ost Americans are little acquainted with polo. Knowing that Julia Roberts stomped divots in “Pretty Woman” is akin to being a Rhodes scholar in the sport. North Shore residents are fortunate that fields are close by. In Lake Bluff, the Villa Del Lago Equestrian Connection Polo Charity Cup 2014 drew hundreds this past Saturday at the immaculate grounds by Crab Tree Farm. And in Oak Brook, polo is a sport without parallel. The season is poised to commence again on July 6 at the 82-year-old polo grounds there. Given that those fields, the nationally known golf club nearby and the town itself was created by the Butler family, it made sense to catch up with Michael Butler, now 87 and living in the Los Angeles area. Before he gave up the game in his 60s, Butler played with Cecil Smith — considered the best polo player ever — and many other stalwarts, such as Prince Charles. It’s not all glamour. Butler has witnessed three people killed on the polo fields. “It’s the most dangerous sport I know of,” he acknowledges. “But it’s also exciting. “A lot of people don’t think the riding is important — it’s the most important thing.”

Right on Lake Bluff southpaw Falbe thrilled to be connected to polo

Samantha Falbe is ready to begin the season July 6 at the Oak Brook Polo Club. photography

■ by bill mclean Samantha Falbe figured she would learn to ride horses and the fundamentals of polo at the same time when she signed up for lessons at the Naperville Polo Club nearly 13 years ago. But the Lake Bluff resident — a left-hander — found out in a hurry that she would have to undergo another daunting challenge: learn to swing a polo mallet right-handed. And only right-handed. “That’s a safety-related rule,” says Falbe, 38. “You don’t want mallets swinging from both sides of the horses during a match. Trained and conditioned polo ponies have to grow accustomed to things — many other things — in competitions, from seeing a ball move near their heads to running constantly next to other horses.” Polo has been Falbe’s full-fledged passion for more than a decade. The mother of two boys (Austin, 5, and Blake, 17 months) and co-owner (with husband Scott) of Intelligence Lighting Creations in Arlington Heights, Falbe has battled atop four-legged teammates at international tournaments in Argentina, Florida and Texas as a registered member of the Chicago International Polo Club. “It’s great exercise and a fantastic hobby,” says Falbe, who grew up in Glenview and graduated from Maine East High School in Park Ridge, before earning her bachelor of fine arts degree in lighting design from DePaul University. “You’re conditioning horses as athletes, while conditioning yourself, and it’s a never-ending learning process for me. “Another one of my early polo challenges was gaining confidence to be on a field with a bunch of experienced players I did not know.” She’ll spend significant chunks of her time this summer on the immaculately manicured fields at the Oak Brook Polo Club. The season starts with “Hat Day” on July 6 and concludes with “Argentina Day” on Sept. 14, when spectators will get to enjoy music and dance performances between the match’s six chukkers (polo periods, each lasting seven and a half minutes). Most polo fields measure 300 yards long by 160 yards wide — or Soldier Field’s football field times three. Players typically mount at least six horses each match.

by joel lerner

Polo ponies perform best in shifts. “Horses are 75-80 percent of the game,” says the 5-foot-5 Falbe, who struck hard plastic balls in matches last summer at the Barrington Hills Polo Club. “If you have a good horse, the horse does a lot of the work for you; many of the horses have race-track backgrounds. The best horses know the game of polo better than humans do. Amazing … they’re amazing.” One of Falbe’s two-legged mentors is Claudio Gauna, a native of Argentina who works at the Stone Bank Polo Club in Oconomowoc, Wis. He worked with Falbe at the Naperville Polo Club when Falbe was a southpaw entering a world of righties. “Sammy did most of the work,” Gauna says. “Her ability to control a horse, that’s one of her strengths. She makes an effort to learn every detail about horses, about the game. Her thing is, ‘Practice, practice, practice.’ She’s a perfectionist. “Only a handful of people,” he adds, “can do what she can do, and that is adjust very well from horse to horse after differentiating each horse.” Polo played at the high-goal (elite) level is graceful, fast and peaceful, a sport Prince Charles played competitively until the early 1990s. William and Harry followed in their father’s equestrian boots. But it’s also a dangerous activity at times. The Prince of Wales suffered a broken arm while playing the “sport of kings” in 1990 and became unconscious for a spell after a fall in a charity polo match 11 years later. “Fear … I don’t experience that during matches because I always have so much fun playing polo,” Falbe says. “I’m all about the thrills, all about the challenges. I love hitting the ball to a teammate and being in the right place at the right time to receive the ball from a teammate. Moments like those on a field excite me. “I plan to participate in polo for as long as possible, maybe all the way into my 70s and 80s.” People of all ages benefit from the presence of horses. Ask anyone affiliated with the Equestrian Connection in Lake Forest, an organization committed to helping people with special needs by connecting them with horses and one another. “It’s a wonderful group of people,” says Falbe, an Equestrian Connection volunteer who participated in the

