Graduation speakers need not be full of hot air
F
or seniors across the North Shore, whether they be thrilled about it or apprehensive, graduation day beckons. At some spots, the setting is immaculate, such as on the front lawn of Lake Forest High School. Certain graduations will feature valedictorians — after all there is achievement in life, and it deserves to be celebrated — while others in the area think honoring the top student is somehow wrong and have eliminated the tradition. Beyond the valedictorian, I am a big proponent of engaging a well-known speaker for graduations. One addendum: he or she should be known for accomplishments, not just for being a celebrity (no Kardashians). Not only do students get excited beforehand; they are more likely to listen during the talk. In both high school and college, I suffered through graduation speakers who were friends of the headmaster and president, respectively. While alumni such as John McPhee or Michael Eisner could have been recruited, both speakers instead were education administrators, a position never associated with eloquence or flair. I don’t recall one word. In 1977, Dr. Seuss spoke at Lake Forest College. Until the good doctor (whose real name was Theodor
we mean that literally. Because now that our coverlets,
Geisel) appeared on the podium to receive an honduvets, down, sheets and shams are 15-25% off, orary degree, President Gene Hotchkiss was unsure you can change your bedroom look for less. — despite his persuasions — if he would even speak, though the program said as much. But Dr. Seuss pulled out a poem from under his robe called “My Uncle Terwilliger on the Art of Eating Popovers” and started reading. It concluded: Do a lot of spitting out the hot air chicago hinsdale lake forest winnetka And be careful what you swallow. 773 404 2020 630 655 0497 847 295 8370 847 441 0969 The composition — with its pithy advice and shopbedside.com humor — is still cited often as one of the top graduation speeches of all time, even though he was finished in less than a minute. It’s funny how that works: America’s most famous address, which oc5.14 BSM NSW May sale.indd 1 curred in a spot called Gettysburg, was fewer than 300 words. Students who think writing longer means writing better should embrace brevity — that’s my graduation speech.

Al fresco … finally
After all of the frigid weather, North Shore natives in the mood for outdoor dining
Depot Neuvo in Wilmette. photography
by joel lerner
■ by bill mclean Eddie Cohen could not believe where he was sitting at Trifecta Grill in Winnetka. The Glencoe resident and his wife, Lynn, were at a table outside, waiting for the arrival of their appetizer. It was May 8, unusually warm and a little after 6 p.m. Days in April had felt a lot like days in a normal November along the North Shore. But Chicagoland had morphed from Nome temps to Tempe temps in May — just like that. “It’s such a short outdoor season for dining around here,” Eddie Cohen said. “You have to take advantage of a nice night like tonight.” Before last weekend, this year’s outdoor dining spring season was about as robust as a lightly drawn stick figure. “Nearly nonexistent,” said Bob Bansberg, general manager at Miramar Bistro in Highwood. “It’s sad. We’ve had one, maybe two days, when people were able to comfortably eat outside. People love to dine al fresco when it’s in the low 70s and there’s a light breeze, along with moonlight. “That’s relaxing, romantic,” he added. Look for outdoor furniture at restaurants to finally
emerge from hibernation and bask regularly, along with patrons, in sunlight. Salt enhances the flavor of entrees; pleasant weather enhances the overall outdoor-dining experience. “Moods of diners go up a notch when they eat outdoors,” said Fahd Alaoui, food and beverage manager at the Deer Path Inn in Lake Forest. “They’re happier, laughing more, enjoying the weather. “People,” he added, “show their love for a lot of things when the weather is beautiful.” People savor lamb on a spit, Deer Path Inn’s signature summer special on Wednesdays (rain dates are Thursdays) for its patio/indoor garden diners. “Our chef cooks it for four hours over natural charcoal, and it’s ready to go at 5 p.m.,” Alaoui said. The separate menu for Deer Path Inn garden patrons also includes filet mignon, venison sausage and grilled vegetables. Is there a more effective form of advertising than that of the aroma of food emanating from the plates of outdoor diners? Passersby get to enjoy more than a whiff of food prepared by executive chef Thierry Lefeuvre at Froggy’s
French Café in Highwood; they also get to take in the view of Froggy’s patio bar, aka the Greenhouse. “I’ve heard people say, ‘Look, that looks just like a French restaurant in France,’ ” said Rodrigo Lopez, in his 16th year as a bartender at Froggy’s. “When it’s 5 p.m., and the weather is nice, everybody wants to sit in our Greenhouse or outside. “Sometimes,” he added, “it gets a little loud (cars driving by on Green Bay Road), but they forget about that and enjoy the food.” Among the other potential hazards for outdoor diners are humidity, bugs, a sudden rainstorm and wind. “Wind can be a big enemy,” said Jeff Gilbert, owner of Temperance Beer Co., in Evanston. “Ideally you want a hint of wind and partly cloudy skies.” Temperance Beer Co., born at the end of last summer, is a brewery first, with a 2,000 square-foot tap room. But customers like to frequent the establishment’s beer garden in the late spring and summer months. “The German furniture we have out there adds to the beer-garden feel,” Gilbert said. “We have five communal dining >> page 11

