This yacht club knows the ropes

hen one summons the phrase “yacht club,” different images shoot into the mind. Thurston Howell III — who often sported a yachting cap on “Gilligan’s Island” — may be the first person to show up in the imagination, accompanied soon after by his wife, Lovey. Or perhaps the picture of an endless row of immaculate large boats in a harbor — manned by crews resplendent in white — pops up, followed by the soundtrack of cocktails clinking in the clubhouse. The North Shore Yacht Club fits neither stereotype. Despite a lengthy pedigree (it opened in 1935), the volunteer-run club in Highland Park is low key. Kayaks can be rented, and fire pits abound. The members? Consider this tidbit from a press release: “NSYC members are a warm and welcoming group.” It’s doubtful yachters in Newport are making the same claim. After nearly 90 installments of Perfect Weekend, Laura and Steven Knapp have captured the prize for shortest trip. They prefer to head from their Highland Park home to the yacht club, where Steve serves as vice commodore. Does this poobah look or sound like Thurston Howell III? Turn to Perfect Weekend in the back of this paper to find out. Smooth sailing doesn’t come to mind when one

thinks about a funeral home. But Jim Iacubino, who has owned Wenban Funeral Home on the North Shore for almost 40 years, has put hundreds of families at ease when they’re devastated by loss. Given his job, there’s a particular loss he mourns. “I wish we were still called ‘undertakers’,” he says, underwhelmed by the modern-day title of funeral director. “We undertake things for people so that they can focus on their families and what they need to while they’re grieving.” Read about his stellar service in Sunday Breakfast. Too many Allied soldiers and others who were part of D-Day — the invasion of Normandy 70 years ago that was the beginning of the end of World War II — needed funerals after that June 6 battle. Like the Holocaust survivors discussed in this space two weeks ago, few remain of the 160,000-strong force. But the importance of that day still resonates. Felner landed at Normandy six months after the invasion, catching the final days of the Battle of the Bulge with the 69th Infantry Division in the European Theater. He fought across Belgium and Germany, earning a Bronze Star Medal for capturing 32 Germans. He was also part of the advanced troops who liberated the Buchenwald concentration camp. Career in men’s clothing is tailor-made for Highland Park native ■ by jenna schubert When it comes to selling custom formal menswear, Albert Karoll is the man best suited for the job. The Highland Park native got his start in the menswear industry a few years after graduating from the University of Michigan when he joined his grandfather’s company, Karoll’s Red Hangar Shops. At the time, the family business had 14 locations throughout Chicagoland, but the recession of the late 1980s caused the company to go out of business. Utilizing his experience, the haberdasher began selling custom-made men’s clothing on a direct-sale basis, by scheduling appointments with men in their own homes or offices. In 1989, he bought Richard Bennett — a renowned custom tailor store in Chicago which this year is celebrating its 85th anniversary. Currently, he sees clients in their homes or offices across the North Shore and oversees the store operations. Besides custom tailoring, what other services do you offer? We carry a small but tasteful collection of ready-made sportswear – golf lifestyle and casual clothing. Also, our alteration services are a big part of our business and are very important for our clients. Even if it’s clothing they bought elsewhere, they can bring it to us. We’re not just a Turn Style store – we want to be very personal and determine what our clients’ needs are. We also sell cuff links, neckties, belts, suspenders, and pocket squares.

What recent trends have you seen in men’s formalwear? Fit has changed a lot in the last year or two. Suits are definitely slimmer fitting; plain front trousers are a trend, as opposed to the baggier pleated trousers; and the width of the shoulders on jackets is a little narrower. However, many of our clients are between their 40s and 60s, and the suits that they see in GQ magazine may be stylish but are not practical or comfortable for the average man. So, we try to hit the middle point for our clients: we give them a cleaner, trimmer fit, but yet the suits are still comfortable and functional. Do you tailor suits for women? We do, and it’s a growing part of our business. Our women’s Sales Manager Cathy Marsom is excellent, and we have female tailoring staff members in our store. So, we’re not just putting female clients into men’s clothes – that’s really critical. Our professional women clients haven’t found many other places to buy tailored business clothing. Do you tailor tuxedos for wedding and special events? Absolutely. We do a lot of grooms and wedding parties. I tell grooms, “The amount of time and financial investment that goes into planning this 6-hour window of your life warrants you having a really good tuxedo to wear. You’ll look great, and you’ll wear it again – it’s a great investment.” How many weeks of notice do you need to complete a custom-tailored suit? For a first-time client, there’s additional

work that goes into the measurements, developing the pattern, and doing fittings; so we ask for at least six to eight weeks notice. The subsequent orders require less time. What is the price of a custom suit? Generally speaking, a custom suit runs from $2,000 to $3,000. It could be less

Firm boosts employment prospects for those with autism ■ by angelika labno Though Oran Weitzberg had earned a fouryear degree from Roosevelt University, he was not successful in his retail jobs. As a highfunctioning person living with Asperger’s Syndrome — an autism spectrum disorder — skills like time management hampered him. Determined to find a career fit for their son, his parents, Moshe and Brenda Weitzberg of Highland Park, launched Aspiritech, a nonprofit organization that employs people with autism for software testing and for other services. “Many [people with high-functioning autism] go on to college or try college, and then they fall through the cracks,” said Brenda Weitzberg, executive director. “Very capable young adults are sitting at home, which further leads to depression and anxiety.” According to a 2013 study published in the journal Autism, young adults on the autism spectrum — which includes a range of neurological disorders — are less likely to find work than their peers with other types of disabilities. Only a third of those studied were currently working. The couple saw an opportunity with software testing, as it requires attention to minute details, precision, focus and the ability to perform repetitive operations. “Our people see really subtle defects in software, and time and time again, clients are thrilled at the work they do because they find issues that most people would miss,” said Marc Lazar, the organization’s main autism specialist. Lazar offered an example from one of their clients, Empire Carpets. While previewing a carpet in one’s home on Empire’s website, Aspiritech’s engineers noticed the

