andering the streets of the North Shore, one rarely runs into anyone lacking an arm or a leg. The area is blessed: the vast majority can operate limbs we were born with to hold a fork, open doors and much more. At the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, the opposite is true. Wander the corridors of its Superior Street facility, and the physical losses are staggering. I first became aware of the non-profit thanks to the John Dolan Golf Challenge, run by Lake Forest’s Danny Dolan and his wife, Mary. Fivesomes included at least one golfer wearing a prosthetic leg after a car crash or another who swung a club with one arm, to offer but two examples. What amazed me each year was how well those who had rehabbed at the RIC played golf. Some could strike the ball with the grace of Northfield’s Luke Donald. And they never complained about their loss. Despite the fact the RIC has been named the best rehabilitation hospital in the country for more than 20 years in a row, its best days look to be

Viva the Vistas! North Shore homes with spectacular views wow buyers

■ by bill mclean The easiest day in the professional life of Koenig & Strey broker Eleanor Dowling had to be when she showed a Lake Bluff lakefront house to a gentleman last year. The buyer took a look at Lake Michigan for a little while, turned to Dowling and said, “I’ll buy the house.” Dowling replied, “But you haven’t even walked through the house yet.” Lake Michigan’s beauty and magnetism had done all the talking for Dowling and allowed the new homeowner to tend to other matters that day. “It took him a good minute to decide he wanted it,” Dowling said. It’s hard to put a price tag on a spectacular view from a North Shore house, especially a vista that has anything to do with an ocean-like, multi-hued great lake. “Some days Lake Michigan looks like the Caribbean Sea and on others it looks gray and surly,” says Blanche Romey, a broker at Coldwell Banker in Winnetka. “When you walk into a house and there’s a view of that lake, no matter what season it is, the aura knocks your socks off.” Other great views from second-, third-floor windows or master-bedroom balconies along these parts feature

ravines, golf courses, sprawling backyards, open lands, ponds, gardens and groves of trees. “Any views that are expansive and unobstructed, that go on forever — those are examples of ‘visual comfort,’ ” says Roberta Miller, a broker and marketing specialist at Baird & Warner in Lake Forest. “If you’re selling and your house has gorgeous views, it’s smart to show it most often at the time of day that it’s most lovely, like at sunset.

“When you walk into a house and there’s a view of that lake, no matter what season it is, the aura knocks your socks off.” | Coldwell Banker broker Blanche Romey “Something as simple as rearranging furniture helps, too,” she adds. “Doing that could create an easy path for a buyer to stroll to a window and take in a great view.” Not all views are of the stunning variety, but that

shouldn’t mean a homeowner has to invest in striking paintings to make up for the lack of nature’s eye candy. “You can do things fairly cheaply to enhance views,” says Michele Vold, a broker at Coldwell Banker in Deerfield. “If a house doesn’t have a spectacular view, make sure the landscape — it’s a house’s makeup, I like to say — around it is pretty, the house is painted and the driveway is sealed.” Lake Michigan’s waves are impossible to see and hear from 2195 Kipling Lane in West Deerfield Township. The property’s backyard, however, deserves to be near the forefront of any look at views. “It has a phenomenal view, an unbelievable view,” Vold says of the sight from the master-bed balcony of the 16-bedroom home with seven full baths and three half baths. “The backyard has a pool, a rock slide, a patio, a hot tub, a grill station and a pergola. “It’s looks,” she adds, “like a part of a Four Seasons Hotel.” The look of a buyer seeing a magnificent view for the first time thrills brokers. It also means the broker doesn’t have to say a word. “You let the view speak for itself,” says Jean Anderson, Vice President of Sales at Prudential Rubloff Properties in Lake Forest. views >> page 10

Broker Joanna Koperski of @properties-Lake Forest has been aware of guarded buyers who attempt to make it through an entire showing without reacting. A highly attractive view usually spoils such a quest and consequently bankrupts poker faces. “A great view can take a buyer’s breath away,” Koperski says, adding no matter how much upgrading or remodeling may be required, a great view can dwarf those necessities and convince a buyer to commit to a property. “They’re awed, they pause to admire, they smile — all a pleasure to watch.” Broker Debbie Scully of @properties in Highland Park gets a kick out of the reactions she witnesses while showing the house on 307 Deere Park in Highland Park. “Right after people walk in, they take a right into the

living room and it’s immediately a ‘Wow’ moment when they see the lake through two huge windows,” Scully says. “It’s dramatic and awesome.” Pick a season, any season, with Lake Michigan as its backdrop. Now look at the body of water from inside a North Shore home. You can’t lose. “What’s nice about views in this part of the world is that each season has its own beauty,” says broker and consultant Susan Maman of @properties in Winnetka. “An exquisite view of the lake is the ultimate because it’s peaceful and has a calming effect.” The Pabst Manor in Glencoe has an abundance of gorgeous views, form its majestic driveway to the country club-esque setting behind it.

“You look out and you feel like you’re at a resort,” Maman adds. Jean Wright has lived in Winnetka for 54 years and not once has a view of Lake Michigan made her shrug. “I look at it every day,” says Wright of Jean Wright Real Estate in Winnetka. “It’s green some days, it’s blue on others and today [Feb. 6] it’s white with ice caps. It’s still beautiful and interesting to me. “When we show people homes with beautiful views, they’re envisioning their furniture in the room, and when they’re looking outside, they’re envisioning their kids playing and how they would look entertaining friends. Views are important.” ■

True Lovell: New restaurant poised to open ■ by jenna schubert For 15 years, Lovell’s of Lake Forest has been a destination for elegant dining on the North Shore. Now, its owner and executive chef, Jay Lovell, is set to open another venture: a casual dining restaurant called Jay Lovell’s. Lovell and his wife, Darice, had been considering starting a new restaurant for some time, so when space became available in Highwood last year, they decided to move ahead. Smaller and more casual than Lovell’s of Lake Forest, the new restaurant — located in the strip mall on Sheridan Road across from Fort Sheridan — will have a vintage look, with flooring made from a 100-year-old Kentucky barn, as well as milk-glass light fixtures. The space will also feature two bars where patrons can eat — one inside the window and one overlooking the cooking line. At the same time, the eponymous restaurant in Lake Forest is facing changes. It was announced this month that the Lovell family will sell the one-acre property on Waukegan Road, ideally to someone who would like to continue to operate the restaurant.