tables in it, with long benches, as well as a multi-stem birch tree. People order their beer and either snack (popcorn, nuts) or buy food from area restaurants that come in and set their fare on tables; it’s similar to catering. “What I’ve noticed recently is how exited people are to finally get the chance to enjoy food and drinks outside. They’d been more pent-up than usual because of the tough weather in the winter and spring.” Ivy on a patio brick wall at two-year-old Trifecta Grill has yet to resemble the iconic foliage on the outfield walls at Wrigley Field. It’s early, though. The place with a city feel in a suburban setting is certainly a hit with its customers, offering small bites and large plates and its unique 21 Club-wine preserving systems. Outdoor diners at Trifecta can either sit at tables or on inviting lounge couches. “The ambience outside makes our customers feel comfortable,” said Erez Ron, Trifecta Grill’s manager. “Our patio is in an enclosed area, surrounded by trees. It’s beautiful, lush.” One of Depot Nuevo’s distinguishing outdoor-dining characteristics is its wrap-around porch, which seats between 60-80. The building is one of the oldest in Wilmette. Depot Nuevo specializes in “fresh fare … Latin flair.” Its bar was named one of the top 25 tequila bars in America by MediaPlanet in USA Today. “There’s something about eating outside,” said Ann Garrison, who co-owns Depot Nuevo with her husband, Rob. “There’s something about eating our wickedly popular chips and guacamole while watching cars and people go by. People think, ‘Oh, this is different, this is fun, this is festive.’ They also feel free, because they no longer have to wear a coat. “But what’s really special about eating outdoors is the community spirit. All of our porch diners get to enjoy the nice weather together.” Other North Shore restaurants with an enticing outdoor-dining option include Avli Estiatorio (Winnetka), The Happ Inn (Northfield), Convito Café & Market (Wilmette), Hackney’s on Harms (Glenview) and Bluegrass (Highland Park). ■

To cleanse or not to cleanse? Some swear by it, but detractors scoff at regimen ■ by joanna brown As Kenilworth native Sloane Isselhard girded for her 34th birthday, she felt a change was needed. Her busy law career, combined with a lack of interest in cooking, had jettisoned healthy eating habits. After the birth of her fourth child, Deerfield mother Liza Bronstein reached the same conclusion. “I was not on a good path,” Bronstein recalled. “I was eating peanut butter M&Ms and Diet Coke for dinner, and I didn’t want my kids growing up thinking that was okay.” Both women chose cleanses to jumpstart healthier habits. These programs involve a drastic change in a person’s eating habits to rid the body of toxins believed by many to cause fat, fatigue, memory loss and illness like diabetes. “I wasn’t looking for drastic weight loss, but a way to get more whole foods into my diet,” Isselhard said. “I had been eating really, really badly, and I needed to re-educate my body.” Detoxifying diet programs are big business: the American weight loss market was estimated to exceed $60 billion in revenue in 2012. Cleanse diets took off in the 1990s with the Master Cleanse. Celebrities like Demi Moore extolled the benefits of drinking a mix of lemon juice, maple syrup and cayanne Dr. Ari Levy pepper daily. Cleanse diets dictate a combination of dieting, fasting and avoiding certain foods altogether in an effort to flush the colon. Weight loss is often a side effect — and motivation for many cleansers to commit to programs anywhere from three-to-31 days in length. Both Isselhard and Bronstein say their cleanses began long-term changes in their behavior. Not all are sold on cleanses. Physician Ari Levy, a Highland Park native, commended the women’s decision to change their habits, but he cautioned them as well. Cleanse and detoxifying diets have little, if any, value for the body and offer the potential for negative side effects, he said. “Cleansing gives people a simple structure to exert self control in an area where they don’t feel like they have a lot of control,” said Dr. Levy, who now leads the Chicago-based Engaged Health Solutions. “But these diets have no proven health benefits, and actually have the potential for harm in both the short and long-term due to vitamin deficiencies
and imbalance in your electrolytes.” The human body should be able to process simple sugars and other processed foods on its own, Dr. Levy said. “But that’s assuming that we pay attention to what our bodies are telling us. Instead, we gain weight or we get a chronic illness because we’re not listening. We’re not allowing the body to detox as it normally should because we’re not doing what we’re supposed to be doing.” Melinda Beck, a Lake Forest High School graduate who is the health columnist for The Wall Street Journal, tackled cleanses in a column this year. “Some cleanses are often little more than fasting regimens,” she wrote. “The ‘master cleanse,’ devised to treat ulcers in the 1940s … leaves many nutrition experts scratching their heads.” Bronstein and her husband were conscious of risks when they searched for a diet program they could do together. Juice diets raised concerns for blood sugar spikes, and her busy family would not allow her to spend a week in the bathroom dealing with the side effects of so many other colon cleanse programs. She chose Isagenix, a program of one knife-and-fork meal per day plus two meal replacement shakes that promised to rid her body of toxicity and other stressors and address the nutritional deficiencies her poor eating habits left in their wake. She admits it was hard to get started. “Coming off the sugars I had been eating and all that Diet Coke was hard,” Bronstein said. “I was lethargic and had headaches and just didn’t feel great. But on the fourth day I woke up and felt like a whole new world had opened up. I had energy that I didn’t know where it had come from. It was wild.” Bronstein has since coached more than 40 people through the same transition, with results that range from weight loss to increased energy levels and better sleep patterns. Isselhard liked that the CLEAN diet program was developed by a physician, offered support by phone from nurses and online from a support group, and didn’t ask her to cook skin tightening too much. She, like Bronstein, has one traditional meal and wrinkle reduction two shakes daily, along with severalsun snacks damagewithin reversal boundaries; the diet eliminates soy, dairy, wheat, read meat, skin texture rejuvenation shellfish, potatoes, bananas and a host of other foods, but she still finds herself satisfied throughout the day. “You have to be motivated to do it. Motivated, not just curious,” she explained. Thirteen days into 21-day program, Isselhard said it was going smoothly. Sure, she was tired the first week, but she had no headaches or other side effects to complain about. She found that the second week, her mood improved greatly
Time for a renovation? No, not the house.

