Remembering Harold’s special visit ■ by jake jarvi We were saddened to learn of the passing of North Shore resident and Hollywood icon Harold Ramis on Monday. Four years ago, the witty writer/director sat down to speak with our sister publication, Sheridan Road. As big fans of the films he’d directed — Groundhog Day, Caddyshack, Multiplicity, National Lampoon’s Vacation, Analyze This — and the films he wrote and starred in (Ghostbusters, Animal House, Meatballs, Stripes, and others), the crew was nervous as we waited to meet the man who’d made us laugh for so many years. He even seemed a little nervous himself when he walked in for the interview/photo shoot, but as he settled into a chair and into his natural rhythms, he set us all at ease. For more than an hour he spoke on topics from breaking into the movie business, the funny sides of traveling and having an MRI, and the state of comedy, and he offered an inside look at the process behind crafting a classic like Ghostbusters. He was approachable, quick-witted, and warm. It felt less like an interview and more like an informal chat with a hilarious pal. He was open about his successes, his perceived shortcomings, and his life on the North Shore. Having grown up in Chicago and first climbing the ranks of comedy through Second City, it seems natural that he’d return after leaving Los Angeles. He revealed that he and his wife chose to reside in Glencoe because of both the community and the perfect house they found. He made his office in Highland Park because when he first toured it, his film Multiplicity was listed on the marquee of the Highland Park Movie Theater across the street. So as the film industry says goodbye to a talented filmmaker who had a knack for combining his passion for philosophy with precision comedy, we at The North Shore Weekend say goodbye to a neighbor — and a great guy who really made us laugh. Visit SheridanRd.com to hear an extended version of our conversation with Harold Ramis. ■ Harold Ramis

Clean up movies for youngsters — and a nod to a comedy original

O

ne night during a recent family vacation in Florida, our children turned the channel to the Cartoon Network. Expecting to encounter some mindless fare such as SpongeBob SquarePants, instead a movie was playing called Firehouse Dog. All five of use watched it and — amazingly, given the age range from 6 to 50 — all really enjoyed it. In fact, the kids watched it again when the 2007 film came on the following night. Why were we engaged? For the kids, it offered a good vs. evil tale featuring heroes and danger — and a happy ending, thanks to the dog’s efforts. For me, it was entertaining — and the cleanest family movie I’d seen in many years. Too often, I’ve taken our children to a so-called kids’ movie — often animated — and been appalled by the characters’ bad language, crude bodily noises and other detritus that makes a parent squirm (of course, the 15 minutes of movie previews we sit through are even worse). I’m not saying the plots are weaker now compared to decades past or that everything should be sugarcoated — plenty of long-ago Disney movies were as dark as could be, and watching The Wizard of Oz has shaken generations of youngsters — but the bathroom humor and sexual references were never needed. Obviously, the mannerless movies pay

— halfway through 2013, it was reported, Hollywood had put out all of one movie rated G. With the Academy Awards on tap this weekend, it seemed a good time to explore why more movies appropriate for the entire family aren’t in the theaters. Bill McLean talks with North Shore families about this topic in these pages. Speaking of movies, many are lamenting the $ $ $ $ $ $ death of North Shore resident Harold Ramis. Thru March 15th Though “Ghostbusters” and other well-known fare were mentioned prominently in his obituaries (and Lord knows they weren’t exactly appropriate for youngsters but great for adults), I’ll always recall his excellence as a writer for and actor in SCTV. chicago hinsdale lake forest winnetka 773 404 2020 630 655 0497 847 295 8370 847 441 0969 What’s that, you ask? Rude awakening

Finding appropriate movies for youngsters is tougher than ever ■ by bill mclean

"It's hard to find innocent G-rated movies to watch," says Sarah Steiner, shown with husband Chris and their three boys Ollie, Caleb and Ethan.

photography by joel lerner

Carli Betman remembers a time when her favorite kid movies featured princesses, little animals, pristine dialogue and feel-good plots. Most were G-rated flicks. The Northbrook resident and Glenbrook North High School junior enjoyed “Despicable Me 2,” a PG-rated film that is up for a nomination in the animation category at the Academy Awards on March 2. “The characters in it were outgoing and friendly,” Betman says. “But characters also shot laser beams in scenes. “I could see parents getting a little nervous about letting their kids see a movie like that.” Penny Robbins, the director of Kinderhaven Preschool Academy in Lake Forest, wonders, “Is there any movie in theaters without a weapon in it or an in-your-face theme?” Such films are nearing Dodo-bird status, thanks mostly to an ogre. When “Shrek” hit the theaters in 2001, parents accompanied their kids and laughed with them during some scenes. In others — the innuendo-laced ones — they stifled laughs and squirmed a bit while their offspring stared at the screen stone-faced. “Shrek” was a monster hit all over the world. “[The movie] completely changed the animation field,” writes Scott Mendelson in a piece, “Disney’s ‘Frozen’ Proves Failure of PG Rating,” on forbes. com. “[‘Shrek’] earned its PG for foul language and low-key sexual innuendos, none of which stopped it from earning $484 million at the global box office.” With Oscars being handed out on Sunday, some North Shore parents and youngsters point out that few movies these days, animated or otherwise, are family-friendly, given their propensity for coarse language, drug references and other fare. Some studios prefer a PG rating for their animated films, fearing a goody-goody G rating wouldn’t appeal to teens accustomed to movies with an edge. Mendelson noted a G rating in the 1980s and 1990s was the “de-facto rating” for an animated picture. “Moviemakers try to make money, and we try to educate our kids,” says Lake Forest resident Brenda Marwede, a family counselor and mother of three teenagers. “Some of the movies that are getting made … they’re like junk food, all over the place and hard to resist for many. “Movies, it seems, make more money when they have

