Each square is a little house, and it has an address just like your house. That’s what Alice Holt tells her 4- and 5-year-olds who are beginning chess. “They learn how to identify each square with a letter and a number,” she noted. If the youngsters can say the alphabet from A to H and can count to eight, they’re ready to play chess, Holt said. She teaches chess for youngsters at the Gorton Community Center in Lake Forest on Saturday afternoons with U.S. Chess Federation Certified Coach Shiva Maharaj of Wilmette. Maharaj and Holt have given chess lessons together throughout the North Shore for 12 years. They believe they are teaching children more than just chess — they are teaching them the game of life. The number of chess classes and clubs for school-aged children is growing, according to the U.S. Chess Federation. Last year, a scholastic chess tournament attracted more than 5,300 kindergartners through high-school aged students from all over the United States, the largest ever held, according to the federation. Holt, who has played chess since she was 7 years old, said chess teaches children to take their time and consider options. “We teach the children to learn to look around the board and ask questions of themselves, what about this over here or that over there. They get an opportunity to compare their thoughts and ideas and come up with the best solution. And that serves your child for the rest of his or her life,” she said.

Holt said she shares that philosophy with Maharaj, whom she met at a chess tournament decades ago. They began teaching together in 2003, starting at schools including St. Mary’s in Lake Forest, Lake Forest County Day School, elementary schools in Wilmette and other Lake and Cook County schools. Students range from 2 years old to 90. They remind the kids it’s a game, they show them each piece, asking what it looks like and helping them understand how that piece moves on the board. What’s this? Holt says holding up one of the chess pieces. “That’s a horse. It looks like a horse and it’s the only one that can jump,” a child says. Within three lessons, the students already “understand the idea of controlling the center, bringing out their pieces, making their king safe. It’s so fun to see the light bulbs go on,” Holt said. But they do need to be taught to focus, said Maharaj. He said it may seem unbelievable that he can get a class of 20 kids ages 4 and 5 to sit completely still and quiet. But he can. “It’s an important beginning lesson for chess,” he said. “The first thing I emphasize is the ability to be focused and pay attention and not move. They want to wiggle around, but I pull a chair up to the front of the classroom and say, ‘Who can sit steady and focus and not move? Who can stay that way the longest?’ You would be surprised how they like to do that.” Children who learn to play chess acquire important analytical and deductive thinking

skills that can help them in future hightechnology jobs, Maharaj said. Some studies have shown that children who learn to play chess earn higher reading scores than their counterparts who do not. Holt said teachers at the schools where they offer chess instruction said they can tell which students are learning the game. Teachers say these children learn faster and focus better, Holt said.

Maharaj, known the world over for his chess skills as well as his teaching acumen, said his next goal is to run a match between a group of retired seniors just learning to play chess and the students he is teaching. “The seniors have a lot of values they can pass on to kids,” he said. Wheels are in motion for teen’s ride across the country ■ by angelika labno

At 16 years old, Lake Forest’s Lilly Bianchi is embarking on the trip of a lifetime. Equipped with a bike packed with survival essentials, Bianchi will ride from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean starting on Sunday.

“I’m looking forward to reaching the pier, and we’ll all run into the Pacific Ocean together as a group.” | Lilly Bianchi The teenager has always dreamed of completing what’s known as the American Challenge, a route from Charleston, S.C. to Santa Monica, Calif. run by Overland, an organization that offers adventure travels for fourth to 12th graders. Last summer, Bianchi biked from Seattle to San Francisco through Overland. It was on that trip that she learned of the accident that killed Merritt Levitan, an 18-year-old who was hit by a distracted driver while on the 2013 American Challenge. “I feel so connected to Merritt because she was doing something she loved, and it’s something that I love as well,” Bianchi said. Wanting to honor Levitan’s life and

passion for adventure, she decided to use her ride as a fundraiser for Merritt’s Way (www.ridingformerritt.weebly.com), which sponsors two programs: TextLess Live More (TLLM) and the Merritt Levitan Trinity Excellence in Education Program Scholarship (TEEP). Over six weeks beginning June 22, Bianchi will ride more than 3,000 miles (roughly 80 miles a day) through various terrains and geographical landmarks, including the Ozarks, the Great Plains, the Rockies and the Grand Canyon. There is even a day across a desert, which will be the single time a van will accompany the group. Riders camp outdoors in the portable tents they carry or otherwise sleep in churches or community centers. The trip concludes at the Santa Monica Pier. “I’m looking forward to reaching the pier, and we’ll all run into the Pacific Ocean together as a group,” Bianchi said. What does one pack for a long journey on the back of a bike? Bianchi’s special touring bike, which she lovingly calls “the station wagon of bikes,” can carry 50 pounds of luggage and still take on hills with ease. Along with her helmet, she plans to bring a sleeping bag, tent, clothes, sunscreen, extra bike parts “and lots of clean socks,” she laughs. She will try to waterproof everything and bring a raincoat. The incoming junior at Lake Forest High School has been preparing with hours-long biking trips four times a week around the North Shore bike paths, but mental preparation is perhaps the key to the journey’s success.

is telling you that you can’t do it — you have to fight that. This requires a lot of confidence in yourself, to get yourself up the hill or get yourself five more miles.” ■

Brill applies herself to makeup career ■ by jenna schubert

Many women cringe at the thought of having their makeup applied at department store counters in view of gawkers. Even in salons, privacy is limited. Clients of Elise Brill, a makeup artist for 24 years, find that the tranquility of her private makeup studio (adjoining her home in Northbrook) adds to a positive makeup experience.

“When a bride looks in the mirror after I do her makeup, I want to hear her say, ‘I’ve never felt so beautiful,’ but I also want her to feel like herself.” | Elise Brill “I want my clients to feel comfortable, so they can relax and feel at home,” Brill says. Aside from her private studio — which has the appearance of a high-end salon, minus all of the noise — Brill applies makeup for fashion, print, and television clients on site, as well as for many local women and men who want to look polished for public speaking events, business meetings, weddings, and more. The Glenview native’s interest in makeup and cosmetics was sparked after graduating from Columbia College in Chicago, where she studied film and photography. After college, Brill worked in casting for

the television and film industry and spent her free time observing the makeup artists as they worked on the actors. “I saw how people changed when they got their makeup done — they felt more polished and prettier,” Brill says. “When you feel good about yourself, it really makes a big difference.” After leaving the film industry, Brill began to explore the world of makeup even further, working as a sales associate at the Lancome counter of a department store. There, she started applying makeup and building up her clientele. She also began researching the cosmetic manufacturing process — which led to the production of her own cosmetic line, called Leesi B, 15 years ago. Today, between the online sales of her makeup and cosmetics (which she ships internationally), traveling to weddings and other events, Brill’s business is thriving. Her specialties, which include airbrush foundation application and faux eyelash application, are especially beneficial to brides — who comprise a large part of her clientele. Most brides have an initial trial, during which Brill asks questions to learn all the details of the wedding, including the bride’s style preferences. “When a bride looks in the mirror after I do her makeup, I want to hear her say, ‘I’ve never felt so beautiful,’ but I also want her to feel like herself,” Brill says. For Brill, the reward of her job goes beyond appearances; getting to know her clients during their happiest moments is what she truly enjoys. “For me, the relationships with my clients are ongoing. City Manager David Knapp informed the Highland Park City Council this month of his plan to retire in November, ending a career that spans more than 50 years of public service. “I have had a wonderful experience serving multiple communities. Central School teacher Kris Grant was honored as one of six recipients of the 2014 Kennedy Center/ Steven Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Award. Cinema expert is no new kid on the Block