5th Annual Villa Del Lago-Equestrian Connection Polo Cup at Crabtree Farm in Lake Bluff on June 21. “The experiences there are therapeutic; they help children and adults build strength and confidence,” she adds. “A horse sometimes is the connection they need to enhance their lives in a number of ways.” ■

Author takes the stage with entrepreneurship book ■ by katie rose mceneely Dan Weinfurter is the author of Second Stage Entrepreneurship. Reading: I am reading a biography of T. E. Lawrence, otherwise known as Lawrence of Arabia. It came out late last year. A very, very good book on how the beginnings of the troubles in the Middle East during World War II. Right before that I finished a book by Jim Harrison, who writes about life in the middle part of the country. Listening: I like all types of music. I’m not a fan of rap or R&B, but I like singersongwriter, blues, rock ‘n roll. I like Sarah Barielles and Bruce Springsteen. It runs the gamut. Roseanne Cash has something new out that I liked quite a bit. Watching: I like the Green Bay Packers and I like “House of Lies,” which is on Showtime. It’s about a fictitious consulting firm. I don’t know how you’d describe it. It’s meant as sarcasm more that it’s meant to be taken seriously. Following: The whole climate change thing is very interesting to me. It’s a complicated subject that defies easy answers, but it has enormous implications for people worldwide. Thomas Friedman made the argument that biggest obstacle to world peace is water. I’d argue there’s something fundamental going on, and it will be one of the defining issues during what’s left of my life. I think it’s going to be a macro issue. Related to that, of course, is energy dependence and oil consumption. Activity: My book is about taking the

business owner to the second stage — proof of concept. It’s about creating a team that delivers on the owner’s vision. It’s a big part of U.S. economy, and the book is a way to get back and it’s also a vehicle to support my consulting business, Chicago Growth Consultants, LLC., which is really about sales effectiveness and driving profitable growth. I started the book four years ago and got really swamped and put it aside. I began the work in earnest in the middle of 2012 and finished the first draft of the manuscript on Feb. 1, 2013. It went through several iterations and the manuscript was published in October 2013. As far as the North Shore: I lived in Riverwoods, Winnetka and Kenilworth for a number of years, but when my youngest daughter graduated from New Trier, we moved to the city. I’m still in Winnetka all the time — you live there that long and you end up with a network of friends all from the same neighborhood. Eating: I saw a nutritionist at the beginning of the year, so I’ve been trying to eat better than I have — gluten, alcohol, citrus juice and caffeine have essentially been removed from my diet. It…may not be permanent. What is your favorite mistake? I had a board member tell me once that the first fall down a flight of stairs is a given, the second fall is annoying, and the third really, really bothers me. In the intermediate to long run, the only sustainable competitive advantage is who you have

Dan Weinfurter

working for you. There have been more than a few times where I haven’t done that. In general, if you hire quickly, it’s not a great outcome. Sometimes you get lucky, but that’s one I take to the brain to say,

“try not to do that again.” The other one is, a board member once told me, “Dan, you only listen to board advice you agree with.” I don’t think it was a compliment, but I think he might have been right in any case. ■

David & Diane find fun close to home When it comes to getting away, Diane and David Golin of Highland Park prefer to stay local. A favorite place to start is breakfast at the Chicago Botanic Garden, followed by a stroll around its lush landscapes. A visit to Ryerson Woods — a place they’ve taken their three daughters since they were tiny — always bring smiles.

“We sat outside on one of the first evenings it was nice out. You feel like you’re on vacation.” Then they’ll head to the city and catch a play at either the Goodman Theatre or the Steppenwolf Theatre. Recently, for dinner, they stopped at the French restaurant Nellcote on West Randolph Street, a hot spot for Chicago dining. “We sat outside on one of the first evenings it was nice out,” Diane says. “You feel like you’re on vacation.” On Sunday, they enjoy going to brunch downtown with two of their daughters, Dana and Alison, who both live in Chicago. Occasionally, their other daughter Emily — who will be a senior at the University of Illinois this fall — will drive up as well. Whether Diane and David conclude their great weekend after the brunch bill is paid at the Bongo Room or any other spot they can find “that’s a little different” is up to the girls. “Sometimes we walk around the lakefront afterwards,” notes Diane. “It all depends on how much time they want to give us.” ■