a lot of shock value,” she adds. “Moviemakers then think they have to continue to boost the shock value the next time they make one. Viewers are more and more desensitized.” Samantha Stoddart’s favorite Disney movie of all-time is “Miracle,” the story of the gold-medal-winning USA men’s hockey team at the 1980 Winter Olympics. “The best movies are ones that make you feel something — I felt great and I felt inspired while watching that,” says Stoddart, a junior and standout gymnast at New Trier High School. “I watch Disney movies all the time, and I could quote so many lines from so many of them. You’re never too old for a good Disney movie in my mind. “Moviemakers,” she adds, “should be careful because you often live what you see and what you learn. I hope they get back to making more good wholesome movies.” Jon Salomon thinks the movie industry is a healthy escape for all kids, especially when it’s compared to some of the edgy, family-unfriendly stuff running on TV — even the network fare — these days. The Glenbrook South High School junior is a big fan of the penguins in the movie “Madagascar.” “What’s in 99 percent of the movies [rated PG and PG-13] is usually good,” he says. “At times there might be one or two lines with foul language. My parents were aware of that and their message to me was, ‘You can watch the movie but don’t say those [foul] words.’ They’re good parents.” TV shows like “Brady Bunch,” “Leave It to Beaver” and “Lassie” were made into movies. And reruns of the shows — practically every episode of all three presented a moral — will likely continue to air on TV as long as baby boomers breathe. “Kids don’t consider those exciting shows,” Kinderhaven’s Robbins says. “In the past, kids weren’t exposed to having images constantly coming at them like kids experience today. So much of what kids, especially tweens [ages 8-13], are watching today deals with backtalk or kids making fun of adults. “Kids are seeing too many examples of disrespect.” But Lake Forest resident Sarah Steiner, a mother of three young boys, sees hope between the movie-release dates. It’s a local school initiative rated R for … respect. “It recognizes character-building, not just achievement,” she says. “Achievement is a very good thing, but I’ve noticed people are becoming more aware of how essential character is.” ■

DOn’t Let these three FaCts sLIP thrOuGh the CraCks! Buying a new home often involves facing a torrent of new information, from convoluted rates and percentages, to forewarnings, suggestions, tips, advisements, and downright imploration. Unfortunately, few home buyers ever feel truly prepared to make the big decision, and so it becomes incredibly important to find a broker or agent you can truly trust while conducting as much research as possible on your own. All too often, despite this safety net of expert advice and self-directed study, some things still go unnoticed. Here is a brief list of three facts that routinely go unmentioned, undiscovered, and undisclosed. Knowledge is Power Fact #1: Don’t count yourself out until you gather all the information. While the traditional notion behind previous foreclosure would contend that you are financially sunk and therefore ineligible from qualifying for a loan to become a home-owner, in actuality this circumstance is less dire than typically assumed. While it is true that foreclosure remains on your credit rating for up to seven years, large scale governmentbacked lenders such as Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae have begun imposing just three year penalties for foreclosure. Though you may be required to pay a higher down payment or pay slightly higher interest rates, you aren’t disqualified from the dream of home ownership as easily as you may assume. Fact #2: Be sure to check into the housing codes and regulations pertaining to properties you are interested in. Prospective buyers would do well to work diligently to ensure that recent renovations, additions, and improvements were conducted in conjunction with guidelines set by now-starving city planning departments. If you purchase a home with violations, you may be saddled with the responsibility of bringing them to code.

Fact #3: Hire your own people. It is important not to expose yourself to liability by accepting the seller’s offer to use their agent, appraiser, or inspector. THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

Nick Matthew, the world’s top-ranked squash player, is competing in the Windy City Open.

World’s top squash players take the court ■ by david sweet Not only will the world’s best squash players be competing within a quick train ride of the North Shore this weekend — they’ll battle in a room inspired by an English cathedral. The 2014 METROsquash Windy City Open, presented by Guggenheim and Equitrust Life Insurance Company, boasts the biggest field and richest prize purse in its 33-year history. Held in a glass court within the University Club’s Cathedral Hall — replete with an ornate ceiling and painted glass windows — the event started Wednesday with 24 of the top 25 men pros in the world, along with 8 of the top 10 women players.

“Anytime you can watch the best in the world in anything, you should drop what you’re doing and watch.” | Peter Dunne “Anytime you can watch the best in the world in anything, you should drop what you’re doing and watch,” says Peter Dunne, a Lake Forest resident who is a METROsquash board member and vice president of The Jesters, an international organization dedicated to squash. “The field is incredible, even though it’s not the world championship.” Some of the pros even ventured to the North Shore this past week to offer their insights. The world’s top-ranked player, Nick Matthew, put on a clinic for youngsters and played three exhibition games — where he took on two pros at once and won each time — at a North Shore club on Sunday.

The men’s and women’s quarterfinals at the METROsquash Windy City Open will take place Saturday, March 1, with the semifinals the following day and the championships on Monday. This year the event is offering video reviews of let calls (players can request one review per game) along with screens showing instant replays of the fast-paced sport. “We have some production features people will be jazzed about,” says Tournament Director John Flanigan, adding that matches will be broadcast live on Squash TV (psasquashtv.com). “And I’m really excited that the top women players are here for the first time.” METROsquash will receive a financial contribution from the tournament. The non-profit uses squash, academic instruction, and more to help Chicago Public School students realize their potential. Students spend at least three hours a week playing squash and learning sportsmanship in the tight quarters where the game is played, and many go on to top preparatory schools and colleges. The board draws heavily from North Shore residents, who have raised millions of dollars for a new academic and squash center near the University of Chicago campus slated to open in 2015. “I think an event like this is incredibly important to METROsquash,” Dunne says. “The organization benefits from the proceeds, it allows us a venue to promote our success to a big audience, and the kids get to see the world’s best. I want to thank all the members of the University Club, the staff, John Flanigan and (club pro) Mark Heather for putting together such a great event.” More information on the tournament can be found at www.windycityopen.com. Closing of Dominick’s opens up can of worms among shoppers ■ by angelika labno

