Story remains key for students using top-notch technology

his spring, Apple announced that Steve Douglass, the new media teacher at Lake Forest High School, was awarded a place among the Apple Distinguished Educators, a community who use Apple technology to innovate in the classroom. When Douglass started teaching telecom at LFHS 10 years ago, the most top-of-the-line equipment the students had access to were three low-grade mini-dv cameras. A tour through the new media department these days is a different story. Fifteen Mac Pro towers and monitors capable of handling 4K footage (which is what we see in movie theaters) line the wall. Next to this is a room with a green screen wall and a selection of LED lights rigged to the ceiling. Students have access to 15 HD Canon cameras that shoot using lenses that provide a soft, cinematic depth of field. These kids have everything they need to make a full-blown movie. Though the technology is
outstanding, Douglass still emphasizes that the most important element is a well-told story. “I think it is so important for kids to contextualize what they’re going through, especially in adolescence, but also throughout life,” Douglass says. “I wanted to figure out a way for them to do that by leveraging the iPhone, which is such an amazing piece of equipment.” With the help of Jonathan Kelly of Lake Bluff, the chief technology officer for MightyN, Douglass designed an iPhone app called showNtell, which offers students an easy fill-in the-blanks approach to crafting a two-minute personal story and outputting it as a well-produced video. Following one of several pre-written scripts in the app, users fill in blanks about a subject of their choosing, Mad-Lib style. They then read the script off of their phone as if it’s a teleprompter, recording the narration audio. Douglass’s New Media students have cracked the code on crafting

he Wilmette Board of Trustees addressed two land-use cases on May 26 where both applicants sought variances for construction projects that previously received a negative recommendation from the Zoning Board of Appeals.
In the first case, the Village Board voted unanimously to overturn the Zoning Board decision where an applicant sought zoning variances to build a two-car garage. Trustee Dan Sullivan noted that the main hardship to the applicant was simply the small lot size, which forced the applicant to seek variances to build an
average size garage. Trustee Carol Ducommun agreed. “I don’t think it is unreasonable to request a 20-by-22 foot garage. I think it is a narrow lot and this is the best they can do,” she said. While the board was quick to decide for the applicant concerning the two-car garage, the second case
involving the construction of a new split-level house took the board considerably longer. In that case, the applicant sought a variance to raise a portion of the house’s first floor to five feet, from the maximum allowed four feet, in order to build the footings and Continues on page 12

FIRST WORD
road less traveled spurs novel
David Sweet

uring Grove Mower’s 10-day residency at Ragdale in 2013, he finished the first draft of his novel Forty Rod Road. After he returned to his Chicago home from the Lake Forest writing retreat, he opened his laptop. Taken aback, he shouted to his wife Brooke — a portrait and commercial photographer — that he needed help. “I had erased it all,” says Mower, an alumnus of Brown University and Deerfield Academy. He spent the next 10 days at the Harold Washington Library, rewriting from memory as best he could. The resulting work should
resonate with many North Shore readers who remember being vulnerable, naive college freshmen. The narrator of Forty Rod Road is a somewhat aimless veteran of Lake Forest debutante parties who wants to spend a summer working as a ranch hand in Wyoming, where a prep-school friend died in an accident. With humor and a keen eye for detail, a gripping story unfolds. Parts of the book are true to Mower’s life. He headed to Wyoming the summer before sophomore year. “You have these delusions of
grandeur (about Wyoming). The ranch was a lot less than I expected,” he recalls. “At that age, there’s this leap from innocence to experience — it’s not all good. It’s painful.” The father of two teenagers when he began the book, Mower wrote it because he hoped his children would read it. “I wanted them to know I was once 19 and human,” he says. “I was writing it for the kids to say, ‘Dad had a rough patch.’ “ Of course, in a perfect plot twist, they haven’t read it. Mower seems to understand. “If my father had given me a book and said ‘This is how I was at 19,’ I would have put it in the corner,” he says. Keeping journals for 20 years helped Mower — a financial advisor downtown — train for the writing life. He liked waking up at 5 a.m. and working on the book (“two or three hours would just disappear”). He shared the first draft with a number of readers, who agreed the story was solid but needed tightening. Now, he’s involved with crafting two sequels. The 184-page Forty Rod Road (available at www.amazon.com) was pub-
lished independently, and he’s shopping these new books to literary agents. The second book will pick up where Forty Rod Road left off, returning protagonist Hank Chandler to Wyoming the following summer for a bit of Western justice. The third in the series will feature Chandler seven years later, more mature but still entangled with the goings on at Forty Rod Road. Says Mower, “Forty Rod Road is a metaphor for those rough patches we have to deal with in life. Along the way we learn it is not the destination, it’s the journey that matters most.” Enjoy the weekend.

Water, water everywhere — but no swimming By Emily Spectre

eading into Memorial Day Weekend, Wilmette residents received a notice from the Wilmette Park District that two of the four pools at Centennial Family Aquatic Center would be out of commission. The leisure pool — which features water slides — and tot wading pool were both closed due to maintenance issues.
“We experienced a break in one of the lines that takes water from the leisure pool to the pump room where the water is treated and then pumped back to the top of the tube slide to make it function properly,” explained Steve Wilson, executive director of the Wilmette Park District. According to Wilson, the pipe is long and workers were unable to locate the break using cameras and other methods.