“THESE ARE THE PEOPLE THAT CAN HELP YOU.” “I’ve had air conditioning catastrophes. Ravinia has been right there for me. These are the people that can help you” ~ Glenview customer

by Jean Wright, President/Broker Owner Crs, GrI

TeChnO Luxury The homebuyer of today is definitely concerned with keeping up—not with the Joneses, perhaps, but with the ever-changing face of technology. A fully appointed den or media room used to be an important selling point in a home—today, these things are de rigueur, standard in nearly every home on the market. In order to increase the market appeal of your home and be competitive with other homes of comparable structure, size and amenities for sale in your area, the new key selling point of a property is the home office. Once a rarity, the home office has evolved into the home’s hub and center of operation and activity, often controlling every technological amenity of the house from one room. Modern home automation systems link lighting, heating and air conditioning systems, as well as audio-visual equipment, security systems and the scheduling of television, recording systems, stereo equipment and lighting fixtures. The modern home office isn’t just for business professionals, technological connoisseurs, or the higher-earning set, either. Today’s home technology features are high-end home amenities that are available across a wide range of budgets, turning an average home into an above-average home when it hits the market, giving tech-savvy dwellings a competitive market edge. Take a look at your home’s wiring, routing and see what simple upgrades you could implement that would simplify your day-to-day living while you’re in the home, and that could add top-dollar value to your home when it comes time to put it on the market. Ask yourself: Is your home techno-ready?

18th Annual Myra Rubenstein Weis Health Resource Center Luncheon

6/28– 6/29/14

EILEEN & DR. PAUL GOLDSTEIN

photography by larry miller

Johnson Ho — a North Shore entrepreneur whose wine articles have appeared in Decanter Magazine of London and beyond — selects the best bottles of Rose to buy this week. Some 40 years ago, the favorite courting and entertainment wine of choice were Roses from Portugal in distinctive packages: the inexpensive Mateus in a squatty flagon and the more upscale Lancers in a faux-clay bottle, a favorite candle-holder souvenir of the era. Their popularity has been waning as more edgy new brands have emerged on one side and a new genre of sophisticated producers are elevating the quality discernibly on the other.

Saturday dinner

A sold-out crowd of more than 320 supporters flooded Highland Park Country Club during the 18th Annual Myra Rubenstein Weis Health Resource Center Luncheon in May, raising more than $75,000 for the Living in the Future (LIFE) Cancer Survivorship Program at NorthShore. Co-chaired by Linda Clark, Sheri Kase, Ruthie Greensphan, and Sue Masaracchia-Roberts, the luncheon was entitled “Memory Matters”, and was kicked-off with a cocktail reception and silent auction. Guests were then seated for a healthy lunch and inspiring program. Bruce Brockstein, Medical Director of the Kellogg Cancer Centers at NorthShore University HealthSystem (NorthShore) was honored for his achievement in the field of oncology. The keynote address was delivered by James Mastrianni, Director of The Center for Comprehensive Care & Research on Memory Disorders at the University of Chicago, who highlighted the latest research on memory disorders, and shared insight on ways to keep the mind young. northshore.org/mrw

JESSE PETERSON HALL, DR. GARY PINELESS

2013 La Crema Pinot Noir Rose, Russian River Valley, Sonoma, California; suggested retail price: $29

A top-secret project of the winemaker for his own summer enjoyment originally, his friends and family were so thrilled by his sumptuous interpretation of California›s bounty of opulence that it grew into a mini-release for those in the know. This micro-production Rose shows a lot more unbridled ripe strawberry, cherry and nectarine aromas than typically found. Fantastic with hearty salads, cold cuts, pasta or chef salads, oriental dishes, grilled sausages or pork dishes.

Midweek Meal 2012 Caves d’Esclans Whispering Angel, Cotes de Provence, France; suggested retail price: $27 A wildly popular choice in the Hamptons, Palm Beach, Monaco and on mega-yachts, this elegant interpretation eschews typical flashy fruit expressions or oak influence that would detract from its mission of elegant palate refreshment at light luncheons or twilight grazing at sophisticated garden parties. Fabulous with mild shellfish, poultry or white asparagus dishes. Best Value 2013 Jean-Luc Colombo Cape Bleue Rose, Provence, France; suggested retail price: $16 Long famous for his pioneering work in organic vineyard management in the Rhone Valley to the north, Monsieur Colombo found a patch of old vineyard sites with great quality potential near the Mediterranean coast. This Syrah blend Rose abounds with a crisp, clean flavor reminiscent of wild strawberry, red cherry and minerals, just delightful for cocktail sipping or a refreshing partner with light salads or seafood dishes — e.g. shrimp, scallops or trout. Tip: Serve Roses slightly chilled in small servings to ensure a cool serving temperature (50 degrees) — not ice cold, which kills the aromas.

