tay Munson and Isabelle Sennett. Dynek, who will play Division I hockey at St. Cloud State, led NT with 29 goals and seven assists. She had 27 goals a year ago. Sennett finished the season with 16 goals and 13 assists. Glaaser had 13 goals and nine assists. And Munson added nine goals and 13 assists.

At the Shoot-Around Boys Basketball

All-State: Evan Boudreaux had a stellar regular season and playoff run. And now, the Lake Forest High School standout is garnering major postseason accolades. The 6-foot-8 senior center, who will play his college ball at Dartmouth, has earned first team all-state recognition by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) and Associated Press. The IBCA released its full list of honorees on its website on March 20. Two Highland Park seniors, Luke Norcia and David Sachs, made special mention along with two Deerfield players: senior guard Joey Lane and junior guard Jordan Baum. The honorable mentions include New Trier senior guard Robbie Abuls, Loyola Academy junior guard Brandon Danowski and Lake Forest senior guard Noah Karras. Boudreaux averaged 24.8 points and 13.6 rebounds per game for the record-setting Scouts. The four-year varsity starter finished his career with 2,077 points and 1,296 rebounds. Karras, who will play at the University of Chicago, averaged 11.6 points per game. He made 69 threepointers — which was two shy of matching the school record set by Mike Liddy during the 2001-02 season. Sachs and Norcia were three-year starters for Highland Park. This season, Sachs, who has been recruited by Division II Barry University, averaged 11.7 points and 3.7 assists per game for the 20-8 Giants. He shot 35 percent from three-point range and 68 percent from the foul line. Norcia, who has narrowed his college choices down to three Division III schools (Carthage College, UWLacrosse and UW-Oshkosh), averaged 11.5 points and 2.5 assists per game. He hit a team-high 53 threes and also led his team in steals (48). Abuls, who will play at DePauw University, led the Trevians to a 20-10 season by averaging a team-best 14.4 points per game. He made 39 percent of his threepointers (52-135) and 77 percent of his foul shots. He

also had a team-best 58 steals. Danowski was the Ramblers’ three-point ace (99-228) and leading scorer (14.0). He shot 72 percent from the foul line for the 17-13 Ramblers. All-NSC: Four Lake Forest players were named to the North Suburban Conference team. Evan Boudreaux, Noah Karras and Lorenzo Edwards were first-team selections. Jack Traynor was honorable mention allconference.  Loyola: The Sixth Annual Spring Basketball Jamboree will be held on April 18 at the school (1100 Laramie, Wilmette). The event is open to players in grades 3-8. The contact person is LA head coach Tom Livatino (847) 920-2654. At the Next Level Men’s College Basketball Amherst: Reid Berman, a former standout guard for New Trier, has transitioned well … in the transition game for Amherst College.  The heady point guard turned in a terrific showing in the opening round of the NCAA Division III tournament on March 6. In a 91-67 victory over Sage, Berman exploded for 28 points on 11 of 14 shooting, including four three-pointers. The sophomore also led the team with six assists. The Jeffs (21-8) were eliminated from the playoffs one night later, when they lost to St. John Fisher 87-70. Berman had eight points and four assists. Berman, who is the all-time assist leader at New Trier, averaged 5.4 assists per game.

Dartmouth: Ex-New Trier star Connor Boehm averaged 9.5 points and 5.1 rebounds for the Big Green (14-15). The starting forward shot 53 percent from the field, including 44 percent from the three-point line. One of his best games came against Ivy League champ, Harvard, on Jan. 10. The 6-foot-7 junior went 4-for-5 from three-point land to finish with 16 points. Ohio Wesleyan: Lake Forest grad Ben Simpson capped off a fine sophomore season by earning All-North Coast Athletic Conference recognition. The guard ended

his season on a high note. The 6-foot-4 guard had a remarkable game in the opening round of the NCAA Division III tournament on March 6 in Whitewater, Wisconsin. In a 90-78 loss to St. Olaf, Simpson hit 10 of 13 shots, including four threes, to lead all scorers with 25 points. He also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with three assists and two steals. Simpson ended up as the Battling Bishops (22-6) third leading scorer (14.3) and top rebounder (7.3). Yale: Lake Forest grad Sam Downey appeared in 25 games and averaged 11.0 minutes per game this season for the 22-10 Bulldogs. The 6-foot-9 sophomore averaged 3.5 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. He shot 48.1 percent from the field and 68.8 percent from the foul line. In game two of the season, he came off the bench to score 18 points in a 97-51 victory over Newbury. He had eight points in 75-48 win over Penn on Feb. 13. Yale just missed earning a berth to the NCAA tournament. The Bulldogs lost to Harvard 53-51 in the Ivy League title game on March 14.