carpet contained the wrong texture. Jamie Specht — who completed some college but who lacks a degree — has worked at Aspiritech for three years. “So many people on the (autism) spectrum can’t pass interviews and end up working in jobs like bagging at a grocery store, even though these may be poor fits and not offer any intellectual challenges,” she said. “Aspiritech is not like that — it offers a challenge and even caters to my strengths, one of which is being detail-focused.” Unlike many programs, Aspiritech trains, employs and supports on site. The process begins with a screening, after which the best candidates are invited to go through a hands-on training program, which was designed by Moshe. This serves as an evaluation period to see whether they enjoy the work, excel at it and get along with other employees. Successful completion of the training typically leads to an employment offer with Aspiritech. “We’ve had three success stories already of people going on to competitive, mainstream workplaces,” Lazar said. “They had the skills all along, but they needed to improve their social skills and get some confidence.” To ease the transition to a professional work setting, Aspiritech tackles obstacles. It takes into account light sensitivity, particularly fluorescent lights, and utilizes noise-cancelling headphones to deflect auditory distractions. Lazar also notes that employees thrive on clear instructions and a sense of predictability, as surprises may obstruct productivity. Arguably the biggest growth for employees comes from social activities that Lazar incorporates. Several times a month, they head to restaurants or go bowling. Saturdays are team-building activities in

the form of various sports. “We found that a lot of our employees are now initiating social activities on their own, calling up co-workers, and we see them blossoming socially,” said Lazar. The organization has come a long way from its beginnings in 2008. In January, the organization was one of 14 model employment programs lauded by Dr. Laura Klinger of TEACHH Autism Program. Aspiritech recently moved into a bigger office in Highwood from its initial space in Highland Park. The new location houses a business development director, two autism

specialists, approximately 20 test engineers, with a few new trainees on the horizon. Business revenue doubled last year. Asperitech's annual budget is about $300,000 a year. “The revenue will support meaningful and gainful employment for all our test engineers and allow us to expand and accept more people off the waitlist,” said Brenda Weitzberg, adding that there are hundreds on the waiting list. “Our goal is to have more businesses become aware of our quality and to try us out so that we can keep people employed and hire others.” ■

World of numbers keeps Bennett active with next generation ■ by katie rose mceneely Mike Bennett is an accounting and auditing tutor. He lives in Fort Sheridan. Reading: I’m finally getting “The Lord of The Rings” read — the first book of the ring trilogy. I’ve owned it for years, and I’ve never gotten to it. I’m reading “The City of God” by Augustine, and I’m reading a book of short stories that I bought used at the Lake Forest Library book sale last year, called “Great Spy Stories from Fiction,” edited by the former head of the CIA. There are plenty of things on the waiting list. Listening: I’m listening to junior high school students in my Sunday school class, trying to get a better understanding of what’s driving each of them, so I can be more helpful to them. I’m listening to NPR, WBEZ in the morning and WDCB College of DuPage in the car — it has jazz all day. Watching: One of the regular programs I like to watch is “The McLaughlin Group.” Sometimes I just sit and watch what comes next, which tends to be a mix of fairly good, I think, BBC-produced sitcoms. Following: I am following, with some interest and greater disappointment, politics in the United States. I’m more and more disturbed by the interest in posturing on both sides of the political aisle rather than in getting the peoples’ business done. Activity: The good luck that seems to have followed me my whole life has followed me

into retirement. My former employer has continued to ask me to provide some services on a consulting basis, which is interesting because I like the company and the things I am asked to do are things I am particularly interested in —board of directors, secretarial functions, minutes, agendas, facilitating the workflow of the board of directors. Just about the time I was retiring, it became practical to deliver online tutoring services to college and university auditing and accounting students. That’s my field. I remember being a frustrated beginning student. So I get a kick out of tutoring college students in the same position I was once in in getting over their confusion. I’m an online tutor and part-time employee of Pearson Education Systems. I’ve been an amateur trombonist my whole life. I last had the opportunity to play in high school, and it’s never fit the schedule since. Beginning last fall, I was able to fit into my schedule playing with a community orchestra, Lake Forest Civic Orchestra, which plays at Gorton. I am a humble member of the trombone section. I’ve had an opportunity to put to work my professional experience and my interest in Lutheran things to serve on three different boards. The largest one is Lutheran Social Services of Illinois. There are a couple other smaller ones. Those are interesting things, enjoyable things; I think they’re worth doing. Plus I get to read a lot more

than when I had to go to work every day. Eating: My wife and I are continuing to eat mostly at home. We never have been very frequent restaurant diners. We both like a lot of vegetables. What is your favorite mistake? Almost 40 years ago, when I was divorced and spent a lot of time with my son from my first marriage, I made fried chicken. I was

learning how to cook by trial and error. This was the first time I’d cooked fried chicken without supervision. I fried the chicken for 30 minutes or so on high heat — it was absolutely impossible to eat because I was too stubborn to believe I needed to turn down the heat. That’s a pretty good longstanding mistake that illustrates how my brain works: I’m stubborn. ■

■ by ann marie scheidler I must admit that when I arrived at Wenban Funeral Home to pick up owner Jim Iacubino, I did so with uneasiness. After all, a meal with the director of a Lake Forest funeral home — even one celebrating its 125th anniversary — wasn’t exactly the dream scenario on a sunny day. But my nervousness was unfounded. “Is this a busy time for you?” I ask timidly as Jim hung up the phone in his business off of Western Avenue. “Not really,” he says. “We don’t have a busy season. I tried to offer a two-for-one sale once — but it wasn’t that successful.” This quick sense of humor and ability to redirect an uncomfortable conversation is exactly what has given him staying power in a business that is, by its nature, entrenched in grief. Growing up on the South Side of Chicago, Jim was surrounded by a large extended family. “We had aunts, uncles, cousins — many generations,” remembers Jim, who enjoys pancakes and bacon when he makes Sunday breakfast at home. “We were always going to funerals. It was just part of life. “And even at a young age, I remember being impressed with the undertakers, thinking they were important people who helped others when they really needed it.” Even though he dabbled with the idea of becoming a computer programmer (“I was an excellent student, but the other programmers were pretty stiff”) Jim ultimately attended and graduated from Mortuary Science School at Southern Illinois University. He and his wife Dorothy — whom he met when he was 14 — found their way up to Lake Forest in the early 1970s when the Chicago neighborhood they grew up in was overtaken by gangs. “We were literally run out of town,” says Jim. Newly graduated, Jim heard that Wenban had a job opening in Lake Forest. Founded by Curtis Gideon Wenban in 1889 and located at 233 E. Deerpath, Curtis opened the funeral home and ambulance service along with his coach-andlivery business. T he original building was constructed of blocks made of cement and sand that he had hauled up from Forest Park Beach. Curtis was joined in the funeral business by his sons Frederick and George,