Jay Lovell’s in Highwood will be open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and will feature comfort foods with a Southern flair. Those who enjoy the Reuben sandwich, pulled pork sandwich, and hamburgers served at Lovell’s of Lake Forest will find those same sandwiches at the new restaurant. Lovell’s vision is to serve the sandwiches directly on a butcher paper-lined tray, with bowls for side dishes served right next to the main dish. Lunch will also include salads and soups, and breakfast will be feature traditional comfort foods, including pancakes and omelets. Blue-plate specials, such as chicken, meatloaf, and smoked brisket, will be offered. Lovell will also dish out a variety of homemade French fries with different toppings, such as chili and cheese, pulled pork with sauce, and clam chowder and clams. A highlight of Jay Lovell’s will be its homemade baked goods. For breakfast, patrons can indulge in the restaurant’s cinnamon buns. Homemade pies will also be for sale, and diners can enjoy “pie happy hour” from 3 to 5 p.m. daily. Lovell is also starting a line of sauces to be distributed in grocery stores such as Trader Joe’s. ■

TV shows on E!, Bravo, the Food Channel and ABC have also featured its products. “We’re surrounded by beauty — the merchandise sells itself,” Margaritelli said. The collection of more than 2,000 pieces comes from all over Italy: Amalfi, Abruzzi, Sicily and villages around Umbria and Tuscany, but the majority comes from the hilltop village of Deruta. The products, all molded and painted by hand, include dinnerware, tableware and gift items. Parmesan bowls, biscotti jars, limoncello sets and gelato cups can infuse a room with Italian flair. Last month, Ardam introduced black and white contemporary to appeal to the younger clientele. “The business just keeps growing, and we keep buying new things,” said Ardam, “but our goal is to stay traditional.” The Margaritellis make annual business trips to Deruta and various Italian villages to meet with the artisans and help with the designing process. The Italian workshops value their suggestions, which are based off of the requests of the ceramics market. They direct them on shapes and colors, but Artistica never strays far from 15th- and 16th-century patterns. “We want people to feel the warmth of the product,” said Margaritelli, “and also know that it’s sold exclusively in our store, by real people — a husband-andwife team.” ■

Lisa Cotten is a jewelry designer. She lives in Winnetka. Reading: I am reading a sci-fi novel called “The Windup Girl,” by Paolo Bacigalupi. I don’t usually read sci-fi, but my boyfriend told me it was very interesting. I tend to read a mixture of nonfiction and fiction — it just depends on what mode I’m in. Listening: I have been listening to country music, which is completely new for me. I’m usually into indie rock and things you don’t hear on the radio. But lately, while I’ve been driving, I’ve been sucked into it. All my children are into country, so it’s a connection to them too — it’s music that’s truly American. Watching: I haven’t done this in so long, because I don’t have a lot of time to watch TV, but I kind of cleared the decks and had a scary movie weekend. I watched “Insidious,” “Insidious 2,” and “The Conjuring.” They were really good — based on suspense, not gore. Following: I get sort of focused on things — and right now I’m focused on stone. I’m heading to the Arizona Gem Show, and I’m really interested to see what pops up this year that’s new and beautiful. About four years ago, there was an incredible run of tourmalines, and it hasn’t been repeated. I wonder what it’ll be this year — I can’t wait. Activity: I design and make jewelry — I make the big necklaces that are strung, myself. It’s like a peaceful mediation. I put the stones together in a pile and let them hum, marinate. I like a mixture of color and proportion. I find stones and I design pieces of jewelry around unique stones, and I also do the inverse, where I design something — I just

travelled to India to do this — and I find the stones and have them cut to my specifications. There are stones that are calibrated, but they are very boring and overused. I like to go and find beautiful stones and have them cut to what pleases me. I enjoy the travel involved — I travel to India and Thailand, and I’m inspired by my surroundings. The different landscapes and the people and the architecture; I find that very inspiring. I have four children, so I have to plan very carefully, and I would say the longest I can leave at a time is two weeks. If you go overseas, it takes two days travel — and I travel for trunk shows, to sell jewelry, in smaller pockets of time. It adds up, but it’s not overwhelming. I think my jewelry designs evolve — one thing that’s always the main focus is the high-quality gemstones. Ninety-five percent of my jewelry or more is all about stones. The design comes from that. I love color. I don’t work with diamonds much because of that. I would say this year I am attracted to moonstones. They have a blue flash to them and they mix with all of the colored gemstones, but are beautiful on their own. Eating: Everything! It depends on what meal it is. I love food in season. This year I’ve been really into roasted Brussels sprouts. And because I have two teenage boys, I cook a lot of roasted meat and chicken and fish. I cook simple and healthy, but in season. What is your favorite mistake? Being born. I guess that’s not my mistake. I’m not sure I was fully planned, but I’m here. For more information, visit lisacotten.com. LIFESTYLE & ARTS | 17 CEO charts new course for venerable RIC ■ by david sweet When Joanne Smith attended medical school at Michigan State University, she joined a pediatric orthopedic rotation. One day she opened the door in a waiting room to a free amputee clinic for children in Grand Rapids. “ There had to be 50-60 severely disabled children literally without half their bodies,” says Smith. “But these kids were giggling and laughing. That everyone was so happy and so normal, I was in shock.” Smith fell in love with the rehabilitation field. Today, she is president and chief executive officer of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago — ranked the No. 1 hospital of its type in the country by U.S. News & World Report every yea r since 1991. Fa r f r om resting on its laurels, Smith is steering the non-profit into a new era. With its 182bed facility on Superior Street Joanne Smith struggling to meet demand, she has launched the drive to build a bigger facility. Scheduled to open in 2017, the sleek $550-million building at 355 E. Erie will feature a new name: The Ability Institute of RIC. “It’s literally the only project of its kind anywhere on the planet,” says Smith, a Hinsdale resident in her early 50s. “No other organization is investing these types of resources in the field. We’re almost creating a whole new category of medicine.”