Ravinia performer possesses sax appeal ■ by gregg shapiro

It’s been about 20 years since sax man Dave Koz has played Ravinia Festival. This time, on the Fourth of July, he’s bringing friends Mindy Abair, Gerald Albright and Richard Elliot along with him to Ravinia on his Summer Horns tour. The title of the tour comes from the 2013 Summer Horns (Concord) disc, credited to Dave Koz and Friends, on which the foursome plays a set of classic tunes, including “Hot Fun In the Summertime,” “Rise” and “Take Five,” all meant to let the sun shine in during the summer months — and all year round. Gregg Shapiro: Dave, how do summer horns differ from winter horns? Dave Koz: [Laughs] That’s a very good question. Still the same horns, definitely. I think it really is more about material. The Summer Horns project was always about celebrating these bands that I grew up with. It as an idea that had been popping around in my head for a long time to do a tribute album to bands such as Tower of Power and Earth, Wind & Fire and Blood, Sweat & Tears and Chicago and James Brown, Kool & The Gang. There were so many of them that had this horn section that was such a part of the DNA of the group. If I had to say that there was one sound that turned my musical key, it was that that made me want to be a saxophone player. GS: I’m so glad you mentioned Chicago and Earth Wind & Fire, because you cover Chicago’s “25 or 6 to 4” and Earth Wind & Fire’s “Reasons,” as well as their arrangement of the Beatles’ “Got To Get You Into My Life.” Where do those two bands fall on your list of influences? DK: They fall pretty much at 1a and 1b [laughs]. And both are related to Chicago. That’s the thing about that music and being about to come to a place such as Ravinia. I’ve wanted to come back for so many years. With this music and this show, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that we’re coming back. To reiterate where your first question was going, this music is such feel-good, nostalgic music. For people of a certain age, when you listen to these songs, it takes you back

to that time when it was a little bit more innocent. In that way these songs are like a soundtrack to our lives. It becomes like a summer experience. It’s lighter, it’s fun. That’s what these songs mean to me when I listen to them. Every single one, the whole intention is to make you feel great, to remind you of that time when perhaps things were a little simpler in life. GS: You mentioned feeling good and Summer Horns also includes a cover of James Brown’s “I Got You (I Feel Good).” Brown is the subject of this summer’s biopic Get On Up. If there was a Dave Koz biopic, who would you want to play you? DK: [Laughs] Can I pick John Stamos? GS: Of course. Good choice! DK: [Laughs] Well, he’s far better-looking than I am. In the movie Chef, the director Jon Favreau — let’s just say he’s not Brad Pitt. But the two leading ladies, one is his girlfriend and one is his ex-wife — one is Sofia Vergara and the other is Scarlett Johansson. It’s so funny because if you’re the director, why wouldn’t you cast these gorgeous women as your date, with the surety that if this was real life this would never happen. There’s never going to be a Dave Koz biopic, so why shouldn’t I choose John Stamos? GS: How did you go about selecting the friends you did to record and perform with you on the Summer Horns disc? DK: Intuitively, I felt like instead of having the typical horn section with trumpets and trombones and saxophones, to make it different from a sonic standpoint, to do it with all saxes would be a cool new sound. Sometimes I think you have to assume that you’re being guided to the right people. I really didn’t think about it. The first person I called was Mindy Abair. The second call was to Richard (Elliot) and then I called Gerald (Albright). Those are the first three people I called. I explained the project and before I could even finish explaining the concept, all three of them said, “I’m in.” Here are four artists who are solo artists, each with their own successful solo career. It’s a very different thing to say, “I’m in a band now. I’m a collaborator. I have to blend

Dave Koz

with these other saxophone players.” We just lucked out. We all agreed to do a CD and a tour before we ever made a note together. I remember that first day in the skin tightening studio, sidereduction by side, shoulder to shoulder, wrinkle praying that it’s going to work. After the sun damage reversal first take, we were all high-fiving because skin texture rejuvenation the sound was so “There it is! That’s our sound! It worked!” GS: You mentioned being in the studio; what is the chemistry with these friends like onstage? DK: It starts with a massive amount of mutual respect and appreciation for each other’s unique gifts. We all play the same

Time for a renovation? No, not the house.

instrument, but we approach it in such different ways, with our own styles and our own ability to communicate on that instrument. But when we’re playing together, we’re a unit. We’re supportive of each other. When it’s time for anybody to step out, then that’s the time for them to go for it. The best way I can describe is it’s like those track and field relay teams with the batons. We’re 100 percent behind each other, and we’re a team. When Gerald, for example, does the lead on “I Feel Good,” he’s got the baton and we’ve given it to him and he runs with. When it’s his time to pass the baton to the next person, there it is. ■

out & about

If you could change one decision you have made, what would it be?