The Park District continues to work with a pool engineer to find a solution for the tube slide and hopes to get it back in service by June 6 — or at the latest June 13. “When the season concludes, we will be able to address the failure in this line and get the problem repaired before we go into the winter so we are ready for next summer,” Wilson said. In 2014, there were 2,397 visits to the pool, while this year there were nearly half at 1,090. The pools will be open from 1-6 p.m. on weekends only until the regular season starts on June 13. For a project, Mr. Douglass will have a real client come in looking for video work. We’ll all produce a video and the client will actually use one.” They’ve produced college recruitment videos for athletes to send with their college applications; videos for school organizations like the LFHS Foundation, the Association of Parents & Teachers, and LFHS Applause; and videos people use to support their crowd-funding efforts on fundraising platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. The students get paid, and the new media department uses a fraction of the earnings to buy more gear for the students. Plays shine bright like a Diamond By Gregg Shapiro
L
ydia R. Diamond is back on the North Shore. The Northwestern University alumna recently returned to Evanston with her family after spending a few years teaching at Boston University and as a fellow at Boston’s Huntington Theatre Company. Remounted as part of Windy City Playhouse’s premiere 2015 season, Diamond’s play Stick Fly, about a family gathering on Martha’s Vineyard and how it doesn’t take long for the gloves to come off, opened May 31 and runs through July 5. The production reunites Diamond with director Chuck Smith and actor Phillip van Lear. (For Stick Fly tickets, visit http:// windycityplayhouse.com/) Gregg Shapiro: Can you please say a few words about your memories of Evanston when you were at Northwestern? Lydia R. Diamond: I came to Northwestern from Waco, Texas. You can imagine the culture shock [laughs]. It was thrilling. From my dorm room I had a direct view of the lake; you could smell it and hear it. I found my people at Northwestern, made lifetime friends and colleagues. I remember Sunday dinners with friends at Clark’s, Dave’s Italian Kitchen and JK Sweets. When a parent came to town we upgraded to Pineyard or Campagnola [laughs]. What a lovely place to come into my adulthood. GS: Did you write or begin to write any plays while you were at Northwestern? LRD: I did write plays at Northwestern. I wrote a play called Solitaire that won the Agnes Nixon Playwriting award. I also wrote a one-woman play called Here I am…see can you handle it, adapted from the writings of Nikki Giovanni (she graciously gave me permission to do the piece). I later started a theater company and produced and acted in both. I began a play called The Inside that was first produced by MPAACT theater company. They remounted it earlier this year. GS: While you were at Northwestern, did you become involved in the Chicago theater scene? LRD: I was able to do some professional theater while I was at Northwestern. My first professional show was Stephen Carter’s Pecong at Victory Gardens, directed by Dennis Zacek. GS: After living away, what brought you back to the region? LRD: We’d lived in Chicago for 20 years prior to moving to Boston and had always considered it home. It was time to come home. GS: What does it mean to you to have a production of your play Stick Fly at Windy City Playhouse? LRD: It’s so wonderful to have a chance to have my play produced by this new, vibrant company. It is clear that they know what they’re doing and a pleasure to work with such talented people. GS: The play’s original director, Chuck Smith, and star, Phillip van Lear, are also returning to Stick Fly. What does that mean to you? LRD: Working with Chuck again, on this play, is like coming home. Also Phillip van Lear, my first Joe LeVay, is such a talented actor. The first actor who does a role well, in your mind, is always that character. I have been blessed to see many talented and well-known actors do this role, but Joe was made for Phillip. Also, he’s aged nicely into the role.

“I came to Northwestern from Waco, Texas. You can imagine the culture shock. It was thrilling.” —Lydia R. Diamond
Photography by Joel Lerner GS: What is the meaning of Stick Fly, the title of the play? LRD: There’s a reference to Stick Fly that Taylor, an entomologist, makes when she’s talking to Joe about how the movement of a fly is studied. If you listen closely, you’ll hear what I think is a nice metaphor. GS: There was a 2012 production of Stick Fly on Broadway, produced by Alicia Keys. How did she come to be involved with the play? LRD: Kenny Leon, the Tony Award-winning director who did Stick Fly on Broadway, had directed a touring show of Alicia’s. Also, some of her people came to the lovely production of the show that was done in a joint production at Arena Stage and The Huntington Theatre. She read the script and became a champion. She also wrote the incidental music for the production. GS: Your play Smart People, which is “set among a group of academics the eve of President Obama’s election in 2008,” is scheduled to open off-Broadway in 2016. What can you tell me about it? LRD: Smart People was a McCarter Theatre
commission. It took me seven years to write. It’s a small play about big ideas. The protagonist, Brian White, is a professor at Harvard University and is trying to prove that white people are genetically pre-disposed to be racist. The play looks at the personal and professional fallout of such an incendiary premise. GS: Do you have any advice for budding playwrights? LRD: Write [laughs]! Write for yourself, not other people. Put the work in front of family, friends, churches, schools, whoever will watch. Don’t wait for someone to come to you and produce it. But while you’re doing that, keep sending them out. Find out what kind of plays a theater produces, how they accept submissions and send it in. But don’t wait for something to happen with that play; it can take years, so keep writing new ones. My dear friend and mentor Russ Tutterow, always said that “the next play will be better.” I have found that to be true. So keep writing the next play while you’re sending out the others. GS: As was mentioned earlier, you have returned
to Evanston. What do you like best about the Evanston of 2015? LRD: The Evanston of 2015 isn’t so different from the Evanston I left 10 years ago. It’s beautiful, diverse, culturally vibrant, and has great schools. GS: Do you have any favorite Evanston dining or cultural spots that you would like to share with readers? LRD: There are great theaters: The FleetwoodJourdain, Next, the Piven, Mudlark. I’m sure I’ve left off some and apologies for that. I’m a fan of the restaurant The Lucky Platter; it may be the biggest reason I moved back to Evanston. I also frequent Farmhouse, Heckey’s and Dixie Kitchen. Finally, my favorite thing is the Century 12/ Cine Arts 6, our huge movie complex. Ahhh, so nice [laughs]. Restaurants, a cocktail lounge, and movies round the clock, heaven. You didn’t ask about boutiques. GS: Okay, what about boutiques? LRD: I’d say that shopping is part of my writing process, and I love Cou Cou, perhaps a little too much for my pocketbook [laughs].

abriella Cooperman of Highland Park was five years old when she decided to start changing lives. Her younger sister Danielle had been experiencing positive results in the riding program at Equestrian Connection, a therapeutic horseback riding program for individuals with special needs. “When she was a little baby, she didn’t have the motor planning to lift up her thumb to her mouth,” says Cooperman, now 14 years old and a freshman at Highland Park High School. “When she was on the horse, her back was straighter, and the movement of the horse helped her physically. Now, she is talking, she is walking, running dancing, all of these fantastic things.” She wanted to help the organization that had done so much