Lurie Children’s Hospital — have raised about $200 million. The number of beds will increase by a third, while outpatient care service will jump fourfold. And the name — emphasizing ability rather than rehabilitation — represents a new vision for the 60-year-old organization, which treats tens of thousands of patients each year who suffer from brain injuries, strokes and more. “Ability is our code word for recovery, cure. The entire organization adopted that word with great

passion and vigor,” Smith says. “That promise of ability didn’t come from the guys in our office — it came from the eyes of our patients. They want more. “ I f we don’t get resources, that would be shameful. It’s not only money — it’s the right people, the right legislative support.” Smith has hired a branding team from San Francisco who plans to reposition RIC in this category of medicine on the world stage. Never before has the hospital needed to advertise or to pitch articles, but its new look calls for different measures. The seventh of nine children, Smith was born in Detroit. She earned a bachelor of science deg ree from Oakland University in Rochester, Mich. before heading to Michigan State. After completing her residency at Northwestern University’s Feinberg S chool of Medicine, she became a practicing physician at illustration by barry blitt RIC in the early 1990s. Smith came aboard as temporary CEO when RIC experienced financial troubles in 2006. After a national search, it was suggested Smith — who earned a masters degree in business administration from the University of Chicago in 2000 — stay permanently. “Financial is not what I thought I’d be doing, but in reality, my purpose in training at RIC was to build a new foundation and a new future,” she says. “I knew what the mission was.” According to the Chicago Tribune, RIC suffered a $16 million loss in 2006. By the next year, after new senior management was recruited and expenses were cut, it showed a small operating gain. After taking the reins as CEO, Smith tried to continue serving as a doctor but found it too challenging. Still, she’s as busy as can be working during the day, raising funds for the new facility at night and driving around her two children, horse-loving Claire and hockey-loving Michael. She calls husband Rory Repicky “the secret of my success” along with “a great nanny” and the ability to be organized (“If you get organized, you can juggle a lot”). And no matter how busy she is on administrative tasks at work, she always finds time to visit patients. “Even if they can’t speak, they are communicating what they want. So many times it’s in their look, their effort, their soul,” Smith says. “The long-term relationships you have with patients in our field is great. In another field, sometimes you’re there during an illness — and then you don’t see them anymore.” ■

New play by Pulitzer winner examines family, faith ■ by gregg shapiro Northwestern University professor and Pulitzer Prizewinning playwright Rebecca Gilman continues her successful relationship with the Goodman Theatre with their production of her new play Luna Gale, running through Feb. 23 in the Goodman’s Albert Theatre, 170 N. Dearborn in Chicago. During the course of her writing career, Gilman has not shied away from controversial subjects ranging from race (Spinning Into Butter) to violence against women (Boy Gets Girl), class (Blue Surge) and choosing to have children or be childless (The Crowd You’re in With), among others. Luna Gale, which deals with family and faith, is no exception. I spoke with Gilman about her career, her new play and more. Gregg Shapiro: Rebecca, was attending the theater a part of your formative years? Rebecca Gilman: Not so much. I grew up in a small town in Alabama. There wasn’t a lot of theater to attend. But my mom would sometimes take me into Birmingham, to the Jewish Community Center, and we would see plays. I saw South Pacific there and The King And I and an Israel Horovitz play. GS: Did you do theater in high school? RG: I did. That’s probably where I had the most exposure to it. I had a really great drama teacher. I was in a few plays. I was bad, but I was in them. Then she taught us Chekhov and Tennessee Williams and the canonical stuff. She was a terrific teacher. Her name was Betty Cox, and she just passed away last week. We were really sorry to hear it. She was a big influence on me. GS: You said that you weren’t a very good actress, but when did you know that you wanted be a playwright? RG: I think it may still go back to high school, to that same drama class. She would have us write monologues for ourselves to perform. I think that appealed to me more than acting. Then when I was a freshman in college I saw an ad for the Young Playwrights Festival that the Dramatists Guild sponsored and I wrote a play to submit to that. I was 18 when I wrote my first play. That’s pretty early, I guess [laughs]. GS: What does it mean to you to have your play Luna Gale open Goodman’s “Great Women At Play” series? RG: I’m really happy to be part of the series. I’m happier that they didn’t plan to have a “Great Women At Play” series, they just scheduled their season and then they realized there were a lot of women involved and a lot of female directors and writers and sort of made a package out of that. I’m really proud to be in the company of all the other women who are working there. I think it’s a really good sign for women artists working in the theater that it doesn’t

have to be a concerted effort anymore to be inclusive. It just happens organically, which is how it should be. GS: You have a longstanding and fruitful relationship with the Goodman Theatre. RG: It means the world to me. I feel like I might be the luckiest playwright on the planet [laughs], actually. I don’t think many playwrights enjoy that sort of collaborative relationship with the theater, at least not in the United States. I think it’s probably more common in Europe for people to have a dramaturgical playwright in residence position. What it means is that I know that I have a theater that’s interested in and invested in my work in the long-term and is supportive of what I may do even in the future. I think a lot of playwrights feel like their relationships with theaters are sort of make or break. Depending on how well their last show did, that will determine whether or not they will get another production. I feel like the Goodman is really supportive of all of its artists and anything its artists may want to try. GS: Another successful professional relationship that you have is with actress Mary Beth Fisher – who also stars in Luna Gale. What makes working with her such a good fit? RG: I love Mary Beth so much. I’m so happy to get to work with her again. She really understands the language of my plays and understands my characters and their complexity. She is so smart. It’s interesting, when we’re working on a script, if she says to me, “I’m not sure why my character is saying this right now,” or asks me a question I don’t feel like I can answer, I’ll pay real close attention to it because she such a methodical actor. Everything has to be genuinely motivated for her. I feel like if she can’t find the reason a character’s doing something, it probably isn’t there and I probably need to work on it. Which can be kind of maddening sometimes [laughs], but I think that she challenges me in such a good way that she actually makes my plays better. GS: I’m sure she’ll be very flattered when she reads that. RG: [Laughs] If she doesn’t know it already, then it’s my fault. I should have told her that a million years ago. But I hope she knows it already. GS: Did you always intend for your plays to be “unflinching works about contentious social issues”? RG: No [laughs]. I’ve always started with characters in my head. I do think that people are products of their environment, so it ends up being about larger social issues. GS: The influence of religion, good and bad, on families continues to be a popular topic in the 21st century. Did religion play a role in your family life with your parents? RG: It did. My dad was from Boston, and he was Jewish. My mom was from Alabama, and she was from a Southern

