Yes, Abraham Lincoln suffered a few insults in his day. Those who complain about partisan sniping need to check their history books to discover the present is quite civil compared to the 19th-century world of politics. I learned about these character assassinations during a visit to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield. Though about a four-hour drive from the North Shore, the state capital — which I had never before journeyed to — offers some fascinating information and one example of captivating architecture for Illinois residents. The interior of the capitol building itself (considered the new one, whose construction started in 1868) is stunning. The dome — which rises 74 feet higher than that of the U.S. Capitol — is topped with 9,000 pieces of stained glass. Many ceilings feature gold leaf or elegant drawings. Paintings of Illinois governors grace the walls, with one notable exception: the state will not pay for the imprisoned Rod Blagojevich to be painted, an exercise in fiscal responsibility many wish

Comfort zones Kitchen and bath areas become much more inviting
■ by bill mclean It is now possible for a number of North Shore residents to visit an archipelago without boarding a plane. All they have to do is view a high-end kitchen, where one striking, marble-top island isn’t always enough in what is commonly referred to as the hub of the home. Two islands are necessary for some homeowners, with one serving as a station to prepare a dinner and the other providing an ideal place for a teen to sit and interact with parents when the iPad needs a rest. “The kitchen has evolved to be the most intimate and personal gathering space in the home,” says Doug Durbin, CEO and design director of nuHaus, a Chicago-based company that specializes in designing, manufacturing and installing fine architectural millwork and cabinetry for kitchens. “The modern kitchen is broken down into more specific work zones that function very efficiently for multiple people. “It’s a space,” he adds, “for making the morning coffee, cooking the evening meal, tackling homework, watching television or enjoying a glass of wine.” Television shows are influencing the look of the modern kitchen, notes Studio 41 executive general manager John Mannion. Conventional sinks at a number of homes have morphed into restaurant-grade sinks, thanks in part to the Food Network and reality TV cooking competitions. “Everybody wants to be Rachael Ray or [Chef] Emeril,” Mannion says. “But kitchens have turned into entertainment centers more than anything else. People, it seems, live in them for most of the day.” Bathrooms, like kitchens, are no longer deemed utilitarian spaces at home, says
“The kitchen has evolved to be the most intimate and personal gathering space in the home.” | Doug Durbin Michele Vold, a broker at Coldwell Banker in Deerfield. “These spaces are now being designed to be spa-like,” Vold says. “Beautiful showers and tubs cause you to linger there, and the extra storage being demanded causes the bathroom to function as a dressing room as well. “Buyers,” she adds, “will always favor a home that has upgraded and updated kitchens and baths.” People have dubbed walk-in pantries near kitchens “Costco closets,” because homeowners are buying a year’s worth of paper towels and other household necessities at the warehouse club and storing them not too far from a kitchen’s integrated refrigerator or nooks reserved for the use of technological gadgets. “People love a walk-in pantry,” says Matt Huff, owner and president of Huff Real Estate Group in Winnetka. “It’s the way to go and it’s highly functional. As for the color of the kitchen, it’s white, white, white … classic white — that’s still the look most want in a kitchen.” Grey, nuHaus’ Durbin points out, is a popular shade for kitchens because it’s a nice alternative to white. “It’s a warm tonal color and, if used properly, can be a timeless choice for your kitchen,” Lake Forest kitchen

he says. “We gravitate toward timeless designs and try to avoid what we feel is ‘trendy.’ ” Mary Ann Hart Beardman espouses classic kitchen choices for her clients, though the principal of Bailey & Hart Interiors in Lake Forest is quick to remind, “Ten friends, 10 opinions.” White isn’t just simple and clean. “It’s casual and friendly,” Beardman says. “People want that when they’re in a kitchen. And it’s something that will last a long time. White — it’s still huge in kitchens. What I’m against is a kitchen with 50 different kinds of tiles. “You don’t want to walk into a kitchen,” she adds, “and think you’re in a quarry.” There was a time when you could walk into a kitchen, reach for the knob of a cabinet and open it. There now exists an alternative to executing such a move because of souped-up kitchens. “Cabinets can now be opened with a wave of a hand,” Huff says, referring to cabinets installed with motion sensors. “Crazy, isn’t it? But it’s a nice convenience to have when you’re carrying something and it’s difficult to open the cabinet [conventionally].” Technological advances are prevalent in bathrooms as well, from TVs integrated into mirrors to showers that disseminate aromatherapy and color therapy. Even mini refrigerators — also known as “beverage centers” — have migrated to the master bathroom in homes. “People put bottled water, sodas, sometimes wine in there,” says Winnetka resident Catherine Karabas, a kitchen and bath designer at Spaces and Views in Highland Park and a former hairdresser. “Young moms use the beverage centers to store baby formula. “I’ve noticed clients are going back to classic looks [in kitchens and baths], but they’re also interested in doing a little something out of the ordinary.” A 60-inch professional range in a kitchen isn’t ordinary, especially when the owner of such an appliance doesn’t cook. But it stayed put. “Because it fit the design of the kitchen,” Karabas says. The days and nights of moms and dads ordering their kids to vacate the kitchen because of issues such as limited space are long gone. Kitchens these days — at least the ones without a pair of islands — could easily double as spacious rec rooms. They’re not just for preparing food anymore. “Whether a person cooks or doesn’t cook, the kitchen is one of the most critical spaces in the house,” says Roberta Miller, a broker associate at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group in Lake Forest. “Families spend a good amount of time in there. The kitchen matters, and it’s becoming more and more comfortable of a place to sit, work, talk, use an iPad, go over a to-do list. “And the changes in technology in all parts of a house … they’ve been so dramatic,” she adds. “Remember when it was mind-boggling when homeowners could control a light fixture when they weren’t at home?” Vittoria Logli calls the kitchen a home’s heart. The broker at @ properties in Glenview has noticed buyers don’t seem at all interested in what was once a home’s anchor: the living room, a space that might very well be on its last (chair) legs. “Ten years from now,” Logli says, “people will be interested in having even more comfort in the kitchen. Sofas in the kitchen might not be too far away.” ■

THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
A good run
North Shore thrives with council-manager form of government
Will Jones
photography by joel lerner
■ by bill mclean Decades ago as a student at New Trier High School, Will Jones worked for the Glencoe Park District. He spent time outdoors during summers, dutifully taking orders and serving the folks of his hometown. “I got to see what it meant to work on behalf of a municipality,” Jones recalled. “Working at the local level opened my eyes.” It opened doors, too. Jones has served as Glencoe’s assistant village manager for more than three years. He worked for the city of Highland Park for 15 years prior to that, including stints as its public information officer and assistant finance director. Both municipalities — as well as practically every other city and village along the North Shore — continue to thrive behind a council-manager form of government. Glencoe adopted its council-manager system exactly 100 years ago. Glencoe, Highland Park and more than 200 other local governments in Illinois are recognized as professionally managed jurisdictions by the International City/County Management Association. “It’s the perfect blend,” Highland Park city manager David Knapp said of the system of government in which an elected board or council — and each entity’s mayor or village president — works closely with either an appointed village or city manager. “We’re like CEOs who run governments instead of companies,” said Todd Hileman, Glenview’s village manager since 2004 and only the third to hold the position in the village in the last 55 years. “I enjoy it; no two days are the same.
“From my perspective the most important thing is for my staff to communicate with elected officials so that we can streamline government. Our village has an extremely professional reputation.” Bob Kiely, Lake Forest’s city manger since 1990, noted most city managers in the early years of council-manager governments were engineers. “They got those city manager jobs because they knew how to put in sewer systems,” said Kiely, who gets to serve a city that’s celebrating its 75th year under a council-manager system. “City managers don’t like the spotlight,” he added. “We’re focused on a partnership with our city’s leaders and we’re all apolitical at the local and federal levels. Not being affiliated with a political party leads to greater trust from the people in our communities.” Kiely succeeded John Fischbach, who held the post from 1979-1990. In his 24 years as Lake Forest’s CEO, Kiely has worked with 12 mayors and city councils. “It’s quite a feat, having the same form of government for 75 years,” he said. “It’s why Lake Forest is as successful as it is and why Lake Forest is as special as it is.” Craig Malin, a Chicago native and the city administrator of Davenport, Iowa, called for the city of Chicago to shed its mayoral form of government and adopt a council-manager system in an op-ed piece that ran in the Chicago Tribune last fall. He fears his beloved hometown is wobbling toward the fate of Detroit, which became the largest municipality in U.S. history to enter Chapter 9 bankruptcy. “There is no trained, experienced CEO at the helm, responsible for performance and reporting to the chairman (mayor) and board of directors (City Council),” he wrote. “Chicagoans,” he added, “could run their city the way the majority of American cities are run. They could keep the colorful characters in elected positions, but those politicians could boast of excellent service provided by a professional cadre of managers and employees, rather than an antiquated horde that is really only useful one election day, every four years.” Lake Bluff, Lake Forest, Highland Park, Glencoe, Winnetka, Wilmette, Kenilworth, Northbrook and Glenview, among other North Shore council-manager municipalities, each boasts a Standard & Poor’s credit rating of AAA — the highest rating. But the appraisal isn’t based merely on a town’s financial health. “Other factors go into that rating,” said Knapp, whose career in city management (in three states) started in 1970. “How prudent is the council’s decisions? How competent is the leadership? In my opinion managers should always be looking for ways to enhance services and reduce costs for a city.” Jones’ boss is Glencoe village manager Phil Kiraly, and they make up half of the manager office’s full-time staff. The others are an executive assistant and an IT director. The quartet oversees a wide range of services, from tree trimming and removal to emergency medical needs and building inspections. And, yes, sewer management. “A professional manager and the manager’s staff are in charge of running the day-to-day operations of a village or a city,” Jones said. ■

Middle East teens throw caution to the wind in quest for peace ■ by angelika labno What will bring peace to the Middle East? For ages world leaders have proposed solutions, but one group has launched an unconventional way of trying to generate peace — by playing a game of Ultimate Frisbee. Ultimate Peace is a program based in Israel that aims to create unity among Jewish, Arab and Palestinian teenagers. Five of its participants are assembling at Glencoe’s North Shore Congregation Israel to engage in a youth discussion panel on April 16. It is an opportunity to hear firsthand accounts of life in a divided region and insights gained through the program. This is the second year that the teens are traveling to the United States to share their experiences, spread awareness and play an Ultimate Frisbee tournament, which is held in Atlanta this year. It is the first time that Chicago is on their itinerary, a decision spearheaded by Deerfield resident Randi Glass. “It’s hard to keep a dry eye when you hear them speak,” said Glass, who has volunteered with the Ultimate Peace summer camp since its inception. “People see that these kids can be friends, they love each other and they’re choosing to be together. It makes you feel hopeful.” Ultimate Peace began in the spring of 2009 and evolved into two categories: a residential summer camp and an ongoing program. The summer camp, which is based in Acco, Israel, draws more than 300 kids from 14 communities within Israel and the West Bank. Many of them have never been to an overnight camp, nor have they mixed across religions and cultures. Once camp is over, the kids continue practices led by coaches and coaches-in-training in their communities throughout the year. Why Ultimate Frisbee, of all sports? Founder David Barkan, who won a world championship in the game, points to its rare aspect: there is no referee. Being a self-officiated sport means that the players have to work together to solve disputes such as fouls before the game can move forward.
There is a code of ethics referred to as the “spirit of the game,” and five core values make up the spirit: mutual respect, integrity, friendship, fun and non-violence. Nancy and Michael Glass of Glencoe, who initiated the family’s involvement in Ultimate Peace, are also Ultimate Frisbee Hall of Famers who have been friends with Barkan for 30 years. She explains that the uniting factor of the game is respect — respect for oneself and for the opponent is above and beyond the win. “It becomes this very organic place to start with each other, as you have a common goal,” she said. “It’s on you to do the right thing; no one else is going to make those decisions for you,” she said.” During camp, the character-building game forges understanding and friendship on the field, and the rest of the An Ultimate Frisbee team named Yalla Yellow is made up of Jewish, Palestinian, camp activities reinforce that. “We are very clear that we are here and Arab Israeli teens. to get to know each other and share our cultures; we are not here to talk about during religious holidays or desiring to be in one other’s politics,” said Dani, a coach in training preparing for the wedding ceremonies. Such cross-cultural flirtations, while fifth run of camp. “Those conversations may come in time, normal in America, are thought to be unimaginable by naturally, after relationships have been established.” many Middle Easterners set in their ways. They understand that there are also these beautiful relationships and interacwhile they cannot change the past, they can change them- tions that are based around sharing the richness of their selves and the future. Churches unite to open high-quality shop ■ by abby wickman Changing Closets is a little resale shop inspired by a big dream. Sign of the Dove Church’s Pastor Deborah Stackhouse first imagined the idea in 2001. Twelve years later, Changing Closets opened its doors in North Chicago — just a mile from Sign of the Dove in Waukegan and about nine miles north of partner Christ Church’s Lake Forest campus. “There’s need throughout the community — you just have to look in a 10-mile radius to see need,” said Christ Church member Susan Graves, who worked closely with Stackhouse to open Changing Closets. Graves was a recent Lake Bluff empty nester whe n she and Stackhouse first began strategizing where and how to open the resale shop. “It was a big change — you’re kind of doubting yourself, and it was a big step coming in here,” Graves said. “Who would have thought that I would be working with a minister and know people in this community?” Graves and Stackhouse, along with Sign of the Dove member Jan Arnold (who had experience in the retail and resale world), endeavored to find a location for the shop. “It took us a while to find the space,” Graves said. “It was a process, but we had a vision.” Less than a year later, the shop is staffed by volunteers from members of Christ Church and Sign of the Dove, along with others. The shop’s profits go toward funding scholarships and financial aid for Shelia
Daniels Christian Academy (SDCA) in Waukegan. “The school basically runs on the tuition that the parents pay,” said Stackhouse, a founder and a school board member. “We’re able to keep the classroom sizes smaller and tuition lower because of the income that comes in from outside of the school.” While the shop attracts many customers from the immediate community, resale enthusiasts travel from out of state to peruse the selection at Changing Closets. Currently, it offers brands such as Coach, J. Crew, Toms, Prada, Juicy Couture, Ralph Lauren, and Tory Burch. “That’s really our goal here: to offer good quality to our neighbors at a reasonable price that they can afford,” Stackhouse said. Though the shop is always open to donations, the staff at Changing Closets is choosy. “It’s got to be good — no holes, no buttons missing, no stains,” shop volunteer Margaret Smith said. “We’re always looking for the best condition, and things we don’t end up using in the store we donate to another church.” “We don’t want people to feel like they’re second-hand quality,” Stackhouse said. Along with local charities, unused donations may also be sent to people in need in Eastern Europe, Africa, Mexico and Haiti. The shop offers men’s, women’s, women’s plus, children’s and houseware selections. There are plans to expand the shop to offer furniture in future. Changing Closets’ hours can be found at changingclosetsresale.com ■

Naomi Aisen, 12, created and sold more than 250 cookie kits, raising $1,500 for HIAS Chicago, as part of her Bat Mitzvah project. "I believe your Bat Mitzvah project should be something close to your heart,” says Naomi. “HIAS is close to mine.” More than 30 years ago, HIAS brought her parents and grandparents out of the Soviet Union and resettled them in Chicago. Naomi said she wanted to raise money to help immigrants as others helped her own family through HIAS Chicago.