Love & Marriage
Don’t forget about the menfolk
Joanna Brown
A
few months ago I invited readers to submit topics they’d like to see me tackle in this column space. I received thoughtful responses, and I’ve had fun learning more about the issues readers raised. Patrick Baker of Lake Forest sent one such note. He pointed to a list of marriage benefits published Jan. 31, including tax breaks and legal rights, and cited the security they provide — mostly for the female partner. “However, since half of all marriages include men, may I suggest that an appeal to men’s interests in regard to the subject of ‘Love and Marriage’ may double your readership,” Mr. Baker wrote. I appreciated his honesty and the example he cited from this newspaper. I was also impressed by his interest in improving his relationship. As well I should be. A study published in 2014 by the Harvard Business School found that although many people are reluctant to seek advice for fear of appearing incompetent, the fear is misplaced. In fact, the research team found that individuals who seek advice are perceived as being
“Ms. Armstrong explains that she began her study of the genders in 1991, after being told by a (very honest) friend that she emasculated men, including her then-three-year-old son.” more competent than those who do not seek advice — especially when the task for which they need advice is difficult. I can’t think of anything harder than maintaining a healthy marriage. “Quite possibly, advice seekers fail to seek needed advice because they mistakenly believe that others have higher expectations of what they should know than they really do,” wrote researchers Alison Wood Brooks and Francesca Gino of the Harvard Business School and Maurice Schweitzer of the Wharton School. Further, their study found that individuals who seek advice are also seen as more competent when
she emasculated men, including her then-three-year-old son. “Every time I emasculated a man, my behavior was a knee-jerk reaction prompted by my fears and reinforced by my feelings of weakness,” she writes on her website. “As this overpowering realization struck home, I knew that I would never experience my power as a woman until I allowed men to have their power too. “The choice was either to be weak together or to be powerful together. I chose being powerful.” She committed then to changing her behavior and has never looked back. Ms. Armstrong’s website is full of books and seminars but also free articles and videos for interested readers. Mr. Baker wrote in his endorsement of her work, “She has a very large male (and female) following. Her views always include a gender balance, the back and forth of marriage. Her research on the differences between men and women are always startling and enlightening.”
they seek advice from experts. Solidifying his reputation in my mind, Mr. Baker had an expert in mind. He recommended the work of Alison Armstrong, who founded PAX (an acronym for partnership, adoration and xtasy) Programs Inc. in 1995 to educate men and women about gender differences, their interaction and partnership. Pax is also the Latin word for peace, and thus the organization aims to keep the peace between the sexes. At her website understandmen.com, Ms. Armstrong exLet me know where you seek plains that she began her study of the genders in 1991, after being marital advice. Musings by Mike Lubow
e may have short attention spans these days, but let’s not underestimate the reach of our minds. For example — sense memories. These timeless mental assets can assert themselves without warning and without your intention. If you’re lucky, they’ll bring you a pleasant moment from the past. Say you’re walking along a trail in the Chicago Botanic Garden. It smells like trees and green things. But suddenly, inexplicably, you’re thinking of the way your mother’s meatloaf smelled when it was in the oven. And you’re back in your childhood, also picking up the nostalgic scent of your dad’s cigarette smoke. They aren’t real smells, but sense memories from the distant past. Why are you flashing back to them? And then it hits you. There’s music playing in your ear buds, old music from a new smart phone. That piano riff. You’d heard it repeatedly as a little kid while your mom did housework to it. It’s from the Peer Gynt Suite by Grieg. Specifically, it’s the piece called “Solveig’s Song.” It’s pretty. And it’s pretty weird that those musical notes written by a genius in Norway 140 years ago can tap you on the shoulder as you’re walking on the North Shore in 2015, thinking about other things. For a brief moment, they evoke the secure reality felt by a little kid toddling around while his mom was in the kitchen, his dad was nearby, and all was right. You were feeling that way again. Soon the music in your ears ends, and you’re back to the here and now. But the distant sense of meatloaf and cigarettes lingers in your imagination.

Ribs help keep things casual at Nieto’s
Owners Debbie and Carlos Nieto By Simon Murray
I
n 2011, New Year’s Day came and went, and with it Highland Park’s superior fine dining restaurant, Carlos’, which closed its doors for good the night before.
Fast forward four years. The restaurant that opened in its place is a new take, but it’s still all in the family. Owners Debbie and Carlos Nieto, overseeing a restaurant that was named No. 1 in the Chicago Zagat guide numerous times — not to
mention launching chefs Roland Liccioni and Gabriel Viti, two culinary titans of the Chicagoland area — have since overseen a delightful reimagining of their old space. More casual than upscale, the dynamic restaurateur couple brought down the house, bringing an expertise of over 30 years in fine dining to a neighborhood-styled restaurant called Nieto’s. “What happened was — people change, tastes change,” notes Carlos. “We were a fine dining restaurant and people didn’t really want that anymore. So we made Carlos’ restaurant casual. We weren’t ready to go away.” “Here’s what I like to say: Carlos’ plates at casual prices,” adds Debbie. The couple, who met at a bar — “a couple years ago,” jokes Carlos — live in Antioch, where they teach private, hands-on cooking classes at their Crooked Pine ranch. One plate, the Baby Back Ribs, was a new creation for Nieto’s menu, but one Debbie has been making for years. “It’s an old family recipe,” says Debbie, who quit her job as a lab technician to help Carlos oversee the original restaurant, which has now burgeoned into a well-respected group. “You slice apples, wrap the ribs in foil, and cook it very slow in the oven. Slow and low. Then you barbecue them.”

Socials Pompeii: A New Jewelry Collection by Eve J. Alfillé Photography by Nan Stein
Friends and fans of designer and artist Eve J. Alfillé crowded her Evanston gallery and studio in May to witness the unveiling of her newest collection of hand-crafted jewelry: a tribute to ancient Pompeii. Guests indulged in champagne, food, and live music while they perused the latest collection, which was inspired by Alfillé’s recent trip to Italy. The rich gold, plump pearls and emeralds, as well as the tourmalines and grey diamonds, delighted guests, as they mingled and shopped for hours. evejewelry.com

What change would you make if you were mayor?
Kara Noe and Damien, Evanston Elizabeth Pierre and Debbie Pagels, Evanston Elizabeth: Better integration. We are still divided. If something were to happen here like it did in Baltimore, the issue would be revealed.
Mike Henry, Evanston
I would encourage more family-friendly restaurants.
I wish there were more street festivals in the summer. I love interacting with new merchants in the area.
Debbie: I ditto exactly what Elizabeth said!
Alison Port, Evanston Natalie Kichanov, Evanston I don’t know — I guess I’m not ready to be mayor!
Rebecca Friedman, Evanston I would enhance relationships with Northwestern University.
I just moved here. I’m still trying to get used to this city — love the mix of professionalism and collegiate life. I guess I would say that I would promote this great mix in one city!