When Dominick’s across the North Shore and Chicago cleared its shelves in December, consumers were worried about how it might affect their shopping routine. “I was disappointed when they were shutting down, because I think the customer service was really good, and I liked their deli department,” said Wilmette resident Julie Butler. Having to go to its long-time competitor, Jewel Osco, has proven to be a headache for Butler. “The most frustrating part is the long lines and parking,” she says. “It also seems like the Jewel is now out of a lot of things because it’s so crowded. Several times I haven’t been able to find everything I need to get and had to go to another store.” Says Lake Forest’s Lydia Conopeotis, who saw the Dominick’s in Lake Bluff close, “It’s very difficult for the average busy family. For most, these days, grocery shopping is not a once-a-week stop.” Some prayers have been answered in the form of alternate grocers. The vacant Dominick’s buildings from Evanston to Lake Bluff are being picked up by grocery giants such as Mariano’s, Jewel Osco and Whole Foods. Family-owned Sunset Foods is reaping the benefits of increased business. According to Vice President of Marketing Thaddeus Tazioli, its stores are keeping up with the demands and welcoming the

new faces. “We’re celebrating our 77th year in business, so we’ve seen just about anything you can imagine,” he said. “Being ready for business is what we do -- you order a little bit more and work a little bit harder. “It’s not the first time that we’ve seen competitors enter or leave the market; it happens,” he added. “Obviously Dominick’s is a big change in the market landscape, and I think there’s going to be continued changes in the coming year.” For some residents, Dominick’s — which lost tens of millions of dollars in 2013, according to Crain’s Chicago Business — is not missed. “I’m not really mourning the loss; it’s nothing that affects me on a day-to-day basis,” said Highland Park’s Robin Subar. “I hate those giant, giant grocery stores.” A Dominick’s lot does not necessarily have to be taken over by another grocer, Subar points out. “It’d be great to see that land used in a way that would enhance the community,” she says. “I’d love to see a facility with climbing walls and activities for kids that they could do in the winter months.” If there is a need for a grocery store in the community, however, Subar is a proponent of Trader Joe’s — which is about to open in Libertyville — noting its quality products and values. “They have fabulous meals that you don’t have to pay a fortune for,” she says. ■

As a long-time businessman — his full-time job is chairman and CEO of Berlin Packaging, whose 44 plants create containers of plastic, glass and metal that generate hundreds of millions annually in revenue — Berlin was entranced by the business model in minor league baseball. All player salaries are paid by the Diamondbacks, removing a big expense. At the same time, the team receives no money from television rights — meaning attendance is king. Berlin’s chief worry is stadium operations (he invested about $2 million of his own money into Four Winds Field). “We have to execute the customer experience to perfection,” says Berlin. To that end, it is measured carefully. Berlin and his management team have uncovered about three dozen touch points to evaluate. They make sure pleasant, attractive employees collect the money in parking lots. Sweet-smelling food is placed near turnstiles to make fans hungry as they enter Four Winds Field. Employees use stopwatches to discover how long it takes someone at the back of the food line to reach the front. Full-time attendants grace what are, Berlin notes, “the cleanest bathrooms in all of baseball.” And he uses the Net Promoter Score — created by Bain & Co. — to tally results. The ultimate question to fans is: Would you recommend family and friends to go to a Silver Andrew Berlin Hawks game? At this point,

During South Bend Silver Hawks’ home games, kids gravitate to the prominently beaked mascot Swoop, in part because of his dances atop dugouts — but also because of his cotton-candy cologne. Between innings, youngsters play in three-story-high jump houses. When a game ends, children hop on the field to run the bases. “The greatest experience for me is to watch the kids have as much fun as they do,” says Andrew Berlin, a Glencoe resident who owns the Midwest League team. “It’s hard for kids to sit still for nine innings. Entertaining is de rigeur.” Since his purchase of the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Class A affiliate a few years ago, Berlin has introduced changes to lure families to 8,000-seat Four Winds Field. For $15, family members can enjoy Belly Buster Mondays, which includes a game ticket and as much food as one can swallow. Friday nights feature television giveaways.

“You have to run it like a business first, not a vanity purchase … I defy any owner to say he’s having a good time with the team when things aren’t running in the black.” | Andrew Berlin To be sure, Minor League Baseball is known as a hotbed of promotion — the crazier the idea, the better. The Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs offered a free funeral giveaway (estimated cost: $10,000) this past season, while another franchise gave fans a bobble head of “On the Road” author Jack Kerouac. But Berlin’s enticements are working better than most. Attendance soared nearly 70 percent in 2012 and jumped roughly another 20 percent last season. Sellouts of the 71 home games tripled in 2013 (21) from the previous year. Berlin — a limited partner in the Chicago White Sox — started looking into buying a Major League Baseball franchise before landing the Silver Hawks. With teams in the Midwest (such as Milwaukee and St. Louis) not for sale, he targeted the minors. The Silver Hawks had been saved from a near-certain move a few years earlier, and on Nov. 11, 2011 at 11:11 a.m., Berlin bought the team.

Baseball team no minor job for Berlin about 75 percent say “extremely likely,” a large jump from when Berlin took over. “You have to run it like a business first, not a vanity purchase,” says Berlin while sipping a Starbucks coffee in downtown Glencoe. “It was a real project the first couple of years. I defy any owner to say he’s having a good time with the team when things aren’t running in the black.” Though the lion’s share of fans come from South Bend’s suburbs, Berlin hopes to persuade North Shore and Chicago residents vacationing in western Michigan to spend a night at the ballpark. “On the shore, on vacation, there’s not a lot to do at night. We’re an entertainment destination,” says Berlin, who hopes to put billboards on the Kennedy Expressway promoting the team this year. Growing up in Glencoe, Berlin was a Chicago Cubs’ fan “until the ’69 team broke my heart.” He played 16-inch softball in Kalk Park and fondly remembers pickup games where “when you couldn’t see the balls anymore, the night was over.” He earned a bachelor of arts degree at Syracuse University and a law degree at Loyola University. After two years as a commercial litigator, he and his father bought a packaging firm — now Berlin Packaging. Looking ahead, Berlin would love to own a major league franchise one day. But for the moment, the 53-year-old — who takes his 7-year-old and 5-year-old sons to a number of Silver Hawks games — is happy to make his ma rk i n the minors. “The only real complaints we get these days,” he says, “is the hot dogs are too big.” ■

love & marriage

■ by joanna brown It’s Oscar season, which means that couples across the North Shore are flocking to movie theaters to see the nine films that have been nominated for Best Picture. Films that we had neither time for nor interest in over the previous 10 months suddenly become priority one for Date Night. (For the record, you did not see me among the crowds last weekend. I maintained a borderline unhealthy obsession with the Olympic skiing events.) The endeavor is expensive, time-consuming and exhausting. On the other hand, you get 18 hours of great entertainment and the brain stimulation that I missed during my last movie experience: a matinee of The Nut Job, the animated adventures of urban squirrels. The experts say that I also missed out on eight more opportunities to improve my marriage (I did see one of the Best Picture nominees back in December, before the nominations were announced). A study from the University of Rochester found that watching movies that examine the complexities of marriage and discussing the issues as a couple can be just as effective as traditional marriage counseling at curbing divorce rates. For the study, 174 couples were divided into three groups to experience various marriage counseling methods. Couples in the movie group received a list of film titles and instructions to watch one film weekly. They were to then