who eventually sold the funeral home to Jim in 1976. Jim kept the funeral home on Deerpath for a decade until he moved it to its current location. Wenban offers many options after the first painful phone call is made to the home. The staff can design a fitting memorial service or funeral, select a casket, write an obituary, provide an elegant hearse and more. Jim just wishes his job title reflected his duties. “I wish we were still called ‘undertakers’,” he says, underwhelmed by the modern-day title of director. “Undertaking is what we do. We undertake things for people so that they can focus on their families and what they need to while they’re grieving.” Much like a doctor, Jim has sacrificed much family time and many holidays to attend to his clients over his 40-plus years in the funeral business. “I can’t tell you how many times the phone would ring, just as I was taking the turkey out of the oven or just as the kids were about to open their presents from Santa. But in this situation, when someone needs you — you have to go. It’s just the way it is.” This sensitivity is one trait the 60-something looks for when hiring people to work at Wenban. “When I’m training young directors, I teach them that they aren’t to say anything, not even an ‘I’m sorry’ unless they really mean it,” Jim says. “But the truth is that this is something they already know.” Jim considers himself old school when it comes to the running of the funeral home. “I typically only hire men,” he says. “We have a number of people who die at home, and in this community, there are many old homes with narrow hallways and steep staircases. I need to have directors who can handle the heavy lifting.” Additionally, Jim allows his interns to live in the apartments above the funeral home. “This goes back some years and is an old funeral home tradition that the bodies are never left unattended,” he says. “Even at night, families can be reassured that their loved one isn’t here alone.” T rad it ion i s something that’s important to Jim — and something he wishes more would embrace. “The people who have the hardest time dealing with their grief are those who don’t fall back on tradition or try to make up their own ways to say good bye. Traditions are there for a reason — hundreds and thousands of years of experience prove this.” ■

■ by joanna brown As I prepared to host friends on Memorial Day, I was treated to a trek down memory lane. Rather than fire up the grill that weekend, I dipped into the pork haul I’d been freezing since my family bought half a pig from an Illinois farmer last fall. I thawed my five-pound fresh ham for days, brined it overnight, rubbed it with fresh herbs and roasted it for hours, basting it with orange juice and brown sugar every 45 minutes. It was fabulous. My partner in this endeavor was a heavy, stainless-steel All-Clad roasting pan that barely fits in my tiny 1980s oven. But every time I opened the creaky oven door with the missing knob, I was reminded of the gentleman who gifted it to me a decade ago. Ken Patchen, my colleague at a previous job, was a retired farmer and a veteran husband, among other accomplishments. He knew (far better than this young bride) how important a good roasting pan is for a solid holiday dinner. “It was a gift we had received that would

come out on Thanksgiving, Christmas, Guy Fawkes Day, and Easter at the least to roast the hams and birds required for the occasions,” he told me recently. “I remember lots of our gifts, and, here is the thing — I remember who gave them to us each time we use them. This is especially true for the kitchen equipment. “Jerry Idaszak and Geri Fheist gave us a cheese board and utensils for slicing and serving Wisconsin’s finest. Every time we bring out the cheese for guests, I always remember Jerry and Geri giving it to us and how nice it has been to have it all these 38 years.” I love my roasting pan, and I do, in fact, think of Ken and his lovely bride, Betty Ann, every time I use it. But Ken’s not the only reader who shared his opinions on wedding gifts. All offered great advice best kept in mind the next time you download a bridal registry. “My wedding shower happened 55 years ago in Chicago,” shared Jeanette Whisler. “Of all the gifts I received, the one I received from my apartment-mate has been used constantly all these years since. Nancy gave me a set of three nesting stainless-steel

They may not get the wow factor that crystal does at a bridal shower, but they are most celebrated in hindsight. Judy Zager concurred. “I have been married for 34 years,” Judy told me. “I did not have bridal showers, but I received a gift from someone who wanted to know they were thinking of us, even though they were not invited to the wedding.

“I had registered for moderately priced stainless — so affordable that I believe we received place settings for 30 by the time the wedding arrived. This person purchased some serving pieces to the stainless even though I did not register for them. Have stick (curved or webbed), will travel. And succeed. Senior middie Matt Solberg and the second-seeded Trevians trailed top-seeded Loyola Academy 8-6 with less than a minute left in the fourth quarter of the Illinois High School Lacrosse Association (IHSLA) state final at Hinsdale Central’s Dickinson Field on May 31. “When we were down 6-3 and 7-5, thoughts raced through my mind,” Solberg said after NT scored twice in the final 43 seconds of regulation and stunned two-time reigning state champion LA 9-8 in overtime to capture its 10th state title in program history. “One of my thoughts was,” he added, ‘Shoot, what’s going on?’ ” Two of Solberg’s shots found temporary sanctuary inside a cage, including the clincher. His first goal cut LA’s lead to 8-7 with 43 ticks left in regulation. “Matt Solberg said, from Day One, this is his team,” said Trevians coach Tom Herrala, whose club lost 9-6 to LA in last year’s state title game and fell 8-6 to the Ramblers on April 15. “So many times this season,” he added,