YOur FIrst LuxurY HOme
Restoring the North Shore for 75 Years
If you’ve decided to relocate into a luxury home and you’ve made an excellent choice. But quite possibly, you’re wondering where to begin. You may be astounded by the amenities and in need of a guide. Agents who are experienced in the average home market might not be quite suitable for your needs. The luxury home market is different in that there are different things to consider. Take your time. As a first time buyer of a luxury home, you should ask your agent for their advice. After your Realtor® has narrowed down the possibilities for you, previewed the homes and is ready to show you what they consider suitable, take your time on the walk through. Focus on the detail. These properties are immense, so be prepared for a walk through that will take at minimum of two hours to properly see all the amenities; it can often take even longer. This is an important decision to make—let your first luxury in your new home be that of time and consideration.

Kings of the Hill
Trevians rule boys lacrosse, win a state-record 11th state championship BY bill mclean sports@northshoreweekend.com
J
ack Hill shot up to 195 pounds not too long ago. The New Trier High School senior long stick middie overdid it a bit in the weight room, his dedication blowing past moderation and lapping it a few hundred times. He worked out eight times a week. “I had to slender down,” said the 6-foot-1 Hill. “I was having a tough time moving [laterally].” He weighed 179 pounds on May 30, the day he and his Trevians faced Glenbrook North High School’s Spartans for the Illinois High School Lacrosse Association (IHSLA) state championship at Naperville Central High School. A good weight, an ideal weight. The only thing that added pounds afterward was New Trier’s team bus. It had to haul the state championship hardware to Winnetka following New Trier’s 10-5 victory in rainy, windy, cold conditions. November had returned … after Memorial Day. The first-place lacrosse trophy isn’t Stanley Cup big, but it probably needed a full bus seat. “Our guys worked hard all season for this,” said Trevians coach Tom Herrala, whose guys finished 18-4 overall this spring, 16-0 against Illinois squads, and captured a state-record 11th state championship. “Time in the weight room, time shooting on their own, drilling. They deserved this. The senior class … probably one of our program’s best ever. They all worked a ton, worked so hard.” Hill embodied the Trevs’ collective work ethic. The school’s strength coach, Jim Davis, supervised Hill’s program. Hill often hit the school’s Fly Solo room, a hub for all kinds of New Trier athletes interested in getting into tip-top shape. There might have been talk of having his mail forwarded there. “Real dedicated, and he’s such a great player,” said New Trier junior middie Colin Casas, who scored a goal and delivered a pair of assists in the state championship game. “What I also like about Jack is how positive he is. He is always positive.”

Hill was one of a state-high five New Trier players to earn US Lacrosse All-America honors this spring. He will play lax at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut, a Land of Lincoln native geared up to trigger plenty of “yard sales” in East Coast games. A “yard sale” in lacrosse is slang for checking a ball carrier and knocking the ball and the stick completely out of the player’s hands. Such a tactic elicits shouts like “Yard sale!” and “Hey, how much for that stick?” New Trier enjoyed a priceless first half against Glenbrook North on the way to successfully defending its state title. The Trevians tallied the first goal of the game and the last five goals of the first half to take a 6-1 lead. Trevians senior attackman Steen Jorgensen — the Central Suburban’s Of-
fensive Player of the Year — struck for two of his game-high three goals before intermission. He also assisted on senior Chris Brower’s game-opening goal. Glenbrook North (17-6 overall, 13-5 vs. Illinois schools), which lost to NT 5-3 on April 14, got as close as 6-3 and 8-5 in the second half and scored twice in a 90-second span in the third quarter. Patient, pretty passes helped New Trier extend its possessions. Trevians senior goalie Jonathan Anastos (11 saves) played like the US Lacrosse AllAmerican he is. Brower finished with two goals and two assists. Senior middie Will Rossi (two goals), sophomore attack Nelson Gaechter (goal), senior defenseman Kevin Mulhern (goal, assist) and junior middie Matt McShea (assist) also had a say on offense for the victors.
Notable: New Trier’s Jason Schoenwetter was named IHSLA Assistant Coach of the Year. … New Trier and Loyola Academy had each won 10 state championships before the 2015 state championship game on May 30. … Casas, Trevians senior attack Ben Connelly and junior defenseman Tyler Seminetta were also named US Lacrosse All-Americans. Connelly did not play in the state championship game because of a leg injury. … New Trier scored a combined 72 goals in five playoff games this spring, netting at least 15 in four of them. Jorgensen finished his final prep season with 14 postseason goals. … Jorgensen, with 45 assists in ’15, finished one assist shy for most helpers in a season by a Trevian. topped St. Viator 11-5 in a state semifinal on May 27. Viator, seeded seventh, had eliminated last year’s state runner-up and this year’s second-seeded team, Loyola Academy, 8-7 in a state quarterfinal on May 23. Topseeded NT defeated fourthseeded Lake Forest High School in the other state semifinal on May 27. … New Trier and Glen-
brook North battled for another state championship in March, this one staged at the United Center. Like clockwork Aizenberg, Gordon add to HP’s legacy by taking third in state doubles BY BILL MCLEAN, sports@northshoreweekend.com
D
avid Aizenberg heard the knock on his door late one night last month. It was Max Gordon, one of Aizenberg’s Highland Park High School tennis teammates. It was around 10 p.m. Aizenberg, a junior, opened the door. Gordon, a senior, opened his mouth. “Where’s my tennis bag?” Gordon asked. Both were concerned about the missing bag. Valuable stuff filled it. Gordon’s tennis gear was, in essence, also Aizenberg’s tennis gear, because the two played doubles together. The state meet loomed. The tennis bag, it turned out, was in good hands … Giants coach Steve Rudman’s hands. The question of the weekend for HP’s tennis team and its followers — “Where is the duo of Aizenberg/Gordon (on the Saturday morning of the state meet)?” — was an easier one to answer. In the semifinals, that’s where. That’s where strong Rudmancoached doubles teams serve well, volley well, return well. Chicago Blackhawks teams reach Western Conference Finals; Highland Park doubles teams reach state semifinals. Clockwork, meet regularity. Aizenberg/Gordon finished third at the state meet on May 30, rallying nicely in a match against a pair from Belleville East after falling 6-3, 6-2 to undefeated Glenbrook North seniors Miguel Perez and David Zakhodin in a semifinal at the North Shore Racquet Club in Northbrook. Wet weather forced the action indoors on the final day of the three-day meet. “It feels good, feels amazing, to be a top-three doubles team, considering the caliber of players on all those past [HPHS] doubles teams,” Aizenberg, a three-time doubles state qualifier, said. “We wanted this match [vs. Belleville East’s Chase Sumne/Jacob Hamilton], really wanted it.” The 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 victory in the match for third place avenged a 7-6, 6-3 loss in the regular season. “That’s not easy, regrouping like they did after losing a semifinal,” Rudman said. “That semi was theirs for the taking. They