Mimi Brody is the Pick-Laudati curator of film and director of Block Cinema at the Block Museum in Evanston. Reading: Currently I’m reading a book of essays written by Cahiers du Cinéma film critics — postwar American cinema written about by French film critics who later became famous directors. I also finished “An Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man.” I love reading early African-American travelogues; that’s an interest of mine. Listening: I’ve been listening to a lot of early jazz and also Bollywood film music. Jelly Roll Morton and a wonderful collection of Bollywood disaster movie soundtracks. I’ve been revisiting some of the music I loved in my college days, like Neutral Milk Hotel and early Pixies, and I’ve also discovered some great Thai music from the 1970s. Watching: In terms of film, a lot of early 1930s films for a film series we’re doing at the museum that’s a companion to our Left Front exhibition. I’ve been looking for left-leaning and socially conscious films of the 1930s. In terms of my favorite films, I loved a Chilean film called “Gloria” about a 50-something woman in Santiago who rejoins the dating world. It’s an amazing film full of drama and humor. There’s also a wonderful Israeli film called “Fill the Void.” It’s unusual in that it’s a film made by a woman from the Orthodox community in Israel. It felt like a Jane Austen novel set in the Orthodox community. Following: The best way for me to keep up on top of trends and what films are coming out is attending film festivals and conferences. I go to the annual Toronto Film Festival. It’s a great showcase for new films coming out in the fall, some of the best international film that have not been released. I also attend the Berlin

Film Festival in February — it’s particularly good for international films and world cinema. In June, I attend the annual film festival in Bologna, Italy [Cinema Rediscovered]. This festival showcases some of the best restored on 35-millimeter and digitally restored films. It’s an incredible selection of cinema from the past century, usually focused on a director, actor, or national cinema. This year it’s [the work of] William Wellman, early Japanese found films, and films of 1914. Activity: I’m responsible for a public film series that is usually Thursday and Friday evenings. I curate the film series, researching the films, writing about them, publishing our calendar, hosting events and film speakers. Occasionally I do this in conjunction with faculty or students, to present what they’re interested in. Most of the time we’re looking to bring the best contemporary and independent films in the art world. We also show quite a lot of classic Hollywood films, including silent films that may have live music performed along with the film. Eating: I live in Andersonville, and I love some guilty pleasures. Ba Le makes some of the best Vietnamese sandwiches I’ve ever had. My favorite is the tofu avocado banh mi. If I ever move away from Chicago, that’s what I’ll miss. Evanston’s got a lot of great restaurants as well. I love Olive Mountain — really fresh Middle Eastern food. What is your favorite mistake? In your first year of college you’re trying hard to impress people. You can have awkward moments as you try to do and say everything right. We were in a class and the topic of the Marquis de Sade came up, and I pronounced it like the pop singer’s name. It was crushingly humiliating at the time, but now it’s hilarious. I had a friend who threatened to name an alternative rock band after [my mispronunciation]. I wish she had! ■

Financial firm focuses on future of those with special needs ■ by joanna brown Glencoe resident Mike Walther was not yet 40 when he first considered one of life’s great questions, posed to him by his wife, Beverly. What would you do if you retired right now? Looking back, Walther said the answer came easily. His dream job was to simplify financial planning for families with specialneeds members. A certified financial planner and certified public accountant, Walther had long worked with well-off clients on plans to attain their retirement goals — but his passion lay in the work he conducted away from the office, with the National Association for Down Syndrome and with the Northern Suburban Special Recreation Foundation. A year after his wife’s question, Walther merged his professional expertise with his personal interest and opened the doors of Oak Wealth Advisors. The Deerfield firm provides financial advice and other support to families with special needs. Most of Walther’s clients have a child who has been diagnosed with a disability; others are caring for an ailing parent or a spouse after a catastrophic injury creates the need for full-time care. “There are challenges for both the older person who is losing the ability to care for himself or make sound decisions and the younger person who has indicated that they won’t ever develop these skills,” says Walther, whose firm manages more than $100 million. “The families all need someone to step in and navigate with them when they are overwhelmed by all the things they need to deal with.”

Consider this estimate: Autism Speaks puts the cost of caring for an autistic person over his or her lifetime at $2.3 million. Health insurance helps defray the expense, but families shoulder much of that burden, as the support available from government programs is constantly in flux. Walter compares himself to a pilot for the families. “Ninety percent of flights are not on course but 99 percent land safely,” he said. “People have retirement goals, and we can’t forget about your needs. Maybe your goal is for all your kids to go to college, or maybe it’s that you want your child with special needs to have safe housing and oversight and opportunities for employment. These are not mutually exclusive.” At her desk down the hall, Director of Special Needs Planning Randi Gillespie works with Walther’s clients to navigate everything except their financial needs. She connects families with social services, educational resources and other support programs. “I develop plans for families so that they feel they have a course for the lifespan of their family, not just for one child,” said Gillespie, a Northbrook mother of three. “There is no crystal ball for anyone, and the unexpected is very scary for people. But there are benefits for the child and support for the family, no matter what they want to do — if they want to go to Disney World or college or something else entirely.” It’s a resource she sought nine years ago when her middle child, Maddy, was born with Down syndrome. The first financial advisor Gillespie and her husband visited six months after Maddy’s arrival made their heads spin. They put their financial plans on

hold for several months out of frustration. In contrast, Walther points to his younger brother as an example of what good planning can accomplish. Sean Walther is autistic, and doctors suggested early on that he would never walk or talk. But the Walther family persevered, and at age 44 Sean is a high school graduate with a full-time job, an active social life with his peers, and a passion for golf. “What’s not to like about a life like that?” Walther says. “Poor planning leaves resources on the table.” Gillespie offered advice for families who feel

as overwhelmed as she did nine years ago. “You have to educate yourself and learn as early as you are able to,” she recommends. “When my daughter was born, I wanted to tell someone what was important to me, even if on any given day my answer was ‘I don’t know.’ And I wanted someone who could answer every question I had. “Find an advisor who is interested in something more than the money and pick someone who is like you, understands your dynamics and your special needs. I have three kids — not just one with Down syndrome.” ■

Steeling herself to battle melanoma — her own and others ■ by jenna schubert

For Susan Steel, founder of Skin of Steel, melanoma is not just a personal struggle. The Glenview resident — now entering her 10th year battling the disease — works closely with melanoma-impacted families in Lake County. Recently, Steel dealt with two fathers who lost their battles with melanoma and, between the two of them, left behind five children under the age of 10.