“Matt Solberg put this team on his back.” Back in March, at the United Center, Solberg left the Blackhawks’ home ice as the team’s season leader in points for state champion New Trier Green. “That was fun, sure, playing and winning state at the United Center,” Solberg said after joining his teammates and a thrilled throng of fans and friends for an on-field celebration. “But lacrosse has always been my favorite sport. Winning today was fun, too. What a great ride throughout the whole season. What a great effort from the whole squad today.” Trevians junior middie David Hammes, a triplet, came through with a singular effort late, whipping in a game-tying goal with 11 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. “We drew up a play, and I knew we had to be fast,” Hammes recounted. “I got the ball with about 15 seconds left. “Had to go to the cage,” he added. “Had to beat a guy.” NT (15-2 in IHSLA games) had to face a 3-0 deficit at the 4:47 mark of the first quarter. Ramblers Brian “Cal” Callahan, Mark Dowdle and Joe Uhland scored the goals; LA senior Jack Penn dished crisp assists from behind a cage on the first two tallies. “Loyola’s teams are always well-coached and disciplined,” Herrala said. “In seasons when I thought we were maybe a couple of goals better than Loyola or they were maybe two better than we were, that didn’t

matter in New Trier-Loyola games. What both teams thought was, ‘Throw stuff like that out,’ because it’s New Trier against Loyola.” Loyola (15-1 in IHSLA games) led 6-4 at that half and appeared to have secured a fairly comfortable lead when a Penn goal gave the Ramblers an 8-6 advantage at 2:35 of the fourth quarter. “Down 8-6, I was a little nervous,” Hammes admitted. “But we believe we have the best coaches, the best players and the best fans.” New Trier strength and conditioning coach Jim Davis addressed the Trevians in the school’s weight room before the state championship. Davis had left a conference at Northwestern University to deliver a motivational speech to a program aiming to win its eighth state title 10 years. “We’d been conditioned to win since the beginning of the season,” said Trevians junior middle Kevin Mulhern, who scored both of NT’s goals in the first period. “Hard work, never giving up … our team had the biggest heart, and it powered us through.” Hammes, like Solberg and Mulhern, finished with two goals. NT’s Tyler Kroll and Jack Hill fed an assist apiece. “Awesome, best win ever,” Herrala said. “I mean, all of our titles were great. But to win in overtime, against a team like Loyola … awesome. “Our players left it all on the field.” As the coach spoke, sticks and gloves belonging to New Trier’s players were scattered all over the field. It was the litter from the Trevians’ celebration. Sophomore attackman Patrick Flanagan paced LA’s offense with three goals. Senior middie Johnny Burns finished with a goal and an assist. Dowdle and senior middie Michael Neumeyer distributed the other two assists for Ramblers coach Rob Snyder’s squad. Notable: Loyola Academy’s Eric Genova was named Assistant Coach of the Year by the IHSLA. … Among the IHSLA all-staters who also earned US Lacrosse All-America status this spring were LA’s Callahan and Will Nowesnick, a senior defenseman, and NT’s Hill and Connelly. … NT defeated Benet Academy 10-6 in one state semifinal on May 29, while LA beat Lake Forest High School 10-8 in the other. … NT won seven straight state titles from 2005-11. … LA has won 10 state championships, with its first coming in 1990. The Ramblers won three state lax tournaments from 2002-04. ■

Unassuming Revenaugh thrilled to be a key contributor for sectional champion Scouts ■ by kevin reiterman

“They’re pretty scary.” With their season on the brink, the Lions battered numerous other shots Revenaugh’s way — but to no avail. “Ginnie is sure-handed, and she’s got a good feel for the game,” said Stuckslager. “Her strengths are communicating and organizing the defense.” And smiling.

sports@northshoreweekend.com It’s a good thing you don’t need a big ego to be a good goalkeeper. If that were the case, Lake Forest High School’s Ginnie Revenaugh would be in a heap of trouble. The senior, who wears the No. 1 jersey for the Scouts, was about as humble — and self-deprecating — as they come following her team’s 3-0 victory over St. Viator in the Class 2A Grayslake North Sectional final on May 30. “I don’t have the best technical skills,” admitted Revenaugh. And she doesn’t try to come up with a lot of “stop and watch me” plays. “If I dive for the ball, I might fall down,” she added, with a bright smile. The blonde-haired goalie, as likeable as she is modest, may not be caught up in her own self-importance, but she has been extremely vital to the Scouts’ latest fortunes. Revenaugh and the Scouts (16-6-1) also earned a shutout win over Prairie Ridge 2-0 in the sectional semifinal on May 28. Thus, heading into the Hoffman Estates Supersectional against Rockford Boylan on June 3, Revenaugh had a 4-for-4 thing going. Four playoff games, four shutouts. Not bad for a player who thought long and hard about not coming out for the team. “It’s spring. It’s my senior year in high school. I didn’t know if I wanted to put my time into a sport,” confessed Revenaugh. Enter LF head coach Ty Stuckslager, “It was Ty who told me it would be worth it to me,” Revenaugh said. “He reassured me that it would be fun. And it has been fun and pressure free.” Some tense moments not withstanding. In the sectional title game, it appeared St. Viator had jostled the net and scored a tying goal with 30:11 left in the first half. But the referees called off-sides and waved off the goal. “That freaked me out,” said Revenaugh. “The ball was in the box for a long time. It was just fumbling around. Out of control.”

Cornering the market: Should we call it The Paige Bourne Identity, Supremacy, Ultimatum or Legacy? How about The Bourne Weaponry? They all work. For Bourne, the corner kicks — from either sideline — have become her forte. “They’re my specialty,” Bourne said. “I’ve been taking them since I was really small (in club soccer).” And the LF sophomore has a magnificent sidekick in senior Lucy Edwards. “We’ve become a dynamic duo,” said Bourne. Edwards, a DePaul recruit who ended up as the No. 2 ranked player in the section, headed in a Bourne corner kick to give the Scouts a quick 1-0 lead against St. Viator. This same tandem also struck in the second half of the semifinal game against Prairie Ridge, breaking a scoreless tie with 20:14 left to play.

Advantage … LF defenders. According to Revenaugh, Lucy Edwards and Kendall Hoke helped to lure St. Viator off-sides with a bit of clever precision. “Our defense really played it smart,” said Revenaugh. “We stepped up (field) just a little, and they were caught off-sides.”

St. Viator’s other big chance to score came with just over 10 minutes gone in the second half, when Molly Murphy drilled an enticing shot from 27 yards out. It was an uh-oh moment for Revenaugh — until the ball sailed over the cross bar. “High ones like that,” said Revenaugh.

No, not the house.