and the weight loss was noticeable. While Dr. Levy doesn’t encourage his patients to pursue fad diets or cleanses, he knows some do them anyway. He prefers that they wholly commit to one lifestyle change, and he encourages them to prioritize their health concerns. “Convert your words into actions and really commit to it; it doesn’t matter what it is,” he said. “But make a small change and test your integrity and follow-through. When you’re successful, amp it up.” In fact, Dr. Levy said, everyone should be pursuing simple and clean diets to feel better every day. Water is better than juice, black coffee is better than Diet Coke (because the caffeine comes from a natural source, rather than the artificial cola), and natural foods are better than processed foods. “Our tastes are acquired, not ingrained, and you can change your tastes over time,” he said. ■

Financially speaking, there are a few steps that all parties entering a real estate contract should take to ensure the smoothness of their path from home search and home listing to successful closing. For prospective buyers, these steps are especially crucial to a stress-free transaction. With the help of a certified, skilled REALTOR®, these steps will be easily undertaken and deliver the keys to your dream home! In a temperamental market, many lenders have become hesitant to underwrite loans for large sums of money. In such instances, pre-qualification for loans has become an essential home buying tool that benefits both the borrower and the lender. By obtaining loan qualification early and securing a mortgage lender, you are able to provide your Realtor® with a very clear idea of your home buying budget. By narrowing your home search to only the homes that are in your price range, you limit the range of your search and focus only on the homes that are smart choices for your finances and long-term goals. This, in turn, leads to an expedited closing, where the buyer and their Realtor® are assured not to run into the unexpected obstacle of being turned down for a loan at the last minute. By securing your loan before beginning your home search, not only do you have a more realistic picture of your financial capability, but you also ensure that your loan will perform as expected over time. For professional advice from an experienced Realtor, call Jean Wright at (847) 217-1906 or email at jwright@jeanwright.com

Style
Up close with Pascal I was honored and humbled when John Conatser, publisher and founder of Sheridan Road, Forest & Bluff and, most recently, North Shore Weekend, asked me if I would be interested in writing a regular column as a Style and Fashion Editor. This came about as we were discussing the upcoming 30th anniversary of my Glencoe salon, Pascal pour Elle.
John asked me a seemingly simple question – what my biggest learning had been over the last 30 years. Not so simple to answer. It wasn’t due to a lack of possibilities. Quite the opposite. You see, I can’t think of a single day during the last 30 years that I haven’t learned…about myself…about our people…about our craft…about trends and techniques in the beauty and fashion industry. We have always prided ourselves on the education and training we provide for our professional team of stylists, colorists and technicians. We invest in their training, often sending them to participate in conferences, runway shows, product meetings and advertising photo shoots to ensure that we are knowledgeable and proficient in the latest styles, techniques and available products.
What I realized, however, in thinking about pivotal moments was that one common thread connected all of my learnings in this business. It boils down to the questions we ask or, should I say, are asked of us. In other words, our learnings are driven by our clients. Every day, I am asked questions related to a particular look. It could be tied to hair, climate, fashion, texture, mood, you name it. And every question forces us to find answers that are right for that individual and that circumstance. These are my greatest learnings. They happen every day, based on conversations with my clients. And so I would like to invite you to share your thoughts and also ask me your questions about hair, makeup, style, fashion, you name it. The questions and comments can be personal or more general in nature. I will do my best to address them in a manner that can benefit the larger audience as well. I will also be reaching out to other stylists and beauty and fashion experts from time to time for their input, so that you can benefit from the advice of the area’s industry thought leaders. For next month’s column, we will look at the benefits and also the controversy surrounding hair straighteners. So please submit your questions and comments to: style@pascalpourelle.com. ■ —Pascal