Marisa McClellan
photography by joel lerner
Author’s new cookbook stresses can-do attitude ■ by katie rose mceneely Marisa McClellan is a cookbook author, blogger and food writer. Reading: I just finished a knitting memoir called “Stitches.” I started knitting this winter. But the real book I’m reading now is Barbara Kingsolver’s “Flight Behavior.” Listening: My sister Raina Rose is a folk singer, so I mostly listen to her music and the music she and her friend produce. I’m listening to her album “Caldura” and her friend Rebecca Roebee’s “Mystery Prize.” Watching: I’m sort of obsessed with a show called “Haven.” It’s a SyFy channel show based on a novella by Stephen King. My husband claims it’s not a very good show, but I’m totally engrossed in it. It’s about a town where everyone is sort of troubled and they have these strange abilities, and they’re trying to figure out the mystery, why things are happening to people. Following: Lately I’ve been getting the bulk of social media addiction satisfied through Instagram. I’m always looking to follow people who are creating beautiful things — this time of year what I’m following are pictures of the sun and weather that is not snow. I’m following signs of spring, more than anything. If someone’s posting about thaws or they’ve gone someplace warm and sunny, that’s what I’m following. Activity: My new book is a super small-batch canning and preserving book; it’s called “Preserving by the Pint.” It’s organized by season and is a good working manual for people who shop at farmer’s
markets or have a small garden — people who don’t have a lot of any one thing, basically. I’m planning a fairly extensive tour. When I’m in the Chicago area, I’m doing a bunch of different events. I’ll be teaching some classes, speaking at a luncheon at the Highwood Bocce Courts, doing a demo at the Winnetka-Northfield Public Library on April 28. I’ll have samples from the book to share and there ill be opportunities for people to ask canning questions — basically I’ll be trying to de-mystify the process of canning and food preservation as much as possible. Eating: I have been eating too much Pirate’s Booty. I have been eating roasted Brussels sprouts and cauliflower puree — I’m really tired of those things. I’m ready for spring food. I’ve also been eating lots of lemon and blood orange curd, as well as the occasional gummy bear. What is your favorite mistake? For me, my best mistake is becoming a Philadelphian — I didn’t mean to. I came here a little over 12 years ago, an experiment before I moved back to the West Coast. It’s been a really good city for me, and it’s been a really good city to me, as well. So that’s my best mistake. I accidently became a Philadelphian. Marisa McClellan will lead canning demonstrations and talk about her new cookbook at a series of events on the North Shore from April 25—28. To register for the April 25 luncheon at the Highwood Bocce Courts, visit http://bit.ly/1h1VZ3B. For more information, email canningforkids@gmail.com. 22 | lifestyle & arts sunday breakfast ■ by david sweet After devoting five days to making money for clients in the world markets, each weekend Steven Hefter and his wife, Janice, go on a double date at Eggsperience Café in Bannockburn. The other diners at the table? Their fathers, who are 85 and 90, respectively. “I really treasure those breakfasts,” says Hefter who, like his dad Harry, orders a large glass of orange juice with a double shot of wheatgrass. “I cherish each moment together, k now i ng these moments will not last forever.” On the menu, one item is called “eggceptional” — wh ich also describes Hefter’s performance as a financial Steven Hefter advisor. For the seventh year in a row, Barron’s tapped the Highland Park resident as one of the Top 100 Financial Advisors in the United States — and for the fifth year straight, he was the top-ranked one in Illinois. Overseeing a typical account of $7 million at Hefter, Leshem, Margolis, a capital management group of Wells Fargo Advisors (where his average client enjoys a net worth of $30 million), Hefter invests with equity managers whose volatility measures are below that of the S&P 500 — even when their past returns may fall short of peers’. “If you have a manager with a beta of 1.2 (higher risk than normal), when the market is down 40 percent, he may be down 50 percent,” explains Rafter, sitting in a confer-
Financial advisor is on the money once again
ence room in his Deerfield office. Early in 2013, Jim Paulsen — chief investment strategist of Wells Capital Management — explained he thought the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield, then around 1.65, would hit 3 before year’s end. Hefter and his team sold all fixed-rate investments and purchased floating-rate bonds, achieving big success as Paulsen’s prediction came true. Hefter started moving money into Europe last summer (about one-third of a typical account is devoted to U.S. stocks), but he’s not as excited about the continent’s prospects today. The Japanese market, which has underperformed the past six months, intrigues him, but since he expects the yen will weaken against the dollar, the only way his team would invest is to hedge, he notes. “It’s fascinating to me to look at all of these global asset classes and figure out where I want to be,” says Hefter, who anticipates a 10 percent market correction within the next year. At 13, with bar mitzvah money in hand, Hefter started checking the stock listings in the newspaper. He bought 10 shares of Sperry Rand at around $13. “That got me interested. I’d check how it did every day in the afternoon Chicago Daily News,” he recalls. As a junior at Stanford University, he decided to audit an off-campus course run by a stockbroker. The man explained why to use illustration by barry blitt charts to time investments; when a company would break through its 50-day moving average, for example, that would be a signal to buy. “That was probably the most beneficial class I took in college,” says Hefter, who even formed a group in his dormitory the following year to chart stocks. While earning a master’s of business administration at Harvard University, he interned at Morgan Stanley in New York, observing everything from bond sales to investment banking. He decided high-net-worth sales was his calling — but Morgan Stanley didn’t hire MBAs for that role. Enter Goldman Sachs, where he learned tough lessons during an intensive training program. When, during one
class, fellow trainee Jim Cramer asked if he could take Friday off to attend his sister’s rehearsal dinner, he was told by the Goldman Sachs superior it was fine — with the addendum, “just don’t come back on Monday.” “He got across the importance of dedication. It’s the first time I had a strict disciplinarian,” says Hefter, who recalled one boss would frequently send him outside to procure a half-sour pickle and angrily mutter after a bite, “It’s not half-sour; it’s three-quarters.” During his 12 years at Goldman, Hefter says the strength of his investing sprung from his relationship with in-house analysts. A company’s chief financial officer would share with analysts hints of what to expect in earnings and more — information that must be disseminated publicly first today — and that would be relayed to the sales force. When he joined Wachovia Securities in 2007 (which was purchased by Wells Fargo the following year), Hefter finally enjoyed access to top money managers around the world (most firms require advisors to use company managers). “When we found out we could have access to better returns for us and for our clients, that’s a huge difference,” the 60-year-old says. “We used to analyze individual companies and stocks. Now we can pick the best managers.” During the 2008-2009 financial crisis (“it looked like the world was coming to an end,” Hefter recalls) he started steering clients into preferred stocks, whose yields often topped 15 percent. “The government adopted a ‘too big to fail’ policy on banks. Buying their preferred shares at 70 percent below par value, our risk-reward was excellent,” says Hefter, who still devotes about 10 percent of a standard portfolio to preferred stocks. Hefter compliments his team of eight, which includes Charles Margolis and Benjamin Leshem. They often take clients out to dinner where the discussion can include kids, politics, life — but never business. Yet satisfying those same clients’ expectations, Hefter says, is his biggest challenge. “When the market was down 5 percent this year, a client said, ‘I can’t take it any more,’ “ recalls Hefter, who counts more than 200 households as clients. “And this was after it was up a lot last year. I said, ‘If we go into safer stuff and the market ends up 20 percent, will you be happy?’ “ With yet another Barron’s plaque to hang, Hefter is proud of what it means for his clients rather than himself. “It conveys our concern for our clients’ welfare,” he says. “It conveys that we’re trustworthy. love & marriage Presence of concierge will make a hash of wedding
I am not too proud to admit that I spend a lot of time on social media. I enjoy Instagram photos of my friends and their kids having fun across the country. I appreciate when local stores post notices of big sales on Facebook and restaurants tweet the nightly specials. And I love a good text message. It’s no surprise, then, that my fingers were flying when a colleague got married last fall. As quickly as she could walk down the aisle, I fired off a photo of the bride and her father to a slew of our coworkers. Via text messages and Facebook posts we agreed she looked stunning, and that her gown was just the style we imagined she would pick. I sent more photos as she kissed the groom, marched back up the aisle on his arm, and mingled with guests at the reception. Our commentary continued long after I’d praised the cupcake buffet. Nevertheless, I was a bit unsettled by the recent news that New York’s W Hotels are offering a Social Media Wedding Concierge Service, for a fee starting at $3,000.
At your direction, the concierge will work during your wedding and reception to post live updates to Twitter, Vine and Instagram. He or she will also encourage wedding guests to use a custom wedding hashtag in their own social media activities. And after the wedding, the concierge will compile a book of social media highlights. (For those unfamiliar with hashtags, they are labels attached to individual posts that allow most anyone online to find photos, video and other commentary related to your wedding. It’s like doing a keyword search at the library or a really precise Google search.) My first reaction was one of disappointment. I firmly believe that a wedding is a moment in time shared among two people and the friends and family members with whom they choose to involve. I was a little turned off by the idea of another staff member prancing around the ceremony, less than discretely. After all, the concierge’s mission is to inspire action by others. But then I considered all the people who decline invitations to attend a wedding: the infirm, new parents, medical students who