Insuring the wins: It’s been a very productive postseason for LF’s Jenny McKendry. Seven days after netting a hat trick in the 6-0 regional title win over Antioch, the sophomore struck for two goals against St. Viator. Her first tally came off a long throw-in by the team’s throw-in queen, Kendall Hoke, and a kick-back assist from junior reserve Courtney Ardell. Her second goal, with 1:01 left on the clock, put the game out of reach. Meanwhile, in the semifinal game, junior defender Bailey Ehrens displayed some amazing skills to put LF ahead 2-0 with less than nine minutes left to play. She took possession at the 50-yard line, dribbled downfield, regained possession off a deflection and drilled in a 20-yard shot into the left corner of the goal. ■

Adams leaves his mark at state track meet

sports@northshoreweekend.com Connor Adams checked off a couple of boxes at the Class 3A state meet. Personal best mark? Check. State medal? Check. School record? Just missed. Phil Densdill’s leap of 22 feet, 11 inches in the long jump, which he set in 1966, still stands as the best long jump ever at Lake Forest High School. “Twenty-three feet was [Adams’] his goal,” said Lake Forest head coach John Brumund-Smith. But no worries. Adams accomplished much at the state meet in Charleston on May 30-31. On his second attempt in Friday’s long jump prelims, the Lake Forest senior sprung a personal best 22-7 ½ on the competition. “You could sort of tell (it was a good attempt),” Brumund-Smith said. “He hit it perfectly. “He was right on the board,” the coach added. “He had ¼ of an inch to spare — maybe.” That effort was more than enough to put Adams up with the big boys. He grabbed the fourth-place medal and shared the awards’ podium with eight others, including champion Jonathan Wells (23-0 ¾) of Grant High School. Adams, who had the 13th best sectional mark heading into the state meet, got hot at the right time. He won the Palatine Sectional with a mark of 22-4. His best effort prior to the state series was 21-9 ½ on April 19 at the Warren Invite.

Adams, who teamed up with Austin McIlvaine, Jack Blumeyer and Conner Hayes, also ran a terrific leg in the 4x100 relay at state. But a controversial DQ decision by the meet officials kept the Scouts out of the finals.

New Trier Up against it. New Trier’s 4x800 relay, which entered with the state’s fastest sectional time (7:43.65), ran great at the Class 3A state meet in Charleston on May 31. The senior foursome of Chase Silverman, Ted Oh, Connor Trapp and Peter Cotsirilos raced hard and fast to finish in a time of 7:44.27. And then, there was Neuqua Valley and Sandburg. They were … rocket fast. Sandburg? Everyone knew the Eagles were good. They were timed in 7:47.56 at the Romeoville Sectional. Neuqua Valley? Whoa. The Warriors arrived at Eastern Illinois University with the 12th best sectional time (7:55.03). But after reshuffling its lineup — adding two new runners — Neuqua Valley blasted to the finish line in 7:40.21. Sandburg took runner-up honors in 7:40.77. “Those 7:40s were pretty intense,” said Cotsirilos. “In the grand scheme of things, we’re pretty happy to finish as high (3rd place) as we did in this field.” Cotsirilos also returned home with a state medal in the 1600 meters. He ran a personal best and took eighth place (4:13.22). Silverman just missed a state medal, placing 10th in a highly respective time

(4:16.36). “My coach (David Wisner) said it was the deepest field he’d ever seen at state,” said Cotsirilos. Patrick Perrier of O’Fallon won the race in 4:10.34. Cotsirilos’ time would have been the second fastest time in the 2012 and 2013 championships. And it would have been the winning time in 2010 and 2011 meets.

HP head coach Kevin Caines marveled at Smoliak’s quick rise. “You’re looking at guy who has improved two feet in one year,” said Caines. “He’s become such a student of the event.”

Highland Park It was a win-win weekend for HP pole vaulter Eddie Smoliak. The junior not only vaulted into the state’s elite by earning a fifth-place medal (a personal best 14 feet, six inches) at the Class 3A state meet in Charleston on May 30-31; he also got to witness some greatness. In Saturday’s finals, Plainfield Central’s Luke “Skywalker” Winder soared to new heights. He cleared 17-3 to break the state record. Meanwhile, Smoliak’s next order of business will be trying to break the school records of David Berk, The 2011 graduate, who placed eighth in state, holds the indoor (14-7) and outdoor (15-0) records at the school. “I believe I’m capable,” said Smoliak. “I’ll keep training.” Smoliak has been upward and onward for the past month. He made 14-0 at the Lake County Meet and followed that up with a 14-3 at conference and 14-4 at the Loyola Sectional. “A lot of hard work has paid off,” Smoliak said. Advancing to the finals, as it turned out, was not a done deal. He rallied late

Deer Path Middle School Sprinters and distance runners led the way as the Deer Path Middle School eighthgrade girls track and field team claimed the Class AA Illinois Elementary School Association state title in East Peoria on Memorial Day weekend. The Lake Forest school tallied 49 points to finish 10 points better that Colin Powell Middle School in Matteson. A gold-medal performance was turned in by the school’s 4x400 relay team of Lauren Garriques, Anna Bazell, Emily Silge and Emma Milburn. They were clocked in 4:12.24. Deer Path’s 4x200 relay — Isabel Murphy, Bazell, Mary Gregg and Silge — ran a 1:50.41 to take runner-up honors. And there were plenty of top-notch individual performances. Milburn earned runner-up honors in the 800 meters (2:23.44), while she placed third in the 1600 (5:22.99). Garriques took second in the 1600 (5:30.93), while she added a sixth-place finish in the 800 (2:24.53). And Silge added to Deer Path’s point total by finishing third in the 200 meters (26.46). ■