Baptist family. I think that combination always made religion an open question in my household, even though we all went to the Episcopal Church because that was probably the most liberal-minded church in my small town. I guess it did in that I think that we were always free to examine the positive and negative aspects of religion in my household. GS: Social workers, like schoolteachers, are also undervalued by contemporary society. Is Luna Gale a chance for you to shine a light on social workers and the important work they do? RG: I hope it is and I hope what people come away with, if nothing else, is that because of budget cuts and underfunding we’re asking people to simply do more than is humanly possible in terms of taking care of kids at risk. I think the media is really quick to focus on the most horrific cases where something has gone wrong, but they don’t spend any time talking about the good work that people do on a daily basis. GS: You are an assistant professor in Northwestern University’s Department of Radio-TV-Film and core faculty in Northwestern’s MFA in Writing for the Screen+Stage program. What does it mean to you to be affiliated with Northwestern? RG: I’ve got a really terrific relationship that I feel really lucky to have. The School of Communications, in which I teach, values having working artists on faculty and gives us time to do our creative work in conjunction with our teaching. I have some really inspiring colleagues. I’m in the Radio, Television and Film Department, with the Theater Department nearby and the Performance Studies Department downstairs. I have all these amazing playwrights and directors in my building. When they say it’s an arts campus, it really does feel like an arts campus [laughs]. It’s a wonderful place to work. GS: What do like best about working in Evanston and the location? RG: Next Theater has always been a great theater I think. They do such interesting and provocative work. Lulu’s, which is my favorite noodle shop, is closing I understand. I don’t know if it’s true or not, but that’s what I heard. I hope not. The other thing I really love about being on our campus and in Evanston is it is an amazing bird population they are on the shore of the lake, especially in the spring and fall when the birds are migrating through. I have sat in my office and looked at the tree out my window and have seen warblers. Just yesterday I was eye to eye with a Sharp-shinned Hawk. I was just staring at it [laughs]. love & marriage Love-dovey language and sarcastic comments? It’s in the cards

In the days (hours?) leading up to Valentine’s Day, the greeting card aisles of local grocery stores, pharmacies and gift shops were crammed with folks wringing their hands. This might be one of the only times this year that you’ll buy your Love a card, and it needs to be just right. I normally wouldn’t have thought twice about this exercise, but a recent conversation with a reader of this column gave me pause. He hates buying cards like the ones offered for Valentine’s Day and anniversaries. “Why do I want a card that talks about what a dope I am the other 364 days?” he notes. “But the other cards are over-the-top, lovey-dovey things that don’t sound at all like me either. It’s ridiculous.” You’d think that the greeting card companies could produce something for this poor guy, given that folks like him have been sending handwritten valentines to one another since the Middle Ages. The concept took off in Victorian-era England, and by the mid1800s a Massachusetts-based printer and artist named Esther Howland was among the

first to produce Valentine’s Day cards in America. Her elaborate designs included multiple layers, lift-up flaps and embossed flowers sure to impress recipients. Valentines were expected to be particularly popular this year, since a greater number are exchanged when the holiday is celebrated during the week. But I agreed that my reader’s dissatisfaction with greeting cards had merit, and I scoped out the nearest greeting card aisle to prove it. My eye landed first on a black-and-white photo of a couple waltzing on cobblestone street beside an arched stone bridge – maybe a remnant of Victorian-era England. “Time only flies if we let it get away without savoring every moment. But if we take our chances to slow down and let ourselves feel deep gratitude for every single day it all adds up to a sense of abundance.” Nice thoughts, but the words sound like a Nicholas Sparks script, not something likely to cross my lips. I kept looking. “If I could do it over again there’s only one thing I’d change…I’d have found you sooner so I could love you longer.” And then there was this one: “I found my

center when I found you.” Scattered among them were the sarcastic cards that my reader finds equally troubling. The worst of which reads, “There’s no one in the world who makes me feel the way you do. It’s a mixture of passionate love and the vague feeling I’m in trouble.” Nevertheless, greeting cards are big business in this country. It’s a safe bet event will aid fight against cancer ■ by joanna brown The National Cancer Institute estimates that there are 13 million people living with cancer in the United States. And there are 26 North Shore women betting on a cure. The Auxiliary Board of the University of Chicago Cancer Research Foundation will host its annual benefit at Wilmette’s Michigan Shores Club on Saturday, March 1. The gala, which bears the theme Bet on a Cure, will include dining, live music, casino games, and both silent and live auctions to benefit cancer research at the University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center.

We have some control over how we help.” Every three years, Auxiliary Board members select three doctors doing cancer research for the board to underwrite for three years each. Funds raised at Bet on a Cure will benefit Jill de Jong, Peter O’Donnell and Michael Spiotto in the form of unrestricted grants. De Jong is focused on the treatment of children with cancer and blood diseases. O’Donnell is dedicated to working to treat patients with genitourinary cancers; specifically, he uses patients’ genetic profiles for chemotherapy choices. And Spiotto’s researches the treatment of head and neck cancers in identifying the