theater review
Mixing humor with marital strife a brilliant concoction ■ by jill soderberg
That you will laugh—and laugh early and often--at August Strindberg’s classic “The Dance of Death” may seem unlikely in a play that depicts the misery of a marriage. But biting humor mixes brilliantly with marital strife in this compelling production, helmed by Henry Wishcamper in his directorial debut at Writers Theatre. As the wife in this fraught couple says of her plight at the end of the play, “Perhaps we laugh and cry in equal measure.” So too does the audience, uncomfortably absorbed in the dichotomy of despair and delight that propels the pair in their thrust and parry—a match of wits that delivers an indelible evening of affecting theatre. The story unfolds on a remote island, which is home to Edgar, an artillery captain, and his wife Alice, a former actress, whose 25-year marriage has devolved into bickering, manipulation, and contempt for each other, which they make no effort to hide. It’s Sweden in 1900 in this Nordic forerunner to Edward Albee’s “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” and its scenes of the pair’s relish in malicious oneupsmanship are similarly harrowing—“hate and love forged in a foundry of hell.” When Alice’s cousin Kurt, who introduced the couple to each other, becomes the quarantine officer on the island, he comes to call and witnesses their tortured existence. Kurt’s assessment: “I thought my marriage was rotten, but this is mindboggling.” Kurt, who has a romantic history with Alice, is overwhelmed when his desire for her is rekindled, but ultimately he becomes mere pawn in Edgar and Alice’s game of deceit. That Edgar is suffering from a heart ailment ups the ante in the dramatic battle. Writers Theatre veteran Larry Yando is nothing short of masterful as Edgar, whether commenting wryly on “our
long miserable mistake,” tormenting his wife, raging against his neighbors, or lapsing into catatonic trance. When Alice plays the piano as he performs his beloved dance of the boyars, his wild, flailing display provides one of those moments when the audience is laughing, even as his defiant dance gives the play its name. Shannon Cochran, who played in the 2001 Writers Theatre production of Strindberg’s “The Father,” gives Alice a slightly incongruous contemporary bearing but is elegantly assured in her role, delivering more than a few plum lines that garner laughs. Edgar’s cruel wit can be disarming, as when he, with sarcastic understatement, describes the marital taunting to Kurt, “We joke back and forth like this all the time.” Meanwhile Phillip Earl Johnson is charged with showing us a Kurt who is alternately sympathetic to the tortured marriage of Edgar and Alice and overcome with passion for his former flame. In this new adaptation by Irish playwright Conor McPherson, whose critically acclaimed “Port Authority” was a highlight of the current Writers Theatre season, the contemporary language never distracts. Yando’s pitchperfect delivery in speaking of his neighbor—“Just another career scumbag” or “That doctor always was a little dirt bag”—means we hear Strindberg anew. McPherson said of his work, always set in a single room, “It doesn’t take much to do my plays. A bit of furniture. A bit of light.” Similarly, the simple one-room setting of Strindberg’s “Dance of Death” in the close quarters of the book store theatre is ideal for staging a play in which the characters choose to be confined and isolated. To spend an evening in their thrall is to experience a rollercoaster drama of their hermetic torment and their sparring. “We are bound by some evil force,” says Alice. Or, as Edgar counters, “Can’t you indulge a little banter?”
Shannon Cochran (Alice) and Larry Yando (Edgar) star in “The Dance of Death” at Writers Theatre. Photography by Michael Brosilow
“The Dance of Death” runs through July 20 with performances Tuesday through Sunday (matinees on Saturday and Sunday) on the Writers Theatre stage at Books on Vernon, 664 Vernon Avenue, Glencoe. For tickets and information, call 847-242-6000 or visit www.writerstheatre.org. ■