“You don’t survive this disease without full-on battle, and even with that, the odds are very stacked against you.” | Susan Steel “These two men were in their 30s and early 40s,” says Steel, whose not-for-profit organization raises public awareness of melanoma and provides funds for related research. “The age of people diagnosed with melanoma is dropping.” In fact, melanoma is the most common form of cancer for people ages 25 to 29, according to the American Melanoma Foundation. More disturbing still is Steel’s experience working with young pregnant mothers diagnosed with melanoma, whose babies develop melanoma in vitro. After receiving her own diagnosis in 2005 and being told she had a 15 percent chance of surviving the next five years,

Steel realized that Chicago was lacking in innovative melanoma clinical trials. So she embarked on years of traveling around the country for treatment. “It was driving me crazy that I had to keep getting on planes [to travel for clinical trials],” Steel says. “I could afford to do that, and I have the financial and personal resources to do that, but most people don’t have those. Is my life worth any more than theirs? No way! It’s crazy. We’re better than this.” Most shocking to Steel, in the years following her diagnosis, was that the Midwest had no melanoma tissue bank — which provides fresh frozen melanoma tissue for research purposes. As a result, Skin of Steel is working to build one in Chicago, which would function as part of a network (with additional branches in Pittsburgh, Portland, and San Francisco). With the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University as their partner, the team at Skin of Steel hopes to make its goal a reality as soon as possible. Skin of Steel is aiming to raise $3.3 million, which would cover the melanoma tissue bank’s first three years of operation. So far, approximately $750,000 has been donated ($100,000 of which was raised at Skin of Steel’s recent “Battle of the Bands: Rock Out Melanoma” fundraiser at Fields Volvo in Northfield). In the meantime, Steel and her board members will continue fighting against melanoma with any resource they can muster.

Landscape architect Craig Bergmann beautifies a North Shore estate ■ by thomas connors

photography by thomas harris for hedrich blessing The beauty of a garden is that it is always growing. The downside? A garden is always growing. Like a child whose shoes don’t fit from one spring to the next, a garden -— no matter how well planned — metamorphoses from season to season, year to year. And like that child who’s off to college before you know it, eventually, that garden will go its own way. “Just by virtue of plants growing and not being pruned, the proportions of a design can change,” notes landscape architect Craig Bergmann. When the owners of five-plus acres asked him to address their Highland Park property, his job — as he says — “was to embrace it and upgrade it.” The extensive garden retained much of its original layout, but its outlines had become blurred over the years. “We did a lot of cutting back, removing things, regaining views that had grown shut,” Bergmann says. An allee of linden trees whose canopy had gotten a bit bushy was given a trim, and a new flagstone walk was laid down between the trees.

“Areas that were intended to be manicured had become more like prairie,” says Bergmann. “But the native plants that had come in were doing well, and we treated them as welcome visitors to the garden.” Fashioned for privacy, the estate — with its Stanley Tigerman-designed residence -— is cocooned in a thicket of woods. Within, the landscape comprises a variety of distinctive “rooms.” A constellation that encourages feet to meander and eyes to wander. “The whole idea was for the owners to traverse the property and feel they were in a different area every time they turned a corner,” explains Bergmann. “So, with the pool they have a sort of California experience, they have Midwestern woodland, and a European style — with espaliered trees and flowers in abundance along the edge of pond.” Taking a cue from the mullions of the greenhouse-like pavilion that serves as an art studio, Bergmann referenced formal garden tradition by creating a space with diamond-shaped parterres punctuated by a mammoth iron gate the homeowners purchased from an antiques dealer in upstate New York. And he found a spot for the

couple’s prized Deborah Butterfield horse sculpture, setting it in a meadow-like clearing. “The piece is solid bronze, so we had to set in on a concrete support,” says Bergmann. “But we planted a rough, woodland grass around it and it looks quite natural — like it’s living in the garden.” In addition to manicuring the landscape and introducing new flora to the mix, Bergmann created a hardscape retreat, a sort of gallery for a collection of the home-owners’ large-scale sculpture. “The clients wanted a private, nestled-in-the-woods area,” explains Bergmann, “so we carved this out of thicket that was a sort of no-man’s land.” Paved with Wisconsin limestone and with sofas positioned on either side of a contemporary fire pit, the space forms a dramatic contrast to the trees that tower beyond, like Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s “forest primeval.” Bergmann is understated in his assessment of the garden he’s fostered, a masterpiece of color and light, scale and movement. He says simply, “We just needed to get a handle on it.” ■

The excerpt is from a poem titled “Real” by Elyssa Meyers. The young poet also wrote less optimistically — of inner struggles prompted by post-traumatic stress disorder, caused by being sexually assaulted when she was

initiative. The program also includes a DVD (the high school version features Meyers speaking) and a screening tool, which Meyers says has literally saved lives. “The schools need a team of social workers to go through the screening components so they can pull these kids right away

12. Bullying by peers provoked depression. When Elyssa, a sophomore at New Trier High School, committed suicide at age 16, her mother, Joanne, was devastated. Two years later, she launched a suicide prevention initiative — calling it Elyssa’s Mission. “The mission is to educate teens so that young lives can be saved,” says Meyers, a Northfield resident who has two other daughters, Nicole and Jaclyn. “That was my duty as a mother. It was never a question; I had to take action.” Founded in 2006, Elyssa’s Mission provides the resources for suicide prevention education in more than 50 middle and high schools around the state, and this year marks a first for the organization: the inaugural Chicago school, Baker College Prep. “My strength comes from the lack of education,” says Meyers, whose Sunday breakfast consists of fruits and berries at home with her husband, Alan. “This is a real problem among our kids and adults, and we have to act.” Suicide is the third-leading cause of death among 15-24 year olds nationwide, according to a 2010 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The warning signs for suicide can be as explicit as talking about wanting to die — but can also include reckless behavior, shifts in sleeping patterns, withdrawal from normal activities and extreme mood swings. Illinois was the fifth state to pass what’s known as the Jason Flatt Act in 2010, which mandates that school personnel be trained and taught suicide prevention and intervention techniques, particularly those who work with students in grades 7-12. Meanwhile, several years prior, Elyssa’s Mission worked tirelessly to persuade schools to use SOS Signs of Suicide, a prevention program designed by Screening for Mental Health in Massachusetts. “Schools were not comfortable taking this program on by themselves, so they would implement bits and pieces,” says Meyers. The solution was hiring a full-time director of education, Jodie Segal. From covering all funds to training staff and parents, Elyssa’s Mission — whose annual budget is $130,000 — is handson in the schools’ implementation of the