Scouts finish with 23 wins Sparked by all-conference first-team selections Ryan Bradford and Jack Duffy and honorable mention Michael Christensen, the Lake Forest High School volleyball team capped off the season with 23 victories. After downing host Highland Park 25-18, 25-22 in the regional semifinals on May 27, LF was eliminated by Deerfield 25-19, 25-9 in the regional title game. Bradford had 20 assists and two blocks in the loss to the Warriors. Christensen had nine digs, while Andrew Salzer (7 kills) and John Preschlack (6 kills) led the attack. In the win over HP, Duffy led the team with five kills and six blocks. The other stat leaders included Salzer (6 kills), Christenson (10 digs), Martin Grum (2 kills, 3 blocks), Preschlack (3 kills, 4 digs) and Bradford (4 digs). Highland Park The Giants, who placed two players on the all-CSL North team in senior outside hitter Noah Gerber and junior middle blocker Ari Hoffman, were ousted from the postseason by Lake Forest 25-18, 25-22 on May 27. HP finished with a 10-20 record. “Noah carried us the whole season,” said first-year head coach Kyle Muldoon. “And tonight (against Lake Forest), I thought he had some of his best swings of the year.” Muldoon also praised the play of first-year player Toms Kirsblat. A native of Latvia, the 6-foot-8 senior is more known for his basketball. “He came into the season as a big unknown,” said Muldoon. “But he worked real hard. He committed himself to the team.” Loyola/New Trier A Sommer came up huge in the spring. New Trier’s Andrew Sommer popped for a season-high six blocks in the Trevians’ 25-19, 25-19 defeat of visiting Niles West in a sectional semifinal on May 30. Peter Hindsley struck for a team-high seven kills, while teammate Dante Chakravorti finished with 17 assists and two blocks in Winnetka. NT (31-7) was scheduled to face Loyola Academy (33-4) for a sectional title on June 3. LA edged Hersey 23-25, 25-22, 25-22 in the other New Trier Sectional semifinal on May 30, after getting 17 kills and four aces from Ramblers standout David Wieczorek in a 25-14, 25-19 defeat of Glenbrook South in the Niles North Regional final on May 28. Among NT’s other highlights in its sectional semifinal victory last week was Jack Serrino’s night (5 kills, 4 blocks). Henry Lindstrom pounded five kills to go with two blocks, and Brian Hammes contributed seven digs and an ace. ■

Trevians score a major win over Ramblers in soccer sectional championship ■ by bill mclean

sports@northshoreweekend.com It certainly looked like a soccer match at Maine South’s Wilson Field, but at times it sounded like a baseball game. “First and second!” a New Trier soccer player shouted from the Trevians’ bench several times during the second half of a Class 3A sectional championship on May 30. “We focus on winning each 50-50 ball [initially],” NT sophomore midfielder Celia Frei said. “But we know that controlling the ball right after that is also really important. “That’s why we yell, ‘First and second!’ as a reminder.” Top-seeded New Trier took advantage of three long balls — goals off set pieces, actually — in a 4-0 defeat of second-seeded Loyola Academy in sunny Park Ridge. The win avenged a 1-0 loss to LA in a sectional final last spring. “Restarts are important,” said Trevians sophomore midfielder Bina Saipi, who scored the match’s first goal off a restart in the third minute of the second half. “To be there … to be where you need to be after a restart, to get a goal, to then get momentum — all of that [requires] passion,” she added. “We had that today.” New Trier (28-1) was scheduled to face Barrington High School (18-3-1) for the Hersey Supersectional title in Arlington Heights on June 3. A throw-in by New Trier junior forward/ defender Jackie Welch led to Saipi’s goal at Maine South, with junior Maggie Armstrong delivering the assist. Armstrong struck for the second goal, shortly after gathering a lengthy free kick from Welch. “Many heroes today and no heroes today, because our team played well, played together,” NT coach Jim Burnside said. “We gave the girls a couple of concrete things to think about at the half. I usually talk for the entire time [10 minutes] at the half. “But not today. I had nothing else to say to the girls with about two and a half minutes

left.” Welch dished her second assist of the sectional final nearly four minutes after her first. Frei was the beneficiary this time. Frei later provided the assist on sophomore forward Kelly Maday’s goal at the 10:20 mark of the second half. “The heart of this team, the effort we gave today … everybody wanted to win so badly,” Welch said. New Trier sophomore goalkeeper Dani Kaufman pitched another shutout on a soccer pitch, keeping the Trevians’ goalsagainst total this spring at a dinky eight in 29 matches. Two of them were penalty kicks.

“Two other goals,” Burnside said, “came early in the season, when we had bad communication. Dani has been one of our program’s most solid keepers — and she’s only a sophomore. She’s intuitive, and she has superb hands. When she’s locked in, she’s great. “She doesn’t just turn shots away,” he added. “She also directs the defense in ways that limit the shots she has to face.” Kaufman and her reliable defenders in front of her faced a tall order in the sectional final. Loyola (22-3-1) boasts a highly athletic, talented lineup. Ramblers sophomore forward Devin Burns is a constant scoring threat, and senior midfielder/set piece

initiator Tori Iatarola has a knack for dictating pace in a variety of ways. Burns and Ramblers sophomore forward KK Phalen combined to create several promising scoring chances in each half. “New Trier outplayed us; New Trier deserved to win,” LA coach Craig Snower said. “Very good set-piece execution by [the Trevians].” Snower later lauded his seniors for helping the program capture its first two sectional championships. “It was a great class,” he said. One of New Trier’s top seniors, centermidfielder Molly Cahill, turned into an impromptu catcher along a sideline with four minutes remaining in the second half. But she did not catch a ball. An airborne, ecstatic Saipi fell into Cahill’s arms. Cahill secured her teammate, and a brief celebration ensued. “[New Trier’s non-seniors] played for the seniors today,” Welch said of the nine Class of 2014 Trevians, including dynamic forward Maddie Mulford. “We all look up to them and we all know how big the holes will be to fill next year.” Welch turned her attention to the Trevians’ next opponent. But she was unsure of the supersectional’s site. Then she shrugged. “We’re just going to show up and take it from there,” a smiling Welch said.