2 good: Senior Samantha Schwartz (No. 2) has scored 52 career goals for the Highland Park High School girls soccer team.
■ by bill mclean
sports@northshoreweekend.com For Samantha Schwartz, the experience of watching her older brothers wrestle for Highland Park High School was often a harrowing one. Schwartz usually sat next to her mother, Robin, in a set of bleachers while either Joey or Benji engaged in a wrestling bout. “My stomach would turn,” recalls Schwartz, a high-scoring senior center-midfielder for HP’s soccer team. “My mom … she’d squeeze [my arm]. It was intense. It’s a frustrating sport to watch.” Joey Schwartz (HPHS, ’10] finished fourth at 119 pounds at the Class 3A state meet his senior year. Benji Schwartz (HPHS, ’11) also played soccer and liked to go through intense one-on-one soccer sessions with his little sister on a field at the Lutz Family Center, located a short throw-in’s distance from their back yard in Highland Park. “He challenged me, taught me all about toughness and how important that is in soccer,” Samantha Schwartz says. “One of his reminders was, ‘Own the field.’ ” Samantha Schwartz has never owned a piece of wrestling equipment. But she did occasionally walk around her house while wearing a brother’s headgear. “I’m sure I looked strange, wearing that with my long hair,” she says. Nobody wants to grapple with Schwartz, the soccer player and Brandeis (Mass.) University recruit. A year after scoring 14 goals for the Giants for the second straight season, she has amassed a team-high 19 goals — including four in
photography by george pfoertner
a 7-0 defeat of Maine East on May 6 — for an 8-7-1 squad this spring. Schwartz struck for a hat trick in HP’s 4-1 win over Deerfield High School on April 22, and she set a program mark when she tallied at least a goal in an eighth consecutive match on May 7. Her career-goals total through May 10 was 52. “I love her fierce competitiveness,” Giants coach Kate Straka says of the fourth-year varsity player and one of five captains. “[Many of her goals] this year have been unassisted because she’s very good at creating opportunities for herself and because of her drive and feistiness. “Sam is quick and agile, a player who demands a lot from herself,” the coach adds. “Nineteen goals already … that’s quite a number. But it’s not surprising; she fights for everything in the middle, and her teammates look to her for a spark.” The daughter of former University of Wisconsin soccer defender Jeremy Schwartz, she has played several club seasons for FC United. Her U18 team captured a national showcase title in Las Vegas in February, winning its final two matches via penalty kicks. “I’m excited that she’ll play soccer at the next level,” Straka says. “Brandeis’ program is an extremely lucky one.” Schwartz’s talent is one of the Giants’ glaring assets. “She does a lot for us,” says Highland Park senior defender and captain Lucy Hoffman. “Everybody counts on her. She’s tenacious and real smart. Sam has become very good at bringing the ball down, controlling it and distributing it. “I love the way she puts the ball in the net.” Schwartz and Hoffman will serve as camp counselors for grade-schoolers in Eagle River, Wis., beginning in early
June and running through early August. Schwartz is a sailing and soccer instructor. “I enjoy it so much up there,” Schwartz says. “You get to be yourself, and everybody is so accepting. The kids look up to the counselors as role models. That’s what I did when I attended the camp as a camper.” Schwartz played on Highland Park’s sophomore basketball team as a freshman. Highly charged hoops battles with her brothers at home no doubt helped her prepare for that endeavor. But a love for dance made her retire her high tops. Schwartz has performed hip-hop numbers for the school’s Jammers Dance Team since her sophomore year. During a PE class her freshman year, Schwartz stood among peers as the teacher went over various wrestling moves. The sister of two accomplished wrestlers was not impressed. Schwartz probably felt like a tenured English professor in a room full of Reading 101 students. “I remember hearing the teacher and thinking, ‘OK, this is all so basic,’ ” she says. Net worth: NT benefits from Lee’s versatility ■ by bill mclean
Chris is getting better and better at doubles. Both Chris and Thomas are competitive, and Tad has been looking at many combinations to help him figure out the best ones for the lineup.” Lee and Hanley had played twice together before last weekend’s Deerfield Invite, netting a victory in straight sets in their debut. Nearly two years ago, they faced each other in a singles match at a sanctioned tournament. Hanley emerged victorious. “Chris,” Hanley says, “is playing well for us as a player who’s definitely in the top half of our varsity.” Lee is also adjusting well, day to day — and position to position. “I’m adapting,” he says. “They’ve been good experiences, playing where I’ve played in our lineup.”
sports@northshoreweekend.com Chris Lee has seen it all for New Trier’s boys tennis team this spring: Penetrating groundstrokes, big serves, soft serves, kick serves, angled volleys, dinks, slice backhands and forehands, topspin lobs and easy lobs, floaters. Name a shot, any shot. “Our coach [Tad Eckert] likes to mix things up and look for the best chemistry [in doubles pairings],” says Lee, a freshman. Lee has battled at Nos. 2 and 3 singles and at Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 doubles for the Trevians’ varsity in his rookie season. It might be a state record for number of positions played by one netter in a season. Lee is Ben Zobrist in tennis shoes. Zobrist is a super utility ballplayer for the Tampa Bay Rays, having played first base, second base, shortstop, third base and all of the outfield positions in a career that began in 2006. Lee teamed with junior Thomas Hanley in a bracket featuring Nos. 1 and 2 doubles teams at the Deerfield Invite on May 9-10. The pair went 2-2, downing tandems from Deerfield High School and Glenbrook South, as a makeshift squad of Trevians placed fourth (37 points) at the eight-team meet without the services — and serves — of senior and top singles player Alex Galoustian (injury) and sophomore doubles standouts/brothers Scott and Tom Bickel. “Chris destroys it,” Hanley says of Lee’s first serve. “When he gets it in, we’re happy.” Lee admits he needs to improve the consistency of his serves. That would make life

considerably easier at the net for Hanley, who relies on steady, fast serves to end points quickly. Lee and Hanley played some of their best tennis in the second set of a second-round match at the Deerfield Invite. They went up 4-3 on Stevenson’s Colin Harvey/Andrew Komarov — the third-place duo at state last spring — before falling 6-1, 6-4. “Chris is normally a quiet guy,” says Hanley, who has won doubles matches with Wyatt Mayer this spring. “But he got pretty loud [against Harvey/Komarov] with
a, ‘Let’s go!’ ” Lee played in his very first doubles tournament with his younger brother, Matthew, now a seventh-grader. Chris Lee was 12 at the time, when the Lees lived in Florida, and the brothers split two matches at Saddlebrook Resort in Wesley Chapel. “Chris is learning doubles, learning the nuances of doubles,” says Trevians assistant coach Jerry Morse-Karzen. “His serve is powerful and he has a pretty good forehand. “A lot of kids don’t play doubles regularly [before entering high school],” he adds. “But
Notable: NT competes at the Central Suburban League South meet at Maine South on May 16-17. … The Trevians vie for state berths at their sectional on May 23-24. New Trier finished fourth at state last spring, getting five wins from Galoustian for the second year in a row and a Round of 16 doubles appearance from the Bickel brothers. … Mayer lost to eventual Nos. 1-2 singles champion Peter Tarwid in the first round of last weekend’s Deerfield Invite, before winning a pair of consolation-round matches. Cory Schwartz (2 wins) also played singles for New Trier. Eckert deployed Ricky Mayer/Adam Jacobs, Gil Fitzgerald/Matt Mead and Ben Yamaguchi/Aaron Frankl in doubles. Fitzgerald/Mead finished runnerup in the Nos. 3-4 doubles draw. ■

Attack mode: Brian “Cal” Callahan (right) jockeys against Lake Forest’s Lukas Munoz for position during earlier action this spring. photography
Silence is golden