don’t have the time off or the money for travel, among others. There are a slew of people who want to attend your wedding but don’t for good reasons, and social media is their opportunity to be a part of the action. Still, a wedding concierge isn’t the way to handle it. If your college roommate is home with her newborn baby and unable to attend your wedding, she wants a picture of you coming down the aisle with your dad in real time — but she wants it delivered with your third roommate’s commentary on the fabulous hairpiece the bride made from the beads in her grandmother’s necklace, and details of how she snuck those red cowboy boots past her mother. That new mom wants to reply with questions about when
the bride’s brother lost all his hair, did the father of the bride cry, and who is that darling flower girl. Those services are most certainly not covered in the social media concierge’s $3,000 fee. Brides, create your own hashtag and have your most charming cousin spread the word, I say, while you mug for as many pictures as time allows. Consider them your gift to those who couldn’t attend your wedding. You’ll call up the hashtag while en route to your honeymoon, for sure, and have more than one good laugh. But leave the concierge out of it. What service do you consider essential at a good wedding? Send me an email at Joanna@northshoreweekend.com. ■

Couple craves creating flavorful treats
Kim and Scott Holstein
■ by katie rose mceneely Kim and Scott Holstein of Wilmette are the creators of Crave Bar. How did you start Crave Bar? Kim: Scott and I had a pretzel company for 17 years. A couple of years ago, he was obsessed with the idea of putting ice cream on a chocolate-caramel pretzel stick as a novelty ice cream bar. One thing led to another, and Ravinia kept asking about it. It was a product that was created specifically for the Ravinia Festival. When we had an offer to buy our company, Scott and I decided to start a whole new company and revolutionize that old, plain ice cream bar with a dark chocolate caramel pretzel stick and using handcrafted ice cream to create a decadent treat. Scott: Don’t forget the sea salt on top of the chocolate! It’s really an exploration of the salty-sweet combinations of chocolate and caramel. It’s a story told through an ice cream bar. Years in the business? Over 18 years. Scott: We started with Kim and Scott’s Gourmet Pretzels. You can still buy the product at Jewel and Whole Foods around the country — we stuffed soft pretzels. What made you decide to get into the food business? Kim: It was just a wild idea. Scott had a theater background, and I worked in advertising. But his family brought the first Ben & Jerry’s to Chicago. In the early ‘90s, I read an article about pretzels, putting flavors together. I couldn’t get it out of my mind. We decided to start working on it. We really sought out a lot of people who were teachers and experts, that’s how we go into it — more as eaters, passionate foodies, not as people who have food industry experience. Plans for development? Kim: Right now we have three flavors — original, malted milk, and one of our seasonal flavors is a cappuccino dark chocolate. One of our passions is
photography by joel lerner that custom flavor. We’re already working on new flavors. Do you cook? We love to cook. We’d love to do it more — we have three kids, so sometimes it’s crazy. We’re always making breakfast. On the weekends we can have a fun lunch. Forever we’ll be bakers, making something with chocolate. Last night I was exploring with homemade Reese’s cups. Scott: We’ve got, like, 30 pounds of chocolate in our kitchen — we’re picking chocolate for our next product. What do you like to eat at home? Kim: I would say that we love breakfast — Scott is famous for his crepes. I love to bake, cookies, cakes, all that kind of stuff. Scott: Our newest piece of equipment is a dehydrator. We constantly make kale chips. We’ll take kale and put in tamari, olive oil, chili peppers, red peppers, any type of a hearty seasoning mixture, and add sea salt and lay it in the dehydrator for about four hours — you get these delicious kale chips. Funniest or most memorable kitchen incident? We live in our kitchen. A lot goes on! It’s our favorite room in the house. We have all our meetings in the kitchen — in the food business, that’s where you meet. We also have been involved in starting a new company, foodiespoon.com Our former banker, when we were in the pretzel business, was involved with a company selling mini appetizer. The project we thought stood out was these edible spoons. They’re pretzel spoons; it’s really whimsical, fun, unique products — Oreo spoons, Oreo tacos, sweet and savory spoons. Really fun. The creation of the whole branding happened in our own kitchen. We tend to be eating and cooking while we’re having meetings — it’s just part of our life. Crave Bar is available at Foodstuffs, Veers, Nicks Neighborhood Bar & Grill, The Noodle, Rock House and, in the summer, Ravinia Festival. For more information, visit thecravebar.com. ■

The paddle hut of Skokie Country Club was bursting with enthusiastic supporters late in March during the third annual Paddle Palooza, a fundraiser hosted by the North Shore Board for the Northwestern Settlement. As the more than 125 guests made their way in friendly competition, The Katie Todd Band and Who’s Your Daddy kept guests moving to the beat. Beam Global donated two mixologists from Dublin to stir up whiskey concoctions during a tasting event, and Avex handed out Autospout bottles in assorted colors. Ace: Loyola Academy’s
Tommy bordignon bill mclean photography by joel lerner
A
s a pitcher, Tommy Bordignon is a toddler. But the Loyola Academy senior right-hander is pitching like a grown man these days, unleashing fastballs and other highly effective pitches past startled teens. “The easiest 87-89 [mph] you’ll ever see,” Ramblers baseball coach Nick Bridich says. “Tommy’s delivery is unbelievably fluid; the ball explodes out of his hand.” Now a co-ace with classmate and Villanova Universitybound righty Andrew Owen, Bordignon was primarily a productive hitter and smooth-fielding infielder before entering Loyola as a freshman from Glenview in 2010. He pitched here and there before his junior season, when arm trouble kept him off the mound and entrenched at shortstop for his first full season on varsity. The 6-foot, 180-pounder now plays second base when he’s not on the mound for the Ramblers, who improved to 3-4 with their 3-0 defeat of host Hersey on April 5. “Tommy hasn’t pitched a whole lot and he’s figuring things out mentally, trying to establish himself,” Bridich adds. “The physical tools he has, they’re exciting. There’s no question he’s there physically as a pitcher.
“I would not be surprised if he ends up throwing 91-93 [mph] next spring.” Bordignon, ranked 40th in the Class of 2014 by Prep Baseball Report (PBR), will be in a Northwestern University uniform then, as an infielder/pitcher for the Wildcats. “Being vocal and knowing guys behind you will make the plays,” he says of two of the keys to performing as an ace. “Also important is consistently getting ahead of batters.” Bordignon doesn’t have a bulldog mentality. It’s more akin to a pack of frothing bulldogs. “He’s as competitive of a kid as there is,” Bridich says. Adds Owen: “A hard-nosed kid with velocity.” Bordignon’s bat speed came in handy against Hersey’s Huskies on April 5, as he went 3-for-4 and scored two of Loyola’s three runs in the shutout in Arlington Heights. The Ramblers’ polished infield made three double plays behind sophomore starter Tom Giella (2-0), who threw a complete game and showed signs of ace material. Bordignon caught scouts’ attention at a showcase in mid-June last spring, showing advanced arm strength as
an infielder. He threw “… with carry, 86 mph across the diamond,” PBR noted on its website after the Northwest Suburban Baseball Tournament Showcase at St. Charles North. “Exchange was quick and clean, showed solid defensive actions.” Bordignon also displayed an economy of emotion at the plate, beginning with his balanced stance. “Short stride, smooth load,” PBR added. “Bat path was short to the baseball with occasional lift, mostly line drive approach, 81 mph exit velocity from the tee.” Bordignon, (0-1) in the early going this spring, admits most of his life revolves around baseball, but he finds time to get into CYO basketball. Really get into CYO basketball. His competitiveness means he treats each game as if it were Game 7 of an NBA playoff series. But don’t think Bordignon, an Our Lady of Perpetual Hope alumnus, is a super serious, I-love-to-win-nomatter-the-competition guy every waking moment. “There’s a fun side to him, and he can be goofy,” Owen says.