put what went wrong behind them and returned [serves] well the whole match [vs. Belleville East]. Each did great things after losing that first set. It was great to see our guys go up 3-0 in that second set. When they had a chance to finish a big point or a game, they finished the big point, finished the big game. “We have a rule, ‘If you make a mistake, make sure it’s an aggressive mistake.’ Hit an overhead long? That’s aggressive, and that’s an acceptable mistake. I don’t mind acceptable mistakes.” The pair, seeded 5-8, nearly had to accept a tough loss to Joliet West’s Tom Carney/Morgan Red in the third round on May 28. Joliet West was up 7-6 (9), 2-6, 5-2, a mere service hold away from a Round of 16 berth. Aizenberg/Gordon refused to be relegated to the back draw, winning four of the next five games to force a tiebreaker. The Giants advanced after downing Carney/Red in a 7-4 breaker. “I was not playing well in that match,” Gordon admitted. “David
picked me up. David has an upbeat personality, and he was good at keeping me at the right level during the season.” Gordon played with verve and controlled tenacity in the match for third place. He practically skipped in between points, intent on maintaining the rhythm the combo had established at the outset of the second set. Aizenberg, unflappable and confident, played smart doubles, Rudman doubles, HP doubles. “We had the desire — the desire we needed to have — after the first set,” Gordon said. “We also had a better strategy. What also helped was [Rudman’s] coaching. It’s nice, his coaching. He knows how to get us to relax mentally.” Aizenberg/Gordon (6-1 at state) won four of their matches in straight sets, with two coming against 9-16 seeds (New Trier’s Jeffrey Chen/Mahir Wagh in the Round of 16 and Hinsdale Central’s Zach Elliott/Nick Calzolano in a quarterfinal). The two Giants collaborated for five wins in seven matches at state last
spring, reaching the quarterfinals of the back draw. “I’m happy Max ended his career on a good note,” Rudman said. “They had a great season, a phenomenal season. The only teams they lost to ended up being top-eight teams at state.” Highland Park’s other state qualifier, sophomore Jacob Edelchik, went 5-2, landing in a singles quarterfinal as a 5-8 seed. He lost there to reigning state champ Edward Grabill of Hinsdale Central and then edged Glenbrook North’s Mark Wu 3-6, 7-6 (4), 10-7 (super tiebreaker) in the consolation quarterfinals. A fever of 102 degrees kept Edelchik off the courts for a week at the beginning of the season. “Jacob is a tough kid, a fighter,” said Rudman, whose club tied for eighth place (22 points) at state. “That was a tremendous accomplishment, making the quarters. He’s growing, getting stronger. The only kid in the state tournament, with a better ranking in the 16s than Jacob’s, is [Lyons Township’s] Gianni Ross [the state singles runner-up].

“Overall we had a great tournament, a great season. This group was one of the best I’ve had. Great kids. Great kids tennis-wise, too.” Notable: Central Suburban League North Meet champion Highland Park wasn’t the only school from the Deerfield Sectional to finish among the top nine teams at the state meet last weekend. Deerfield placed fourth
(26 points), and Glenbrook North (22) tied HP for eighth place. All three fielded only two state entries. Sound, state-worthy players from the three schools could only watch the state meet. “The group of death,” New Trier coach Tad Eckert said of the highly competitive Deerfield Sectional. His Trevians (two singles and two doubles entrants) placed third (31) at state.

Drawn to art — and volleyball Decorated Mazurek leaves his mark in two fields BY DAN SHALIN, sports@northshoreweekend.com
W
hen students at Loyola Academy have congratulated Jakub Mazurek on his work, they’ve had to specify what they mean. Are they speaking of his work on the volleyball court? Or his art work? The senior has a piece of art hanging in the school hallway. Mazurek is in the Honors Studio Art class at Loyola, and he does etching, oil paintings and pencil drawings of landscapes and portraits. Earlier this year, he combined his two passions — volleyball and art — for an assignment where students were asked to draw an important snapshot of their life. Mazurek drew himself carrying his volleyball jersey and gym bag on his way to a match. “I love art,” said Mazurek, who lives in Chicago’s Jefferson Park neighborhood. “This year has been an amazing experience because I’ve been able to show my creative and artistic side in school. Being featured in the hallways, seeing people congratulate me on my works, it’s a great feeling that people have enjoyed what I’m doing.” Mazurek also has done amazing things for the LA volleyball team. The middle hitter is one of the stars on the Ramblers’ volleyball team, which brought a No. 1 sectional seed and a 32-7 record into the Glenbrook South Sectional final against No. 2 New Trier, scheduled for June 2. The team was hoping to make its first appearance in the Elite Eight since 1994. On May 29, Mazurek came up with a 17-kill performance in a sectional semifinal win over No. 4 Glenbrook North 31-29, 25-17, 25-23. Though his big bomb jump serve was a bit off, Mazurek made his 6-foot-7, 215-pound presence felt at the net. With one thunderous spike after another, the threeyear starter showed why he is considered one of the better middles in the state. “Jakub’s big kills create a lot of momentum, which is especially important when there is such a big crowd,” said Loyola senior outside hitter Connor Kreb, who also had 17 kills in the sectional semifinal. “Also, with Jakub such