Quiet Callahan making plenty of noise as Loyola’s top attackman ■ by bill mclean
sports@northshoreweekend.com About 90 years ago, a woman visitor at the White House revealed to then-U.S. Vice President Calvin Coolidge that she had made a friendly wager. “I bet I could get you to say at least three words,” the woman informed him at a dinner party. Coolidge, without looking at the visitor, quietly and succinctly replied, “You lose,” and never said another word in her presence that night. Coolidge had once again lived up to his nickname, “Silent Cal.” Another quiet “Cal” — senior Brian “Cal” Callahan — plays attack for Loyola Academy’s boys lacrosse team. “I get teased about how quiet I am by my coaches and my teammates,” the 5-foot-11, 160-pound Callahan says. “But it’s all in good fun.” All he does is let his stick do most of the talking for him. The stick wouldn’t last a second in a library headed by a strict, “Shhhh”-spewing librarian. Callahan poured in four goals, including three in the fourth quarter, in Loyola’s 10-3 defeat of visiting Forest Hills (Mich.)
High School on May 9. A scant 85 seconds separated the Glenview resident’s final two tallies. “His hands … he’s got great hands,” says Ramblers coach Rob Snyder, whose twotime reigning state champions are 11-3 and ranked third in Illinois and 21st in the Midwest by laxpower.com. “Cal,” he adds, “sees the field great and has a tremendous sense of spacing to go with his great stick. But he likes to stay out of the spotlight.” That was impossible for him at the end of the 2013-14 hockey season, when the Amateur Hockey Association Illinois (AHAI) named Callahan, a defenseman for Loyola Gold, the JJ O’Connor Player of the Year. “It was something new,” Callahan says of giving lacrosse a try in the eighth grade. “I liked it because it’s similar to hockey. It was something fun to do during my break from hockey.” A second-team all-state pick by the Illinois High School Lacrosse Association last year, Callahan paces LA in scoring this spring and plans to continue his lacrosse career (while majoring in economics) at McGill University, a perennial power based in Montreal, Canada, which competes against men’s lax teams in Canada and NCAA teams.
“He’s a scorer, oh yeah, a guy who finds the back of the cage often,” says LA senior attack Jack Penn, who scored twice in the win against Forest Hills. “The way Cal draws the attention from other teams, to be honest, that opens it up for the rest of us. He’s more consistent as a shooter this year, and with the way he dodges and the way he shoots … Cal just destroys kids out there.” The title of a YouTube video featuring Callahan on a lacrosse field is, “Loyola’s Brian Callahan With A Sick One-hander.” It lasts 15 seconds, with the last eight seconds showing a slow-motion version of the action in the first seven seconds. In it, Callahan sprints from behind an opposing goalie and, using only his right arm, whips a shot from about three feet out. Callahan releases the ball near his right hip. It looks almost like a running forehand in tennis. The goalie in the video raises his stick, thinking Callahan’s snappy shot will head north. But the ball zips past the keeper’s left knee and jostles the net. The goalie’s ensuing body language yells, “What just happened!?” Sick, indeed — with “sick” meaning “awfully good.” The video has been viewed 955 times. Callahan has devoted much of his recent
summers to traveling with True Lacrosse, an elite club in Illinois. The squad typically heads to the East Coast, lacrosse’s hotbed and an ideal destination for seniors interested in honing their games against the nation’s best players before hitting lax fields on college campuses in the fall. “I’ll still find time to play hockey in a men’s league around here and play some golf with [Penn] this summer,” says Callahan, whose parents, Brian and Mimi, gave him his nickname many years ago. The Ramblers’ reticent one also intends to learn some French this summer because McGill University is an English-language school located in primarily French-speaking Quebec. “I’ll probably try to pick up a few French words before I start there,” he says. Emphasis on few. Notable: LA’s Will Nowesnick, Jack Gorman Michael Neumeyer and Johnny Burns also scored in the 10-3 defeat of Forest Hills HS on May 9. Mark Dezell and Kevin Corbett shared goalie duties for the victors. Corbett didn’t allow a goal after entering the game in the fourth quarter. … LA bowed 18-5 to visiting Culver (Ind.) Academy on May 10. The loss halted the Ramblers’ winning streak at 11 games. ■