Ace: Highland Park’s
Liam Carter by kevin reiterman photography by joel lerner
I
t didn’t take Liam Carter long to find his rhythm. As he sat down for an interview last month, the Highland Park High School senior quickly stepped into a comfort zone. He’s at ease, when it comes to talking baseball, and pitching in particular. His delivery — like his pitching — is free and easy. He can hit the corners. He can paint the black. Those standing in a batter’s box against him may not find him quite so accommodating. Facing Carter is uncomfortable. It’s an unenviable task. At 6-foot-7, 185 pounds, he’s a can’t-miss prospect who’s hard to miss on a hill or in a hallway. And when he takes the mound, he’s considerably bigger — and more menacing. His ceiling? It’s high. Sistine-Chapel high. He brings the heat. He brings the terror. He brings the repertoire. “He can throw a lot at you,” says his club coach, Top Tier’s Todd Fine. “He should be dominant this spring.” This lanky right-hander, who already is signed up to play baseball collegiately at the University of Missouri, has ace written all over him. He won’t be maxing out any time soon. This Carter has more pitches than that other Carter has little pills. He’s got a five-pitch (maybe more) collection: two-seam fastball, fourseam fastball, curve, slider and change-up. He can get his fastball to hum. It sits in the mid-80s. And it’s got plenty of tail. “I’m not cursed with a straight fastball,” says Carter, a straight shooter. His breaking pitches are nasty. “His curve ball plays well,” Fine says. “It’s really good.” For Carter, who entered the spring ranked No. 28 in the class of 2014 by Prep Baseball Report, there’s nothing quite like tossing a redstitched ball over a white slab from a distance of 60 feet, 6 inches. “Pitching,” he says, “is an art form. You’re trying to locate a ball to a certain spot using movement and deception. “Pitching,” he adds, “never gets old for me. I now understand why Major League pitchers say that. There’s always something to work on, improve on.” There’s always something to re-manufacture — especially for this longtime Lego enthusiast and Robotics student who plans to study mechanical engineering at Mizzou. Following last year’s solid season with the Giants, Carter — with the camera help of his dad (Gordon), a chemical engineer — did something fairly bold. He went back to square one. “My dad put together a compilation of my highlights from my high school season last year,” Carter says. “And while I was watching video of myself, I thought, ‘I don’t look right.’ ”
“I feel like I’ve done well in high-pressure situations. The higher the stakes the more I like it.” Liam Carter
“So,” he adds, “I changed my entire delivery. I had mechanical flaws. I was pitching right over the top. Cricket style. And I was too herky-jerky. So I worked hard on changing my arm path to smooth out my delivery. Now, I have a more normal arm slot. I’m throwing more three-quarters.” With better mechanics, Carter went from throwing 82-84 to 86-88. Fine saw a different Carter last summer. The hurler, who recorded a 6.6 60 time at a showcase in St. Charles last summer and who can dunk a basketball windmill style, got promoted to the 17U Americans — Top Tier’s A team — for the Midwest Championships in Ohio. And in a game, which started at midnight due to a long rain delay, Carter remained extremely focused. In fact, he was lights out. He gave up one run in five innings. “He was awesome,” Fine says. “He showed a lot of character. “He’s pitched a lot on the big stage,” adds the club coach. “He’s been in a lot of exposure games. And he’s come through.” “I feel like I’ve done well in high-pressure situations,” Carter says. “The higher the stakes the more I like it.” There’s no stage fright with Carter. He knows how to perform. Musically, he’s a virtual virtuoso. In addition to the piano and guitar, he plays the French horn for one of HP’s top bands. “It’s pretty hard core,” he says. Sort of like being a staff ace.

Ace: New Trier’s

F
or Drew Fischer, the mound used to be a place to visit, not a residence. He was into changing signs, not speeds. “Freshman year,” he says, “I was a switch-hitting catcher.” But one summer day changed all that. While visiting his cousins’ ranch in Wyoming, Fischer didn’t have a care in the world — until he rolled over the ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) he was driving. The wreck beat him up pretty good. He sustained multiple breaks and a dislocated left elbow. The scar remains very visible. Swinging a bat was next to impossible, as was enduring the demands of a catcher. Time to put away the tools of ignorance. Time for something different. “In a twisted sort of way, the accident was one of the best things that ever happened to me,” says Fischer. He didn’t plan on being a high school pitcher. But now, he knows: “I have so much more potential — as a pitcher.” The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Fischer became a known commodity last year. As the No. 2 starter for the Trevians, he won a team-high six games (6-2) and put together a flashy ERA (2.63) and an even flashier WHIP (1.37). The right-hander, who was named to the all-league team, allowed only 34 hits in 45 innings with 54 punch-outs. Satisfactory numbers for some. Unsatisfactory to Fischer. Drew Fischer 2013 vs. Drew Fischer 2014.
Day and night. “I’m a totally different pitcher this year,” says Fischer, who will take his arm and his bigger and stronger “body by Fischer” to Amherst College next year. Last spring, he was one of the aces up coach Mike Napolean’s sleeve. This spring, he’s an ace … with ace stuff. “Last year, I was a two-trick pony,” says Fischer. “Throw the fastball on the corner and throw the curve down the middle.” He sought out local pitching experts in the offseason and made some fixes. Basically, he no longer tilts his head on the mound, while the upper half of his body is now in concert with the lower half. “He’s got better balance,” says Napolean. “And it’s giving him better velocity and endurance.” Thus, his delivery is more efficient. “It’s going to cut down on the wear and tear of my arm,” says Fischer. Hitters, meanwhile, will find him armed and … terribly good. When he committed to Amherst, he was touching 83-85 on the radar gun. Since then, he’s moved those numbers up to 90-92. His pitch menu includes an array of fastballs — twoseam, four-seam and cut — to go along with a “get me over [plate], in the dirt” curve and a “pitchfork change-up.” Pitchfork? “That’s what I’m calling it,” says Fischer.
On March 31, Napolean and his staff took their Ferrari — Fischer — for a test drive in a spring-trip game in Jasper, Ind. In four innings of work in a 5-4 victory, he recorded 12 outs — 11 on strikes. His fielders could have sued him for boredom. “It’s pretty easy to play defense behind that,” says Napolean. “He’s like a machine out there,” says NT catcher Logan Wible. “He pumps strikes. He keeps working it. He’s a very driven kid.” Fischer admitted that he was pretty “pumped” for his senior season. And you can forgive him for acting like an anxious Little Leaguer. “I arrived 20 minutes early to the first practice,” he says. “Just sat in my car waiting. “I was so ready.” And, the kid who speaks Chinese — he’s currently a student teacher at the school (grading papers, giving quizzes and handing out homework), who plans to minor in the language in college— is not caught up with the staff ace label. He can’t be. New Trier’s pitching staff this spring is just too loaded for that. The other senior starters include highly touted righty David Richman and lefty Brian Gerner. The ace in waiting is sophomore left-hander Ben Brecht. “It’s a competition here,” says Fischer. “I feel like we have three legitimate aces. All of us want that workhorse role.”