Ramblers, Trevians claim regional titles

Welcome back, Fran O’Malley. Welcome aboard, Thomas Smart. These two players count as welcome additions for the baseball team at Loyola Academy. O’Malley, a senior, is the cagey veteran. He is back in the lineup after missing more than a month and a half with a back injury. Smart, a sophomore, is the hot prospect. He’s been inserted in the middle of the batting order. Both players gave Loyola (12-20-1) a shot in the arm in the Class 4A Elk Grove Regional championship game on May 31, when the Ramblers, seeded No. 6 in their own sectional, erupted for eight runs in the sixth inning and added five more in the seventh to overwhelm No. 3 Elk Grove 16-2. Smart went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. “He (Smart) has been an absolute (hitting) machine,” said LA head coach Nick Bridich. O’Malley also had three hits. They were hardly a two-man band, however. This was a pure team victory for the Ramblers, who banged out 21 hits to make a winner out of junior left-hander Jack Yalowitz (7 IP, 7 Ks, 1 BB, 7 hits). The attack also featured Tommy Bordignon (4 hits, 2 runs), Jacob Frank (3 hits), Erik Olson (2 hits) and Travis Weber (2 hits). Yalowitz helped his own cause with two hits and two RBIs. “We’ve been playing a lot better the last couple of weeks,” said Bridich. The Ramblers advanced to the regional title game after beating Lane Tech 3-2 in eight innings on May 29. Olson came up with the game-winning hit. The team received solid pitching from starter Andrew Owen (7 2/3 innings) and reliever Yalowitz (15 pitches). LA was scheduled to host New Trier in a sectional semifinal game on June 5. The title game is set for June 7 at 11 a.m. New Trier First, the perfect game. And then … the encore. On May 28, in a Class 4A New Trier Regional semifinal game, New Trier senior right-hander Drew Fischer tossed his five-inning gem in a 14-0 win over Steinmetz. Three days later, in the regional title game, NT righthander Matt Cohen came relatively close to matching that effort. He went nine innings — 94 pitches — in a 1-0 victory over Niles West. The senior struck out seven and allowed only three hits and one walk. “Matt did a great job of pitching to contact,” said New Trier head coach Mike Napolean. “He was throwing three pitches for strikes.” Cohen also threw six shutout innings against Niles West during a regular-season game. “He’s got their number,” said Napolean. Cohen, who has a 1.17 earned run average, has been one of the team’s surprise performers this spring. “He went into the season as our No. 3 or No. 4,” Napolean said. “He’s made the most of his chances.” The Trevians (20-17), who were scheduled to play Loyola Academy in a sectional semifinal game on June 5, pushed across the winning run, when Sammy Visconti’s infield single brought in Nolan Stojentin. Logan Wible had two doubles for NT. Meanwhile, perfect games are a rarity at any level. “It’s a big deal,” said Napolean. “I don’t care who you’re playing.” Fischer was completely on his game. He had a three-ball count on only one hitter. “That’s impressive,” said Napolean. Fischer was helped out in the first inning, when Visconti

handled a tough chance at shortstop. It was smooth sailing after that. The offense was paced by Grant Klenovich (triple, 2 singles) and Matt McCaffrey (2 doubles). Highland Park Last year, the Giants finished the season 12-20. This year, they ended up 20-13. “It’s good to flip the script,” said second-year head coach Dan Casey. Win No. 21 was there for the taking. In the championship game of the Class 4A Libertyville Regional on May 31, the Giants dropped a 7-4 decision to the top-seeded hosts. A bang-bang play at first base, which went against the Giants in the top of the sixth inning, was telling. Hustling down the line, HP senior Oren Spungen, who made a diving catch in left field in the first inning to rob a Libertyville run, thought he had beaten the throw on the back-end of a double play. “That’s baseball,” said a disbelieving — and very speedy — Spungen, moments after the game. ”That’s life.” “That,” said Casey, “was the turning point of the game. “If he’s safe, the score is tied (5-5), and we have two of our best hitters (David Hochstadt and Matt Lowy) coming up. It was the play of the game.” In the fifth inning, Hochstadt burned Libertyville with a two-run double to left-center field. HP’s other major run-producer was leadoff hitter David Joseph. The senior shortstop reached base four times (single, double, 2 walks) and brought in two runs. He doubled home Justin Mills in the third inning, while he had a bases-loaded walk in the sixth. The Giants defeated Prospect 6-5 in nine innings in the regional semifinal on May 29. Lowy (2-for-4), who opened the ninth inning with a single, came home on a gift single — a misjudged popup in short left field — by Mills (2-for-5). Hochstadt sparked the offense with an RBI double in the first inning and a two-run double in the sixth inning. Spungen finished with two hits and three runs, while Joseph doubled and scored twice. Bradley Kaplan pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief of Liam Carter to earn the win. Carter finished the game with 15 strikeouts. Lake Forest The Scouts capped off the season with 24 wins. Win No. 25? It was well within reach. Lake Forest jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the Class 4A Stevenson Regional on May 31. But the Scouts were unable to tack on any runs and wound up losing to top-seeded Glenbrook South 5-3. “If you don’t build on your early lead, then you allow the other team to get back in it,” said LF head coach Ray Del Fava, noting that LF outhit the Titans 8-6. “We hit the ball well — but right at people.” JR Reimer and George Karkazis had two hits apiece for the Scouts (24-13). In the first inning, Reimer doubled home a run, while Karkazis had a two-run single. The Scouts moved into the title game after topping Lake Zurich 6-5 in the semifinal round on May 29. Juniors Cole Digman and Mateo Hargitt led the team offensively. Digman went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs, while Hargitt hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. He also was credited with an RBI on a bases-loaded walk. Charlie Sullivan picked up with the win in relief of Reimer, who worked six strong innings (3 Ks, 1 BB, 2 ER). Del Fava said he wasn’t surprised by his team’s 24 wins. “I thought we had the potential and capability to be pretty good,” he said. “We had two very good classes (senior and junior). And when you have that, you’re bound to have success.” ■

At last weekend’s boys state tennis tournament at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights, Polender — now a junior at Lake Forest High School — gave hungry tennis fans what they craved: superb, fearless shot making. A racket-less Russ Polender stood outside the courts as a proud spectator. He serves as the Director of Racquet Sports at Indian Hill Club in Winnetka. “My dad has always been a real positive tennis instructor,” said Brice. “He’s taught me a lot.” A 9-16 seed in singles, Polender was the talk of the tourney after drilling five foes in straight sets to earn a semifinal berth on May 31. The Scouts’ No. 2 singles player ended up third at state after Libertyville High School freshman and 5-8 seed Stefano Tsorotiotis retired with an injury after trailing 1-0 in the match for third place. “Brice has as mechanically sound of a tennis game as you’re going to see out here,” Scouts assistant coach Scot Gilbert said courtside on May 31. “His shots are heavy — hard and heavy. He’s locked in, very focused, really into tennis. “Brice,” he added, “will be a very good college tennis player.” Polender overwhelmed 5-8 seed Will Koehrsen of Metamora High School 6-3, 6-0 in a Round of 16 match on May 30 and later beat 3-4 seed Ben VanDixhorn of Libertyville 6-2, 6-4 in a state quarterfinal. VanDixhorn, a junior and Northwestern University recruit, had defeated Polender 7-5, 6-3 in a third-round match at state last spring. Polender’s only blemish last weekend was a 6-1, 6-3 semifinal loss to reigning state singles champion Martin Joyce of Hinsdale Central. “Joyce,” Polender said, “played rock-solid.” So did Lake Forest High School’s entire squad, which placed runner-up (41 points) to Hinsdale Central (56) and captured the program’s third straight state trophy. Scouts senior and second-seeded Peter Tarwid capped his fine prep career by topping Downers Grove South’s Tony Leto 6-3, 7-5 in the match for fifth place on May 31. Tarwid had finished sixth at each of the past two state meets. The Brown University recruit and fourtime state singles qualifier went an impressive 24-7 at state meets. LFHS seniors Scott Christian and Connor O’Kelly contributed 12 team points with their sixth-place showing in doubles. Last spring Christian paired up with John Zordani (LFHS, ’13) to take fifth at state in doubles. Reigning Warren Sectional doubles champions Greg Frauenheim and Jordon O’Kelly won four of six matches at state last weekend. “They all bought into the team concept,” Scouts coach Corky Leighton said after his club clinched the 11th state trophy in program history. “They cheered for each other all season. They gave each other tips. They bonded. “I loved it.” New Trier Team Makeshift — aka New Trier’s boys tennis team — made major waves at last weekend’s state meet, netting another state trophy with its third-place showing (34 points).