talk about the marital issues presented in the film and relate them back to their own relationship. The movie method cut the divorce rate of newlywed couples from 24 percent to 11 percent at the three-year mark. This was the same success rate as supervised therapy sessions conducted by trained counselors. The list of 21 movies used in the study is interesting, to say the least: • Dying Young, in which a caregiver falls in love with her terminal patient; they navigate a new relationship that they know can not last. • Indecent Proposal, the 1993 story of a married woman who agrees to have sex with another man for $1 million (to put the discussion in context, that would be $1.6 million in 2014 dollars). • Fools Rush In, in which an unplanned pregnancy forces a marriage between two people of different cultures. • Days of Wine and Roses, a 1962 film about an alcoholic who marries a young woman who he turns into an alcoholic so that they can share his experience. • Adam’s Rib, a 1949 film about lawyers who are spouses arguing opposing sides of a lawsuit involving a woman who shot her husband. Discussion questions asked participants to compare the problems faced in the movie to challenges they faced in their relationship; if the couple in the film had a strong friendship to support each in tough times; and whether

benjamin schwartz/the new yorker collection/www.cartoonbank.com

Can watching movies together be as effective as marriage counseling?

the movie couple did anything affectionate and considerate to each other. Further, study participants considered if the movie partners had expectations of their relationship, and how each partner’s expectations differed. That’s all well and good, but isn’t there marital value in just seeing a movie together – an average date night? Does it require homework to make it a worthwhile experience? I remember seeing the 2010 film Date Night, in which Steve Carell and Tina Fey decide their boring marriage needs a night of romance. Instead, a classic case of mistaken identity gives them a much wilder night than they expected. I don’t know that my husband and I had a deep discussion on the ride home from the theater (I don’t think the movie won much more than a Teen Choice Award), but we got out of the house, we laughed together, and we saw on the big screen that boring isn’t so bad. Tell me about your favorite – and seemingly boring – date nights. Send an email to Joanna@northshoreweekend.com ■

Faith, Hope and Charity Catholic School fourth-graders Eve Dwyer and Molly Power demonstrate a science project about the earth, moon and sun. The Blarney Bash helps support school-related expenditures.

photography by joel lerner

Blarney Bash aims to raise $250,000 for school ■ by bill mclean Imagine being a grade-school teacher today and knowing that 65 percent of your wide-eyed students will have jobs that have yet to be created. (The U.S. Department of Labor came up with that startling statistic.) Administrators and teachers at Saints Faith, Hope & Charity Catholic School in Winnetka are fully aware of it and doing something about it now. “We’re encouraging students to do science, not just read about science,” said Katie Carden, principal at Faith, Hope & Charity (junior kindergarten through eighth grade). “You have to be a visionary in education and you have to tap into the interests of students at a young age through a hands-on approach in the classroom, especially with science and technology. “Science,” she added, “is about doing, digging in, creating. It’s also about honing math and technology skills along the way.” A figure the school would like match or exceed on March 15 is $250,000 — the amount last year’s annual Blarney Bash raised for Faith, Hope & Charity’s Anchors with Heart Fund, which provides educational assistance for families in need and supports school-related expenditures. “In the past, proceeds from the Blarney Bash were used to develop Faith Hope’s state-of-the-art technology program,” said Britt Callahan, a Faith Hope & Charity alumna who is a mother of daughters at

the school and serves as co-chair of the Blarney Bash with Megan Ratke. “FHC is looking to augment its STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering and Math] program by raising money to purchase hands-on [FOSS] kits for each grade in the school.” The school’s technology coordinator, Julie Tuten, added there’s also a need to increase Faith, Hope & Charity’s robot population; it currently stands at one. The addition of a 3D printer would also significantly enhance the learning process for the school’s 314 students. The Blarney Bash starts at 5 p.m. March 15 with an all-school mass led by Fr. Marty O’Donovan. Following the service on St. Patrick’s Day Eve, the Shannon Rovers Irish Piper Band (bagpipes and drums) will lead the congregants to the school’s gym, where Irish jigs instead of jump shots will predominate. Silent and live auctions will be held. Among the auction items: quilts made in class; framed pictures of students in class; a train ride to the city to eat lunch with a faculty member; a “Shoot the Puck” opportunity at a Chicago Blackhawks game; and a Great Escape Day with Principal Carden, during which she will accompany four students to a Chicago Cubs game. The fundraiser also will feature three raffles, including round-trip airfare and a three-night stay at Ventana Inn in Big Sur, Calif. Call Faith, Hope & Charity at (847) 446-0031 to buy Blarney Bash tickets or raffle tickets. ■

Mr. Marley's house for sale: A piece of Hollywood history ■ by donald liebenson

A house in Winnetka made famous by the movie “Home Alone” now includes a putting green.

Ravinia North Shore 2-28 Plumbing ad_Layout 1 2/18/14 11:03 AM Page 1

Fans of John Hughes’ 1990 family classic “Home Alone” who missed out on purchasing “the McCallister home” when it sold in 2012 have another opportunity to own a piece of movie history. The neighboring property, on which sits the so-called Old Man Marley house — whose owner initially gave McCauley Culkin’s young Kevin such a fright — is on the market for $3.1 million. Too bad homes can’t be nominated for Academy Awards for acting, because the three-story, almost 6,900-square-foot house at 681 Lincoln Ave. in Winnetka is nothing like the brooding and sinister abode it was portrayed as onscreen. Owners Dick and Penny Green, who have lived in the house since June 2003, were at cross-purposes when each saw it for the first time. For Dick, it was love at first sight when he saw the spacious backyard that includes a swimming pool and a putting green that he later installed. For Penny, the situation has been like one of those romantic comedies where skepticism blossoms into true love. “I didn’t want anything to do with the house,” she laughs. “I knew it was going to be a big project.” Indeed, she figures there is not a single room that hasn’t been touched in some way. But the home’s location, the welcoming and friendly neighbors, and raising a family on the quintessential small-town tree-lined street, won her heart. “The fact that John Hughes chose this street for ‘Home Alone’ reflects that it’s a great (area),” Dick observes. “Home Alone” was a surprise hit upon its release. For a time it was the biggest-grossing comedy of all time. It is now a holiday perennial on television. “I took a cab from the airport once,” Dick recalls. “The driver had just moved here a month ago from