Ace: Loyola Academy’s
Andrew owen by bill mclean photography by joel lerner
A
ndrew Owen’s signature move off the baseball diamond is a quick head nod north, followed by two words: “What’s up?” The Loyola Academy senior right-hander likes to greet people in the hallways at school that way, including classmate and co-ace Tommy Bordignon. “He usually says it with a smile,” Northwestern University-bound Bordignon says. “He always has that going, that smile.” Bordignon pauses before elaborating. “It’s more of a smirk,” he adds. What’s up? Owen’s velocity, that’s what. The 5-foot-11, 185-pounder’s fastball travels in the 88-91 mph range, one of the reasons Prep Baseball Report ranks him No. 43 in the Class of 2014. “He’s a hard-throwing kid with talent,” Ramblers second-year baseball coach Nick Bridich says. “He’s more of a thrower than a pitcher, but his breaking ball is more consistent now and he’s doing what upper-echelon pitchers do. “Andrew,” he adds, “is getting out of innings more quickly than he did last year. I like how his pitch count isn’t so high after three or four innings.” For as long as Bordignon can remember, the Villanova University-bound Owen and power pitcher are one and the same.
“Great arm,” Bordignon says. “He has always been the guy with great velocity. Whenever you heard ‘Andrew Owen’ you thought of a pitcher who throws gas.” Owen, 3-4 for LA’s 16-18 squad last spring, was 0-1 through seven games this spring. The thought of serving the Ramblers as one of their top pitchers this season drove him in the fall and winter months. “It all starts in the offseason,” says Owen, who lives in the Ravenswood neighborhood of Chicago. “The more work you do in the offseason, the more likely you’ll give the guys on your team confidence. So much of it [battling as an ace] has to do with trust … trusting the guys behind you, trusting that they’ll make the plays for you. “I have that when I pitch.” Loyola’s infield defense sparAndrew Owen kled in a 3-0 defeat of host Hersey on April 5, prompting Ramblers sophomore starting pitcher Tom Giella to excitedly clap his hand and glove on several occasions. Giella tossed a complete game to improve to 2-0 for a 3-4 club.
“With the kind of defense we have, pitching more to contact is what we’re asking Andrew to do,” Bridich says. “And we’re seeing that from him. In addition to throwing his breaking ball more consistently, he’s throwing it earlier in the count.” Neither Owen nor Bordignon get caught up in being the clear-cut No. 1 on the Ramblers’ staff. Each is happy for the other when the other is on the bump, pumping strikes and retiring bat wielders, and both won’t feel the heat this spring to be THE guy in charge of halting a losing streak — not with capable arms in Giella and junior lefty Jack Yalowitz behind the pair in LA’s deep rotation. Like Bordignon, Owen is an avid CYO basketball player. He paced his latest team at Holy Cross in scoring. All Owen cares about these days is netting significant wins for his baseball team. Fanning dangerous No. 3 hitters is on his mind rather than frustrating dangerous three-point shooters. He appears poised for a fine final season of baseball for LA. The young man who likes to chirp, “What’s up?” will then be able to reply, “My ERA,” when anybody asks him, “What’s down?”
“The more work you do in the offseason, the more likely you’ll give the guys on your team conficence”

Ace: Lake Forest’s
JR Reimer
by bill mclean photography by joel lerner
L
ake Forest High School’s ace wanted to escape the deck of baseball altogether when he was 8 and a Little League rookie. JR Reimer, now a 6-foot-2, 183-pound senior right hander, woke up on the morning of his very first practice with a feeling of dread. “My mom [Deborahanne] had to drag me to practice,” Reimer recalls. “I was shy and I didn’t know a lot of kids then. It took a season, but I fell in love with the sport. “I never looked back.” Batters have to look at the Northwestern Universitybound Reimer this spring and deal with the challenge of a 77-mph changeup — after whiffing at an 87-mph fastball. “It has great down movement, that changeup of his,” Scouts coach Ray Del Fava says. “It’s very deceptive because he doesn’t change his delivery or his release point. It’ll save his arm, too, for the games he plays in the field.” Reimer also fires strikes as a shortstop, his primary position last spring when he batted .330 — second among teammates — and served as the staff’s No. 2 hurler. Northwestern’s coaching staff intends to let him vie for time on the mound and at a middle-infield position next year. For some, the burden of being an ace is a heavy one, a responsibility that requires confidence and resiliency. Reimer, a co-captain, welcomes it each time he climbs a mound in a start. “I’m aware that teammates are looking at me and my demeanor when I pitch,” says Reimer, who confounds base runners with an effective pick-off move. “If someone gets a hit off me or something else doesn’t go my way out there, I won’t dwell on it and I won’t show I’m down on myself. It’s important to think, ‘Move on, get the next batter out.’ ” Last spring Reimer went 2-4 with a 2.48 ERA in seven appearances (six starts) behind ace and 2013 LFHS graduate Luke Turelli (5-2, 2.45 ERA). He tossed two complete games and solved most of the batters he faced in North Suburban Conference games (1.00 ERA). An all-NSC pick (honorable mention) last spring, Reimer allowed three earned runs and fanned four in five innings in the Scouts’ 5-3 loss to Saegertown (Pa.) High School in the season opener in South Carolina March 31. It marked the first time junior George Karkazis caught Reimer’s deliveries in a spring game, after catching Reimer’s starts in summer league games. “He’s the full package and in control when he’s on the mound,” says Karkazis says. “I’m just there for moral support. JR located his fastball really well [in the opener]. That curve he throws, it drops off the table; it’s a good out pitch. His cutter is his go-to. “When JR is on the mound,” he adds, “everybody knows we have a good chance to win.” That knowledge usually results in a collective swagger from an ace’s teammates, either when they’re heading to their positions on defense or walking to the plate. Mindsets are generally positive when a team’s best hurler is throwing his stuff. Batters typically don’t press when their ace is sitting in the dugout between innings because they know a run-scoring rather than a three-run homer might be all that’s necessary to ensure a victory. “When JR gets that look in his eye on the mound, he’s feeling it and dealing it,” Karkazis says. “At that point we’re all thinking, ‘We’re supposed to win.’ He’s fun to watch, fun catch. “I’m glad he’s on my side.” Reimer’s father’s side of the family boasts a pair of former major leaguers in grandpa Richard Reimer (Steve Reimer’s father) and great uncle Robert Reimer. Richard was a shortstop for the New York Giants, and Robert pitched for the Brooklyn Dodgers. For now, JR Reimer, with his shy days long gone, loves pitching and playing shortstop for the Scouts. He also enjoys having a bat in his hands. “JR wants to be on the mound in the seventh [last] inning as much as he wants to be at that plate in the seventh when the game is on the line,” Del Fava says.