Her event co-chair, Wendy CrawfordSchultz, agreed. “We have access to the doctors to see how their research is progressing and being integrated at the University of Chicago and across the country,” Crawford-Schultz said. “It is absolutely intoxicating to listen to their passion for what they are doing and to know that we are a small part of it. “New ideas don’t always have the opportunity to be explored,” she continued. “Many times the only way for these doctors to explore a new idea or a new approach is through private funding. Before they can apply for a federal grant, they rely on boards like ours in order to lay the groundwork for their research.” The University of Chicago Cancer Research Foundation Auxiliary Board was founded in 1951 by North Shore resident Stephanie Howell and incorporated in 1959. The board has raised almost $3 million for cancer research since that time. For both Aldrich and CrawfordSchultz, the Bet on a Cure event is a labor of love. “We’re all touched by cancer, and it’s not going away,” said Crawford-Schultz, who lost her father to cancer in 2007, “but people are living longer with it and with a better quality of life.” The board’s goal is to host a fun evening and raise funds to advance cancer research. But it also hopes to recruit some new members that evening. “We are small but mighty, and we are looking to grow,” Crawford-Schultz said. “We need the energy of having additional board members who are passionate for the same things that we are.” Find more information about Bet on a Cure and the auxiliary board at www. uccrfab.org ■

Longtime chef sticks to simplicity and quality ■ by katie rose mceneely Cesar Gutierrez is the executive chef at Pinstripes in Northbrook. How did you start cooking? My mom was a chef and when I was six years old, she opened a restaurant. I started cooking in my mom’s restaurant but didn’t think of it as a career — as things progressed, I ended up working as a dishwasher and worked my way up as prep cook as I tried to figure out what I wanted to do. I ended up loving the kitchen and worked my way up to an executive chef at Lettuce Entertain You. I really took on my career and became a corporate trainer and eventually ran a restaurant in Chicagoland. Years cooking? A little bit over 20 years. Best recipe tweak? I’ve learned it’s more about simplicity and quality of ingredients. So, if a recipe has too many ingredients, the first thing I think about is what’s really essential. Signature dish? I have many; one of my favorite dishes that I came up with is our Ahi Tuna Gnocchi. All of our chefs come up with different dishes, but I oversee the locations, so I’ll get one or two in there. Favorite cuisine to make? What I’m most comfortable with is Italian. My favorite is more or less comfort food. I don’t know if “comfort food” has a style. What do you like to eat at home?

Comfort, but also healthy — I think healthy foods like a piece of fish over a steak. Worthwhile gadget? A ruler. It allows me to keep consistency with cuts. Favorite cookbook? The most recent cookbook I read was “Heat” about Mario Batali. It’s really fun. Favorite fruit or vegetable? Avocado. My favorite vegetable is, I think, Brussels sprouts. Funniest or most memorable kitchen incident? There’s so many memorable moments. It didn’t happen at Pinstripes — but a customer came in to the restaurant and she asked the server, “Is your chef creative?” It was a Saturday night, super busy. I went to the table and the lady was there with her boyfriend. She was also a vegetarian, and I was like, “okay, you’re in a steak house, you’re a vegetarian, and you’re wondering if I’m creative.” So I made her something. That was four or five years ago — to this day, that customer calls me and finds out where I’m working and comes to the restaurant that I’m at. I get behind the line and make something — she’s very loyal, to this day. It makes me happy that she keeps coming back. Pinstripes is located at 1150 Willow Road in Northbrook. Recipe: Housemade Linguini Carbonara

In a sauté pan add 2 tablespoons bacon fat, 1 tablespoon minced garlic and 2 pinches each of salt and pepper. Sauté until golden brown, do not burn. Deglaze pan with ½ cup white wine and reduce liquid by half. Add 5 cups heavy cream, ½ cup parmesan cheese and ¼ cup peas to the sauté pan and bring to a boil. Meanwhile, drop 3 pounds linguine into a pot of boiling water and cook until al dente. Drain well. Add drained pasta into the sauce and toss to incorporate and coat the noodles. Remove sauce and noodles from heat and add 4 egg yolks. Toss to incorporate into the sauce. Using tongs, swirl the pasta onto the plate to give the noodles height. Sprinkle ¼ cup chopped bacon around the noodles. In a small bowl, toss 1 ounce snow peas, 1 ounce sundried tomato, 1 ounce shaved Parmesan cheese, 1 tablespoon red wine vinaigrette and 2 pinches Kosher salt together. Place vegetable mixture on top of pasta; serves six.

Local real estate broker confident ZIP code issue in Mettawa can be resolved ■ by bill mclean Identity theft is not rampant in Mettawa, a Lake County village named after an area Potawatomi settlement and saddled with two ZIP codes (60045, 60048). But identify confusion has emerged for homeowners who put their homes on the market in Mettawa’s 60048 ZIP code district. Sixty percent of the village’s 552 residents live on 60048-designated properties; the rest own homes with a 60045 ZIP code. Late last summer Joanna Koperski, a broker at @properties in Lake Forest, conducted research on showings of properties in Mettawa’s 60045 ZIP code versus showings of properties in Mettawa’s 60048 ZIP code. She wanted to know the reason why showings were more frequent in Mettawa-60045 than they were in Mettawa-60048 during the past two years, and why homes of comparable value in the same time span had an average time on the market of 289 days for Mettawa-60045 properties compared to 459 days for Mettawa-60048 properties. “Properties in the Mettawa-60048 were entirely appropriated by Libertyville, beginning with their tax records, and continuing through to the Internet,” Koperski said. “This contrasts with Mettawa-60045, which shows up as Mettawa in all cases.” Mettawa-60048 residents live in Libertyville’s school district and pay property taxes to Libertyville, while Mettawa- 6 0 045 residents live in Lincolnshire’s school district and pay property taxes to Lincolnshire.