Maeve Worrell and Deanna Monroe, Highland Park Maeve: Getting my permit earlier so I could have gotten my license on my birthday. Deanna: Getting in the middle of a disagreement between sisters — trying to be helpful as it backfired.

Ellie Goldman, Highland Park I never read enough of the classics.

Pernilla Peterson, Evanston No bad decisions. Every one — even those that didn’t seem the best — always got me to a better place.

Sarah Sinclair and Connor Sinclair, Lake Bluff Sarah: I’d go to college. Connor: I wish I wasn’t so quick to judge — I was the bully who became bullied.

Matt and Ellen Ozmun, Northbrook Ellen: There’s a lot of clothing I wouldn’t have purchased. Matt: Me too — many suits I wish I had never bought!

Amanda Hulseman, with Murphy and Finian –Lake Forest I’m grateful for my two kids and my husband. No regrets.

Alexander Salgado, Chipotle in Highland Park Would have accepted an offer to play professional soccer in Mexico — but I wanted to stay with my family in America.

Emily Ridder, Paige Zimmerman, Lizzy Kenter and Danielle Kurensky, all of Wilmette. Emily: To not be as sad to move because I like it better here. Paige: I wish I would have chosen a different book for summer reading! Lizzy: I’d do more extracurricular activities. Danielle: I wish I would have tried out for the school’s volleyball team.

30 | home & design

Architect’s own house is strikingly original — and comfortable ■ by jake jarvi Robert Rasmussen realized his dream early in life. He built his home in Lake Forest with his two hands. Framing, carpentry, millwork, and masonry —every aspect of his home bears his own imaginative fingerprint. He and his wife, June, first bought the property in the mid-1960s when the areas surrounding Old Elm Road were nothing but woods. Robert would work all day for Coder Taylor Associates in Kenilworth as a construction supervisor, arrive at his Lake Forest building site at 5 p.m., and work by himself until 11 every night. After three years, Robert and June were able to move in — but Robert didn’t stop there. He went on to build the furnishings inside their new home. The structure is captivating in every detail, from the long arcing hallway with the built-in storage to the circular rooms adorned with curving furniture. The house is strikingly original and comfortable at the same time. “I designed this house by following the philosophy of Lao-Tzu (an ancient Chinese philosopher). You start out with your design, and every part has to behave in accordance with the pattern of the whole,” he says. Robert first learned of the architectural implications of Lao-Tzu philosophy during his time as an apprentice with Frank Lloyd Wright in the late 1950s. The Wright fellowship gave him keen insight into designing environment reflexive living spaces and an intimate look at Wright’s professional methods. “He never demanded that you do anything. He set an example and you followed it. He worked long and hard. He didn’t say you had to. He’d always say, ‘Boys, the architecture’s here. It’s up to you to get it.’ The harder you worked, the more you got out of it. “Mr. Wright was a wonderful person,” Robert adds. “He treated me really well and so did Mrs. Wright. I think it’s a shame that no one has ever written a story on Mr. Wright’s wonderful sense of humor. They always make him so serious and arrogant. He wasn’t arrogant at all. He was just a down-to-earth guy.” Robert took the principles he learned from Wright and built his home so true to those ideals that it’s one of the stops on a tour of homes built by Wright. Every other year, he and June open their door to Wright enthusiasts and offer them cocktails and a buffet-style dinner. But as he continued to craft beautiful, one-of-a-kind designs for new homes, he found that people were moving away from building something unique. Instead, homeowners were asking him to design standard two-story houses and faux-French mini-mansions. The thought of designing those made his heart sink. Robert then made a career as an architectural and construction consultant for banks and lenders with his company R. R. Rasmussen and Associates. Despite the number of unrealized designs for beautiful homes he has in his studio, Robert has applied his philosophy on architecture to his way of life. “All the parts must behave in accordance with the pattern of the whole. If all the parts in your own life behave in that pattern, it’s a nice life. If your family and community behaved in that pattern of the concept of the whole, look how nice the world would be. “What really provides happiness to anybody? You can go out and buy yourself a new car, but that doesn’t really make you happy. Happiness comes from the fulfillment of duty. Fulfilling your duty takes wisdom, humanity, and courage. If you integrate that into the pattern of the whole, life gets pretty easy, and I think you could find pretty good happiness there.” ■