Kazakhastan. He pulled up to the house, (looked next door) and said, ‘Is that the ‘Home Alone’ house?’ It was 10:30 at night. He started taking pictures and texting friends back home.” More impressive than the home’s cinematic legacy, though, is its architectural pedigree. Benjamin Marshall designed it, gables and all. His credits are stellar, too. Among his best-known buildings include the Drake and Edgewater Beach hotels in Chicago But there is a certain cachet to living in a home used in a popular film and the interest in this particular chapter of this century-old home’s story has generated the most media interest, said realtor Linda Martin of Coldwell Banker. The home will be featured on an upcoming episode of “Open House,” broadcast nationwide on NBC. Martin, who also lives in the neighborhood, and whose home can also be glimpsed in the film, recalled fondly, “(The filming) brought the community together. Everybody would gather at night and we would drink hot cocoa (and watch). It looked like the movie would be amusing and we knew John Hughes was good, but no one ever dreamed it would be this successful.” ■

34 | sports Totally elated: Durbin wins state title

■ by kevin reiterman

sports@northshoreweekend.com Usually, Regis Durbin is not one to show emotion. None whatsoever. That’s just how it is with him. Absolutely, positively, unequivocally. But this … this was different. The Lake Forest High School senior smashed that image to pieces at last weekend’s IHSA Class 3A state meet in Champaign. After beating Oak Park-River Forest’s Andre Lee — a nationally ranked wrestler — 3-1 in overtime in the 195pound semifinals, Durbin did something very un-Durbin like. He went all Dale Earnhardt Jr. In essence, he took … a victory lap. “I’ve never seen him so ebullient,” said Lake Forest

assistant coach Tony Filippo, describing how Durbin sprinted around the mat circle at Assembly Hall. “Usually, he’s all business. “I was a little surprised,” the coach added. “It’s the first time that I’ve ever seen him be so animated.” Then, after beating Lockport’s Tyler Johnson — another nationally ranked competitor who entered the final with an undefeated record — in the championship bout by an ultimate tiebreaker (3-2), Durbin started to run another victory lap. But this time, he went only one quarter of the way before reversing field and racing back to leap into the waiting arms of LF head coach Matt Fiordirosa. Can you say Wheaties commercial? “Just excited,” said Durbin, who became the first wrestler at Lake Forest HS to win a state crown. “In the moment.” His out-of-character victory lap was news at school on Monday.

“A lot of my friends were talking about that,” he said. “It (the semifinal) was such a huge match for me. All of my emotions just came out.” It certainly was a weekend to cherish. In going 4-0 and beating two blue chippers in Champaign, Durbin finished the season 41-0. What he accomplished is even more remarkable, considering that he’s an elite two-sport athlete. He dedicated most of his offseason to football and fine-tuning his quarterbacking skills. “For a kid to win a state title and not be a year-round wrestler is pretty unheard of these days,” said Filippo. “It’s a tribute to his toughness and hard work.” Durbin’s future is bright. He could pursue college football, or he could wrestle at the next level. “He’s on their radar now,” said Filippo, referring to Division I college coaches. ■

Mind-Bender

Scouts guard turns in a whirlwind performance against Stevenson ■ by bill mclean

sports@northshoreweekend.com One of Ryan Bender’s basketball teammates would finish with 43 points and 14 points. An opposing player would end with an uncanny and resplendent total of 57 points. But it was Bender — an unassuming Lake Forest High School senior guard/ forward with only three points through three quarters — who generated the most noise from the Scouts’ packed gym at the end of Stevenson’s unforgettable 95-93 double-overtime defeat of LF on Feb 21. “Crazy,” the ailing 6-foot-1 Bender said between coughs. “The energy in the gym was crazy … and amazing.” He had nobody to blame but himself for the raucous atmosphere, especially at the end of the fourth quarter and the first OT session, as well as at the beginning of the second OT. Bender was an indoor cyclone in the last 3:07 of regulation, beginning with his three-pointer that cut Stevenson’s lead to 73-68. He also collected two steals, hit a free throw, blocked a shot by Patriots junior guard Jalen Brunson (Mr. 57 points), scored a bucket to tie it at 74-74 with 26 ticks left and forced OT with another basket at 0:04. As he smiled wearily and staggered toward his team’s bench to prepare for at least four more minutes of basketball, Lake Forest’s giddy student section chanted, “Ry-an Bender! Ry-an Bender!” Said Bender afterward: “Never heard that before.” Bender heard it again after draining a three-pointer with 16 seconds left in the first OT. The triple tied it at 88-88. Hello, overtime No. 2. Ten seconds into the second extra session, Bender scored the final two points of his 20-point night. “A lot of guys stepped up for us,” said Bender, whose previous career-high point total was 13 — “Maybe 13,” he said. “It would have been nice,” the Scout

added, “to get a ‘W.’ ” Fans certainly got their money’s worth. They would have gotten that if a ticket had cost $100. “Great high school atmosphere,” Scouts coach Phil LaScala said of a game with Michigan men’s basketball coach John Beilein and other Division I coaches in attendance. “Both teams played hard. “[Bender],” he added, “showed a lot of heart, knocked down some big shots. He has crazy athletic ability, the kind that’s also sneaky.” Scouts junior forward Evan Boudreaux dropped a career-high 43 points on Stevenson (24-1, 11-1) and came down with a game-high 14 boards. He and Brunson had tallied 38 points apiece through three quarters. Boudreaux answered Brunson’s 19-point second quarter with a 17-point third quarter. Brunson settled for a mere 14 points in the fourth frame. Crazy indeed. Junior guard Noah Karras finished with 11 points for the Scouts, and LF senior forward Dane Roberts scored eight, including a pair of treys. Notable: The Scouts also were involved in a marquee game on Feb. 22, when they went head to head — and toe to toe — against state-ranked Marian Catholic in the opening game of the 19th Annual City-Suburban Showdown at Niles West. Again, the fans got their money’s worth. The Scouts (20-6, 8-4) held a 61-60 lead with 1:06 remaining in regulation only to lose the game 67-63. Boudreaux tallied 34 points, but he once again was the game’s second leading scorer. Kentucky-bound point guard Tyler Ulis lit up the gym with 42 points, including 17 in the third quarter. “We had a great February. A lot of exciting games,” said LaScala. “Our March has to be even better.” Lake Forest received the third seed in the Class 4A Lake Zurich Sectional and will face either Barrington or Buffalo Grove in a Libertyville Regional semifinal on March 4. ■

4 to score: Ryan Bender of the Scouts leads a break during his team's wild game with Stevenson on Feb. 21. The senior guard scored a career-high 20 points.

THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

With Kevin Reiterman & Bill McLean

Roaming the Sidelines Football

New Trier: According to a report by SunTimes Media, head coach Dan Starkey will leave New Trier and take the head coaching position at Lockport High School. Starkey, who resides in Lockport, compiled a 22-18 record during his four seasons with the Trevians.

At the Shoot-Around

Girls Basketball New Trier: Led by Jeannie Boehm, Isabella Bosco and Alexa Czyzynski, the Trevians defeated Maine East 55-21 on Feb. 20 to win the Class 4A New Trier Regional. Boehm finished the game with 13 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Bosco tallied 10 points, while Czyzynski added eight points, four rebounds and three steals. New Trier, which was scheduled to play Evanston in the Maine East Sectional championship game on Feb. 27, improved to 26-4 on Feb. 24 by downing Maine West 57-34 in a sectional semifinal. The Trevians broke the game open, when it outscored Maine West 17-4 in the third period. “I didn’t think our defensive intensity was there in the second quarter,” said NT head coach Teri Rodgers. That changed in the opening minutes of the second half, when the Trevians forced three turnovers in the first three minutes. Boehm led the team with 22 points, eight rebounds and four blocks.

 Stepping up: New Trier center Jeannie Boehm, who was named the CSL South Player of the Year, participates in the net-cutting following her team’s regional title win over Maine East.

Loyola Academy: Mary Kate Herion should have looked drained and exceedingly relieved after a Class 4A playoff game. The Loyola Academy senior guard/forward was neither, despite having played the bulk of a 55-43 double-overtime defeat of Glenbrook South for the Niles West Regional championship on Feb. 20. “I kind of like close games,” the 5-foot-9 Herion admitted. The game was tied after the second, third and fourth quarters and after the first four-minute OT session, before the Ramblers (21-9) used a 8-0 run in the second OT to eliminate a resolute squad of Titans (13-15). Herion and classmate Maggie Nick, a 5-9 guard, put on quite a spectacle offensively, accounting for all of LA’s scoring for nearly three quarters. Nick (24 points, 6 boards, 5 steals) poured in 18 of the Ramblers’ first 29 points, and Herion (23 points, 7-for-15 from threepoint land) netted the other 11. A bucket by sophomore forward Liz Satter (8 rebounds) at 1:23 of the third frame broke up the NickHerion Show. Herion set a resounding tone in the second OT with back-to-back treys in the first 1:23. Nick tallied six points in the final 2:11. The Ramblers (21-10) saw their season come to close on Feb. 24 in the semifinal round of the Maine East Sectional, when they dropped a 42-35 decision to Evanston. Herion drilled four three-pointers and finished with 14 points. Nick had eight points and nine rebounds.

Flipside

Gymnastics New Trier: Samantha Stoddart’s goal for her uneven-bars routine was a simple one: “To stick my routine,” the New Trier High School junior said at the state meet at Palatine High School on Feb. 22. That’s certainly easier said than done in a demanding and difficult sport like gymnastics. But the Trevian achieved her aim, landing a seventh-place 9.375.

photography by george pfoertner “The routine felt good,” Stoddart said. “Every second of it felt good.” Stoddart’s previous best result at state was a 20thplace showing her freshman year (9.05, bars). New Trier, making its third straight state appearance, placed seventh (141.9 points).

Honor Roll

Boys Basketball Highland Park: Three juniors — Jordan Krawitz, Luke Norcia and David Sachs — have been named to the CSL North all-conference team. That trio helped the Giants defeat Maine South 54-49 on Feb. 18. Norcia (17 points, 5 assists), Krawitz (12 points, 4 steals, 4 assists) and Sachs (11 points, 4 assists) led the way. On Feb. 21, HP (19-6) defeated Glenbrook North 37-34. Norcia had a team-high 14 points. Loyola: Three Ramblers have been honored. Senior guard Jack Morrissey was named to the All-Catholic League, while senior guards James Clarke and Kevin Kucera made the Catholic North all-conference team. LA’s Tom Livatino was the Lawless Coach of the Year. New Trier: Seniors Jordan Thomas and Ricky Samuelson were named to the CSL South all-conference team. Samuelson tallied 24 points in his team’s 75-55 win over visiting Waukegan on Feb. 21. Thomas had 12 points in the contest. Junior Robbie Abuls had 16 points for the Trevians (18-9).

Girls Basketball Highland Park: Sarah Glazer and Lizzy LoGrande earned CSL North all-conference recognition. New Trier: Sophomore center Jeannie Boehm was selected as the CSL South Player of the Year. Seniors Alexa Czyzynski and Isabella Bosco also earned allconference honors. ■

Tall Order

New Trier hopes for a four-peat at state swim meet

■ by bill mclean

sports@northshoreweekend.com

Who’s that redwood taking on all those tiny Charlie Brown Christmas trees at swimming meets? New Trier High School senior Matt Weiser is his name and football should be his game. He is 6-foot-6, 250 pounds after all. “My dad [Sam] likes to say I’m the tight end who got lost on his way to football practice and ended up on the swim team,” a smiling Weiser said after qualifying for state in two events (200-yard IM, 100 breaststroke) at the Glenbrook North Sectional on Feb. 22. “I’ve heard I’m intimidating to some swimmers at meets.” But he’s also affable and engaging — and fast. Weiser touched third in the 200 IM (1:57.65) and fourth in the 100 breast (59.23) to help NT capture the sectional title with 252 points. Glenbrook South (226) and Loyola Academy (159.5) finished 2-3. “He’s a big son of a gun,” retiring NT coach Mark Onstott said of the four-year varsity swimmer and Olympic Development Program water polo player. “He also swims all four strokes well and filled in well for us in all kinds of ways this season. “Last year he was our No. 3 in the IM and 100 breast. He’d always been close, not quite there. But this year is his.” Next year Weiser plans to swim and play water polo at Division III Occidental (Calif.) College. Training for a spot on the U.S. junior team in late March precludes him