work, and it’s great to see it finally coming together for something like this. Just getting the chance at Loyola is a dream come true.” New Trier Maine East High School boys volleyball fans wore red, white and blue and other USA-themed garb at a sectional semifinal last weekend. They left Glenbrook South High School’s muggy gym feeling blue in Glenview, thanks mostly to New Trier High School’s block fest. Middle hitter Collin Crowder, a 6-foot-8 senior, popped for a team-high seven blocks in the Trevians’ 25-16, 27-25 defeat of Maine East’s Demons on May 29. Two of them came in consecutive points in the first set, giving NT an 8-4 lead. “Might as well use my height for something,” Crowder cracked afterward. Junior outside hitter Peter Hindsley (6 kills, ace) and senior outside hitter Daniel Wacura (4 kills) added two blocks apiece in the battle of reigning Central Giant stride: David Aizenberg reaches to stab a forehand volley during the state semifinal. Maine East has a lot of weapons. “Teams are scared as soon as they see [Crowder], a big, tall guy,” she added. “He has really turned it on lately, as a block threat and as an offensive ‘Kub killer: Senior middle hitter Jakub Mazurek of the Ramblers gets ready to pulverize the ball against Glenbrook North during the threat.” Glenbrook South Sectional Semifinal. here they sat, on an indoor tennis court, exhausted after a wild point that had to be seen to be appreciated at the state meet last weekend. Lake Forest High School senior Brice Polender was sitting and smiling. Deerfield High School senior Noah Rosenblat was sitting and smiling on the other side of the net. Lake Forest coach Corky Leighton could not smile. He was too busy returning something that had migrated, suddenly, south. His jaw. “People were going nuts,” Leighton said of the spectators at Centre Court Athletic Club in Hanover Park on May 30. “Brice and Noah had some amazing, amazing points, some whacky and exciting points.” The point that left both netters sitting and fans agog was probably the point of the three-day event. Rosenblat was up 8-7 in the super tiebreaker (played in lieu of a third set), in a consolation quarterfinal singles match. Back and forth it went, big shots from Polender, big shots from Rosenblat. Polender cracked five overheads. Rosenblat tracked down all five. Polender appeared to have clinched the point on the fifth overhead smash, the ball highbouncing toward a spot well behind Rosenblat and a baseline. But the Warrior got under it like an all-out, sprinting outfielder and somehow, while jumping, smacked an overhead winner past a stunned Polender. Rosenblat had answered an overhead with an … overhead.

Scouts freshman Connor Polender joined his older brother as a state singles qualifier last weekend. He split his four matches. His first-round opponent: reigning state champion and 3-4 seed Edward Grabill of Hinsdale Central. Tough draw. Tough draw for a sectional runner-up. The Red Devil, a senior and a state doubles champ two years ago, ended up fourth at state last weekend. Lake Forest’s four other state qualifiers — seniors Greg Frauenheim/Jordon O’Kelly and senior Ben Kasbeer/junior Colton England — combined for 14 team points in doubles. Frauenheim/O’Kelly won three matches in the championship draw and three more in the back draw. Kasbeer/England connected for three back draw victories after a 6-2, 6-1 defeat of Sandburg’s Trent Sichelski/Nick Wood in the first round. Tiebreakers go NT’s way at state tennis meet

ew Trier High School tennis coach Tad Eckert makes hopefuls play super tiebreakers during tryouts. Lots and lots of super tiebreakers. They are pressure-packed, mini tests. What Eckert likes to see: the kind of shot a player attempts if the challenge is knotted at 9-9. His super “breaker” isn’t a winby-two-points contest; it’s a firstto-10-points one. “We spend about 90 percent
sports.indd 54
of the time playing super tiebreakers in tryouts,” Eckert said. Foul weather May 29-30 forced officials to alter the scoring at the three-day state tennis meet last weekend. If combatants in a back-draw match split sets, they would have to play a super tiebreaker to settle it, not a third set. The news must have made Eckert smile under the rain clouds. His Trevians played five super tiebreakers and won four of them,
netting crucial team points and extending their state runs. Junior Tom Bickel advanced with 12-10 and 10-3 victories. Senior Thomas Hanley and junior Wyatt Mayer eliminated double pairs with 11-9 and 10-8 decisions. New Trier, the team, tallied 31 points, super enough for a thirdplace trophy. Eleven of the team’s 21 state wins came in the pressure-packed back draw. “We were built for back-draw
matches,” Eckert said. “My focus, all year, was to make sure we put the work in so we’d get deep back-draw runs from our kids. “Our goal was to come home with a state trophy. Not too many people thought we would do that. Third place … it felt like first place to us.” Bickel battled in nine matches in three days, winning seven of them. Five of his triumphs followed a 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 third-round
loss to eventual third-place finisher Alex Ross of Lyons Township High School. His twin, Scott Bickel, went 4-2 in singles. Hanley/Mayer (6-2 at state) reached the consolation semifinals. New Trier’s other state qualifiers, junior Mahir Wagh/freshman Jeffrey Chen, won a doubles match in the back draw after making it to the Round of 16. The Trevians played all of their matches indoors at Centre Court
Athletic Club in Hanover Park on May 30. “Not once, during the whole tournament, did any of our entries play a match at Hersey High School [the tourney’s host site and site of all quarterfinals], and we still got a trophy. That was unusual.” The third-place trophy last weekend was the program’s 12th state trophy in 16 years. NT won state six times in that span.