Ace: New Trier’s
david richman by kevin reiterman photography by joel lerner
D
avid Richman’s face lights up, when he talks about The Walk. He was the closer for New Trier’s baseball team last spring. And during home games at Duke Childs Field, he would hang out in the bullpen and basically beg for a close game. After getting The Nod from the dugout, Richman would frantically warm up, break a sweat and start thinking mind over batter. And then, the hard-throwing right-hander wound wait … for the music to played on the public address system. His song: “Gasolina.” A reggaeton tune performed by Daddy Yankee. “When I heard that song coming through the speakers,” he says, “it would put me in a different world. There’s nothing like that walk to the mound (in a save situation), when coach says, ‘You’re in.’ You get to the mound, you lower your hat and go to work. I turn into a different person when I’m out there.” “I’m going to miss that feeling this year,” he adds. Last spring, the solidly built Richman (6-foot, 215 pounds) with the tough-guy persona, came up aces in the bullpen. He went 4 for 4 in save situations to go along with a 3-0 record and a 1.29 ERA. He fanned 23 and walked only two in 16-plus innings. “He was great for us in pressure situations last year,” says Trevians head coach Mike Napolean, noting that his teammates named him MVP — Most Valuable Pitcher — last spring. “He’s very competitive.
“He’s got that bulldog mentality.” And he’s got versatility. Richman, who is set to pitch at the University of Pittsburgh next year, is taking on a new role this spring. The senior has joined right-hander Drew Fischer and left-handers Brian Gerner and Ben Brecht in the starting rotation. “Being in the starting rotation is awesome. It’s an honor, especially at New Trier,” says Richman. “There’s a lot of pitching depth here. There’s always another guy ready and waiting, if you don’t do well. And that’s why I think we will be in it for the long run (this spring).” Richman’s makeup is ace material, as is his stuff. “He throws strikes, and he’s got good composure,” says Napolean. “You mix all that together, and he’s very effective.” “What I like about him is that he trusts all his pitches,” adds senior catcher Logan Wible. “He goes out there really confident. He doesn’t care if he’s facing a .500 hitter.” Richman made the transition from reliever to starter last summer, while pitching for the Wilmette Waves. He quickly learned that starting is a marathon, not a mad dash. “In my first game, I was gassed by the third inning,” recalls Richman. In October, he participated in a Perfect Game World Championship at the Roger Dean Complex in Jupiter, Fla. He went up against some of the nation’s best, and it was eye opening and ego challenging.
“The talent there was unbelievable. Future top draft picks. There’s four fields at the complex, and at every field there was a pitcher pumping 90 miles per hour,” Richman says. And the hitters? Murderers-row good. “I was used to blowing away hitters with my fastball,” says Richman. “I remember my first pitch being laced for a double.” He got the message. “I wound up throwing a ton of change-ups,” he adds. “That change-up,” says Wible, “is getting better. He’s come a long way with it. It’s got real good movement.” Richman also took part in a camp at Northern Illinois last fall. It was there that his fastball touched 89. “It’s my best pitch,” says Richman. He gained velocity through long toss and crossover cords. And he’s also benefited from solid instruction from NT pitching coach Scott Klipowicz and Slammers pitching coach Bryan Ward. Klipowicz’s pitching philosophy is pretty standard. “He’s big on throwing strikes,” Richman says. Back in the day, Richman thought very little of peering in for signs and working out of a stretch. “I used to be a third baseman. Until sophomore year. And I swung a pretty good stick,” says Richman, sounding like a true pitcher. “I hit some bombs. “In fact, it’s a little weird not batting and fielding. It’s what I did my whole life,” he adds. “But it’s alright. I’m just a pitcher now. I’ve embraced it.”