Reel good Winning goal replay never gets old for Connors’ household

New Trier High School’s Sarah Connors (No. 14), seen here going against Loyola Academy’s KK Phalen during the state playoffs, will be playing her college soccer at Trinity College in Connecticut. photography by joel lerner

■ by bill mclean

sports@northshoreweekend.com Bonnie Connors has seen footage of her daughter’s magnificent foot feat 50 times. At least. Some reruns never get old. Sarah Connors blasted a first-half, 42-yard goal in New Trier’s 1-0 defeat of St. Charles East in the Class 3A state soccer championship in Naperville on June 7. “I think it continues to excite my mom more than it does me,” says Sarah, a 2014 New Trier graduate and one of the Trevians’ many star defenders in a 31-1 season. “But, yes, I do replay the goal in my mind every day.” The memorable sequence began with a cross in the box, followed by a scramble. New Trier’s leading scorer, senior forward Maddie Mulford, controlled the ball and played it back to Connors. “As the ball came to me, I checked to see everybody moving up, which was the right thing for them to do,” the 5-foot-8 Connors recalls. Connors also noticed St. Charles East’s goalie cheat up a bit. The stars were aligned perfectly, as were the Fighting Saints’ defenders and keeper — from Connors’ perspective. NT’s co-captain, who entered the match having scored only one goal in ’14, took a mighty swing with her right leg. The ball soared. The opposing goalie looked up and suddenly resembled a center fielder experiencing an uh-oh moment as the

ball descended rapidly … and at a difficult angle. She made an attempt to swat Connors’ shot but whiffed, an out-of-position victim. Nobody else would score that day, and the 26th shutout of the season for New Trier helped the program net its fourth state title and first since ’06. “It’s been crazy and incredible all at the same time,” Connors says of her days since the title match at North Central College. “We’ve been celebrating a lot, having a lot of fun. “What an incredible journey our team had, beginning with all the hard work we put in during the offseason.” Connors’ pronounced work ethic and talent caught New Trier soccer coach Jim Burnside’s attention three years ago. On the last day of varsity tryouts, Connors, then a freshman, was summoned by Trevians assistant coach Molly Lombardi to enter New Trier’s campus building in Winnetka and walk down a couple of hallways. After making a right turn, Connors noticed Burnside, standing alone, at the end of a hallway. He extended his right hand to congratulate Connors for making the varsity. Connors then went into a classroom full of other first-time varsity soccer members. “All of us later met up with the returning varsity players in a gym, where they all welcomed us and cheered for us,” Connors recalls. “What I also remember about that season was [Burnside] telling me, ‘When you’re a senior, our team is going to be a very good one.’ ” Connors played outside back for most of her

prep career. Burnside shifted her to a midfield slot in the ’13 season when a starting midfielder suffered a season-ending knee injury. “Sarah always shot for perfection as a defender for us,” Burnside says. “She knew, as did all of our defenders, that one mistake on defense could cost us a game. Forwards enjoy the benefit of knowing they’ll probably get other chances to score after making a mistake. “The goal Sarah scored [in the state final] was quite a moment for her and our team. But it was her body of work on defense — her quiet, significant body of work all season long — that meant so much. Sarah took on great teams’ strikers and did such an excellent job against them all season. What she did against Barrington [a 1-0 NT victory in a supersectional on June 3] … her work throughout that entire game was special.” Connors, a Winnetka resident, often attended New Trier girls soccer matches as a grade-schooler, paying particularly close attention to former stars Crysti Howser and KayAnne Gummersall. She searched for their college profiles and tacked them to a bulletin board in her room. “I never met them,” Connors says. “But they inspired me each time I watched them play. Crysti was quoted [in her profile] as saying, ‘My greatest strength is how hard I work.’ That stuck with me.” Collective patience by New Trier’s defense lifted the Trevians in ’14. Connors and her back-line mates — classmate Alex Bukovac and rising seniors Jackie Welch and Caroline Smith — were virtually impenetrable in front of rising junior goalkeeper