and get them into the office and talk about themselves. Two questions are linked to suicide, and the effects are immediate,” she notes, adding that an ambulance was once brought into one of the schools following a screening. Loyola Academy, a partner since the organization’s beginnings, introduces suicide prevention to sophomores and offers the SOS Booster program for seniors as part of its school-wide formation program, which entails biweekly meetings with counselors and groups of students. “Even though we feel like we know our students well, what we found out through the screening was that there were some students that identified with depression that were not coming forward,” says school counselor Debra Larrea. “We’ve now created a culture in the school where kids are looking out for one another. We’re giving them the language to have those conversations with their friends.” Deer Path Middle School in Lake Forest introduces the SOS program to its seventh graders during health class, which is taught by a health teacher and school social worker. “We really liked the ACT message — Acknowledge, Care and Tell — which helps students know what to do if they are worried about a friend who is depressed or feeling suicidal,” says Principal Renee Devore. “It is an evidence-based program, which means that it had research backing the effectiveness of the program.” Freedom floats above my head out of grasp, frustrated I give up. anyone who will be proposing soon. I’ll spare you the details of this eye-opening list but know that it argued against anything too public, too permanent, too technical, or too cheap. This eliminates proposals in malls and food courts, tattoos, anything sent via text message or e-card, and anything written on the inside of a pizza box in marker. The list also discouraged the use of food to hide the ring, as no one wants an x-ray of her diamond solitaire lodged in her abdomen to go viral. Rather than waste any more time reading about shameful proposals, I set out to compile a list of great ways to propose on the North Shore. The opportunities to create a really romantic setting locally are endless; imagine how many proposals have been made in the gazebo in Lake Bluff and on Wilmette’s Gillson Beach. I received several other suggestions from friends. One liked Evanston’s Shakespeare Garden, a Jens Jensen-designed space created in 1916 to mark the 300th anniversary of the bard’s death. Another liked Ravine Beach in Highland Park (technically its 6/16/14 AM Page 1 a 14-acre parcel of name 10:17 is Millard Park),

North Shore offers engaging ways to ask for one’s hand in marriage

ravine, bluff and shoreline managed by the Park District. Yet another friend recalled a couple that got engaged under the holiday lights in Highland Park’s Port Clinton Square. The Chicago Botanic Garden, I hear, averages 15-20 calls per week during the high season (March-December) from people who want to propose on the property. Connie Bolle, director of sales and special events, has seen a lot of creative ones, like the flash mob of people singing in front of the Japanese garden. The soon-to-be-groom was the last to join in the singing, before he got down on one knee. Another groom had his proposal engraved in a memorial brick at the Garden. I’ve no doubt that the couple will stop to admire the brick most every time they return to the site.

“But it’s usually just the couple in the garden, with maybe another person hidden off to the side to take pictures,” Bolle said. “The top of the waterfall garden is a popular place, as are the bridge to the Japanese garden and the esplanade at sunset with the fountain shooting in the background.” Once a nervous groom gets his answer, many couples retire to the Botanic Garden’s café for champagne or sangria with family waiting to celebrate. None of these ideas fit with the rules set out by that list I found online, but they all sound like lovely scenes to recall when the grandchildren ask. A live auction and paddle raise helped drum up funds for specific programs for the organization. Woodlands Academy alumna and Glencoe native Lisa Bonjour is the pastry chef at mk The Restaurant. How did you start working as a pastry chef? I was always interested in cooking. I didn’t think that cooking in a restaurant was what I wanted to do; I was originally interested in food writing. I graduated from a regular college and talked to some people who were working in the writing industry, and they told me I should work for free in a restaurant to see if I liked it, and it would give me a good background for my writing. I ended up enjoying working in a restaurant. Years cooking? Seven years. Best advice? The most important thing is organization. Signature dish? I specialize in plated, composed desserts as opposed to traditional bakery items. The point of that is everything is not one note or one flavor — I try to get different textures and temperatures and balance out sweet, salty, bitter, sour flavors on one plate so it’s more interesting. Like, bread pudding is really sweet, so I try to balance it with coffee ice cream, which is more bitter, and there’s a crunchy element, which is the pecan, and the cherries — they’re soaked in kirsch — and I put those in a little vinegar so they’re more acidic, so you get the acid/alcohol flavor to cut through some of the sweetness.

Favorite time to cook? Last year I had a lot of fun with the summer menu because there’s so many great fruits to use, and it’s fun to highlight local farmers. What do you like to eat at home? I try to go out when I’m not at work to see what other people are doing, and just to get a break from cooking and cleaning myself. Making a mess in the kitchen means you have to clean it up. Worthwhile gadget? I could not live without a stand mixer. Favorite cookbook? “Bouchon” by Thomas Keller and “Flour” by Joanne Chang. Both of those have really good recipes. Favorite fruit? I love blueberries and strawberries. How do you make a dessert menu? I come up with everything myself and then I taste it with my bosses before it goes on the menu. I just put on a strawberry dessert, and I’m working on a rhubarb dessert. We’ve got some time before anything else comes out of the ground. I don’t change the whole menu at once; I pick and choose — it’s time for this one to go, or we’re out of this fruit now, so we have to replace it. We usually have a break in July, so last year I changed the whole menu when I came back. mk The Restaurant is located at 868 N Franklin Street in Chicago. Recipe: Strawberry Rhubard Crisp For the filling, mix 6 ½ ounces chopped rhubarb; 6 ½ ounces chopped strawberries; 1.3 ounces sugar; 3 grams powdered apple pectin; zest of ½ lemon; zest of ½ orange; and ¾ teaspoon salt in a large bowl. Let sit for a few minutes to allow the fruit to macerate. Adjust the seasoning to your preference. For the topping, in a stand mixer, use the paddle attachment to mix together ½ cup oats; ½ cup flour; 1/3 cup light brown sugar; 2 ½ ounces cold butter; 1/3 teaspoon ginger powder; 2/3 teaspoon salt. It is done when it looks like loose cookie dough. Place the filling in a baking dish. Cover with the oatmeal topping. Bake at 350 degrees for about 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. You can serve immediately or use it later that day or the next.

Ways to reverse skin damage from sun — and to avoid it Restoring the North Shore for 75 Years

■ by joanna brown For healthy skin this summer, Highland Park plastic surgeon Steven Bloch tells patients to remember three things: drink plenty of water, wear sunblock and apply moisturizer frequently. But if these tips eluded patients in the past, he said, there are plenty of ways to reverse skin damage like sun spots and revive youthful skin.