Service Projects Squash Northwestern University: Tasker Peacock, a seventh-grader at Wilmette Junior High, read a book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals, two years ago. He learned all about hunger in the United States. A year later he wrote about the issue for a school assignment. On March 15, at Northwestern University’s Henry Crown Sports Pavilion, Peacock attacked hunger — with a squash racket. The venue served as the site of his cleverly named tournament/fundraiser, SQUASH Hunger. The project satisfied a “Change the World” assignment he had received from his teacher, Alison Gavin. Nineteen other young players battled in a combined two draws and raised more than $1,050, with the tournament fee doubling as a donation. The money went to Feeding America, a nonprofit network of food banks. “We really appreciate his support, both for the funds

and helping raise the awareness of the magnitude of hunger in this country,” Feeding America CEO Bob Aiken said in a statement. “By raising funds and awareness, Tasker is part of the solution. How wonderful for a boy of his age to be interested in helping us to solve this challenge.” Tasker placed fourth in the tourney’s Elite division, won by Obi Okoloi of Vernon Hills. Winnetkan Emma Carter finished runner-up. Chicagoan Alec McAfee defeated George Peacock of Wilmette in the U13 final. Tennis Lake Bluff: Lake Forest High School’s boys varsity tennis program plans to conduct a tennis clinic for children of all ages and abilities at the Racquet Club of Lake Bluff on April 11 (6-8 p.m.). Varsity Scouts players will instruct, conduct drills and supervise games on the courts. The second annual community service project will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Institute. Give him a hand for 49 national titles By Simon Murray

now lies atop McDonald’s roof and golden arches in Lake Forest. It blankets everything but a thin strip of shoveled sidewalk, cutting a winding path to the entrance. Inside, Mike Dau is partaking in his weekly morning ritual. When he’s not enjoying his wife Paula’s Swedish pancakes, he gets together with Franz Schulze, the most widely published campus author in Lake Forest College’s history. The two men grab a coffee and chat; one a retired art professor, the other the school’s coach of one of the most obscure sports in the country: handball. Dau — who will turn 80 this year — says he gets messages each year from all over the world. In effect, every letter says the same thing: We understand Lake Forest College has a scholarship for handball. And every year Dau is compelled to reply with his already prepared stock answer: “I’m sorry to tell you,” he writes, “but we play with a ball the size of a golf ball.” They don’t usually write back. “They think we’re playing team handball,” adds Dau, referring to the Olympic sport with a 32-panel leather ball. “We got a team, but we ain’t playing team handball.” Instead, the Foresters play a

game in which players use their hands to hit a small rubber ball against a wall. Like backgammon, the roots of such a game extend far back. In 2000 B.C., priests were depicted in the temple of Osiris in Thebes letting off steam by striking a ball with the hand. In “The Odyssey,” Homer refers to a game invented by a Spartan princess: “O’er the green mead the sporting virgins play, their shining veils unbound along the skies, tossed and retossed, the ball incessant flies.”

But even with the invention of the wooden racket and its technologically advanced children, the game of handball has continued to thrive in various spots. Next year will be Dau’s 48th year as head coach of the Foresters, who recently returned from Portland after winning the U.S. Handball Association’s National Collegiate Championships. Sweeping all three titles — men’s, women’s, and combined team — brings Dau’s national title count to 49. Move over, Urban Meyer. “We don’t have a whole lot of friends in the intercollegiate community,” jokes Dau. The reason being Lake Forest — a private college of just under 1,600 students — repeatedly whips the much larger schools, including the University of Texas, Texas A&M, Missouri State, and Minnesota State. At this point, those universities might have to wait for Dau to retire to grab a crown. And unfortunately for the players and coaches of those universities, Dau has zero plans to do so in the near future. “When they put me in the grave,” he notes. In 1958, handball was nonexistent at Lake Forest College when Dau, an alumnus, graduated with All-America honors in football. A friend introduced

Their feats have the sound of legend; the most unbelievable being Paul Haber playing then racquetball champion Dr. Bud Muehleisen. During the exhibition match, Muehleisen used a racquetball racket, Haber his gloved hands. After three games, Haber was victorious. (“Paul told me after the game it was the most exhausting experience of his life,” says Dau.) What’s the secret to your success? I ask Dau. Cryptically, he replies: “Weight transfer.” (As in: the organization of players’ bodies before engaging with the ball.) But of course that answer belies this fact. Before moving back to the North Shore, I spent many years as a principal dancer with the Hawaii Ballet Theater. Subsequently, I received my BFA in Drama & Theater from the University of Hawaii.