Senior and two-time state singles qualifier Alex Galoustian looked mighty comfortable in doubles matches with junior partner Corey Schwartz. The pair of lefties took third as a 5-8 seed. NT sophomore twins Scott and Tom Bickel, meanwhile, combined for nine wins in singles — a year after winning four doubles matches together at state. “I’m sure guys on the team think I’m a mad scientist when it comes to making our lineup,” Trevians coach Tad Eckert said. “But there’s method to my madness. A lot went into the equation before I picked our sectional lineup. Navigating our sectional … you need four bullets [the maximum four state-qualifying entrants] if you want to have any chance at getting a state trophy.” The NT tandem of junior Thomas Hanley/ sophomore Wyatt Mayer (4-2 at state) also advanced to state from the New Trier Sectional on May 24. Schwartz and the DePaul-bound Galoustian, nursing an ailing back, thumped fourth-seeded Jack Desse/Logan Ware of Edwardsville High School 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. The win was worth four points — double the value of other victories in the main draw. “That win put us in the position we needed to lock up a team trophy,” Eckert said before Galoustian/Schwartz beat Hinsdale Central’s Michael Czlonka/James Bruning 6-4, 6-2 in the match for third place. “It’s a great story, those two playing together. They came in so untested. But we knew they had a lot of potential.” As soon as he found out he’d get to battle with Galoustian in the postseason, Schwartz felt one emotion: happiness. “Because he’s a great player,” Schwartz said of Galoustian, a combined 10-4 in singles at the previous two state meets. Galoustian’s game is highly entertaining, particularly when he strikes his devastatingly effective topspin lob from the forehand side. The weapon typically freezes — and deflates — aggressive opponents at the net. “He’s such a great shot maker,” Eckert said. “I’m going to soak in the last match [for third place] Alex plays and enjoy every shot he makes.” Galoustian/Schwartz’s lone loss at state was a 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-1 semifinal decision to

top-seeded Lope Adelakun/Chase Hamilton of Hinsdale Central. “We played to our strengths in the first set,” said Galoustian, who plans to major in finance at DePaul. They set up in an odd formation for a couple of points near the end of their final match on May 31. As Schwartz served for the match against Hinsdale Central’s No. 2 team, Galoustian stood almost directly behind him. Their foes had no idea where Galoustian would position himself to await a service return. The clever tactic worked. New Trier’s state trophy was the program’s eighth in the last 11 seasons. Highland Park High School It was right there on the back of their team T-shirts, for all to see at last weekend’s state tennis tournament: A “67” in the middle of a red circle, with a red line back-slashing part of the number. The Giants finished 67th at last year’s state tournament. “That was not acceptable,” Giants coach Steve Rudman said. His 2014 crew performed significantly better — 60 spots better. Rudman’s reigning Central Suburban League North Meet and Highland Park Sectional champions finished seventh (23 points) at the three-day tourney. “We were hoping top five,” Rudman said. “But overall it was a great step from where we were as a team last year.” All four of the Giants’ state entrants earned seeds. Junior Max Gordon/sophomore David Aizenberg (5-8 seed) placed in the top 12 in doubles after winning five of seven matches, including a 7-6 (3), 6-4 defeat of Warren Sectional champions Greg Frauenheim/Jordon O’Kelly of Lake Forest High School in a back-draw match. “Great tournament, great season for them … for a doubles team that hadn’t played together before the season,” Rudman said. HP’s pair of singles state qualifiers — freshman Jacob Edelchik and sophomore Nick Zazove — bounced back after absorbing second-round losses. Edelchik won four straight in the back draw, while Zazove eliminated three netters in straight sets. “Nick drew a tough player in the second round [Plainfield South’s Austin Russell], a

player I thought should have been seeded,” Rudman said. HPHS junior Teddy Dunn and the state team’s lone senior, Eli Schneider, went 3-2 as the Giants’ other state doubles entrant. “I was really proud and pleased with how all of our guys played,” Rudman summed. “We won with class and lost with dignity.” ■

One day after moving to Highland Park in 2005, Laura and Steve Knapp were invited to the North Shore Yacht Club. It has become their perfect weekend spot scores of times since. “It’s a hidden gem right on the water,” notes Steve about the club in Highland Park, which opened nearly 80 years ago on Lake Michigan. “We don’t have to plan too much because it’s right here.”

After a breakfast at home during the weekend, Laura, Steve and their two children — Langston, 10, and seven-year-old Lachlan — head to the club off of Park Avenue. While the boys play on the beach, their parents will choose from one of the club’s fleet — often a Sunfish sailboat for Steve and a kayak for Laura — before heading out on the water. But if there’s no wind blowing? Then a family Frisbee game breaks out on the beach instead. After a long day on and at the water, the Knapps gather around the outdoor grills, where they cook steak and other fare to eat on the deck. As darkness falls, a bonfire is lit, and all can retire indoors to watch television and relax in the lounge room with other members if they choose. Says Laura, “It’s a beautiful place.