“Sun damage is cumulative from birth, so it really starts to show after age 50.” | Dr. Steven Bloch “Sun damage is cumulative from birth, so it really starts to show after age 50,” Bloch explained. “That seems to be about the time when we look at ourselves in the mirror and say, ‘I’ve got to do something.’ ”The Skin Cancer Foundation reports that 90 percent of visible changes commonly attributed to aging are caused by the sun — and that daily use of sunblock by adults under age 55 can reduce skin aging. Women and men alike notice sunspots and other changes in their faces, chests and necks — but the hands, Bloch said, show hyperpigmentation that

“immediately puts you in a specific age category.” For patients over 50, Bloch often relies on Fraxel CO2 laser treatments to remove sunspots to even skin tones. He sought the treatment for his own skin before he brought it into his Highland Park and Glenview practices — and was impressed by the results. “I found that it’s one of a few skincare treatments that has a ‘wow’ effect,” Bloch said. “Within a week the skin exfoliates a significant part of the hyperpigmentation and also there is some tightening of the skin.” Younger people who notice sunspots may benefit from other, more targeted treatments, but Bloch said that if a patient notices one sunspot in his or her bathroom mirror, doctors will likely find other spots in the exam room. Microdermabrasion and micropeels are medical-grade exfoliators that keep skin healthy and radiant, he said. “These kinds of treatments can get rid of pre-cancerous spots and reverse a bit of the sun damage,” he said. “I consider them maintenance.” For patients who’ve sought these remedies, summer skincare routines become crucial to maintaining the results, Bloch said. “Avoid sunburn. Use a broad-spectrum sunblock with an SPF greater than 15. Wear hats. But there is no point to having perfect skin and a boring life. You don’t need to avoid the sun entirely.” ■

Highland Park Chameleons turn some heads during inaugural season

sports@northshoreweekend.com It usually started with an incredulous look, followed by a, “Wow…” David Kessler, a member of the Highland Park Chameleons ultimate (Frisbee) team, noticed the reaction and heard the praise a few times this spring. “After games, opponents came up to us and said they hadn’t expected us to be a good team,” says Kessler, senior at Highland Park High School. “It’s our first year as a team. “We heard it from players on teams that have been around for years.” HP stunned York High School 13-11 in April in only its second game. Kessler, a captain and hockey player in the winter,

thought his club might be in for a long day shortly after the game started. “Right away it was easy to tell how good York was, based on how well the team’s handlers [primary passers] played,” he recalls. “It was a great game, back and forth. “After we won, we all realized, ‘Hey, we’re pretty good.’ ” Kessler approached Highland Park High School’s administration last fall, seeking club sponsorship for a team that would number 14 seniors and three juniors. The attempt fell short. “But that was OK,” Kessler says. “We would have had to deal with ordering buses, medical waivers and other things involving paperwork.” The Chameleons are co-coached by Rick

Goldman and Greg Fisher, a pair of former ultimate players. Goldman’s son, Benji, flings and catches the disc for the team. He played for Highland Park High School’s hockey team in the winter. “The team’s athleticism was one of our strengths,” says Fisher, who hustled under Frisbees for a travel ultimate team 30 years ago in Chicago. “We had football players, hockey players, guys who had played lacrosse. The sport — it’s legit. Each player registered, and we played in two leagues [Chicago Ultimate Juniors Organization (CUJO) and Chicago Suburban Ultimate League-North]. “The sport is growing; there’s quite a buzz,” he adds. “I told the kids that almost every college has an ultimate team. Some

even have an ‘A’ and a ‘B’ team. And getting involved in ultimate is a great way to meet people.” Ultimate Frisbee enthusiasts like to utter the sport’s popular saying: “When a ball dreams, it dreams of being a Frisbee.” In other words, a ball is a ho-hum Cessna that wants to be a crowd-pleasing Blue Angel jet. “A Frisbee,” Fisher says, “can do things a ball can’t do. It can loop, hover, air bounce … all sorts of unusual things in the air.” The Frisbee used for ultimate games is actually a disc, made by Discraft. Highland Park: Six Giants were named to the Central Suburban North all-league team: Liam Carter, David Hochstadt, Bradley Kaplan, Matt Lowy, Justin Mills and Zach Nankin. Carter, a Missouri recruit, finished 4-1 with a 2.17 ERA. He gave up only 38 hits in 48.1 innings. His strikeout-to-walk ratio was 76 to 15. Hochstadt, who will play at William and Lee, batted .358 out of the No. 3 hole. He was a doubles machine: 14. He added four homers and three triples to finish with a team-best 34 RBIs. Kaplan, a right-hander, had a remarkable junior season. He had a 7-0 record with one save to go along with a 0.61 earned run average. Lowy, a senior right-fielder, shook off an early injury and wound up with a .356 batting average. Mills, a sophomore centerfielder, just missed hitting .400 in his rookie season. He ended up hitting .392 with 18 runs and 17 RBIs from the No. 9 spot in the batting order. Nankin batted .341 with seven doubles. He also did solid work on the mound: 4-4, 3.58 ERA.

Lake Forest: Three Scouts — senior JR Reimer and juniors Matt Gruenes and George Karkazis — made first-team allconference. Senior middle infielder Luke Johnson was honorable mention. Reimer, who will play at Northwestern, was one of the North Suburban Conference’s top players. He hit .425 with three home runs, 11 doubles, 36 RBIs and 28 runs. On the mound, the right-hander (4-6) came up with a 2.81 earned run average, allowing only 57 hits in 62.1 innings. Gruenes batted .426 with 30 runs scored, 24 runs batted in and 26 walks. His on-base percentage was .543. Karkazis hit .333 with 33 runs and 24 RBIs. The catcher had nine doubles and three home runs. Slowed by a back injury, Johnson appeared in 17 games and ended up hitting .383 with seven doubles.

New Trier: Three seniors — pitcher Matt Cohen, third baseman Matt McCaffrey and shortstop Sammy Visconti — earned all-conference honors for the Trevians. Cohen pitched a team-high 66 innings and finished 5-4 with a 0.96 earned run average. The right-hander, who will pitch at Adrian College, allowed only 47 hits. He also was credited with two saves. McCaffrey, one of the school’s top threesport athletes who plans to play two sports at Knox College (football and baseball), earned all-league recognition by hitting a team-high .353 with nine doubles, 18 RBIs and 22 runs. Visconti, who will play at Judson College, batted .327 with 22 runs and 17 RBIs.

Loyola: Senior Tommy Bordignon and junior Jack Yalowitz were selected to the all-conference team. Bordignon, a Northwestern recruit, led the Ramblers in hitting with a .434 batting average. He banged out 13 doubles and four triples and scored a team-best 35 runs. On the hill, the right-hander finished 2-2 with a 2.12 ERA. He recorded 36 Ks in 29.2 innings. Yalowitz also was a two-way standout. He worked a team-high 47.2 innings and finished with a 2.79 earned run average. At the plate, he hit .273 and was the team’s co-leader in RBIs (21).