Dani Kaufman (0.26 goals-against average). “You have to wait and pick the right moment to step in and attempt to take the ball away from a forward or a midfielder,” Connors says of a critical axiom for defenders. “Keeping your composure, staying locked in … we also did that, and we worked so well together on defense, communicated so well. “We were all about helping each other.” Burnside, meanwhile, was all about balance. The coach made sure his Trevians practiced hard — and laughed hard. “He has always emphasized having ‘serious fun’ during a season, ” Connors says. “Whenever we were working hard during a drill, he didn’t mind if somebody cracked a joke to lighten things up; he encouraged that. “Sometimes,” she adds, “he got out there, ran around and competed with us at practices. That was fun for him.” Earlier this month Connors and her club soccer squad headed east for a serious tournament. FC United Select’s 18U team — also featuring Bucknell-bound Mulford and Denison-bound midfielder Meg Wozniak (NTHS, ’14) — vied for a national berth at the US Youth Soccer Region II Championships in Dayton, Ohio, June 21-25. Connors will continue her soccer career at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. TC’s Bantams went a program-best 13-4-1 last fall, qualifying for the NCAA Division III playoffs for the first time and finishing with No. 23 national ranking. An alumna of the college is Bonnie Connors, aka the proudest soccer mom along the North Shore. ■

Block & roll

Duffy’s play in the middle spurred Scouts’ resurgence on the volleyball court ■ by bill mclean

sports@northshoreweekend.com Jack Duffy did not want to leave the volleyball court at a practice this past spring. Duffy was a Lake Forest High School senior middle blocker at the time. The 6-foot3, 185-pounder and some of his teammates had just lost an abbreviated set to other teammates. “The score was 10-5, maybe 10-4,” Scouts coach Colin Kiely recalls. “Jack wasn’t mad; he was annoyed that his side did not play as well as he thought it could. “He said, ‘We’re playing again.’ I looked at my assistant [Joe Busse]. We talked. Then I said to Jack, ‘OK, play again.’ ” Three years earlier, the same Jack Duffy showed up on a volleyball court at the school as a novice spiker. He and one of his good friends/soccer teammates, classmate Sam Danneker, chose to go out for volleyball rather than lacrosse as freshmen. “Sam did not want to play lacrosse,” Duffy says. “So I decided to go out for volleyball with him. It took a while before I felt comfortable as a volleyball player. Freshman year [on the B team], I didn’t even know how to hit.” Duffy made the Scouts’ JV squad the next spring and emerged as one of the varsity’s most consistent hitters as a junior. He took off as blocking force in 2014, pacing a vastly improved team in blocks (73) and soft blocks (63) — blocks that slow a hitter’s kill attempts. Duffy’s block total as a senior was only 19 fewer than the block total put up by the entire LFHS team in ’13. Danneker finished as the team’s No. 2 blocker in ’14. Duffy also stood out on offense, pounding 149 kills in 284 attempts (.525). His kill total ranked second among Scouts behind outside hitter Andrew Salzer (167), a rising senior. “I was really proud of the way our program reestablished a middle presence,” says Kiely, whose 22-14 regional finalist won

eight more matches than his ’13 edition did. “Jack and Sam formed a great combination when we ran our offense through our middles. Jack was overpowering, while Sam [83 kills] hit mostly around and through blocks.” In the summer before his senior year, Duffy informed his mother, Nancy, that he wanted to enhance his volleyball game — away from the court. Nancy encouraged her son to work with a personal trainer at Fitness Together in Lake Forest, where she worked out. Jack did box jumps and squat jumps and hardened his core three times a week at the club. “I’m glad I did all that, because if I hadn’t, our first week of volleyball conditioning would have destroyed me,” says Duffy, who joined setter and classmate Ryan Bradford as an all-North Suburban Conference pick. “It was real cool, looking back on my experiences in volleyball. To just jump into a sport I knew nothing about and end up enjoying it as much as I did … I learned about teamwork, leadership, when to be vocal — stuff like that.” He also learned the hard way what not to do during a match. Duffy was issued a yellow card twice this past spring for celebrating loudly while facing the net. Such an act is deemed unsportsmanlike, because it appears to be of a taunting nature. It’s also an act Duffy would never commit intentionally. “It was pretty funny both times, because Jack is the last guy you’d expect to get called for a yellow card,” Kiely says. “That first time, he had no idea he was doing it, probably got caught up in the moment. The second time, I think he just forgot he couldn’t do that. He’s a genuinely nice guy; everybody knows that. “I have never seen him get angry at anyone. Ever. That’s the way he is.” Duffy certainly knew his way around soccer pitches. A captain and all-NSC selection last fall for a 14-7-1 regional champion, the midfielder also earned Chicago Fire