Up, up … and over
HP’s Smoliak soars to personal-best height and Lake County championship ■ by kevin reiterman
sports@northshoreweekend.com You won’t find him sitting alone and fretting over the next height. It’s just not like that for Highland Park High School pole vaulter Eddie Smoliak. It’s not in his athletic DNA. Competing in a sport — even the mind-bending, bodytwisting kind — is supposed to be fun. Not drudgery. Smoliak loves to take flight — he went over 14 feet at the Lake County Meet at Deerfield High School on May 9 — but he’s about as grounded as they come. “The beautiful thing about Eddie is that he’s not a head case,” said Highland Park head coach Kevin Caines. “He doesn’t dwell on negatives. He lets things go.” “Thinking about things too much only makes things worse,” said Smoliak. “You don’t want to have your mind clogged. “I used to go through some rituals,” the HP junior added. “But I got rid of them. Now I just pick up the pole and go.” Smoliak knows how to put a bad vault to the side. His second attempt at 14-0 was a real dud. “But you saw it,” said fellow HP vaulter Alec Deer. “He came right back.” Smoliak leaped for joy after clearing 14-0 to win the county crown. “Making 14-0 is a big deal for me,” said the 6-foot-1, 178pound Smoliak, who is adjusting quite nicely to a longer and slightly heavier pole. “It’s nice for him to get over 14-0 before the (upcoming) sectional,” said Caines, noting that Smoliak’s PR was 13-3. “And for him to keep improving by leaps and bounds says a lot about him.” Smoliak definitely is one of the unique talents on HP’s track and field team this spring. In addition to the pole vault, he’s a point-getter in the two throwing events: discus and shot put. “I do enjoy an occasional throw,” said the Giant with a magnetic personality. “It’s cool to be a discus thrower. It’s fun to be in that crowd. “But I’m a state vaulter, not a state thrower,” said Smoliak, who threw the discus 114-2 at the county meet. For him, a track and field meet is the perfect environment. He’s in his element, when hanging out with fellow vaulters and coaches. He constantly chews the fat with them.
Smo-kin' good: Highland Park High School’s Eddie Smoliak clears a height during the Lake County Meet. He made 14-feet to take first place. photography by jon durr
He basically turns into the mayor of Vaultville. “I’m always happy at meets,” said Smoliak, who hugged fellow competitors and thanked all of the spotters, coaches and meet officials at the end of the pole vault competition. “I don’t want to be overly serious. I want to chill. I want to relax and have fun.” He wants to chow down on beef jerky after a three-hour meet. “I love beef jerky,” said Smoliak. Fun is the operative word here. “Eddie is fun to be around at practice and at meets,” said
Deer, who took sixth in the county meet (12-0). “And he loves helping out others,” Deer added. “He’s not selfish at all. He’s the first one to offer you a hand.” Notable: The Giants scored 31 points to take 10th place in the 18-team Lake County Meet. The other placers were Shealtial Israel in the high jump (6th, 5-10), Angel Estrada in the 1600 meters (4:35.14), Ryan Kriozere in the 300 hurdles (40.89) and 110 hurdles (5th, 15.32) and the 4x800 relay team (3rd, 8:09.19). ■

Highland Park: All-league guard David Sachs, who plays his club basketball with the Rising Stars, has received a scholarship from Division II Minnesota State University. The 6-foot-2 Sachs, a junior, averaged 13.1 points and 3.4 assists per game this winter.
Highland Park: Jeremy Trudell, a 6-5, 240-pound all-conference lineman, will play Division III football for DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., next fall.
Lake Forest: The Scouts captured the eighth-team Deerfield Invite on May 10, getting championship efforts from senior Peter Tarwid (Nos. 1-2 singles) and Scott Christian/Connor O’Kelly (Nos. 1-2 doubles). Scouts junior Brice Polender reached the Nos. 1-2 singles final after edging second-seeded Ben VanDixhorn of Libertyville in a three-set semifinal. The LF tandem of Ben Kasbeer/Parker Marsh placed third at Nos. 3-4 doubles, while juniors Greg Frauenheim and Jordan O’Kelly finished fourth at Nos. 1-2 doubles for the Scouts (68 points). Runner-up Highland Park High School (46 points) got first-place points from fourth-seeded Nick Zazove/Jonny Raab at Nos. 3-4 doubles. Giants Max Gordon/ Brandon Lew went 3-1 at Nos. 1-2 doubles, with two of the wins coming in the back draw.
Highland Park: Linebacker Jason Goldsmith (6-1, 215) will be a preferred walk-on at the University of Illinois. The all-conference linebacker led the Giants in tackles (79) during the 2013-14 season.
New Trier: The Trevians will send two singles players — junior Julia Siebert and senior Madelaine Murray — and one doubles tandem — junior Cece Bishop and senior Tristan Peters — to this weekend’s

Highland Park: Three Giants — Dylan Abbott, Greg Biagi and Jeff Brewer — have qualified to the IHSA state meet, which will be held at Hinsdale Central High School on May 16-17. The Giants finished fourth (138.40) at the Stevenson Sectional on May 10. Abbott claimed runner-up honors on pommel horse (8.45). Lake Forest’s Hayes having rookie success — on the track ■ by kevin reiterman
sports@northshoreweekend.com Running from first to third with a helmet on is how he used to show off his speed. A couple of summers ago, Conner Hayes went to a baseball showcase in Long Island, N.Y., and quickly turned more than a few heads — when he ran the 60 in a head-shaking 6.4 seconds. But the baseball thing at Lake Forest High School didn’t really work out for the 6-foot-6, 190-pound Hayes. Son of former Big Leaguer Von Hayes, an all-star outfielder for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1989, this senior speedster put down his bat and glove and went out for the school’s track and field team. Can you say instant success? On May 9 at the Lake County Meet at Deerfield High School, Hayes looked like a revved-up, souped-up Maserati as the anchor leg of 4x100 relay. He took a handoff from No. 3 man Jack Blumeyer and blasted to the finish line. “He killed it,” said teammate Connor Adams, who ran leadoff and handed the baton off to No. 2 man Austin McIlvaine. “Which is not really surprising. He’s fast.” Hayes’ fast finish allowed the Scouts to win the race in 42.72. Barrington, which featured a pair of 100-meter finalists, came in second in 43.43. Hayes was competing in the 4x100 relay for the very first time. “Coach (Coach John Brumund-Smith) just threw me in there,” said Hayes. “Having my dad’s genes helps a lot,” he added. Hayes’ other sport is football. He was behind David Glynn and John Preschlack on the wide receiver depth chart. But he did have some big moments, including a 26-yard diving catch at the two-yard line in a playoff win against Chicago Hubbard. “My job was to go in there and stretch the