Merk-ury rising

Loyola libero set to take game to the next level ■ by bill mclean

sports@northshoreweekend.com For Collin Merk and others, it was a field day — away from school. Merk, a libero for Loyola Academy’s volleyball team and recent graduate, headed to Hinkley Park in Park Ridge for a few sets of beach volleyball with buddies on a recent Saturday morning. A resident of the Edison Park neighborhood of Chicago, Merk later played tennis on a Hinkley Park court. “My favorite shot in tennis?” the 5-foot-10, 170-pounder asks. “One to the deep corners, just like one in volleyball.” Merk had enough energy to cap that active Saturday at Hinkley Park with a game of 16-inch softball under the lights. Three sports, one glorious day. “I felt it the next day; I was sore,” Merk recalls. “I hope to repeat a day like that a few more times this summer.” But Ramblers volleyball coach Lionel Ebeling won’t get to enjoy another spring volleyball season with the Quincy University-bound Merk in the fold. Merk amassed a team-high 290 digs, smacked 17 aces (to go with a .934 serve percentage) and served as a servereceive ace for a 33-5 sectional finalist in 2014. “Collin never took a play off and always worked hard when we played, always played aggressive volleyball, ” says LA outside hitter and 2014 graduate David Wieczorek, a Pepperdine recruit and first-team all-stater who ranks sixth all-time in career kills (1,263) in IHSA history. “He got better each year, and his volleyball knowledge … Collin has a lot of that, and it showed on the court,” he adds. Merk picked up the bulk of that knowledge when he shagged volleyballs for his mother, Anita, during adult practices and matches at North Avenue Beach and local park districts. Anita, who competed for the women’s volleyball team at the University of Central Florida, referees volleyball matches and continues to compete in women’s leagues. One of her teams has qualified for a national tournament. “Watching her play for so many years, that guided me, helped me a lot,” says Merk, whose sister, Hailey, played club volleyball for three years at the University of Illinois, and whose brother, rising sixth-grader Ryan, plays volleyball at home almost as often as boys his age breathe. “You could say,” Collin adds, “volleyball has been a big part of my family.” Merk, a D1 Chicago Volleyball Club member, earned second-team all-state honors after his final season at LA and joined Wieczorek as a participant at the Illinois

High School Volleyball Coaches Association All-Star Match at Brother Rice on June 9. “Beating good teams,” Merk says of what thrilled him the most on volleyball courts since he earned a promotion to LA’s varsity early in his sophomore season. “We defeated New Trier in our home [and 2014 season] opener. Our big rival, on our floor and with our fans supporting us — that was fun, that was the best.” A first-team all-Chicago Catholic League (Blue Division) pick this past spring, Merk took his responsibilities as libero seriously, comparing the position to that of a middle linebacker. “I made sure everybody knew what they had to know during serve-receive,” he says. “I enjoyed taking control of our defense and doing all I could to know the tendencies of our opponents. “Another one of my roles was to pick our guys up when they were down.” Merk nearly carried the Ramblers to a sectional final victory against Glenbrook South his junior season. The Titans ended up topping the Ramblers 25-19, 19-25, 25-18 at Niles West in 2013. The inspired efforts of Merk in that match impressed Wieczorek.

“Collin played so well,” Wieczorek recalls. “Yes, it was a loss, but we would not have even been in that match without him. His serve-receive was flawless, and so was his defense. He helped all of us that night. “Everybody,” he adds, “got to see how clutch of a player Collin is.” Wieczorek got to see Merk — the volleyball, tennis and softball player on that busy Saturday — because Wieczorek also pounded kills, ripped forehands and connected for extra-base hits at Hinkley Park. Wieczorek, like Merk, walked gingerly the next day. “That’s what you get when you go from sport to sport without stretching in between,” Wieczorek says. “But I hope he calls me and asks me to join him for another day like that. He’d have to call me if wants to do that, because I’m the one who usually drives him to the park. “Collin,” he adds, “may seem like a cut-to-the-point guy at first. But he’s talkative and friendly once you get to know him. He’s a great guy.” With a simple and healthy outlook on life. “Enjoy life,” Merk says. “Take it all in.” ■

handlers, while two are deployed as mids and two serve as longs. Mids are like midfielders in soccer and lacrosse; longs are essentially football wideouts without helmets and pads. It’s worth a point when a player comes down with a disc in an ultimate end zone. Referees aren’t necessary, because the players police themselves. “In football,” Kessler says, “if a quarterback overthrows a wide receiver by 30 yards, the play is over. In ultimate, if a disc is overthrown by 30 yards, a player usually still has a chance to run under it and catch it. “It’s a fast-paced sport,” he adds. “A lot of us played it because we were sad our other sports ended. I love the spirit and energy of ultimate. You’re always running and there’s always potential for cool plays.” The season ended May 31 at Naperville Central, site of the state tournament. The Chameleons’ inaugural season started on March 1. “We were nothing then,” recalls Fisher, whose club finished with a 12-12 record and placed seventh at the 16-team state tourney. “Now look at us. Our guys were rookies, raw players. New Trier’s Kvam overcomes tough odds, turns in splendid senior season ■ by bill mclean

sports@northshoreweekend.com The black brace New Trier lacrosse middie Betsey Kvam had to wear on her left knee for her senior season looked cumbersome and terribly restrictive. But, in a way, it also was liberating. “Knowing I might not be able to play [in college], I thought all season long, ‘Might as well go all out,’ ” says the 5-foot-8 Kvam (pronounced “Quam,” a Norwegian surname). “I pretended I wasn’t wearing it during games. “The brace,” she adds, “wasn’t as heavy as it looked.” Kvam had suffered a sprained left ACL with about three minutes left in a 2013 state semifinal loss against Montini Catholic. It meant missing the third-place game and sitting out all of last summer and part of the fall. The timing of the injury was unfortunate, since it would cut Kvam’s opportunities to make an impression as a college prospect before her final prep season. “Betsey took the injury in stride and handled the setback with grace,” New Trier coach Pete Collins says. “That had to be difficult for her, the injury occurring when it did. But she certainly showed her resilience this season.” Kvam, a Kenilworth resident, also displayed a knack for scoring after all those rehab sessions, pouring in 45 goals (second among teammates) to go with 13 assists for state runner-up NT (22-1-1). She earned US Lacrosse All-America honors (honorable mention) and joined teammates Charlotte McGuire, Julie Ball and Danni LeServe as all-state first-team picks. Kvam ranks in the top 10 in three career categories at New Trier: draw controls (99, No. 5), points (139, No. 9) and goals (97, No. 10). “Our team this year was amazing, the way we clicked, the way we competed,” says Kvam, who might try to make the women’s lacrosse team at Vanderbilt University as a walk-on. “Our thing was, ‘26 is 1’ — every