Koperski furthered her investigation, discovering the Post Office sees Mettawa-60048 as Libertyville based on its Every Door Direct, the Post Office’s popular marketing tool. Koperski also noted that most of the home search sites, which are important to both buyers and real estate brokers, show the Mettawa-60048 homes as based in Libertyville. “In short,” she said, “Mettawa-60048 is not identified as Mettawa when looked at by the public.” Koperski informed her Mettawa-60048 clients of the issue. “They were appalled,” she said. “As a

broker, it’s difficult to market a Mettawa property to the public effectively if it doesn’t show up on the Internet as being located in Mettawa.” Koperski received instructions for a ZIP code change by the U.S. Postal Service. It involves paperwork and a survey delivered by the U.S. Postal Service to Mettawa residents within the 60048 postal code district. If 51 percent of the respondents were to receive the survey and approve the change, Mettawa’s entire population would live in a 60045 postal code district. “The most important reason to pursue the ZIP code change from 60048 to 60045 is the

issue of Mettawa’s compromised identity,” Koperski said. “I don’t expect much resistance from residents, and the U.S. Postal Service is very interested in resolving issues of community identity. My hope is that the residents would see a benefit to such a change. It would not affect the current taxes or the school systems now serving the village. “It would unify the village,” she added. Koperski said the ZIP code issue will be addressed Feb. 18 at the Mettawa Village Board meeting. Mettawa Mayor Casey Urlacher declined to be interviewed about the ZIP code issue before the meeting. ■

sports@northshoreweekend.com The four Sullivan brothers of Wilmette were sitting with their little sister, Claire, at a dinner table about five years ago when they convinced her to try new music for her floor routine at gymnastics meets. The tune was — and still is — the iconic theme music of “Monday Night Football.” Claire Sullivan, now a sophomore and first-year Loyola Academy gymnast, gave it whirl. She liked it then. She likes it now and still uses it today, even though MNF isn’t exactly appointment TV for the Rambler. “I don’t watch it,” a smiling Sullivan admitted last weekend. But she was worth watching at the New Trier Regional in Northfield on Feb. 7. Sullivan earned four automatic berths to this week’s Niles North Sectional (Feb. 13), including the one she secured after scoring an 8.85 (4th place) on floor. “Boys perk up in gyms when they hear Claire’s floor music,” said Sheli Sullivan, Claire’s mom and Loyola’s official girls gymnastics sponsor after earning ACEP (American Coaching Effectiveness Program) certification. A level 10 club gymnast at Wilmette Gymnastics, Sullivan thrilled at least six captivated WG grade-schoolers while performing on beam at the regional. Near the end of her routine, moments before her dismount, Sullivan paused, looked right at the seated youngsters 10 yards away and smiled hard at them. All beamed back at her. Sullivan then somehow stayed focused atop the daunting apparatus and completed a runner-up routine worth 9.475 points. “Claire is so good at not breaking under pressure,” said New Trier sophomore Peyton Burns, another level 10 Wilmette Gymnastics member and first-year high school

competitor. “I have never seen her fall on beam; she’s solid up there, so solid.” Sullivan also advanced to a sectional in the all-around (35.8, 5th) and on bars (9.325, 3rd). “I’ve liked gymnastics for most of my life,” said Sullivan, who plans to try out for lacrosse at LA this spring. “Not a lot of people can do it and it’s fun. I remember doing cartwheels at home when I was little. “I knocked over a lot of stuff.” Perhaps her brothers righted the fallen furniture and replaced the busted lamps and picture frames. They were always there for her, in addition to being the forces behind her floor-music shift. All but New Trier graduate Michael Sullivan, 25, studied and played sports at Loyola Academy. Her other brothers are Peter, 23, Matt, 21, and Tommy, 23, a former Ramblers lacrosse captain and current lax club player at Boston College. Claire Sullivan was the lone Rambler competing at the regional. But she was hardly alone. She had plenty of “sisters” supporting her every move. The “sibs” doubled as New Trier Trevians. “It’s like the team adopted me,” an appreciative Sullivan said afterward. “It was so nice of them.” The friendliness and sportsmanship displayed toward Sullivan by New Trier’s girls throughout the regional buoyed Sheli Sullivan. “It’s wonderful,” the proud mom said between Claire’s floor and beam routines. “I’m thrilled how they’re interacting with her, cheering her on, supporting her in such a different environment [compared to club meets]. You just don’t see that often. Plus look at all the little [Wilmette Gymnastics] kids rooting for her. “Gymnastics,” she added, “has helped Claire develop poise and perseverance and a strong work ethic. But what I am most

grateful for is her positive attitude, and that grew because of all her years training as a gymnast. She’s a great kid.”

NT, seeking its third straight state appearance, topped the four-team field with 143.85 points in the first round of the state series. Coach Jennifer Pistorius’ crew amassed 12 automatic sectional berths and 11 at-large sectional tickets. “Our bars [routines] were awesome,” she said, alluding to the range of scores from Claire Egerter’s at-large mark of 8.7 to Samantha Stoddart’s winning 9.55. In between: Taylor Kwok’s 8.9, Stephanie Steen’s 9.0 and Burns’ 9.175 (4th place). The Trevs sparkled on vault as well, going 2-3-4 in the event. Burns silvered with a 9.25 score, followed by Stoddart’s 9.15 and Egerter’s 8.95. Stoddart also finished runner-up in the all-around (37.05) and on floor (9.325). Pistorious praised the routines performed by NT lead-off competitors Kwok (bars and vault), Lauren Chung (beam) and Ana Dobrowski (floor). The three sophomores combined for four at-large berths. “They set a nice tone for us,” the coach said. ■

The HP junior came up with six steals in his team’s 41-40 victory over Libertyville on Feb. 8. He also finished with 10 points. sports@northshoreweekend.com It’s the most wonderful time of the year for Lake Forest High School senior Brittany Moccia. It’s time for conference, regional, sectional and state girls gymnastics meets. And it’s a good time to shine atop the mats. Moccia has been blindingly good the past two weekends, capturing the all-around championship at the North Suburban Conference meet on Jan. 31 and following that up with another all-around title at the New Trier Regional on Feb. 7. “Brittany’s season started [on Jan. 31],” Scouts first-year coach Alison Gildemeister said. “This is the point in the season she likes to turn it on and perform. She’s fun to watch.” Moccia had to climb the highest step of the awards podium four times at New Trier. Her top all-around aggregate of 37.825 featured first-place efforts on vault (9.4), beam (9.55) and floor (9.4). She collected a silver medal for swinging to a 9.475 on bars and advanced to this week’s Niles North Sectional (Feb. 13) with the maximum five berths. “What I like about this part of the season is seeing how everybody is relaxed and having fun,” said Moccia, a member of the Scouts’ sixth- and fifth-place teams at state the past two seasons. “Everybody,” she added, “is in a good mood. I’m excited about what’s next.” After the meet and before the awards ceremony, Moccia was at peace, satisfied and confident. She had found a good place, one in which she wanted to hang around for a while. “The more relaxed your are, the better the outcome in whatever you are doing,” Moccia said a week after scoring a personal-best 9.55 on bars at the NSC Meet at Libertyville High School. “My first two years as a gymnast [at LFHS], I was nervous. But that changed beginning with the end of last season.” Her junior season was a trying one, having to deal with a busted middle finger on her right hand for most of the regular season. She suffered the break at the end of vault in a dual at