defense,” said Hayes. He also was an important practice player. Just ask Adams, a cornerback. “I had to cover him one-on-one every single day,” said Adams. “Going against him helped me to match [game] speed.” Brumund-Smith loves the way Hayes has taken to track and field. He’s been a rookie sensation. “It’s been great having him on the team,” said the LF coach. “He’s been a nice surprise. Last year, we had Scott Powell come out for the team for the first time as a senior. And that also worked out really well.” Hayes definitely passes the eye test. “He just looks like an athlete,” the coach
added. Hayes’ skills go beyond the track portion of this sport. He also has fared well in one of the field events, leaping 21-7 in the long jump. “Track has given me a sense of accomplishment,” said Hayes, who plans to study civil or mechanical engineering at the University of Florida next year. Hayes also has enjoyed the camaraderie of this LF track team. The Scouts have a stable of strong sprinters who have a chance to do well at conference and in the state series. “We just have to polish things up,” said Adams. Finding the right combinations for the upcoming sectional will be the trick.
“Having so many good sprinters is a good problem to have,” said Brumund-Smith. Notable: Matthew Mekaelian was the Scouts’ other winner at the county meet. The junior displayed a great kick to win the 1600 meters in 4:25.97. The Scouts, who finished seventh with 47 points, also received solid work from Robert Schyns. He was second in the 300 hurdles (49.45), fourth in the 110 high hurdles (4th, 15.31) and fourth in the long jump (21-9). The team had two placewinners in the 200 meters: Nick Frystak (4th, 23.06) and Jack Blumeyer (5th, 23.13). LF’s 4x200 relay took fifth, while the 4x400 relay placed eighth. ■

Olivia Vallone (5th, 100 hurdles, 16.95), Dianna Mzyk (4th, high jump, 5-4), Mary Rose Donahue (4th, pole vault, 8-6) and Lizzy Lynch (4th, long jump, 16-7). LF finished second in the 4x800 relay (9:55.66), third in the 4x200 relay (1:49.60) and fourth in the 4x400 relay (4:14.17). Loyola: Highlighted by Kathryn House, Hannah Hess, Sarah Kelly, Francesca LaToracca, Alex Nino and 4x400 relay team, the host Ramblers captured team honors (189 ½ points) at the GCAC Meet on May 10. House was a three-time conference champ. The sophomore won the 3200 (11:51.96) and 800 (2:19.29), while she teamed with Hess, Emma Thomas and Jackie McDonnell in the 4x400 (4:08.93). LaToracca was a double winner: discus (106-3) and shot put (35-11). Nino won the vault (7-6), while Hess took first in the 300 hurdles (48.33) and Kelly was first in the 1600 (5:16.61). New Trier: The Trevians, who finished second in the team standings (153 points) behind Evanston (201 points), went 1-2 in three events at the CSL South Meet on May 8 at Maine South. Caroline Fix (11:45.09) and Kaitlin Frei (11:45.94) took the top two spots in the 3200 meters. Mimi Smith (5:00.01) and Kelli Schmidt (5:26.35)
were the top two finishers in the 1600 meters. And Nicole Karabas (10-6) and Claire Egerter (8-6) placed 1-2 in the pole vault. NT’s took first in two relays: Kelli Schmidt, Oona Jung-Beeman, Katie Gew and Molly Schmidt in the 4x800 (9:47.07) and Madeline Murray, Nicole Lamagno, Rose Gorski and Kate Holly in the 4x200 (1:47.39). NT took runner-up honors in the other two relays: Madoline O’Dwyer, Murray, Lamagno and Gorski in the 4x100 (49.74) and Jacalyn Joseph, Tara Smart, Gorski and Molly Schmidt in the 4x400 (4:07.73). Smart added a second in the 400 (58.62), while Gorski (200 meters), Alison Borsotti (shot put), Ariel Swett (discus) and Carter Burch (800 meters) took thirds.

head south of the equator for getaway Patty and Ken Pell of Highland Park travel quite a bit to places such as Mexico and the Netherlands, but they’ve never really considered the Caribbean a destination. That changed in February when they vacationed in Aruba. “It’s known for its powdery sand and turquoise water, but it’s much more than that,” says Ken about the tiny island, which is near the coast of Venezuela. Si x ty nationa l ities comprise the population of 115,000. Schoolchildren learn four languages — English, Spanish, Dutch and Papiamento, the native tongue. “It’s amazing how diverse it is — the people, food and ecosystems,” notes Ken, explaining that while one side of the island is beautiful beach, the other side is sand dunes and caves which remind one of Arizona. Staying at the Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino, Patty spent many nights watching the sun set before the couple would eat dinner. Papiamento Restaurant — situated in an old house with tables around the pool — was a favorite. Explaining that they’re not just beach people, the Pells enjoyed other activities, such as shopping in the capital, Oranjestad, which welcomes hundreds from cruise ships each day. Still, it was hard to beat the Caribbean’s main draw for winterweary North Shore residents. “Standing in that turquoise water and looking at that blue sky,” muses Patty, “I thought, ‘How did we get so lucky?’ ” — David Sweet