the team. I loved scoring goals, but I was just as happy after getting an assist. “The best feeling, though, was watching [LeServe] make a great save and the way we moved the ball after the save. When we scored following the save, it was like our play was a symphony on the field. I was thrilled when I was able to be a little part of the goal.” Kvam liked to drive from the top and shoot low, sometimes bouncing a shot in for a goal — the coolest kind of tally in the sport. gave her plenty of space to whip shots on goal. Four of her goals came in a 9-3 defeat of Hinsdale Central on April 15; HC’s Red Devils placed third at state this past spring and fourth last year. Kvam struck for a hat trick in six other games, including three straight games in a nine-day span in May. “She’s a competitor and a smart player,” Collins says. “Dependable and reliable and determined, too. Betsey put the team first and scored some big goals for us in big games. “She wasn’t our go-to player on offense,” he adds, “but she was a glue for us, a great

two-way midfielder and a strong, hard runner. The little things on offense and defense — she did all of those well.” Kvam played a variety of sports as a youngster before she started taking lacrosse seriously as a seventh-grader. She swam, played soccer at a high level and swung a tennis racket “here and there.” “After falling out of love with soccer, I found out about lacrosse, playing for Kenilworth teams and attending clinics,” Kvam says. “My mom [Shari] signed me up for the teams and clinics, and I worked on my game all the time. I’m so thankful my mom did that for me. “I loved lacrosse, and I never looked back.” At the beginning of her senior lax season, her relationship with that black knee brace never reached a lovey-dovey stage. The balky contraption moved around a lot when it wasn’t strapped on properly, and it took a while for Kvam to feel comfortable while dashing, stopping and dashing again. She also had to deal with shin splints. “It eventually was a non-issue, playing with the brace,” she says. “I felt pain after some practices, but everybody has an injury at some point of the season. “A lot of us used a lot of ice after practices and games.” Her plans this summer include babysitting for at least two families and serving as a volunteer at the Winnetka library. “I try to be friends with the kids I sit for, try to be fun-loving,” says Kvam. “It can be a good summer job, hanging out with little kids.” A New Trier girls lacrosse season without Kvam next spring? Collins, for one, is not looking forward to it. “I was so proud of her leadership this season,” he says. “She was not a rah-rah type for us, but she was a steady, reflective presence for us and valuable in a number of ways. She was passionate about the sport under her calm demeanor. Her personality … it’s fun at times, serious at times. It’s such a nice blend.” ■

Twins instrumental in Scouts’ historical soccer season

sports@northshoreweekend.com It happens after every soccer practice, after every soccer match. Lake Forest High School senior-to-be Carly Hoke asks her twin sister, Kendall, “How did I do?” when they’re together in a car and on their way home. Carly, a midfielder, demands the truth from Kendall, a 5-foot-9 defender who is a minute younger than her 5-7 sister. “I’m brutally honest with her, and she’s brutally honest with me,” says Kendall. “We like it that way.” There was a lot to like what the Hokes and the rest of the Scouts (19-6-1) did on June 7 at North Central College in Naperville. Lake Forest edged Normal Community West 2-1 on penalty kicks for the Class 2A state championship — a first in program history. Kendall got an assist in the title match, a day after Carly scored a goal in the Scouts’ 2-0 defeat of Chatham Glenwood’s Titans in a state semifinal. “It helps, being a twin and knowing my twin is also competitive and plays the sport I love,” says Carly, a University of Arkansas recruit and all-sectional pick in 2014. “We’re competitive as sisters, in a healthy way. We’ve played the same positions, so it’s good that we give each other feedback.” The twin daughters of Chicago Bears defensive backs coach Jon Hoke and nieces of University of Michigan football coach Brady Hoke, Carly and Kendall started to execute

sliding tackles on soccer pitches at a time when both were dance (ballet) students as grade-schoolers in Texas. Kendall danced until the fifth grade; Carly stuck it out for only two years in pointe shoes. “I hated dancing,” says Carly, chuckling. “I’d get ‘fake sick’ when I wanted to get out of dancing.” The Hoke family moved to Lake Forest before the twins entered the seventh grade, and Carly and Kendall have been tearing it up as genuine soccer standouts since then. Both are third-year FC United club players. “Carly,” Kendall says, “is relentless, constantly working when she plays, constantly looking to set up her teammates. She is extremely aggressive. “I have always admired how passionate she is about soccer.” Carly (nine goals, 10 assists in the ’14 season) used that zeal at a critical moment in the state title match, sliding fearlessly in heavy traffic to block a shot in front of Scouts goalkeeper Ginnie Revenaugh after a lengthy flip throw-in by Wildcats senior Tess Marcordes. Normal West had tied the match at 1-1 on a similar sequence only a few minutes earlier in the second half. “She got in the way of that shot like a hockey player in the NHL does,” says Scouts coach Ty Stuckslager. “Her willingness to take on any challenge with such desire … it’s always there. Carly likes to do whatever is necessary to make a play. “That play she made [in the final],” he adds, “sums up what Carly is all about.” Kendall, an all-North Suburban Conference honorable

mention selection, served as Lake Forest’s go-to for throwins, a skill she initially developed when the Hokes lived in Texas and Jon Hoke was the Houston Texans’ DBs coach. “My dad made me work a lot on the throws at home,” Kendall recalls. “I had to throw a soccer ball over a fence. When it went over the fence, it went down a hill. “Our dad, he’s into sports.” Kendall has yet to chuck a flip throw-in during a match, but she hints that she might look into adding that to her repertoire before the start of her senior season — especially after marveling at Marcordes’ acrobatic, crowd-pleasing throw-ins at state. “I’m determined to figure out how to do that,” Kendall says, half-smiling, half-serious. Carly appreciates what Kendall meant to the Scouts’ state championship team in between the throw-ins. Kendall played mostly center-back, with spot minutes at right wing and outside-mid for a team that won its last nine matches and outscored the opposition 33-3 during the streak. “Kendall is calm when she plays; she relaxes everyone,” says Carly, who saw time at defensive center-mid, attack center-mid, left wing, right wing, left back and, for one half in a match this past spring, served as the Scouts’ goalkeeper. “I also like how well Kendall crosses and her abilities to make simple passes, simple touches.” Kendall likes to spend hours at the beach, reading fiction, when a soccer match isn’t on a day’s “To Do” list. “I have to be doing something, no matter where I am,” Carly says. “If I’m at the beach or a pool, I’m swimming.” When LFHS earned corner kicks during its run to the state championship, team defenses were fretting, because a pair of 5-9 Scouts — Kendall Hoke and all-stater Lucy Edwards (LFHS, ’14) — often deployed themselves near a keeper. That’s a tall order … times two. With the Hoke sisters, Stuckslager says Kendall is “the quieter of the twins, the more introspective one.” Carly? “You can tell what Carly is feeling,” the coach says. “And she might even tell you how she’s feeling.”