Moccia returned in time for the state series and helped the Scouts land another team berth. “Brittany has always been good at being able to retain her skills and the strength of her routines right after [holiday] breaks,” said former Scouts standout Kylie Carlson, a Vanderbilt University freshman thinking about majoring in either neuroscience or chemistry. “She proved that again when she came back the way she did after being injured for so long last year.” Moccia reflected briefly last weekend on how the sport has impacted her life off the mats. “I don’t know exactly what I’d be like without gymnastics,” said Moccia, who tied for 12th place on floor (9.45) at state as a sophomore and performed as a cheerleader at football games her junior and senior years. “But I do know I probably wouldn’t be as confident as I am now. Gymnasts — we do live in our own little world. “But I’ve learned valuable life lessons because of gymnastics.” Nearly three months after her junior season, Moccia absorbed what it felt like to be national champion. The Gurnee-based Ultimate Gymnastics club member competed at the Junior Olympics Eastern Nationals (Level 9) on Battle Creek, Mich., where she topped the floor-exercise field. “Big stages bring out the best in her, which is a great trait to have as a competitive athlete,” Carlson said. “I remember her rising to the occasion at big meets and doing well when it really mattered for our teams.” Notable: Moccia’s all-around score (37.825) at the regional matched the score former New Trier Trevian Kerry Scafidi earned at last year’s state meet; Scafidi placed fourth in the all-around. … Lake Forest scored a season-high and second-place 133.1 points at the NT Regional in Northfield on Feb. 7. Scouts sophomore Sara Rossman extended her season by qualifying as an at-large sectional entrant in the all-around (33.225), on vault (8.4) and on beam (8.375), while junior teammate Laura Blake qualified to the sectional with an at-large mark of 8.475 on beam. … A power outage at New Trier’s Northfield campus on Feb. 6 forced meet officials to postpone the regional for a day. ■

Boys Basketball: The junior standout came up with another productive performance in the team’s home overtime victory over state-ranked St. Viator 87-78 on Feb. 8. Boudreaux erupted for a career high 40 points and snared down 20 rebounds. He was 15 for 15 at the foul line. Junior guard Noah Karras did his part, connecting on 3 of 4 from behind the arc and finishing with 17 points. Senior guard Jack Kauss tallied 10 points and five rebounds. It was the sixth straight win for the Scouts (18-4, 7-3), who outscored St. Viator 13-4 in the extra period. He’s a year-round wrestler, who’s been around the block a few times,” said New Trier head coach Marc Tadelman. “He’s wrestled a competitive schedule this winter. For the second consecutive year, the Lake Forest High School competitive dance team placed first in the Large Varsity Pom competition at the National Team Dance Championships at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando on Feb. 1-2. The Scouts also placed fifth in the Large Varsity Jazz division. ESPN taped the championships and is expected to air the competition in March. The Scouts scored 94 points for their winning routine on a 100-point scale. The previous year Lake Forest had won with a score of 90. “People win and lose titles by 10ths of a point,” Lake Forest coach Nikki Lazzaretto said. “Improving by four points in the Pom world is huge.” Senior captain Maddie Neil said competitive dance requires athleticism and discipline. “It’s a whole different level of dance,” she said. “It requires technique and the ability to execute a lot of tricks.” This year’s Lake Forest squad was particularly athletic. “We were able to add a lot of different turns and moves,” junior Maddie Sheridan said. Added Lazzaretto: “I think our team is really known for our technique and synchronization. We stepped up the choreography this year because a lot of teams chase the winner. We wanted to raise the bar for ourselves.”

Since the IHSA state competition was the same weekend as nationals, the Scouts entered a varsity reserve team in the sectional. While Neil, Sheridan and company would have loved to compete for a state title, there was no way the Scouts were passing up a chance to repeat as national champs. In fact, the Scouts placed their full attention on winning the title at Disney World. “Everybody asks us if we went on any rides,” Lazzaretto said. “We were 100 percent business when we were down there.”

Nineteen girls competed for the Scouts at the national competition: Seniors Jennie Lepman (co-captain), Maddie Neil (co-captain), Margot Dempsey, Rachel Gaye, Cheyenne Tilford, Rachel Gaye and Jessie Hennum; juniors Sheridan, Clara Reinkemeyer, Klaire Kaptrosky, Katie Bertram, Ansley Ashmore, Claire Milligan, Sydney Golde and Emily Poth; sophomore Nicolette Stern; and freshmen Abby Bertram, Sarah Kuetemeyer and Meg Nemickas. Neil said all of the Scouts’ work paid off. “We’re all positive people and we push each other to perform well,” she said. “We enjoyed the experience so much.” ■

The 5-foot-9 Keller, a three-year starter, eclipsed the career mark (705) of 2010 graduate Claire Dimario, who currently is playing tennis at Amherst College. Club Swimming LF Swim Club: Competing in the boys 10 and under, Colin Kingsley set a state record in the 500 free (5:27.23) at the Schroeder A+ Meet in Brown Deer, Wis., on Feb. 2. Meanwhile, Mary Grace King set an 8 and under meet record in the 100 free (1:07.22). Middle School Basketball Lake Bluff: Under the direction of coach Kurt Kurtzhals,

Hall of Fame Highland Park HS: He earned saves — in two sports. Jason Zaremski (HPHS, 1994) stopped shots in soccer and took the mound as a relief pitcher during a decorated prep career in baseball. He and former soccer standout Juan-Pablo Galvan (HPHS, ’98) were honored as HPHS Athletic Hall of Fame inductees before a varsity basketball game at the school on Jan. 31. (’94) and baseball (’93, ’94), Zaremski ranks in the top 10 all-time at HPHS in runs batted in for a season, saves for a season and ERA for a season. During his senior season, he caught for two future professional pitchers (Tony Cogan and Sean Johnston) after playing mostly third base as a junior. He continued his baseball career at Emory (Ga.) University, where he started for four seasons, set several school marks and was named to the school’s alltime baseball team in ’10. Zaremski is an attending physician/faculty member for the Division of Sports Medicine/Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation — University of Florida Department of Orthopedics & Rehabilitation. Galvan competed as a four-year varsity midfielder at HPHS, garnering all-state honors after his senior season and finishing with 64 career points (ninth all-time at HPHS). His career assist total (24) ranks second all-time at the school. After each of the ’96 and ’97 seasons, he was the Giants’ MVP and an all-CSL North and all-sectional selection.