Jack Duffy of the Scouts makes a play at the net during high school volleyball action this spring. He was an all-conference middle blocker.photography by george pfoertner

all-state/all-academic (second team) recognition and was named recipient of the Christopher Quon Unsung Hero Award. He started playing an acoustic guitar late last year, mostly before bedtime or during homework breaks. Duffy likes to play “Blackbird” by the Beatles and “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin. He jogs when he’s either bored or anxious, and he considers chess to be a fun challenge. “I’m not super good at chess,” says Duffy, who might sign up for intramural volleyball while majoring in math or accounting at Indiana University. But his mom is super good at photography. Nancy was the team photographer for the

volleyball team and produced photo albums for many of the Scouts after the ’14 season. In one of her action images, her airborne son appears to be gripping a volleyball during a kill in a match. “My mom got in the perfect position for that shot,” Duffy says. It was a fitting shot, because it truly captured what Duffy had set out to accomplish in his final prep volleyball season. “I tried not to get down on myself,” he says. “I did not want to hit a ball right into CoolSculpting is the non-surgical body contouring treatmen the net and then shut down. Near the cash register in Winnetka’s Café Buongiorno, there’s a white bucket catching drips of water from a leaking ceiling. “Looks like you have a little problem here,” says Jean Wright to the restaurant’s owners. After owning and operating an eponymous real estate business from Winnetka for 32 years, Wright can’t help herself but call out an issue when she sees one. “It’s going to be fine,” replies the café’s owner. “But we wonder how you do it, Jean. You’re always the first car at your office and the last one to leave.” She looks at me with a knowing grin, as if to communicate our interview was complete. “When I say that the Jean Wright Real Estate team works 24-7, I mean it,” says Wright over a short stack of blueberry pancakes, a small glass of orange juice, and a cup of decaffeinated coffee. “I sleep with my phone on my nightstand and if I hear it beep, I check to see if someone is looking for information on a listing. If I don’t get back to them right away, an agent in another office just might.

more of an investor.” But at that time unless she went to work for a brokerage firm, she couldn’t get her real estate license. Wright was soon hired by a small local firm. But four years later, she went out on her own and hung the Jean Wright Real Estate shingle. “I remember when I first opened my office I was having lunch here in town, and I overheard agents from

“It’s important to get people what they need when they need it — even if it’s in the middle of the night.” | Jean Wright “It’s important to get people what they need when they need it — even if it’s in the middle of the night.” This formidable work ethic has been at the cornerstone of Wright’s business ventures since she came to Winnetka 54 years ago as the owner of a Chicagobased secretarial school. “We moved here to raise our family,” says Wright of she and her husband and son Theron, who bought a house on an acre of land near the lake, a home she has lived in ever since. “It was no different than why people move from the city today.” When Wright’s husband died when her son was nine years old, she sold her school in the city and decided to take real estate classes. “I had no intention of becoming an agent,” she remembers. “I thought I would be

another firm saying that they didn’t think I would last six months,” Wright recalls with a wry smile, counting on her fingers the five different companies that had purchased that office over the years. “But here I am.” Wright is an anomaly in an industry famous for company acquisitions and takeovers. Yet she has remained true to her business model as a boutique office with never more than 15 brokers at a time — the perfect size, Wright says. “All of the big real estate groups have wanted to buy us — every one of them,” she says. “I have a pat little answer for them when they call. It’s ‘thank you very much, but the answer is no.’ “We like what we’re doing and we’re doing it well. Why should we sell? We’re comfortable where we are.” Wright’s enduring presence in the real estate industry is in large part due to the personal attention her clients receive. “When people work with us, they get to know us very well. There’s no such thing as what I call ‘generic service.’ Clients know who is making their appointments and who is coming and going in their homes.” And each property is advertised and promoted until it is sold. In spite of how long she’s been in the business, Wright still gets a thrill from coming into her office located on Chestnut Street in a building she’s owned almost since the beginning. With her iPhone never far from reach, Wright enjoys that no two days are ever the same. “Before I go to bed at night, I look at my calendar to see what’s in store for the next day,” she says. “Like today, I knew I was having breakfast with you. But I didn’t know until just a little while ago that I’d be showing a home in the western suburbs. You have to be flexible to make it in this business.” Though her days are full, Wright still makes time for Chamber of Commerce commitments, homemade dinners, and workouts at the gym. The night before our breakfast, she spent nearly two hours at Lifetime Fitness. “I like to stay in shape, but I also like to have a bowl of ice cream every day at 4 o’clock,” she says. “It would kill my son who doesn’t eat sugar or carbs to know that I always keep a gallon of Homer’s coffee ice cream in the office refrigerator for my afternoon snack.” [An ice cream tip from Wright: Sprinkle a tablespoon of instant coffee on top of the coffee ice cream for an extra treat.] W h e n asked if she ever thinks about scaling back her workload, Wright waves off such notions. “I really love what I do. When I do something, I do it 100 percent. I’m all in. I’m not going anywhere.” ■