june 28 Kendall is two inches taller than her twin, but Stuckslager doesn’t see it that way. “They both play like they’re 5-10,” he praises. It’s a little more than a week after the Class 2A girls soccer state championship. Carly and Kendall are sitting near each other, reflecting on the pinnacle of their careers thus far. One of the Scouts’ assistants had dispensed a valuable bit of advice to the team before the title match. “We were told, ‘Don’t play the occasion … ,’ ” Carly says. “ ‘ … play the game,’ ” Kendall adds. They smile at each other. Give Kendall the goal and Carly the assist. ■

Highland Park: Senior Samantha Schwartz, who will play at Brandeis University, earned all-sectional and all-conference honors. She finished the season with 21 goals and four assists. Lucy Hoffman, Lily Pickus and Nikki Shiner also earned all-CSL North recognition. Pickus had four goals and six assists, while Shiner had four goals and three assists for the 10-8-1 Giants. Lake Forest: The Class 2A state champs gathered a number of postseason accolades. Senior Lucy Edwards (12 goals, 3 assists) earned allstate honors, while Carly Hoke (9 goals, 10 assists) and Sydney Johnston (5 goals, 1 assist) made all-sectional. The other all-conference selections included Paige Bourne (4 goals, 16 assists), Bailey Ehrens (1 goal, 4 assists) and Adrian Walker (2 goals, 5 assists). Sheridan Bufe and Kendall Hoke were honorable mention all-conference. Loyola: Senior midfielder Tori Iatarola, who finished the season with 12 goals and 30 assists, earned All-America honors, while sophomore forward Devin Burns (21 goals, 7 assists) and senior goalkeeper Lauren Smith (22-3-1, 19 shutouts, 10 goals against) were named to the allstate team. Senior midfielder Lia Baldo (11 goals, 5 assists) made all-sectional, while the other all-conference selections were sophomores Alex Yasko and Shannon Powers and senior Elle Zadina.

New Trier: Senior Maddie Mulford finished the campaign with 25 goals and 11 assists to earn All-America honors for the Class 3A state champs. Showcase: The Northwest Suburban Baseball Tournament, a two-day showcase event, will be held at St. Charles North High School on June 20-21. Participants include Highland Park’s Bradley Kaplan, Liam McCann and Dan Wagner; Lake Forest’s Bryan Bund, Matt Gruenes, George Karkazis, Cal Kropke and Mark Turelli; and New Trier’s Andrew Earvolino and Scott Hammes.

Lake Forest: Junior Sarah Porter was the lone all-conference player for the Scouts. The shortstop/pitcher hit .365 with 23 hits and 24 runs. Her on-base percentage was .512. Loyola: A senior — Jamie Kiefer — and two freshmen — Darice Wheeler and Avery Yalowitz — claimed all-conference honors for the 12-13 Ramblers. Wheeler, a first baseman, belted eight home runs and finished with a .525 batting average. Yalowitz hit .296 with two homers. Kiefer, who will pitch at Olivet Nazarene, finished the spring with 135 strikeouts. New Trier: Seven Trevians earned all-CSL South honors: Lauren Bagan, Abbey Boyd, Amanda Howell, Megan Neuhaus, Lily Novak, Lauren Secaras and Allison Quigley. Northwestern-bound Boyd, who made Academic All-State, led the team in batting average (.415), slugging percentage (.694), hits (49), runs (46), doubles (17), triples (5) and stolen bases (12). The team’s other .400 hitter was Bagan (.403), while Secaras was the top power hitter with nine homers and 37 RBIs to go along with a .361 batting average. On the mound, Secaras went 11-2 with a 2.89 ERA. Howell was another major run producer, hitting .382 with 33 RBIs. She had 10 doubles and five homers. Novak just missed hitting .400, finishing the season at .397 with 12 extra base hits and 24 RBIs. Neuhaus, who is heading to Wheaton College, batted .305 with 26 runs and 10 stolen bases. Quigley, who will pitch at Middlebury, closed out her prep career with great numbers. She hit .358 with 23 runs batted in. On the mound, she finished 18-3

Lake Forest Scouts: The 12U Gold squad took runner-up honors to Park Ridge in the championship game of the Vernon Hills Spring Tournament during the Memorial Day weekend. After finishing 2-1 in pool play and knocking off Arlington Heights 11-3 in the semifinals, the Scouts dropped a 15-3 decision to No. 1 seeded Park Ridge. The roster includes Gabriel Haubner, Carter Mitchell, Scott Skinner, Lino Caputo, Jack Graham, Michael Raupp, Lucas Redding, Charlie Marks, Andrew Crawford and Luke Gerskovich. The team is coached by Brad DeJong and Thomas Durrett.

New York Rangers: New Trier grad John Moore was a valuable member of the Rangers, who fell to the Los Angeles Kings in the Stanley Cup final. The 23-year-old defenseman, who wore No. 17, played 20-plus minutes in his team’s 3-2 overtime loss in Game Five. Moore, who was a first-round draft pick (21st overall) by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2009, played in 21 playoff games and was credited with two assists. He appeared in 74 games during the regular season, finishing with four goals and 11 assists.

Last year, Tom Ford and Katie Ford traveled to London to attend Wimbledon in hopes of watching Roger Federer play. But Federer — a seven-time champion —was toppled by a 116th-ranked player on the tournament’s third day before the Fords had arrived. “I said, ‘Let’s go to the French Open next year,’ “ says Tom, undeterred in his pursuit to watch the Grand Slam master in person. In May, along with two other local couples who are great friends, they flew to Paris — where they had gotten engaged in 1999 — and surprisingly found themselves on a tennis court the first day. At a park in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, the French Open had installed a red-clay court for tennis aficionados. “They gave us shoes and a racquet — people clapped after points,” Tom recalls. “It was pretty surreal for a bunch of hackers.” Each day, they took the Metra to Le Stade Roland Garros — which features three main courts with seating for thousands of fans to watch the big-name players, along with more than a dozen side courts for the lesser-knowns — and walked the five miles back. They loved the side courts, where they could watch players up close and even catch a wayward ball. “It was so much fun. You’re in Paris, it’s a sporting event, and there’s great food,” says Katie. In their spare time, they sought out the bridge under which Tom had asked Katie to marry him. Unsure which one it was initially, they found it before the trip ended. And Federer? “The red clay is beautiful. The points are long. And we saw Federer,” Tom notes. “Now that that’s been checked off, if we go again I wouldn’t even get a stadium ticket.