3/01 – 3/02/14

Blond ambition: Jae Park of the Trevians races to a pool record in the 200 IM at the Glenbrook North Sectional. He qualified to state in four events.

photography by joel lerner from playing for the Trevians’ water polo team this spring. “I’m excited about the great opportunity to do both sports in college,” Weiser said. What also gets him going is the opportunity to represent his school as a swimmer at one more big meet. Reigning state champion New Trier would like nothing more than to cap Onstott’s career with another state championship this weekend. The Trevians will be looking for a four-peat.

“The incredible swimming tradition at our school … for me, it’s been a privilege to have been mentored by so many great swimmers since my freshman year,” Weiser said. One such swimmer, Jae Park, is still around. The senior qualified for state in four events at the sectional, topping the 200 IM (pool-record 1:52.4) and 100 breast (poolrecord 57.52) fields and swimming on a pair of victorious relays (200 medley, 400 free). Senior Tommy Jiang and Connor Fotsch

and sophomore Larry Brooks joined Park as medley legs; Fotsch and juniors Murphy McQuet and Tomo Sharpee swam the first three legs of the 400 free relay (3:08.94, a time that ranks fourth among all state qualifiers). NT junior Drew Keenan won the 100 backstroke (52.55) as the event’s third seed. McQuet picked up state berths in the 100 butterfly (2nd, 51.41) and 200 free (5th, 1:44.13) and helped the 200 free relay advance to state (third-place 1:27.6, with Sharpee, Brooks and Fotsch). Trevians sophomore Max Robertson (4:39.59) and freshman teammate Jack Walter (4:43.38) went 2-4 in the 500 free with qualifying efforts. Only six others in the state swam faster than Robertson did in the 500 free last weekend. Jiang made it to state in the 100 back (6th, 53.7), and NT sophomore Willie Kinsella earned his team’s 14th state berth with a sixth-place showing in the 200 free (1:44.46). The state meet starts Feb. 28 at Evanston High School. Notable: Trevians sophomore Charlie Gentzkow qualified for state in four events for athletes with disabilities at the Glenbrook North Sectional. He won the 200 free (2:36.67) and 100 free (1:12.54) events and finished runner-up in the 50 free (30.69) and 100 breast (1:37.74). … An equipment malfunction (runaway goggles at the start) spoiled Fotsch’s attempt to qualify for state in the 100 free. He finished seventh in 48.12, a tad slower than the state cut of 48.01. ■

Loyola Academy coach is keen on young Kearney ■ by bill mclean

sports@northshoreweekend.com With a fourth-place finish in the 200yard freestyle relay at a highly competitive swimming and diving meet, Loyola Academy added 22 points to its team total. But the result also subtracted something precious at the Glenbrook North swimming and diving sectional on Feb. 22. “I lost about a year of my life during that race,” Ramblers coach Mike Hengelmann cracked after sophomore anchor Christopher Kearney and seniors George Finn, Cameron Shewchuck and Michael Zahorik clocked a 1:27.87 — a scant 0.11 faster than the state cut in the event. “That was close … too close,” he added. The 6-foot-5, 200-pound Kearney accepted part of the blame for accelerating his coach’s aging process. “My start was a little too safe,” he admitted. But Kearney finished in a fantastic 46.84 in the 100 free, good for third place and significantly swifter than the state cut of 48.01. The Rambler had entered the sectional with a seed time of 48.52 in the event. “For a 15-year-old, Chris has great maturity,” Hengelmann said. “He works

so hard and he’s humble. It’s like he’s an upperclassman.” Kearney swam on two other state-qualifying relays (200 medley, 400 free), as Loyola placed third (159.5 points) behind Gletnbrook South (226) and reigning state champion New Trier (252). “Three relays — getting that many to state was something I hadn’t even imagined,” a proud and thrilled Hengelmann said. “I was hoping for one relay to make it. “There were a lot of positives today,” he added. “And I couldn’t be happier for our seniors who will get to swim at state for the first time.” Kearney’s older brother, Matthew (a senior), joined Finn, senior Tom Haracz and Christopher Kearney to post a runner-up time of 1:36.73 in the 200 medley relay; Christopher Kearney also anchored the fourth-place 400 free relay (3:12.49) that included Finn, Shewchuck and Haracz. Advantage, Van Antwerp

Switching from diving to swimming proves to be a huge benefit for LFHS senior ■ by kevin reiterman

sports@northshoreweekend.com Freshman year, Michael Van Antwerp had aspirations of being a top-notch diver. By sophomore year, that ambition went, if you will, by the board. Lake Forest High School boys swim coach Cindy Dell, who has an eye for talent, saw something in a young Michael Van Antwerp. “I told him, ‘You know, Michael, I think you’re a better swimmer than diver,’ ” recalled Dell, following her team’s secondplace finish to powerhouse Libertyville 294275.50 at the Lake Forest Sectional on Feb. 22. Talk about expert analysis. Dell’s talent evaluation turned to pure silver, when Van Antwerp, now a senior, trimmed more than 10 seconds off his seed time in the 500-yard freestyle and qualified to this weekend’s state meet at Evanston High School. His silver-winning, second-place time of 4:46.83 was just enough to beat the IHSA cut (4:47.32). “With this being my last varsity race in the Lake Forest pool, I couldn’t ask for anything more,” said Van Antwerp, a JV swimmer last winter. And the grateful swimmer couldn’t credit Dell enough. “She saw my potential,” Van Antwerp said. “She’s been behind me every step of the way.” Van Antwerp wound up losing to Libertyville’s Pat King in a photo finish. King, who never relinquished his lead, was clocked in 4:46.62. “I knew the race would go down to the wire,” said Van Antwerp, noting that King is more of a friend than a foe. The two swimmers train with the Lake Forest Swim Club. “I tried to race my own race,” the LF

King was acutely aware that the amped-up Van Antwerp was charging hard at the end. “I’m not sure if I’ve ever heard a crowd go crazy like that, or get that loud, for a 500

free,” said Dell, noting that photo finishes are rare in the distance event. “King really pushed him, and Michael took the no guts, no glory approach,” the Scouts coach said. “Michael showed a lot of courage, desire and heart in that race. “He knew that he had to drop 10 seconds off his time to make the cut,” Dell added.