“The company’s commitment to its customers and to the environment did not waver throughout the early, lean years.” The episode was characterized in the media as the Syringe Tide. State and local officials reluctantly closed the beaches while the source of the waste was identified. The materials were eventually traced to the Fresh Kills Landfill on Staten Island. The event cost the shore communities billions of dollars in lost tourist revenues. The next year, the U.S. Congress passed
the Medical Waste Tracking Act of 1988. While this placed stringent regulations on the disposal of such infectious wastes, there were no commercially viable solutions to meet those requirements. In 1989 a small group of North Shore and Chicago investors decided to start a company that would fulfill these market needs. In particular, the group wanted to offer a service to hospitals, blood banks, and other medicalwaste sources to help them safely handle and then dispose of their medical waste. They called the new company Stericycle. The company would not only treat the waste and render it noninfectious without air pollution, it would also provide safe and reliable collection methods. The new company would even help train its clients how to safely handle biohazards and contaminated instruments. A crucial development in those early years was the invention of a thermal method for disposing of infectious waste without generating pollution, as is the case with other incineration methods. The enterprise — whose headquarters are in Lake Forest — was not an immediate
success, but the investors were tenacious. In 1991 the company had sales of $1.9 million from a dozen clients and was still operating below breakeven. That year the board hired Mark Miller as CEO. Miller had a successful career as an executive at Abbott Labs, and he knew that the market requirements for the new company’s services were vast. All during the first half of the 1990s the company struggled with cash flow and the need to invest in new facilities. The investors provided unfailing support, and Miller pressed on by installing waste treat facilities in Washington, Wisconsin, Rhode Island, and California, providing a footprint that would serve customers across the country. The company’s commitment to its customers and to the environment did not waver throughout the early, lean years. Meanwhile, Stericycle continued to invest in new technologies and in facilities even as the customer community expanded. Outpatient facilities, urgent care centers, drug treatment centers, medical laboratories, dentist offices, and even ambulance companies and police departments were looking for responsible ways to dispose of bio hazardous waste and infectious materials. By the end of 1996, company sales had reached $25 million annually, and the company was listed on NASDAQ. This infusion of capital turbocharged the company’s strategy. That same year, Stericycle purchased Waste Management’s medical-waste -treatment business. In 1998 alone the company acquired 12 other waste-treatment companies. I n 19 9 9 Ster icycle pu rchased
Browning-Ferris Industries’ medical-waste business. BFI was the largest medicalwaste-treatment company in North America. The BFI acquisition added 120 locations to Stericycle’s network, while reinforcing its market position in Canada and Puerto Rico. One of the advantages of an acquisition strategy goes beyond market share and facilities purchases. An acquisition is a chance to bring compelling new talent into an organization. Charles Alutto was part of such a management team that the company acquired in 1997. Alutto quickly distinguished himself both with his leadership skills and business acumen. He ran the company’s European business during a period of rapid expansion. In 2011 he was named president of Stericycle USA. In January 2013, he added the CEO title as well. At age 48, Alutto runs one of the largest and most successful public companies on the North Shore. Stericycle’s market capitalization passed $10 billion early this year with revenues of $2 billion. Visiting the company’s headquarters in the northwest corner of Lake Forest, a visitor is struck by the modest facilities. In the parking lot traffic noises compete with the gentle fragrance of popcorn from a nearby confectionary plant. Stericycle is not a company that regales itself in fancy offices. It is a company that takes its social responsibilities and its investment stewardship seriously, to help provide safe treatment of medical wastes and to educate its customers about how to accomplish that goal. Where there’s a Gil, there’s a game
Super fan has attended more than 1,500 — and counting — New Trier games ■ by bill mclean
sports@northshoreweekend.com The man who is as much of a fixture at New Trier football games as goalposts are on football fields likes to tell the story of a running back who closed his eyes and ran for a touchdown after somehow squirting through three significantly bigger players. “Terrified,” was the word John “Gil” Gilbert, 72, used to describe the slippery left halfback. The Glenview resident added that practically everybody at the stadium that rainy day thought the stout gridders had pounded the 5-foot-11 ball carrier at the line of scrimmage on a sloshy, muddy field. But Gilbert insisted they had not, because the elusive running back was … Gilbert, then a senior four-sport athlete at Oskaloosa High School in Iowa. He played football, basketball and baseball and competed for the track and field team in the 1950s. (Baseball was a summer sport at the time.) A summer for Gilbert nowadays is an unwelcome three-month break from the New Trier football, basketball and baseball games he looks forward to attending each academic year. The super fan — “I’m New Trier’s No. 1 fan and I own at least 50 New Trier t-shirts,” Gilbert said — started attending all of NT’s football games in the mid-1980s and figured the Trevians’ 10th game last fall (a playoff loss at Glenbard North) was his 260th. He has watched nearly 650 boys basketball games and more than 600 baseball games, including back-to-back seasons in which he did not miss a first pitch. “I love the level of competition,” said Gilbert, whose children, Chrissie (now 41 and living in England) and James (38, Culver City, Calif.), attended New Trier. “The caliber of athletes at New Trier is so different, so much higher than it was when I was in high school. I don’t think I would have been able to make a New Trier basketball team. The football and track teams, yes. “As for baseball, I had a fastball, but I was wild. Batters were terrified of me. Maybe somebody in the New Trier baseball program would have been able to straighten me out.” The engaging Gilbert is the consummate storyteller, and one of his favorite stories doesn’t involve a sport — unless you think the annual Running of the Bulls in Pamplona is one. He met his future wife, Wyn, in Spain after witnessing the odd event in which participants attempt to outrun ornery, half-ton animals along narrow streets. “Wyn, as opposed to lose,” cracked Gilbert, who has been married for 44 years. “Right after I saw her, I said, ‘There’s the woman I’m going to marry.’ I’m not kidding; people heard me say that. My wife is the only person I’ve known that everybody instantly likes when they meet her.” Gilbert also sat with a former Bull — a man named Michael Jordan, whose
Bleacher fixture: John “Gil” Gilbert watches a New Trier-Maine South basketball game in late January. photography by joel lerner
sons, Marcus and Jeffrey, played hoops for Loyola Academy in the 1990s. Gilbert lived in Wilmette for 27 years before moving to Glenview 11 years ago. He still likes to watch LA’s home contests in Wilmette when his Trevians are idle. “I was sitting next to [Jordan] at a Loyola game and he noticed the 3”-by-5” index card I was holding,” Gilbert recalled. “I live by
those cards. I keep stats on those cards. Michael couldn’t believe I was doing that. He gave me a look, a ‘What are you doing?’ look. I remember asking him if he wanted to know how many rebounds one of his sons had at the time, because I had that number on my index card.” A former hockey house league director and youth soccer coach in Wilmette, Gilbert
has been asked to give pep talks to New Trier teams and he likes to occasionally “pump up” varsity basketball players in bleachers during sophomore games. For years his trusted companion at New Trier baseball games was an air horn, an instrument he blared after NT home runs. Gilbert even squeezed the horn to praise a spectacular play made by an opposing team’s infielder. The resourceful fan also discovered the air horn could come in quite handy in between sporting events. “About 15 years ago my car’s horn stopped working,” Gilbert said with a chuckle. “I found out it would have cost about $200 to fix it. I didn’t want to pay that kind of money, so I made sure my air horn was with me when I was driving in case I need to honk at somebody. “I’d roll down my window and blast away.” Gilbert once had to blow a whistle as a referee in a college men’s basketball game. He was a junior at the University of WisconsinRiver Falls when the referees for a scheduled game at UW-River Falls failed to show up because of a snowstorm. An intramural basketball ref, Gilbert got the nod to officiate the contest. “I got the coaches together before the game and told them, in order for me to take control of the game, I would have to call two early fouls, one on each team,” said Gilbert, who worked in business products sales before serving as a director of records and systems at a nuclear power plant design firm in Chicago. “The first foul I called was a legitimate foul on River Falls’ opponent. The one I called on River Falls … the player couldn’t believe it and got really angry, started swearing at me. So I called a technical on him.” UW-River Falls ended up winning the game. “But not because of me,” Gilbert said. One of Gilbert’s favorite all-time NT athletes is Matt Lottich, a three-sport star (football, basketball and baseball) who played basketball at Stanford, played professional basketball for eight years in Japan and joined the Valparaiso men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach last summer. “Matt was gifted and tremendously coordinated,” Gilbert said of the father of three, with wife Kylan. “He was also fiercely competitive.” Mark McCaffrey is the father of Matt McCaffrey, a senior all-state scholar and three-sport athlete (football, basketball and baseball) at New Trier. Mark and his in-laws each struck up a friendship with Gilbert three years ago at a New Trier home football game. “He was always at games, in the same spot near the press box,” Mark McCaffrey said. “He’s good company and he’s very positive. Gil is also a big defender of the coaches; I like that. It’s easy to be hard on coaches. “I’ll probably go to some New Trier football games in the fall, and it’ll certainly be nice knowing Gil will be there, too.” ■

Circling the Bases
Baseball Glenbrook South: Steve Stanicek, who played professional baseball for the Milwaukee Brewers (1987) and Philadelphia Phillies (1987), has started his first season as head baseball coach at GBS. He has replaced Bob Rosinski, who resigned in January. Stanicek has been a highly successful high school coach. In 11 seasons at Homewood-Flossmoor and Lockport, he put together a 281-92 record with nine conference titles and seven regional titles. Prior to playing professionally, Stanicek was a standout at the University of Nebraska. He earned first team AllAmerica honors in 1982. Lake Forest High School grad Travis Myers is serving as GBS’s pitching coach. He was a three-sport athlete for the Scouts who went on to pitch at Illinois Wesleyan. He is the son of Tommy Myers, who was a head football and baseball coach at LFHS. His mother, Carol Myers, is a former head gymnastics coach at Deerfield High School. New Trier: The Trevians did a whole lot of manufacturing in their 3-1 win over host Loyola Academy on April 7. They took advantage of 10 walks, two hit batsmen and five wild pitches to score their three runs. They finished with nine stolen bases. In fact, they scored their first run of the game in the third inning on a double steal: Grant Klenovich swiped second while Drew LaMotte took home. Logan Wible walked and scored on a wild pitch in the fourth. Then, in the fifth, Jake Reynolds (2 for 4) singled, stole two bases and came around on a wild pitch. Drew Fischer earned the win. He went five innings and stuck out seven. New Trier, which finished 4-1 on their spring trip to Indiana and Georgia, improved its overall record to 5-1. Loyola’s record dropped to 3-5. Fran O’Malley, who reached on a game-opening single, scored the team’s lone run on a bases-loaded walk to Mark Van Solkema. Alex Thomas and Danny Kelly had the team’s other base-knocks.

Kristin and Ryan give new definition to country living
Living in Chicago, eating one’s daily meals in three different countries would prove quite challenging. But for Kristin and Ryan McCain, a trip to Monaco provided a unique opportunity. “We started in Monte Carlo, having coffee and croissants, looking at all the yachts,” recalls Kristin of their vacation in March. “Then we took the scenic drive to Nice, with breathtaking views of the water. We visited the Musee Matisse and then had fresh salads and fresh pizza at an outdoor brasserie. “That evening, we drove to Dolceacqua, a little town in Italy. We ate at a total hole in the wall that was almost made out of a cave. But we had the most gourmet dinner, whatever the chef wanted us to try — pastas and wonder-

ful Italian wine made in the town.” Back in Monaco at the end of the night — where they stayed at the Fairmont Monte Carlo — they tried their hand at the renowned casino next door. The perfect day suffered a not-so-perfect ending. Explains Kristin, “We gave some money to the house.” Other highlights of their stay included a tour of the Prince’s Palace of Monaco and of the Musée Océanographique de Monaco, once headed by Jacques Cousteau. Then it was time to head home. Back on the North Shore, “we’ve had major vacation withdrawal,” Kristin says. “We miss all of those wonderful meals where you sit for hours enjoying each other’s company. But it’s nice to remember that long, fabulous day in different countries.” ■