At the College Level Women’s Basketball

Lena Munzer: The Yale University freshman guard was honored as the NCAA Division I Athlete of the Week by Women Play Ball, an online magazine dedicated to female athletes. Munzer, a four-year standout at Highland Park High School, was recognized for her play on Feb. 4 following her team’s games against Columbia (13 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals) and Cornell. She is averaging 5.7 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game for the Bulldogs (9-9, 3-1).

At the Olympic Level

Freestyle Ski Team Aaron Blunck: As a member of the U.S. freestyle skiing team, the 17-year-old has a crack at a gold medal at the Sochi Winter Olympic. Son of former New Trier High School quarterback Michael Blunck, the Colorado native will be competing in the freeski halfpipe. The event is set for Feb. 18. His biggest fan? That would be his grandmother, Judy Blunck, who has lived in Winnetka for 42 years after growing up in Highland Park.

Girls Basketball: This duo led the way as the Trevians (23-2, 8-1) topped visiting Niles West 63-42 on Feb. 7. Boehm tallied 21 points and seven rebounds, while Pedi added 13 points and 11 boards. Alexa Czyzynski helped out with 12 points and five assists. On Feb. 8, NT claimed a 51-38 nonconference victory over visiting Galesburg, Meg Neuhaus, Isabella Bosco and Czyzynski scored 10 points each. Jackie Welch was credited with seven assists, while Pedi produced seven points and seven rebounds. On Feb. 4, Boehm had 18 points and eight rebounds in the team’s 55-31 road win at Libertyville. Gymnastics: Ablin qualified automatically in three events at the Deerfield Regional on Feb. 4, highlighting HP’s fourth-place showing (122.575 points). The senior tied for third place on vault (8.95), finished fourth in the all-around (34.125) and took fifth on bars (8.725). Days later she found out she also qualified on floor with an atlarge score of 8.65. Spitz advanced as an atlarge qualifier on bars (8.225) and floor (8.60). Club Wrestling: This 80-pounder claimed runner-up honors in the 9-10 age group at the Libertyville Wildcat Scuffle on Feb. 9. Sam Volpe recorded one pin and placed third at 105 pounds in the 11-12 age group, while Sean Coughlan took fourth in the 13-14 100-pound division. Earlier this season, the Lake Forest Mat Club had three placers at the Niles West Wolverine Open: Klaus Anger (4th, 85 pounds), Volpe (2nd, 105) and Coughlan (4th at 95).

Middle School Wrestling: He turned in a stellar showing in the Deer Path Invitational on Feb. 1. He pinned three opponents on his way to the 145-pound championship. Deer Path, which placed sixth in the 12-team field, also had three runner-up finishes: Alex Caloway at 65 pounds, Bennett Duggan at 80 and Caleb Durbin at 112. The other placers include Chris Wasser (4th, 119), Cade Coughlin (4th, 155), Jake Kovanda (5th, 70), Cole Jensen (5th, 100), Turner Ferris (5th, 215), Matt Damidott (6th, 85), Quinn Dailey (6th, 90), Patrick Roemer (7th, 70), Bridger Gunderson (7th, 105), Sam Volpe (7th, 105), Nick Kovanda (7th, 126) and Fin Hulseman (7th, 215). ■

Libertyville topped Grant 214 ½-192 for the team title.

Highland Park HS Solo act. Senior Dom Ciancio will be the lone Giants wrestler competing in this weekend’s sectional at Barrington. Ciancio, who has a sparkling 33-3 record, just missed advancing to the 152-pound final at the Libertyville Regional on Feb. 8. His lost a 9-7 overtime decision to Waukegan’s Michael Carbajal. He ended up with a third-place medal. Meanwhile, six HP wrestlers just missed making it out. The fourth-place finishers were Aaron Ferrer (120), Andrew Cohen (126), Brandon Galvan (138), John Ciancio (145), Spencer Jacobson (160) and Luis Castellanos (182). Heavyweight Bryan Fiorenza (15-15) finished in the top six. Cohen, who ended the season with a 28-10 record, dropped a heart-breaking 3-2 decision to Zion-Benton Zach Ellis in his third-place match. Galvan (23-8) was eliminated by Libertyville’s Tyler Brooks 5-1. ■

For Susie and Tom, life heats up in Tucson

We like to go to Tucson, Ariz. in the spring — right when you need a break from this kind of Chicago weather. It’s usually 80 degrees there. We stay at the Windmill Suites in northern Tucson by the Catalina Foothills. They have a swimming pool and spa. It’s also located in a nice shopping area, with boutiques and specialty restaurants. We go hiking in Sabino Canyon. We take a backpack with lunch and a camera. We take the tram to the furthest point — it’s at least a two-hour hike back. You see the occasional roadrunner. We stop to see waterfalls. It’s absolutely gorgeous. We also like to go to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, which is a combination zoo and botanical garden. The habitats are beautiful — very welcoming. They have a hummingbird aviary that is so fun. If you have bright colors, they come right

up to you. One of our favorite things is to go to a gourmet grocery store that has a section with prepared foods and a wonderful wine selection. If we time it right, we go when the sun is setting, and we sit out on their covered porch and watch it set over the mountains. Our favorite restaurant for breakfast is in Tohono Chul Park.