“He believed he could do it. He was either going to do it or go down trying.” Getting a late start in the pool worked against him. But he overcame that. “As a sophomore, his best 500 free time was 5:45,” said Dell. “But he committed himself to year-round swimming. He came into this season well prepared. His goal from the first day (of practice this season) was to be a state qualifier in the 500.” Taking an anatomy class was another life-changing event for Van Antwerp. Next year, he’ll attend the University of Iowa and pursue a degree in nursing. The sight of blood? “That doesn’t bother me,” said Van Antwerp. The challenge of facing an uphill climb? That doesn’t bother him, either. Notable: LF’s diving corps definitely came through on Saturday morning. Andrew Streightiff claimed the sectional crown with a 435.75, which was just enough to edge Libertyville’s Pat Birck (434.45) and Mundelein’s Kevin Franz (433.15). LF’s John-Michael Diveris placed fourth (413.35) and has earned an at-large berth … Cole Mitchell was one of the headliners for the Scouts. He qualified to state by taking second and tying a school record (59.23) in the 100 breaststroke. He shares the record with the late Michael Gannon. “Cole has been training like a crazy man,” said Dell … Junior Daniel Smith qualified to state in four events: 100 free (2nd, 47.65), 100 back (2nd, 51.47), 200 medley relay (2nd, 1:36.04) and 400 free relay (2nd, 3:12.26). He teamed with Mitchell, Michael LeMay and Symen Ooms in the medley relay. The other members of the 400 free relay were LeMay, Ooms and Dylan Boyd … Ooms also qualified in the 100 free (4th, 48.0), while LeMay also advanced in the 100 butterfly (3rd, 52.15). ■

HP's Tran, Laedlin qualify to state swim meet ■ by bill mclean

sports@northshoreweekend.com As he stood on a starting block to receive the most significant medal of his swimming career, Allen Tran looked at his sister, Sydney, in the stands, raised his arms and flexed them a la Hercules. The Highland Park High School sophomore then squeezed a broad smile at the Glenbrook North Sectional on Feb. 22. He was exhibiting pure joy, without a hint of arrogance. “No words could describe what I’m feeling now,” a thrilled Tran said after earning his first state berth with a fourth-place 1:00.59 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Hours earlier, after swimming for the Giants’ 200 medley relay, Tran felt devastated. The quartet had missed qualifying for state by 7/100ths of a second. “My day was shut down,” Tran said. Giants senior Ben Laedlein had served as the relay’s lead-off leg and experienced a second dose of heartbreak after touching the wall in sixth place (48.08) in the 100 freestyle. The state cut in the event is 48.01 — another 7/100ths of a second better than Laedlein’s time. But he recovered to qualify easily for state

in the 100 backstroke with a fourth-place time of 52.99. Laedlein placed 34th (54.02) in the event at state last winter. “When I saw what Ben did [at the sectional], I wanted to join him [as a state qualifier],” said Tran, who did so in the next event. “My kick … that was important today. And my teammates pushed me, supported me.” Sydney Tran, a seventh-grader and a competitive swimmer herself, had another reason to be excited at the sectional in Northbrook. The butterflyer’s older brother had promised to get her something special if he advanced to the state meet. “Headphones,” Allen Tran said. “I’m going to buy her headphones.” HP senior Jack Tresley and junior Eddie Kochman swam the third and fourth legs, respectively, of the 200 medley relay. Kochman, Laedlein (anchor), senior Phil Goldberg and sophomore Alex Grigorovich combined to clock a school-record and sixthplace 3:16.83 in the 400 free relay. Goldberg didn’t qualify for state in the 200 IM or 500 free, but he dropped significant time in each event. He bettered his seed time by more than four seconds in the 200 IM (2:05.14, 10th place) and placed fifth in the 500 free (4:48.96) after entering with a

seed time of 4:57.8. Giants senior David Robbins, who just missed a state at-large berth, took sixth in diving (361.7 points). HP coach Tim Sirois also received strong efforts from Kochman in the 50 free (7th, 22.36) and freshman Levy Nathan in the 500 free (7th, 4:54.45). Reigning Central Suburban League

North Meet champion Highland Park took fifth (121 points) at the highly competitive, 13-team meet. Reigning state champion New Trier (252), Glenbrook South (226) and Loyola Academy (159.5) finished 1-2-3. The state meet starts Feb. 28 at Evanston High School. ■

THe North shore weekend 3/01 – 3/02/14

For Jill and Joe,

Northern California makes for a happy anniversary We went to San Francisco and Napa Valley for our 20th wedding anniversary this past October. The whole trip was fantastic. We stayed at the Westin St. Francis San Francisco Hotel on Union Square. It has such old charm — it was built in 1904 — and it’s right by a cable car. The Bourbon Steak restaurant is in the hotel — it was great.

“We golfed at the Presidio, where you can see the Golden Gate Bridge. We loved the cypress trees — they were so pretty.”

Right near the hotel was Café Bellini. We just loved their croissants and coffee. We went there every day — sometimes twice a day. We also went to a restaurant in North Beach called Rose Pistola. It was Italian, which we love, and they had fantastic fish. We golfed at the Presidio, where you can see the Golden Gate Bridge. We loved the cypress trees — they were so pretty. We drove over the Golden Gate to Napa and spent a few nights at the Westin Veresa right in the downtown. They had a lovely pool. In the lobby they had wine tasting every day. They upgraded the room because of our anniversary — it had a balcony — it was so peaceful. We celebrated our anniversary at La Toque for dinner. Each course had a new wine — that was so special. Our favorite thing was breakfast at Auberge du Soleil. You can see all down the valley. We stayed on the balcony a long time and had a lot of coffee. Jill and Joe Muldoon, as told to David Sweet ■