TEAM ROUNDUPS Circling the Bases | Baseball Lake Forest: The Scouts ended the season 24-9 after falling to Mundelein 6-5 in eight innings in the Class 4A Lake Zurich regional final on June 1. “Our seniors had 48 wins in two years,” said LF head coach Ray Del Fava. “That’s pretty impressive.” LF ended up 0-3 against Mundelein this spring. The Mustangs scored an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Scouts finally got to Mundelein ace lefthander Brendan Murphy (7 IP, 5 runs, 8 hits), who eventually was relieved by Ray Calabrese. They tallied two runs in the top of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Mark Turelli had a run-scoring double, while Charlie Sullivan brought in a run with groundout. LF scored three runs in the third inning on RBI singles by Cole Digman and Turelli and a basesloaded walk by George Karkazis. Luke Gibson started for LF and allowed four hits over six innings. “He gave us everything that we asked of him,” said Del Fava. On May 28, the Scouts topped Lake Zurich 4-2 in the regional semifinal. Cal Kropke had two hits, while Karkazis, Digman, Cal Coughlin (1-for4), Jake Durburg (1-2) had RBIs. Turelli went the distance on the mound, allowing two runs and seven hits. Loyola: Jacob and the Ironman. Thanks to the heroics of Jacob Frank and Mikey Rivera, the Loyola Academy baseball team

ended up in Eleventh Heaven on June 1. The host Ramblers pulled off the upset by downing No. 2 seeded Notre Dame 2-1 in 11 innings in a Class 4A regional title game. In the top of the 11th inning, Frank smacked a leadoff home run to put the Ramblers (18-16) ahead. The senior first baseman’s dramatic solo shot set up an awe-inspiring ending by Rivera. In the bottom of the 11th, the senior righthander, who threw 142 pitches, put the finishing touches on a rare complete game. He didn’t allow a run after the first inning. “Regional final. Eleven innings. Versus Notre Dame. There’s nothing better than this,” said Frank, who now has six homers on the season. “Coming out of the game wasn’t even an option until the ninth inning. And then, when Jacob hit the ball out, I said, ‘I’ll finish this,’ ” said Rivera. The Ramblers were scheduled to play Oak Park-River Forest in the semifinal round of the Niles West on June 4. On May 30, LA used a terrific pitching performance from Jack Yalowitz (7 IP, 4 hits, 9 Ks) to beat Taft 6-2 in a regional semifinal. Frank and Sean Tully had two hits each. New Trier: The Trevians received another masterful outing from junior left-hander Ben Brecht. He allowed just two hits and one run with nine strikeouts over seven innings against Fenwick in the Class 4A Von Steuben Regional final on June 1. With the score tied 1-1, Brecht was lifted in the
eighth inning. “That’s what we do,” said New Trier coach Mike Napoleon. Fenwick, which received eight-plus innings from starter Quinn Snarskis, wound up winning the game 2-1, when it scored an unearned run off NT reliever Ryan Haak in the top of the ninth. The Trevians (21-10-1) threatened in the bottom of the ninth by putting two runs on. But Fenwick Kevin Forde came on in relief and stuck out the side. Matt Boscow (2-for-4) drove in NT’s lone run in the fifth inning. He brought in Jake Reynolds (2-3), who had reached on a double. The Trevians defeated Lane 9-1 in the regional semifinal on May 27. Boscow, Clay Czyzynski and Kevin Donahue had two hits each. Czyzynski also drove in three runs. Ryan Acri had two RBIs.
The Rundown | Boys Track New Trier: The Trevians brought home one state medal from the IHSA Class 3A state meet in Charleston on May 30. The 4x800 relay foursome of Om Kanwar, Jack Litowitz, Josh Rosenkranz and Ted Oh cruised the eight laps in 7:50.72 for seventh place. TEAM ROUNDUPS Continued from page 1 opened postseason play with an impressive 15-5 victory over host Wheeling, a rain-suspended game which was completed on May 26. The offense was paced by Jon’nah Williams (3-for-4, 2 doubles, 3 RBIs), Katie Wickman (2-4), Shannon Stowe (2-3), Maggie Mack (1-1, 3RBIs), Isabel Das (double) and Sarah Porter (3 RBIs). Ashley Dueringer recorded seven strikeouts in the five-inning contest. On May 26, LF was eliminated from the playoffs by No. 1 seed Warren 18-0. Williams led the Scouts in hitting (.411). The talented freshman ended up with team highs in hits (30), runs (26), doubles (19), while she second in runs batted in (21). Her on-base percentage was a team-best .470. Mack finished the season hitting .387 with a team best .720 slugging percentage. The senior poked a team-high six home run to go along with seven doubles. The team’s other .300 hitter was junior Katie Wickman (.304). Loyola: The Ramblers completed their season on May 28 with 2-1 setback to host Palatine in a Class 4A regional semifinal. LA wound up with a 17-11 record. New Trier: The Trevians, who were scheduled to face No. 1 seed Warren in the semifinal round of the Class 4A Glenbrook South Sectional on June 2, claimed a regional title at Zion-Benton on May 30. Highlighted by a bases-clearing double by Lily Novak, the Trevians put up six runs in the top of the seventh inning and defeated the host ZeeBees 8-5. Lee Fisher was another standout of the Trev-
ians. He hit solo home runs in the first and sixth innings. Ellie Head also had two hits, while Gillian Gossard was credited with an RBI. Dana Dolinko was the winning pitcher. It was the 20th win of the season for the Trevians. NT advanced to title game by beating Glenbrook South 11-1 on May 27. Fisher also went yard in this game. She finished the game 3-for-4 with six RBIs. Novak and Dolinko had two hits apiece, while Amanda Howell drove two runs. Dolinko also starred in the circle, tossing a five-inning no-hitter.
footnotes | girls soccer Lake Forest: The Scouts were unable to defend their Class 2A title. The 2015 campaign came to a halt on May 27 with a 2-0 setback to Carmel Catholic in the semifinal round of the St. Viator Sectional. “Carmel is physical — and they’re good,” said LF head coach Ty Stuckslager, who guided the Scouts to a 14-6-2 record. “We battled them. But we couldn’t finish.” Angela Salvi scored the game’s first goal with 6:30 left in the first half. Less than four minutes later, Lake Forest junior Adrian Walker sustained a knee injury after hustling back and disrupting a Carmel breakaway. She had to be helped off the field and never returned. The Corsairs increased their lead to 2-0 with 32:49 left in the second half, when Erin Johnston popped in a shot following a diving save by LF goalkeeper Cassidy Shaul. “Great save by Cassidy, but then their girl is right there to follow it in,” said Stuckslager. The highlights of LF’s season included conference and regional championships. New Trier/Loyola: On clean goals by two of its top players — junior midfielder Bina Saipi and junior forward Kelly Maday — New Trier topped
rival Loyola Academy 2-0 in the Class 3A Evanston Sectional on May 29. The Trevians (24-1-1) were scheduled to play Conant in the Conant Supersectional on June 2. New Trier opened the scoring with 12:05 left in the first half on a header by Saipi, following a perfectly placed corner kick by Maday. Then, with 36:43 left in the second half, Maday worked her magic to give the Trevians a 2-0 advantage. During her 20-yard dribble downfield, she made a move — think: crossover dribble in basketball — that “broke the ankles” of a Loyola defender. She completed the play by ripping a left-footed laser into the back of the net. “That was a spectacular individual effort. Kelly has that in her. She can make beautiful things happen on a soccer field,” said New Trier head coach Jim Burnside. “She mixes speed with control, pace and grit. It’s a special mix,” the NT coach added. Saipi’s goal also was impressive. “She did that in a small space. Another spectacular individual effort. When I look at the film, I can bet you that everyone was in the right place at the right time,” said Burnside. “As a team, we want to play as a unit. But we also like to give opportunities (to star players).” “Their two superstars (Saipi and Maday) made two great plays. Bina was well covered. And Kelly took out three players (on her goal). Give them credit,” said LA head coach Craig Snower, who guided LA to a 21-4-2 record. “We’ve got to find catalysts like that. Someone to will us to win in the big game,” the Ramblers coach added. New Trier advanced to the sectional title game by beating Maine South 3-0 on goals by Jackie Welch, Celia Frei and Natalie Laser. Loyola defeated the host Wildkits 2-0 in the sectional semifinals on goals by Katie Taylor and Kathryn Cichon.

SUNDAY BREAKFAST
Author soldiers on writing books about military life By Simon Murray
O
wing to some kind of colossal cosmic joke, I’m having trouble finding Sergeant Glenda Dugar at Found. Luckily for me, the irony of the moment is easily remedied. The Evanston-based restaurant isn’t too large; it’s in fact quite cozy. There she is. We’re placed by the window. From here, we can survey an oscillating spring day. Rain. Sun. Rain. Sun. …Rain? Sitting down on upholstered yellow seats next to the exposed brick walls, decorative woodwork, and a large vase filled with the leafy ends of bamboo shoots, Dugar is able to get our order off — lamb meatballs, sweet potato flatbread, ginger beer — before the lunch crowd parades in, practically smashing cymbals. Dugar is conditioned to get up in the morning. Even without her 20 years of military service — one with daily bugle calls, physical training, and roll calls well before dawn — Dugar confides that she would still wake up early. It’s how her mother raised her and her seven siblings. The early bird gets the worm. Such lessons, sprinkled with personal anecdotes and hammered home with pictures and stories, are imparted throughout the author’s series of Career
Soldier books. Think of them as her memoirs. Throughout “In My Own Words,” “Confessions of an Airborne Soldier,” and “Career Soldier,” Dugar recounts growing up on the South Side of Chicago during the 1960s and her eventual rise through the ranks of the Air Force, becoming in the process the first female airborne policewoman in Fort Bragg’s 118th MP Airborne Unit. Born the fourth child on the fourth of July, Dugar lived with her family at LeClaire Courts on 47th street and Cicero Street. Eventually her family would move to the Austin area. While money was sometimes tight, Dugar remembers a comfortable, pleasant family life at home. One marked with vacations, with the entire family packing into a Winnebago camper and road tripping across the country. Those left an impression of a vast world outside of Chicago. “For all who dare to remember details about their early childhood memories or whether you choose to forget those fragments that gradually slip out of reach in your memory, either case, life goes by fast as a dream,” begins “In My Sergeant Glenda Dugar | Illustration by Barry Blitt Own Words.” In it, Dugar lays an out her life philosophy of working hard and making the most of Dugar knew she couldn’t sit still. opportunities to succeed. One She had to fly. insurance company, Dugar had “I really wanted to experience her sights set on the Air Force. such opportunity was to join the president of Delta Air Lines on life to the fullest,” says Dugar. Though she didn’t have the fouran hour-long flight. Afterwards, Leaving her job as a clerk at year-college degree necessary to

become a pilot, it was only a minor setback. (She would eventually graduate from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University with a degree in aviation management, Excelsior College with a degree in registered nursing, and George Wallace College with a degree in physical therapy assistant.) She enlisted, meeting the airborne military police’s qualifications: no previous criminal record and a height of at least five feet six inches. Soon after, Dugar was standing in the open doorway of a C-130 military transport aircraft with a parachute on her back. She had made it through physical training, the last of 21 female candidates. “Don’t fall out, Whiskey,” an officer had told her as the secondto-last woman fell out of formation, unable to keep up with the brutal pace. “You’re the last one left. Don’t stop now.” The light above the doorway had turned from red to green. The jumpmaster told her to go, the first one out of the group. She jumped. Why write the books? “I just wanted to get some stuff off my chest,” says Dugar. “I really wanted to share with my kids, basically, so many things I had wanted to say.” Adds Dugar, “Our soldiers really need to try to put things down [on paper]. We’ve been told
‘loose lips sink ships.’ My uncle came back from Vietnam and didn’t say a word, like many soldiers do. They don’t talk, and the pain is so deep.” But Dugar also has good reason to share her military experiences: both her son, Ivory Dugar, and her daughter, Stacey Pulido, are military servicemen and women as well. All three books can be found in the Pritzker Military Museum and Library in Chicago. Even the White House has a copy. Two years ago, Stacey was invited with her husband to a picnic at the White House. Dugar gave her daughter simple instructions: “Give Obama my book.” Her daughter texted her that the president was eating, and she wasn’t sure she could do it. Dugar reiterated through text: “Don’t come home with that book; I don’t care if you have to leave it on the White House lawn.” She eventually was able to give it to the First Lady, after taking a picture together with Dugar’s grandson. A letter eventually found its way in the mail. It was from Michelle, thanking Dugar for her service. That letter is now published on the back of Dugar’s dedication page; a career solider offering her thanks, in turn, to her family and all the men and women who have served and are serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.
